President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation establishing the first Women’s History Month celebrated by the United States Government on March 4th, 1988. In his proclamation, President Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States.
We decided to celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make Plantation such a great place to live and raise a family.
The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome.
It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. Today the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel is serving her fourth term. The CEOs of companies like General Motors and Fidelity Investments are women, as are Vice President Harris and Speaker of the House Pelosi. Those leaders would certainly not be where they are today without the accomplishments of countless women before them. It reminds us of Issac Newton’s famous quote, “I have seen further by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
As we reflect during this year’s Women’s History Month, we can’t help but wonder on whose shoulders our daughters and granddaughters will be standing.
