THE ZEN HOME PROJECT
By Leslie Courtney
Now that it’s Summer, when the AC is cranked up and your home is a refuge from the heat, here are some simple tips to create a home that feels more like a sacred space. We’re talking clutter free and breathable.

Mindful Minimalism: Opt for a clutter-free environment and organize your space. Savor Simplicity. Give yourself permission to let go of what no longer serves you. In Marie Kondo's book “Spark Joy,” she states, “The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one's hand and ask: ‘Does this spark joy?’”
Create a Zen Corner. Designate a specific area for retreat. It’s not about square footage, it can be a small space. Think cushions and a small table that can serve as an altar. This can be your meditation space. Websites such as samadhicushions.com and gaim.com are great resources.
Nature: Introduce natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo in your furniture and flooring, Place potted plants or fresh flowers around. (Personally, I’m an orchid girl).
Lightweight Fabrics: Swap out heavy curtains or drapes and consider light-filtering blinds to soften the incoming light and create an ethereal ambiance.
Add Water Elements: Consider placing a small tabletop fountain or a bowl of water with floating candles or flower petals. Water is a fundamental of Feng Shui to attract wealth and abundance. Aromatherapy: Diffuse essential oils with scents like lavender, and citrus or peppermint. Discover your favorites at Whole Foods. I love Palo Santo’s aroma when I set an intention.
Music: Turn on sounds of ocean waves, music that soothes. Bija Mantras are so lovely. Just tell Alexa… she’ll handle it.
Treasures: Think photographs, inspirational items and crystals to elevate your space. Rose and clear quartz are great. Selenite, black tourmaline and amethyst have great properties as well. Coffee table books: Companions for the mind to help you get started on a mindful practice: “Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation” by Sharon Salzberg and "The Miracle of Mindfulness" by Thich Nhat Hanh.
