A MESSAGE TO OUR FELLOW COMMUNITY BUILDERS

WORKING TOWARDS A BRIGHTER FUTURE…

2

RECOGNISING THE UNSUNG HEROES OF AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITIES

On behalf of the Commonwealth Bank and Our Community, we are delighted to once again bring you our annual Not-for-Profit Finance Week. It is through events such as these that we are able to support the building of financial literacy and governance skills across the not-for-profit sector. With the ongoing delivery of new tools and resources, we will better assist not-for-profits and community groups, as each continues to provide their much needed support and services to local communities and those in need. This year’s Not-for-Profit Finance Week brings together an exciting line-up of some of our leading experts who will share their knowledge and wisdom in key areas of governance, fundraising, innovation, cybersecurity and how to decipher financial statements. These free webinars and presentations are designed for new and existing board members, treasurers and those working within the sector and are designed to have you come away with practical tools and insights you can implement straight away. A highlight of Not-for-Profit Finance Week is, of course, the announcement of the winners and nominated treasurers in the Commonwealth Bank Not-for-Profit Treasurers’ Awards. Now in their third year, the Awards continue to enjoy the endorsement of all state and territory government treasurers – highlighting the importance of good financial practice within the sector. The Awards provide an opportunity for us all to recognise and thank community and not-for-profit treasurers – the often unsung heroes of the sector. It remains an incredibly uplifting experience to read about treasurers who have been nominated by their colleagues, or by their community, and the high esteem in which these individuals are held.

The role of a treasurer is no easy task and the very future of not-for-profit organisations depends on their ability to deliver good governance processes and strong financial management. However, beyond providing an ability to say thanks, the Awards are also an important vehicle to share ideas, knowledge and capabilities across the sector. This willingness to share information to assist other not-for-profits and community groups is a unique and inspiring trait that underpins the very essence of what the sector stands for – the ability to support and helps others. We extend our congratulations to all the Treasurers who were nominated in the 2017 Awards, and thank all those Treasurers who so generously shared their wisdom this year. Finally, a thank you to everyone who works in the not-for-profit sector. Your efforts, your passion and your hard work continue to strengthen the very fabric of our nation – building a fairer, equitable and more inclusive Australia for all.

Julienne Price Head of Not-for-Profit Sector Banking, Commonwealth Bank

Denis Moriarty Group Managing Director Our Community

ABOUT THE AWARDS

ABOUT THE 2017 TREASURERS’ AWARDS… The response to the 2017 Commonwealth Bank Not-for-Profit Treasurers’ Awards was fantastic. We received over 1,300 submissions, accompanied by inspiring and glowing endorsements of our community treasurers.

8

RECOGNISING THE UNSUNG HEROES OF AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITIES

Not-for-profit organisations are the fabric which holds our nation together. We all, in turn rely heavily on our community treasurers who work tirelessly to ensure that our not-for-profit sector remains well placed to provide assistance to the most vulnerable members of our society. The Commonwealth Bank Not-for Profit Treasurers’ Awards consist of two categories – providing an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of treasurers across the nation, as well as being a vehicle for community treasurers to share their knowledge and ideas.

CATEGORY A:

CATEGORY B:

People from across the community, as well those involved with not-for-profit groups, were invited to let their treasurer know how much they are valued by nominating them to receive an official 2017 Commonwealth Bank Not-for-Profit Treasurers’ Awards Certificate of Appreciation.

Treasurers were invited to spread their knowledge by creating and sharing one of the following resources: • A financial template • An outline and summary of a financial webinar • A financial policy The best entry from each of the three categories were chosen to win a $5,000 donation for their not-forprofit group.

OUR WINNERS

CELEBRATING OUR 2017 AWARD WINNERS We would like to congratulate our three 2017 winners, who have made a significant contribution to their not-for-profit organisation and to their wider communities.

BRUCE CLARKE Treasurer Melbourne Mustangs Ice Hockey Club, Victoria

The Melbourne Mustangs compete in the Australian Ice Hockey League. Although the team competes at a national league level, all positions at the Club are unpaid and the players are amateurs. Bruce commenced as Honorary Treasurer of the Mustangs at the start of 2017. He found the role advertised on a volunteers portal and saw it as an excellent way to put something back to the local community and help young people achieve their sporting dreams. Bruce has been able to apply many of the skills from his full-time role as CFO of the Moonee Valley Racing Club to benefit his role as Treasurer of the Mustangs. He views his role as more than just a typical treasurer. As well as performing all of the usual reporting duties, he has prepared and implemented a range of technology strategies to ensure continued financial strength, checks and balances.

“I am thrilled to win this Award on behalf of the Melbourne Mustangs. The prizemoney will be wellused in helping our amateur team compete in the national competition.

RECOGNISING THE UNSUNG HEROES OF AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITIES

SINEAD GLENNON

KAVEEN BACHOO

Treasurer Genetic and Rare Disease Network, Western Australia

Treasurer Hepatitis Queensland, Queensland

The Genetic and Rare Disease Network works to connect, inform, support and empower families affected by genetic and rare diseases. Before arriving in Australia, Sinead was involved in various charity initiatives, including participating on her previous employer’s Corporate Responsibility Committee. On this committee, she found that the most successful projects were the ones where staff could donate their time instead of money. The idea of skills-based volunteering with a worthwhile charity appealed to Sinead so she applied for a role with the Genetic and Rare Disease Network through Our Community’s Board Matching service. This is her first time undertaking the role of Treasurer for a not-for-profit group and she is really enjoying the responsibility and workload. She has found that her accounting background and expertise is extremely beneficial to performing the role and informed her thinking about the difficulty faced by treasurers who are performing the role without any accounting knowledge or expertise. For this reason, she has designed various tools for not-for-profit treasurers that help them better achieve financial sustainability and safe practices.

“I am thrilled to be a recipient of this Award. I am excited that my submission has been so well received and I hope it continues to be of use to other treasurers, especially those who find the financial analysis aspect of their role to be daunting.”

Kaveen is the treasurer of Hepatitis Queensland, the peak body and central voice for liver health in the Sunshine State. Hepatitis Queensland is a not-for-profit, community organisation dedicated to improving health and social outcomes for Queenslanders affected by, or at risk of viral hepatitis and liver disease. So many important groups and individuals make up the Hepatitis Queensland family. At the heart, is the voluntary Board, whose support, dedication and passion for the cause inspire Kaveen in his role as Treasurer. As Treasurer and Head of the Finance & Audit Committee, Kaveen employs his practical experience from various roles with BHP Billiton, Xstrata and now Glencore to passionately drive the financial strategy of Hepatitis Queensland with a particular focus on prudent management of accounts, cost control and sophisticated reporting to support Hepatitis Queensland’s core activities. Kaveen looks forward to continuing to give back to his community and considers it an honour, a privilege and a joy to be involved with Hepatitis Queensland at every level: Treasurer, volunteer and supporter.

“I feel very privileged to be receiving this award – thank you. It is a gratifying experience to use my knowledge and passion about finance and steer Hepatitis Queensland (HQ) in its journey of financial sustainability.” 11

A MESSAGE TO OUR FELLOW COMMUNITY BUILDERS

ABOUT: NOT-FOR-PROFIT SECTOR BANKING Communities are at the core of CommBank’s vision to excel at securing and enhancing the financial wellbeing of people, businesses and communities. For more than 100 years, we’ve been supporting Australian communities including the not-forprofit organisations that help to sustain and strengthen them. In your world it’s the people that make the difference, and that’s true in our world as well. Our goal is to help drive efficiencies that will deliver maximum benefit to your cause.

A partnership with a difference We’re focused on continuing to redefine the modern banking relationship with our not-for-profit clients, providing each with the ability to access and leverage resources that would often be beyond their financial reach. These resources include: • The latest technology and products to help reduce

administration, get funds into your organisation faster and stay in real-time control of funds.

36

• Dedicated Innovation Labs, innovation teams and

not-for-profit innovation specialists to support your organisation deliver both new and existing services. • Think tanks and masterclasses featuring the latest

in design thinking methodologies. • A range of training programs and expert consulting

teams including cybersecurity and data analytics.

Specialist Bankers CommBank’s national team of not-for-profit sector bankers have been specifically accredited in notfor-profit banking. Our specialist team are the only bankers in Australia who have taken their knowledge of the not-for-profit sector to the next level, studying for the Institute of Community Directors Australia’s Diploma of Business (Governance). Together these programs continue to deepen the specialised knowledge and expertise of the team, enabling us to work in close partnership with community organisations

Find out more If you’re interested in taking your organisation or community group beyond the traditional banking relationship, contact Julienne Price, Head of Not-forProfit Sector banking at julienne.price@cba.com.au
