The World of Cross Stitching - issue 347

This month, we once again say a very warm welcome to Elmer the elephant (p10). With his rainbow patchwork appearance, Elmer acts as a reminder for us all to celebrate our uniqueness, and that goes for our stitching, too! Be proud of every single stitch you place, and don’t worry about it looking exactly like the photo in the magazine or like a friend’s – it’s uniquely yours!

As always, we’re hoping for sunshine but even on rainy days, we have plenty of projects to brighten your day, such as this stunning castle scene (p20). How did you start cross stitching?

I remember first seeing cross stitch when a medical secretary I met through work was selling cross stitch cards. There was a cute ballerina that I bought for a friend’s birthday. I was fascinated by how she made it and she told me all about it. Not long after, I bought my first kit, which was a motorcycle card for my husband’s birthday.

Fave WOXS design?

I love the Furry Tales series – they’re all so cute! That’s why I can’t wait to sew the exclusive gift of Lizzie stitching a heart in this issue. I just love how she also has a sewing hoop! She’ll look so nice framed and displayed in my craft room. Which three words describe you best? Persistent, patient, and creative.

Who do you like to stitch for? I always stitch for friends and family. I enjoy making things and I think the more personal the better as it shows all the love and care I put into it. Who are your stitching buddies?

When I was a cross stitch-obsessed teenager, even my sport-mad younger brother joined in. Jack’s project was a design he customised – it was Rob Andrew taking a conversion kick for England during the Six Nations! Nowadays, he paints models, but we still get together and craft occasionally as well as helping each other with DIY projects. WOXS design you love?

I loved the ‘Eagle Canvas’ design from issue 345 (May 2024). I’ve seen many eagles in Suffolk during springtime, so stitching this would be a wonderful way to remember the special moments my brother and I had when we saw them out in the wild.

I have loved seeing designs from Emma Louise Art Stitch as she depicts Cornwall so beautifully, particularly in her latest design which was the Winter ‘Beach Scene’ in issue 341 (January 2024).

It’ll have to be stitching by the sea on a beautiful, warm day under a large umbrella in Cornwall! It’s my favourite holiday destination.

Who’s your favourite cross stitch designer and why?

I adore Durene Jones because her designs are simply stunning, fairly priced and easily accessible.

What has been your worst stitching disaster?

Not realising early on that there are different dye lots and to achieve a fluid look, you should buy the right number of skeins from the same batch. Be on the panel!

add the 3D thread effect

1 Following the pink line on the chart, work the backstitch coming from the side of the hoop, then take it through the eye of the stitched needle. Trail the length down creating a small loop, using our photo as a guide.

2 Take your needle down through your chosen end point for the thread. Avoid pulling too tightly to keep your looped shape sitting on top of the fabric.

3 Bring your needle up near to the centre of your loop, then back down again very slightly to the right of your original hole, catching the loop inbetween. This creates a tiny anchoring stitch to keep the loop in place.

4 Add more anchoring stitches if needed, but don’t go overboard – you want your thread to stand off the fabric slightly for the 3D effect. To finish, secure the end of your thread on the reverse.

You can either choose to stitch the pink ‘thread’ lines as normal following the chart, or try adding the fun dangling thread effectbelowexplained

FINDING

TIME TO CRAFT

Currently, I’m a manager in a consulting team at Deloitte and cross stitching is something I do in my free time as a hobby. I usually combine my stitching with an audiobook when it comes to ‘me-time’ as being in full-time employment is very busy, so I squeeze in whatever time I have left in the day to work on my projects. That inevitably means they take longer to complete, around about six months, but I don’t mind as I love working on big projects due to my ambitious nature and only make small ones if I need a last-minute present for a loved one. What inspires me to cross stitch is the gratification I receive when I make something out of nothing, seeing the colours all on the fabric to make a pixelated portrait in the end. I want to thank The World of Cross Stitching for all of the wonderful designs and inspiration you provide – finding the magazine in my letterbox is always one of the happiest days of the month for me.

For a friend whose parents acquired a corgi not long ago, I decided to make a bookmark, which I found in the ‘Dogs’ Design Library in issue 330 (March 2023). I’ve loved cross stitching and petit point ever since I was a child. My preferences are what I like to call ‘practical things’, such as bookmarks, cards, tablecloths, bed sheets, napkins and so forth. I only give completed works as a present to those who I know would appreciate my gifts, and my friend really loved the bookmark as it was a surprise for her.

FURRY TALES MASTERPIECE

Here’s a photo of a baby blanket where I chose 28 of the Furry Tales designs from my collection of WOXS magazines – I had more than 70 designs to choose from! The blanket took longer than I expected as I used 18-count evenweave, which I found quite challenging. Since I’m now in my late 70s, I try to use up my fabrics and kits before buying more. I really enjoy getting ideas of what designs to use from your magazine every month.

IN BUDDING MATRIMONY

Having worked on the ‘Love Blossoms’ kit from Bothy Threads*, I decided to tweak the free kit from issue 333 (June 2023) slightly so that it would pair nicely as a gift to my daughter and her fiancé. They both have children from previous marriages, which is why I added their names to the design so that all of their names could fit together nicely.

stitch with blended threads How to...

To stitch with blended threads, begin by checking the key to see how many strands of each colour you’ll need for the blended stitches – this is usually one of each colour, but not always. All you need to do is thread your needle with the specified quantities of the different coloured strands, then stitch as normal. You’ll see that the blended stitch has its own symbol on the chart, which is different to the symbols for the non-blended colours.

A ‘bead nabber’ may help you to easily pick up the beads for when you need to thread them

This design is going to be stitched for myself because I absolutely adore fantasy-themed cross stitch. Personally, I wouldn’t finish it in the hoop and instead I’d get it professionally framed in a regal toned wood so it’ll look splendid in my stitching room.

How to...

choose a frame for display

Think carefully about the frame you choose for your finished stitching in order to set off your work perfectly. The frame should enhance the stitching without overpowering it, so a good tip is to choose a colour that appears somewhere in the design, but not one of the main shades. The location where the picture will be displayed in your home should also influence your decision – will it suit the wallpaper or paint colour that it will be displayed against? For this design, we’ve chosen a metallic grey frame, which picks up on the silhouette form, and provides a modern finish that complements the style of the design. We also added a bold purple mount between the stitching and the frame, which creates an eyecatching, coordinated look. The mount also gives the design some room to breathe and sets it off beautifully.

Bead-iful designs

Q Do you have any tips when it comes to attaching beads? Mine always look like they’re either sticking out too much or falling off. I also never know what colour thread to use when attaching it. Should the thread match the bead colour, stitches or the fabric? Harry Dodd, via email

A Fiona: We always suggest using a whole cross stitch when attaching beads. First, thread your beading needle with two strands in a shade to match the bead colour as closely as possible (we’ve shown it in contrasting thread here so you

can see how it’s done). Or try using invisible thread for a totally seamless finish – just be aware it can be quite springy and tricky to get to grips with. Bring your needle up at one of the bottom corners of the stitch behind the bead symbol on the pattern, and thread your bead onto it. Then, take the needle down in the opposite top corner. This attaches your bead with the bottom arm of a cross stitch (1). Next, add the top arm in the opposite corners, ensuring one strand of thread falls on either side of the bead to help hold it upright (2). Secure each bead as you go for the best finish.

How to fray the edges

Q How do I fray the stitching around a design for when I’m sticking it onto a card? I’m scared to try it. Holly Turner, via Instagram

A Hannah: Trim your aida to at least two blocks away from the design. Then, use a pin or the tip of a needle to gently tease away the individual strands of the weave from the outermost block all the way around. To create a bigger fray, trim it with a wider border and fray multiple blocks. Use tweezers if you’re struggling to get hold of the strands.

The lavender designs in issue 333 (June 2023) are lovely but where can I get the aperture cards from? When I go to order them online, they seem to give the card dimensions and not the size of the aperture. I’ve stitched one design and would love to do more but not if I can’t get the oval aperture cards.

I have a number of skeins of DMC threads that do not appear on any checklist. They are 3880 to 3895. Can you tell me if these are colours that have been discontinued, or did the numbers change?

Hannah: This thread range has unfortunately been discontinued by DMC. They were actually only ever available in North America as a special packaged set, rather than individual skeins. You could still use them up by switching the listed shades in projects or your own designs.

Guide to stitching your Stitch-A-Long (SAL)

• To start stitching your SAL, make the top left stitch on the chart of part one, 10cm (4in) in from the top and left side of the fabric (instead of from the centre of your fabric, as you usually would).

• The shopping list has the size of fabric you’ll need if you’re stitching the stitch-themed SAL in full.

• The key lists the thread colours and skeins you’ll need to stitch the whole SAL. It also lists the final design area for all 12 parts.

• To join up the parts of your Stitch-A-Long, ignore the one-square border around the chart, and don’t leave a gap when joining the next part to the one you stitched previously (except for parts 7 and 10 where you should leave a one-square border between the part and the neighbouring parts).

• Refer to the photo of the completed design and to the plan on the opposite page when stitching your SAL.

to...

make your scissor case

1 Affix iron-on interfacing to the reverse side of your stitching, then trim the fabric with a 1cm (½in) seam allowance from the backstitch border. Cut a piece of cotton fabric to the same size for your case lining.

2 With right sides facing, machine- or hand-stitch the top and left-hand edges of the stitching and lining fabric together. Stitch closely to the outside edge of the backstitch border line, without sewing over it. Trim off all four corners from the seam to avoid bulk.

3 Turn the fabrics through, fold back and press the seam allowance along the backstitch

border on the other two open edges, in towards the reverse side of your stitching. Repeat this step with a same size fold for the lining fabric. Trim off the lining fabric that will be at the tip of your case.

4 Slipstitch the lining fabric and stitched piece together along the edges of the fabric folds, being careful to avoid stitching over the backstitch border – you’ll need this line of stitches intact for the next step.

5 Give the scissor case its shape by folding the two open edges together, then whipstitch between the backstitch borders on each side using two strands of grass green thread.

How to...

make your scissor fob

1 Trim both front and back stitched pieces of your fob with a 1cm (½in) seam allowance of fabric from the backstitch border. Cut off the tip of each corner – this will help the pieces fit together better.

2 Fold back and press the seam allowance of each design along the backstitch border, in towards the reverse side of your stitching. This will make the next steps much easier.

3 Use a pin to mark the middle of one edge of the top design. Thread your needle with two strands of grass green thread. Join the middle of the top piece with the corner of the bottom piece

and whipstitch them together, passing your needle through the backstitches of both top and bottom parts. Make sure not to skip stitches and avoid catching the fabric with the needle.

4 Stop stitching when you have one side left open. Fill the scissor fob with toy stuffing, ensuring you push it into the corners with the blunt end of a pencil to make the fob plump and even all over.

5 Whipstitch the final side, catching the edges of a loop of ribbon in the seam and adding more stuffing as you go to fill. Secure your thread to finish when the gap is closed.

We catch up with Furry Tales designer Lucie Heaton as she celebrates over 30 wonderful years as a cross stitch designer

Hi Lucie! How did you start designing your own cross stitch patterns?

I began designing in 1993, so this year I’m celebrating 31 years in the stitchy business! I got into it by responding to a callout for designers in a magazine. With my training in art and needlecraft, I took the plunge and taught myself how to create charts as I went along. In the early years, I fitted projects here and there while my two boys were toddlers – they’re now adults and I have three young grandchildren, so cross stitch designing has really grown up with me and my family. How would you describe your design style?

I’ve worked in so many different areas over the years, from projects for crafting weekends, magazines and books to manufacturing kits. They all have different requirements, but I do love to work on anything that has detail as well as a cute factor. Speaking of cute, I must mention my Furry Tales mice! Over the last 21 years I’ve developed a large collection of 150 designs. They feature a lovable character for just about every occasion and are still going strong with regular suggestions from Furry Tales fans. What’s the secret to your success?

I think it’s down to putting a lot of thought and concentration into the whole process of creating a design. What do you hope people get from stitching a Lucie Heaton chart?

I always hope that people will get pleasure and relaxation from stitching my designs, that’s the ultimate goal. I try to consider the actual stitching

process to make my patterns more enjoyable and accessible, so I try to avoid too many fractional stitches and the dreaded French knot!

Why is having a creative outlet essential for you?

Creativity is so important for wellbeing, especially during the stressful times of the past few years. It’s proven to calm the mind, relieve stress and boost happiness. Can you pick a favourite chart? It most certainly has to be my ‘Winter Robins’ as I adore birds, especially robins as they’re so full of character. I’ve had such lovely responses over the years to these two little sweet birds perched on a tree in a wintry scene. While it’s one of my earlier pieces, it continues to be ever popular. What advice would you give to a new designer?

Start small and use the time to build up your skills. This is also an

opportunity to try and be as original as possible and create designs that you would enjoy stitching yourself. What feedback do you get from your customers?

I’m so touched by all the lovely feedback I receive, particularly about the personalised ballerina and dinosaur charts that I create via my Etsy shop. I know that they have been stitched as gifts for many children by proud grannies, aunties, uncles, mums, dads and anyone else who wants to create a really special family heirloom to cherish forever.

do lazy daisy stitch

1 Start by securing the thread at the back of your work. Now, bring your needle up at the centre of your lazy daisy stitch, as indicated by the star shape of lines on the chart. Take the needle back down through the fabric next to where it came up, but not the exact same hole. Make sure not to pull the thread all the way through to the back, so that you create a loop on the front of your fabric. This will be the first petal.

2 Bring your needle back up at the tip of one of the line spokes – this is where the tip of the petal will be. Take your needle back down over the thread loop as a tiny anchoring stitch.

3 Then repeat steps 1 and 2 for each petal, bringing your needle up at the centre each time, for a flower made up of lazy daisy stitches. The flowers in this design are each made up of 5-6 petals each, so be sure to refer to the chart carefully for the positioning of each one.

Nature during the summer months is abundant with a fab kaleidoscope of colours – a joy to see on those long walks out in the sunshine, witnessing picturesque places painted with vibrant blooms. Amanda’s next instalment in this seasonal wreath series captures all those beautiful sights into a gorgeous, cyclical flower arrangement filled with delicate roses, bright lilies and pastelhued carnations.

We chose to stitch this design on 28-count cashel linen in a stone colour for a rustic, countryside feel. Though linen is trickier to stitch with due to the irregular weave, this is a lovely project to practise with and will look wonderful when finished.

NEEDLES

Clear symbols, colours & all the info you need!

CHARTS Madeupofcolouredsquares containingsymbolsthatrepresentsquares tobestitchedonthefabric.Atinysymbol denotesafractionalstitchinthecorner ofthesquareinwhichit’stobeworked. Thecentresofourchartsaremarked witharrowsontheedgeofeachside. Tofindthecorrespondingcentreofyour fabric,folditinhalfhorizontallyandthen vertically–thepointwherethecreases crossmarksthecentre.Startstitchinghere toensurethedesignispositionedinthe middleofthefabric.

Thread brands

Different manufacturer thread shades are listed in separate columns. For best results, stick to one manufacturer for the whole of a design. The first column is the brand we used to stitch the design.

Backstitch & French knot shades

The shades used for these are listed under the cross stitch symbols. The number of strands needed for these can vary, so make sure you check the key so you know how many strands to use.

Stitch count & design area

This indicates the finished size of your design – in stitches and on the particular fabric we’ve used. HPI stands for holes per inch.

How to stitch

Cross stitch

Each coloured square on the chart represents a whole cross stitch. Bring the needle up at the bottom left corner of a square and down at the top right corner. Then, bring the needle up at the bottom right corner and down at the top left to complete a stitch (starting corner positions can be reversed if preferred).

Backstitch

Backstitch is shown by a coloured line and is added to stitching to create detail. Work the backstitch over individual blocks on aida, or pairs of threads on evenweave. Bring the needle up through the fabric at 1 and take it down at 2, up at 3 and so on (see above), so that you are always working back on yourself.

Half cross stitch

Half cross stitch is identified with a different symbol on the chart and key to the cross stitches, and consists of one arm of the stitch only. Work each half cross stitch in the same direction as you would the top arm of your full cross stitches for a neat and consistent look to your project.

French knots

French knots appear as large dots on the chart. Bring the needle up through the fabric, then holding the thread with one hand, wind it around the needle two or three times. Holding the thread taut, take the needle down part of an aida block (or one thread on evenweave) away. Pull through until a neat knot is formed.

Tackle the basic stitches in our charts…

Fractional stitches

To make a quarter stitch, bring the needle up at the corner of a square and take it down through the centre, halfway across the diagonal, splitting the aida block (above left) or through the central hole if using evenweave. To turn this into a three-quarter stitch (above right, shown in pink thread), make a half cross stitch across the

Beads

Beads appear as a circle with a dot on the chart. To attach seed beads, use a whole cross stitch with two thread strands to help keep the beads upright – attach the bead with the bottom arm of a cross stitch and then add the top arm of the stitch, making sure that one strand of thread falls neatly on either side of the bead.

diagonal of the square. To make two fractional stitches in the same square, you’ll need to decide which is a quarter stitch (shown above, in blue) and which is a three-quarter stitch. Usually, the three-quarter stitch (shown above, in pink) is made in the foreground colour of the design –look at the composition of the design carefully to decide which is which.

Starting your thread

The loop method is the neatest way to start but can only be done with an even number of strands. Cut a 40cm (16in) thread length, pull out one strand and fold it in half. Thread the needle with both ends, forming a loop at the end. Bring the needle up through the fabric and back down through the loop, then pull to secure.

HOWTOALTERTHREADSHADESINADESIGN

Swap colours to suit your preferences for skin tones, stashbusting & more...

Thread colours are arranged in shade ‘families’ – these are groups of colours that create a gradient of shading. It helps to look at a shade card for the full palette when making colour comparisons (available from DMC and Anchor) as these are arranged within the shade families already. You can swap threads like-

for-like to equivalent shades of another family, ie. light, medium and dark. You may want to change the hue of an entire pattern, or use up threads already in your stash to save money. You can also alter skin tones to create different ethnicities. We’ve included some examples of skin shade families below,

but feel free to experiment with your own. You’ll need to select alternatives for mid-tones, highlights and shadows, depending on how many shades are included in a design. For example, if only one shade is used select the mid-tone, then add highlight and shadow tones either side of this as required.

Finishing your thread

Once you’ve finished stitching, finish off your threads to keep them secure by running the needle through the back of several stitches that you’ve already completed. Snip off the ends neatly with a sharp pair of embroidery scissors, as close to your fabric as possible.
