I’d like to thank everyone in the community who supported us for our inaugural issue. We’re certainly well on our way to providing the whole of Narangba with a great community-orientated magazine. HOME & GARDEN WITH OXMAR PROPERTIES

May is all about Mother’s Day so for this edition, we caught up with Trudi Lucas, the blushing bride who featured on the cover of our May 2014 pilot edition (see www.ournarangba.com.au for previous issues) to talk about the birth of her new baby boy Elijah, and her ultimate Mother’s Day present. We also catch up with local athlete Tamara Hotten, who recently nabbed herself a bronze medal at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships; discuss why Rockin’ 4 the Homeless 2.0 is set to be the best local concert in town, and track the evolution of one very special flower shop within our community.

Narangba Wedding Belle Welcomes Third Child by Katy More, MBCC Inc Member

Some may know Trudi Lucas as their neighbour, school mum or perhaps as the wedding belle on the front cover of our May 2014 Pilot Magazine. Either way she is a regular face around Narangba. One year on, we took some time to catch up with her about motherhood, her new baby boy Elijah, and the increasing popularity of birth photography. A year on from her Narangba wedding, Trudi is now the proud mum of Elijah Scott Lucas, featured on our cover at only three weeks old. As we sat down and talked about all things ‘mum’, Trudi displayed her natural instinct for motherhood and appeared well recovered, having recently returned home from hospital. Originally from New Zealand, Trudi has lived in Narangba for three years now and whilst she has been back a couple of times over the last year, family in New Zealand are yet to see the little man in person. With Nana and Granddad living nearby, the Lucas family have no intentions of taking Baby Elijah jet-setting to see his extended family just yet. Elijah’s older siblings, Josh (15 years) and Madi (8 years), have adjusted well into the routine of having

Musos Unite Against Homelessness by Jackie Smith, MBCC Inc Member

Forget the endless travel, frustration and expense associated with attending one of the major music festivals, such as Bluesfest or the Big Pineapple Music Festival, Redcliffe’s Rockin’ 4 the Homeless 2.0 offers an event for all the family, for a fraction of the price. Best of all, it’s less than thirty minutes away from Narangba. Rockin’ 4 the Homeless 2.0 boasts a line-up of thirty acts over three stages, including headlining act Mental As Anything. As a 12 hour event beginning at 2pm on May 9th 2015 at Redcliffe Dolphins Leagues Club, the festival caters to an array of musical tastes – everything from pop and indie to hard rock. The set up allows punters to come and go throughout the festival, which means families can see their favourite acts and still get the kids home at a reasonable hour. Homelessness is not necessarily at the forefront of everybody’s minds when one thinks of this supposedly sleepy seaside town, but it is an increasing issue about which all the community should be involved in reversing. All funds raised go to this year’s beneficiaries, The Breakfast Club and Chameleon House, who state that between 200 and 300 people are experiencing some degree of homelessness in Redcliffe. With a population comparable to that of Narangba, such statistics are concerning.

6

The opportunity to assist in easing the homelessness crisis whilst providing residents with the opportunity to mingle with some of their favourite artists is something which doesn’t come along very often and, when the chance came, local hard rock covers band Dirty Dice were happy to participate. ‘I think it’s important for the community to get together and do something positive for those less fortunate than ourselves,’ says frontman Jinx. It is a sentiment that Faleepo Francisco, an indie rock blues band, echo, having recently performed at charity events for Movember and Starlight Foundation. ‘We found it’s the commitment from event staff to make this a successful show and raise much needed funds that make it an important festival,’ says lead singer Jack Dean. Though it is their first festival line-up, they are looking forward to the experience, and watching others perform when not on stage themselves. ‘It’s great to give our services for Rockin’ 4 the Homeless [2.0].’

Full access to the event is $20 per person. Programming details and tickets are available from www.rockin4thehomeless.com

The Evolution of Oakey Flat Road Flowers by Elle Pieper

Our local flower stall is run by young Ty Coleman. At the age of 14 years old and with the support of his family, Ty started selling flowers to earn money to go on a school trip to Japan. To the surprise of the Coleman family the flowers became more popular than they expected. Two years on, they have expanded to two additional locations and will be starting to grow their own flowers such as roses and chrysanthemums in the coming weeks. Currently they source their flowers from local growers where they can. Any flowers not sold are given away to nursing homes.

Growing up we had the weekly routine of stopping by side of the road to buy a bouquet of flowers from the road side flower stall. It was my delightful job to choose the bouquet that would be given to my favourite person in the world – my grandmother. The role weighed heavy on my little heart as somehow I thought that the beautiful flowers were a reflection on the love I had for my grandmother. The kind flower man would wait patiently while I studied every bouquet, sometimes changing my mind four or five times before making my final decision. The time I took choosing the precious gift for my grandmother was always worth it, seeing the excitement in her caring blue eyes as I would give them to her each week. Sadly my grandmother is no longer with us. However, before she passed away, she told me that the highlight of her week was when she would see my excited, proud face at her front door holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Every day she would look at those flowers with a smile on her face as she remembered me. With Mother’s Day fast approaching I am reminded once more of my grandmother and flowers. It warms my heart to know that even though times have changed, you can still buy flowers from the side-of-the-road stall. It’s not only the memories of my grandmother that make this great, but it is also knowing that when you are buying from a stall on the side of the road that you are supporting locals.

Toilets in Sight for Narangba Park by Yacine Khouzami, MBCC Inc Member

Norfolk Lakes Park on MacDonald Drive, Narangba will likely receive brand new toilet facilities soon after Councillor Bob Millar conducts final consultations with the local community. If the overall response from the community is positive, Cr Millar is hopeful that he will be able to include the project in his Divisional Capital Works Budget for 2015. From there, construction would be subject to detailed planning and supply of the infrastructure. Research suggests that the best location for the toilets would be midway between the existing playground and the BBQ facilities. This position will give maximum benefit from the neighbouring vegetation. As it is only in the planning stages, the costs of construction are yet to be determined. However, Cr Millar ensures that maintenance expenses will be minimal.

8

The brand and model will be determined as soon as funding is secured. It will however include autolocking doors to ensure patrons can only access the facilities during the day. Anti-loitering alarms will also be included to prevent vandalism and graffiti. While it will contain a self-cleaning mechanism, Moreton Bay Regional Council staff will also maintain the facilities on a regular basis. ‘The park, with its pleasant lakeside environment, BBQ’s, playground, outdoor exercise equipment and popular walking paths has become an increasingly popular place for families to visit,’ said Cr Millar. Cr Millar said that it was this increased use of the park and requests from locals and visitors for toilet facilities that was behind this project. This photo is an example only and is not necessarily the make of model being considered by Council.

Is your dog protected with vaccinations?

Vaccination Summary

by Petbarn

Puppy 6-7 weeks old

life

Vaccinating your puppy during the first 14 weeks of their is essential to protecting them against several viruses but did you know that your dog will need an annual booster vaccination and yearly Heartworm injection to keep them protected? Parvovirus (Parvo) and Distemper are the most common, and they can be fatal. Puppies are especially susceptible to Parvo as their immune system has not fully matured. Parvovirus can still be contracted even if your dog doesn’t come in direct contact with an infected dog through contaminated objects or even the ground.

First vaccination Temporary 10 weeks old Second vaccination

14 weeks Ten days after the 14 week vaccination you can take your puppy out in public areas

Adult dog

Death from these viruses is distressing and unnecessary so it’s important as a responsible pet owner that you always keep your dog fully vaccinated.

Annual Booster adult vaccination every year Heartworm injection is also available annually

The first vaccination can be given from 6 weeks of age. Booster vaccination: Your puppy must have at least 2 vaccinations to generate enough immunity to fully protect them. These boosters must be 3-4 weeks apart and one of them must be after the puppy is 12 weeks old as this is the age at which the immunity from the puppy’s mother has disappeared.

Prevent your puppy from contracting Parvo by avoiding public areas or other dogs until at least 2 weeks after their third vaccination.

Your dog will need to have a booster vaccination. One year after receiving the first course of vaccinations, these are given annually for the rest of your pet’s life to keep your dog fully protected.

TIP:

For more information on how to protect your pet and keep up to date with vaccinations, visit your local veterinary clinic.

Some newer vaccines do not require annual booster vaccinations; your vet will tell you when they are next due.

Do It Yourself: Distressed Dresser Keeping up with the latest in interior design trends does not always mean having to break the bank and this month we have a fantastic DIY project that you can do on a budget – and will be a beautiful addition to your home.

Prepare the surface Clean the surface of the furniture. Remove any drawers or other hard ware, wash the piece with warm, soapy water and allow to dry thoroughly. It can be a good idea to allow at least 1 – 2 days to ensure the wood is completely dry. Then sand the surface all over the piece of furniture. TIP: If there are any rough places, or broken parts/wobbly legs etc now is the time to fix them. Rub wax across the surface areas Before you apply your paint, take a wax candle and rub it across the surface of the furniture item. This will cause the paint to roll and peel over the areas where the wax has been applied when it comes to the painting being applied. It’s time to paint Choose your shade of paint, shabby chic furniture looks great when it comes to creamy off-white colours or for a modern take on the look, go for a beautiful bright turquoise or yellow paint! You can choose to just paint one colour or go for a two-tone look like we have done here with turquoise and gold showing underneath. If you are wanting to do a two-tone piece, paint one colour on the first coat and let it dry. After that, apply more wax and then paint a different colour for the second coat. The top coat will come off in places to give a worn look and show the under-colour like we have done in the gold. TIP: Choose a flat or satin paint as high gloss paints generally do not work as well for this look.

‘Shabby Chic’ is very on-trend at the moment and this funky, relaxed look can bring a lovely old-world charm feeling to a room. It is also a look that is very flexible, you can choose to decorate a whole room or even an entire house with a gorgeous shabby chic theme or mix some key pieces with a more modern setting. A great way to start introducing this look in your home is with a gorgeous, distressed dresser or chest of drawers. It is easy and fun to paint and distress your own pieces and today we will show you how. Choose your piece of furniture The fun starts here! Time to go for a hunt through the local second hand stores, garage sales or even your shed if you have some treasures hiding in there to find the piece of furniture you would like to turn into your shabby chic work of art. We will be using a small chest of drawers that you could use as a bedside table or perhaps in your living room. TIP: Make sure you select a piece of furniture that is solid wood, items with a veneered surface will not give the same effect.

Get distressing Allow the paint to dry overnight and once it is completely dry you can start to distress the piece. Have a think about your piece and where the wear on it would be if it was used for generations. On a chest of drawers, this will most likely be around the front edge of the drawers and also around the handles. Lightly rub away the paint in these areas with a piece of steel wool or sandpaper. It is a good idea to go slowly and build up the distressing so you can control how much of the top coat you strip away. Have fun!

Real Estate Wrap Up

with Darren Grimwade

Welcome back after the Easter break and I hope the Easter bunny was good to you all. Now that we are over the first big holiday bump of the year, the market is primed to continue the positive momentum that we have seen building over the past 6-12 months. Record low interest rates are fuelling demand in the real estate market here locally in Narangba. Last week saw the reserve bank of Australia keep interest rates on hold at 2.25%, which is the lowest they have been since the 1960’s and speculation is rife that the Reserve Bank will further reduce interest rates in May to their lowest levels since the 1950’s. These record low interest rates have proved the perfect shot in the arm for the real estate market locally, with larger than normal demand and interest being shown at open homes in the area. There have been plenty of young families looking to take advantage of the low interest rates to leave the rental market and seek the Aussie dream of home ownership or to upsize to something more comfortable. On the flip side we are seeing empty nesters taking the opportunity to downsize and move to more appropriate housing. Equally investors have been flocking back into the market looking to add to their property portfolios with higher than normal returns being achieved due to the low mortgage costs.

Investors are seeing better returns in bricks and mortar real estate than in cash or the volatile share market which seems to be bouncing around due to uncertainty around the world in the economy and the political sphere. Enquiry levels on property in Narangba are at an all-time high and it’s fair to say that it’s definitely leaning to a sellers’ market with plenty of buyers competing for similar properties. However those that are well prepared and ready to buy are reaping the rewards of their research and snapping up properties that have only spent days on the market.

chalkboard wine glasses

Explore Moreton Bay by Walking in May by Moreton Bay Regional Council

Get the family off the electronic equipment and moving those bodies with Moreton Bay Regional Council’s program ‘Explore Moreton Bay by Walking in May’ which delivers a range of walking experiences and small events for children, families and adults. To highlight the diverse walking opportunities in the Moreton Bay Region, a range of free and subsidised activities are provided during the month of May. Kids will burn of some energy with the kid zone activities or perhaps an obstacle course challenge is more their style. Adults can get involved in nature photography and bush navigation skills training. Whether it’s a dinner party or a movie night, I love having friends over for a glass of wine. I am not, however, much of a fan of those awful, tacky wine glass charms. Traditionally used so dinner guests can distinguish whose wine glass is whose, I find them to be ineffective and gaudy. After a few glasses of wine how am I supposed to remember whether my glass had the seashell or the dragonfly charm? Wouldn’t it be easier if we could all just label them? Write our names on them for the evening? That’s the idea behind these DIY chalkboard wine glasses.

You Will Need:

• Wine glasses • Chalkboard paint • Cookie cooling rack or wine glass rack • Bowl or container If you don’t feel comfortable painting the crystal wine glasses you got as a wedding present, I totally understand. You’ll be able to find a set of wine glasses at your local K-Mart or Big W for cheap. I would recommend laying down some old newspaper for this DIY as it does involve paint. Set a sheet of newspaper under your cooling tray and pour your chalkboard paint into a bowl that is wide enough and deep enough to be able to dunk the base of your wine glass into. Creating your very own chalkboard wine glasses is a three-step process: simply dip, drip and dry.

Step 1

Dip the base of your wine glass into the paint; making sure the entire base is covered by the paint.

Step 2

Lift it up out of the paint and allow the excess paint to drip off.

Step 3

Set the glass down on the cooling tray. Repeat with all the wine glasses and allow them to dry overnight. The next time your friends come over for a drink, put out a few sticks of chalk with the glasses so your guests can write their name on the base. No one will lose their glass or get it mixed up with anyone else’s, and all your friends will be impressed at how innovative and crafty you are. Note: Your chalkboard glasses are hand washable only. Be sure not to put them through the dishwasher as it will remove the paint and you’ll have little clumps of chalkboard on all your dishes. A set of these glasses also makes a unique and inexpensive gift. Package them up with tissue paper in a gift box and throw in a packet of chalk – or a bottle of wine!

Your wedding day, the day your baby is born and the day you start your own business are some of the most treasured days in your life. Running your fingers over the words Mr. & Mrs., seeing your newborn’s name printed on the towel they are wrapped in, or looking at yourself in the mirror to see YOUR business logo mirrored back to you. These are moments when reality hits home. However, sometimes this awesome feeling can be dampened by the sting that is the price tag. It can be quite expensive to have small quantities of personalised items created. When you use the words Wedding it feels like the price tag of all the items are doubled. For something so small, babies seem to cost so much and for a small business owner, there is not much capital in the initial stages to use on personalising items with a logo. This is where Threads Embroidery fills the gap. Threads Embroidery was created to help those who want small to medium quantities of personalised embroidery items without the large price. The inspiration for Threads Embroidery happened by accident (or you could say fate) when owner Cathy Martin decided one Christmas she wanted to make personalised aprons as gifts. The aprons quickly became popular with family, and friends. By word of mouth, a business was born. The business started out as a part-time venture for Cathy and her family but due to popular demand, she has recently expanded the business to full time. This allows her to work around her family, especially the special needs of her youngest son. Home businesses are a lot of hard work; however the bonus is that you have flexibility to manage your working hours to suit the needs of your family.

Threads Embroidery aims to be the one stop shop for your personalised items. Over the last six years of the business’ existence. Cathy has prided herself on building a great network of suppliers and complimentary local businesses so that she can source and produce the perfect item for you: from business shirts, sporting caps and even items for special occasions such as weddings and births. Cathy does all of this at the most affordable price and premium products.

How To Encourage Young People To Have More Down Time by Michelle Mitchell, Youth Excel

This has been inspired by a local high school teacher who has children of her own. She was having an interesting conversation with her son. Her initial question was “Why don’t teenagers read as much as they used to?” His response wasn’t that he didn’t want to, but that he didn’t have the luxury to be able to. He felt that there was too much pressure on teenagers to always be busy and productive. I also have four different clients at the moment who would echo this boy’s words exactly. They feel scheduled, driven, pushed, directed and overwhelmed. Although they would never come out and say it, they feel more anxiety than they should simply because of the intensity of their lifestyle. In my words – They don’t have enough margin in their lives.

Here are 7 ways to create adequate margin in young people’s schedules:

1. Recognise a young person’s need for margin. Young people need to play. They need to rest and they need time with their thoughts. Without adequate margin, their lives can become imbalanced, stressful and unhealthy. 2. Avoid constantly scheduling them. So often I hear myself say to my children, “What are you up to now?” or “What should you be doing next?” My underlying message to them is “keep busy”. I have had to deliberately choose to ask, “What are your going to do tonight other than homework?” It’s been emphasising that relaxation is just as important as work. 3. Yes, I also fear that if I stop nagging nothing will get done. If they are organised and on top of things, it is less work for me. Young people actually need to drive their own energy and work pace according

to their personalities and needs. Recognise their differences. Let go as much as you can. 4. Confine jobs and homework to a set time. It is ideal for homework to have a stop and start time. If homework times aren’t set young people tend to procrastinate, and worrying about homework can over-take the whole night. 5. Plan to have breaks. Plan to have dinner together, watch a TV show or go for a walk before bedtime. Plan to create stopping points in your family’s schedule. 6. Value down time. Don’t be afraid to call ‘time out’ if you know your young person needs some down time. School work is important, but not as important as their mental health and ability to enjoy life. A day off once in a while or a weekend without anything on can be just what they need. 7. Ask your young people this question – Do you feel too busy? You will be surprised at their answer. Once there is space in their schedule they may actually pick up a book. Until then I assume they will opt for the faster, higher energy version of entertainment – movies and YouTube.

So you’ve decided to get fit, run a marathon, eat healthy or just make some better choices ... But how committed are you to really make the change? Prior to starting a program I always go through some questions with clients about what their goals are and what they would like to achieve. After going through a few relevant questions I always ask how committed they are on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most committed. Now 9 times out of 10 they score themselves anything from 6-9 … The big question is why not a 10? Because they don’t have the confidence or commitment to really throw ourselves in fully. They leave a little bit of breathing space just in case they fall down and struggle or they lose their mojo. So why do we have this self-doubt? Why don’t we have the confidence to commit and truly give it our all? Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood you said it in has left you. So how do you stay committed and on track to reach your goals? Some people find it easy

and once they have a focus can pretty much keep on track, others will jump on and off the wagon, while some will barely get through the first few days … but the biggest key to success is simply CONSISTENCY. That means you just keep going and consistently get up that little bit earlier, or get those meals prepped in advance. It takes 21 days to make a habit, so just keep going. If you miss one, start again. Just pick yourself up and go again. If you mess up a meal, make the next one count. If you sleep through your alarm, make time later in the day, but make sure you schedule it in and don’t make excuses. Yes it may be challenging but it’s okay if it doesn’t all go to plan. Just don’t throw in the towel and give up, get back on the wagon and start again. You are stronger than you realise and each good decision you make about food and exercise will help you get better for the next time.

Brothers Who else here can get lost on Youtube watching trailer after trailer after trailer for a good thirty minutes or more? Anyone? It happened to me the other day. I was with a friend of mine in the video store ,browsing through rentals and decided to look up the trailer of one. Then, we got distracted by other intriguing trailers in the recommended list. That’s how we found Brothers. It was captivating. If you like war movies, plots that lead you in one direction and then throw you in another, and suspense, then this is the movie for you. Brothers is an intense 130 minute movie about a US Marine (Toby Maguire) who is presumed dead. At home, his wife and two daughters grieve while being looked after by McGuire’s brother, who has just been released from prison. The brother — played by the charming Jake Gyllenhaal — slowly becomes integrated into the family, finding the place amongst them he’d always wanted, right up until his presumed dead brother returns home.

In a refreshing turn of events, Brothers does not go the way you think it will. The movie has a wonderfully tight control over the edge of your seat, with the last forty minutes being a tense portrayal of what happens when people try and fail to keep themselves from falling apart. The characters have just enough background to make you empathise and care about what’s happening, while at the same time making you want to cover your face and peek between your fingers to watch as they do something incredibly stupid. And finally, although Maguire has never been high on my favourite actor list — especially after the third Spiderman movie (total train wreck) — I greatly admire his work in this role. He does a fantastic job at portraying what PTSD is like for soldiers, something which can sometimes be considerably overlooked in war movies. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I was mildly disappointed in the ending, but that can be forgiven in light of the movie’s ability to seize hold of my emotions and wind up such a tight knot of tension in my chest.

Out of ten, I rate BROTHERS: Plot: 8/10

Visual effects: 6/10

OST; 6/10

Overall: 6.75/10

For Timothy Riley

‘Pascal?’ Sabine murmured in the manner of someone finally noticing they dropped something. The way she patted her pockets suggested this “something” wasn’t a boy ensnared in mid-adolescence, but a rat. ‘Pascal,’ she hissed, followed by ‘shootshoot-shoot’, a verbal drumming of fingers done twice: first in taking the Lord’s name in vain, second in prayer. She stared out the window while passengers stared at her— attention diversion meets Pass the Parcel. Sabine’s urgency to find Pascal superseded biological instinct. Apparently Pascal had several of the so-called disorders ordered under the autism umbrella. The doctor’s latest diagnosis? Asperger’s syndrome. Hers stood where the umbrella couldn’t reach: obsessive-compulsive disorder. ‘Diag-nonsense,’ Sabine whispered into glass. She searched the Monet landscape

Pell-mell for Pascal the way she perused his copies of Where’s Wally? when she was supposed to be vacuuming his room. To eyes other than theirs, the copies were pristine. Underneath her stigmas—about Pascal and herself—Sabine knew the diagnoses were only misguided. For Pascal, the world was a jigsaw puzzle upended onto the floor in the naivety one can solve the puzzle in an hour because they want to. The pile of pell-mell pieces intrigued and repulsed him. The invisible string of inevitability pulled the train into Narangba railway station. Sabine disembarked with an amateur ice skater’s lamb legs before an audience of indistinct strangers. Mentally, she slipped. Her left skate chipped her inner frozen lake. The chip turned into a crack; the crack yawned into a crevasse. She slipped underneath with a suppressed death wish. Overhead, the ice re-coalesced as pensive fingers do. The

indistinct strangers watched through the ice and became the other indistinct. Her illusory death transformed her loss into an unruly kite’s string slithering through her fingers. No. The loss was that of the blue balloon from her childhood. When the balloon hurrying toward heaven became entangled with a red one, her pang turned into vicarious bliss. Searching the sky in reminiscence, she recalled her mother’s wisdom: “If you love something, set it free: if it comes back, it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it wasn’t meant to be.” Nature simply gave her balloon to someone more deserving. The bliss, an ominous object in peripheral vision, returned. She couldn’t be what Pascal needed, so she hoped he’d find someone who could. Despite his disordered mind, she knew he would find his way home … wherever that was.

Narangba Youth Scores Bronze by Yacine Khoumazi, MBCC Inc Member

At 14 years old, local sports star Tamara Hotten hurdled her way to win a bronze medal at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in March. After years of intense training, she completed the Under 16 Women’s 200m Hurdles in just 29.36 seconds. As if that wasn’t enough, she followed it up by placing third as part of the Queensland team in the 4 x 100m relay and competing in the state championships for Little Athletics, where she won 2nd in the 100m sprint, 2nd in the 200m sprint and 2nd in the 90m hurdles. She also placed 1st in the 200m hurdles, which broke the state record. This is a fantastic achievement, particularly for someone who disliked hurdles when she first began athletics, and has been competing in the events for less than a year. Certainly, it is a sport which requires a fair amount of dedication, regardless of age. During training season, she spends a lot of time on the track – up to four hours a week for sprinting and up to three for hurdles. When she is not living the life of a super athlete, Hotten is a typical teenager. She watches movies, hangs out with friends and goes shopping – when not catching up on school assignments, that is. Athletics makes Hotten happy and always manages to help her ease stress and take her mind off things. She has had a passion for the sport since she was only five years old, according to father Peter. ‘She always ran along the side of the track trying to race the older girls. She always asked when can she join [Little Athletics], and count[ed] down the birthdays until she finally turned seven and joined the club.’

Jump for Team Bots at Velocity by Katy More, MBCC Inc Member

Amateur BMX Sports team, Team Bots, are using Velocity Fundraising to raise funds for members Vada, Lincon, Haimish, Kiana, Tenniele, Julia and Michael Botfield, who have been invited to compete in the Belgium BMX World Titles in July this year. ‘It’s really a unique situation due to the fact that all seven family members ride BMX at competition level and it is the most members of one family that have ever been invited to attend the BMX world titles!’ said Team Bots spokesperson, Mr Paul Botfield. ‘The family includes five children aged from 6 to 13 and they are truly an amazing family.’ ‘We’re having a two hour disco party with [a] DJ, games, prizes and giveaways. Tickets are thirty dollars per person with fun included at no extra cost. Ten dollars from each ticket sold will go directly to the family.’

The Fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 29th 2015 from 8pm to 10pm with tickets available directly from Velocity, North Lakes. ‘The goal is to raise $1,000 to $1,500 from the night whilst having a whole lot of fun and everyone is invited to attend or donate.’ Mr Botfield explained. ‘Velocity will be a great night out for the kids whilst helping us raise much-needed funds.’ Those interested in donating or attending the Velocity Fundraiser can find out more by RSVPing to the event on Facebook via www.facebook.com/events/852518104811706/, or contacting Paul Botfield directly on 0415 826 367.

She is a great advocate for kids to get involved in athletics and is realistic when giving advice to those wishing to excel in their chosen sport. ‘Athletics has also given me so many opportunities to do things and to go places. I’m so happy that I found a sport I love and succeed at. If you ever find a sport that makes you feel that way, you should definitely stick with it. Make sure you enjoy it, set out goals and be determined to reach them. Keep setting new goals, work hard but have fun while doing it. Do not worry about your competitors, focus on what you have to do, be patient and never give up.’
