Dianne’s off all her Prescription Meds! If you read the June article, “Stephanie’s Story”, you read about my daughter, Stephanie. I initially attended the January Nutritional Workshop earlier this year that Dr. Gravante offers for free, and had invited Stephanie to also attend. I was concerned about my daughter’s health and was seeking information to help her. Little did I know, that I would also benefit greatly! I went for my initial assessment, and saw that I was in need of a healthy nutritional plan, too. I learned the importance of stabilizing my blood sugar by eating 5-7 small meals each day. I began to eat a balanced diet with protein, a good carbohydrate, and a healthy fat. I also drank more water each day, and eliminated the large quantities of caffeine that I was used to consuming. My body began to respond and was in healing and repair mode. My hair, nails, and skin were less brittle and dry. I was told that I had a “glow” about me. My complexion was less ruddy in appearance. I no longer had the swollen joints with pain, especially in my hands, which I had treatments with cortisone shots previously. My digestive system improved with less upset stomach and more regularity. I also began to sleep better at night, not only getting to sleep, but sleeping more soundly through the night. While others around me were getting sick with various viruses and bugs, I was in great health. This was not typical for me being a teacher and around so many children. I had more energy and stamina. I was even able to eliminate medications for anxiety and headaches that were becoming more frequent. My weight did not change, but my body composition sure did! I have lost 8.5 pounds of fat and have gained 3 pounds of muscle so far. With a family history of osteoporosis, and already having osteopenia, I have taken positive steps with nutrition and natural supplements to prevent the progression of the disease. Encouraging a regular exercise program of walking daily by Dr. Gravante, has also helped with all of the above! Being in Menopause has made me evaluate my own health needs. My hormone levels and how they affect my body functions has also been an education for my daughter and me. Thanks to Dr. Gravante, I look forward to aging gracefully and with the best health, too! On the Cover: Body of Health Owner Julie Mills: Focuses on Improving the Quality of Life for Clients By Heidi Campbell The calming sound of Indian flute music wafts through the air, soothing those who enter. The entire client experience at the Body of Health center in Snellville is in fact designed to be just that: soothing. Some clients come seeking therapeutic massage therapy, while others are in need of nutritional and pain management advice. Julie Mills-Watson, the founder and owner of the center, says that her focus is “to help clients heal faster, hurt less, and have a better quality of life.” When her navy fighter pilot husband, Tommy Mills, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1998, Julie learned firsthand how therapeutic massage could improve the quality of life for cancer patients. “Quality of life,” she explained, “is being able to get up, dress, and feed yourself. It is being able to participate in life, and not have to be in a hospital bed.” As her husband’s health deteriorated, they discovered lymph therapy, a method of massage that boosts the immune system by lightly stroking, and thus dumping, the lymph nodes. Julie was drawn to this science, and, eager to learn more about it, she went back to school to become a trained massage therapist. Unfortunately, Tommy passed away before she finished her program, so she wasn’t able to personally use her healing touch with him. She was able, however, to see the effects of the therapies first hand, and it inspired her to continue with her training so that she could help others. In 2012, Julie wrote Here’s the Deal about Cancer, a book that paid tribute to her late husband’s experience. Available on

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and at the Body of Health center, the book shares what Julie learned as the caregiver of a cancer patient. She said, “I wanted to tell people that it makes a difference to take charge of your health. There are ways that you can help the doctors help you. I learned so much [being a caregiver], and I want to pass that knowledge along to people so they don’t have to reinvent the wheel.” After losing her husband, Julie focused her energy on helping others. As a massage therapist, she began specializing in lymph training and focusing on therapeutic massage. When she finally opened up her own center in 2010, she said she wanted to focus all her energy on the nurturing side of healing. “This isn’t your fluff and buff,” she clarified with her warm smile. “It’s not a spa. This is therapeutic body work. We work with people post-surgery, people with degenerative discs, people dealing with pain management, and cancer patients. These people are near and dear to my heart.” While many clients come seeking the Body of Health center’s medical and wellness massages, others are looking to properly fit compression garments, research thermal imaging, pursue foot reflexology, or delve into nutritional counseling. The center truly works to ease the mind and heal the body. Whether people suffer from post-surgery edema, fibromyalgia, back pain issues, or migraines, they can find relief through therapeutic massage. “We don’t poke, prod, or put needles in,” Julie said. “We just help your body heal. We are a safe place. We are gentle. We are not going to hurt anyone; we are only going to do things to make you feel better, not worse. We work a great deal with the elderly, to help them with arthritis pain. They come in stooped over and they walk out

of here standing up straight. I just love that! ” Body of Health employs five therapists, and has built an impressive client list, nearing the one thousand mark. The staff works as a team. “Everyone gets along so well!” Julie said. “Yes, we all need to put bread on the table, but, at the end of the day, it is more about the high fives we give each other because we’ve helped educate someone about a lifestyle change. We all want to continue to learn and to share what we learn.” The therapists work closely with local doctors, chiropractors, and Eastside Hospital to raise awareness of the therapies available. They offer free chair massages at health fairs, as well as at the Relay for Life events at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Free classes are regularly scheduled to teach clients about nutrition and exercise. Julie says, “The best exercise is the exercise that people will do. We empower people to take control of their health.” Julie recalls a stage four cancer client who came to see her a few times. “He came to relieve some unbearable edema in his legs. He read my book and said he wished that he’d read it several years ago, when he was first diagnosed. After he passed, his wife came in and thanked me. I had never met her before. She said, ‘Thank you for helping him in the last stage of his life.’ There wasn’t much I actually did, except for the touch. The wife told me that I gave him hope,” Julie said, pausing for an emotional moment. “That is why I do what I do. I’m not going to save people, but if I can help in one little aspect, it is awesome!”

Going Green was the theme when last we spoke with Ann Weeks, owner of Five Forks Academy in Lilburn, where the 3 R’s also stand for Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Cardboard boxes, such as those in which supplies are delivered, are pressed into service as planter boxes in the garden. When asked if they fall apart, Ann answers with a laugh, “Sure they do!” The boxes’ decomposition is a natural form of composting. This fall the children at Five Forks Academy will plant peas, lettuce, and spinach. Captured rainwater is used to water plants, and when the vegetables their resident rabbit overlooked are harvested, the children sample them raw and steamed. This year, Five Forks Academy added twenty-four state of the art cribs, meeting all the latest safety standards. Ann is more excited, though, about the addition of a Zono Sanitech device, which, according to their website, “kills 99.9% of common bacteria and 99.99% of common viruses” on a multitude of surfaces. According to Ann, the device also eradicates lice and bedbugs. At Five Forks Academy, the Zono is used to sanitize anything that shouldn’t be washed or come into contact with bleach. Once daily, a basket is wheeled around the facility, stopping in at every classroom. Teachers add preselected items including books, blocks, dolls, crayons, and even battery operated toys. Thirty minutes later, the children are excited to see a cartful of cleaned toys coming back down the hall. Ann is also excited about the addition of a sign language program. “I wanted to give the children experience working with someone with disabilities,” she explains. The instructor, Ms. Lucki, has a cochlear implant and grew up using sign language. Pulling a little red wagon filled with flashcards, books, worksheets, and stickers, Ms. Lucki starts in the infant room, teaching signs for eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. “It’s just like teaching any other language,” Ann says. “Infants can communicate very well using sign language.” Older children learn signs for various family members and how to spell their name. In 2005 Ann Weeks fulfilled her passion with the opening of Five Forks Academy. In the intervening nine years, she’s met change and challenge with enthusiasm and creativity, and the children she cares for harvest the benefits.

Necessities by Sherrie Celebrates its Ten Year Anniversary By Heidi Campbell

Smoke RiSe Bottle Shoppe

Purveyor of Fine Wine, Spirits, Beer and Cigars

WELL

H HO

HUG RD.

Necessities by Sherrie, located in Snellville, opened in October 2004, and quickly became the largest intimate apparel shop in the area. Built on a foundation of quality, service, and experience, the knowledgeable staff focuses on each individual, perfectly fitting customers with high quality products. “We work to create a wardrobe under your outside wardrobe,” owner Sherrie Strong explains. “It’s like a house. If you have a weak foundation, your house doesn’t hold up. We are selling that foundation.” The store is stocked with all shapes and styles of bras for athletes, nursing mothers, and those seeking special sizes. According to Strong, their quick-drying sports bras can minimize up to 88% of an athlete’s motion. Their nursing bras, sized up to a double J cup, can be specially converted from a regular bra. “We are bra fitters,” Strong explains. “We have 97 different sizes of bras in the store. If we don’t have it, it is not made anywhere in the world.” A breathable product called Shapewear is also available in every size and style. According to Strong, who wears it daily, Shapewear can instantly take five pounds off a person because it controls the extra thickness in the thighs that is often seen over the tops of pants. “I love Shapewear,” says Strong. “I couldn’t live without it!” The service, quality, and selection of the store hit the TLC network two years ago when Miss Mama June, from “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” came in for a bra fitting and filmed the episode “Lift and Scoop.” Sugar Bear returned to buy Mama June some apparel, and they filmed last season’s “Vowel of Silence” episode. Strong was thrilled that Sugar Bear was comfortable in the shop, and hopes that her SEC football-friendly waiting area will continue to increase her male customer base of which the store has product offerings for as well. The store plans to run an Anniversary sale to celebrate ten years and thank customers. The focus on the individual customer is the key to this business. Strong explains that their service really has an impact on many women. She says, “A lot of women simply have never had a good bra. We want women to walk out of the store feeling good about themselves.”

Getting Schooled: The Goddard School Snellville By Rachael Brice Nillie Pourak, owner, of the Goddard School in Snellville opened in 2007 with fifty children. Today, thirty dedicated faculty members teach and mold over 160 students. Pourak believes the school’s programs are most suitable for growing curious minds, and they play a vital role in a child’s academic, social, and creative development. “The Goddard School is dedicated to advancing excellence in education and raising children’s performance on a continual basis,” Pourak said. “We strive to provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment that encourages a lifelong love of learning.” The Goddard School in Snellville offers six different programs: Infant, Toddler, Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and School Age. Children from six-weeks old to 5th grade can attend the school. Also, a before and after school program is offered. The Goddard School is the only pre-school that has teamed up with Century 21 Learning (P21) that was developed in 2002. The program’s Fun Learning Experience (F.L.E.X.) curriculum, ensures that students are ready to succeed in the 21st century. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity are the four essential skills of the program. “We understand the importance of exploration and its role in developing critical life skills for 21st century learners,” Pourak said. “Our professional teachers provide hands-on activities, enabling students to make real-life connections that bring meaning and purpose to their learning.” During the week students are able to participate in a variety of different activities and lessons that include yoga, ballet, karate, Spanish, and sign language. Since each child learns at a different level and pace, teachers modify each lesson plan to fit a student’s particular needs. The Goddard School also teaches the importance of giving back to the community through participation in different fundraising activities, such as one benefitting The Ronald McDonald House. “It is important for our students to be well-rounded and to teach them the significance of helping families in need,” Pourak said.

Help!

Asking for help is a sign of strength

By Jane Bishop

When I was ten, my family traveled to Miami Beach, Florida so my parents could attend a convention. Staying in a hotel with a pool was a special treat since I had learned to “dog-paddle.” One afternoon, I ran and jumped into the pool. I quickly realized I was in water over my head. As I came up for air and reached for the side, I missed and sunk down again. Panic set in and I forgot to paddle. After going under a third time, I squeaked out “help.” Thankfully, a man reached out and pulled me to the side. Help is a word often not used until a crisis occurs. People have a fear of asking for help because they don’t want to appear weak, incompetent, or out of control. “There is a tendency to act as if it’s a deficiency” (Garret Keizer). Rather than risk appearing weak or be indebted, people do not solicit help, and a problem grows into a crisis. Why not be proactive and avoid a crisis? Help is defined as “to do something that makes it easier for someone to do a job, to deal with a problem, etc.” Psychologist Dr. Deb believes, “asking for help creates an atmosphere of empowerment. It communicates to others that, while you may not have the answers, you are willing to find them and make things better.” Asking for help is not easy, but it is empowering. As I continue to practice asking for help, it “not only gets my needs met but offers me a chance to be touched by another soul” (Nora Klaver). Take a risk. Give yourself permission to ask for help, and be empowered to live4ward today!

Better Grades, Better Scores... Better Students!

No More “What If…” By Jeff Hayes Whether it’s baseball, tennis, or golf, if you don’t follow through, the ball will go off course. The same can be said about our lives. When we don’t follow through, we can go off course; and we may not even know it until we have one of those “what if” moments. What if I had followed through on the idea that I had? What if I had followed through on that promise that I made? What if I had followed through with my childhood hopes and dreams? When discussing the attributes of a common acquaintance, a man once told me that our acquaintance always had a lot of great ideas, but he never followed through. It was as if he knew in his mind that it was a good idea, but for some unknown reason he was afraid to take that all important final step and follow through. How many times have you begun a project, and then became distracted, discovering days, weeks, or even years later, that you never completed what you started? Good intentions serve no purpose, unless you follow through and take action. As we grow older, we realize that there are many more yesterdays than tomorrows. We can never get yesterday back, and tomorrow is not guaranteed. We can regret what we didn’t do yesterday, and we can plan for tomorrow, but today is the only day that we can take the action necessary to put our lives back on course. Don’t let the “what ifs” grow until they dominate your life. Don’t keep letting “I will” turn into “what if.” Don’t just plan for your future – follow through, and let your dreams become your reality.

I’m Pregnant! Should I Really “Eat for Two”?

f1!!/off

First5 Month

Full/Service/Lawn/Maintenance/Program

By Elizabeth Kobe, D.O. The amount of calories that women need during pregnancy is dependent on such factors as pre-pregnancy weight, activity level, and if they are having one baby or more. On average, women should gain 25-35 pounds if they are normal weight before pregnancy. “Normal” refers to a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 18.5-25. Women who are overweight (BMI of 26-29) or obese (BMI greater than 30) should gain less. Women who are underweight are encouraged to gain 30-40 pounds. The energy needs of pregnant women are the same in the first trimester as before pregnancy, and then increase in the second and third trimesters. An extra 340 calories are needed per day in the 2nd trimester, and 450 calories per day in the 3rd trimester. The foods chosen to meet those extra calorie requirements are important. They should come from nutritious foods that provide fiber, calcium, protein, and vitamins. Examples include nonfat fruit yogurt, whole wheat pretzels, and bananas. Excessive weight gain can lead to increased risk of gestational diabetes, increased birth weight, increased risk of cesarean delivery, postpartum weight retention, and increased risk of childhood obesity. There’s an old saying: the more you gain in pregnancy, the more you have to take off after delivery. Some ways to restrict excess weight gain is to limit sugary beverages and fast food. Conversely, poor weight can increase the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight infants. An expectant mother’s activity level also determines how many calories she needs. Staying active in pregnancy is generally recommended unless there are complications. Walking and swimming are just two exercises that can be done. Avoid sports that carry a risk of falling or getting hit in the abdomen, such as skiing, skating, or soccer. Women carrying more than one baby need more calories too—but not double. They also are expected to gain more weight as well. The answer then is NO. Pregnant women do not need to eat for two (adults), but they do need to eat more than they did before they were pregnant –making healthy choices and staying active! Dr. Elizabeth Kobe is with DeKalb Medical Physicians Group Montreal OB/GYN located in Tucker. www.montrealobgyn.com.
