ABOUT THE COVER “A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.” Unknown Teaching requires patience, creativity and enthusiasm to spark a young mind. It’s not just academics, it involves thinking outside of the box to inspire and challenge a student. The ability to captivate a mind and feed it with knowledge is an art that unfortunately is usually under appreciated; however, in light of recent events teachers have taken the national spotlight and have now become our children’s protectors…heroes. They are beacon of lights for our future generation. One of those shining the way is Veteran educator Carol Chandler Wood, a woman on a mission not only to assist but stir drive and direction into her unique students. They say when you are passionate about what you do it doesn’t feel like work. Carol agrees, “I am passionate about young people and assisting them in reaching the academic goals they have set. Working with students is not stressful for me and does not seem like work, rather a blessing”. As a young child growing up in Georgia, Carol recalls wanting to be a teacher, “I often played school with the other children in our neighborhood and was always pretending to write on the chalkboard. I loved going to school and would wake up at 5:00am in the morning due to the excitement!” It’s an excitement that has led her to achieve a Masters degree in Counseling Studies and attain over 30 years of educa-

tional experience. She is now the C.E.O of Total Learning Concepts, a private professional tutorial service, which has centers located in Lilburn, Loganville and Dacula. This center empowers students to reach their full academic potential by developing skills that foster self-esteem, motivation, sound study habits, and self direction. Carol has honed her ability to spark a young person’s capacity by dedicating her life to assisting students through tutoring and helping parents determine when a child needs help. When asked if public schools are doing enough, she responded, “Public school systems are designed to meet the needs of the majority of students (50th percentile) who reside in their community. This means that there are some students who would benefit with additional outside assistance in their education in order reach their full academic potential and goals. It is important for parents to recognize this and applaud the instruction their school provides, yet recognize if and when outside assistance is warranted and then be willing to act upon this.” Carol recommends tutorial sessions for students who display the following: a) Are below grade level in their skills b) Are earning poor grades or grades lower than they are capable c) Are attempting to reach a certain score on a standardized test or grade in a particular course d) Are overly stressed at school and need a professional to help them develop the skills, organization, strategies and

confidence to do well. e) When parents have difficulty teaching their child or if the child is not receptive to his/her parents instruction or intervention. Helping students is Carol’s passion, her mission in life. Her goal is to not only educate the students but to also involve the parent in the process. She believes it’s an essential partnership to enable your children into reaching their potential in life. She urges parents to invest into their children’s education progress, “your children are worth it”.

As we travel through this life, most of us will be blessed with our promised 3 scores plus 10, and some will even live beyond 70 years of age. During this time many will have the good fortune to change the vehicle that they drive and the home that they live in. And they will change these things according to the needs of their lifestyle, their age, or maybe their station in life. And they will adorn these things and beautify them. They will go through great pains selecting just the right furniture, paint and flooring for their home. The will ensure that their car is washed and their tires glistening. We, however, will carry with us this one body that has been housing our heart, our dreams, our laughter, our mobility, our beauty and ultimately our entire life experience. And while we wouldn’t let our home go to ruins or our vehicle fall to pieces; sometimes we will over-eat and under-exercise and allow our bodies to no longer even faintly resemble the temple that it was designed to be! Why would we do that? Sure that extra piece of chocolate cake is delicious! And sometimes we fool ourselves by having a little bit of salad with our favorite heavily caloric salad dressing. And everyone knows the redeeming qualities of broccoli – bathed in a thick artificial cheese sauce?? One of the greatest and most satisfying things that we can treat ourselves to -- is food. And we have three plus opportunities each day to engage in the activity of eating. But, if that is the only way we find ourselves being active, then there is a problem. A problem that leads from one savory moment to another; to then, feelings of depression, regret, constant exhaustion and poor self image. We throw the towel in and trick ourselves into believing that those extra 20 pounds we picked up along the way, are simply par for the course; after all, we just turned 40! Continue on pg 11

FINANCE Going Long By Glenton Ashby

There have been a number of articles about long term care (LTC) insurance recently in various financial planning related publications. Why? Because a lot of change has been taking place in the LTC insurance market over the last several months. Premiums are going up. Coverage features are changing or being eliminated. At least one provider is considering charging women higher premiums than men for coverage (according to a Wall Street Journal article). Some insurance companies are no longer offering individual policies. Long-term care insurance coverage can provide various services, in-home care, assisted living care or nursing home care when you are no longer able to care for yourself or a loved one. Medicare does not provide long-term care and Medicaid options may be very limited. A major reason for the rise in premiums is the current low interest rate environment of the United States. Essentially, because rates are so low insurance companies have not been able to earn the necessary return on investment of premiums to adequately cover payouts when a policy holder begins drawing on their insurance. Additionally, the insurance companies must plan for a continuing low rate environment. So, premiums have been raised in order for enough money to be available for future payments. Additional factors driving higher costs for coverage are higher medical costs and more policy holders than expected making claims on their insurance. Long-term care insurance can be an expensive proposition no matter when it is purchased but it is also prudent in many cases. The earlier and younger you buy LTC insurance the lower the premiums. However, that also means you will potentially be paying premiums for a long period of time. So, considering long-term insurance can present a true dilemma: Do you buy it early so that it is cheaper and you are more insurable, or do you wait a few years so that you are not burdening yourself with an expense whose payoff is, most likely, far in the future. The middle road is probably best, acquiring LTC insurance sometime during the years leading up to retirement. It is possible health or medical issues prior to purchasing LTC insurance may make you uninsurable so that must be part of your consideration. Some things to consider in order to keep costs down: the length of the waiting period before coverage begins and the benefit period – how many years of care will be provided by your coverage. Also, couples purchasing coverage at the same time may get a discount. If you are considering long-term care insurance be sure to include inflation protection in your criteria. This provides protection from rising costs by increasing coverage by a percentage every year. 3% to 5% is recommended, but the higher the percentage chosen the higher the cost of the protection. It is possible policy costs may drop, or at least be stable, in coming years if interest rates rise leading to insurance company investments earning greater returns. As with any consideration of additional insurance guard against creating a financial burden by having too much elective insurance in place. Think about what is best in your current situation and give thought to whether long-term care insurance is something you may need to add to your financial plan in the future. If your retirement nest-egg will be large enough you may not need to have LTC insurance. But having coverage may enable you to retain more assets for your heirs or your estate. Well, this 40 year old knows that I can only live my BEST life, if it is operating through a healthy vehicle. Where my thoughts are not clouded by the images of cheesecake, dancing through my head. Where I am not hauling an extra 40 pounds that my body frame was never designed to carry. Where I have the energy level, that can only be gained through a daily exercise regimen. Where I am able to shop for clothing that is intended to accentuate my shape and not hide it. It is a new year and maybe it is time for a new attitude that can lead to a new YOU – or better yet, lead you back to the old you! There is a LOT more life ahead of you. And today you can make the choice of where you would like to live it. Would you like to live out loud and not cowering in the shadows of your former self ? Would you like to live it full of bountiful energy and not eagerly seeking every opportunity to find the most comfortable chair? You are not simply a mom, someone’s grandma or a middle-aged man. You are AMAZING and living in an amazing county, full of activity, beauty and energy. There are so many things that you have left to do! So many places you have left to go! And so many people you have left to visit! Today is the first day, of the rest of your life! Don’t be satisfied. Be inspired! Be awesome! Be the BEST that you can be on every level. During my years of working with students, I have often been asked, “Why are there so many students in need of extra help with their academics after school? Are teachers and schools doing a poor job? Is the county curriculum lacking in quality? My answer to each time to these questions is always the same. No. Having worked with literally thousands of students 31 years in public education, corporate training, and in a tutorial environment, I can with complete confidence state that many students do not reach their FULL academic potential due to less than ideal study priority, habits, and attitudes.

I often refer to the three legs of a tripod when describing to a parent what is necessary to enable a student to regain a sense of control over his or her academic situation. One leg of the tripod represents current course work. Every student needs to stay current with school course work so he or she can earn good grades and form a solid foundation in which to build future knowledge upon. The second leg of the tripod represents previously taught material. In order to a student to be most successful today, he or she must master the material presented in school during earlier months or school years. The third leg of the tripod represents sound study skills. This is often the leg of the tripod that students neglect or forget about! With effective and efficient study skills, once a student has caught up in previously taught material and become proficient with current course material, if they have sound study strategies in place, it is likely they will be able to work independently on their academics without the assistance of a tutor or others. If the third leg of the tripod is neglected or forgotten, it is probable that students will find themselves in the same situation year after year, requiring the assistance of tutoring and others after school to help make it through their course work. In other words, if only two legs of the tripod are in place, the tripod will fall over. Not only that, but a student will not reach his or her FULL academic potential until study skill strategies have been taught, applied and utilized! If you are the parent of a student who is not reaching MAXIMUM academic potential, struggling with course work, in need of recurrent assistance, or has grades which are one or two letters lower than usual, provide him/her with the tools necessary to resolve academic and study skill deficiencies now, making sure all three legs of the tripod are solidly in place. This will enable the student to stand up strong academically so the tripod doesn’t tumble over and neither will they!

Because of the heavy emphasis in school curriculum on math, English, social studies, science, and technology, there is little time for schools to incorporate a true, comprehensive study skills curriculum into a student’s course schedule. Elements of study skills that are necessary for a student to reach his or her academic potential include good note taking skills, memorization techniques, reading strategies, organization, goal setting, test taking techniques, and textbook usage, just to name a few areas.

Instead of a resolution, make a New Years Revolution!

If you’re like most Americans, a long, ambitious list of resolutions is as much a part of January as is that pile of unwanted gifts in your bedroom that need to be returned. Question - do you keep many of those resolutions? I’d like to suggest a change for 2013 - instead of a resolution, make a New Years Revolution! After all, a resolution is merely an intent, but a revolution is a true change. One of the key success factors in realizing true change - whatever the starting point may be - is simply being accountable to another person. Statistics have shown that those who are in relationship with a partner are far more likely to accomplish their goals than those who try and go it alone. In a recent interview, Jillian Michaels, the fitness expert from the television show, “The Biggest Loser”, stated that even she uses a personal trainer because she lacks the self-discipline to stick to her workout schedule! So why do we have such a need for companionship, friends, and team? Genesis 2:18 makes it clear that God did not create us for a life of isolation, but rather to be in relationship with Him and with those whom He created. In other words, we were born with the need for companionship, friends, and team. My work at Body of Health confirms this every day. Every person I know has a need for human touch and to be truly understood.

As for our minds, how about the goal of going back to school? This one is a major quality of life issue because it can lead to so many open doors for us. I tell young people all the time that college is merely a four-year-long test. It’s a test to see if they can work through adversity and discipline themselves for an extended period of time in an effort to accomplish something important. If they can do that for themselves, employers may view them as being able to do the same for their companies. Here again, having a serious study partner or group can make this long, steep road a little flatter. As for our souls, finish this sentence, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask...” It’s one of life’s great ironies isn’t it? Hoard all you can and you die empty. Give all you can and, just like George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, you somehow become “the richest man in town”. Struggling with where to serve? Consider this - there are 50 assisted living facilities in Snellville and the surrounding areas; there are 1.9 million people in Georgia on food stamps; and Georgia has one of the five worst high school graduation rates in the nation. There’s no medicine for the soul like service.

A hundred years ago, babies were dying in orphanages from a form of severe malnutrition known as marasmus. Plenty of food was available to them, but they simply wouldn’t eat. Then an amazing thing happened. When the babies were held and given ample amounts of touch, they became responsive and began to eat and to thrive.

If you would like to start a bit closer to home, how about a new project like painting a house or picking up a craft. How much more fun would that be if you had a friend or spouse to help? What about growing your own organic garden and then sharing with a neighbor? There are lots of garden clubs around the area. So, in short, pick what you like, pick who you like, and get busy making the world a better place!

Another interesting study involved elderly volunteers at neo-natal wards. The volunteers were asked to hold and massage a group of unclaimed newborns. These older men and women reported having fewer bouts with anxiety, having to make fewer doctor’s visits, and having to take fewer medications. Having now been a massage therapist for nearly six years, I have seen touch accomplish what both medicine and medical procedures were unable to do. Human touch gives life to all involved!

I offer all of this to simply say again that walking alone is a poor choice no matter what the journey. Partner up with a friend or spouse instead and create new goals together. Have you noticed that this “younger generation” depends entirely too much on the computer and cell phones?! Whatever happened to interacting with live human beings whom you can see, hear, and actually touch? On line chats and blogs and even letters are fine, but there is no substitute for creating personal friendships. I once heard about a boy who was going off to war. He promised he would write his girlfriend every day and did. She eventually married the mailman. There’s just no substitute for “being there”. Now, about those New Years revolutions - why not do something for your mind, body, and soul. As for our bodies, most of us want to get off to a good start by losing at least a few pounds. I challenge you to focus on eating healthy foods rather than looking at the numbers on the scale each morning. Educate yourself about the benefits of eating raw fruits and vegetables. Know how to read a food label and understand what you are putting into your body. Involve your friends or family by doing something such as starting a healthy recipe exchange. Then be sure and make time to get together to taste the results. I promise you, focus on these things and the numbers on the scale will gently take care of themselves. Another popular goal is to start exercising. You don’t have to spend a fortune and you’re not preparing for the Olympics here either. How about this - get a workout CD and invite a friend over to burn off a few calories together? Substitute this for your morning designer coffee get-together. You’ll save hundreds of calories and about five dollars! Walking or running doesn’t cost much either, but yet yields plenty of benefits. As for something like tennis, I think there are one or two players in the Atlanta area. Did you know that the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association or ALTA has over 80,000 members with teams for every skill level?! If you think a gym membership is the thing for you, that’s fine, too. Just make sure you get involved and make new gym friends who will bring out the best in you. Otherwise, you’ll soon dread going and find yourself paying the gym owner for the privilege of sitting in your own house.

Unfortunately, many children are not nearly as active as they need to be. It is clear that along with poor diet, physical inactivity has contributed to childhood obesity tripling in the past 30 years. Research has shown that children who develop basic motor skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, jumping, skipping, and balance are more likely to grow into healthy active adults. Studies have shown that daily physical activity helps children academically as well. Learning basic physical skills is essential to the healthy growth and development of your child. Dr. Stephen Sanders, author, professor, and director of the School of Physical Education and Exercise Science at the University of South Florida is a member of the Primrose Schools Education Advisory Board. He says that children do not necessarily learn physical skills on their own. He has found they need guidance and assistance from adults, challenging activities, and opportunities to practice and refine physical skills.

Promote a feeling of success when you play with your child. If your child is not yet able to successfully throw and hit a target, encourage them to move a little closer so they can be successful. Skills are acquired incrementally. Children who do not experience success have a tendency to quit and not practice. Acknowledge their efforts with specific comments. No matter what your child’s skill level is, be a supportive coach. They will benefit from your encouragement.

It is as important as being able to give it.” ~ Pema Chodron One of the most profound teachings in regards to giving and receiving came from my dear friend Edith. I met Edith at church many years ago and I would drive her to and from church all the while soaking up her wisdom. We would usually go out to breakfast after church and she would order her favorite meal, a Belgian waffle with strawberries. Edith was 80 years old when I met her and she was on a limited income so I was always very happy to pick up the check. Until one day when Edith insisted on paying the bill. She told me that if I did not allow her to give, I would be stopping the flow of her good. In that startling moment I learned that I must be a gracious receiver to keep the flow of giving and receiving moving in both our lives. In order to create balance in our lives and within ourselves, we must be able to receive as well as give. The flow between these two states is as natural as the breath; allowing in and then out. You wouldn’t think of exhaling and never drawing in another breath, would you? The act of giving is often paired with being good, noble, and loving. The act of receiving is about letting go, being open, and vulnerable. In her book Creating True Prosperity, Shakti Gawain explains “In order to receive, we have to acknowledge some need or desire for what is being given. Our discomfort with vulnerability makes receiving very challenging for many of us. It can put us in touch with deep feelings of unworthiness.” In order to be good receivers we must learn to love and honor ourselves.

New Year’s Resolutions for Pet Owners Resolve to make 2013 the best year ever for your pet! Whether your pet has been with your family for some time or you welcomed a new pet into your home for Christmas, now is a great time to set some realistic goals in regards to a happier healthier pet. Training: Get to it right away! It’s never too soon or too late to lay down a foundation of good manners. I have always told my kids, manners make you nice to know. Well it’s the same with dogs. A well behaved dog is welcome in many more places. Routine: A set routine makes pets of all kinds feel more comfortable and safe. Create feeding, exercising and playtime routines and stick to them. Healthy eating habits/nutrition: I can’t stress how important and related to behavior, whether positive or negative this is. If you put good in you’ll get good out. Healthy natural and holistic foods are the best. And I’ll give you a hint: you won’t find them in a grocery store! Find a good pet food store near you, preferably privately owned. Socialize: Socialize, Socialize! This should be a lifelong habit for your dog. A dog that is properly and continuously socialized is better equipped to meet all kinds of people, other dogs, children etc. Exercise: A well exercised dog is calmer and better able to focus and respond to your commands. They are also happier and healthier! Playtime: Don’t confuse playtime with exercise. Playtime is a reward for having done something of value. Playtime creates excitement. Exercise (walking) creates calm. Make time each day to do both! Your dog will be happier and so will you!! Grooming: A great way to spend quality time with your dog? Yes! With the appropriate tools this can be very relaxing for your dog. Teaching your dog to allow you to brush their teeth takes a bit of time but the money you will save at the vet will be well worth it. Education: Get educated on your pet! Their breed, exercise requirements, nutritional needs etc. The library and internet are great places to start. Also your vet, pet sitter or dog trainer are a wealth of information.

Happy New Year 2013!!

Most of us start the New Year with a list of resolutions on how to eat better, get more exercise, and be kinder to over-worked selves. There are so many reasons why we aren’t already taking better care of ourselves, from a fast paced schedule, juggling work and family, to not knowing how to cook a healthy well balanced meal. Juicing may be a quick and nutritious way to get a jump-start on a healthier 2013. This month’s Your Resident Gourmet’s column talks about the pros and cons of juicing and even shares some really great juicing recipes. Here’s to a better you in 2013! Chef Jennifer The benefits of juice detox? Most people juice between 1-5 days in an effort to lose weight, improve their diet and eliminate the unhealthy foods they currently consume. Clearer skin and relief from chronic health issues such as fatigue, constipation, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome are also well known benefits of juice detox. *Contact your health professional if you are thinking of juicing for longer than 5 days The side effects? While there are definite benefits to doing a juice detox, there are side effects as well. As with any type of detox the first few days usually present the same common symptoms - headaches nausea, dizziness and sometimes bad breath. You will be more likely to experience headaches if your diet contains large amounts of caffeine, sugar, or sodium. You’re also likely to have frequent urination, diarrhea, and fatigue experience in the beginning of your juicing but by the end you should have a vast increase in energy. What do I need to ‘juice’? You will need a juicer that fits your level of use and your budget! There are a variety of juicers on the market and picking the right only takes a little research. When out shopping for your juicer feel free to ask lots of questions about its features and check its warranty. Once you have your juicer you’ll want to load up with fresh fruits and vegetables. Spinach, apples, kale, collard greens, beets, blueberries, strawberries and carrots are a great choice. Bananas don’t juice and using too much citrus fruit may irritate your stomach, so limit your lemons, limes, and grapefruits. Juicing vs Blending? Yes, you can still do ‘juicing’ while using your blender, there will just be a bit more work involved. When you use a juicer to juice your food you are eliminating the fiber from the foods which decreases your digestion to almost zero. By placing your foods in a blender you are not eliminating any of the fiber and your body will need to digest the ‘juice’ the same way as if you were to eat it raw. To get around this issue, simply strain the blended juice before drinking any of it. Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove all of the pulp from the juice.

Tips for the Picky Eater

Family meal times are especially important for toddlers. Toddlers learn a lot from watching their parents and siblings. Family meal time allows you to model healthy eating habits, table manners, and enjoy quality time together. Allow children to help in the meal preparation with age appropriate tasks. Even toddlers can help by carrying placemats to the table or passing out the napkins. Sit together at the table, serve the fold “family style”, and offer 3 – 5 different foods. Allow each family member to choose from what is on the table. Serve familiar foods with unfamiliar foods and favorite foods with not so favorite foods. Do not nag, prompt, or bribe your child to eat. Do not cheer and clap when your toddler tries a new or previously rejected food. Simply remain neutral and do not interfere. Your child should sit with the family even if he / she chooses not to eat. Steer discussions away from the food and instead share stories about the day or upcoming plans. Enjoy the meal and the time together. Be present with one another. This means no television, no video games, and no phone. Here are some tips: • Remember the wisdom of Ellyn Satter: Parents are responsible for the what, when, and where while children are responsible for the if and how much. • No rewards for eating. No punishment for not eating. • Limit juice and milk intake between meals and snacks. • Do not force. If you try to force children to eat a particular food, most will do the exct opposite and refuse to eat it. • Try to incorporate a food a child likes into each meal. • Visit local farmers markets. Let your kids pick out the food and meet the farmer. • Begin a family garden. This can range from a simple tomato plant on your deck to herbs to a full garden.
