Kevin’s Story

Please join us for this One Night Only Celebration with over $3,000 in Give-aways,

Cocktails, and Hors D’oeuvres. April of last year I decided that it was time for me to get my diet under control. I was always active, camping and hiking, but over the years I had gained a good bit of weight. I was also diagnosed with diabetes and high cholesterol. This was a wake-up call for me….I wasn’t even 40!

Lost 45 lbs

I was looking for a healthy way to lose the fat and heal my metabolism through Functional Medicine. That’s when I decided to see Dr. Gravante and follow her recommendations. Along with a proper diet and supplements for my specific health issues, Dr. Gravante also supplemented my diet with functional food meal replacements – also commonly known as a “protein shake”. I was pleased to see that the protein shakes she recommended used good ingredients and were thoroughly tested. I had heard that a lot of popular protein shakes had soy, heavy metals or a poor source of protein and so I wanted to make sure I was picking the healthiest powder. For the last 10 months I have followed Dr. Gravante’s Program. I also included running for my regular exercise. I’m happy to say that I have lost a total of 45 pounds. My A1C has gone from a 7.4 to a 5.8 (which means I am no longer diabetic!) and I am no longer on statins – instead I use a natural, healthy supplement to control my cholesterol. Thank you Dr. Gravante and staff for helping me be a healthier me!

ABOUT THE COVER Times are hard. Many people are facing unemployment, homelessness, and countless other difficult situations. Families have to make tough decisions like down sizing to a smaller home, eating out less and plain out spending less. Sometimes this results in families being faced with the heart wrenching decision of giving away a pet because they can no longer afford the cost of pet food. Overwhelmed local animal shelters working at full capacity are becoming more prevalent in and around middle class areas hit by the economic downturn. Families not only distraught by their financial woes have to deal with the grief of having to give up or put down their beloved pet which in many cases have become a special part of their family. But just when it seems there is no hope out of the dark looming cloud appears a silver lining called Tom Wargo, a man who literally brings the joy back to an otherwise bleak outlook. Fourteen years ago Tom saw a need and felt the urge to act. He realized many families were facing difficult hardships yet able to receive assistance from local food banks, were still facing the grim task of putting their pets up for adoption or in extreme cases choosing to euthanize their faithful friends out of sheer desperation. Tom knew there had to be a better solution and therefore sprung to action. In 1997 he began handing out pet food and supplies from the back of his pick truck on a shoe string budget (solely financed by him). Tom continued his enkindled efforts and in

Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen

2008 opened the first Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen. Years later Daffy’s is going strong and expanding every day. Tom is excited to see plans that had been in the works for many years finally come to fruition; with recent media exposure Tom is aware Daffy’s will soon become even busier but he is taking it all with stride because this is his mission in life; to help people feed and care for their pets. “There shouldn’t be any reason people can’t afford to keep their pets”, says Tom in a heartfelt tone. Daffy’s pet soup kitchen will soon open the doors to a Pet supply store in which all proceeds go towards charity and will be completely ran by volunteers. Daffy’s will also be partnering with the Gwinnett Animal Control Shelter at the Gwinnett Fair Grounds offering educational services, 48 hours of straight spay and neuter services, as well as adoptions and vendors on May 17th through the 19th. Tom’s enthusiasm is contagious as he reiterates the needs facing this organization, “we need sponsors, volunteers and donations to keep this going because one day I want Daffy’s to be available all over the nation. My goal is to keep families and pets together.” For more information visit www.Daffyspetsoupkitchen. info

FINANCE I Have How Much Student Debt?? by Glenton Ashby

Why is student loan debt such a big problem? Harsh reality says that in most cases student, parent or both will be facing a student loan debt situation. For the parent this will often be on top of mortgage debt, car loan debt and the costs of daily living. For the student this will be something that crimps his or her new free and independent lifestyle as they begin their work life and, eventually for some, their family life. A student may not be required to begin repaying a loan until after graduation. But trouble can start early if there is no job or income is insufficient when the first payment comes due. If things are not managed well from the beginning the debt can balloon as interest accrues. Worse yet, penalties might also be imposed if payments are not timely or are missed altogether. What to do about managing and eliminating student loan debt? Both parent and student should plan now how they will deal with student loan debt later. It may be that when the student is done with college and gainfully employed (hopefully) they should consider directing funds toward paying off college debt rather than fixating on getting their “own” place or a fancy car. Maybe they spend a year living at home rather than paying rent somewhere. That may not be the first choice for parent or child but it may be mutually beneficial if one or both are liable for student loan debt. Student loan payments will have to be part of the budget for one or both of you. There are plenty of stories in the news about both students and parents being crushed by improperly handled student loan repayment obligations. Making a plan right up front will bring benefits later. Think short-term pain in exchange for long-term freedom or peace of mind. Parents, be serious about dealing with college-related debt and strongly encourage your child to be serious about it also, especially if you are a co-signer on his or her loan. Short-term pain can make the long-term sailing smoother for everyone involved. Recent graduate Irene Joseph offers some personal insight. She says that counseling is required before getting a federal loan. There is entrance counseling to make clear the responsibilities being taken on by the student with a government loan. There is exit counseling that addresses issues related to loan repayment, interest accrual and dealing with problems in loan repayment, among other things. Irene’s school actually has a program in place to work with students to raise their awareness of student loan debt issues before they graduate and to help them make plans to deal with their debt. She says she has mapped out a 3-year plan to pay off her debt. Having the issue in focus right after graduation will be important. However, making a plan and executing the plan is key to managing and eventually putting the student loan debt behind you. Talk to graduates or parents who are currently dealing with student loan debt. They may be able to help you bring some focus to the issue and help you make a good plan for coping with your student debt. EDUCATION Corner The Importance of a Good Vocabulary Improving your vocabulary is one of the most important academic investments you can make, however, it is often overlooked. Most of us use slang words and phrases, simple words, and at times even improper grammar when we speak and write. Good vocabulary is sometimes ignored and is considered to be somewhat “out of style”. Young people and those seeking college or job acceptance need to be careful about their choice of words because a broad vocabulary will enhance their communication skills, thus causing them to be a more effective speaker, a better conversationalist, and a more convincing leader. We have probably all been judged by our vocabulary many times recently without even knowing it!

Children Lending a Hand: Teaching your Child the Importance of Cooperation and How to be a Team Player

Whether we realize it or not, every time we speak, we use our language to immediately tip others off about how educated, competent, and successful we are. It’s not surprising, therefore, that studies have shown that a powerful vocabulary is directly linked to success, status, and income. Benefits of a strong vocabulary are: Grants you greater respect and credibility - When you are broadening your vocabulary, people will start to pay more attention to you and begin to follow your lead. Boosts your career – Your superiors at work will likely view you as competent. Improves your communication & equips you to easily express your ideas - Having the right words to express your ideas effectively will make a difference in getting your point across. Improves your writing – You will create the impression you intend in your emails and letters. Improves your ability to earn high grades at school or college – You will be writing so well that your grades will likely improve. Improves your confidence with words and conversation – You will reduce the amount of stuttering and stammering for the right word and be able to make your point boldly and clearly without losing others’ interest. Improves your score on tests such as the SAT, ACT, GMAT, and GRE – You will have greater confidence with an advanced vocabulary when taking these type of tests. Improves your spelling - When your emails and letters contain no spelling errors, people will likely view you as educated and may even assume you have a high IQ. Empowers you with advanced reading and comprehension skills –You will be able to understand the words and concepts in most everything you read. Improves opportunities for promotion and career progression – It has been proven by numerous studies that a good vocabulary is a strong predictor of career success. Having this knowledge will give you a distinct edge over your competition. Now that you know the benefits of a having a broad vocabulary, it is important to get started now to enhance your own. For suggestions on the steps to take, you may contact me by email carol@totallearningconcepts.com and I will provide a list of techniques which should prove beneficial.

Teaching your child what it means to be cooperative and a good team player goes hand in hand with teaching responsibility. As your child develops emotional and physical skills, he will typically be eager to help you do tasks around the house. This is an opportune time to start involving your child in specific, age-appropriate responsibilities that will help him build a sense of pride in being able to contribute to the smooth functioning of your home. Children observe the behavior of the adults in their lives, and learn from what they see. If you model cooperation at home, you will be teaching how lending a helping hand can make almost any job easier. Being a contributing member of a team requires working together toward a common goal, whether it is clearing the table after dinner, picking up toys in the family room or helping carry the groceries inside the house. Family is the first and most important team your child will ever be on. Learning the part she plays on the team will help her establish a foundation for being cooperative, responsible and self-sufficient—beginning now, but with a far reaching impact on her future! “Learning to be a team player at home is a value that will transfer to other parts of your child’s life—his classroom and community,” says Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of education for Primrose Schools. “The more your child is able to contribute to cooperative ventures, the more willing he will be to lend a hand and help other people.” Here are a few ways you can teach your child to be a cooperative team player at home: Establish chore time. Approach family chores and decisions as a team and you may be pleased to find that your little ones want to get involved! Include your child in conversations about setting goals, working together with a common purpose, and what it means to be a part of a family – even little ones enjoy having a say. Emphasize cooperation. You can turn almost any children’s game into a team building activity when you place emphasis on the aspects of the game that involve teamwork and cooperation-or simply make up your own game. For example, take your family to a favorite park and have a scavenger hunt for litter and make a list of all the items your family members find. You could even make a poster to go with the list of what you found to post in the community center to discourage littering. Offer specific feedback and encouragement. Enhance your family’s experience by discussing the specific contributions that each member made and how important it was. Direct acknowledgement of a job well done and the outcome will give your little ones needed encouragement and help them understand the benefit of their contribution. Health and you have enough time or resources to take good care of themselves. My clients are the MVP in the game of life. They can hurt less, heal quicker and have a better quality of life if they only had a game plan. That is what we all need …. a game plan. This takes thought, planning, and homework. I can work out your kinks, but you have to do your part as well. Twenty minutes in the morning is enough time for you to prepare a healthy lunch for work (instead of eating out), do some stretching, and drink a full glass of water. I promise you, you’ll like how you feel. A good word for all of us - turn off the computers and television and spend that time exercising, cooking, resting, reading, and just…..being. I feel like I have to start over with a client when he does not do his homework. I have to spend longer on tissues that would be softened if the client had just done the stretching exercises and increased his water intake. Then the client gets frustrated because it is taking longer to release the muscles and reduced the pain.

It’s a team effort and you’re the MVP

If you just do a few of the things that are required by every individual to stay healthy, you will be ahead of the game. I am here to guide and help you, but we have to work together. It is up to you to value yourself enough to be responsible for your participation in your health and in the game of life!

Have you ever hurt yourself just by doing the simplest things? For example, when you pick up a basket of laundry, have you ever strained your back? When you’ve reached for a glass on the top shelf, have you ever pulled your shoulder? When you get out of your car after driving a long distance, are your first several steps nothing short of painful?

Remember, it took time for your body to start hurting, so it will take time for it to heal. There are no short cuts to healing. You have to have manual massage therapy, drink your water, stretch, and exercise. Eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible in order to build your immune function. This is a team effort, so be a MVP and do your part in taking care of your body.

These things did not just “happen”. They usually are a result of years of self-neglect that has led to the moment when your body finally says, “NO MORE”! Often times we then start popping some sort of pill to help us cope with pain and get through the day. Consider this, your body may be talking to you. It is trying to warn you of problems that are manifesting. Rather than talk, it should be shouting because, for most of us, we are just too busy to take care of the bare essentials such as drinking enough water, consuming enough nutrition, and getting enough rest.

Julie Mills, CMT, LLCC of Body of Health See our ad on page 4 www.bodyofhealthandlife.com

By the time most people make it to my office, they are usually hurting in one way or another. Once I ask about their lifestyle, I can usually get to the root of the issue pretty quickly. I tell them that while I’m happy to work with them, they have to do their part as well in taking care of themselves and preventing injuries. Over time our muscles get dry and tight if we do not drink enough water and stretch. They can become like an old rubber band that snaps when you stretch it just a little. I think you would agree that we have become a society of conveniences. Everything is instant. Even our oatmeal. What we need to understand it that our bodies are not “instant”. They require long-term care. We have to take care of them like we do a car. If you could only own one car for life, how would you care for it? Would you drive it as fast as it would go? How often would you change the fluids? What type of fuel would you use? Our bodies need fuel as well. You wouldn’t put sugar into your gas tank so why would you put it into your body? Our good fuels come in the form of water, veggies, seeds, and nuts? Our bodies digest and absorb these type of things naturally. Unfortunately, most of us do not get nearly enough to sustain our health.

Tree Removal • Trimming • Stump Grinding

We are expected to work long hours and then get home just in time to shuttle kids around or facilitate a meeting of some sort. These are not bad things, but you need to find time for yourself. You do not have to join a health club to find health. You can do stretching routines at home for twenty minutes. You can walk the neighborhood. You can go to bed thirty minutes earlier. You can turn off the TV and accomplish those “honey-do” items which burn calories and, afterwards, still have the time and energy to sit down and read a book with your kids. I say all of this because I am often so frustrated. I love my clients like members of my own family and want them to be at their very best. It is frustrating to hear that my clients do not

Fitness How to Maintain and Increase Your Willpower It’s breakfast time – do you get up and cook a healthy breakfast, like an eggwhite omelet with veggies, or stop somewhere on your way to work and purchase a pastry, or a McAnything? Later that day, do you hop on the treadmill or continue that Walking Dead marathon? Making healthy choices takes a whole lot of willpower. It takes the mind over body decision to ignore temporary pain and discomfort in order to pursue a long-term goal. The urge to eat just one (or two) of the freshly baked cookies your spouse just baked or to stop by a drivethrough can be so tempting, but did you know that the more you exercise your willpower, the stronger it gets? Just like your muscles! Think of your willpower in terms of a physical muscle that you strengthen every day. Exercising and eating right every day is a challenge at first, but it gets easier as time goes by. This actually applies to everything in life; if you have willpower in one small area of your life, it becomes easier to exercise it in every area.

Men there are Alternatives...

For example, if you’re trying to tighten up your budget and you tell yourself “no” as you pass the shoe section of Target, it will be easier to say “no” to that breakfast pastry the next day. At the same time, though, you can only say “no” so many times before you crack. So set priorities and reward yourself with something if you’ve successfully won the battle against dessert or you’ve gone to the gym every day. The best bet is to make it easy for yourself so that you don’t have to deplete your store of willpower. Don’t keep confectionary delights in your home – fill it with healthy snacks that you can take on the go. Plan in advance, too. If you already know what you’ll be eating and what time you’ll exercise, it’s much easier to follow through with. Commit and do it!

Children

As we head into spring time in Georgia, we are all starting to notice the coating of yellow dust on everything outdoors. This coating marks the start of pollen season in Georgia, always a rough time on any allergy sufferers, but particularly on children. Allergies are the body reacting to harmless external substances as though they are invaders like bacteria or viruses that should be fought off. As our body becomes sensitive to these pollens or dust mites, every time we encounter them, our body will react. For some people it is small reactions like a clear runny nose, or others it can be large reactions causing coughing, wheezing, headaches, and other symptoms. Pediatric allergies can often be mistaken for colds or throat illnesses due to the symptoms. Allergies have also been found to contribute to chronic ear infections and sinus infections in children (John Hopkins). To help your children breathe easier this spring as inhalants such as dust, ragweed, pollen and animal dander are abound, we offer a few simple tips…

Change behaviors to remove triggers such as pollen or dust from your child’s life. Be aware of if your child is displaying dark circles under their eyes, acting tired, sneezing or coughing more than usual, or has red, itching eyes. All of these are symptoms of allergies. If you notice a pattern of problems every year, discuss with your physician if your child needs to see an allergist. Discuss with your physician if your child should be taking a daily antihistamine or decongestant.

Health Tried Everything and Still NOT Losing Weight? You’ve heard the old adage; “You are what you eat”, but what about “You are as healthy as your stomach”. Yes, the latest research confirms that the digestive system is an important indicator of sickness and health. Discovering what your body needs and how it reacts to food is a valuable tool in creating health. When you eat foods that are sensitive to your unique body, it leads to increased inflammation, which triggers other symptoms, diseases and weight gain. Medicines are not the answer! Anti-inflammatory and other drugs on the market today don’t resolve the underlying problem causing the inflammation but cover it up increasing the risk of drug side effects and adverse reactions. A diet made up of processed foods, sugars, high fat and artificial ingredients is bad for us but what most of us are missing is the food sensitivity link which leads to chemical imbalances in the body. Food Sensitivity testing is just one way to find out which foods are causing inflammation in your body making you sick and literally stopping you from losing weight! That’s right – it may not be your fault. Having an intolerance to the foods you eat, even healthy foods, can be preventing you from dropping those pounds, having more energy, sleeping and feeling better. Specialized testing is an easy first step to identifying underlying problems and returning your good health. An effective customized, dietary program can be created to desensitize you. The process takes about 3-6 months depending on how sensitive you are to particular foods. It also provides you with the proper nutrients and vitamins to detoxify, repair and rebuild a better, lighter and healthier you!

Counselor’s Corner Leaning Into Transition

“Things do not change; we change.” -- Henry David Thoreau

Have you ever had a change thrust upon you and you felt like kicking and screaming? Or perhaps you’ve made many positive changes all at once. Either way, change is a transition time that can bring a sense of overwhelm to our lives. Our daily life is filled to the brim with transitions. Actually life is one big transition as we die to the old each day and keep moving ahead. Some transitions are joyful such as the birth of a baby, a marriage, buying a new house, or starting a new career. Others transitions bring sadness, anger, or regret such as the death of a loved one, an accident, a divorce, or the loss of a job. What all these events have in common is transition. These events change us and our lives. Webster’s Dictionary defines transition as “a passing from one condition, form, stage, activity, place, to another”. The process of transition starts with an ending, next is transition time, and eventually a beginning appears. Transition time is the in-between time and is most commonly described as a feeling of being in limbo, emptiness or being stuck. And it is. It is a place where ideas germinate and it is where we can begin to accept change. It can feel unsettling because we cannot see, touch or feel results yet. We must live with the unseen and be with what is in order for a beginning to emerge. This is a time when we explore and grow on the inside. In his book Transitions, William Bridges explains that if we deny this important in-between stage of change “the transition process fails to provide the person with the enrichment that is one of its natural but almost forgotten gifts”. As you experience transition in your life, it is important to honor and acknowledge all the feelings that arise. Emotions are energy and if you ignore them, they will wait and stop you from moving forward fully in understanding. Then you can begin to explore options and listen for inner signals that herald a new beginning. As you surrender and lean into the process, you will grow into a deeper sense of self and the gifts will appear.

Nothing In Life Is Free. A Philosophy that works perfectly with dogs! Ever wonder why your dog listens to you, sometimes? When you ask for a behavior or give a command sometimes they oblige you and sometimes they don’t, or sometimes you have to repeat the command several times before they oblige you. Sound familiar? Is it possible that you are regularly rewarding your dog for doing nothing? Think about this…If you went to work and they told you that starting today you would be paid to do absolutely nothing. Yippee! Just show up and you will receive a paycheck (you’re just that cute). Even more shocking you will in fact be paid for exhibiting undesirable behaviors. Sounds ridiculous right? What if after some time of getting away with this tomfoolery all of a sudden, out of the blue they asked you to WORK for your paycheck (insert shock and awe!)? What? Remember before you were getting paid to do nothing and/or undesirable behaviors. So you refuse and continue doing the status quo (hey it has worked in the past). They hold out to see if you will work but you don’t (insert war of the wills here) and you are just so cute they decide to pay you anyway. Maybe the next time they ask you to stop doing something they find really annoying but you’ve been allowed to do it in the past with little to no consequence. They try to get you to stop but you don’t and you still get your paycheck. What is your motivation to work or behave appropriately? Not much!

So think about this…next time your dog comes up to you, before you reach out and touch him, speak kindly or look lovingly at him ask him to do something. It can be as simple as a “shake”, a “sit” or a “down”. Next time you play ball with him make him sit before you throw the ball (ball is the reward for the sit). You get the point. Two things are happening here he is working for a reward and reinforcing good behaviors you can use elsewhere. Implementing a Nothing In Life Is Free program with your dog can be life changing! You can expect to notice drastic and subtle differences in their behavior as well as increased respect and response to your commands. If you would like the complete Nothing In Life Is Free program email me at terie@gooddogcoaching.com and I will be happy to send it to you. If you feel you need professional help implementing the program, we are here for you! Just call us at 404-422-9832 Terie Hansen Owner at Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care May be reached at 404-422-9832 info@gooddogcoaching.com www.gooddogcoaching.com

Such is the life of many dogs. They are often confused and/or have learned that not doing what is asked of them or even exhibiting unwanted behaviors often still gets rewarded. Does your dog demand your attention by barking, bringing toys to you to play with? Scratching at the door, nudging your hand, putting his foot on your leg or worse climbing on top of you? Does your dog get treats for nothing in particular? Does your dog get on your furniture whenever he feels like it? Does your dog jump on you when you come home? Does your dog pull you down the street on leash? What categorizes a reward? Dog treats of course but also, their food, positive eye contact, your touch, a toy, play time, going to the park/dog park, following your dog while it is pulling on a walk, even a kind word. Think about this…His rewards are your resources of power. Think of them as currency-a paycheck! You control his currency. In real life you would not work for free and even though it makes US feel good to treat our dogs for doing nothing and even undesirable behaviors (albeit many times unknowingly) our dogs are really at their happiest when they are working(or being mentally challenged) in order to receive their rewards. It fulfills a need they have to learn and be active. The word “work” and the phrase “being treated like a dog” have bad connotations in our society but in the dog’s world “working for something” and “being treated like a dog” are positive things. Our dog’s lives are completely controlled by us and what we feel like doing with them. Unfortunately most people don’t feel like doing the one thing a dog desperately needs…A daily walk (insert pet sitter/dog walker here)!

Our Town is delivered directly Greetings! Spring is here and it’s time to start cooking with fresh seasonal produce and . . . fresh herbs. This is the time of year where most of us are trying to undo all of the damage that poor eating habits and lack of exercise during the winter months has caused our bodies. So here come the flat tasteless low-fat ‘diet’ foods. Right? Wrong! Cooking with fresh herbs adds depth and flavor to your cooking that dried herbs and spices don’t. By adding fresh herbs to your dishes you won’t miss the fat and salt that often mask the true flavors of food. This month’s Your Resident Gourmet column is all about inspiring you to incorporate fresh herbs into your everyday cooking. So don’t be shy-try a new herb once a week to add a new twist to a family favorite. To get you started, YRG has included some cooking ideas, storage tips, and a recipe for a Fresh Basil Martini-a twist on the old standard. Happy Cooking! -Chef Jennifer Herb Tips & Ideas: • Dried herbs are more potent than fresh herbs. So don’t be afraid to use large amounts of fresh herbs. • Make a BBQ brush with fresh herbs. Bunch rosemary and thyme and dip in oil or sauce and brush meats, fish or vegetables while grilling. • Make herbal butters with soften butter and fresh chopped herbs. • Add basil or mint leaves to plain water for a refreshing drink. • Make your own infused oil, vinegar and alcohol. • Add fresh herbs to salads. • Mix fresh herbs into cocktails for added flavor. • Handling and Storage: • Avoid handling herbs as much as possible. Basil, oregano, and marjoram are especially sensitive and will turn black from excessive handling. • Do not wash herbs until just before using. • Ethylene will cause the herbs to turn black. Do not store herbs near products with ethylene such as bananas, tomatoes, avocadoes, or any other ripening fruits. • Always rip or tear herbs for usage with your hands. • Herbs like those from the grocery store will keep best in a Ziploc bag wrapped in a damp paper towel. • Wrap basil & oregano in paper towel and keep in the door of the refrigerator where it is warmer. • Herbs bought from the farmers market should be stored at room temperature and used quickly. • Store freshly picked herbs in a glass of water on your kitchen counter • Freezing is a great way to save excess herbs. Although they may lose their color when frozen, they retain their flavor and can be used in salad dressings, soups, sauces and stews. • Drying is another excellent way to preserve the flavor of “woody” herbs like rosemary, thyme, and bay leaves.

Troubleshooting: • Black spots indicate excessive handling, temperatures that are too hot or cold, or excessive exposure to ethylene. • Decay, slime and/or yellowing indicate that the storage temperature is too hot and the herb may be old. • Limpness indicates overexposure to air, heat, or temperature shock.
