Do you have Crohn’s Disease, Acid Reflux, or IBS? Please join us for this One Night Only Celebration

Read about Blair’s experience afterOne just one month on Functional Medicine. Please join us for this Night Only Celebration with over with over $3,000 D’oeuvres.

$3,000 in Give-aways, Cocktails, and Hors D’oeuvres. in Give-aways, Hors As early as I can remember, ICocktails, have never felt thatand my body was at peace. Frequent illness, fatigue, and pain determined my days. I ate fairly healthy, worked out regularly and was involved in physically demanding sports and activities. I was doing everything in my power to be healthy and happy. After years of consulting with numerous doctors, nutritionists, and specialists, I still did not have answers for my systems’ malfunctioning. I settled with the idea that this was just how life would be for me. Eventually the constant pains became unbearable and I was having frequent stomach and digestive issues. I saw a whole new group of doctors and specialists and underwent exhausting diagnostic testing for almost two years. At the age of 22, I was finally diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, Pernicious Anemia, and Acid Reflux. I felt relieved to have answers, but I did not feel like I had any real solutions. The doctors briefly met with me about their findings, gave me multiple prescriptions, and then sent me on my way. My symptoms were somewhat controlled by the various medications, but each prescription had side effects and I did not want to spend the rest of my life taking countless medications. Early 2012, I saw Dr.Gravante for my first chiropractic appointment. My father had been a chiropractic patient of hers for years and heard about her Functional Medicine Program. He thought that it was a perfect fit for me and strongly suggested that I discuss my options with the doctor. Dr.Gravante was as sweet, charismatic, caring, and empathetic as my father had described. I immediately felt at ease with her. We briefly discussed my health issues and promptly set up a Functional Medicine appointment. The initial testing was not invasive and the doctor was able to use my medical records to get an even better outline of my condition. The detailed findings were disturbing but not surprising: I was not getting what I needed and my body was wreaking havoc in response. We discussed a plan to heal my metabolism and my specific problems in detail. I felt confident and excited to begin healing my overly-stressed body. After the first few days on the Program, I was no longer needing to take my Acid Reflux medication and I was also able to discontinue use of my Crohn’s prescription . I was far away from “normal” but the constant pain is beginning to subside and my energy level is increasing. The natural foods that I consume on the diet agreed with my system and after eliminating many harmful foods and additives from my diet, I have not had severe bloating or swelling either. Day by day I feel that I am making progress with my health, whereas before I felt like I was just fighting to survive each day. I have a long journey ahead of me, but I am confident that with my commitment and Dr.Gravante’s amazing support, we will be

ABOUT THE COVER The roles of a twenty-first century mother are endless – nurse, cook, maid, laundress, seamstress, CEO of Domestic Operations and, often, a job that actually offers a paycheck. Add to that a satisfying social life and a blissful romantic relationship, and it begins to feel like walking a tight-rope while carrying an assortment of china plates and saucers. There is something within a woman that drives her to accomplish more than she ever thought possible. Whether it’s a lifelong dream, love for her children, or a drive to change the world, a catalyst always exists to push her further and further until she reaches her goal. Often, the strength of a woman lies in her ability to multitask and care deeply for those around her. A shining example of this innate ability is Alisa Boykin, a Cayce South Carolina transplant who made her way to Gwinnett County seven years ago with her family. In between raising her seven children – ages 12, 10, 9, 8, 4, 3, and 1 – she runs a performing arts school in downtown Snellville called Time2Inspire. The school currently operates as an after-school program, but Alisa has plans to transform it into a full academic school by the fall of 2012. It will start with the early grades (pre-Kindergarten - 1st) and progress yearly until it includes all grades. “It is ironic that Georgia would be my destination,” Alisa said, “as I reflect on coming to Georgia every summer to stay with my Uncle Hank Thomas and Aunt Yvonne. They introduced me to the entrepreneur spirit as I worked for them at their McDonald’s on Forsyth St.” Her aunt and uncle own multiple restaurants and a number of hotels in the Atlanta area. Their influence and encouragement in her life helped her become the woman she is today.

She started her first business when she years old.

was nineteen

Time2Inspire Performing Arts School, a branch of the Boykin’s Educational Arts Program of America (EAP America), was born out of her passion to instill a love of the arts into the hearts of young students. It has been her dream to own a performing arts school since she was thirteen years old. Every nook and cranny of the school has an artist’s flair, from the silhouettes of dancers painted on the walls of the waiting room to the cherry-red folding chairs. She is inspired by all things beautiful. Breathtaking architecture, beautiful landscapes and fashion stir a lot of creativity within her. “I’m inspired by the classic arts,” she said, “and really draw from that. My goal is working with a new generation of children and exposing them to the classics.” Alisa is truly a Renaissance woman. She can dance, model, write musicals, sing, teach, cook and run a successful business. Her typical day involves waking up at 8 a.m. and catching up on the massive amount of paperwork and other administrative tasks that running a nonprofit involves – taxes, student forms, grants

Cover article continued from Page 5 (Meet Alicia Boykin) and business meetings. Her two youngest children are still at home, and her eight-year-old daughter is homeschooled this year. “I love my big family,” she said. “It’s such a learning experience having seven children. You learn from your children, what they like, and what their point of view is. They are growing up in the business and developing an eye and a taste for the arts. It’s inspiring.” After lunch with her family, things really get busy. She and her husband, Lonnie, head over to Time2Inspire – located at 2400 Wisteria Drive in Snellville – to begin their after-school programming for 35-40 kids each day. Over the summer, she averages between 80-120 children who participate in the summer camps. Alisa and Lonnie spend the afternoon helping the children with their homework and providing for their needs until their parents pick them up around 6 p.m. Enrichment classes, which include introductory classes in the performing arts, are offered to all the students. “This way,” Alisa said, “they are all exposed to the arts.” They have the option of taking one-on-one classes later in the evening, which includes acting, hip-hop, contemporary jazz, ballet, tap, modeling, piano, vocals and guitar. Everyone in the community is invited to sign up for classes as well. Alisa lives with her family in Snellville, and attends Worldchangers Church International. The Boykin’s faith is vital to them and is something that has guided their entire lives. In fact, Alisa and Lonnie met while Alisa was a youth minister. Lonnie was drawn to her passion for ministry, a passion that he shared. They were married in 1999. Their lives are intertwined, and Alisa attributes much of her success to him.

FITNESS Who Says It Isn’t Easy Being Green? There are many ways for the fitness minded to value the Earth and its resources. Here are three ways to get be Fit and Green at the same time! Support Organic Farming Organic foods are not just good for our body, they are also good for the environment. They are grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers and crops are often rotated so the soil is not depleted of nutrients. Not only is the integrity of the soil maintained, the air and water are kept clean as well. When we support farmers by purchasing organic foods, we are demonstrating how much we value the health and wellness of our current community as well as generations to come. Recycle water bottles or use non-disposable bottles Consider the amount of water bottles found in any local gym. Now consider the facts about water bottles: Americans buy an estimated 29.8 billion plastic water bottles every year. Nearly eight out of every 10 bottles will end up in a landfill. It is estimated that the production of plastics accounts for 4 percent of the energy consumption in the U.S. Less than 1 percent of all plastics is recycled. Therefore, almost all plastics are incinerated or end up in a landfill. Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60-watt light bulb for up to six hours. Producing new plastic products from recycled materials uses two-thirds less energy than required to make products from raw (virgin) materials. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Park and walk! Atlanta is a commuter city. It is difficult for most to imagine walking to work. However, many suburban areas are putting up sidewalks for walkers making the trip to the grocery store possible on foot. Even local schools are getting in on the trend. Several local schools have an annual ‘walking school bus’ to encourage parents to walk their children to school. Aside from the benefit of extra exercise, using our cars less reduces harmful auto emissions; a significant cause of air pollution. When it comes to saving our environment, small changes can make a big impact!

FINANCE

Shrink Bill: Vol. 2 (or Staying Clean) By Glenton Ashby

The saga continues… Making their new financial discipline work required buy in and commitment to the program from both Bill and his wife. That’s the only way they could go forward and make it successful. It was tricky at times during the month to deal with low balances in the checking account and resist taking the easy way out and using a credit card. Of course, their transition is ongoing so it’s not always possible to forego using a credit card. Not all the month’s income comes at the beginning of the month so it was necessary to manage bill paying and other expenditures properly in order to match cash flow. However, Bill and his wife found it kind of liberating (and a welcome relief) to get credit card statements with zero due or a very low amount due. There would be no more charging a bunch of things one month, then not having any idea what amount due they would find when the bill was opened the next month. When something unexpected came up it was nice to assess the situation and know the large bill should be manageable. Income, and savings if necessary, should prevent having to tap the credit line that is in the process of being paid down. Challenges remain: The challenge of tracking spending in various areas in order to both manage spending and build a working budget grounded in reality. The challenge of disciplined saving. The challenge of making regular contributions to the annual expenses fund so they don’t find themselves in a bind months down the road when some large bill comes due. The challenge of managing spending over the course of the month so cash is available through the whole month. Deferring spending when necessary in order to maintain their objectives is sometimes necessary. The goals: Celebrate the small victories. Maintain these good habits. Get a good savings routine going besides the emergency fund. Feedback and topic suggestions are welcome – email HalcyonTimes@HalcyonFP.com, or comment at www.HalcyonFP.com/halcyon-times. SKIN CARE

The Aging “Baby” Boomers A

s youths, Baby Boomers vowed to stay young forever. And while they couldn’t control the calendar, many have, indeed, stymied the aging process. As a professional in the aesthetic industry for over a decade, I’ve watched this natural progression among Boomers and have been impressed by many who are maintaining their health and appearance. The typical 60-year-old woman is now easily mistaken for someone five to 10 years younger: styles are friendlier for older women, and hair products have come a long way in relieving dry, brittle, graying hair. At the same time, many people don’t realize how easy it is to maintain a youthful face. As owner of About Face Skin Care, I often consult with women, who take care of themselves in every way, but believe there is little they can do for their aging face and neck, short of surgery. Even women who have “tried everything” are surprised at the simple treatments and medical-grade products that can easily and quickly restore a natural and youthful look. The entertainment industry has warped the way society views cosmetic procedures. The term, “chemical peel” brings to mind the parody of the red-faced woman who has been burned. Filler injections make us think of Goldie Hawn in “The First Wives Club,” or tabloids of celebrities who have had too much filler and now look distorted. Others fear Botox giving an expressionless face. The interesting thing is that if you see a woman who is approaching 60, and has a nice, healthy complexion or has no

Page 10

“bulldog jowls” or frown lines, she is either genetically blessed or – more likely -- has a secret she’s not sharing. Anti-aging treatments are as common among the “everyday woman” as coloring hair or waxing brows. When a client approaches About Face for a consultation, he or she is guided through a complete analysis to determine the best and safest method of treatment. This is our point of difference from a regular spa: my medical background gives me the ability to factor any health concerns into the treatment plan. About Face is also overseen by a medical director. Our medical certification also enables us to offer medical-grade products and services that a regular spa can’t match – offering more effective treatments. For example, if a client has a history of hypertension and has taken a diuretic for an extended period of time, the skin may need extra attention to hydration. Some medications and supplements may cause sensitivities that a client may not be aware of. A seizure history would demand that one patient forego certain treatments, while a cardiac history may result in avoidance of another. We are always happy to discuss options with clients and their physicians, if necessary, and, in fact, have worked with many women throughout their breast cancer treatment and recovery. From the consultation, the staff and client will develop a customized plan so that all medical issues are considered. If a maintenance plan is required, it will be thoroughly discussed to eliminate unknown variables. This leaves clients with realistic

expectations and leaves About Face with extremely satisfied clients! Chrissy Thomas, RN, BSN www.aboutfaceskin.com 770-935-FACE See our ad on page 19 (back inside cover)

EDUCATION Corner Test Taking Strategies The end of the school year is fast approaching, which means students will take many tests before their final semester grades are determined. Some of these will be objective tests, of which there are various types: Matching, Fill-in-the-Blank, True/False, and Multiple Choice. Objective tests require students to recall specific factual information such as definitions, dates, people, places, and events. When taking any type of objective test, follow these general rules: * Determine how many questions there are and how much time is allowed * Estimate how much time to spend on each question.

Go back later to the more difficult ones. * Unless there is a penalty for wrong answers, make an educated guess since partial credit may be given.* If taking a scantron test, be sure to bubble correctly. Following are additional strategies for taking each type of objective test. Matching Tests *Count the choices in each column. If one column has more choices than the other, work the column with fewer choices first. * If both columns have the same number, first work the column with the explanations because they may contain clues. * When choosing an answer, cross it out to avoid having to read the choice again. Fill-in-the Blank Tests *Read the first statement. If you know the missing information that will make the statement true, write the answer in the blank provided. * If unsure of the answer, skip the statement and go to the next one. Sometimes the answer needed will be contained in other statements. * After completing all the statements possible, go back to the statements left blank and look for key words. This can help jar your memory to recall facts from class notes or the textbook.

WELLNESS

The Quiet Mind I had just finished teaching an hour-long flowing Yoga class and brought all of the students down to rest on their backs with their legs and arms outstretched and their eyes closed. I could see the easy rise and fall of their chests and abdomens as they breathed slowly in and out. “Focus on your breath,” I guided softly. “Feel the air enter easily through the nose as the chest rises and the shoulders lift.” After a few seconds, I followed that command with, “Allow the air to escape gently through your nose and let your body melt into the floor. Let all the tension and stress melt away.” Svasana is the Sanskrit word for this last resting pose and the accompanying relaxation that goes along with it. It’s a total release of the body and mind. Typically, Yoga students’ thoughts tend to slow down at this point and svasana becomes a meditative period. It is so relaxing and peaceful, it’s not unusual for one or two students to fall asleep during this stage in the class. On this particular day, however, I had a student come up to me after class and whisper in a frustrated voice, “I can’t seem to stop thinking about things when we’re supposed to be resting at the end. I get so frustrated, and I can’t stop moving. Is something wrong with me? Why can’t I stop thinking?” Our fast-paced lives filled with smart phones, laptops, social media, to-do lists, and real-life responsibilities make it almost impossible to mentally slow down… almost. The constant movement of our minds makes it difficult to focus, remember and handle tasks well. This constant mental activity can create stress and tension, which may have an impact on our physical bodies. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are two physical side affects from stress. Tension can create migraine headaches and painfully tight shoulder and neck muscles.

mental activity. Just because you sit down to the piano for one lesson doesn’t mean you’re going to play like Mozart or Beethoven that afternoon. At the end of your first swim lesson, you probably won’t be crawling and backstroking like an Olympian, either. Meditation is no different. It takes patient learning of the principles and repetitive practice to truly be able to slow your thoughts and relax the mind. There are many different styles of meditation, and one is not better than other. However, there are certain commonalities among them: Meditation (or mental relaxation) should be done during a time when you will not be interrupted. Phones should be turned off and you should not be in a position for someone to call upon you. The area should be quiet. No television, radio or loud noises should be in the immediate area. You can enjoy soothing music or nature sounds softly in the background, but a completely quiet environment works as well. You should be sitting comfortably with your head above your heart and your heart above your hips. Sitting in a straight back chair or on the floor with your back against a wall is a good option for beginners. Make sure your feet, knees, legs and back are comfortable – if you’re uncomfortable at any point, it will be difficult to relax and let go. Focus on your breathing – the constant in and out can be relaxing. Hear it, feel it, recognize it. Having something to focus on keeps mental wandering in check. Start slow and work your way up. Begin with 5 minutes a few times a week and slowly increase the time and frequency. If you stick with it, it will be easy to zone out for 20-40 minutes and stay awake, but not be thinking about everything from paying a bill to making a phone call. Practice and be patient… the rewards of meditation will be well worth the time and effort.

Meditation is an inexpensive technique to reduce stress and tension that can be done anywhere at any time. But, it’s a process that has to be learned just like any other physical or

Health and you

It’s all connected Do you sometimes feel as though all you do is work?! You’re not alone. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Americans work more hours than any other industrialized country in the world! We work more hours than the English, French, Germans, and yes, even the Japanese. All the while, we rarely pay attention to our posture, body mechanics, or to the tension build up in our bodies. Is it really a mystery why we don’t feel well and are always so fatigued? I treat clients every week at the Body of Health clinic who suffer with these type conditions. Usually, the pain that ultimately motivates our clients to seek treatment, stems from the chronic overuse of their neck, shoulder, and arm muscles. What about you? Have you ever experienced numbing in your hands and fingers? Have you ever been diagnosed with carpal tunnel or Thoracic Outlet Syndrome? Guess what? These conditions are connected! If you work long hours on a computer, routinely drive for hours on end, lift heavy items on a regular basis, or do repetitive motions with your hands such as style hair or paint houses, you are far more susceptible to these type injuries than others who enjoy varied work routines. Treatment for this type of debilitating pain involves neuromuscular release and deep tissue massage on a regular basis. I am not telling you this to get your business. I’m telling you this because I see it work every day! People who have been told that they need surgery have been able to avoid it by being proactive. They stretch, hydrate, improve their diet, and get

Our Town Magazine

regular body work to free up those impinged nerves which results in pain relief. It’s not rocket science! The first thing I tell my clients is to hydrate. Water is the hydraulics of the back and will act as a cushion on the spine. Secondly, stretch on a daily basis. This relieves the tension around the vertebrae by stretching the tight muscles. I am a firm believer in the Pilates foam roller. It helps with a passive stretch which uses gravity to stretch the muscles and gently open the spine. Thirdly, I recommend regular massage and chiropractic adjustments. Most likely, if you are suffering from persistent back soreness, the vertebrae are out of alignment due to muscle strain. The whole idea of therapeutic massage is to relieve impinged nerves and reduce the pain caused by the degenerated discs between the vertebrae. The best way to accomplish this is to spread the muscles and work out the tension. Massage therapy cannot reverse the disc problem, but it can relieve the pressure on the affected nerves. It is important for you to be a part of the healing process. Increase your water intake, cut out fried and processed foods, stretch, and rest. I realize I seem to be repeating myself with the solution to the pain, but all I can say it that it works! Too many times we let life take control of us instead of us taking control of our lives. Set your alarm on your computer or phone to go off every 2-3 hours. Check in with your body and ask yourself if you have stretched, eaten, gone to the rest

room, or maybe checked in with your family? Take the time to take care of yourself now so that you can avoid irreversible damage in the future.

Counselor’s Corner Play is Good for Your Soul

By Susan Cadley

“Playfulness is absolutely necessary for your health and well-being - it’s as important as the food you eat and the thoughts you think.” Denise Linn Do you remember the anticipation you had as a child when the school year was ending and you’d be free for the summer? I don’t know about you, but I could hardly wait for the bell to ring on the last day of school. We all ran out the door with glee, not sure what was ahead, but we knew it wasn’t about sitting still! It was time to play, let loose, take a brain break. The element of play can get lost in our adult world if we allow it. The serious part of you may have a million reasons not to play, but play has some serious benefits. These benefits have been studied and documented by Stuart Brown, M.D., a psychiatrist. In his book, Play, co-authored with Christopher Vaughn, he writes that play is not only practice for survival but a comfort to the soul. Here are some positive side effects of play; * Stress reduction * Increased creativity and problem solving * Exercise for health * Moving energy of supressed emotions * Induces happiness How can you carve out playtime in your schedule; in your day and week ahead? Keep that date with yourself and stay committed. What I’ve experienced when I create play time for myself is that I’m happier, I laugh more, and I don’t mind any of the things deemed as work in my life. This is

Page 14

because I’m satisfying my playing gene. If you find play difficult, ask yourself a few questions and allow your soul to answer; 1. What is your belief about people who play? 2. If you play, what do you believe will happen, positive or negative? 3. What belief keeps you from playing? (Hint: it’s all about your beliefs, which can be challenged) You have the play gene in your DNA too. So how will you play? Here are some ideas to get you warmed up; * Dance * Skip * Sing loud in the car or anywhere! * Paint * Sit on a swing * Write a silly poem * Watch comedy Sprinkle some fun into your life and feel your soul soar! PET OF THE MONTH

Fleas and more fleas Why does my dog still have fleas even though I applied a topical medication this month? Response by Dr. Amanda Irish

Fleas are a very common problem in Georgia and can cause severe skin reactions and discomfort to our pets. It is very important to consult with your veterinarian about the best combination of products for your pet’s lifestyle. The best forms of flea prevention target different stages of the flea life cycle to gain good environmental control. There are several factors that play a role in treatment failure. Most importantly, no oral or topical medication can work efficaciously if the environment is contaminated with fleas already. The fleas seen on your pet only represent 5% of the population in your pet’s environment. The additional 95 % of fleas are breeding in your yard and household. Therefore, you must treat the whole environment and the pet to get control of the problem. Fleas are a year round problem in the south and require year round prevention to control. You have to be consistent with your prevention methods to prevent fleas from reproducing in your environment. It is more effective to prevent fleas using your products monthly rather then treating them once you have an infestation. Always be sure to follow your products labeled instructions and apply topical medications correctly. Some topical products need to be applied directly to the skin and should not be exposed to water for 24 to 48 hours and certain oral preventatives need to be given with food to work most effectively.

Pepper is almost 7 and has been the most loved pet in our home. She is a Beagle/Poodle and so is a smart shedder. She has been raised on the lap and that’s where she likes to stay. She’s only happy when completely covered in the afghan. She will play fetch but after about 4 runs will keep the ball and not return. Our family would not be complete without her. -diane
