On the Cover: Gentle Touch Dentistry: Dental-Health-Care By Stacye Carroll One could say Meghan Coradin cut her teeth on the field of dentistry. Following in the footsteps of her mother who worked for over twenty years as a dental assistant, Meghan began working the front desk when she was fourteen. Following a brief stint in a corporate environment, Meghan accepted the position of Practice Director at Gentle Touch Dentistry in Lilburn three years ago. “I prefer working in a private practice where you really get to know people; you get to see their ins and outs,” she says. “I enjoy sitting with the patients, discussing their priorities, and helping them achieve their treatment goals.” A visit with Meghan is part of the comprehensive treatment planning done at Gentle Touch Dentistry following a new patient’s first appointment. Treatment options, fees, and payment arrangements are discussed in detail, allowing the patient to make informed decisions about care. Appointment schedules are flexible, and patients can usually get in right away. Gentle Touch Dentistry keeps the focus on dental health through education and preventative care. According to Meghan, “We’d much rather be able to schedule someone to come in every six months for a cleaning than every three months for treatment.” Exams are thorough, and all patients over the age of eighteen are encouraged to take advantage of the new VELscope assessment for oral cancer. “Using the VELscope makes it possible for the dentist to see problems early, which means more conservative treatment,” says Meghan.
Getting a crown used to be a two week process. Now thanks to the new CEREC dental restoration system used at Gentle Touch Dentistry, crowns are made in the office and are permanently set on the same day. The initial digital impression improves comfort, and a ceramic crown provides strength, durability, and a pleasing, natural appearance. If your teeth and gums are healthy, and you want that extra-white “Hollywood” smile, you are the perfect candidate for Lumineers veneers. Lumineers involve no drilling, injections, or pain, and Gentle Touch Dentistry offers initial consultations free of charge. Dr. Fred Angeletti has been with Gentle Touch Dentistry for over thirty of the forty years he’s been in practice. Many of his new patients are the children of patients he has cared for since they were kids themselves. Dr. Angeletti is passionate about animals and has two dogs, Buddy and Buster. He is also an avid motorcyclist. Dr. Lida Cristina Paez joined Dr. Angeletti at Gentle Touch Dentistry a year ago on the recommendation of a trusted colleague. While a student pursuing a dental assistant certification, she was awarded Most Outstanding Student in three different areas of study. She later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Georgia Southern University and attended graduate school at the College of Dental Medicine of Georgia Regents
University in Augusta. Originally from Venezuela, Dr. Paez now resides in Buckhead with her dog, Bella. When she isn’t pursuing her passion for oral surgery, Dr. Paez enjoys kickball, volleyball, spending time with family, and traveling. The addition of a Spanish-speaking practitioner enables Gentle Touch Dentistry to provide better care to more patients. “Patients love her,” adds Meghan. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Paez, or to access any of the services offered by Gentle Touch Dentistry, call 770-921-8442. Meghan Coradin is Practice Director at Gentle Touch Dentistry. One Man’s Opinion
Community Business Spotlight with: Funnybones Owner Kenya Newman By Heidi Campbell Thirteen years ago dog lover Kenya Newman had a dream. This sports marketing professional, with an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Advertising, and an MBA in Finance, took out a mortgage on her house, and ran up thousands of dollars in credit card debt in 2004 to see this dream, Funnybones for Dogs, become a reality. Two years later, Newman convinced her father to quit his job in telecommunications and join her full time. “It is a real treat to get to share my dream with my dad,” Newman shares. “No one has your back like family, and when I am not at Funnybones, it feels good to know it is in my Dad’s hands. He loves the business as much as I do.” Newman fell in love with the doggie day care concept when she began dropping her Weimaraner puppy off at such a facility in Portland, Oregon. She was feeling out of sorts with her career, and weary of the competitive edge necessary to maintain her corporate position. “Play with dogs all day in an off-leash environment and take my dog to work with me every day? Yes, please!” she decided. “I remember the day I called my dad back east,” recalls Newman. “I was sitting at my desk at work and I told him I wanted to quit my job, rent my house, and move into the room above their garage while I worked to open a dog daycare. I fully expected him to ‘talk some sense into me’ and remind me about my mortgage, my commitment to my employer, my thouContinued on page 15

Nearly everything we read, see, listen to, and watch is tied to media sensationalism. We hear of prison escapes, shark attacks, shootings, health epidemics and many other tensions. Media are programmed to “shock us” into listening. They talk about robbery, murders, assaults, scandals, lawsuits, fraud, arson, and more. Why do we seldom hear about a neighbor helping a stranger change a flat tire on the side of the road, of people helping feed the hungry right here in our community, of community members who have rescued countless animals that have been left for dead, or about the local law and emergency heroes who risk their lives for us each day? Instead of hearing about a teacher who works on her own time to help a student pass a course, we hear of a handful of educators who have messed up. Where are the stories about the great parks and schools in the neighborhood, or about the fact that homes are selling again and more small businesses have started? We hear about various political parties who seemingly argue about everything, when most people I hear from simply want a better life for themselves as well as for their children and grandchildren. People are sick of the negative and sensationalistic news, so let’s give that a rest. The people I meet and know love being a part of this community. Many have amazing stories to share of what they are doing to make our community and world a better place. This is what Our Town is all about. We never focus (and never will) on the negative stories that serve no purpose but to upset others. Does this mean our community is perfect? Of course not. There is no such thing on this earth. However, in all my travels across the United States, I can find few places that have a greater sense of community than we do right here. You should be proud of that. I am. We are defying what the news media says is possible in 2015. Why? From my vantage point, this community does not see “age, disability, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or skin color.” We see flesh and blood. We see people trying to live a peaceful life and trying to make a difference in this world. We see families who love each other and friends who care for one another. We see people who want to be heard and understood, not judged and yelled at. We see neighbors we care about. You see, this community consists of people of character. This is what I love about it. So, in this man’s opinion, I am thankful for this community and our strong families. We may have our differences, but we look out for one another. Quite frankly, I see a lot more of what we have in common than what we do not. Where we work, live, and play is special. I hope you are as proud as I am. Thanks for allowing us to continue sharing the story or your town, my town, OUR TOWN.

Why make a will? You can plan who gets your property at your death. Without a will or other estate plan, state law will say how your property will be divided. In Georgia the spouse and children will divide it equally, except a spouse cannot receive less than a third. If you have no spouse or children, your parents inherit. If they are deceased, your siblings would divide your property. If you have no siblings, your next of kin would inherit. What are basic legal requirements of a will? A will must be written by one who is of sound mind at the time of the writing, and then witnessed by two persons. What is probate? The will is filed and established as the genuine, most recent will. All heirs must be notified and given the opportunity to object. If there are no objections, probate can be accomplished in a few days. Do I have to locate witnesses to probate the will? You do not have to locate witnesses if the will includes a self-proving affidavit, which can be done at the time the will is signed. How can a will be amended? A will can only be amended in writing, and witnessed as an original will. Making changes by hand without witnesses can void the will. What other actions can void a will? The birth or adoption of a child, a marriage, or a divorce can void a will. However, wills can be drafted to plan for these events. Are there alternatives to wills? One alternative is a revocable trust. Assets are transferred to the trust. The trust names beneficiaries, so after the death, the property in the trust goes to the beneficiaries without having to probate a will. What problems can a poorly-drafted will have? Even if otherwise valid, a will that does not excuse the executor from filing an inventory of the estate or purchasing a bond can create headaches. A competent attorney can makes sure all these matters are covered. David Walker is owner of Walker Law Firm. More information at www.walker-lawfirm.com

Travel Tales: A Canadian Cruise By Pam Walker I am not a cruiser. Hiking vacations or horseback riding trips are more my style. When I won a cruise for seven nights, I tried to give it away to someone who might appreciate it more. After all, I am trying to lose weight and be healthier. All I could think about was “all that food!” However, I was told that my “gift” was non-transferable. These huge cruise lines go everywhere in the world. Where could I go? Alaska? No, done that! South America? No. I am there a couple times each year. Europe? I’m there at least once per year. The Caribbean: Eastern or Western? I don’t think so. Even the Orient was out of the question as I had just returned from Asia. I have always been fascinated by the beautiful scenery off the coast of Canada and New England, and in June, the Eastern Right Whales move south from their northern haunts. So I opted for a cruise up the St. Lawrence Seaway from Quebec, and then down to Boston. “Active” shore excursions on this trip are mostly bus trips and then a one mile walk. Alongside these excursion offerings, there were cartoons of three little hikers to indicate this one was strenuous! A one hour hike strenuous? There are bike rentals in Nova Scotia or you can ride around Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Most of the shore excursions are bus Continued on page 21

Learning Lessons: Appreciating and Supporting TEACHERS By Carol C. Wood As the new school year begins, it is a good time to recognize those who have dedicated and committed themselves to the education of students. Whether one teaches 4-year-olds in a Pre-Kindergarten program, or adults who are furthering their education, the common component for educators is their passion for people. When asked what I do as a career, I often respond, “I am in the ‘people building’ business!” Most teachers I know feel the same way. It is difficult to understand why some feel compelled to teach, but they do. It’s as if God “taps” certain people for this life role. What are some of the characteristics of a teacher? T Trustworthy, Tenacious, Thought provoking E Expert, Enthusiastic, Entertaining, Energetic A Approachable, Appreciative, Attentive C Caring, Challenging, Constructive, Creative, Comforting, Communicative H Honest, Hard-working, Humorous E Engaging, Empathetic, Encouraging R Role model, Rebuilder, Responsible, Respectful, Receptive Establishing a Positive Teaching Relationship Following are a few reminders to establish a positive working relationship with teachers during the next school year: u Provide teachers with information about your child that will help them know him or her as an individual. u Volunteer your time and energy to the classroom and school when needed. u Demonstrate respect for each teacher’s expertise and experience with subject matter and student behavior management in the classroom. u Send a note of thanks and appreciation to teachers when things are going well in the classroom. u Be on each teacher’s “team” by supporting his or her instruction, classroom policies, and procedures and expectations for your child. u If you disagree with a teacher on any matter, never voice this in front of your child. Doing so may cause your student to place blame on the teacher rather than accepting personal responsibility for the matter. u When desiring to talk with a teacher, initially contact him or her via email or a written note and briefly describe the nature of your concern(s). Ask for a return phone call and provide your best number and time of day to be reached. If a phone call is not sufficient to handle your concerns, request a brief in-person conference. Emailing concerns can be risky since they do not reflect vocal tone, expression, or mannerisms. u When talking with the teacher via phone or in a conference, begin with questions rather than accusations. Asking questions will allow you to have a better idea of the manner in which classes are conducted and subjects taught. You do not want to put the teacher in a defensive mode, and verbal accusations will likely do this. Teachers are human beings first, and they want and deserve your respect and approval of the work they do with your child each day. So, as the new school year begins, recognize the many special characteristics each teacher brings to the learning environment, and support their efforts with your child. Have a fabulous school year!

Can’t By Jane Bishop, Life Coach/Speaker Certain four letter words were not allowed in my family when I was growing up. Profanity was the main category, and then there was “can’t.” My parents did not tolerate a first response of “I can’t.” When faced with something difficult or new, rather than allow me to defer to a feeling of initial inability, I had to make an attempt. I often heard “can’t never did do anything” as an encouragement to try! Little did I know what a life lesson that prohibited word would teach me. “Can’t” is the negative form of can. It sends a message to our brain that we are incapable of a task, or that we do not have permission. That message triggers negative emotions, and we begin to believe we are incapable and disempowered. Think of a time you voiced, “I can’t.” How did it make you feel? What message were you sending yourself? How much did you buy into it? This also applies to self-talk. The words we use verbally and non-verbally transmit cues to our brain. The impact of saying “I can’t” vs. “I can” can be the difference in the level of self-esteem that impacts self-confidence that impacts effectiveness that…you get the idea. If “can’t” is common in your vocabulary, try word replacement therapy (WRT)! Each time “can’t” shows up, replace it with another word, depending on the situation. “I can’t get into that” may become, “I am not interested in that.” Or, “I can’t do that,” may become, “I will try.” I recall many times in my life when WRT served me well. It is essential for living4ward, and it began for me at home as a child. Life lesson: I don’t know until I try! How about you? Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. Getting Schooled with: Tom Trippany, Principal of Shiloh Elementary School By Stacye Carroll When asked to talk about Shiloh Elementary School, Principal Tom Trippany sounds more like a proud parent than an administrator. The first thing he’ll share is that out of seventy-eight elementary schools in Gwinnett County, Shiloh fifth graders ranked at or near the top in Social Studies, Science, and Math on this year’s county benchmark assessments. And while he doesn’t go so far as to name names, he’s quick to let you know that Shiloh Elementary students scored better than students in clusters traditionally believed to be among the best performing in the state. When asked who or what he credits with his students’ success, Trippany answers without hesitation, “Teachers. Obtaining and retaining the very best teachers is a big part of my job. It’s a huge responsibility. The decision to hire a teacher affects at least twenty-five children, other teachers, and all their families for the rest of their lives.” Trippany doesn’t just rely on what others have to say about a prospective hire. He looks at data collected by the state based on student scores. “If they’re not getting results, we don’t want them,” he says. “Every teacher I’ve hired has the potential to be ‘Teacher of the Year.’” One strategy Trippany put into place is the hiring of math and literacy coaches. These individuals complete a “data dig” where they look at statistics from other successful schools and collaborate with key staff members. Using the workshop model, the coaches then present strategies to teachers, while providing them with everything needed to complete the demonstrated activity in
the classroom. Coaches also work with individual students during the day and as part of Shiloh’s afterschool program. According to Principal Trippany, Shiloh’s PTA is among the best in the district. Thanks to their efforts, the Dairy Association presented the school with a $6,000 Wii system used to enhance physical fitness classes in the gym. The PTA was also responsible for the building of an additional kiosk in the cafeteria, making it easier for the nearly 500 students who eat breakfast at the school to get through the line and on to class. By obtaining a grant from Snapple, the PTA was instrumental in the construction of a $50,000 playground outfitted with a wheelchair ramp to assist special needs children who come to Shiloh from all over the district to attend class. Even though school has been out less than a month, Tom Trippany says he misses daily contact with students already. They, and the stories they tell, are his favorite thing about being principal, which is why he makes it a practice to have lunch with them whenever he can. Despite the fact that his job sometimes requires him to act as disciplinarian, he hopes the students think of him as “someone fun to be around.” Trippany and his wife, Heather, who is also an educator, have 2 children, Justin and Jordan. Currently, his focus is on summer school, an extended school year for special needs students, and Kinder Camp, which gives prospective kindergarteners an idea of what’s in store for them in the coming school year. Tom Trippany is principal at Shiloh Elementary School. More information at http://www.shilohes.org/

Eight Free or “Almost Free” Ways to Locally Entertain Your Kids in the Last Days of Summer By Heidi Campbell As a teacher and mother of three, I have collected many ideas over the years for ways to entertain, motivate, and even educate kids without breaking the proverbial bank. Here are my favorites. THE GREENWAY TRAIL. This trail is my favorite free activity because it is close and shady. Bring a homemade scavenger hunt list with you. My kids loved searching for things like acorns, pine cones, a yellow flower, a piece of bark, a stick longer than six inches, a feather, a rock, and a leaf that was not green. When the kids got older, we used cameras so we could snap photos of bigger things like bat houses, squirrels, rabbits, and birds. This is also a great place to ride bikes, which is another free activity that provides great exercise! PETSMART. This store makes a perfect FREE field trip! Kids love to wander past the vast fish tanks, spy on the mice, watch the birds, and glance at the snakes! Sometimes they even have kittens, cats, and dogs to visit with. You can make a homemade list so the kids can name their “best in show” selections: prettiest fish, cutest mouse, scariest snake, biggest bird, etc. FEED THE DUCKS (Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville is a GREAT park for this). My kids loved to feed the ducks. The only expense would be for a loaf of bread if you don’t have any available. This place is also great for taking excellent photos. WASHINGTON FARMS. Though a little bit of a drive and a little bit of money ($12 gets you a GALLON of berries), this place is a fun activity. The kids really enjoy the challenge of filling up a gallon bucket of strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries. THE LIBRARY. The library is an amazing community resource! When my kids were little, we went once or twice a week, with my kids spending at least an hour locating the perfect books. The library also posts many free activities throughout the summer months. We even once enjoyed a puppet show! If you’ve never been to the library, it is never too late. Any county resident can sign up for a free card, and begin enjoying the benefits. MCDANIEL FARM PARK. This Gwinnett County park in Duluth has been restored to look like a traditional farm from the 1930s. It is complete with a farmhouse, a barn, a blacksmith shed, and so much more. This awesome educational park is FREE! BASS PRO SHOP. This fishing mecca offers some excellent free entertainment. Kids love to see the giant fish tank, and it is fun to have them count the different animals that are found around the store. Older kids might enjoy the free outdoor-related courses that they offer. If you want to make this a “non-free” activity, you can partake in the climbing wall ($3 per climb) or the shooting target practice games. STAY HOME. My kids loved to make the tallest, widest card houses. Dollar Tree sells cards for $1.00, and it is best to have multi-packs. My kids also produced the scariest haunted houses. I would let them use one darkened room, and they would set up a haunted “tour.” We even peeled grapes to make eyeballs. They also built forts from sofa cushions and blankets, created plays and variety shows to perform for family, and made sleeping bag slides down the stairs. We also raced to see who could put together puzzles the fastest, had “wash the dog” parties with the garden hose, and made tasty finger paints with chocolate pudding. So there you go. A few last “free” things to do before Labor Day. Have fun and save some money.

Importance of Reading Food Labels By Julie Mills-Watson, LMT, LLCC What could be more important than knowing what we are putting into our bodies? When we eat, we are feeding our cells, not just filling our bellies. Our bodies have to recognize and process what we put into them. Food additives and preservatives can be harmful over long periods of time, so it is important to take the time to read labels and make the best food choices. According to the Time Use Institute, the average time spent in the grocery store is forty-one minutes. That tells me people are not taking the time to look at what is in their food. If you spent just an extra ten minutes to look at a label, think how much healthier your food cart would be! Food manufacturers are the best marketers on the planet. They use catch phrases like “natural” or “low fat” to make the item seem healthy. Do not be tricked by the front of the packaging. Always look at what the product has in it, not what the marketing tells you. Here are a few simple tips to make the process of scanning labels much easier. Look at the ingredients section, not just the facts table on the side or back of the box. If it has high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, bleached flour, aspartame, MSG (mono sodium glutamate), dyes, or chemicals (things you can’t pronounce or anything with a number), put it back on the shelf. The list of ingredients should be relatively short. If it is lengthy, then it probably has too many fillers and it is not good for you. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. There, you’ll find less processed foods. Familiarize yourself with the healthy food section and try a new item each week. Remember, just because something is “gluten free” does not mean it is healthy. It may very well have dyes and additives that give it texture and flavor. Sugar is in everything. Four grams equals one teaspoon of sugar. Instead of counting calories, count the nutrients in the product. If you begin reading labels and building a diet of whole foods for meals and snacks, you will reap the rewards in short order! Julie Mills is owner of Body of Health and Life. Chaplain’s Corner: The Key to Spiritual Growth Dr. Paul Ballard I have been asked numerous times as a pastor, “Paul, how can I grow in my spiritual life?” Many people respond with a list of spiritual disciplines: Bible reading, prayer, and Christian fellowship. My answer may surprise you. I don’t in any way want to minimize the importance of spiritual discipline, but none of these are the key to spiritual growth. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in Him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Jesus is crystal clear. The key to spiritual growth is abiding in Jesus. What does that mean? Books have been written on this subject, but let me give an illustration from everyday life. If I showed up on my doorstep and offered my wife a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates for our anniversary, and I told her I was giving this to her out of obligation and duty, she would not be happy. Why? She wants me to give her gifts because I love her, not out of duty and obligation. Is God any different? Does God simply want us to check off a box that says you have done a “good” deed today out of duty and obligation? Absolutely not! God desires that you desire Him. Christianity is not primarily an external set of commands and rules that you obey, but a relationship with a loving Heavenly Father. Christianity is not, “I obey; therefore, I am accepted.” It is, “I am accepted; therefore, I obey.” Abiding in Christ is recognizing your deep entrenched sinfulness, and that the grace of God seen in the finished work of Jesus Christ is your only hope. With religion, we obey to get something from God. The gospel of Jesus Christ changes us so that we obey because we love God. For more information about the key to spiritual growth, email me at pballard@ mpfbc.net. More information at www.mpfbc.net

Up Close with: Brenda Bean of Parrot Productions By Rachael Brice Ever wondered what it would be like to have a talking parrot come to your birthday party? Well, Brenda Bean and her traveling group of performing parrots are sure to add a burst of color and excitement to your next event. Bean grew up fascinated by birds, but it wasn’t until the mid-1980s after she purchased her first and favorite bird, a male Eclectus named Cash, when her interest truly began to grow and expand into what it is today. Currently, she has fourteen birds of various types from all over the globe. Over the years, through observation and experimentation, Bean and her friend Tom Gay founded TAME (Training Active Management Eoavis1). Together they opened a store and started a training course in Grand Prairie, Texas, where they sold only tame parrots. When the recession hit in the late 1980s, no one could afford a $1,000.00 pet, and the bird business began to fade. In 1986, after being in business for five years, Bean and Gay packed up and moved to Georgia. Bean started her own company in 2007 and currently works out of her home. Parrot Productions, a traveling bird show, features twelve of Bean’s most beloved and exotic birds. For the last six years, she has been traveling around the state with her birds to showcase their talents at a variety of settings that include birthday parties, summer reading programs in neighborhood libraries, college student seminars, Boy and Girl Scout events, and retirement parties. Of course, her husband Jack helps with the show. He also designs props, and provides moral and financial support wherever and whenever he can to make each show a success. “I decided to start my own company because one day I realized the birds were bored and I couldn’t give them all the necessary love and attention they deserved,” Bean said. “So, I began booking performances at various venues and exhibiting my birds so I could teach and share my passion for them with others.” Bean’s one-hour show features a twenty minute teaching and a forty minute hands-onlearning demonstration. She can perform for small or large audiences, though the larger the audience the less time for each person to hold a bird, or let one perch on his or her arm – but only if the person is brave enough to do so. Bean especially enjoys educating children and adults about her birds, even when she volunteers with Agape Hospice and Autism Speaks. She shares about where each bird comes from, their diets and habitats, and how we can learn from them. “Parrots can show us many things,” Bean said. “They can teach us about grief and how to adapt and change to their surroundings. Parrots will have four long-term owners throughout their lifetime and like to have structure and feel secure. They are like five year old children, always wanting constant love and attention.” Bean said training these birds is an ongoing process, though the ideal age to train a parrot is three months old while they’re still hand feeding at least two times per day. Bean has hand raised most of the birds she uses in her show and personally clips their wings, beaks, and talons to ensure they are show ready when show time comes. “I really enjoy teaching others about my birds and everything they are capable of,” Bean said. “It gives me great pleasure to know my birds and I can brighten someone’s day and educate them about something new.” More information at http://parrotproshows.com/ 1 Eoavis- Latin for hook billed parrot.

By Terie Hansen Dogs, like people, have different and individual personalities. When a family experiences the loss of a dog, the dog left behind will grieve the loss of the passing pack member. Some dogs grieve longer than others, but in general, compared to their human counterparts, their grieving process is less emotional and much shorter. However, if the human puts all his or her emotion into the dog that is left, the grieving process can certainly extend and even create some behavioral problems. Here is how you can help your dog grieve: u Allow the companion dog to be present at the euthanasia. A mobile veterinarian can typically perform an in-home euthanasia, allowing for a peaceful passing and the presence of the other family dog. u Keep your emotions in check as much as possible, though it’s easier said than done! And yes, a little extra TLC goes a long way, but too much can do more harm than good. u Keep up a normal routine. This helps dogs feel safe and secure, and helps to relieve or keep stress to a minimum. u Added exercise will get the dog’s feel-good chemicals (endorphins) flowing, helping them to be in a peaceful, happy state. The same will work for you as well, so get out and walk! u This is a great time to introduce some training as a means of positively stimulating your dog’s brain. Perhaps some agility, nose work, or some good old fashioned basic obedience is in order. Dogs thrive on learning new things. u Remember, time heals, and you and your canine companion will feel happy again one day, maybe even enough to open your heart and your home to another dog in need of a family.

Variety, as they say, is the spice of life. Nowhere is that more accurate than in the sporting world where your options are seemingly endless: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, lacrosse – the list goes on. When it comes to youth athletics, the emphasis on variety is even stronger. If your sport programs aren’t myriad and unique, you lose a lot of potential players and fans right away. Thankfully, people like Matt Norman, president of the Brookwood Athletic Association for Baseball and Softball (BAAB), are savvy enough to provide the Gwinnett community with a safe, fun place for kids to enjoy their chosen sport in whatever fashion they choose. Norman, a Kansas native who has lived in the area for over a decade and raised his three sons here, credits the association with being integral to youth sports in the county. “I believe the recreational programs offered [at BAAB] are some of the finest in Gwinnett…we have a very large registration base every year, so we’re able to serve a multitude of people in the community, both young and old.” Although BAAB’s calling card is baseball and softball, the facilities offer kids the chance to just run around and have fun outside of any athletic endeavor. Norman and the other members of the association’s board of directors work very hard to maintain the facilities, relying heavily upon the kindness and charity of their adult volunteers. “Our volunteers…have an opportunity to give back to the community at large through their time, effort, and commitment to our youth,” he explains. In addition, many of the activities offered are designed to give the children who participate in them something much more crucial to their development than just a fun distraction. “Youth sports provide a significant opportunity for our children to learn important life lessons, through competition and recreation, which help them mature into successful adults,” he says. “BAAB is a subset of the community in which we live,” Norman opines, “and our success depends directly on the community’s involvement and dedication.” As a communal space, the association is vital in terms of bringing people together. Elementary, middle, and high school allegiances are put to the side as families from all over the county find themselves becoming friendly due to new team affiliations. Kids who might not otherwise have the chance to interact with each other forge lasting bonds through their camaraderie on the association’s fields. In that vein, BAAB remains a “fully functional, not-for-profit organization” available to everyone in the area regardless of financial standing. “We truly believe,” Norman explains, “that if a child wants to play baseball, we will find a way to make that happen regardless of financial difficulties or otherwise. We are truly fortunate to be part of an exceedingly generous community.” If you’re looking for a great place to spend your summer, look no further than Bethesda Park and BAAB. Canadian Cruise
Continued from page 9 tours to places like the home of Ann of Green Gables, old Canadian forts, and lighthouses. I was excited about these ports. They are places I had actually never been. But rather than take the bus route, I decided to just go it alone and poke around the towns on my own. The highlight of the trip was Quebec City, with time to practice some Canadian French and to enjoy some typical food like Poutrain (French fries topped with cheese curd and brown gravy) and French Foie Gras. On board there are several “specialty” restaurants, and I paid extra to eat in each one of them. There is also a gym on board and yoga classes to take part in, especially if anyone wants to work out after eating all that good food. These modern ships are like floating cities. Not only do they provide activities, they also have shops and fun places to sip a drink and people watch. With a cruise there is no packing/ unpacking, and no thinking about what to cook for dinner each night. If you enjoy walking around new places and seeing new scenery every day, then a Canadian cruise just might be the adventure for you. Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor.
