On the Cover: Meet Dr. Craig Heigerick: DeKalb Medical Physicians Group/Beaver Ruin Primary Care By Kim Hill Dr. Craig Heigerick has been practicing medicine in the Lilburn area for over thirty years, but has never forgotten a paragraph from a book his mother gave him as he was leaving for college. It went something like this: “If you had a Ferrari, would you put recycled oil in it? Would you buy cheap gas? Would you buy re-tread tires? Probably not. Well, your body is the only Ferrari you’ll ever own.” Dr. Heigerick has taken that advice to heart through the years, being a positive role model to his patients by keeping his “Ferrari” in top running condition. At age 55, he started running triathlons, training fifteen hours a week. People told him he was crazy, and his response was that crazy was a really big advantage because you don’t know what you can really do unless you get a little crazy. Most people would say, “I could never do a triathlon.” Dr. Heigerick says, “But you have no idea, because you’ve never tried.” Dr. Heigerick and his partner, Dr. Daryl Rampersad, make up Beaver Ruin Primary Care, an affiliate of DeKalb Medical Physicians Group. They see patients for coughs, colds, diabetes, hypertension, pneumonia, athletic injuries, dermatology, minor surgery, allergy testing, weight management, and much more. “We do the 80%; specialists do the 20%,” Dr. Heigerick says. The good news for patients who do need a specialist, or a diagnostic test such as an x-ray, MRI, CT scan, or ultrasound, is that the Beaver Ruin Primary Care team can make any needed referrals, and by being affiliated

with DeKalb Medical, can assist patients in getting a quick appointment at the DeKalb Medical facility most convenient for them. “I like to come to work to have fun,” says Dr. Heigerick. “I like to talk to people, to learn things.” A fundamentalist Christian who reads the Bible and attends church conferences, Dr. Heigerick loves to meet people and develop long-term relationships. Many of his patients have been with him for many years. One even remembers his first office from 1983. He sees children of patients he saw as children. “They’re friends,” he says. “If I know them well enough, we talk about their families. If I know them really well, I’ll include them in a joke to play on my staff members.” Dr. Heigerick offers weight management and obesity programs for patients. Promoting the “e” word, Dr. Heigerick says exercising is an anti-depressant that decreases the rates of many types of cancers, is great for keeping blood sugar in check, and “you get all types of nice endorphins.” During the seven years he has run triathlons, he learned a lot about himself and about human behavior. Whether you begin walking, running, riding a bike, or anything else, he suggests choosing the days you are going to exercise, and start by telling yourself, “I don’t have to go exercise; all I have to do is go out my front door and to my neighbor’s driveway, and then I can come back.” It takes the pressure off, and takes the dread out of doing something you don’t want to do. If you go that far, he says that 99% of the time you’ll keep going. The problem is not exercising; the problem is getting off the couch. He

adds that you have to find something that’s fun, something you like. He decided triathlons were no longer fun, and is now pursuing Pickleball, a tennis-like game that is rapidly gaining in popularity around the country. It is played with a wiffle ball and paddle, and the court is about one-fourth the size of a tennis court. “So if your joints are bad, you can still play!” Dr. Heigerick says. He feels growing old is an illusion. Because of the friendships he has made with his patients through the years, Dr. Heigerick says he doesn’t know if he’ll ever 100% retire, but he may sleep later. “There is a lot of socialization, a lot of talking. We do medicine on the side somewhat, but we do a lot of talking,” he says of his practice. “It’s about making relationships and having a good time while you see people. I would hate to come and just diagnose and hand out pills.” More information at www.beaverruinprimarycare.com

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion @RyanSauers

By Ryan T. Sauers

I love people and love our community. This is one of the reasons I enjoy being involved with this magazine. We continue to see little but great division everywhere we look. If you watch traditional news, it is hard to miss information designed to make us anxious, less trusting, mad, frustrated, angry, divided, and scared. If you watch such news (and how can you miss it), you’re shown a world that looks out of control and about to combust. If I did not know better, I would think there weren’t any good, loving, and caring people left in our world. And, I might think everyone has either given up or lost hope, and/or is frustrated beyond repair. But let me tell you something. Yes, we do have a lot that I grieve over. The senseless killings we have seen in recent weeks and months make me sick. Terrorism and no concern for life make me ill as well. Moreover, the “blanket judgement” of people based upon their skin color, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, creed, gender, etc. is something that deeply bothers me. I seek unification not division. I desire peace, love, harmony, laughter and a better world for my children and future grandchildren. A Bible verse speaks to me on this subject. In John 14:27 Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” This Scripture comforts me. You see, Our Town community, we are simply a microcosm of all that is happening around the world. Right here in our own communities we all have our opinions, beliefs, values, and worldview. You know UNTIE (coming undone) and UNITE (coming together) are not that different. Thus, I challenge each of us to focus on what unites us, not divides us. We are all human beings. We are all here for a short time on this earth. We are all made of flesh and blood. There are so many wonderful things going on around the world that are never covered, but that is for another time. In the Our Town community we have amazing people doing incredible things to make our community better. We have super families, great schools, wonderful parks, and people of integrity and character. Our diversity is one we embrace and one that makes us stronger. Let’s continue doing what has made us one of the best communities in this country, and then… stretch some more… to become even better. Let’s love more and criticize less. Let’s work to find common ground with others we may not know or understand. If we start with a couple of things we share in common, then relationships can blossom and great things will happen. Together we can let the Our Town community be the model that other cities talk about and learn from. We need to deeply care about each person we come in contact with. Will you help me to challenge others to think of ways to build our community, to become even better, to refrain from criticism, and to focus on solutions? Remember, every human has emotions: joy, love, anger, frustration, anxiousness. It is what makes us human. Together we can make a difference and build stronger bridges of understanding between one another. I could not be more proud of where I work, play, worship, fellowship, and live. People need encouragement and are eager to hear a kind word. People need to laugh and want to smile. Let’s make August – as summer ends and school begins – an amazing month as a symbol of hope and love to all. I am so glad you are with me as we continue the journey of my town, your town, OUR TOWN! ancial Aid • Catholic Values • Financial Aid ended Day • Program Community Service • Extended Day Program • Catholic Values • Financial Aid ue Ribbon School of Involvement Excellence• Community • Family • Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Service • Extended Day Program • Family Involvement • Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Patience is a Virtue: Unexpected Inspiration at the Grocery Store By Karla Socci Somers After an hour of shopping, I was in a hurry to get back home, so I wheeled my cart full of groceries around, searching for the fastest checkout lane. My usual scout of the checkout lane scene is to: • Push my cart slowly by each open checkout lane, observing the line. • If the line has more than two people waiting to unload carts, I skip it. • If the person ahead of me is just unloading the cart, I skip it. • If the checkout person appears too slow or unfriendly, not a chance. • If there is a screaming kid in the cart with an oblivious parent, definitely not a chance. • If the person has a two-inch thick stack of coupons, no way. • If the person is writing a check, forget it. • Select best option based on above criteria. • Proceed cautiously. I completed my assessment and chose a line with a friendly-looking employee and what appeared to be a person loading her paid-for

groceries back into her reusable shopping bags. I was wrong. The woman in front of me was just beginning to unload her reusable shopping bags. Great, I thought. My usually fail-proof system failed me. I still had to get home and cook dinner, and it was already after 7:00 pm on a Sunday night. I tried to see over the magazines and gum to find out if the line immediately next to me was quicker. As I did, the woman said loudly, “These bags help me organize my groceries.” I looked back at her. She appeared to be in her thirties. She was wearing her Kroger uniform, as if her shift had just ended before she went shopping. She wore glasses and her hair was cut in a cute bob with bangs. She smiled at me and continued to chatter away. “My mom found these bags online,” she said, cheerily. “They are really great because I organize my groceries while I shop and then after I pay, they put them back in the same bags for me. It makes it really easy to unload them at home.” “Yeah, I bet,” I told her just as cheerfully, realizing my new perspective on what I would have otherwise categorized as a huge inconve-

nience. Although I did not want to wait for her to unload her full cart, I couldn’t bring myself to back my cart away to the line on my left with no customers. Instead, I waited patiently, thinking, “God must want me to slow down, and this lovely woman with special needs is here to carry out His plan for me.” “Can you help me get that one?” the woman was saying to me. “It’s stuck on that side of the cart.” I helped her unhook the bag. The checkout woman began dumping each bag onto the conveyer and scanning every item. Another girl bagged the groceries into the same containers they came out of. “This is a lot of groceries!” the woman exclaimed. “We have a family of five, so that’s why I have to buy so much!” She seemed excited. She repeated it again to the checkout clerk. “We have a family of five, you know? That’s why I have to buy so many groceries.” “I see that,” the checkout woman said, softly. She was older and had a gentle demeanor. “Did you call me yesterday?” the woman said loudly to the checkout clerk. “Because if you did, I couldn’t answer my phone.” “No, sweetheart, I was off yesterday. It wasn’t me,” said the checkout woman. “Well, someone called me, but I didn’t get it,” the woman said again. “Are you sure it wasn’t you?” Apparently, she wasn’t convinced. “No, honey. It wasn’t. Nathan worked yesterday, but I wasn’t here. Maybe he called you,” she offered politely. “Your total is $127.83.” “Wow! That’s a lot of money!” exclaimed the younger woman. “How much did I save?”

“Seventeen sixty-one,” the older woman said, much to the shopper’s delight. We all waited while the bag-girl put the groceries carefully into her cart, in their respective, organized, categorized, reusable bags. “How are you getting home?” the checkout clerk asked the woman. “Is someone coming to get you?” “I’m going to call my father,” she said. “First, I am going to go outside and sit down on the bench and get situated. You know, I don’t like to take out my phone when I’m walking because I’m afraid I’ll drop it. Once I’m sitting down, I can use my phone and call my father to let him know I’m ready to come home.” “OK, sweetheart, that’s good. You have a nice night, okay?” said the older woman. “OK! I’ll see you Tuesday,” said the younger one. “I’m not working tomorrow but I’ll be back on Tuesday. And, I can’t answer my phone if you call me tomorrow because my dad has a doctor’s appointment.” “OK. Bye, dear,” said the cashier. I unloaded the contents of my cart onto the conveyor, and it was now my turn to check out. As I approached the register, I saw the checkout woman’s nametag. She was the front-end manager of the store. She smiled at me and said, “How are you tonight?” “I’m good, thanks,” I said, smiling at her. I paid for my groceries, and headed out to my car thinking that my fail-proof checkout assessment method hadn’t really failed me after all. Skin So Simple: Treating Skin Discoloration of All Types

Chris’

BARBER SHOP

By Lisa Clinkscale Porter, Aesthetician Hyperpigmentation, which can show up in the form of brown spots, discoloration, or uneven skin tone is most commonly caused by years of exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Other causes include acne, hormones, stress, genetics, and chemical reactions to medications. As discussed last month, the sun is the most common trigger because we get so much exposure early in life. Treating hyperpigmentation is a multi-faceted process that starts with wearing SPF15sunscreen or higher to protect the skin from further damage. Plus, sunscreen will prevent counteracting treatment results. It is also important to exfoliate the skin with professional strength fruit enzymes, otherwise known as fruit peels, to systematically slough off existing discoloration. Depending on the severity of the discoloration, more aggressive peels may be necessary to resurface the skin. Resurfacing the skin will also help with any textural problems such as fine lines and wrinkling caused by sun damage. It is equally important to use skin-brightening agents to help control melanin formation and balance out hyper-pigmented areas. For best results, these steps should be taken simultaneously. The great news is that there are many different treatments available to dramatically change both the texture and appearance of discolored skin. The earlier you start the better your chances are of seeing improvement. What is on the surface only represents a small amount of the damage beneath the skin. Left untreated, this damage will rise to the surface and become more visible with age and additional sun exposure. The key is to be proactive, or to at least address it as soon as you begin seeing the signs. Either way, it’s never too late to start changing the texture and appearance of the skin. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. How does your skin look? Lisa Clinkscale Porter is owner of Unique Face Options, Inc. Getting to Know: Georgia Christian Business Network By Michelle Watson In 2009 Elizabeth Bailey Copeland cofounded Georgia Christian Business Network (GCBN) with an initial focus on “networking with a greater vision.” When Copeland became the Executive Director in 2011, GCBN took on a new look and a new perspective. The rebranding process identified that networking was a byproduct of a greater vision and the need to Put God Back in Business! After decades of working in the corporate world, Copeland saw that honoring God was missing from most businesses including those owned by Christians. Copeland believes wholeheartedly that God has a plan and every individual is a part of it. That we are all created “on purpose for a specific purpose” is a message that resonates at every GCBN event. GCBN’s mission is to engage, encourage, educate, and empower Christians to live and work according to biblical principles in their daily transactions. The organization’s foundation is based upon ethics, engaging & encouraging, educating & empowering, and economics. Legal Lessons: Avoiding Real Estate Title Problems after Death or Divorce By David Walker A real estate closing is about to happen when a title problem appears. The seller is a widow, but the title to her home is still under the names of both her and her deceased husband. A deed is needed from the executor of his estate in order to allow her to sell the home, but her husband’s will has never been probated. This can take time, so the closing may have to be postponed or it may fall through. This event happened recently, and our office was asked to handle the problem. We were able to probate the will by obtaining the consent of all the heirs, including out-of-state children of the deceased husband. Fortunately, they were willing to consent, so the process did not take too long and the closing did take place as planned. Problems like this often occur if the seller is a widow or widower and the title of the home has never been updated to remove the deceased spouse’s name. Or, the seller may be divorced and the former spouse’s name has never been removed from the title. In either of these situations, the problem could have been avoided by preparing and filing the deeds necessary to update the title soon after the death or divorce. Any person who inherits property, or is going through a divorce, should obtain legal advice to check the title to their home to see if legal work needs to be done. In the situation of a widow or widower, if the house was owned jointly, the will would need to be probated, or the estate would need to appoint a personal representative or executor who can sign the necessary deed. In a divorce, the party receiving the home or other real estate should have that stated in the divorce settlement and any necessary deed should be signed and recorded at the time the settlement documents are signed. Our office handles these types of matters and would be glad to be of assistance. David Walker is an Attorney and Owner of Walker Law Firm. More information at http:// www.walker-law-firm.com/

405 Killian Hill Road NW | Lilburn, GA 30047 | 770-923-9810

It was 10 a.m. on the 4th of July, 2013. I was riding bikes in the neighborhood with my then seven-year-old son, RJ. I told RJ to follow me on his bike, so I went down the road. As I was gaining speed, I was able to slow down using my brakes, and I finally made a U-turn in the cul-de-sac. A couple of seconds later, here comes my boy trying to follow his daddy, and as he was gaining speed he somehow froze and wasn’t able to slow down or turn, so he crashed at the end of the road. The biggest problem was that as his front wheel hit the side of the sidewalk, he went flying straight towards the ground, but before he landed, his head hit a fire hydrant. I was watching the incident a couple of meters away, so as soon as I saw that, I jumped off my bike and ran to him. And there he was, lying face down on the ground. When I turned him over all I could see was blood running down his face. I picked him up in my arms and I ran to our house. I don’t think I have ever run two blocks as fast as I did that day. Yet as I was running with him in my arms with his face covered in blood, all I could hear was my little boy screaming and crying, “Don’t let me die, Daddy. Don’t let me die.” We got to the hospital, and 19 stitches on his head later, he was fine. I still remember the doctor and nurses constantly saying to my wife and me that if he had not been wearing a helmet, he probably would have died instantly. That was probably one of the scariest moments of my life, especially when it comes down to my children. But at the end of the day, I wasn’t afraid of riding my bike; I wasn’t the one who fell off and needed to get back on. It took my son almost a whole year before he was able to get back on that bike, and when he finally did, it started almost like when he was three years old. He would only go short distances, wanted me to be by his side at all times, and would go only to safe places. As time went on, Continued on page 25

By Kim Hill Enthusiasm. It radiates from Steve Ridley’s core when he talks about Cannon Church’s Community Outreach ministry. Guided by its Mission statement, “to Mobilize people to offer Christ,” this youth-minister-turned-outreach-coordinator sees endless possibilities for sharing resources in this community and beyond. Ridley explains that in general, churches have always done missions, which tend to be reactionary in that when there is a need – such as dealing with a hurricane or helping the homelessness – they attempt to fill it. By contrast, he sees outreach as proactive, focusing on developing relationships with groups in the community ahead of need and looking at ways each can help the other. When Cannon Church began the new outreach ministry three years ago, the vision was to be the “good neighbor” that people could feel comfortable seeking out for assistance. Eagle’s Landing Restaurant catered Cannon’s Wednesday night suppers and hosted weekly Bible studies. When the restaurant burned shortly before Thanksgiving, the business was suddenly without a facility to fulfill its holiday catering commitments. The church opened its own kitchen and the catering side of the restaurant was able to continue. More recently, Cannon offered a small apartment on its property as temporary housing to victims of a house fire. The church makes its Education Building available to the community, and allows Brookwood High School students to use its parking lot during the week. “In a simple sense, we are trying to figure out what resources do we as a church have that can benefit our community,” says Ridley, “whether that’s a bus to drive a shuttle, a building for a group to meet, or volunteers to help staff something.” Cannon’s annual Pumpkin Sale uses its proceeds to purchase shoe cards to donate to those in need. Brookwood High School had students wanting to serve, so the groups partnered and BHS provided two thirds of this year’s volunteers to run the sale. “It’s such a joy when we can find a connection that wasn’t there that’s mutually beneficial to everybody involved,” says Ridley. When the ministry sought to find ways to help the schools, it was rewarded with a long list of needs. Response from Gwinnett County School system has been positive. “We’re not crossing any boundaries; we’re leveraging the resources that we have,” Ridley explains.” I would argue that in any community that has a struggling school, I bet there is a non-struggling church. If you can get that school and that church to partner together, they are going to take people that need something to do, and a place that needs people to do something, and it’s going to put those two things together.” Ridley stresses that the message is not about what Cannon Church is doing, but about mobilizing people to serve. “We hope people reading about what is happening with community outreach will be inspired to either A, plug into it and be involved, or B, if you are part of a church or another group, say, ‘How can we get started?’ The goal is to create opportunities beyond one church’s resources by partnering with businesses, schools, other churches and nonprofits, and using these connections to place money, people, space and other resources where they will do the most good.” For more information, contact Steve Ridley at SteveR@CannonChurch.org

Snellville Entrepreneur, Jestacia Jones, Offers Holistic Approach to Education By Karla Socci Somers Jestacia Jones is on an important mission: she wants to see every child excel in school and in life, regardless of his or her financial status. For the past twenty years, Jones has worked as a holistic health and beauty expert for a variety of artists and celebrities. With a strong desire to give back to her community, and a belief that all kids should have a holistic education, Jones’ most important “celebrity” clients now consist of Gwinnett County school children. Through her innovative, hands-on program, E3 Lego/Robotics Club, Jones is making a difference for families that might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a holistic approach to education. “Enrichment and exposure are the keys to overcoming poverty,” Jones says. “We bring our Education, Engineering, Exposure (the 3E’s of the Lego/Robotics Club) program to Gwinnett County schools so kids can learn about robotics and engineering.” The program is geared toward elementary kids, and is currently at Partee Elementary in Snellville for second and third graders. Jones realized the great potential for learning and experiencing technology at a young age with her son, Alexander (now age 9). She recognized that kids could learn valuable lessons in problem-solving, communication, engineering principals, critical thinking, and creativity while they played with Legos® in a fun environment. Jones has the help of Georgia Institute of Technology engineering student, Angelique McCoy, who mentors E3 kids in their six-week program. At the end, they wrap up with a ceremony and celebration of the kids’ accomplishments. Jones notes that the key to their success in the E3 Club is parents. “Parent involvement is required,” Jones says, “so, it is a win-win for the schools because they want parents to get involved.” As a former PTA president, Jones has experienced firsthand the difference parental involvement makes in the education of young children. Additionally, Jones, an ordained minister, believes it is important to show parents what happens when they take time out of their busy schedules to devote time to their kids. Jones paraphrases a favorite encouragement by Ghandi by saying instead, “Be the change you wish to see in the schools.” Once parents see what their kids can accomplish, everyone becomes excited about education and learning, and with that attitude, anything is possible for kids, regardless of their social status or economic background. In addition to the E3 Lego/Robotics Club, Jones established the J’Lore Foundation, Inc. The Foundation partners with Panera Bread to provide food to underprivileged kids every week. As Jones advocates and implements, a holistic approach to raising children includes meeting all of their needs, including such basic ones as having enough food to eat. With donations from local businesses and parents, E3 Lego/Robotics Club will be offering a summer camp and “free-build Fridays” where kids can learn about science and technology in a fun, creative environment. “Our goal is to impact the children in positive way that sets them up for success,” says Jones. It seems she is doing just that, one Lego® at a time. Jestacia Jones is the founder of E3 Lego/Robotics Club and the J’Lore Foundation. Up Close with Trickum Middle School Principal Ryan Queen By Kim Hill

Providence is a distinctly covenant, Christian school that encourages spiritual development while integrating Biblical truth into every subject area.

The words “new principal” can evoke a range of emotions in a school. Ryan Queen wants the Trickum community to know that this school is their school, and that they are welcome any day and every day. “I personally welcome anybody to talk to me to see what we have planned and where we’re headed; what we’re doing instructionally – how we’re working hard every day to insure students are learning, and learning at high levels.” Queen considers the Parkview Cluster the foundation of both his personal and his professional life. He began his career in education nineteen years ago as a biology teacher at Parkview High School. While working and being involved in the community, he was introduced to his wife by her parents, who were longtime volunteers for Parkview Soccer. The Queens have two daughters. After six years at Parkview, Queen transferred to South Gwinnett where he served as the Local School Technology Coordinator. He coached softball at both schools, and also coached academic bowl and science bowl teams. He left South Gwinnett after six years to become an administrator, spending time as an assistant principal at Berkmar High School and at McConnell Middle School. He then had the opportunity to go to the district office where he was Director of Instructional Resources in the Curriculum and Instruction division, an experience he considers invaluable as it allowed him to see the school district in its entirety. Last year, his career came full circle when he returned to Parkview as Associate Principal. He says the opportunity to become a principal in this cluster is something he could have only dreamed,

Enhanced by multiple offerings in art, music, technology and athletics, Providence offers K-12 students a challenging academic program, including a nationally certified STEM program.

The 4 R’s in Learning! “Reading, ‘Riting, ‘Rithmetic, and Responsibility” By Carol C. Wood We have all heard about the 3 “R”s in academics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, but in reality there is a fourth “R,” which is responsibility. Ask any teacher about this fourth component and he or she will tell you the most prevalent challenge for students is demonstrating responsible behavior with their school assignments. Learning responsibility begins at home, so following are a few ways to help your children grow in personal responsibility which will carry over into the classroom. Add small jobs in and around the house. It can be something as simple as feeding the pets on specific days, or collecting trash from around the house and taking it to the pick-up location. Perhaps a task such as vacuuming the house each Saturday morning could be assigned. Small jobs at home help children foster a sense of belonging to their family and of taking pride in their homes. Give small rewards to your children when jobs are done beyond what was expected. Rewards can be as simple as verbal praise and a smile! Be careful not shower your children with too much praise for tasks that are expected to be complete since doing so can be counterproductive. Talk to your children about the various home responsibilities of each family member so they understand how each is vital to the process and how each works together for a successful outcome. Providing a logical reason for home tasks is important to children! You can also teach them the concept “The sum of the parts is greater that the whole.” Open up dialogue about setting goals. Encourage your children to set their own goals and to write them down on paper where they can see them daily. It is important that children come up with their own ideas of goals to set. For young children, assign tasks that can be accomplished in a very short time. It is important that young children experience a beginning and an end to the goal. It can be as simple as putting away

Pet Perch: 5 Must Know Tips When Bringing Home Your New Puppy

N

OR

THOPE DI

E

SN

EL L LVI

L

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting event for any family. But keep in mind a new puppy is like a blank slate you’re writing on each and every day. 1. Stay calm. Excitement is sensory overload for your new puppy and can lead to an overexcited dog later on. Your pup will reflect how you are acting. Reward calm behavior and ignore or redirect excited behaviors to help your puppy stay calm and to make training easier. 2. Take it slow and limit access to your home initially. Your puppy has just been taken from the only family it has known and put into unfamiliar surroundings with new people. It’s scary! Limit him or her to one room in your home at first. Over the next few days and weeks gradually introduce your pup to the other rooms one at a time while on leash. 3. Crate train for safety and for potty success. A crate is not a jail or punishment; it is a tool which among other things helps your new puppy feel safe and which limits activity, thereby allowing you to help your puppy control its toileting. When used properly, your pup will come to love its crate. 4. The ninety pound Rottweiler rule. Whether your puppy will grow to be 5 lbs. or 105 lbs., think 90 lb. Rottweiler. Any behaviors that you would not allow from a 90 lb. Rottweiler shouldn’t be allowed from your puppy. Example: Your puppy jumps in your lap or up on you. This seems harmless enough since he’s just a puppy, right? But a few months from now, you may not feel the same when he jumps on guests or tackles the neighbor’s children. 5. Leash manners pronto! Start getting your pup used to the leash immediately. Too many times people wait months before putting the leash on their pup. The longer you wait, the more challenging it is for you and your pup. expressing that “It’s truly an honor and a blessing.” Queen feels his varied experiences have provided him with a unique perspective of education and of the world of Gwinnett County Public Schools. He offers that the beauty of education is the chance to be rewarded on a daily basis. As he moved into leadership, he realized there is opportunity to have an impact on a larger number of kids than he had as a teacher. His daily reflection focuses on how to make tomorrow better than today, and on how he can impact children in a positive way, as well as helping them to build a foundation for success in life. He explains that time is required for the process to take hold so that positive results can be seen. Ryan Queen looks forward to his role in serving the Parkview cluster. “This is a wonderful community, one that I do know well,” he says, “and obviously with a new principal there will be change. But I’m not looking to come in and make change for change’s sake. I’m looking to maintain the great tradition and pride and success that this cluster and this community expects and is accustomed to. My goal here is really to support the teachers, and support the students in becoming all that they can be.” More information at http://www.trickum.org/home.html

Community Member Spotlight: Art Wood Enjoys Life with Family, Community, Church, and Local Business By Heidi Campbell Art Wood wears numerous hats: dad, husband, coach, worship leader, businessman, community leader, and Tucker native. After graduating from Tucker High School in 1992, he went on to Erskine College where he got his degree in business administration. After college, Wood worked for his dad in the truck and auto parts industry before jumping into his mortgage career in 2005. He married his wife, Karen, in 2007, and they have two children, five-year-old Makenna, and seven-year-old Trace. He leads a busy life filled with family and faith. “Family is who I am…and mortgage is what I do,” admits Wood. A self-proclaimed extrovert, Wood knew that the mortgage industry would be perfect for him. In 2010, Art decided to purchase a building on Main Street in Tucker where he now operates as the vice president and branch manager of MB Financial Bank. He aims to help his clients avoid the marketing pitfalls that can potentially lead them astray. “People are trained to believe that it is all about interest rates,” he explains. “My approach is to walk them through all of their rate, cost, and term options and customize their mortgage. This is not a one-size-fits all business. My clients appreciate it. I’ve had clients grab me at the closing table and just cry. Those are the times you know you are in the right place.” Wood is very active in his community and church. He is a board member at Smoke Rise Country Club where he founded a monthly Fuse Networking group for business men and women in the area. He and his wife also head the annual Taste of Tucker event. “My wife and I wanted to do something big to bring the community together. What started out as a couple hundred people and a few praise bands, has now turned into a huge event where thousands of folks from the community show up to support our local restaurants,” explains Wood. “The festival outgrew our church parking lot and has been on Main Street for the last four years. This year it is set for October 22nd. It has been exciting to watch Tucker respond. They show up in droves!” Since 2004, Wood has led the Table 153 worship band at Tucker United Methodist’s relaxed, contemporary service. He says, “I’m a self-taught, hobbyist singer and guitarist. I have no formal training at all. I’ve always loved music, believed in God, and been a Christian. I love playing music and working with God, and I’m forever grateful to the church for giving me this opportunity.” Wood’s worship band now plays “Pints and Praise” at Rivals on Five the third Monday of every month. He enjoys this event where families get involved in the music, kids belt out the lyrics to “Let it Go,” local guitarists can play along, and the community enjoys a positive experience. “I truly believe,” says Wood, “that we are given gifts and talents for a reason. I believe it is important to do the best you can for as many as you can.” For more info on any of these topics email: Art@ArtWoodOnline.com

Georgia Christian Business Network Continued from page 10 to the workplace on Monday.” She wants to help people realize they are created for greatness, they are worthy of success, and they can overcome the obstacles to their success by implementing the principles found in biblical truths. GCBN has grown to include several chapters throughout Georgia. The Gwinnett chapter meets the first Thursday of each month for their Hour of Power, an hour-long breakfast and business training. They meet again the third Thursday for either a lunch-and-learn or an evening training facilitated by experts who empower small business owners and professionals. Copeland says she is always looking to partner with companies and organizations with values that line up with the vision and mission of GCBN. Anyone who wants to join a network of Christians and learn about topics that will help them grow their business is welcome to attend a GCBN meeting. There is a nominal cost for attending, and registration is available on the GCBN website for any meeting or event. Annual events include an anniversary gala; a magnificent moms day of ministry; financial workshops; the rise of the entrepreneur; a health day; and a God, Golf, and Girls retreat full of learning business empowerment skills and practicing golf swings. The 4 R’s In Learning Continued from page 18 game parts before taking another game from the shelf. Be sure to assign tasks that the child is physically and/or cognitively capable of completing. Query your children at the conclusion of tasks regarding how they feel they did. For example, you might ask how they would rate their performance, what they learned as a result of completing the task, or what they would do differently, if anything, the next time. Fostering responsibility in children requires parents to exert their energy and time. It is well worth the effort because in doing so, children will display this same level of responsibility in the classroom and eventually in the work place. Carol C. Do you know who was the Georgia State winner of the PTA Reflections Award for Film Production? If you had been at the Woodruff Arts Center on March 16, 2016, you would have known it was Sebastian Soler, a thirteen-year-old seventh grader at Crews Middle School in Snellville. Sebastian’s entry, “The Galactic Titan,” was a short stopmotion movie that won the Best Animated Movie in the Gwinnett County Public Library Teen Film Challenge. But that’s not all. Sebastian is not only talented in film making, but he’s also adept at writing computer game codes. He and his best friends from Crews Middle School, Azeez Hussain, Elijah Vaughn, and Sanjay Ravigopal, were contestants in CodeDay Atlanta. The nationwide competition for high school and Georgia Tech students covers twenty-four hours of non-stop work where students sleep and eat whenever they can until their project is completed. Sebastian and his team came away winning the Best Game Award. This past May was a banner year for Sebastian. He received three academic awards at Crews Middle School: Honor Roll as a straight A student, the Citizen Award, and the State Reflections Winner Award. When Sebastian isn’t making a film or coding a computer project, he’s a cellist in the Crews orchestra. He also enjoys participating in the USTA and ALTA tennis leagues, and the new Crews Intramural Tennis Program created by his uncle, Carlos Soler, a professional tennis coach. Sebastian still finds time to participate in the Brookwood Craft Show where he and his grandmother offer their creations to the public. Sebastian creates Perler bead art and his grandmother makes scarves, greeting cards, and jewelry – two generations working together as a team. He has donated part of his earnings to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta. Young Sebastian Soler shines as a brilliant star in the sky of achievement. Community Business Spotlight: Family Values and Business Practices Make Cook’s Pest Control a Popular Choice for Customers By Macrae Brennan-Fuller For many years, Cook’s Pest Control has etched its Cookie the Cop mascot and its catchy jingle – “Lookie, Lookie, Lookie. Here Comes Cookie!” – into the minds of its customer base and anyone who owns a TV set or radio. But there is definitely more to this family-owned, customer service-oriented pest control company than its unforgettable jingle and memorable mascot. Nearly ninety years ago, founder John L. Cook launched the company with only one fulltime employee and a few accounts. Little did he know that his small business would grow into one of the nation’s largest pest control companies with more than 300,000 customers. Although the size of Cook’s Pest Control has transformed over the years, one thing remains the same – its family-oriented approach to customer service. In fact, John R. Cook, carried on the family tradition when he abruptly took over the company after his father’s passing in the early 1950s. Soon after graduating from Georgia Tech, the younger Cook embodied the definition of customer service when he abandoned a promising career as an architect to fulfill the five-year termite guarantees his father contracted through North Alabama Termite Company. In time, he decided to add pest control services and changed the name of the company to its current name. In building the company’s ethical foundation over the years, the Cook family has stressed the importance of honesty, courtesy, respect, and customer satisfaction. “Great customer service and satisfaction are the lifelines of our business,” Cook’s Pest Control Atlanta NE District Manager Keith Seamon said. “Our customer-first mindset is the reason for our continued success today.” The company attributes the effectiveness of its protection from termites and pests to its dependable technicians, superior training program, guaranteed scope of services, and dedication to environmentally-responsible products. All of these factors contributed to the company earning the 2001 Better Business Bureau National Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

PAGE 24

Cook’s also believes a home should be a place of refuge and comfort, and is committed to ensuring that homeowners do not have to fear the presence of pests that can cause embarrassment or concerns about health. In addition to residential properties, Cook’s also provides pest control and termite services to more than 20,000 businesses in a variety of industries such as food service, entertainment, healthcare, and manufacturing. Skilled technicians specialize in commercial service work and complete extensive training both in the classroom and the field. Cook’s has also developed a strong reputation in the field of new construction. After decades of working alongside builders and developers to protect new homes and other new structures, Cook’s has concluded there is no better technology for termite protection than the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System. “Customers can have peace of mind and confidence with Sentricon because of our commitment to offer only the best for our customers,” Seamon said. With small Sentricon stations placed discreetly around a home or structure, the system is more appealing to customers than traditional liquid chemical treatments. It does not require the drilling of floors and foundations or trenching. Additionally, the Sentricon System does not inject chemical solutions into floors, foundations, or yards. Customers will find peace of mind knowing the Sentricon System currently protects more than two million structures, including the White House, the Statue of Liberty, the Alamo, and other national treasures. And, backed by the Cook’s commitment to excellence in customer satisfaction, it’s easy to see why so many customers are choosing Cook’s. Nearly one century after its founding, Cook’s Pest Control continues to uphold the family tradition of customer service with a newer generation at the helm. Cook’s has 34 district offices in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee, with a roster of more than 1,400 employees. More information at www.cookspest.com

Chaplain’s Corner Continued from page 12 and as he was daily trying and trusting in his bicycle, he started going longer distances, eventually without me on the side. Now he can ride his bicycle to places that he has never been before. The more that I think about that day, the more I realize that riding a bicycle is pretty much like a faith journey in life. Sometimes you will fall down, and in many cases it will hurt; but the only way to keep moving forward is to get back on and keep trying and keep trusting.

Forrest Woodland Rebecca Woodland Owners

I wish I could tell you that in life you need to live a life without fear, but that is almost impossible. Yet, I want to encourage you today to let your faith be greater than your fear. Even when you face some scary challenges in life and fear is overwhelming you, let your faith speak to you louder than your fear; let your faith ride with you at all times, and let your faith lead you and take you to places where you have never been before.
