Chiropractic and Functional Medicine A Natural Approach to Healthcare

Who I Am

u Dr. Gravante is currently enrolled at USF School of Medicine working on her graduate degree in Metabolic Nutritional Medicine. u In 2014, Dr. Gravante will be completing her Fellowship in Anti-Aging Regenerative Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. u Dr. Gravante is a national speaker on Functional Medicine. u Dr. Gravante serves as an Examiner for the National Board of Chiropractic.

What I Do

Chiropractic and Functional Medicine are a perfect union in natural healthcare. Both of these healing arts focus on the cause of the problem – not just the symptom. Chiropractic’s main focus is with the biomechanical (structural) function of the body while Functional Medicine focuses on the biochemical (metabolism) of the body. Together they are a powerful synergistic approach to wellness.

How I Can Help

Dr. Gravante has had great success treating many neuromuscular skeletal conditions. The following are some of the most common issues: u Headaches (including migraines) u Back pain u Extremity pain (shoulder, knee, etc.) u Neck pain u Sciatica Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease by using a systems-oriented approach. Functional Medicine promotes health as a positive vitality – not just the absence of disease. Functional Medicine addresses the following Chronic Metabolic Conditions, such as: u Auto Immune u Obesity u High Cholesterol u Diabetes u Arthritis u Hypertension * More than we can list... Please call our office or visit our website for more information

On the Cover: AC Spine and Wellness Center: Wellness at the Cellular Level By Stacye Carroll Housed inside a gray and white building that looks more like a home than a doctor’s office, AC Spine and Wellness Center doesn’t look like most medical offices. Stepping inside only reinforces that impression. Educational videos play to a comfortable waiting room featuring an entire wall of supplements, and next door another waiting room is filled with brightly colored furniture and toys for children. Since 1992, Doctors Louis Cavallo and Jeanette Altieri have combined functional and chiropractic care to provide patients with an alternative kind of healthcare that is focused on wellness at a cellular level. First-time patients are evaluated from both a medical and chiropractic standpoint, and testing is done in-house. The result is an individualized nutritional blueprint and a personal healthcare program that are presented to the patient who then decides his or her own course of action. “We’re here to educate,” says Dr. Cavallo, adding, “Doctor means teacher.” There is a treatment area where patients can rehab neck injuries, which includes vibrational therapy that serves to lock in adjustments. In the massage therapy room, the therapist may use a Pettibon Tendon Ligament Muscle Stimulator (PTLMS), which aids in pain management and regeneration of injured tissues. There are spaces set aside for chiropractic adjustment, and a special room Dr. Altieri calls her “Deer Room,” that is outfitted especially for children, with the adjustment table sporting a set of antlers. In the hallway, every room is flanked by a row of chairs occupied by “wobble discs,” which not only provide a necessary warm-up for muscles about to be treated, but also help to align patients’ spines. X-rays are performed at the center, as well as full-body thermography – an enhanced procedure

that detects skin temperature variances possibly due to inflammation. Thermography can assist in early diagnosis of thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal problems, and even cancer. In many cases breast cancer cells can be detected before a lump is found and blood supply to the area can be determined, providing vital information to the patient as she decides on a course of treatment. Dr. Cavallo is one of only two chiropractors in the state of Georgia certified to perform OTZ, a procedure used for the correction of frozen shoulder syndrome, a condition that inhibits normal range of motion. OTZ can correct the problem in as little as six to fourteen treatments, depending on severity. Patients come to AC Spine and Wellness from Alabama, North Carolina, and neighboring states to receive this cutting edge treatment. According to Dr. Altieri, the body is a self-healing, selfregulating organism that can restore itself when brought into balance. This is achieved by combining nutrition, exercise, and supplements, which can be purchased at the center. AC Spine and Wellness works with several of the top labs in the country to ensure that the supplements they offer are of the purest quality and at medicinal levels. Over time, many patients find they no longer require prescription medications. The key, says Dr. Cavallo, is long-term compliance. When evaluating patients, he says, “We aren’t concerned with today. We’re looking at the future.” While AC Spine and Wellness receives referrals from specialists such as neurologists and pain management clinics, most new patients are referred by current patients sharing their success stories, some of which can be found on their website. Dr. Louis Cavallo and Dr. Jeanette Altieri own AC Spine and Wellness Center. More information at http:// www.acspineandwellness.com

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion @RyanSauers

Time flies. It seemed that summer just began and school was about to get out. Now, we are headed back to school and fall will soon be in the air. I spend a lot of time in different parts of the United States. Our community is as good if not better than any other in any region of the country. We live right outside one of the biggest cities in the nation, yet we still have a close knit community with a family feel. This is not the norm and it is so very special. This month’s cover story is AC Spine and Wellness Center. You need to check them out. Other stories include talking to Pastor Buddy Hoffman from Grace Fellowship Church, a Community Spotlight on Mike and Peggy Levengood who do so much in Gwinnett, and an interview with Principal Penny Young of Arcado Elementary. Thank you to the newest advertisers who have joined the Our Town family: Mercer Physical Therapy, Thele Moore Agency, Audiology Center of Snellville, and Serenity Financial and Insurance. If you enjoy this magazine please support these and all of the Our Town family of advertisers. Community Member Spotlight:

Body Flo

Mike and Peggy Levengood

Private and Group

By Stacye Carroll

Reformer, Mat, Barr

While their names may not be familiar to you, anyone who’s raised a family in Gwinnett County in the last twenty years has benefitted from the work Mike and Peggy Levengood have done in our community. When Mike mentions his tenure as Parkview PTSA’s co-president, he’s quick to explain that Peggy might have filled the role had she not already accepted the same position at Camp Creek Elementary. The couple, now married thirty-four years, raised three sons in Lilburn. All three attended Parkview High School, and their names – Tommy, Michael, and Timothy – can be found on the “wall of fame” in Parkview’s main entrance hall. Besides being Scholar Athletes and National Merit Award winners, Tommy was a member of the undefeated 2000 State Championship football team, Michael was a Science Olympiad champion, and Timothy played on the tennis team and served as co-captain of the marching band. Mike served as vice-president of the Touchdown Club, and Peggy served as president of the Tennis Booster Club. Peggy credits this experience, as well as her role as team captain of Timothy’s ALTA and USTA teams, with creating a passion for the game. At the age of fifty, she picked up her racket and continues to play today, often bringing Mike along for mixed doubles. Mike credits the University of Georgia (UGA) and its motto – “To teach, to serve, and to inquire as to the nature of things” – with instilling in them the importance of giving back. He, Peggy, and two of their sons attended college at UGA, and Mike remains an adjunct faculty member at the school of law. Mike describes how on a drive through Lilburn in 1987 he and Peggy were taken with the layout of the schools and how impressed they were with the parks. At the time many parents were choosing to home-school their children. “We home-schooled our kids, too,” Mike says. “We just supplemented with the greatest educational system in America.” In addition to serving as PTSA president, Mike led several successful SPLOST renewal campaigns, and continues as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation. In 2001, Mike incorporated the Gwinnett Parks Foundation, and Peggy has served as president for the last seven years. The foundation promotes good stewardship, education, and volunteerism, and organizes fundraising to support scholarships. With foundation and community support, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation won the National Gold Medal Award in 2008, and is a finalist for the 2014 prize to be announced in October. Currently, Peggy serves as co-president of the Georgia chapter of the National Scleroderma Foundation, which she helped form after her sister succumbed to the disease in 2011. Mike serves on the boards of the Gwinnett Health System, the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and the Leadership Gwinnett Foundation. Last month, Mike transitioned from his partnership in a large Atlanta law firm where he’d practiced for over thirty years to open the Law Office of J. Michael Levengood in Lawrenceville. Peggy, when not organizing the Miss Parkview Pageant, raising money for research and treatment of scleroderma, or playing tennis, will help manage the new office. When asked if there was anything they hadn’t done yet but wanted to do, the answer came quick, “Travel!” It’s a good bet that, wherever they go, they’ll leave the place just a little better than they found it. I am writing this from the breakfast area of a 1890s Bed & Breakfast, with the melodies of birds for my morning music. As the only guest in this house that was built by the great-great grandfather of the current owner, I have enjoyed the entire home, a morning out-of-routine, and the quiet. In essence, this has become a sanctuary. Sanctuary is “a place where someone or something is protected or given shelter; the protection that is provided by a safe place.” In my sanctuary this morning, I reconnected with my enjoyment of history. As I enjoyed coffee in the living room, I read the history of the family who once created memories within these walls. Reading about them in this setting made it real and alive. I could “see” the children jumping on a pogo stick down the eleven foot wide hallway. I could get up and view the room, which is now the dining room, where the original owner/builder sat and practiced law. As I walked across the wooden floors, the creaking sounds made me smile! And I am content. It is time to leave this safe, protected place. I feel so refreshed, renewed, rejuvenated, and relaxed. When I return home, I am choosing to consistently create sanctuary time. No doubt I will return to this place in my memory and recapture the importance of sanctuary. Experiencing sanctuary may be easier away from home, but it can be created. Think about these questions: What keeps you from creating sanctuary? How important is sanctuary? What represents sanctuary to you? Why/how is sanctuary important for living4forward? What’s preventing you from creating a space for sanctuary? Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. More information at www.takethenextstepcct.com.

Arcado Elementary Wins National Green Ribbon Award for 2014 By Heidi Campbell Arcado Elementary was one of only two Georgia schools, forty-nine schools total, to receive the 2014 National Green Ribbon Sustainability award. The school’s principal, Penny Young, along with the sponsors of the school’s “Green Team,” Dr. Kathy Dean and Ms. Christy Bridges, accepted the $5,000 award at the official Green School Ceremony in Washington D.C. on July 22nd. Young, thrilled by the news, revealed, “I feel like our school community has deserved this type of recognition for a long time. We have had a strong parent involvement since this initiative began in the 1990s, and now they can celebrate all the hard work and dedication.” The Green Ribbon award celebrates the school’s true environmental prowess in programing, promoting health, and saving utility costs. According to Young, Arcado uses a collaborative approach regarding “green” initiatives. The school’s nutrition staff visits classrooms to present lessons on the new FDA “Healthy Plate” concept of balanced meals. Teachers dive into the environmental AKS standards with lessons regarding recycling and pollution, and many of the science fair projects are related to the environment. “Environmental education is embedded into the culture at our school,” says Principal Young. “It is who we are and what we do every day. We want our students to become environmental stewards.” Aside from a data-driven system of recycling paper, aluminum, and plastic around the school, a 4th grade “Green Team” works collaboratively with parent volunteers and two teacher sponsors as part of the school’s Environmental Committee. The committee promotes two annual “Walk to School” days, leads an “Anti- Idling” campaign in the parent pick up lane – where the students hold up picket-style posters with lines reading “Little Lungs at Work!” to remind the parents to shut off their engines – and sponsors a tennis shoe recycling week with Nike, who uses the shoes to make recycled flooring for kids’ play areas. Arcado’s outdoor classroom, a registered, official butterfly habitat, is another component of their green experience. The space is a working garden for herbs, vegetables, and plants native to Georgia. One teacher uses the space for an ecology project where the class buries a box at the beginning of the year, then digs it up at the end of the year to measure the decay of the contents. Teachers and students use the classroom’s composting space for their biodegradable waste: coffee grounds and fruit rinds. Young explains that the outdoor classroom is “…not about being the most beautiful outdoor classroom; it is about being the most productive.” A bright yellow light bulb sign hangs on every doorknob in the building to remind staff and students to turn off the lights when no one is in the room. Kids in this eco-friendly school get excited to tell the teachers when they’ve picked up litter or have encouraged someone to recycle. Young says, “Students are so passionate about our environment! They get it! That’s the thing that amazes me about these little people! I really believe that our world is going to be a better place because of these kids.” Arcado Elementary School is located at 5150 Arcado Road in Lilburn, GA. City of Stone Mountain Downtown Achieves 2014 National Main Street Accreditation After meeting the specific revitalization standards as determined by the National Main Street Center, Inc., the City of Stone Mountain Downtown has become an accredited National Main Street Program. Part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Main Street Center lists the accredited Main Street® programs each year to recognize those areas dedicated and committed to historic preservation and community revitalization. “Accredited Main Street programs create vibrant communities by using a comprehensive strategy to preserve their historic character and revitalize their commercial districts, which helps make these great places to work, live, play and visit,” says Patrice Frey, President & CEO of the National Main Street Center. The City of Stone Mountain Downtown Development Authority works with the National Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet certain performance criteria. These standards look at communities that are working toward reviving the area through the building of strong public-private partnerships, developing an operating budget, and preserving historic buildings. “This year we have celebrated the openings of two new businesses, started a façade improvement grant, hosted successful events, and started the Stone Mountain Farmers Market,” says Mechel McKinley, Executive Director. “As we move into the second half of the year we continue to see interest from new businesses and expansion of our events. We have a lot of momentum and the DDA plans to keep things moving in a positive direction.” More information at http://www.stonemountaincity.org/

The World of Chronic Pain By Julie Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC Let’s talk about a subject that we tend to sweep under the carpet or forget about due to our busy lives – chronic pain, a debilitating condition that can stem from a multitude of sources. Imagine having constant, nagging pain every single day of your life that won’t let up! Wouldn’t that make you a little bit agitated, short tempered, exhausted, and even depressed? These pain sufferers have to alter their lives to minimize their issues. They don’t want the attention, so they smile and continue as if nothing is wrong. In the meantime, they have been through ten pairs of shoes to find the right support, and have searched for the best way to sit in the car while driving. They incorporate alternative therapies to reduce their symptoms and balance the body without having to take so many pain medications. It is a 24/7 job just to be able to function! There are multiple solutions to “dealing” with pain. My advice is to form a good pain management team. Don’t go it alone. Invest in yourself and in a better quality of life. Balance your nutrition, get in touch with your body with massage therapy and acupuncture, and reduce your stress with meditation and exercise. Be at peace with your new routine and enjoy the years ahead. If you do not suffer from chronic pain, you are so very blessed. Reach out to those who suffer this way. Be understanding and do not assume they are “high maintenance.” Let them know with a card, a call, or a text that you care and have not forgotten them. That would be the best medicine of all. Julie Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC, is founder and owner of Body of Health. More information at www.bodyofhealthandlife.com

Dwarika’s Spa – A Mystical Visit to Nepal By Pam Walker I know it sounds like a long way to go for a spa trip when there are so many great spas here in the USA, but there is nothing more mystical than a visit to Nepal with its Hindu and Buddhist temples. There you can track the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger in Chitwan National Park and end your trip in the small town of Dhulikhel at the wonderful Dwarika’s Resort, Dhulikhel. A trip to Nepal is exotic enough, visiting its historic cities and wild jungles. But a short distance from Kathmandu in the foothills of the Himalayan range is the Dwarika’s Resort. Not only does this Nepali hotel group have an amazing hotel in Kathmandu, their newest mountain property boasts gorgeous views along with a superb spa. Here, too, you can learn to meditate, go exercise, or join the morning yoga classes. There is even a meditation maze where you walk barefoot through the long green grass as you quietly reach your inner self. Dwarika’s Resort also has quiet meditation rooms, each in a different color of the chakra, with large windows overlooking the mountains. The spa itself offers hot stone, water therapy, massage, and facial treatments, all using Nepali herbs and creams made by the hotel. Hiking and biking can also be enjoyed in the nearby hills. The beautiful rooms, all with balconies overlooking the valley below, are spectacular at sunset, and the all-inclusive meals are sourced from the hotel’s organic gardens. So next time you are looking for an exotic spa getaway, think of Nepal. Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor. More information at www.walkeradventures.com or pliwalker@earthlink.net.

You Bet Your Life By Jeff Hayes Perhaps this article should have been called You Bet Your Life Savings, because if you think that you have, or almost have, enough money saved for your retirement years, then why are you still invested almost entirely in the stock market? These days there seems to be no rhyme or reason why the stock market moves up or down. The only certainty is that the market is currently being supported by the billions of dollars that the United States Treasury is printing every month. Consider this: If a company that is worth 100 million dollars with one million shares of stock outstanding decides to issue another one million shares of stock to its employees as a bonus, then how does that affect the value of the shares that you own? Answer: The value is reduced by half because twice the number of shares, with no increase in the value of the company, makes your shares worth half as much. The same is true of the dollars you saved when the government floods the economy with newly printed currency. Think about what will happen, then, when the artificial support for the stock market and economy, facilitated by the monthly infusion of “new” money, stops. Don’t bet your life savings when there are ways to protect your assets and still earn an acceptable rate of return, along with securing an income for the rest of your life. You will have more peace of mind if you don’t have to worry about outliving your assets. There are many good options available to you in today’s financial marketplace that can eliminate much of the risk associated with what has taken you a lifetime to save. Jeff Hayes is the president of Serenity Financial and Insurance, Inc. More information at: jeff@ seisagency.com.

How to Reach Your Academic Potential! By Carol C. Wood I have often been asked, “Why are there so many students in need of tutorial services?” Having previously taught in the public schools and in industry and having worked with literally thousands of students over the past twenty-eight years in a tutorial environment, I have concluded that many students do not reach their academic potential due to a lack of proper study orientation, better known as study skills. It is critical that students have optimum study orientation. Working harder is not as important as working smarter!

Happy ‘Days’ Are Here Again! Patty and Steve Day know a great home when they see one. After all, they’ve moved 36 times, most recently to Olde Town Grayson. Olde Town Grayson offered the no-maintenance lifestyle the Days were looking for. They chose a roomy 3-bedroom villa, which was elegantly decorated by Patty, an accomplished interior designer.

STUDY ORIENTATION = Study Habits + Study Attitudes Work Methods + Delay Avoidance Teacher Approval + Educational Acceptance

STUDY ORIENTATION is comprised of two components: Study Habits and Study Attitudes. Study Habits can be broken down into Work Methods and Delay Avoidance. Work Methods are a student’s use of effective study procedures, an efficient way of doing academic assignments, and the methods of study used, such as techniques and strategies to take notes, listen, memorize information, and take tests. Delay Avoidance is a student’s promptness in completing academic assignments, lack of procrastination, and freedom from wasteful delay and distractions, such as working and studying every day versus just the night before a test or assignment is due. Study Attitudes consist of Teacher Approval and Educational Acceptance. Teacher Approval is a student’s opinion of teachers, particularly their classroom behavior and teaching methods, such as acclimating to and acceptance of a teacher’s style of instruction and personality. Educational Acceptance is a student’s approval of educational objectives, practices, and requirements, such as accepting and abiding by a school’s policies and procedures, whether the student agrees with them or not. In order for a student to have optimum study orientation, all of these are to be properly executed by the student. To further describe the importance of good study orientation and what is necessary to enable students to reach their academic potential, I often refer to the three legs of a tripod. One leg represents previously taught academic concepts, another leg represents current course work, and the third leg represents good study orientation. Regarding previously taught academic concepts, students must master the material presented in school during earlier months or school years so a solid foundation is formed. Regarding the current school material, students need to stay up to date Continued on page 20

Henry “Hendog” Page Works to Keep Mountain Park’s Concession Stand a Step Above By Heidi Campbell “I probably sell 500 pounds of fries, 200 pounds of chicken fingers, 300 hamburgers, and no telling how many hot dogs in a regular week,” says Henry Page, better known as “Hendog,” Mountain Park’s Vice President of Concessions for the last sixteen years. Page admits that he likes to stay busy. “I have a full time job installing blinds and shutters,” he says. “This is my other full time job. I put about fifty hours a week into this place during the open seasons.” Page is dedicated to upholding the community spirit of Mountain Park. This summer, for instance, the park hosted the Abbigail Grace Foundation Baseball tournament. All proceeds, except for the concessions, were to go to the Dream House for Medically Fragile Children. After record sales, Page opted to make a generous contribution. The stand, which is staffed by two managers and parent volunteers, supports several programs at Parkview High school. “We plan to put signs on the Parkview football and baseball fields. They help us and we help them,” Page adds. The stand also gives a free hot dog and drink to the umpires and to any player who hits a ball over the fence. Page implements creative ideas to increase concession sales. He sells refillable cups, provides convenient “team snacks” (a bag of chips and a drink for $1.00 a kid), and opens nights and weekends to serve the community. “The money raised from concessions goes to the general fund to buy equipment,” Page explains. “The batting cages were bought with concession money. The county doesn’t buy things like fill liner and paint; we do.” Page is proud of the banner hanging by the grill area which reads, “VOTED BEST IN THE COUNTY!” He plans to use a sign at the park entrance to entice the community to experience park dining. “We’re not just a concession stand, we’re a small restaurant! A family of four can eat for under $20.00. I’m known for my chicken fingers, we sell burgers to order, and we even have a custom breakfast now! We bake our own biscuits and I cook my own eggs. Ya’ll come eat here and watch a game!” he says with an encouraging smile. Armed with a new, three-flavor ICEE machine, Page is eager to open for the season. His kids are grown, but he enjoys each season’s new crop of children who race to buy an ice cream from

“Hendog’s Café.” “Parents come and tell me that the food is great,” says Page. “They tell me their kids won’t eat at home, but they love my food! Teams come in from other parks and tell me the food is incredible. That stuff makes me feel good.” The Mountain Park Athletic Association is located at 5050 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn.

How to Reach Your Academic Potential! Continued from page 18 with their school course work in order to further strengthen their academic foundation and lay the groundwork for a competitive GPA for college acceptance. Lastly, regarding study orientation, this leg is often the one that students neglect or forget. When students have good study orientation, they can stay current with course material, learn more in less time, improve their material retention, perform better on tests, improve their grades, and broaden their knowledge base. Additionally, all three legs will be in place so it will not topple over like it would with only two legs. This analogy represents students who are caught up with previously taught material, proficient with current course material, and have a solid study orientation in order to work successfully and independently on their academics and reach their maximum potential. If any of the three are neglected, students will probably not reach their potential, or will require assistance from a tutor year after year to make it through their course work. If you want to change your child’s academic situation, then assess, repair, and maintain all three areas to enable him or her to reach his or her academic potential!
