Chiropractic and Functional Medicine A Natural Approach to Healthcare
Who I Am
u Dr. Gravante is currently enrolled at USF School of Medicine working on her graduate degree in Metabolic Nutritional Medicine. u In 2014, Dr. Gravante will be completing her Fellowship in Anti-Aging Regenerative Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. u Dr. Gravante is a national speaker on Functional Medicine. u Dr. Gravante serves as an Examiner for the National Board of Chiropractic.
What I Do
Chiropractic and Functional Medicine are a perfect union in natural healthcare. Both of these healing arts focus on the cause of the problem – not just the symptom. Chiropractic’s main focus is with the biomechanical (structural) function of the body while Functional Medicine focuses on the biochemical (metabolism) of the body. Together they are a powerful synergistic approach to wellness.
How I Can Help
Dr. Gravante has had great success treating many neuromuscular skeletal conditions. The following are some of the most common issues*: u Headaches (including migraines) u Back pain u Extremity pain (shoulder, knee, etc.) u Neck pain u Sciatica Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease by using a systems-oriented approach. Functional Medicine promotes health as a positive vitality – not just the absence of disease. Functional Medicine addresses the following Chronic Metabolic Conditions, such as*: u Auto Immune u Obesity u High Cholesterol u Diabetes u Arthritis u Hypertension * More than we can list... On the Cover: CrossFit Lilburn: Not Just Your Average Gym By Rachael Brice Who is more fit: a power lifter who can deadlift 1,000 pounds, or a marathon runner who can run 26.2 miles? If you answered neither, you are correct. Greg Glassman, who founded CrossFit in 2000, defines fitness using ten key aspects: cardio and respiratory endurance, strength, speed, stamina, power, coordination, agility, balance, flexibility, and accuracy. If you do not possess each of these facets, then by definition, you are not fit. Dr. Robert Pruni, DC, DACRB, CCSP, CPT and CFL1 and his four Level One CrossFit coaches, teach these ten aspects at CrossFit Lilburn, the only CrossFit facility (also known as a “box”) in the country that not only hosts CrossFit classes, but houses a full three-stage Ninja Warrior obstacle course. Pruni admits he was born with fitness ingrained in him and after he received his Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine, he chose to use his skills and abilities to treat the human body. For over twenty-six years, Pruni has been a doctor and personal trainer. About two years ago, he started training CrossFit and opened CrossFit Lilburn last fall. “I believe I was put on this planet to motivate, inspire, and help people,” Pruni said. “I train the way I do so I can be better for other people.” CrossFit incorporates gymnastics, metabolic
training, and Olympic lifting, so CrossFitters, those who do CrossFit, are ensured a full body workout. Pruni and his team can alter any workout or movement to fit anyone’s fitness level. Private coaching is given to teach new members the fundamentals until they are ready to progress. For most CrossFitters, every workout is a new challenge. At the beginning of each week Pruni and his team devise a unique Workout of the Day for each day of the week. Each workout is unique, especially when you have Pruni developing his own. One of his favorites is one he created himself called, PMS BAPS: P for pushups, M for mountain climbers, S for sit-ups, B for burpees, A for air squats, P for press squats and S for side planks. These movements help re-instill the idea of functional training because bending, squatting and lunging are movements people do daily. Pruni emphasized the importance of having a plan through his acronym MOVE: Motivate, Organize, Visualize, and Execute. “If you move better, you’ll feel better and be better,” Pruni said. “If you push yourself, you can be the best you can be at any stage of life.” This speaks true of Pruni’s life as he is currently submitting material to compete on NBC’s hit show, American Ninja Warrior (ANW). Pruni was chosen to compete on Season 5 and 6 of ANW and is excited to be trying out again for Season 7.
“I don’t get nervous when I get up to the block to start,” Pruni said. “I love the camera, the crowd, and the competition the show encompasses.” ANW is a spin-off of Sasuke, or Japan’s Ninja Warrior, First aired in December 2009, the heart-racing series follows competitors as they tackle difficult obstacle courses in qualifying and final rounds in various cities around the US. If they prove they are the best, they attend the national final round in Las Vegas where they perform on a four-stage obstacle course modeled after Mt. Midoriyama. Over 10,000 applications were submitted for Season 6, and Pruni was one of 600 to be selected to compete in Miami. Sadly, he did not make it to Las Vegas, but has been training relentlessly and has high hopes for the upcoming season. “Everyone has the will to win, but you have to have the will to prepare to win,” Pruni said. “That’s what makes a champion.” It was on completing his first season on ANW that Pruni decided to open a CrossFit box that not only housed CrossFit training, but also a full three-stage Ninja Warrior obstacle course. After finding a big enough space, it took only
five weeks to build the equipment necessary for training, during which time Pruni also developed a program called NinjaKour, which embraces gymnastics, parkour, and rock climbing, and provides Ninja Warriors from all over the world a to train for competition. Pruni and his team are in the process of building a fourth obstacle to complete the course. When Pruni isn’t breaking a sweat at the gym or seeing patients at his Chiropractic Medicine office, he can be found spending time with his family. CrossFit Lilburn offers a variety of packages and programs. CrossFit Lilburn is located at 4153 Lawrenceville Hwy Suite 13 in Lilburn in the back of the Beaver Ruin Village Shopping Center. One Man’s Opinion @RyanSauers
Welcome to the December 2014 edition of Our Town. This month’s cover story is CrossFit Lilburn, run by chiropractor and American Ninja Warrior, Dr. Robert Pruni. You will enjoy this story in addition to many others. Our new website is up at OurTownGwinnett.com. We still have more to do, but we are proud of what we have done so far. We could not have done this without my friend, Finley Williamson IV. I encourage you to contact his company, Vortext Marketing. You will find their ad in this issue. Our Town’s online audience continues to grow as people read via computer, tablet, and/ or phone. Please visit the online version at OurTownMagOnline.com, or our social sites at Facebook.com/OurTownGwinnett and/or Twitter.com/OurTownGwinnett to see more. A second edition of Our Town will begin in early 2015 and will focus on a new geographical area. This is quite exciting, and we look forward to this expansion. Our Town continues to provide quality content people want to read. We integrate online, print, and social media so readers can choose how they want to “consume the content” of Our Town. Thus, the choice is not a “print only” vs. “online only” option. In contrast, readers get both versions and social media news as well. In addition to the high quantity of mailed copies sent out each month, Our Town samples are placed in display shelves in strategic locations ranging from Stone Mountain to Loganville. We stay focused on our mission of providing positive family and community news each month. Finally, I want to thank our great team. Thanks to our feature writers: Stacye Carroll, Heidi Campbell, Rachael Brice, and new sportswriter Perry Rosenbaum. Kudos to our cover photographer Ron Kerr, creative director Elsie Olson, and editor Catherine Osornio. If I did not name you – you know who you are – a special thanks to you as well. I wish you a safe and blessed holiday season and New Year. Until next year and as always: this is my town, your town, Our Town!

Chaplain’s Corner: Good News!
Want to change in 2015? Mention this ad for discount pricing (or package).
By Paul Ballard Luke 2:10-11 reads: “And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” This verse reminds me of a little boy who was to play an angel in a church Christmas pageant. At a given time he was supposed to say, “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.” He practiced day after day until he had his line down pat. On the night of the performance, he had a bad case of stage fright. He jumped out onto the platform to say his line, but the words wouldn’t come. Finally, after a moment of silence that seemed like an eternity, he blurted out, “Boy, do I have some good news to tell you!” My friend, that is the message of Christmas. It is the good news that God, through Jesus, has broken into this fractured, chaotic, and messed up world, and has shattered Satan’s grip on people. The shalom (peace and wholeness) that existed before sin entered the world is now being restored by the Creator. The gospel of Jesus Christ is an announcement about certain historical events. At its core, then, Christianity is not a resource for spirituality, religion, and morality, but a dramatic story which at the heart is the claim that Jesus was crucified for our sins, rose from the grave, and is coming back. Jesus did not come to make bad people good, but to make dead people alive. Only the radical news about Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection can transform us from the inside out. Only the gospel can create such a radical re-evaluation of our core identity, making Jesus the greatest treasure in our lives. The young boy was right! Jesus has come to reconcile sinful, broken, hurting, and messed up people to their Heavenly Father. Now, that’s good news! Mountain Park First Baptist Church, www.mpfbc.org

It’s that time of year when almost anything can, and will, be used as a metaphor for college football. Learning that Chris Whitlock left South Carolina for Georgia, where he met Floridian Heather Cheshire, immediately brought to mind those great SEC rivalries. Sports metaphors are particularly appropriate in this case. Chris and Heather Whitlock, along with their children, Christopher, Corey, and Hannah, have participated in all levels of sports in the Lilburn area for over 15 years. Chris Whitlock became a fixture at Mountain Park Park where, in addition to basketball, he coached both recreational and travel baseball. When asked, “Why baseball?” Chris described himself as an “eager Dad.” “It started with soccer,” he explained, “and then moved on to T-ball.” Before he knew it, he was coaching all three Whitlock children. “It was not unusual for us to have three different games going on three different fields. I’d take off one jersey and put on another on the way to the next game.” As if that wasn’t enough, Chris served as president of the Mountain Park Athletic Association for nine years and is currently president of the Parkview Dugout Club. Heather served as an officer in the PTSA while her children attended elementary and middle school, and continues to volunteer with the organization at Parkview. She also manages concessions for the Parkview Dugout Club and somehow still finds time for tennis. She and Chris enjoy college football, and hold season tickets for both their alma maters. The Whitlocks say they were most influenced by their parents and hope they have the same effect on their own children, as well as their children’s friends and teammates.

Memories By Jane Bishop The human brain is a fascinating creation! “The (roughly) three-pound super computer inside your skull simultaneously processes facts and faces, stores memories, sweeps out toxins, controls movement and speech and makes decisions” (Theresa Fisher). Our super computer is more powerful than the best man-made computer and has almost limitless storage capacity. Within this storage is an archive of amazing memories that may have been forgotten. Memory is defined by the Oxford Dictionaries as the “faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information.” At this time of year, the plethora of holiday reminders may trigger the brain to a default mode of stored information marked by chaos and “what if.” The brain often focuses on the “what if” from a negative perspective and from the chaos of the season because of perceived expectations. Being drawn solely into this archived memory can stifle living4ward for the holidays. To counterbalance that default mode, why not perform an archive retrieval of positive memories? Amazing facts and faces that have been filed away might be rediscovered. In the classic song The Way We Were, memories, negative and positive, were highlighted. “Memories light the corners of my mind.” “Scattered pictures. What’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget.” “It’s the laughter we will remember.” Memories create our mental scrapbooks from life experiences. After losing my brother Jim in September, I often visit my mental scrapbook of him. These memories continue to warm my heart, lighten my grief, and feed my soul with laughter. I invite you to live4ward this holiday season by recalling memories that light up the corners of your mind. Live4ward by making memories and creating new pages in your mental scrapbooks. Remember, memories can’t be bought, burned or stolen. Use your super computer brain to create and store new memories today. Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. Wouldn’t It Be Nice
A Day of ...
By Jeff Hayes The first line of a classic song goes, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older, then we wouldn’t have to wait so long.” Here are a few nice things to think about: Wouldn’t it be nice, if we could elect presidents who were neither Republican nor Democrat? Perhaps then they could concentrate on doing what is best for the American people, and what is right for the country. Wouldn’t it be nice, if there were term limits, so that the members of Congress could spend more time running the country, and less time running for re-election? Wouldn’t it be nice, if our government did not think it was OK to lie to us because the end justifies the means? Wouldn’t it be nice, if our welfare system actually gave a hand up to those less fortunate, instead of a handout? Wouldn’t it be nice, if we were all just Americans, and weren’t classified by our color, race, religion, or country of origin? Wouldn’t it be nice, if we had an energy policy that would use our resources, create jobs, and free us from enriching our enemies? Wouldn’t it be nice, if we had a strong and intimidating military? Then we would never have to actually drop bombs or fire missiles. Wouldn’t it be nice, if we had a tax system that would free us from the IRS? Wouldn’t it be nice, if we had a healthcare system that we could all understand, and where doctors made the decisions? Wouldn’t it be nice, if we had a media that always gave us honest and unbiased factual information? Perhaps those of us who are actually old enough to remember that song wish we could change the words to, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were younger, with the time to right all that is wrong?” Jeff Hayes is president of Serenity Financial and Insurance, Inc. By Jamey Toney Most of us love the wonderful, fragrant smell of a fresh-cut Christmas tree. Twinkling lights and colorful decorations add the final touches to these dark green needles. But Christmas trees can be dangerous. It can be completely engulfed by flame in less than 40 seconds. According to the National Fire Protection Association, from 2005 – 2009 about 240 Christmas trees in the United States caught fire each year. These fires caused an average of 13 deaths, 27 injuries, and $16.7 million in property damage. To help keep you and your family safe, follow these Christmas tree safety tips. Make Sure it’s Fresh • Buy a locally-grown tree, as transported trees have been cut earlier and are more likely to be dry. • Break a few needles. They should be fragrant when crushed, as well as flexible, and moist. • Check the color. Some trees are sprayed with a blue-green dye. Though harmless, the paint may be hiding a dry tree. • Shake the tree. If green needles fall off, then the tree is dry. Display it Safely • Keep the tree in a cool room and it will stay fresh longer. • Don’t put the tree near a heat source as it can dry out or even ignite. • Keep the tree away from all doors as a tree could block escape routes in case of a fire. • Dispose of your tree as soon as possible after Christmas. And, don’t burn it in the fireplace as trees burn quickly, which could start a fire. Decorate Smart • Avoid using older bulbs, which burn hot and can dry out the tree. • Don’t use lights with frayed cords and check all lights to ensure they are in good condition. • Always switch off tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep and also avoid overloading electrical cords. • Have a safe and happy holiday season! 2015 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year: Dr. Sharon Smith By Heidi Campbell
Happy ‘Days’ Are Here Again! Patty and Steve Day know a great home when they see one. After all, they’ve moved 36 times, most recently to Olde Town Grayson. Olde Town Grayson offered the no-maintenance lifestyle the Days were looking for. They chose a roomy 3-bedroom villa, which was elegantly decorated by Patty, an accomplished interior designer.
On November 11, Dr. Sharon Smith sat eagerly in the audience at the Gwinnett Civic Center, awaiting the announcement of who would be named the 2015 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year. Her husband, David Smith, Parkview High’s principal, was there in support, as well as her principal, her parents, her ninety-year-old grandmother, and her younger sister, Julie. She was thrilled when she was awarded the Elementary Teacher of the Year (TOTY). Smith recalls, “As I was still processing that, Mr. Wilbanks announced that I was the overall winner for the Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year. At that point, I just kept thinking ‘Oh my GOSH! It is me!’” Smith, a first and second grade gifted teacher at Brookwood Elementary, became the school’s TOTY in September. Her county-level application was followed by a semi-final process including a panel interview and classroom observations. She said, “It’s an incredibly exciting process in which teachers can reflect upon themselves as teachers – their successes, practices, beliefs, and how they can continue to contribute to education in a positive manner.” Dr. Smith has shared her positive, energetic spirit with Brookwood Elementary for eight years. She is the co-chair of the school’s Relay for Life team, collaborates with the cluster Vertical Team, works with literacy at the school, cluster, and county level, and is an instructor at the cluster’s gifted summer camp. Part of her success as a teacher, Smith says, comes from keeping the focus on her students. “I’ve learned that if I can step back each day and truly reflect on the teaching and learning that occurred, then I can make the necessary adjustments to best meet the needs of each student.” Aside from her professional responsibilities, Smith makes time for her community as the Vacation Bible School director at Trinity Lutheran where she has taught Sunday school for the past seven years. She has also been team mom and assistant coach for some of the athletic teams of her three sons. She has, most recently, become an officer on the Cross Country and Track Booster Club at Brookwood High School. Her next step is to complete the application for the state competition, which is due December 5th. Ten finalists will be announced in March, and the winner will be announced later in the spring. She looks forward to her new responsibilities and says, “Being chosen to represent this ‘family,’ the same one that I was educated in from 1st-12th grade, and the only system I’ve ever taught in, is an exceptionally extraordinary opportunity!”

Rediscover Your Go
with the latest in knee replacement technologies The LEGION™ Primary Knee System with VERILAST™ Technology has been lab tested for 30 simulated years of wear performance. This is more than twice as long as other knee replacements. It’s biocompatible and lighter weight – weighing 20% less than traditional knee technology. And it substantially reduces wear – a leading cause of knee replacement failure. VISIONAIRE™ Patient Matched Technology, is an innovative new procedure that uses your MRI and X-Ray images to create specialized surgical instruments built just for you and your knee implant. It’s time to put a stop to your chronic knee pain. Ask for the latest in knee replacement technologies.
Go to RediscoverYourGo.com today to find a surgeon who specializes in these technologies Based on laboratory wear simulation testing, the LEGION Primary Knee System with VERILAST Technology is expected to provide wear performance sufficient for 30 years of actual use under typical conditions. The results of laboratory wear simulation testing have not been proven to predict actual joint durability and performance in people. A reduction in wear alone may not result in improved joint durability and performance because other factors, such as bone structure, can affect joint durability and performance and cause medical conditions that may result in the need for additional surgery. These other factors were not studied as part of the testing. There are potential risks with knee replacement surgery such as loosening, fracture, dislocation, wear and infection that may result in the need for additional surgery. Do not perform high impact activities such as running and jumping unless your surgeon tells you the bone has healed and these activities are acceptable. Early device failure, breakage or loosening may occur if you do not follow your surgeon’s limitations on activity level. Early failure can happen if you do not guard your knee joint from overloading due to activity level, failure to control body weight or accidents such as falls. Knee replacement surgery is intended to relieve knee pain and improve knee functions. Talk to your doctor to determine what treatment may be best for you.
