o r d y , Lordy… look who’s Thirty! “The Nutcracker” will be celebrating 30 years of enchanting Atlanta audiences and of captivating the dreams of little girls. Considered one of Atlanta’s most popular productions, it’s brought to life by the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. The Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is one of the finest preprofessional companies and non-profit dance schools in the region, propelling an impressive number of young artists to professional companies and dance careers around the world. Located in the Atlanta Metro Area’s northeast suburb of Snellville, Georgia; Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is not only changing lives, it’s making elusive dreams come true. Founded in 1977, GBT’s board of directors is composed of parents, business executives, city leaders and friends of the ballet. GBT is honored to be a part of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, (SERBA) a member of the national organization Regional Dance America. The Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is one of only 12 SERBA Honor Companies. This honor distinction is the highest accolade given to regional ballet companies, and to be recognized as an Honor Company demonstrates consistent excellence in performance and training. Their éclat is evident through the effortless performances of not only the current company dancers but alumni as well. The fresh young faces that comprise the company members are a force to be reckoned with, tackling

The GBT School welcomes dancers of all ages and levels; its motto of “Nurturing Young Dancers”, is demonstrated throughout their teaching philosophy which involves the whole dancer. Having a non-profit status allows GBT to place an emphasis on the individual dancer as opposed to enrolling large amounts of students. The school concentrates on classical ballet but other forms of dance are also encouraged and offered. Classes in tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop are available at the appropriate age and levels of development. Their have been many students that have achieved successful careers and GBT prides itself in offering this success formula to all who participate. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s passion for dance extends far beyond the school walls and that is the reason for its community outreach program. The GBT dancers have performed in festivals such as Barefoot in the Park and performed previews of the Nutcracker at the Webb Gin Avenue, Discover Mills Shopping Center and for senior and rehabilitation centers. GBT believes in giving back; therefore, it has launched the GBT scholarship program. This successful program has grown to approximately 20 scholarship children taking classes full time as well as the adoption of nearby Shiloh Elementary School. Hundreds of children are being taught and touched by the arts as a result of this program. These scholarship students get to participate in the spring recital and the Nutcracker.

performances for groups that could not otherwise afford to purchase a large block of tickets”. GBT considers their community enrichment performances to be the primary means by which diverse audiences are exposed often for the first time to fine ballet and classical music. Public and private schools, home-schoolers, preschools, day care centers, senior citizens, churches, scouting organizations, and the developmentally disabled are the main groups targeted for inclusion at these specially priced shows. GBT has also worked with Atlanta’s Special Audiences, distributing tickets to underserved populations. GBT has also distributed tickets to numerous local civic, senior, and child services groups. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is a community gem that has cultivated dancers and audiences alike. The detailed productions and the energy of the live performances have been ingrained in the community. If your community group would like to attend one of GBT’s community enrichment performances, contact us at 770-978-0188.

The GBT outreach program doesn’t only reach students it’s reaching out to the audience as well. “Each time Gwinnett Ballet Theatre stages a production, we designate a number of performances as specially priced community enrichment

FINANCE Halcyon Times– Helping you enjoy smooth financial sailing.

Looking Ahead By Glenton Ashby

T

hanksgiving is past. Christmas is coming, with New Year’s right behind.

We end another year with our financial and economic lives and those of our national, state and local governments still in sad shape and much of the rest of world in economic turmoil. Even in America’s continuing “bad times” we continue to be in a very good situation compared to most of the rest of the world. However, we cannot take things for granted. We are not entitled to anything from anyone financially speaking. Prudence is essential. That is, we have to be careful and thoughtful on a continuous basis about our finances. Some things to consider: As you wrap up the year, give some thought to possible year-end tax moves that might be beneficial when you file your 2011 tax return in 2012. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and do not think you will have used up your 2011 funds by December, plan to use the funds in the first two months of 2012 rather than lose that money. If you read this article before your open enrollment period at work is over, consider whether a high-deductible health plan with a Health Savings Account (HSA) would be beneficial to you. There are recently announced “enhancements” to HARP (Home Affordable Refinance Program) intended to help underwater homeowners take advantage of low mortgage rates. This is something to take a look at if your mortgage is underwater but you would otherwise be able to refinance to take advantage of the rock-bottom mortgage rates. One of the main qualifiers to pay attention to is that the program is for homeowners whose mortgages were acquired by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac BEFORE June 2009. The program is targeted to homeowners who are current on their mortgage payments and whose home value is less than their current mortgage balance. Ideally, you would be able to refinance through your current mortgage holder and an appraisal would not necessarily be required. The idea is to allow refinancing in spite of the property value being less than the mortgage balance. If you qualify and your bank is willing to work with you, you may be able to get the double benefit of refinancing to a much lower interest rate AND to a shorter mortgage term. If the remaining life on your existing mortgage is over 25 years, give serious consideration to a 15- or 20-year mortgage, if possible. Even a 25-year mortgage may be worth considering if it will shorten the length of time you will have a mortgage. The official guidelines on the HARP changes should be available on or after November 15. I wish you and yours a “Merry Christmas” and safe and smooth financial sailing in 2012. Feedback and topic suggestions are welcome – email HalcyonTimes@HalcyonFP.com, or comment at www. HalcyonFP.com/halcyon-times. Tweet @halcyonplanning. FREE Job Search Help By Alicia Philipp

T

here are m a n y ways to go about a job search. Networking is considered one of the most effective ways to find your next job. For some people, there may be professional or trade associations that provide some networking opportunities. For all people, regardless of your career area, there are some very helpful FREE resources in our own community that you can utilize in your job search, yet many people I talk with are not aware of these resources. Many people think of the Department of Labor as the place to register for unemployment financial assistance if you have lost your job, but it is much more than that. Even if you do not qualify for unemployment money, you can still use the free resources of the Department of Labor. They have workshops, job search resources, help with resumes & interviews, job clubs, job listings and much more. The Gwinnett office is located in Norcross at 2211 Beaver Ruin Rd., Suite 160. A number of local churches have developed Job Search/ Career Ministries. The people who put these together offer their services as a way to give of their time and talents to the general community. You do not need to be a member of that church or even to any religious church/denomina-

Page 10

tion to receive their assistance, though realize that meetings might offer a time for prayer. They usually offer a Job Search Networking meeting, once or twice a month, along with resume critiques, networking opportunities, and other assistance depending on the location. It helps to know the schedule of a few of these meeting groups and learn what topics will be covered at their meetings. The meetings usually have a guest speaker, offering advice and information on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, using LinkedIn, networking skills, and other job search topics. Guest speakers are often recruiters, corporate executives, resume writers, career coaches & counselors.

Here are some of the nearby meetings: Job Networking Group – Meeting dates/times

One of the challenges job seekers face is that their whole routine has been changed. Being unemployed can make a person feel very isolated. Regularly attending a job-search networking group can give you a routine, help you stay on task, and provide regular interaction with others which may be missing during a lengthy job search. So if you are unemployed, consider giving one of these groups a try. And if you are already employed, show your gratitude by passing this information on to those friends and family that might benefit from it.

EDUCATION Corner The Gift of Knowledge! By Carol Wood, Founder & CEO, Total Learning Concepts

T

he holidays are approaching and you may be wondering what present to give to your children. It is often difficult to decide what to buy your children as a gift to represent your love and affection for them and one which has long term benefits. What gift can you give your children like this? One answer is to be their primary teacher because education begins with you! As parents we are the first teachers our children ever know. It is up to us to instill in them a desire to and love of learning. Some children are born curious and will ask a zillion questions, whereas others will accept everything around them just as is. My daughter asked me two questions I will never forget! “Mom, how did the little man get in the box?” (When inquiring how the car radio worked). The other question was, “How does my hair stay on? Is it glued onto my head?” Those were two opportunities I had to teach her something at a very early age about herself and the world around her. Anatomy and technology lessons were placed before me, so I gave her the simplest version of an answer possible, one which she could understand. I also remember finding her once with a screw driver in her hand and her rocking chair which she had completely disassembled and in the process of putting back together. Instead of correcting her for making a mess and what looked to be her destroying her chair, I applauded her efforts in disassembly and assembly. I assumed she had seen her dad using the screw driver before and wanted to try it herself! You may be thinking that you do not have the expertise to teach your children. Of course you do! When they ask something you do not know the answer to, look it up together! It is ok to let your children know that you do not know something. A great lesson is to allow them to hear you admit there is something you do not know and then let them see you research for an answer through the library, internet, or through those people you know. When your children observe you taking the time to look for answers, you have taught them that knowledge is worth the effort. Every day there are opportunities to teach your children something interesting and worthwhile. Look around right now as you read this. There is a lesson in anything you can see, smell, or touch! You could teach your children something about art, geometry, chemistry, product production, literature, and reading, just to name a few. If you are at home you can teach them about cooking, gardening, auto mechanics, woodworking, technology, and home construction. Allow your children to follow you around the house and teach them as you work. Take them with you with you purchase or lease a car or house. Yes, it will slow you down a bit and could be potentially distracting, but you are preparing your children for a life apart from you. After all, isn’t our goal as parents to raise independent, self-reliant adults who are knowledgeable, capable and competent and also emotionally healthy and whole?

Teaching your children takes energy, time, and a willingness to share yourself and what you know or do not know with them. Therefore, you must ask yourself if you are willing to give of yourself and be your children’s primary teacher. Your children are worth every minute you give to them. Time goes fast and children grow up quickly! Seize the opportunities when they present themselves. Other simple ways to teach your children are: Answer your children’s questions with questions. Probe them to think and problem solve. This will build critical thinking skills Have daily reading time together. Read out loud to them so they can learn about reading rate, rhythm, and enunciation. Have them take turns to read to you. Do not be a drill sergeant; rather let them ask you for help if they stumble over a word. Applaud their willingness and effort. You do not want them to lose their motivation or desire to read because reading is the core of all future learning. Take your children on family field trips within your own city and talk to them as you tour about everything they are seeing for the first time. Allow them to ask you questions and also to teach you what they know (even if you already know it). Provide music lessons of some sort while young, such as piano, trumpet, violin, or voice. If you can not afford lessons, buy a book that allows for self teaching, such as a Mel Bay Guitar book or enroll your children in your church or local choir if one is available. Have your young children attend local library activities for reading, writing, and literature enrichment. Encourage your children to draw and paint. n October, my son was diagnosed with Strep Throat. Three days after taking antibiotics, my poor baby was still stuffy and suffering. He was definitely going to need a stronger prescription to get through this one. A nurse at my studio, Rose McKeever, suggested he flush his nose with a Neti Pot to offer some relief while we waited for his new prescription to work. In Yoga, it is recommended to cleanse the nasal passages daily by pouring water into one nostril and allowing the natural process of gravity to pull the water around the septum and empty from the opposite nostril. A small pot – Neti Pot - with a special spout designed to fit snugly into the nostril allows the water to flow without dripping. I had never tried it before, but had heard how wonderful it is for cleansing and soothing the nasal passages during seasons of dry air. I decided to set an example for my younger child (who was not going to be as excited about nasal flushing as I was) and use the Neti Pot while he used the nasal flush. I purchased the items and excitedly explained what we were going to do. I put a packet of saline mixture into the pot and filled it with 8 ounces of warm water. My son looked skeptically at both the Neti pot and me. When I was ready, I said, “Okay, watch me. I’m going to pour this water into my nostril and it’s going to come out the other side. Easy Peasy. When I’m done, you try yours in one nostril.” I smiled. He didn’t smile back. I tilted my head forward and to the left then put the spout of the pot into my right nostril, just like the instructions indicated. We both held our breath and waited. Seconds later, I felt a hot, burning sensation traveling up into my forehead. I stopped and waited. The burning only got worse as my eyes turned bloodshot red and began to water. Seconds later, my son began whimpering. “Don’t make me do it, Mom…” “Don’t worry Baby,” I mumbled through the pain. “Mommy just used water that was a little too hot.” I emptied the pot, put in a new packet of saline mix, and added cooler water to the mixture. I took a deep breath and tried again. This time, the painful sensation didn’t burn, but it hurt nonetheless. I sat down and waited for the pain to subside in my forehead as my son looked even more concerned than before. Sigh. We switched gears and tried his nasal flush. It worked without a hitch. And suddenly he was the expert on what I was doing wrong. “Mom, you’re tilting your forehead too far forward. Don’t pour so much water at one time. Breathe through your mouth. Wait for it… Look! You did it!” Sure enough, he was right. So much for my supporting and coaching him. I have been using the Neti Pot on a regular basis now that the heat is drying the air in our house, and it’s an easy and quick process. Nasal irrigation is good for those suffering with nasal dryness, sinus infections or congestion, or seasonal allergies. If you’re interested in trying the Neti Pot, you can get a low cost plastic one at any local pharmacy, discount or drug store along with the saline mixtures. Try it – you might be surprised with the results.

nthony Rodriguez is back for a 5th year with his compelling solo performance of the holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Not unlike the way Charles Dickens performed his story in Victorian England, Mr. Rodriguez focuses on the classic art of storytelling. Using his voice and mannerisms, Rodriguez brings life to Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley and the remarkable ghosts found in the greatest Christmas story of all time. The exhilarating one-man Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol returns for a limited 3-week engagement December 1 – 18, 2011. Nestled in the intimate 80-seat Gwinnett Federal Credit Union Studio, the theatre is transformed to make you feel Mr. Dickens has personally invited you into his parlor. Although a few amazing theatrical effects have been added, this rendition captures the true spirit of Christmas - the joy of giving. The story is adapted for the stage and directed by Tony Brown , who also directed last season’s heart-warming comedy hit, Over the River and Through the Woods. “Although it is a daunting task taking on this production, it inspires me the entire holiday season,” explains Aurora Theatre ’s Producing Artistic Director Anthony Rodriguez. “This year, I get to do this show for Gwinnett County students in a series of weekday matinees. My gift to the students will be similar to Scrooge’s revelation - the greatest gift we can receive is the joy of giving.” Programming in Aurora Theatre ’s Gwinnett Federal Credit Union Studio is possible through generous support from Georgia Gwinnett College and the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund.

Counselor’s Corner True Holiday Giving By Susan Cadley

“Reach out and touch, somebody’s hand. Make this world a better place, if you can.” ~Ashford & Simpson

T

he holiday ads have begun with the focus being on families gathering together. There’s joyous laughter and a feeling of warmth in these celebratory depictions of the holidays. And yet, for many people this time of year can be very difficult, especially for those in transition. Life doesn’t stop just because the holidays arrive. People are experiencing job losses, divorce, illness, being alone and single, or grieving the loss of a loved one. If you find yourself in transition or alone at this time of year, it’s important for you to provide yourself with what I call “excellent self care.” Here are some ideas to support you during this time: •

New tradition – if your circumstances have changed, start planning now on how you’ll spend the holiday. Don’t wait until the day arrives to plan as this can leave you feeling uncared for, by you. Volunteer – if you are alone, giving to others can

• •

help you focus off of your circumstances for a while. Connect – find ways to join in to activities taking place at churches, your neighborhood, or town. Making plans will give you something to look forward to. Honor your feelings – if you are not feeling happy this holiday, find a trusted friend, counselor or minister to support you during this time. Talking, being heard and understood can assist you in moving the energy heavy emotions can bring.

If you do not find yourself in transition, consider sharing the true meaning of giving this year. Pay attention and notice people that are not included in your inside circle of giving. If you identify a need, invite someone who’s alone to join you in your holiday tradition. Or offer a supportive ear to someone that is hurting. If you have a home, love of family and friends, income and a way to celebrate, you are blessed! Stretch yourself. Share your blessings and offer to give outside your normal channels. Your heart will expand and your soul will soar as

you offer the deep gift of caring to others. Wishing you an excellent self care holiday season! PETS OF THE MONTH Louie:

Louie is 1yr old Bichon- Frise/Poodle mix and he’s a wonderful dog. He’s always happy and ready to go out and take long walks and play. He has been enjoying the fall leaves as he chases them around. Louie was adopted from a family that moved to Los Angeles to a condo where pets were not allowed. We took him and fell in love at first sight. He’s quiet, loves people and other dogs. The thing he loves the most is car rides and being with his new loving family!

Dogs and the Holidays By Cathy Bruce, CPDT-KA/ Canine Country Academy LLC

s I sat down to write out some important tips to remember for your dog’s safety during the holidays, I was reminded of the first Christmas I spent with my now 13 year old Shih Tzu named Minnie. My husband and I were living in a New York City apartment at the time and Minnie was about five months old. We were just starting to let her be free in the apartment for brief periods of time while we ran to the grocery store or on errands. That particular weekend we had just put up our Christmas tree chock full of decorations and put a bunch of wrapped presents under the tree. In hindsight, I think my puppy probably thought she had hit the “Disney World” jackpot after my husband and I left the apartment for thirty minutes! We returned later to find ten presents completely ripped open and wrapping paper strewn all over the floor. Thankfully we had thought to place all the shiny tree decorations high enough that Minnie could not reach those too! So for all the new puppy or dog owners out there, please consider a few safety tips for the holidays:

• •

• • •

Confine your puppy to a crate or small clutter free area if unsupervised Give your puppy a nice chew toy such as a peanut butter stuffed Kong or treat stuffed Twist and Treat so they have something to work on when you are not able to be with them (it is important that puppies have appropriate things to chew on) Remember: anything new in your house (like a Christmas tree or table decorations) is going to be really interesting to your puppy so try and keep them out of reach as much as possible if you do not want them investigated or potentially chewed on During the holidays, do not give your puppies or dogs access to potpourri which can be toxic Watch the excess food! We all want our dogs to enjoy the holidays with us, but do not overfeed them with too many leftovers from the holiday dinner; make sure they still get their primary nutrients from their main food source Be mindful of your dog’s stress level. Just as the holidays can be stressful for humans with extra family or friends visiting or children being off school, your dogs or puppies can experience stress as well with a change up in their normal routine. Make sure they are getting plenty of down time and have their own “chill out” space If car traveling with your dog or puppy during the holidays, make sure you consider their safety in the car. Utilize a hard sided or wire crate for your pet when driving or put them in a dog safe car restraint harness

SEND IN YOUR PET FOR “PET OF THE MONTH! Send to: PO BOX 644 Snellville, GA 30078 or life@ourtownmag.org

Please remember to keep your dog’s safety during the holidays a priority with these simple tips above. Happy Holidays!

SKIN CARE An Instant Way to Look Younger, Better

Hanging on to old makeup practices can age and harshen Chrissy Thomas, RN, BSN Most little girls can’t wait to explore their moms’ makeup drawer and play dress-up with bold lipsticks and eye shadows. As they approach puberty, girls believe a trip to the makeup counter is a rite of passage. Makeup continues to be an important part of a woman’s wardrobe throughout adulthood. But, things change as life advances, and older women, holding onto the same ways as their earlier years, can make mistakes in their appearance. What once might have enhanced their looks ends up aging them – the opposite of what they’re trying to achieve.

ted, which makes you look harsher and ages you.” Martinez should know. An expert hair and makeup artist, she’s worked on professional photo shoots, commercial and video production, print advertising and fashion editorials. First and foremost for great-looking complexions is a solid skincare regime, she advises. “Skincare preparation is key. Healthy, glowing skin is the perfect canvas; that’s where makeup starts, regardless of your age.” Next, is understanding your skin tone, whether warm or cool. Unfortunately, most women aren’t aware of their skin tone, and, consequently, select the wrong foundation colors for their face. “The right color is essential to accentuating your natural beauty,” she says. Adding to this, women’s overall coloring – lips, hair and complexion –fades with age. Therefore, it’s important to avoid dark, more dramatic colors that younger women can get away with.

“Older women need to pay particular attention to their skincare regime and understand the correct color choices and application techniques specific to their age, as this changes over time,” explains, Sona Martinez, a licensed master cosmetologist for About Face Skin Care.

“Color choice is huge,” she says. “For older women, less is better with makeup colors. Heavy eye colors and foundations age you, as do unflattering colors. And the wrong color even accentuates imperfections.”

“As we age, skin becomes drier and loses its elasticity, causing sagging,” she says. “And when skin sags, if you don’t apply makeup correctly, it falls into the creases and becomes mat-

Martinez says the goal with older, mature skin is to enhance a woman’s best features -- whether it’s eyes or lips –in a natural way by selecting colors that are flattering to their complex-

ion. “Makeup needs to look natural and soft to bring out your natural radiance,” she says. In addition to the right color choice, application technique is also vital. Both can be learned from a makeup professional, who provides hands-on, personalized consultation, designed to specifically compliment a woman’s best features. Mature women should also update the type of makeup they wear. For example, older women should choose more hydrating formulas for their face and lips, since matte settles into the creases, creating an aged look. Shimmery lipgloss should also be avoided. Makeup comprised of pure, natural minerals, such as Youngblood, provides weightless coverage and allows the skin to breathe. Youngblood also contains titanium dioxide for sun protection. Whereas, over-the-counter brands are loaded with glycerin and fillers, giving a heavy look and feel. “Just a few mistakes can have a major impact on how you look,” says Martinez. “At the same time, the correct color and right application can reduce your age appearance by eight to ten years.” For a custom makeover or color matching with Sona Martinez, please call About Face Skin Care at 770-935-3223.
