On the Cover: Providence Christian Academy Offers Big School Opportunities in a Small, Family-Oriented School Setting By Heidi Campbell Curio cases bursting with artwork, memorabilia, trophies, and awards line the Providence Christian Academy main lobby, painting an accurate landscape of a school that is grounded in faith, rich in activities, competitive in athletics, and rigorous in academics. Head of School Jim Vaught says, “I have served at Providence Christian Academy since the school opened in 1991. I had the privilege of working from the beginning with the group of families who had the vision of starting a school in Gwinnett County.” This vision became a reality with remarkable speed. Planning began in the spring of 1991, and, by that fall, Providence’s doors opened to 354 students in what was once Lilburn’s Greenhill Shopping Center. “The school was named Providence because God provided so amazingly in such a short amount of time,” says Stephen Daniels, the school’s director of communications. Now serving more than 650 students in grades K-12, Providence Christian Academy has been voted the “Best Private High School” by Inside Gwinnett magazine for the past three years. Daniels, who is a graduate of Providence
and has all three of his children enrolled in the school, appreciates the Christian spirituality that is woven into the core of each day, as well as the fact that the school offers all the programs of a larger school while still maintaining a “small school” feel. “We really are,” he reveals, “the premium, mid-size Christian school in Atlanta.” The school offers both athletic and fine arts opportunities for students. An active drama program, most recently performing Beauty and the Beast, offers opportunities at all levels. This fall, the school added a high school drum line to entertain the “Storm” football fans. Athletes, including graduate Collin McHugh (who now pitches for the Houston Astros), thrive in the school’s programs that include fourteen varsity level teams. Academically, the school focuses on rigor and results, with faith, life, and learning at the core. They not only provide every high school student with an iPad, but they also have a growing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program, with plans to include a bio-medical component and extend to the elementary school in the fall of 2015. Aside from numerous AP course offerings at the high school level for the advanced
students, the school also provides programs to help prepare the younger kids for the rigor of high school. “We also offer,” explains Daniels, “a program we call ‘Selective Studies’ for students needing additional academic assistance including organizational skills or extra testing time.” The school is a covenant Christian school, which means that all enrolled students are from professing Christian families. Students study Scripture beginning in the early grades, and by high school they do not only lead the school’s chapel, but seniors and juniors also lead discipleship groups for underclassmen. Beginning in elementary school, all students are encouraged to serve others. Daniels says, “We work really hard to help them understand that there is a need beyond themselves. We want to teach
our kids to be better Christ-followers, and to serve their communities on a deeper level.” This service component is found in all levels
at Providence Christian Academy. The entire school participates in a yearly canned food drive which has donated tens of thousands of cans to the Lilburn and Lawrenceville Continued on page 10

@RyanSauers
Happy February, Gwinnett. With Valentine’s Day on the way, it’s time to just say it. It is the month guys fret over and ladies love. I am kidding. However, in all seriousness, I want to wish my wife Lara Sauers a happy 18th anniversary. It has been a great journey with you and I could not do any of this without you. On another note, I want to wish my mother a wonderful 70th birthday. This month we launched our second, sister, edition of Our Town. It will focus on Grayson, Loganville, and surrounding areas. We are excited about this expansion and sharing all that Our Town has to offer with a new community as it has done here for over ten years. In this February edition, we have a super cover story on Providence Christian Academy. We also have great stories on three generations of Dr. Jove’s, “catching up with” About Face Skin Care, “sports talk” with Parkview soccer, and much more. Our Town’s overall readership grows each month. This is through our high quantity of copies mailed to select homes, additional copies distributed in our display shelves in strategic areas in the community, our online version which is growing exponentially, and our heavily engaged social media audience who stay connected each month. Please visit the online version at OurTownMagOnline.com, or our social sites at Facebook.com/OurTownGwinnett and Twitter. com/OurTownGwinnett, to stay connected. Our updated website, housed at OurTownGwinnett. com is now allowing specific banner advertisements on it and our subscription service is up and running. By the way, stay tuned for the QR code and video. Our Town continues to provide a high-end quality printed product (gloss and unique size) with content people want to read. We integrate online, print, and digital media so you can choose how you “consume the content” we offer. Finally, I ask that you support our advertising partners who invest, believe in, and support this community. Please consider where you spend your money and choose an Our Town partner. Thank you for doing this. Here’s to a great second month of the year, and as always: this is my town, your town, Our Town!

Lisa Kotter describes her husband, Adam, as a “serial entrepreneur.” He is founder and president of The Kotter Group, a company that provides IT solutions to insurance agencies. In the seventeen years since he established the company, Adam has started several other businesses including a laundry service, a marketing firm, and an online insurance company. He even tried his hand at laser tag. According to Lisa, Adam sees how something is done and thinks, “I could do that better.” Last June the Kotters opened Ready to Go Pizza in Decatur. This month, they open Stone Creek Pizza and Frozen Yogurt in Lilburn at the corner of Lilburn Stone Mountain and Miller roads. The pricing concept is simple: a large cheese pizza sells for $5.99, and each additional topping is $1.00. The Kotters enlisted the help of certified master chef Derin Moore to design the highest quality, best tasting pizza around. Using state of the art equipment, they can go from dough ball to pizza in a matter of minutes. In addition to wings and twisty bread, Stone Creek Pizza and Frozen Yogurt offers all varieties of pizza, from deep dish to personal-sized, and an array of toppings ranging from Halal-certified meats to fresh spinach. There are cookies and cinna-twists for dessert, as well as twelve varieties of frozen yogurt and sorbets with a choice of toppings. Assisted by local artist Fern Cook of Shady Grove Landscaping, the Kotters have created a “friendly community place where everyone feels comfortable.” The interior resembles an indoor park, complete with a blue sky and waterfall. One wall will be devoted to photos and news of local sports teams. “We want to benefit our community,” says Lisa. Both Kotters graduated from local high schools and are eager to partner with local booster clubs and PTSA groups. Adam Kotter owns Stone Creek Pizza and Frozen Yogurt. Travel Tales: Panama Canal and More!
Continued from page 5
By Pam Walker To get from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean years ago, ships had to circumnavigate all of South America and pass through the Magellan Straits where wave heights could reach twenty feet. It could take weeks to make the journey. Then in the early 1900s, with the help of Teddy Roosevelt and the US government, the famed Panama Canal was constructed. In 1914, the first ship crossed the narrow strait between the two oceans. It is estimated that over thirty-eight ships take this eight to ten hour journey daily. A cruise through the canal and its locks can be an exciting trip. Most cruise ships depart from Miami or Ft Lauderdale with a final stop in San Diego. Cartagena, Colombia, a quaint seaport built as a Spanish fort city in the early 1800s, is an important destination for any cruise. Its cobbled streets lead to historic buildings, a palace, a castle, and the Gold Museum. Cartagena is also a great place to purchase emeralds, with shops around every corner. Since the actual Panama Canal transit takes several hours, there is ample time for side trips while the cruise ship makes its way through the locks. It is impressive to see just how close the actual hulls of the ships are to the sides of the locks. Along the route port visits can be made in Puntarenas or Puerto Limon in Costa Rica, or Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. The winter months in the US are prime times for these cruises. The weather is pleasant and not too hot. So if you have ever dreamed of a historic cruise through one of the great wonders of the world, take time to cruise the Panama Canal. Co-ops. Head of School Vaught says that this “promotion of helping others” happens within the school, as well. “We encourage mentoring relationships between older and younger students,” he explains. “Our high school Connect Group has upperclassmen mentoring underclassmen, and our Buddy Brigade brings pairs of elementary and high school students together throughout the year. Even our second graders are matched with kindergarteners as ‘reading buddies.’” Admissions are currently open for the 2015 – 2016 school year. Tuition, which is competitive with other private schools, can be met through payment plans or need-based financial aid. The school is excited for the completion of their latest building project, the Lussi Athletic Complex, which will provide a multi-purpose field, an eight lane track, tennis courts, and a softball field. Lilburn’s Mayor, Johnny Crist, serves on the Providence Board of Directors, and all eight of his children graduated from Providence. He says, “The worship and connection of the kids

is unbelievable. It’s a school, a church, and a family. It’s a school and it is an academically rigorous one. It’s a church because the kids have constant spiritual encouragement. It is a family in that everyone is engaged in each
other’s lives; if you are going through something, you’ve got the support of 500 families. That is pretty unique!” More information at www.providencechristianacademy.org

Sports Talk with: Coach Judson Hamby of Parkview High’s Girls Soccer Team By Perry Rosenbaum
Happy Valentine’s Day
Chris’
BARBER SHOP
Serving the Lilburn area for over 20 years!
Everybody knows that to be a successful athlete, you must hone your skills and build up the requisite stamina needed to compete. More important, though, is having the mental wherewithal to play a given sport. Young athletes are often taught to “get out of [their] own head,” with a greater importance placed on doing rather than thinking. This usually yields poor results, as displacing emotions can create worse and longer-lasting problems than a broken arm or a shattered knee. Therefore, it behooves a coach to make sure his players are as strong psychologically as they are physically. Judson Hamby, girls soccer coach at Parkview High School, has taken this lesson of mind-overmatter to heart, and has expertly applied it to his coaching style. Hamby is a Douglasville native, having played soccer and basketball at Douglas County High. He had a chance to make the Berry College soccer team as a walk-on, but chose to turn his attention to coaching after completing his undergrad in sports management and attending Berry for his master’s in secondary education. He came to Parkview in 2004, and took over as head coach when Mark Albertus stepped down in 2007. Hamby promptly led the Panthers to three straight championship titles from 2007-2009 – the last one earning him the NSCAA National Coach of the Year award – with 2008 being an undefeated season. He credits the bulk of his success to his tendency to over-prepare. “In some ways, it’s my downfall, but I try to…prepare my team for anything and everything that could happen in a game.” To Hamby, knowledge truly is power. When asked about the biggest influence on the way he coaches, Hamby is hesitant to narrow it down to just one source. “I can’t pinpoint specific people,” he admits, “because I feel like a good coach is always trying to pick up new things or good tips from anyone.” This dissatisfaction with complacency is another testament to the unending drive he possesses and passes down to those under his tutelage. However, he does list Albertus and former athletic director Karl Bostick as crucial architects of Parkview’s sustained excellence in sports. “Bostick knew how to run a program and set the bar high…and Albertus had a huge impact on my early career,” he says. As far as motivation, Hamby says the players normally find it from within, something that no doubt makes his job easier. “It helps that I’m at a school that has a lot of high standards,” he says. “The success this program has had in the past inspires how hard the players work in the present.” Unsurprisingly, the annual match against Brookwood is typically the most hotly anticipated of any given season. “You don’t have to encourage [the team] too much before those games,” he quips with a sly grin. Community outreach is important to Hamby, and his players often teach younger kids at the GSA facility across the street from Parkview’s campus. The team also donates old uniforms to charity, sending them to children in need in third world countries. “It’s neat to see kids in Honduras wearing Panthers gear,” he adds. The season starts on February 5th with a game at St. Pius. This year’s heated contest against the rival Broncos – one you definitely won’t want to miss – will be held on April 17th at Parkview. Further details can be found on the Parkview soccer website. http://www. parkviewsoccer.com/

Getting to know Dr. Jové: Three Generations of Orthopedic Care By Rachael Brice It is rare to find a thriving two-generation family business that works together to ensure its success. However, it is even rarer to find three generations working together, especially in the field of surgery. Three generations of the doctors Jové – Julio, Maurice, and Nathan; grandfather, father, and son – have treated and will continue to treat their patients with the best care, ensuring them a speedy and complete recovery. In 1968, Dr. Julio Jové, M.D. started his orthopaedic practice at the Dekalb Medical Center. Twenty-four years later, his son, Maurice Jové, M.D., joined him in his practice. Dr. Maurice Jové, who graduated from Emory University where he also received his medical training, took over his father’s practice. Dr. Maurice Jové has been providing orthopedic care to patients throughout the Gwinnett area for nearly thirty years. He and his son and newest associate, Dr. Nathan Jové, M.D., take care of Archer, Loganville, Loganville Christian, and Parkview High Schools. You can find them on the sidelines at any of the Friday night football games. Dr. Nathan Jové attended Emory University as an undergraduate and Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his residency at the Detroit Receiving Hospital, essentially the “Grady Hospital of Detroit.” Dr. Nathan Jové will be working with his father in the Loganville, Snellville, and Decatur offices. On Mondays, the two can be found performing surgery together at DeKalb Medical Center. Together, the Drs. Jové have developed different types of treatments for the variety of injuries they see on a daily basis. Some of their specialties include: Sports Medicine, Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee replacement, Trauma, Fracture care, Arthroscopic surgery, Hand Surgery, and Foot and Ankle Surgery. “Our goal is to provide the best care possible so that our patients can resume their normal activity level as soon as possible,” says Dr. Maurice Jové. “We enjoy seeing our patients get back to work and to the sports they love to play, pain free.”

Financial Heart Attack
A Day of ...
By Jeff Hayes
• Innovative Activities • Weekly Outings and Entertainment • Memory Enhancement • Qualified Medical Assistance On-Site
I was told a story about a man whose mother became ill and had to the visit the doctor. As most patients that day had symptoms of the flu, the doctor thought that she, too, had the flu. But she felt that something else was wrong, and she asked to be given an EKG. Immediately after reading the results, her family physician referred her to a cardiologist, who reviewed the results and arranged for a surgeon to see her the next day. Surgery was quickly scheduled to open the blockages in the arteries around her heart. If this lady’s physician had been reluctant to refer her to a specialist for a second opinion, she probably would have had a heart attack, and possibly would have died. How many times has your advisor or stockbroker referred you to a specialist to solve a financial problem that you might be having or are trying to avoid? Let me guess – never! The financial industry does not operate like the medical field. Even though your financial decisions may not be a matter of life or death, your financial health can have a huge impact on your physical wellbeing. Remember, most advisors and stockbrokers only have an obligation to suggest investments that are suitable. There are, however, advisors that are required to maintain what is known as a fiduciary relationship with their clients. This means that they are legally required to not only recommend what is suitable, but they must always act in your best interest. Avoid that financial heart attack! Get a second opinion of your current strategy. Find an advisor who maintains a fiduciary relationship with clients. And, most of all, work with an advisor who listens to you and who explains why his recommendations are in your best interest. Jeff Hayes is the president of Serenity Financial and Insurance, Inc. By Dr. Richard P. Gangwisch, DDS, MAGD, ABGD We added digital x-rays to our office a few years ago. It was a big expense, but it was well worth it. Digital x-rays had been available for a number of years. However, the quality didn’t come close to film. With the recent advances in technology, the number of megapixels available now can match good quality x-ray film. There are two types of digital x-rays: phosphor plates and direct sensors, just like the light sensor in your digital camera. The phosphor plate must be sent through a scanner, which causes a minor delay in viewing the resulting radiograph. The sensor type provides almost instantaneous feedback due to its direct connection to the computer. However, the sensor is quite bulky and can be uncomfortable. We chose the phosphor plate system because its sensor is thinner than regular x-ray film, which allows for the ultimate comfort for our patients. The radiation dosage that is needed to obtain good radiographs is less than that of film, and there are no messy chemicals to fool around with during processing. Digital x-rays have been a very welcome addition. Not only can images be viewed at the touch of a button, but we can now blow up the x-rays to the size of the computer screen. No more squinting through a magnifying glass to search for little cavities. The images can be rotated or enhanced, and the contrast can be sharpened to make previously undetected cavities jump out onto the screen. These larger images make it much easier to explain the need for a particular dental treatment. They can also be emailed to specialists or to insurance companies. Technology allows life to keep getting easier. Dr. Gangwisch is a board certified general dentist with Gangwisch Dental Group, L.L.C. More information at GangwischDentalGroup.com.

Building Your Health Team By Julie D. Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC If you lost your health, can you imagine how your life would change? It’s so important to maintain good health, but how do we do that? I believe the key is prevention rather than treatment. Taking responsibility for ourselves and having a “whole body” approach to health helps to create a balance in our lives so we can live more proactively. The key to knowing your body is to create a health team. Please don’t depend on the internet and your own interpretations of it! You want to put together a team of professionals that can address your “whole body issues.” If you have a member of your team who claims he can handle all your needs, you might want to consider looking for another member. Professionals have scopes of practice. There are procedures you have to be licensed for in order to perform. For example, I am not allowed to make chiropractic adjustments to your spine or diagnose illnesses. A good professional will respect his limits and recommend other trusted professionals for you to see. The team offers multiple modalities to get to the root of your issues because not everyone is the same. The object of the team is to keep you healthy and to teach you about your body. The more you know, the more likely you are to be compliant and maintain good health. Your body is an awesome creation! Take good care of it and you will live a wonderful quality of life. A health team might consist of a primary care physician, optometrist, dentist, nutritional counselor, naturopathic doctor, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist, and family counselor. You want to address the mind, body, and spirit. Compiling a group of professionals gives you more resources to handle health issues on a regular basis. You become better educated about your body and can prevent disease and injury, which helps you stay active and healthy. Some people will only see professionals who take insurance. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover natural therapies. Our medical society is a reactive, treatment-oriented entity, not a proactive, preventative community. In other words, you have to wait to get sick before insurance pays. I always say you will pay for your health either on the front end or the back end. I assure you that you will want to pay on the front end. You are worth every penny. Who will be a part of your health team? Julie D. Mills-Watson, is Owner of Body of Health. Cherry Hill Owners Bring Their Antique, Auction, and Estate Sale Business Back to Snellville By Heidi Campbell The Lastinger family, long-time Snellville residents, are thrilled to have their Cherry Hill antique and estate sale business back in their home town. “Snellville is home for us,” explains Lynda Lastinger, one of the three owners. “We enjoyed Monroe, but it was never home.” After a five year run at the Monroe Cotton Mill, Cherry Hill is settled into its new home: 2135 Main Street in Snellville. They knew they wanted to renovate a vacant building, and the old Walmart in the Snellville Oak’s shopping center was just right. “We are all about repurposing,” explains Lynda. “It’s what we do in this business. We love to find new uses for old stuff!” The renovated space, which boasts a 37,000 square foot showroom, is warm and inviting. Cherry Hill customers enter into an upscale gallery of high-end consignment furniture that leads into the “mall,” an area which, at full capacity, will house 150 independent dealers. The “auction house” rounds out the back of the space, where owner Richard Lastinger, a licensed auctioneer, hosts auctions on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. The new store also houses consignment pieces from estate sales. Lynda, who runs the company’s 150 estate sales each year, enjoys helping people find solutions for belongings that they no longer need, want, or have room for. “One woman, who had just lost her husband,” Lynda recalls, “planned to take her entire estate to Goodwill, thinking it was all worthless. On a friend’s advice, the woman called us. We ended up having a $115,000 sale! This was a perfect example of how people don’t realize what they have!” The Cherry Hill team looks forward to giving back and plans on donating money from their Grand Opening Barbeque event to the Council for Exceptional Children. “Cruise In” charity car shows will be held monthly. These events are, according to owner and store manager, Robert Lastinger, “a lot of fun for everyone. I’m a sound engineer, so I DJ the event in the old radio show style, with music from the 1950s and 60s. We did one at Grace church that raised $100,000 for student ministries.” “We love this community,” says Lynda. “It’s been four years since one of our kids has been at Brookwood High School, but we are still pulling the band trailer for all their football games.”

Pork loin 1 gallon water 1 cup salt 1 cup sugar Cooking oil Favorite BBQ rub Favorite BBQ sauce Brining Process Wash the pork loin under cold water and wipe down with a paper towel. Happy ‘Days’ Are Here Again! Patty and Steve Day know a great home when they see one. After all, they’ve moved 36 times, most recently to Olde Town Grayson. Olde Town Grayson offered the no-maintenance lifestyle the Days were looking for. They chose a roomy 3-bedroom villa, which was elegantly decorated by Patty, an accomplished interior designer.
Cooking Process Rub all sides of the pork loin with your favorite BBQ rub. Prepare your smoker with indirect heat and bring to 250 degrees. Put wood chips or junks on top of the coals – I recommend using apple wood. Cook for roughly 1 1/2 hours. During the last 30 minutes, apply your

favorite BBQ sauce (or stop by Foggy Bottom BBQ for a bottle of ours). Make sure to close the vents of the smoker after applying the sauce. This will help the sauce absorb some additional smoky flavor. Smoke the pork loin to an internal temperature of 145 degrees. ***Important - do not overcook. The meat will become tough. This is the biggest mistake pitmasters make. Pull the meat out of the smoker and set on a serving plate. Cover lightly with foil for at least 20 minutes. Slice roughly ½-inch thick slices. Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy.

Finding Your Perfect Home As the old saying goes, real estate is all about location, location, location. But there is a lot more to it than just plain geography when it comes to finding your perfect home. There are a lot of things to consider during the search, because for most a home is the most significant purchase people will ever make. Choose a Good Area If you have children, you may want to choose a home that is close to good schools and is also located in a family-oriented neighborhood. Many people also look for a home that offers a short commute to and from work. If you are shopping within a specific price range, you can also narrow the choices by finding an area that offers the best value for your dollar. Select a Style Whether it’s a garage, basement, extra bedroom or bath, a large kitchen, or fireplace, choosing the style of home that you want is an important first step in finding the perfect place to hang your hat. You may also want to consider whether you prefer a single-level or two-story home. Many home buyers also factor in floor plans when searching for a house, including those that offer an open and flowing design. Get Pre-Qualified Now that you know what you want and where you want it, it’s important to find out how much of a home you can afford. Prequalification is not the same as pre-approval. With pre-qualification, your lender will request specific information relating to your income and expenditures, and will offer a possible price range for you to keep in mind while shopping.
Pre-qualification does not guarantee that you will receive an approval, but it does give you a good indication of how much you can afford based on your current situation. Talk to a REALTOR® Nobody knows the real estate business like a REALTOR®, so let them help you in your search. They can answer questions relating to the neighborhood, recent inspections on a particular home, and any needed repairs. Because a REALTOR® has access to a number of area homes, the agent has the ability to show you various choices within your preferred area and price range. Ask About Amenities One of the most significant concerns of any home buyer is what a home has to offer. Utilities, such as water, sewer, cable, phone, and electricity, are just a few of the things to consider. If the home is in a subdivision that requires the payment of association dues, how will these funds be used? What amenities does the homeowners association offer? These are all questions to ask your REALTOR® when shopping for the perfect home. The search for your perfect home is a journey. It may be either long or short, and with or without some bumps along the way, but the greatest satisfaction will be at the journey’s end and your future’s beginning. By Terie Hansen At this time of year I receive an influx of calls for dog training as many people have brought a new dog into their home. Some call right away, while others wait until they have experienced negative behaviors or issues from their new pet. So when is the best time to reach out to a dog trainer? The answer is simple: before you bring the dog home! In fact, before you even choose a dog is best. A good dog trainer can help you decide which breed, or more importantly, what temperament and energy level would best fit you, your family, and your lifestyle. A good dog trainer can offer tips to make the transition of the new arrival go smoothly and to help establish leadership skills immediately, especially if there are other pets in your home. They can advise you on how to introduce your new dog to the dog(s) you already have, which is vital in minimizing possible battles for pack ranking. A good dog trainer will teach you that slowly introducing your new dog to its surroundings and limiting its access to one or two rooms initially will help the new arrival feel safe and comforted. Bringing a new dog home is an exciting time for you and your family. However, keep it calm and low key for the first week or two. Think of how you might feel in a totally new and strange environment. Would you want it to be crazy with new people you didn’t know clamoring around you, touching you, and talking to you in a foreign language? Or would you prefer a calm, quiet, and relaxed transition that gives you time to adjust and take it all in? Think about it.

In May of 2011 we met Chrissy Thomas who introduced us to her business, About Face Skin Care. At the time, About Face occupied a Happy Mother’s Day! 1,000 square foot space with a staff of three. Today, About Face Skin Care has expanded to 4,500 square feet and employs a staff of twelve. To quote Chrissy, business “exploded.” While her oldest client is 84, Chrissy says new clients are coming in younger and younger, in part because of more effective treatments. Improvements made in the last few years include successfully treating brown spots and acne scars, body contouring, and non-surgical face lifts. “The trend is toward more permanent solutions which can then be supplemented by products like botox and juvederm.” More and more men are becoming About Face clients, too. According to Chrissy, it’s not unusual to step into the waiting room after 5:00 p.m. and find it full of men. The most exciting change made since 2011 is the addition of About Mind and Body, a studio where yoga, pilates, barre, and kick-boxing are just a few programs offered by twelve fitness instructors. “So many of our clients have the same issues,” Chrissy says. “We want to provide a place where they can move and learn together.” Clients may attend fitness classes and lectures in a boutique atmosphere on such subjects as raw food and healthy aging. They can also learn how to build a rock garden and attend a “Sip and Paint.” Chrissy’s husband, Sam, joined About Face full time in 2011. Chrissy now calls that decision “the best we ever made.” While Chrissy treats clients, Sam handles marketing and human resources. It also means that Sam can pick their children up after school, and they both can enjoy more family activities. In March, About Face will enter its 13th year. In that time, the Thomas’ have gone from being parents of young children to parents of teenagers. Chrissy is grateful for advice she’s received from clients such as, “Be present. Your children aren’t yours forever,”and, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” As the area’s “skincare service leader,A” Chrissy knows About Face has made great strides and will continue to grow. Chrissy Thomas is the owner of About Face Skin Care and About Face Mind and Body. Up Close with: Jane Bishop, CEO of “Take the Next Step” By Stacye Carroll Jane Bishop didn’t so much decide to become a life coach as feel compelled to through her “God-given gifts.” While coaching men’s and women’s basketball teams in a time when few women filled those roles, Jane realized her passion for helping others. Today, as founder and CEO of “Take the Next Step,” Jane puts her twenty-five years of experience to use by offering coaching, consulting, and training to individuals and groups who are eager to make a change. Jane says many clients come to her feeling “stuck.” One woman no longer felt satisfied working for a company she’d been with for over twenty-four years. As a skilled professional life coach, Jane assisted the woman in finding a solution and executing a plan for positive change. Though coaching currently does not require licensing, Jane – already a holder of two master’s degrees – sought training through the International Federation of Coaching. She holds credentials that reflect education, a specific number of coaching hours, and screening for specialized skills. Credentialed coaches are held accountable through a code of ethics that stresses confidentiality, and through continuing education. That’s alright with Jane, who believes, “When a person stops learning, they stop living.” According to Jane, coaching differs from therapy and consulting in that coaches listen to clients while allowing them to come to their own conclusions. During a thirty minute complimentary session, Jane might ask such questions as, “Where are you currently?” and “Where do you want to go?” She only makes suggestions with the client’s permission. Clients appreciate the types of questions she asks, her listening skills, and the fact that Jane is authentically client-focused.
“Take the Next Step” also offers coaching, consulting, and training for groups and businesses. Services include use of the DISC personality profile and its 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive Team. Jane has lived in Gwinnett County for thirty years and refers to it as her “second home.” That title takes on an entirely different meaning upon learning that as a “military kid,” Jane lived in eleven cities in four states, and in one foreign country. Jane says her parents provided stability to her and her 2 brothers by always reminding them of their roots and by taking family vacations back home. Sports were a big part of their lives as was fitness which, according to Jane, “undergirds every part of life.” Upon retirement from the military, Jane’s father became pastor of a local church where her mother served as music minister. Her parents’ frequent reminder that she could “do anything you set your mind to” provided lifelong inspiration. Out of all her qualifications and life experience, though, faith is the one thing Jane turns to most often. “Everything centers around that,” she says. “Our gifts come from there.” Jane’s regular column, “Living4ward,” will return to Our Town in March and is an extension of her business by the same name. Services offered include event planning, onsite event coordination, emceeing, and public speaking engagements for any group or organization looking to be encouraged and inspired while having fun. Her new book, Breadbox-Life By the Slice, will also be available later this year. Jane Bishop is founder and CEO of “Take The Next Step” and “Living4ward.” More information at www.takethenextstepcct. com, www.living4ward.com, and www.facebook.com/takethenextstepcct.
