Most of us know that when you improve your lifestyle, not only do you lose weight but many health problems improve. But sometimes the body needs more than just a balanced diet and exercise. You could be having other health issues that may be prohibiting you from having the full effects of a good healthy lifestyle. That’s where Functional Medicine may be able to help. As a Doctor who practices Functional Medicine, my job is to assess what your body needs so that it can work (FUNCTION!) at its best - without the use of stimulants or drugs! And if you are on medications, I will work with your Medical Doctor to help you reach your health goals!

On the Cover: Lavista Dentistry - A Family Affair By Stacye Carroll Dr. James Granade, who goes by Jim, didn’t realize at first that he would follow his father’s footsteps into a career in dentistry. It wasn’t until the summer after high school graduation, when his father called him to fill in for an assistant who was ill, that Jim knew this was his calling. There was never any question that he would join his father’s practice in Tucker, where some of the patients who have known him since childhood still call him “Jimmy.” The family atmosphere is one of Jim’s favorite things about Lavista Dentistry. Two staff members, who have both been with the practice for over thirty years, are also his cousins. Strengthening family ties even further, Jim and his partner, Dr. Garrett Sanders, were in the same graduating class at the Medical College of Georgia, and later, Dr. Sanders’ wife and Jim’s brother were in law school together. “We’re a close-knit group,” says Jim. “The patients hear lots of laughter in the office.” And that’s the way he likes it. Having an office in Tucker for over forty years affords Lavista Dentistry the opportunity to treat three and four generations of the same family. Even though the office sees patients of all ages, geriatric dentistry is a big part of their practice. For these patients, comfort and function are often the focus of care. For example, the doctors recently saw a patient in her eighties who was being treated for depression. During her exam the patient complained of pain, saying she was unable to chew her food. The doctor was able to ease her pain and alleviate her depression by using dental implants while still managing to salvage many of her original teeth. Loss of teeth is a failure, according to Jim. “You’ll never get better ones than the ones God gave you.” Implants are just one of the many changes and innovations in dental care in the last twenty years. The use of porcelain and composites in fillings and tooth coloring technology have also improved. Lavista Dentistry is one of only about half of all dentist offices using digital x-rays, vastly reducing patients’ exposure to radiology. Jim describes dentistry as “a gateway to overall health.” Even with all the improvements in care, he says the most important piece of advice he gives patients for good dental health is very simple. “Brush

In charge of keeping the office running smoothly are (left to right) Pat Cooper and Sharon Purcell, office administrative assistants. and floss,” he says. “If everybody followed that advice they could put us out of business.” Trust is another reason patients choose Lavista Dentistry. Not long ago a patient came to the office after seeing another doctor who had suggested he needed eight or nine crowns at a cost of approximately $9,000. Examination by the doctor revealed that just a couple of fillings needed repair. The staff at Lavista Dentistry understands the importance of patient trust. As someone advised Jim many years ago, “If you treat the patient like you or your family would want to be treated, success will follow.” For more information or to make an appointment go to: www.lavistadentistry.com

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion @ryansauers

Welcome to our February issue. The month of February reminds us about the things that we love, or does Valentine’s Day and my anniversary make me do that? Who knows? I invite you to think beyond your family and friends, and to reflect upon our community. Why do you choose to live in this community? I love how it feels like a throwback, and different from many others in metro Atlanta. People actually know each other, look out for their neighbors and help one another. We hope you are as excited as we are with the changes we made last month in the January magazine. The positive feedback we have received surpassed our expectations. We have heard so many great things: you like the newly designed and all gloss look; the pages are easier to read; it looks different as if it is a new publication; and you’re enjoying the new monthly columns. Our social media and online presence have been growing at a rapid pace. We have online-exclusive articles posted weekly on our blog. All of our information, including social media feeds, the online blog, and photo galleries of the cover and feature stories, can be found on our website at ourtownmag.org. On the website you will find a list of locations where you can pick up a magazine if you do not get one at your home. On another note, I want to congratulate Claudia Bonilla (info inside) for winning our photo contest, “What do you love?” The March issue’s contest is “How do you deal with cold weather?” Email your photo and description to info@ endresultz.com We appreciate our readers and also our incredible advertisers. You have a choice of where to spend your dollars so I ask you to support them. We are dedicated to delivering this community quality and positive content online and in print through a variety of mediums. So, please stay connected and share. And until next time and as always: this is my town, the town, your town, Our Town!

She is considered to be one of the best in her field. She founded and directs her own business, and mentors others who would follow in her footsteps. She’s a professional speaker whose talents provide her with opportunities to appear on television here in the United States and in places as far away as Oslo, Norway. This coming spring will be an especially busy time in her already full life, as she graduates from Georgia Tech University with honors. At just 22 years old, Erica Robinson has already accomplished more than many people twice her age. She started clogging at the age of ten. By 14, the former Brookwood student was dancing competitively and participating in her mother’s professional speaker’s bureau. “I feel like I’ve been on stage all my life,” says Erica, who as a former Miss American Clogger, works to spread the word that clogging is “no longer crinoline skirts and wooden shoes.” Today’s clogger mixes basic steps with Irish step, hip-hop, jazz and tap dancing. And the competition is fierce. Winning scores may be determined by just a tenth of a point. Working out of Lawrenceville, Erica coaches the award-winning Phoenix Clogging team. She also dances competitively as a member of TNC Elite. In 2009, Erica received what she calls one of “the biggest blessings of my life” when she was awarded a full college scholarship to Georgia Tech by the Shirley and Bill Weir Foundation. After graduation she hopes to add digital marketing to her already impressive resume. When asked about her goals, Erica immediately mentions opening a dance studio. She also looks forward to starting a family…one day. For now, she is “hitting the ground running.” Erica Robinson is director of the Phoenix Clogging Team. Sports Talk: Parkview High School’s Athletic Director Mark Whitley By Heidi Campbell Coach Mark Whitley, a 29-year veteran teacher, is now in his sixth year as Parkview High School’s Athletic Director (A.D.). Whitley, the 2002 National Strength Coach of the Year, starts each morning in the weight room motivating students as early as 6:30 a.m. He spends hours working with budgets and eligibility paperwork, supervising the halls and lunch room, and, currently, interviewing at least eight head football coach candidates to fill the shoes of retiring Cecil Flowe. Whitley was delighted to move from Monroe to the Parkview area in 1999. “This is the coolest, most loyal and dedicated community,” he says. “It has the same feel as the small town I grew up in.” He notes that since he’s been at the helm, the boys’ Varsity baseball team has won two State titles and the National Championship in 2012. The girls’ Varsity soccer team has taken home three state titles, and both boys’ track and the boys’ swim and dive team have won States. “We have won at least one State Championship in at least one sport each year since 1993. Some years we’ve had several!” Whitley says proudly. Whitley, who holds an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama, finds his role as A.D. a rewarding one. He appreciates the fact that, for now, he has none of the administrative responsibilities that most A.D.’s in the county take on. He is still considered a teacher, which allows him to continue to coach the football team’s defensive line and serve as the track team’s spring coach. “Games are like plays,” he says. “It is so rewarding to see that light bulb go on; to see all that practice paying off.” His Twitter slogan aptly reads: “Love coaching. It can be done. We lead.” To learn more about the Parkview Athletic Program, visit www.gcps-markwhitley.onmycalendar.com.

A Senior Moment: How Do I Love Thee? By Amy Hentschel Let me count the ways... Elizabeth Barrett Browning beautifully wrote in her “Sonnet 43” of all the ways that she felt love towards her husband. In this the month of love, I felt compelled to write of the very tangible ways that we can show our love to our family by preparing for the inevitable course of aging. One of the most loving things you can do for your family is to have a plan and provisions for when you begin to need care. Legal Issues: Up-to-date will, durable power of attorney, and Medicaid planning Estate Plan: Tax implications on gifts and inheritance, trusts, and property ownership Medical Expenses: Cost of long-term care, insurance, Medicare and Medicaid benefits Medical Care: Doctors, specialists, list of medications, medical history Housing and Care: Home modifications, senior communities, private caregivers, home safety End of Life Plan and Care: Hospice care, funeral arrangements, and living will wishes These items can seem overwhelming to accomplish all at once. We recommend that you take one or two items a year and find the best resource in the community to help you create a plan. Some arrangements may change over the course of the years, but to have some plan is better than no plan. May everyone find time this month to share some love with a senior in your life. In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints,—I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life;—and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner of Senior Provisions, LLC. For more information visit www.myseniorprovisions.com

Total Thermal Imaging: A form of Natural

Medicine Beneficial to Cancer Patients

%RG\ )OR

Private and Group

By Alexa Lampasona Dr. Rebecca Praden is an advocate of “practice what you preach.” Her credentials include being a Board Certified Naturopath, a Master Herbalist, and a certified Natural Health Care Professional. Her practice, however, extends beyond the books. The preparations and treatments have been used on her family and staff members, making them true believers of the services provided. Rebecca shares more about her natural medicine practice. Thermography is non-evasive and no-contact infrared imaging used to detect temperature changes in the body. When the body gets inflamed or aggravated, its temperature rises. A thermal imaging scan can register different areas of the body that have a changed temperature of even a hundredth of a degree. The images are read on-site, and then I send them to Dr. George Chapman, the pioneer of thermography, to read the scans and make sure I don’t miss anything. We can identify vascular, gastrointestinal issues, aneurisms, migraine causes, and back problems just by analyzing the range of colors from a scan. The easiest way to prevent illnesses is by living a lifestyle that keeps cancer away, but people come to our office just as they would a regular doctor. We practice a natural approach by thermal imaging, body work, and natural immune support. Thermal imaging is beneficial for people who have already been diagnosed with cancer because we can watch the tumor activity without introducing radiation to the body or compressing the body like a mammography would. Cancer patients are told their only options are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, but there is so much more that can be used adjunctively. I work with oncologists who send their patients here so that when the patients have to endure chemotherapy, their body is as strong and healthy as it can be. If they do find that their treatment fails, they come here for quality of life so they can enjoy the remainder of life instead of feeling pain and weakness. The main focus for a cancer patient is to strengthen the immune system so the body can heal itself. This can be done through: A diet filled with fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Supplements and herbs that strengthen and energize the body. Discussion about anxiety or ways to achieve bucket lists. Active stimulation for lymphatic drainage. An infrared sauna treatment to increase strength and detox the body. My biggest success story is my office manager. When I first met her we were neighbors and she always followed doctor’s orders; but I think everyone should be a doctor of his or her own body. She began trying my methods and realized they worked better. She would give a natural supplement to her son when he had a cold, and he would get better while her husband wouldn’t take it and would stay sick. I believe mind, body, and spirit have to be in balance to be in good health. Each person is treated differently because everyone is an individual. You have to analyze the treatment option that is right for you. We have to detoxify our bodies to nourish and improve it. Total Thermal Imaging officially opened its doors on January 16. Cold Weather Tips for your Vehicle By Sam Mahdavi Temperatures are dropping and our vehicles aren’t used to the drastic weather patterns. Besides scraping ice off your windows in early morning, there are other measures you should take to ensure your vehicle is driving safely. To help care for your vehicle during the winter months, we’d like to share some cold weather tips: • Your coolant runs fluid through the hoses in your cooling system to prevent the engine from overheating. Because it goes through extra stress to keep your engine cool during the summer months, inspect your hoses and clamps for your cooling system in the off months. Look for white residue, which is what’s left behind after a coolant leak. Remember to check your pressure cap for proper fit and seal. • Change your antifreeze every 30 to 40, 000 miles due to break down. • Cold weather can wreak havoc on all rubber components, so check your belts and tires, and don’t forget the spare. You want to look for cracking and/or discoloration. When checking your tires, make sure you inspect the sidewalls and in between the threads. • Make sure that your tires have 34-35 psi of air pressure. You want to ensure proper inflation throughout the year, because the change in temperatures can affect inflation levels. Getting Schooled:

Providence Christian Academy’s STEM Program Prepares Students for the Real World By Alexa Lampasona In the classroom, an iPad stopwatch ticks down the time. Four groups of students cluster around their latest project—using a deck of cards as a structure to hold weight. Randy Cailor, the teacher for this STEM class, floats from group to group. “Why do you think this structure will work?” he challenges the students. “We try to get them to collaborate and think out of the box,” Cailor says. “There isn’t one answer. Here I’m trying to get them to think for themselves.” Cailor knows about thinking for himself. Before he began the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program at Providence, he owned his own structural engineering firm for 16 years. As a parent and past girls’ basketball coach of Providence, Cailor wanted to give back to the school. “Having his willingness as a professional engineer has made the first year of this program so effective,” Head of School Dr. Jim Vaught says. “He has given us guidance because he has real world experience and connections in the industry.” The students are learning on industrial-level software, which gives them an edge for what college courses will be like. 8th graders work on a crime scene investigation, using DNA samples to figure out the death of a victim. 9th and 10th graders pair with a class in Los Angeles to collaborate on a design project. 11th and 12th graders design a sample Fine Arts building for the school and will present their designs to professional architectures and engineers at the end of the year. The STEM program is funded by Project Lead the Way, a non-profit that supports 5,000 schools nationwide with STEM programs. Providence is the only school in nine surrounding counties that has a full program. The organization creates the curriculum and handles the background research to keep up with ever-changing trends. The students are all the school needs. “We expected 40 students to enroll in the elective course,” Assistant Head of School Dr.

Sean Chapman said. “We have 80 students in five courses who meet throughout the day.” The non-profit is funded by major companies such as Lockheed Martin and Intel, and it promises to turn out students who will be on their way to success in college. At Providence, most of the program supplies were donated by parents. “School traditionally appeals to visual and auditory learners, but not every student has that preferred learning style,” Vaught says. “To be tactile and actually work in a group to build and design things is a great opportunity that can’t be produced in other classes.” Cailor has a heart for the students, especially the girls. As the father of three daughters who attended Providence, he wants girls to feel confident about being smart and taking STEM classes. One of Cailor’s senior girls was accepted to multiple colleges and wants to major in tissue engineering, a segment of biomedical engineering. “There’s always collaboration, and every day is different,” Cailor says about his favorite part of the job. “They aren’t going to like everything, but I want them to find out what God’s gift to them is and how they can use it ten years down the road.” View a photo gallery of the students’ work online at www.ourtownmag.org. Keep up with the school at www.providencechristianacademy.org.

Your Thoughts Are Showing By Jane Bishop, Life Coach We are what we think! Researchers have discovered that the average person has approximately 50,000 thoughts per day. Over 90 percent of those thoughts are replays from the day before, and the day before, and the day before. Those thoughts impact our behavior, conversations, job performance, relationships, etc. They reflect attitude, perspective, confidence, or competence. Our thoughts are the one thing in life we totally control. We also control the thoughts we “feed.” For example, if we feed negative thoughts, then “but, can’t, and if only” are common words in our vocabulary. If we feed positive thoughts, then “and, maybe, next time” are common. What thoughts are you feeding? How are they hindering you from living4ward? One solution for change is to use a coach approach for mental discipline. A coach approach is the use of powerful questions to get you where you want to be. Powerful questions require you to think for yourself. They are open-ended—they require more of a response than “yes” or “no.” Powerful questions can help uncover needs, evoke dreams, and open conversations. Consider these “starter questions” so you can take the next step in living4ward: • What are your thoughts “showing”? • How are the conversations you have in the privacy of your mind influencing your life? • What is the “theme” of your self-talk on a daily basis? • How does self-talk multiply or minimize your gifts/skills? • What is the most common battle your self-talk wages? • How can you begin to replace negative self-talk with positive? For further improvement, invest in hiring a life coach who can help you generate learning and clarity with a commitment to accomplishing goals for living4ward. Remember, your thoughts are showing! Snellville Heating and Air has served the metro Atlanta area for over 25 years. We thank company president, Don Vansant, for taking time to answer a few questions for Our Town Readers. Q: With typical use, how long should a HVAC system last? A: Most last 10 to 12 years. Q: What should be considered when deciding whether to repair or replace a system? A: Customers should compare the amount spent on repairs over the past 2-3 years to the cost of a new system. For instance, fan motors cost as much as $1,000 and a compressor usually starts around $1800. Just these two items come close to 1/2 the cost of a new system. Q: What keeps customers coming back to Snellville Heating and Air? A: We are a referral-based business, and always do whatever it takes to keep customers happy. We have reasonable prices, dependable service, and quick response time. Our employees always have a great attitude. Q: How often should air filters be changed and who should do it? Are all air filters the same? A: Standard filters should be replaced 3-4 times per year. Homeowners can change their filters if they prefer, but changing filters is not the same as a tune up. All filters are not the same. You get what you pay for. Cheap filters only remove very large particles of dirt and dust. The more expensive filters will also help remove bacteria, mold spores, and very fine dirt and dust. Q: Do you recommend programming a thermostat to a lower temperature while everyone is gone during the day and/or on vacation? A: In mild weather this will usually save the homeowner a few dollars. In extreme weather it costs more to “catch up” than to keep the temperature constant.

Pet Question of the Month: By Melissa Finke Should I consider dental x-rays for my dog when I take him in for his annual cleaning? -Scott P., customer of Village Vets Over the years we have seen significant advancements in veterinary dentistry. This has led to better diagnostics and treatment for dental disease, resulting in healthier and longer lives for our dogs and cats. One of the most important newer diagnostics has been dental x-rays. Dental x-rays in dogs and cats are similar to those performed on humans. But because of precise positioning and the need to place equipment into the mouth, anesthesia is required. And with the development of digital x-rays, radiation exposure is kept to a minimum. In order to understand the importance of dental x-rays, it is necessary to realize that 2/3 of the teeth are below the gum line. In some cases, the visible portion of the tooth or gingiva (gum tissue) may give us a clue that there is a problem. However, x-rays are required in order for us to understand the exact nature or extent of the problem and to determine the best possible treatment. For instance, a small fracture of a tooth may not appear to be causing any problems. But x-rays often reveal secondary abscesses at the root. Swelling of the face can indicate a tooth root abscess, but can also be a symptom of a tumor. X-rays may be helpful to differentiate these diseases. And missing teeth can be an indication of impacted teeth. Over time these impacted teeth can result in destruction to the jaw bone. This diagnosis could not be made without x-rays. Dental x-rays may also be utilized prior to extracting teeth in order to predict any complications that may arise. They can also determine if teeth were completely removed following the extraction. Melissa Finke, D.V. M. is a veterinarian doctor at The Village Vets in Lilburn. More information at www.thevillagevets.com.

February is centered on romance and extending that extra effort to say, “I love you.” But have you ever given yourself a big fat KISS? After the craziness of the holidays, give yourself a break! This is a perfect time to lose the pursuit of perfection and simplify the way you live. I am not an organized person by any standard, but when I keep things simple, everything somehow seems to get done. Do the things that are rewarding to you and make time for your hobbies, not just your responsibilities. Try joining a book club or bunko group, or sprout your own veggies and herbs and do some indoor gardening. It is amazing what you can do when you just turn off the TV! Want a simple tip for a huge health improvement? Get a good night’s sleep. Instead of watching the news or tackling that last load of laundry, hit the hay. Ask for help from your family members and teach them accountability as well. Limit your kids’ activities and increase family time. Your life will be so much more manageable, plus these times will produce your family’s greatest memories. Ask yourself three questions: What are you doing for yourself? What are you doing for your loved ones? What are you doing for those around you? We cannot be everything to everyone, and understanding priorities will simplify both our clocks and our calendars. As singer Babbie Mason says, “We have come to the point in America where we worship our work, work at our play, and play at our worship.” Wow. Take care of yourself so that you can care for the ones you love. It’s as simple as that. Julie Mills is owner of Body of Health and Life. www.bodyofhealthandlife.com.

Got Lip Lines and Crow’s Feet? Try Collagen Induction Therapy By Chrissy Thomas, RN BSN Collagen and elastin are the support systems of the skin. Collagen, which acts as the structural support, and elastin, which gives our skin its elasticity, are starting to decline in the human body by the mid 30’s. When this happens, skin becomes less supple and fine lines and creases begin to form. Lips look less full, small pleats begin to form around the lips, crinkled skin forms under the eyes and deeper creases are soon noted to the naso-labial folds and forehead. Collagen Induction Therapy, or CIT, utilizes tiny needles to make micro-openings in the top layer of skin, thus stimulating the lower layers to produce more collagen and elastin. Just as you have to stress muscle fibers to build more muscle, this stress on the lower layers of skin will stimulate the body to self-repair with more structural support. These tiny channels also allow products applied to the surface to penetrate deep into the skin to heal the effects of aging quicker. The effect is thicker dermal and epidermal tissue with less creases, smoother color and tighter pores. The first CIT appointment discusses treatment and specifics of post-care to assure that the client has no previous history of keloid scarring or allergies to metals or numbing agents (“Caine” medications.) The procedure lasts an hour and is typically repeated every two to three weeks for a total of six times. Results are noted within the first two weeks, but will continue to improve for up to a year. In addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles, CIT is also an excellent treatment option for firming skin, treating brown spots, smoothing acne scars and stretch marks. It is touted as a great alternative to or enhancement for Botox® and injectable fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®. Chrissy Thomas is an RN/BSN and owner of About Face Skin Care. If you are interested in learning more about Collagen Induction Therapy, visit www.aboutfaceskin.com or email info@aboutfaceskin.com.

As I sit in front of the fireplace during this cold winter in Atlanta, my mind drifts off to one of my favorite destinations of the Caribbean. Nestled North of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and just south of the Bahamas, “Turks” is a small string of islands with beautiful beaches and a laid back lifestyle. Until recently it was an untouched archipelago, surrounded by a protective reef and sitting in the midst of an unimaginable turquoise sea. Now most of the large islands are inhabited, and those that are not offer wonderful opportunities for exploration, solitary beaches, and fishing. Bone fishing here is about as good as it gets. Sportsfishing Magazine rates Turks and Caicos Islands as the best blue marlin territory in the world. But it is on the beaches of the smaller islands that Bone fishing is better than good. Wahoo, sailfish, white marlin, tuna, and dolphin can be caught year round. The turquoise waters, for which the islands were named, are also a haven for magnificent tropical fish. The surrounding reef is a diver’s paradise. There are several beaches where you can wade out into the water, so even snorkelers can observe beautiful sea fans and brain coral. Turks was once a small retreat with only private homes and condominiums; but now there are wonderful hotels with a full range of water and land activities. At most hotels you can find bicycle, tennis court, and water sport desks that offer parasailing, windsurfing, sea kayaks, Seadoos, and charter powerboats—not to mention world class spas. There is even an 18-hole championship golf course. Turks and Caicos Islands are a great find. As I sit here, watching the cold wind blowing outside, I wish I was there right now—walking down that beautiful white beach alongside turquoise blue waters. A Rare Disease Empowers Lilburn Resident By Leslie Edwin Rare Disease Day is on February 28, 2014, and this year’s theme is “Join Together for Better Care.” Rare diseases affect fewer than 200,000 Americans at any given time. They are isolating, and finding treatment is often difficult. Lilburn resident Leslie Edwin has suffered for years from her own rare disease. Her early symptoms, which she initially ignored, included rapid, unexplained weight gain in the abdomen and neck area, diabetes, high blood pressure, and extreme mood fluctuations. It was only until she developed other symptoms, such as hair loss, acne, and weak leg muscles, that she took matters seriously. Her work as Event Coordinator for the City of Lilburn came to an abrupt halt in October 2012 because of declining health. Blood tests revealed high levels of cortisol from a tumor on the pituitary “master” gland in the brain. The tumor causes Cushing’s disease, which is fatal if left untreated. After a series of surgeries at Emory in the winter of 2012 with neurosurgeon Nelson Oyesiku, Edwin is currently in remission and has become an outspoken advocate for Cushing’s patients in Atlanta and beyond as the Cushing’s Support and Research Foundation’s contact in the Southeast (www.csrf.net). Most people who have had Cushing’s strongly feel that there are frequent misdiagnoses because of the prevalence of obesity and diabetes. A simple cortisol blood test could be the path to correct diagnosis, especially when conventional treatments fail. Visit www.rarediseaseday.org or contact Leslie Edwin at blueofnoon@hotmail.com for more information.

Have you ever watched a baby or young child learn by exploring the world around him or her? The eagerness in a child’s face demonstrates a yearning to learn as much and as fast as possible. Learning opens up a new world by enabling us to understand how things connect, act, and react to each other. It is important that as children grow, and there are more demands for earning high scores and good grades, that an excitement for learning be nurtured. How do we instill a love of learning in our children and students and cause them to want to learn? Here are a few thoughts: If parents and teachers are enthused about what they are teaching, then it is likely that the child will be excited, too, since children often mirror the attitudes and actions of those with whom they associate. It is also important to learn alongside your child by taking the time to become familiar with the same topics he or she is learning in school. Select a book your child is reading, read it at the same pace as your child, and talk in depth together about the class assignments. Model or demonstrate a love of your own learning. It is difficult for some students to see why they should put time and energy into learning something new, especially if they do not see their parents taking the time to learn new things, too. Talk about current events, history, politics, or social justice at the dinner table and in the car. At the core of learning, there also needs to be a reason or purpose for the student to want to learn the information being presented. In other words, knowing the usefulness of what is to be learned is important. If learning by repeated memorization, a child can become bored and unexcited about the content. Additionally, learning a topic must make sense and be logical. A student needs to know from where this new information originated and understand how it can be applied to other concepts and situations. It is vital to answer the questions who, what, where, when, and how, in addition to the question WHY. In today’s educational environment of standardized tests and test preparation, one of the greatest challenges teachers and parents face is being able to be creative in their lesson plans. Often they feel that because they are busy teaching how to take upcoming tests, they have lost the ability to be creative and teach “outside of the box.” Therefore, the task of motivating our children to want to learn and to love learning demands that parents take some of this responsibility and learn how to instill the love of learning in their children. Children love learning when they know why it is important to learn the information, when they can feel engaged in the topic being presented, and when they realize they are competent in their ability to apply the knowledge. By becoming involved in your children’s learning, you will provide the opportunity to build their knowledge base, to create effective life-long habits, and, more importantly, to build a stronger connection with the world and with you through their love of learning. Get Up, Stand Up. Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

Roll your old 401(k) without taxes or penalties. Evan M Patterson

By Kelly Farris

Financial Advisor

Evidence suggests subjective well-being influences both health and longevity. Subjective well-being, which refers to people’s evaluations of their lives, can be judgments of life satisfaction and evaluations based on feelings, moods, and emotions. Happy people might be adding four to ten years to their lives in comparison to unhappy people. Be happy and live a better, longer life. That sounds simple. Yet, many of us have stresses and worries that seem to pile up. Chronic stress and worry can have ill effects on our sleep and our immune systems. Once we upset that foundation, we can feel like we are spiraling out of control. We have to figure out ways to facilitate happiness in our lives. Exercise may be our most effective instantaneous boost for happiness. A review of over fifty studies confirmed sufficient evidence to show a single session of exercise can improve mood and improve mental well-being. I see the evidence every day as I train my clients. Exercise makes you feel good, happier, and more confident! It is the most underutilized antidepressant in the world, and it’s virtually free. Find other activities you look forward to. Pick up a new hobby. Volunteer. Make time to spend with your friends. Spend quality time with your family. While connections with other people are vital to our well-being, don’t look for others to complete you. Trying to find your inner happiness in another person can put a strain on your relationships. You create your own happiness. Health experts have concluded that our modern sedentary lifestyle is killing us. The buzzword going around is “Sitting Disease.” So don’t just sit there. Get up, stand up, and get moving. Don’t worry. You’ll become happy in the process.
