Celebrating 25 Years with Vecoma at the Yellow River

By Kristen Eleveld

There are some local businesses that hold a special place in all of our hearts, whether it’s because of their industry expertise or amazing client care, or because it is a place filled with great memories that last a lifetime. One place that has all these qualities and more is Gwinnett’s own favorite wedding venue, Vecoma at the Yellow River, which is now celebrating twenty-five years of incredible service. You may already be familiar with Vecoma at the Yellow River as a perfect place to hold a wedding or vow renewal. Between their lovely outdoor and indoor ceremony options and their commitment to giving each couple the best wedding day possible, more and more clients are flocking to Vecoma to commemorate their special day. For many couples who got married over the last couple of years, their day was extra special because they wondered whether they would have a wedding at all. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many ceremonies to be postponed or reimagined, meaning a dream wedding could easily turn into a logistical nightmare. But the staff at Vecoma responded to the pandemic fallout with the calm expertise of wedding planners who know how to handle anything, and they began offering new options to their clients, including their popular elopement package. When one hears the word “elopement,” Vegas comes to mind; but those simplified ceremonies are just as beautiful as any wedding at Vecoma. Couples can still choose from one of seven gorgeous locations and have the ceremony they dreamed of while simplifying their guest list and narrowing down other options. The elopement package was borne out of necessity during the height of the pandemic, but co-owner Caroline Tucker has noticed that couples have continued to choose this

option even as gathering restrictions have been lifted. In fact, Vecoma at the Yellow River has become such a popular wedding venue that it was recently featured in the VH1 show My Celebrity Dream Wedding, where brides-to-be choose a celebrity wedding as the inspiration for their own nuptials. One Vecoma bride did just that, completing the celebration with décor that matched her favorite celebrity wedding – that of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, which took place in 2018. The Vecoma staff worked closely with the decorators to ensure this wedding was everything the bride had imagined. Even if a client doesn’t have a celebrity-inspired theme in mind, Caroline and her co-owner Judith Warren are always ready to help a bride and groom achieve the look they want for their ceremony. One of Caroline’s favorite recent weddings took on a more laid-back, boho chic vibe, while others have opted for a more formal elegance. No matter what your style is, the team at Vecoma is excited to help you Continued on page 20

Ryan’s Remarks By Ryan T. Sauers

@RyanSauers

@RyanTSauers

I have written countless columns over the years that are positive and encouraging. Each one has been written with my full heart. We are at a unique place in time as we enter the second month (February) of 2022. Let us not forget, however, that we live, work, worship, and play in an amazing community. I know now, more than ever, that our community represents the very best of America. COVID-19 and the changes it has caused to our lives are unprecedented. I challenge you to find the best in this ongoing situation. We must be patient, caring, tenacious, innovative, loving, and supporting. We are ALL in this together. So, maybe we should think: How can we give back? How can we support those who are hungry or homeless? How can we support small business? This is way bigger than any one person. It does not help anyone when we post things online that are negative and divisive. We must not grow weary but keep up the good fight. I promise you – we will prevail. And, if we do these things, then we ALL will be stronger for it. This unique period in our history demands great leadership. I have seen a lot of leaders develop in the past year from all areas of my life. It has been great. We must remember the time we have on this earth (regardless of this virus) is short. Let us make it our passion to make others smile and laugh – even if from under a mask – and to be a breath of fresh air as we help and serve others. Again, I encourage you to support small businesses during this time. They are the backbone of our country and community. Please find ways to help them. The changes in our lives have been real and seemingly going on for more than we can remember. However, we must not let this moment define us. Instead, we must define this moment. We will do so: one step at a time, one punch at a time, one round at a time. A hundred years from now people will be talking about this time in history – our moment of time. The choice is up to us to create the change we want to see. Are we going to teach younger generations what can be learned from this time? Is it possible we can all come together and UNITE? Maybe we can have real dialogue again and put our silly Continued on page 8

Tips for Creating an Edible Garden: Anytime and Anywhere By Our Town Gwinnett Staff

People have become more health-conscious in the last year, seeking relaxing activities and projects that give them a sense of accomplishment. According to the National Gardening Association, many Americans are growing or planning to grow their own fruits, herbs, and vegetables in 2022. More than 18.3 million new gardeners are trying their hand at growing their own flowers or produce. While growing your edible garden can be exciting, there are a few things to consider before you start. It can all feel a bit overwhelming, but with tips from Garrett Magee, the design mastermind behind the landscape design firm Manscapers, you can create the ultimate edible garden, no matter the time of year or where you live. Here are a few suggestions to help your garden sprout. 1) Think about what you already eat Before you start digging, plan your edible garden by looking inside your fridge to see what kinds of produce you buy from the grocery store. By growing fruits and veggies you like, you do not have to worry about them going to waste. If you have kids, grow the fruits and veggies they enjoy, too.

2) Start small When building your edible garden, start small by growing plants out of a window box or small garden bed. As you get more comfortable, slowly expand and scale up the following year. Fruit and vegetable gardens are typically low maintenance, but they are never no maintenance, so be patient and stay on a regular schedule. You’ll develop your green thumb in no time. 3) Grow a vertical garden if you live in a big city If you live in an urban environment or don’t have a traditional backyard, every square inch of space is precious. However, that does not mean it’s impossible to garden. Focus on growing your produce up rather than out with tools like a garden trellis, which works well for supporting high-climbing plants like cucumbers. 4) Go green For the quickest turnaround on your homegrown crops, focus on leafy greens like lettuce, kale, spinach, and herbs. These vegetables are easy to grow, whether in a window box or a big backyard garden. Plus, you can continuously harvest them throughout the season. Important tip: when harvesting leafy greens, use scissors to cut off the outer leaves at the base of the stem. That way, they can grow new leaves in the center. 5) Find more ways to incorporate fruits and veggies into your life Growing an edible garden can help you to eat more of the fresh produce you love. However, you can also incorporate fruits and veggies into your daily routine with a Naked Juice smoothie. Naked Rainbow Machine is a sip-able rainbow made from the juices of apples, mangos, bananas, kiwis, blueberries, blackberries, and red beets. “Beets are not only one of the ingredients, but also my favorite superfood,” says Magee. “They are a great end-of-season vegetable and can be planted at the end of spring or from June to September.” (BPT)

Ryan’s Remarks Continued from page 7 differences aside. This is not the time for Republicans or Democrats, but it is the time to come together and focus on our common humanity. We are all human beings made of flesh and blood. So, keep your head up. This too shall pass. You cannot control some things that are happening; however, you can absolutely choose how you respond to them. Finally, thank you as always for being in our corner. It means a lot to all of us. And thank you for continuing with us on the journey of my town, your town, Our Town.

Beware the Hobby Gatekeepers! By K. Coats

I’ve done my fair share of craft fairs in the surrounding area, and recently I participated in my first one since COVID-19 struck. I was elated and having a great time as folks walked around my booth. Making quilts is part of my artistic expression, and I enjoy displaying and selling them. Loads of fellow quilters came through and complimented me, and we all talked shop about our different projects. The fun came to an abrupt halt when I was visited by the “quilt police” twice later that afternoon. They pursed their lips and looked down their noses at my art – art that had been complimented profusely. Isn’t it strange how two people’s negativity outweighed an entire morning of compliments? But I find I’m not alone in this – and neither is quilting. I think every hobby has gatekeepers – people who want to guard their hobby from what they perceive as impurities. But it comes at a steep price. Those people will be the same ones lamenting that their hobby is dying out. I hear it from fellow quilters all the time – no “young people” want to learn how to quilt. I wish those people had met the young people who spoke with me about wanting to learn. When I told them I was self-taught, their faces lit up, and I made sure to encourage them to keep going. I said, “Welcome to the fold!” and gave them my card in case they had any questions. They were happy to be encouraged and supported. And I was happy because new people were wanting to join the hobby. But, sadly, that attitude, which should be universal, isn’t shared by everyone. Gatekeepers are people in a hobby or fanbase who feel protective of it to the point they begin acting as guards, deciding who is worthy to share and who is not. What they fail to understand is that any hobby or fanbase is akin to any other human institution. It has to change, grow, and adapt to the times. I love quilting, but if I were limited to churn dash blocks, I’d never have stuck with it as long as I have. Gatekeeping forces a hobby or fanbase to stagnate, and eventually its members become curators of a lost art instead of a creative community. It ends up taking the fun out of it both for creators and those who would appreciate that art. A great example is Star Wars and how gatekeepers in the fanbase were so serious about it that George Lucas lost interest in his own creation. The gatekeeping fans had guarded it so zealously that they’d also guarded against the fun that originally drew them and the creator in. I like Star Wars. Do I like every film? Certainly not. But other people like the ones I don’t, and who am I to say they are wrong for finding joy just because it wasn’t to my personal taste? At the end of the day, be it a fanbase like Star Wars, Marvel films, or a hobby like quilting, knitting, or pottery, people find joy in it, and sometimes that joy can turn toxic if not checked. We all can get possessive over things we care about. I feel that’s only natural. But when does that care shift from joy to gatekeeping? Here’s a list to help determine this. 1. Do you find yourself wondering if someone is a “real” fan or creator according to your own arbitrary standards? 2. Are you intolerant of variations or changes within your hobby or fanbase? 3. Do you like to feel superior to newer members of your community? 4. Do you often “test” people’s knowledge when meeting them to

my Doctorate in Chiropractic 2018. I joined the team at Dr. Chris’ Natural Remedies in January of 2019, where I wanted to use my knowledge to help those in need of my services. The therapeutic services we offer include ultrasound, electrical stimulation (e-stim), cold laser therapy, myofascial release, neuromuscular reeducation, cryotherapy, kinesiology taping, and vibe plate. Ultrasound therapy can be used to reduce pain, relax tissue tension, increase blood flow, break down scar tissue, and deep heat. The most common injuries treated with ultrasound include bursitis, tendonitis, muscle strains and tears, frozen shoulder, sprains, ligament injuries, as well as joint contracture or tightness. E-stim is a noninvasive method for relieving pain by sending mild electrical impulses through the skin to help stimulate injured muscles or manipulate nerves. Common conditions for treatment include neck/ back pain, joint pain, arthritis, muscle conditioning, muscle injury, muscle atrophy, nerve inflammation, and surgery recovery. Cold laser therapy is a low-intensity laser therapy that stimulates healing on a cellular level while using low levels of light. The primary uses for cold laser therapy are tissue repair and relief of pain and inflammation. Common conditions for treatment include ligament sprains, muscle strains, tendonitis, bursitis, spinal/joint pain, inflammation, wound healing, skin rejuvenation, and much more. Myofascial release focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness in trigger points by releasing the fascia over a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than a single point. Muscle movement can be restored with myofascial release, strength to the muscle, improved circulation, decreased pain, and reduced adhesions and scar tissue. Neuromuscular reeducation is a technique that is used to restore normal body movement patterns. Patients who experience general tenderness and decreased motion of joints need to be addressed to eliminate the patient’s symptoms and correct the underlying problem. Without the neuromuscular reeducation process, “normal” movement patterns are unlikely to be re-established. Cryotherapy means “cold therapy” where the body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Cryotherapy has multiple benefits, including reducing migraine/headache symptoms, numbing nerve irritation, reducing joint/arthritic pain, promoting healing and blood flow, reducing pain and inflammation, and reducing swelling. One Man’s Opinion: We ALL Deserve Better By Bill Crane

My choice for the White House last won the office in 2004 (it’s been a minute), but just the same, for 100 reasons I can’t list here, without consuming several columns, I want EVERY U.S. President to be successful. I want even more for them to lead by example, have actions and deeds which mirror their campaign promises, and respect the importance of the Office of the President to which they have been elected. I’ve been disappointed a lot lately. Suffice it to say, even when I agreed with some of President Donald Trump’s appointments or policy choices, his delivery and communication of the same I often found lacking. And after the November 2020 General Election contest, which he lost, and since, I think we have seen his true colors – and for me, it’s not a pretty sight. This brings me to President Joe Biden along with Vice-President Kamala Harris and their most recent visit to Atlanta. We are not in the throes of a heated presidential campaign, or the upcoming midterm elections with some high stakes for the White House. Yes, I get we can’t take politics out of politics, but there is a place for rhetoric, hyperbole, and stretching the truth, facts, and reality past the point of breaking. Perhaps that should be saved for political ads or national party conventions. 678-829-7750 The White House captain and co-captain did briefly place a wreath www.SPHCLLC.com at the burial crypt and resting place of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., allowing enough time for the requisite photo op. Then back in the motorcade to the scenic and historic Atlanta University Center. Dr. King was among many things a Morehouse Man. The Voting Rights Act of 1964 was last re-authorized during the presidency of George W. Bush. Martin Luther King Day became a federal holiday during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. In Georgia, it was the GOP, not the Democratic Party, that brought in Advance Voting, No Excuse Absentee Voting, Drop Boxes, Souls to the Polls, and Saturday voting, expanded Motor Voter Registration and Online Voter Registration. I’m not suggesting that I found every aspect of SB 202, the Georgia Voter Integrity Act, necessary, but I also don’t think it is wrong to secure the chain of custody for absentee ballots, to require the same standard of identification for In-Person voting as Absentee and Advance voting, and to require that EVERY county offer drop boxes and keep them secure INSIDE an early voting location. Congressional Democrats are preferring two pieces of Voting Rights legislation. One would restore and require the U.S. Justice Department pre-clearance of all changes in Election law by all Southern states. Southern states met Attorney Anita Lamar, Founder those requirements for nearly four decades. I do not see a need to turn back the clock in that manner either. IF YOU’VE And yet this president who well knows better, borrowed language COMMITMENT TO ETHICS, heard days prior by a news anchor on a network known for leaning EXPERIENCED A… TO INTEGRITY, þ Car Accident in. One on One with Tawana Haith Chealey By Our Town Gwinnett Staff

Our Town Gwinnett (OTG): Please tell our readers a little about yourself. Tawana Haith Chealey (THC): Currently, I co-own a property preservation company with my husband, Cedrick Healey, named Chealey Solutions LLC in Loganville. Additionally, I am a realtor in the Metro Atlanta area under PalmerHouse Properties. My passion and objective are to help my clients accomplish their goal of homeownership, whether it is their first time or twentieth time. I’ve co-authored one book that covers my experiences as a caregiver in my late 20s to my terminally ill husband titled Death Tangle: A Widow’s Memoir of Survival. I’ve written and self-published two other books: Strong Angels – a view through a child’s eyes what death looks and feels like to them – and Property Preservation 101 – a co-written book with my husband that introduces budding entrepreneurs to what property preservation is and how to break into the field. The first two books can be found on Amazon, and the latest can be found on chealeysolutionsllc.com. The dearest project to my heart is establishing my foundation, Pocket Change, Inc. The not-for-profit organization will help widows struggling financially who have dependents under 18 re-establish themselves after losing a parent and spouse that was possibly the breadwinner. OTG: What do you want our readers to know about you? THC: I am a woman who has been through a plethora of triumphs and adversities. Moreover, I’m a wife and a mother of two boys, 16 and 9 – a blended family. I’m a former widow and divorcee. One of the most challenging times of my life was when I found out that my youngest son was on the spectrum. I understand the importance of celebrating the small things. I have an education background and I’m learning that being able to teach and connect with people isn’t limited to the classroom. OTG: Who were your mentors and role models? THC: My mentors and role models lived in my home and community in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were my mother, grandmother, and every single aunt in my family. In addition, the other women and men in my neighborhood directly and indirectly mentored me. OTG: Describe some of the struggles you’ve encountered and how you overcame them. THC: I’m the product of a mother who had to raise her children without the consistent involvement of their father. We moved numerous times before I graduated from high school. I wasn’t always treated kindly by many of the people I looked up to and respected, but I moved forward. I experienced a miscarriage at 24. I lost my first husband to cancer two weeks after turning 30. I learned that accepting God’s will over my own was essential to my son and my healing. OTG: What are your favorite things to do? THC: I love to write, spend time with my family, and think of ways to help others. OTG: What excites you? THC: What excites me? That I woke up. That I can see the grass from the top and not from below. I love watching my family progress and achieve their goals. OTG: What role does community play in your life? THC: Community is my life-line. It is meeting and connecting with February 2022 Our Town Gwinnett

13th Annual Special Olympics Georgia Polar Plunge Challenge By Traci Sanders

The average temperature in Georgia during the month of February is in the mid-fifties, which means lake temperatures will be at least ten to twelve degrees colder. Would you jump into those icy waters on a winter day? On February 19th, a group of brave individuals will do just that! Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) will hold its 13th Annual Polar Plunge Challenge, a huge fundraising effort benefiting Special Olympics and the athletes. This electrifying event will take place at Acworth Beach at Cable Park on Lake Acworth. In order to participate, individuals or teams collect pledges from friends, family, and colleagues to lock in their spot. SOGA also partners each year with local businesses and organizations to raise money for these athletes. “The more we raise, the more athletes we impact,” said Marketing and Events Manager Catherine Justice.

This year SOGA has teamed up with three police agencies: Gwinnett County Police Department, Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, and Lilburn Police Department. Private donations for this event are being accepted on each agency’s website. Specifically, these organizations sponsor SOGA through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which improves the lives of those with intellectual disabilities by providing year-round sports training and by covering food and travel accommodations for the athletes who compete. This is a cause that hits home for many of these officers. Therefore, some participate in the Polar Plunge, while others donate their time in other aspects, such as raising funds and managing security for the events. More information about the Torch Run can be found at https://www. specialolympicsga.org/torch-run/ The admins and coordinators at SOGA are highly involved in these events and many even brave the icy waters and take the plunge with the athletes. This year the goal is $200,000 and they are confident they’ll meet it, with the help of the police officers and private citizens. Preset donations ranging from $25 to $1,000, or custom contributions, can be made on the SOGA website. Spectators are welcome to come out to this event to cheer on these “plungers” and support this great cause. More information at https://www.classy.org/event/polar-plunge-2022/ e371535.

Learning Lessons: Tips to Raising a Child Who Cooperates By Tanisha Turner

Cooperation is a basic life skill that allows children to make friends and work successfully with others. The definition of cooperation is simple enough: combining energies to work towards a common goal. But teaching it can be a challenge as it requires a combination of character attributes, such as respect, honesty, patience, and thoughtfulness. Every parent wants his or her child to exhibit these skills, but they are tricky lessons to teach since young children are naturally focused on themselves. The good news is that cooperation can be learned over time through purposeful activities and frequent encouragement from parents and caregivers. We know that children learn character mainly through imitation. They listen, observe, and learn cooperation skills by watching the words and actions of their caregivers and parents. When your child sees you working happily with others, he will sense the joy you feel and want to experience that joy, too. By practicing cooperative skills in front of your child, you are teaching behaviors that will ultimately help your child succeed. Here are some ways you can model cooperation: • Listen carefully to others so that you can understand what they are saying. • Share or take turns when more than one person wants the same thing. Start at home with family conversations that allow everyone time to talk. • Compromise when you have a serious conflict. • Do your part of a shared task and do the very best that you can. When you complete your task, ask others how you might help them complete their work. • Show appreciation for what people contribute to a group or team. • Encourage others to do their best. • Include everyone and make everyone feel needed. Help your child recognize that everybody has something valuable to offer in a group. In addition to serving as a role model, it’s important to be intentional about teaching cooperation to your child. Use the following every day activities as opportunities to encourage your child to cooperate with family and friends: • When you read a story with your child, point out times when the characters cooperate with each other. Discuss how the characters feel and how much easier it is to accomplish the task when they work together. • Schedule household chores at times when all family members can work together to finish them. Praise your child for her attempts to help, and refrain from redoing the chore when she’s finished. Help

her see the fun of working together to accomplish a goal. Talk about how much faster the chores were completed than if mom or dad had to do it alone. • Point out how cooperation with chores allows for more time for family fun. • “Catch” your child sharing or helping someone and show your appreciation. Encourage the behavior, but refrain from giving material rewards. They are not necessary. Children should learn the joy of helping others without expecting something in return. By taking advantage of these moments and creating learning opportunities for your child, you will help him understand the importance of cooperation. Working together becomes fun for children as they develop an understanding of the skills and techniques needed to achieve a common goal. Hobby Gatekeepers Continued from page 9 determine their worthiness? 5. Have you ever stopped someone else from being creative as a result of your criticism? If you answered yes to more than one of these, you’ve shifted into a gatekeeper and have unknowingly become your own interests’ enemy-from-within. I urge you to take a step back and really consider what it was about your interest that gave you joy in the first place. Go back to when you first discovered that hobby or fanbase and consider how wonderful it was to explore and experiment on your own. Remember the people who supported you when you were a novice and return the favor by supporting others instead of keeping them out. The truth is, once you welcome new members, the community grows and becomes that much more wonderful.

Pet Perch: Two Underutilized Dog Training Tools By Terie Hansen

A leash and a crate are the two most underutilized training tools. Whether you have a new puppy or adult dog, these two tools are the fastest way to get to a well-trained dog. Some dog owners feel bad about crating their dog/pup. Actually, crating is the best thing to keep them safe and to speed up the training process overall. If you have or have had children, then at some point you have used a crib. When your baby needed some downtime or a nap, you put him or her in the crib. When you couldn’t supervise or interact with them, you put them in a crib or playpen to keep them safe. A crate is just a crib with a lid. It keeps your dog/pup from getting into things that could be harmful and prevents them from practicing negative behaviors when you can’t supervise. When you have your dog out of the crate, your pet should be on a leash, even inside the house. When you have a puppy or even an adult dog that is new to you, they don’t know what the rules of your house are. It is your responsibility to teach them. Dogs don’t speak English. Training teaches your dog key words/commands which gives you verbal control of your dog. Before they have learned these commands you still need some form of control and that is what the leash gives you, physical control! This simple tool plays a major role in helping you teach your dog all the basic obedience commands. One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make early on is giving their new dog or puppy too much freedom, and not enough boundaries, structure, discipline, and training. They allow their dog to roam freely about their house, give them tons of affection via physical touch, toys, treats freedom, etc., and very quickly the dog begins to think it rules the roost and can do whatever it wants. Which is exactly what it begins to do and bad behaviors ensue! That’s the point at which owners either call a trainer, give up the dog, or worse, dump it. By simply having implemented crate training and using a leash to control a dog while also beginning to train, most negative behaviors can be avoided or stopped as quickly as they begin. Both of these things are not forever if you are consistent in the training process. They are Continued on page 20

Neighbors helping neighbors: it’s a basic tenet of every great community, including those right here in Gwinnett. But while all of us do what we can to help our fellow man, there is one organization in our own backyard that has dedicated its mission to finding housing for people in need. The Gwinnett/ Walton Habitat for Humanity is not only working to build homes for its neighbors but is also making strides in changing the surrounding community for the better. Staffed by both dedicated employees and volunteers, Habitat for Humanity is most often associated with home-building, but the services it provides extend far beyond a roof and four walls. For instance, the Gwinnett/Walton Habitat also offers a program called A Brush With Kindness. This program is designed to assist people who already own their home but may not be able to keep up with needed repairs due to age, ability, or financial income. Keeping these homes safe, dry, and accessible is a huge priority for Habitat for Humanity, even if they did not build the home themselves. “Habitat’s mission includes building communities and hope – this is most often done through building of new homes, but also includes home repairs projects and Neighborhood Revitalization initiatives,” said Director of Programs Jen Welch, whose task it is to oversee the many programs and opportunities that this Habitat for Humanity offers. Communities and hope are at the center of everything the Gwinnett/ Walton Habitat for Humanity does, as reflected in their mission statement: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” While giving people safe homes is certainly one of their main objectives, Habitat for Humanity maintains an even larger goal of ensuring that everyone in their community knows there is hope to be found through this organization. For Jen, one of the main benefits of the Habitat organization is the human connection it offers to neighbors from all walks of life. “It’s great to see how connections and relationships are formed throughout this process,” Jen said. “So often we see that new relationships formed while building continue past the build site.” Many of these relationships are forged between volunteers, workers, homeowners, and anyone else who wants to help Habitat for Humanity’s mission move forward. An entire company may bring their staff to a build site, while another may work to raise donations towards supplies and materials. Whatever the contribution is, the Gwinnett/ Walton Habitat for Humanity is always looking for people who are willing to give in some capacity, demonstrating the power that a community can have in changing the lives of those around them. If you are wondering whether you might qualify for any of the services provided by Habitat, there is an easy process to find out. Just head to habitat.gwinnett.org/become-a-homeowner to learn about the qualifications needed to be eligible for a home build

Small Business Spotlight: Three Ways to Support Local Small Businesses By Our Town Gwinnett Staff

There are millions of small businesses in the United States and so many in our community owned by passionate people working hard to make their dreams a reality. Rather than buying from a big retailer the next time you need something, consider supporting the locally owned businesses around you. When you support a small business, you’re not only helping build your community, but also directly impacting someone’s life. Every customer counts when it comes to small business, which means your dollars can help that small business owner thrive. For example, as the nation’s largest insurer, State Farm® has more than 19,000 agents who are small business owners themselves, and who are committed to restoring lives, rebuilding neighborhoods, and investing in the communities where they live and work. This desire to help started 100 years ago when the company was founded by a farmer who was concerned that big city insurance companies would not serve the specific needs of his business and community. Here are three simple ways to support small businesses and have a positive impact: 1) Get to know your community through its businesses

Your support matters all year long. For many people, this means shifting their mindset to thinking about local options first and getting to know the types of products and services your local businesses are providing. Whether you are purchasing items for yourself or someone else, start to understand how these local businesses can fill your needs. Don’t forget, many small businesses offer gift cards, which are wonderful ways to show ongoing support. 2) Support small business service providers Small businesses aren’t just for tangible goods. Many provide important services, such as your local mechanic, dentist, or plumbing company. So, no matter your needs, try and find businesses that are active in the community. You can spot these businesses by seeing how they engage with their neighbors. Look for the providers that are going above and beyond to support the neighborhood and other small businesses. By supporting those that have a strong investment in your community, you are helping them create a greater impact. 3) Share your experiences Many small businesses rely on satisfied customers to tell others so they can grow their client base. People trust word of mouth, so your effort makes a difference. In fact, more than eight out of 10 people around the world said they completely or somewhat trust the recommendations of friends and family, according to Nielsen. Plus, two-thirds said they trust online opinions from consumers. So, Continued on page 22

One Man’s Opinion: How Media Bias Helps NO ONE By Bill Crane

It is Election Night, November 7, 2000, and my first election providing live on-air analysis. It would also become the longest election in my closing on a quarter-century in this business. That night, a well-known, but somewhat unproven vice president of the United States was considered the favorite to beat a younger governor of a major southwestern state. The governor’s father had been president, and he was the third generation in his family’s political dynasty. The contest of George W. Bush versus Al Gore, also of another family political dynasty, would ultimately be decided weeks later by the U.S. Supreme Court. Gore had already conceded a narrow loss to George Bush, based on exit polling data and the state of Florida being declared for Bush. But as the night wore on, the numbers in Florida kept getting closer, and as Bush was heading toward the stage with his acceptance speech in hand, Gore called back to withdraw his concession. The nation would not have a declared president-elect until December 12, 2000, when the U.S. Supreme Court ended a series of Florida ballot recounts, focusing on Broward and Palm Beach counties. Bush’s margin at this point was down to several hundred votes, and the Florida Supreme Court was about to add additional jurisdictions to the hand re-tally. Ending the recounts, with Bush ahead, in a split 5-4 decision awarded Florida’s Electoral College votes to Bush, who would later win the election by just 5 votes in the Electoral College. Less than a month later, as Congress certified those Electoral College votes, with Vice-President Al Gore presiding over his own defeat tally, several Democratic members of Florida’s congressional delegation would object to the Florida tally – and presiding officer Gore would rule them out of order. Two weeks later, on January 20, 2001, with a blizzard blanketing D.C. and a bit more than frost in the air on the Inauguration stage, Gore would gaze straight ahead, with jaw set, as just a few feet away Bush was administered the oath of office, and once again the United States successfully completed a peaceful transition of power, something which still remains for many an envy of the free world. During those weeks of recounts, there were protests aplenty in Tallahassee, the Florida state capital. Some election officials took catcalls and hate mail, particularly Florida’s Secretary of State, while the candidates themselves remained above the fray; and although each had teams on the ground where the recounts were occurring, the major news networks and legacy newspapers were not also stoking the flames of passionate support on either side. But at that time the Fox News Channel was only four years old, nothing of the force in politics which it has become since, and though MSNBC had launched the same year as Fox (1996), it was then known more for talk-shows and longer format NBC News shows and reruns. Today we have a former president referring to his own much larger loss of four close states, and the White House along with that, as the “crime of the century.” His acolytes chant “Stop the Steal,” now entering their second year, and supposedly credible candidates for the U.S. Senate propose initiatives like election police and forensic audits of every election before winners are announced. And from the current winning side, hoping to make their party wins perpetual, we have voter reforms disguised in a Trojan Horse overhaul of state and local election laws to be taken over by the federal government. While one party

We ALL Deserve Better Continued from page 12 of either then-Alabama Governor George Wallace or Sheriff Bull Connor? Joe Biden may be a few steps shy of his Senate prime (or more), but he knows the answers to all that. And as he previously admitted plagiarizing British Labour Leader Neil Kinnock during a prior presidential campaign, he knows those words and thoughts were not even his own. Again, Joe may be a little slower now, but he also knows the story of Chicken Little as well as the Boy Who Cried, Wolf. If truth and reality are there for the ignoring to score political points, what will you do when you REALLY need to move and inspire the American people? I still wish Joe Biden well and want his presidency to be successful. America and Americans have too much riding on the opposite. Habitat for Humanity Continued from page 18 or other repairs. Those who are a good fit will be prompted to fill out an application to indicate interest in the program, which will then be used to contact potential homeowners about the next Homeowner Orientation. After this required orientation session, Habitat selects the final applicants based on their needs and works with them through a series of workshops to provide future homeowners with the skills and knowledge they need to successfully maintain their mortgage in the future. Jen is passionate about educating the community on what exactly Habitat for Humanity provides. Contrary to popular misconceptions, they are not just giving away homes. All homeowners are responsible for paying their mortgage. Habitat just gives them an avenue to do so in a way that will allow them to meet their financial needs alongside the needs of their families. “Habitat works in partnership with sponsors to cover the cost of building the home up front. Habitat then owns the home and sells the home to a partner family at a no-interest mortgage, which is a huge savings factor in the overall cost of your home,” Jen explained. “Our homeowners will never pay more than a third of their income towards their housing costs, allowing them to save up for other important family needs such as health insurance and college funds.” This philosophy means that more families can have a roof over their head, and that the Gwinnett and Walton communities have a chance to help their neighbors out. If you want to learn more about how you or

your company can help Habitat for Humanity, check out their volunteer page for all the opportunities available to anyone who wants to make a difference. “I love being able to help people who want to help their community find a way to do so through Habitat,” said Jen. “It truly takes a community coming together to build a better home and brighter future for our families.” More information at habitatgwinnett.org

One Man’s Opinion Continued from page 21 laments their loss and claims fraud, the other claims that without these changes the republic is at stake and voter suppression is as rampant as the days of Jim Crow. News outlets choose sides; readers, listeners, and viewers predominantly read, view, and listen to only the news outlets that support or contribute to forming their opinions. This echo chamber breaks down civil dialogue expanding an increasingly tribal America of “us vs. them.” Those few thousand protesters in Florida during those 35 days of recounts have now swollen to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, with little but hate and contempt for members of the opposing team. These outlets leaning “their way” often feed and egg on this loathing and contempt, and later comment with surprise when the volatile becomes explosive. Back to Al Gore, staring icily ahead that cold January 20th morning.
