lover’s paradise. The space received an extreme makeover, with warm paint colors, angled walls, a carpeted area with over thirty consigners, a light room operated by a lighting expert who can repair any and all lights, an in-house auction room that seats 200 bidders, and booths that house sixty-five dealers. “We’ve also added a bargain center with discounted furniture, says Robert, “and we still have room for about thirty more dealers. Customers enjoy the eclectic variety. One customer recently purchased a seven-foot tall stuffed black bear. In one area, customers stroll down memory lane with a life-sized Elvis singing next to the front end of a pink Cadillac. Customers may also be interested in a pocket-sized, fully functional 1937 Ford Street Rod gas-powered car. “People come in here to find one-of-a-kind pieces. Conversation pieces, says Lynda. “We like to learn the history behind our pieces whenever possible, so that our customers can keep those stories alive. Lynda, who runs the company’s 150 estate sales each year, enjoys helping people find solutions for belongings that they no

A larger than life statue of Marilyn Monroe greets guests who come to explore the 37,000 square foot Cherry Hill antique mall, which opened its Snellville doors on April 18th. After a three year run in an old cotton mill in Monroe, the Lastinger family is thrilled to be a part of the Snellville community – a community they’ve lived in for over twenty-two years. “We love our new space! professes manager Robert Lastinger, whose parents Lynda and Richard Lastinger, own the business. “The city has been welcoming, and our customers are like one big extended family. Named after a Cherry Hill, NJ merchant who rose from the ashes after ruin, Cherry Hill began with estate sales and grew from there. “We have always had a fascination for antiques and old things, says Lynda Lastinger. After launching a successful estate sale business, Richard became an auctioneer, and they eventually opened the antique mall in Monroe. The new store, located inside what was once the Snellville Walmart, is an antique

longer need, want, or have room for. “We go in, and stage the house, Lynda explains. “We clean out everything. We have found some interesting things, including dinosaur eggs, vintage trains, and even a cool French hat press that ended up being worth $400. While she’s done hundreds of sales, one estate sale stands out. Soon after her stepmother passed from breast cancer, her daughter’s team began collecting donations for Relay for Life. At one of the sales, she put a jar out with a goal of collecting $1500 for the cause. One man asked about the jar. “I told him about our goal, recalls Lynda, “and he pulled $1500 out of his pocket! He said he found the cash in a box he bought, and, with tears in his eyes, explained that he just lost his wife to cancer. He said, ‘I’m giving it back to you, as long as it all goes to the Relay for Life team.’ We were all crying together! What a blessing that experience was. Cherry Hill believes in giving back to the community. They plan to have “car cruiseins to benefit various charities, including Chase Life, Boots for Hunger, and the Council for Exceptional Children. They

also donate the proceeds from one auction each year to Jingle Jog. They are currently planning a Christmas dinner feast for less fortunate families, which they will offer on Christmas Eve. “We have been blessed with a fantastic location, says Robert, “and feel that it is our duty to repay with service to the community. The holidays are the time of year when most are in dire need. “We love this community, says Lynda. “All three of my kids grew up here, and even though my daughter graduated four years ago, we still pull the Brookwood High School band trailer all over during football season! We love the kids and the teachers! Cherry Hill Antiques is located at 2135 Main Street in the heart of Snellville. More information at http://www.cherryhillauctions.com

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion @RyanSauers

By Ryan T. Sauers

I hope you are off to a great June. School is out and summer is here. My favorite time of year – shorts and sandals. In this edition, we have a cover story on the amazing group at Cherry Hill Auctions. Other stories include “getting schooled” with Parkview Christian, “business spotlight” with Alcove Coffee, and a “community member spotlight” on Eric Godfree. Our Town’s overall readership keeps growing each month. This is through our high quantity of copies mailed to select homes, additional copies distributed in our display shelves in strategic areas throughout the community (getting near 20), our online version which is growing exponentially, and our heavily engaged social media audience that stays connected each month. Please visit the online version at OurTownMagOnline.com, or our social sites at Facebook.com/ OurTownGwinnett, Twitter.com/OurTownGwinnett, and YouTube.com/EndResultzInc to stay connected. lNew website changes are underway at OurTownGwinnett.com, and we are working O d Hwy 78 to navigate to make it easier Hwy 78 (whether you are on a computer or mobile device) so you can get the community information you need in the quickest way possible. ★ FRATELLI’S a high-end quality printed product (gloss with a unique size) with content Our Town provides PIZZA people want top read. We provide better stories and lower adverting rates, and we touch readers oi n t R of channels. We integrate online, print, and social media so you can choose through a variety d how you “consume the content” we offer. This is a “true win-win” for our readers and advertising partners. Finally, I ask that you support our advertising partners who invest, believe in, and support this community. Please consider where you spend your money and choose an Our Town partner. Thank you for doing this, and tell them Our Town sent you. We are excited about the future and know the best is yet to come. Friends, as I type this Parkview High Baseball (who we did a story on last month) is headed to the state championship series. And, Brookwood High School’s Boys soccer team just finished up as runner up for the state championship (after beating Parkview soccer in overtime in the semi-finals). Wow, what an awesome community. And there are many more examples that I don’t have room to mention. So… stay connected with us, as this is going to be fun. Here’s to a great summer, and as always: this is my town, your town, Our Town!

Faith is a funny thing. It can reassure you in times of doubt, soothe you in times of calamity, and enlighten you in times of darkness. It’s intangible; and yet you can feel it so strongly that it overwhelms your senses. Consequently, athletes tend to have an extremely strong faith as a result of their beliefs in hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Eric Godfree, the head football coach at Parkview High, knows these maxims quite well. A Lilburn native and Parkview grad, Godfree played football and wrestled in high school, and he remained on the gridiron while attending Presbyterian College (Class of 1999) where he majored in mathematics. Faith plays a pivotal role in everything Godfree does, including how he approaches coaching. “Faith is one of the driving forces in my life,” he explains, “and staying active in the church [he and his family] attend gives me strength and patience that heavily influences my coaching style.” In addition to this faithbased ideology, Godfree believes in leading by example. “My coaches and I prefer to let our actions speak more than our words,” he says. “In the end, a player truly needs to be self-motivated; but I think that it is a coach’s responsibility to help take these athletes further than they realized they could go.” Clearly, Godfree has combined a strong spiritual outlook with the unyielding drive to improve, something that no doubt makes him an even more effective coach. Although it’s been a while since Parkview’s last state title in football (2002, the third of 3 consecutive championships), Godfree is still highly respected in the community – not only for his athletic acumen, but also for his calm and steady demeanor. Godfree’s unshakeable belief system not only guides him through life, but it seems to have given him some certainty for his later years. “One day, football will leave me and my kids will be grown…but I hope that they will still have their faith to help them find happiness. I know I’ll hold onto it as long as I possibly can.” Although he’s won numerous coaching awards, including the Region 8-AAAA Coach of the Year and the Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week honors, Godfree maintains that his greatest accomplishment is simply getting the students under his command to buy into the process he’s set in place. “The Friday nights are Continued on page 20

Travel Tales: Medellin – Escobar Home Town

TAKE THE NEXT STEP COACHING | CONSULTING | TRAINING

GO FOR YOUR

By Pam Walker Much has been written about the deceased Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Not that I am interested in the bloody history of this famed outlaw, but when I was invited to travel to his hometown of Medellin, Colombia, I decided to see what was the real story. I have been in Colombia several times now: Bogota, Cartagena de las Indias, the coffee growing region, and more. It is a delightful country with lots to see and do. But I had never been to Medellin. In some areas of Medellin, now one of the most modern cities in Columbia, Escobar is heralded as a hero. He wanted to make sure that everyone was educated and had money to eat. Early on in his deadly career, he donated millions of his ill-gotten gains to build libraries, schools, and homes for the poor. He would also buy out corrupt politicians and convince them to leave office in support of those men who supported more social reforms. It was only when the US government began to see that his drug business was invading the US that he became the ugly militant leader of dangerous thugs. Trying to defend his empire, bombings, killings, and rapes were regular occurrences in Medellin. Then one fateful day, with the help of the US, he was discovered and killed while running from the police across the tiled roofs of his neighborhood. So good or bad, depending if you were on the receiving end of his money or nasty end of his bombings, Pablo Escobar made Medellin the city that it is today: a bright beautiful and growing city and one with a fabulous economic future of a now peaceful Colombia. If asked to come back again I say, “Si.”

Chaplains Corner: The Key to Spiritual Growth By Dr. Paul Ballard I have been asked numerous times as a pastor, “Paul, how can I grow in my spiritual life?” Many people respond with a list of spiritual disciplines: Bible reading, prayer, and Christian fellowship. My answer may surprise you. I don’t in any way want to minimize the importance of spiritual discipline, but none of these are the key to spiritual growth. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in Him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Jesus is crystal clear. The key to spiritual growth is abiding in Jesus. What does that mean? Books have been written on this subject, but let me give an illustration from everyday life. If I showed up on my doorstep and offered my wife a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates for our anniversary, and I told her I was giving this to her out of obligation and duty, she would not be happy. Why? She wants me to give her gifts because I love her, not out of duty and obligation. Is God any different? Does God simply want us to check off a box that says you have done a “good” deed today out of duty and obligation? Absolutely not! God desires that you desire Him. Christianity is not primarily an external set of commands and rules that you obey, but a relationship with a loving Heavenly Father. Christianity is not, “I obey; therefore, I am accepted.” It is, “I am accepted; therefore, I obey.” Abiding in Christ is recognizing your deep entrenched sinfulness, and that the grace of God seen in the finished work of Jesus Christ is your only hope. With religion, we obey to get something from God. The gospel of Jesus Christ changes us so that we obey because we love God. Your Pie: Express Your Inner Pizza By Rachael Brice While on his honeymoon in 2006, Your Pie founder Drew French fell in love with the brick oven style of baking pizza and had an epiphany - to create a one-of-a-kind restaurant where people could gather around a brick oven, drink craft beers, enjoy good community, and, above all, indulge in a delicious, personalized pizza. It was there on the small island of Ischia off the Italian west coast, where the idea for Your Pie was born. Two years later, the first Your Pie store opened in the charismatic college town of Athens, Georgia. Since its inception, Your Pie has been thriving, with twenty-three stores throughout the southeast, Chicago, and Oklahoma City. After a rigorous search for the perfect location, Your Pie Snellville opened its doors at The Shoppes at Web Gin on September 7, 2014. To everyone’s surprise, Your Pie has grown to become the highest grossing store across the country. Ross Bradley, manager of Your Pie in Snellville, started working in restaurants directly out of high school and continued through college. Upon graduating from the University of Mississippi, Bradley began running a Your Pie store in Monroe and then re-connected with long-time friend Andrew Williams, who manages Your Pie in Snellville with him. “We have a great partnership,” Bradley exclaimed. “Andrew knows everything about banking and finance, and I know everything there is to know about people and pizza so it doesn’t get much better than that.” Your Pie sets itself apart from its competitors through creativity and craft. The franchise encourages originality and inventiveness, and customers can choose to build their own personalized pizza, panini, or salad, or they can select one of the many available menu items. For the ‘Build it Yourself ’ route, patrons are able to select from gluten free, wheat, or white hand-tossed dough, eight different sauces, and six different types of cheeses, including vegan cheese. With over thirty-five fresh and premium ingredients to choose from, two pizzas will rarely ever be the same. “Throwing each hand-rolled dough ball, building each pizza, and placing it into the 800-degree brick oven to cook approximately four minutes is an art in itself,” Bradley said, “but we also take pride in our craft beer selections and creating our playlists for easy listening. We truly care about each customer and the product they receive.” For dessert customers can choose from a variety of delectable flavors of gelato and sorbet. Your Pie even has non-dairy sorbet items to accommodate lactose intolerant guests. Your Pie is a big advocate of community and family. During the three-week training period prior to its grand opening, Your Pie in Snellville partnered with Graystone Church and The Path Project, inviting groups within the community to sit in on training sessions so employees could train in front of a live audience. Community members were able to take food home at no charge and were given the opportunity to donate to The Path Project, helping to raise over $2,000 to jump-start its soccer program. This community outreach led to “Community Mondays” in which every month the Your Pie staff picks a charity or local school team to receive 10 percent of all proceeds raised each Monday during that month. The future of Your Pie is bright as Bradley and Williams plan to open a store in Loganville and Covington this year. “If we can meet our goal for everyone to leave satisfied, reinvigorated and feeling more creative than when they came in,” Bradley said, “our job here is done.”

Photo of the Month Life is Wabi-sab By Jane Bishop

Parkview Boys Baseball win the state championship!

On a trip with friends, one called my attention to a small store with “Life is Wabi-sabi” in the window. Being curious, I went in. I was asked by Brian if he could assist me, so I told him I was curious about the sign and wanted to know what it meant. He smiled and explained, “Life’s not perfect and we need to appreciate these imperfections. Wabi-sabi is the Japanese view of life that finds beauty in things that are simple and humble, ordinary and unrefined, incomplete and impermanent. Everything ages, nothing lasts forever, and sometimes things don’t work out as planned. Embrace the Wabi-sabi concept, laugh, learn, and become a better person.” A group of lifelong friends in Texas have embraced this concept and want to grow old and gray together. “No way were they going to let the business of life keep them from enjoying that special connection that they’ d grown to love. So they decided to literally create their own ‘Bestie Row.’ They all were fans of the tiny house movement, and decided to build their own little compound based around that idea” (Lighter Side Staff ). They purchased land and built a vacation and potential retirement area with 400 square feet cabins for each couple, a large common space complete with a large kitchen, dining room, living area and an extra bedroom with bunk beds for guests. Simpler living extreme? Maybe! “Life is Wabi-sabi”? Definitely! Life is chaotic, challenging, and complex. Living the concept of Wabi-sabi may not change circumstances, but it does help you Live 4ward through those circumstances. Live4ward today! Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. The Fountain in Tucker Continues to Entice Old and Young with Nostalgia, Music, and Great Food By Heidi Campbell Hand-dipped milkshakes. Root beer and Coke floats. Malts. Hot dogs and hamburgers. Relics from the 1950s commemorate the original walls of a building, which, for thirty years, was the Fountain Drugs Pharmacy and Soda shop of Tucker, run by Dr. Harold Fountain. Mike Holcomb, who bought the building fifteen years ago, has for the last ten years run The Fountain on Main Street in Tucker: a retro, family-oriented restaurant that brings the community together for food, live music, and memories. Holcomb, who grew up in Tucker, owned a graphics business around the corner and frequently dropped in for milkshakes. The new restaurant operators, who succeeded Dr. Fountain in the historic space, went out of business and papered up the windows. “There was a tear at the bottom corner of one window,” recalls Holcomb, “and I could see that these owners had cut up the swivel stools that were at the soda counter, and torn out the original soda fountain heads and milk shake spindles. The hoods and tables were also sold.” Holcomb felt compelled to act on behalf of this historic building. He immediately searched tax records to find out who owned the building, and contacted a woman in New Orleans who had no idea that the nailed-down artifacts – sentimental reminders of days gone by – were being stripped of their permanent home. The woman agreed to sell the building to Holcomb in 2000. “I never set out to own a restaurant,” shares Holcomb. “What I intended to do was save a historical edifice and have it remain available for the citizens of the community. This goal has been validated over the years every time someone tells me about meeting their wife at the counter. One guy told me, ‘I used to be a soda jerk here in the ‘50s.’ My real payment has come from these memories that the oldsters share with me.” Holcomb’s vision was to create a true community space, and through

fashion shows, artist showcases, book signings, and live music, he has achieved this goal. They are SEBA (Southeast Bluegrass Association) certified, and host a picking circle on Wednesday nights. On Thursday nights, a local jazz band takes the stage during the farmer’s market season, and the first Friday of each month is dedicated to folk music. Fridays and Saturdays are booked with local artists, and Sundays are now “singer songwriter” nights. The menu at The Fountain is affordable and original. After studying the hot doggery industries of Chicago, New York, and New Jersey, Holcomb designed the menu to include a host of unique hot dogs topped with interesting selections including chili, pimento cheese, sauerkraut, bacon, or baked beans, to name a few. They also serve soups, BBQ, burgers, and a host of vegetarian options. They have recently restored the Coca-Cola soda fountain service with malts, floats, and milkshakes made with Mayfield ice cream. Community Coffee is now served, and a baked goods case, filled with delicacies from La Petite bakery, has been added. Holcomb appreciates being a destination for families. “One thing I’ve enjoyed is watching the grandparents taking the grand kids out,” he says. “I’ve realized that we are the kind of destination that works for these situations. They could go to a newer place, but those places don’t resonate with the intention of the outing: the personal experiences and the memories.” The Fountain is located at 2329 Main Street in Tucker, GA, offers 10% off to public servants in uniform, including military. Providence Christian Academy: Lamar Lussi’s Legacy By Perry Rosenbaum Since opening its doors in 1991, Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn has been a shining example of the successful marriage between faith and education. However, Providence Storm teams have long been forced to play home games elsewhere due to the lack of space for their own athletic complex. After months of fundraising through donations, primarily from alumni, parents, and staff, and with the approval from the city of Lilburn, Providence has broken ground on the Lamar Lussi Athletic Complex. The school began life in a former strip mall, with the building that now serves as the high school previously housing a Lowe’s. As such, there wasn’t an acceptable amount of space for the school to build outdoor athletic facilities. When the basketball team – which practiced on the courts of surrounding churches – made the state playoffs in 1996, they were forced to play all of their games away, even the home ones, due to the lack of a gym. Furthermore, the softball team had to share their field with the baseball team. “We’ve added land as it became available,” says Stephen Daniels, the school’s director of communications (and a Providence grad in 1993), “to the point where we were finally able to purchase the land [behind the school] for a multi-purpose field, as well as a dedicated softball field and tennis courts.” This new tract will give Providence sports a home-field advantage for the first time in nearly twenty-five years. Everyone at the school is excited to finally have their own space, especially Lamar Lussi (pictured in green) himself. “He has his own jersey,” Daniels explains, “and he’s long been a consistent presence at Storm sporting events.” Lussi, now 83, was originally the director of facilities and transportation at Providence before being named director of encouragement based on his unfailingly positive, giving demeanor. He often calls past graduates on their birthdays, attends births and funerals, and generally provides strength and blessings to those in need. A highly respected member of the Providence community, Lussi remains surprisingly spry for a man his age, coming to work every weekday to make his calls and still finding the time to attend as many Storm games as possible. According to Dr. Jim Vaught, Providence’s head of school, the complex was submitted to the city for approval in 2012, and shortly thereafter it was dedicated to the indomitable spirit of Lussi. “Due to the long commitment Lamar’s had to the school,” Vaught opines, “as well as the impact he’s had on the lives of so many students past and present, he was the unanimous choice to be honored in this way.” Indeed, the school’s biggest fan is well deserving of this distinction. The complex, which will span eleven of the school’s thirty-five acre campus, helps Providence in their ongoing quest for improvement and achievement. After waiting several decades, Providence athletes and supporters will finally have a field of their own. It’s been a long time coming, but the school’s patience has certainly not been in vain. Sports Talk with: Ray Lail of Mountain Park Athletic Association By Perry Rosenbaum If you grew up in the Gwinnett area, there’s a strong chance you’ve spent a considerable amount of time at Mountain Park. It’s a truly fantastic facility, and that’s in no small part to the men and women on the board who continue to make Mountain Park a hotspot of athletic activity. Ray Lail, the president of the Mountain Parks Athletic Association (MPAA), knows that the people he’s surrounded by are crucial to the park’s success. Lail, who began at MPAA as the basketball director five years ago before volunteering for the vacant presidency in 2012, shares the passion of providing a safe and fun sports facility with his fellow board members. “I can’t think of a better group of people to be around,” Lail says. For every sport of the myriad that’s offered through the park, there is a corresponding commissioner who handles the day-to-day aspects. Furthermore, there are managers for IT, equipment, and concessions who are as vital to the park’s upkeep as anybody else. He also points out that the excellent quality of work allows him to focus more on making improvements where necessary. “Everybody here is so responsible. I know I can take care of the bigger things without worrying about anyone properly handling their business.” Lail says that the community has responded well to the efforts the board has made. “When it comes right down to it, we’re there for the children. We want this to be a happy place for them, as well as parents and everyone else.” Of course, the park wasn’t doing poorly in terms of traffic: Mountain Park has long been the destination of choice for anyone in the Parkview Continued on page 21

Getting Schooled with: Parkview Christian School By Stacye Carroll Parkview Christian School recently held its Mayfaire, an annual event enjoyed by many in our community. This year, in addition to a petting zoo, carnival games, and a jousting presentation, the 5th through 8th grade students staged a performance of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” As part of the school’s enrichment program, students also performed select scenes at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. Parkview Christian School is one of only five schools in the metro area designated as a ChildLight School. Since most students will attend public high school, Gwinnett County AKS standards are considered in the implementation of a curriculum heavily steeped in the Charlotte Mason tradition. Teachers use the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading, and students are encouraged to read “Living Books” which, according to Principal Cindy Nation, are books whose stories “jump off the page.” History is taught sequentially, and while technology is used throughout the school, focused study doesn’t begin until 6th grade. Principal Nation explains, “We would much rather see a real caterpillar than go online and see a picture of one.” Lessons in nature provide a unique opportunity to incorporate Bible study into the curriculum. First graders, for example, learn that caterpillars are young, just as they are themselves, and both will grow into what God has meant them to be. Parkview Christian School students spend a lot of time outside. Kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders attend half-day instruction in the belief that children this age should spend more time at home and in play. Lessons are short and lectures infrequent. Students are encouraged to move, and they do have an optional afternoon program for grades K-3 which provides plenty of opportunity for play and outdoor activities. Parkview Christian School is unique in that it is a Covenant School. There are usually less than 10 students in a class up to 3rd grade, and grades 4 through 8 may have up to 15. According to Principal Nation, a decreased emphasis on grading and awards “teaches children to work for the personal satisfaction of doing a good job,” and this, in combination with a nurturing environment builds student confidence. She adds, “Our students love coming to school!”

Up Close with Alcove Coffee: Coffee and Much More By Stacye Carroll Even before attending college, Cherie Johnson dreamed of owning a coffee house. She earned a degree in architecture with a focus on interiors and eventually began to use those skills in restaurants. Over the years, she learned a few things, so by the time she made the decision to open a coffee house, she knew the business from the inside out, and had the necessary contacts to make her dream a success. Cherie opened Alcove Coffee on Lake Lucerne four years ago, selling coffees roasted in Atlanta by Batdorf and Bronson. Local sourcing is important to Cherie. She uses mozzarella from Orobianco in Snellville, pastries that are baked locally, and herbs that she grows herself. This summer, Alcove Coffee will carry popsicles made by King of Pops, an Atlanta company known for flavors like Chocolate Sea Salt, Herbs de Provence Lemonade, and Honeydew Lime Zest. It doesn’t take long to see there’s much more to Alcove Coffee than coffee. Customers may order a variety of teas by the cup or the pot, with add-ins such as lavender, ginger, or local honey. Frappes and smoothies are also very popular. “Sometimes the blender runs non-stop,” Cherie says, adding she was “pleasantly surprised” by the popularity of smoothies. With five servings of vegetables in one cup, the kale smoothie is a favorite. “Some people just want to get all their vegetables at once,” Cherie explains. It’s not unusual to see a neighbor from across the lake paddle over to meet friends for lunch. Alcove Coffee serves a variety of Panini sandwiches made with artisan breads, fresh green salads, and chicken salad prepared by Cherie herself. Don’t have a canoe? Let Alcove Coffee bring it to you! Everything on the menu is available to parties of twenty-five or less and can be served on platters or as boxed lunches. Cherie Johnson is the owner of Alcove Coffee. Pet Perch: Dogs and Grief By Terie Hansen Dogs, like people, have different personalities. When a family experiences the loss of a dog, the dog(s) left behind will grieve the passing pack member. Some dogs grieve longer than others, but in general, compared to their human counterparts, their grieving process is less emotional and much shorter. However, if the human puts all his or her emotions into the dog that is left, the grieving process can certainly extend and may even create some behavioral problems. Here are some ways to help your dog grieve: • If possible allow the companion dog(s) to be present at the euthanasia. A mobile veterinarian can typically perform an in-home euthanasia, allowing for a peaceful passing in the presence of the other family dog(s). • Keep your emotions in check as much as possible. Easier said than done for sure! And yes a little extra TLC goes a long way, but too much can do more harm than good. • Keep a normal routine going. This helps dogs feel safe and secure, and helps them to relieve or keep stress at a minimum. Some added exercise will get a dog’s feel-good chemicals (endorphins) flowing, helping him or her get into a peaceful, happy state. The same will work for you as well, so get out and walk! This is a great time to introduce some training to stimulate your dog’s brain in a positive way. Perhaps some agility, nose work, or some good old fashioned basic obedience is in order. Dogs thrive on learning new things. Remember, time heals, and you and your canine companion will feel happy again one day, maybe even enough to open your heart and your home to another dog in need of a family. S.E.E.D of Wellness

By Julie D. Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC

The word “wellness” has become a worn out catch phrase that most do not truly understand. I looked the word up and found the following: Noun - the quality, or state, of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort. Today, let’s & stop for a minute and focus on simply planting the “S.E.E.D.” of wellness, Sleep, Exercise, Eating, and Drink. Sleep: Getting enough sleep each day is crucial. Our bodies have to recharge on a cellular level, and that only happens when we SLEEP. Sleep is not sloth! The organs of the body are on a time clock, and peak activity happens while we are sleeping. Hormones are produced while sleeping, and balance is restored to the body. Exercise: Did you know that your body was designed for movement? Being sedentary weakens muscles, traps toxins, and contributes to depression and heart disease just for start ers. What’s the best exercise? The one you will consistently do and enjoy. Eating: Our foods have changed over the years, from the way produce is grown to the processes used in packaged foods. Many of us have built up food sensitivities over the years and don’t even realize it. When you are sensitive to foods, inflammation develops in the body as well as digestive issues. Stick with fruits and vegetables and healthy fats from organic sources. Cut down on the processed foods and look for whole foods – the way nature intended. Drink: Lastly, drink your water! Our bodies are made up of 70% water and we WILL become dehydrated if we are not replenishing our bodies on a daily basis. There is no way our body can function well without water. Drink water between meals, when your body can absorb and hydrate the best. Plant the S.E.E.D. of wellness in your life and watch your life grow! More information at www.bodyofhealthandlife.com .

One could say Danny Gomez cut his teeth in Italian restaurants in New York City. At 9 years of age, he was cooking with his mother. By 13 he worked in a restaurant alongside his father. For the last year and a half, Danny and fellow New Yorker, Doris Zaino, have operated Fratelli’s Pizza on Main Street in Snellville. “We have the same taste,” says Danny about Doris. Fratelli’s menu, Doris adds, is a combination of the partners’ own recipes. “We cook the same thing here that we cook at home,” she says, “but we ramp it up for our customers. It’s about simplicity and true flavors.” “It’s all in the details,” counters Danny. “The vegetables on our pizzas are bite-sized and we spread them around so that every bite is the same.” Fratelli’s serves fresh food, not fast food. “Nothing is pre-cooked,” says Doris. “Food is cooked to order, more on the healthy side, and closer to the original Italian recipes.” Only fresh herbs are used to create their signature blend. While it may be featured in their name, pizza is just a small part of Fratelli’s extensive menu, which features seafood, chicken, and pasta dishes. Desserts are homemade and include New York-style cheesecake, tiramisu, and cannoli. Danny, who describes himself as a “plain person,” prefers simple pasta dishes, while Doris loves Fratelli’s salads and homemade salad dressings. Customers favor garlic knots and Bass Michelle, a dish featuring fish, crab, and shrimp covered in cream sauce over fettuccini and spinach. Upcoming additions to the menu include a Mediterranean and a Bruschetta pizza, Chicken Francese, and a variety of fresh veal dishes. Many items are available gluten free. Menu additions are customer driven and, as long as he has the ingredients on hand, Danny is willing to cook to order. “Lots of customers from New York request veal parmesan and veal marsala, so we are adding it to the menu. The other day I cooked pasta carbonara for a customer who said it reminded her of when she was a kid. We represent New York, where if you’re not good, you won’t make it.” The recent addition of beer and wine doubled Fratelli’s clientele. “It must be a Southern thing because we never saw it in New York,” says Doris. “But down here people want beer Continued on page 20

Learning Lessons: Prepare to START SCHOOL SHARP! By Carol C. Wood Woohoo! School is out for the summer, so learning can stop, right? Wrong! Summertime provides the BEST opportunity for students to enrich their academic skills if they desire to get ahead before school begins or to catch up on skills if they ended the school year below average. During the school year students who fall behind must catch up with what they have missed AND keep up with what is being taught on a dayby-day basis. This is difficult to do and can be stressful! This summer give your student the opportunity to do what he or she cannot easily do during the school year: CATCH UP or MOVE AHEAD and solve their STUDY SKILL weaknesses! To get started for summer learning, start out by locating your child’s recent school standardized test scores and school report card to determine how your child is performing compared to his/her school grade level. Any area in which the student scored below the 50th percentile or below his or her grade and month level indicates that the student was performing below average at the time the tests were administered. If the student scored above the 50th percentile or above his or her grade level, then he or she is performing above average. Summer tutoring

could include enrichment work to maintain skills or to further build on the student’s strengths so the student can START SCHOOL SHARP! Next, seek educational resources with a track record of success should you decide to teach your children at home. Purchase the appropriate levels of materials and teach your child on an established consistent, weekly schedule. Do not allow the student to skip around in workbooks and complete the “fun” pages first, as the material is purposefully presented in a sequential order. Select a study place that is equipped with the learning supplies and tools needed. If you do not feel qualified or do not have the necessary patience to work with your own child, you are welcome to contact me at Total Learning Concepts. I am a 36-year experienced, educational professional, and I will provide recommendations to you regarding your student’s summer learning experience. Remember, SUMMER is the most ideal time for students to get a JUMP START on the next school year and to start school prepared and more confident! with their pizza.” All beer is on tap and several are locally brewed. Danny plans to change the selection with the season. Wine is available by the glass or bottle, and there are plans to add a house sangria by summer. Fratelli’s has live acoustic music on Friday nights, and plans are in the works to add karaoke and trivia nights after Mother’s Day. Fratelli’s caters functions for schools, businesses, and private parties. The full menu is offered, and servers are available if needed. Usually a week’s notice is preferred. While customers come from as far as Lithonia, Buford, Suwanee, and Covington, Danny describes Fratelli’s as a “neighborhood restaurant.” Doris compares it to a New York pizzeria. “You know everybody and people come to hang out,” she says. “Regular customers become friends. We know their names and we know what they like.” Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., any purchase over $5.00 qualifies for free trips to Fratelli’s garden-fresh salad bar. On Sunday, in addition to the salad bar, there is a hot buffet featuring wings, meatballs, pasta, garlic knots, chicken fingers, and, of course, pizza. Danny Gomez and Doris Zaino are owner/operators of Fratelli’s Pizza. More information at https://www.facebook.com/fratellisNYstyle

thrilling, but the grind of the daily work is, to me, where the most hard-earned successes can be achieved.” This is not very surprising when you consider how much time and energy Godfree puts into his coaching duties. “My two hobbies are spending time with my family and coaching football, in that order. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy my down time, but I prefer to be doing one of those two things more often than not.” It makes sense, then, that Godfree’s strongest source of pride comes from watching his kids (both biological and athletic) excel in their endeavors. “Whether it comes in school, sports, or service, getting [the kids] to reach their full potential and become the best people they can possibly be is…the most rewarding aspect of what I do.” It’s this idea that a coach should be just as vital a cog in an athlete’s development as the athlete themselves, that makes Godfree so valuable as a steward of young football players. His faith continues to inspire all who come under his tutelage.

Catching Up with: Ashley Clemence and Graft Restaurant Since we last spoke with Graft in May 2014, Ashley Clemence, chef and owner of the buzzing restaurant in Grayson, has been hard at work creating new menu items, developing new events for community members, and continuing the Graft tradition to provide excellent service to all who visit. Brought up around her grandparent’s restaurants in Houston, Texas, Clemence was exposed to entrepreneurial business practices at a young age, and it was then she realized her dream – to own her own restaurant. After graduating from the University of Georgia with an International Business and Marketing degree, working for a law firm, and getting married, Clemence set out to achieve her dream, and in August 2012 that dream became a reality. Upon discovering the perfect location and undertaking a nine-month demolition project, she and her husband Seth opened Graft – a simple, rustic yet cozy family-friendly restaurant in the heart of Grayson. “This is a unique community that truly supports families and restaurants,” Clemence said. “I love the niche that Graft has embraced. Customers know when they walk through our door they will receive a special, unique experience.” Grafting in horticulture means uniting or bringing together, and that is what Clemence wanted to do with her restaurant: unite the people of Grayson through food, wine, and community. “I believe I have been given a gift of hospitality and loving people well through food, service, and simple encouragement,” Clemence said. “It’s about embracing people, where they are, in the present, for who they are, no matter what situation or circumstance they are going through.” Clemence, who purchases most of her

food from local farmers and ranchers, believes in supporting these family businesses, a factor that sets Graft apart from other local restaurants. The majority of the farmers she has cultivated connections with are located between Grayson and Athens. Developing these relationships essentially affects her menus, which change every six to seven weeks and always offer feature dishes or specials. Not only does Clemence own and cook at Graft, she also frequently caters and offers weekly and monthly events to keep the Grayson community hooked on her delicious food and large variety of wines and cocktails. Each Thursday, known as “Un-Corked Thursdays,” Graft offers $5 glasses of pre-selected wines. Every first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., wine and tapas are available for $20, and if customers stay for dinner, they receive 20 percent off an entrée. Last month, Clemence hosted her own secret supper club and was shocked when she sold out in 24 hours. Because of its huge success, she will continue this event each month for the first 30 guests who sign up. The cost is $175 per person and includes wine, appetizers, an entrée, and dessert. The location is always a secret, and is disclosed through a private email sent directly from Clemence herself. Though Clemence is living her dream, not every day is easy. It is difficult to manage and cook for your own restaurant, but she said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love what I do and there is nothing else I would rather be doing,” Clemence said. “It’s a lot of hours, physical, mental, and emotional stress, but to see the customers smiling faces and to be able to foster and nurture those relationships makes it all worth it.” More information at http://www. Ray Lail Continued from page 14 area who is looking to relax and have fun. The park has become so popular that the board realized they would need to expand their facilities. To that end, JB Williams Park will be opening across the street in the spring of 2016. An extension of MPAA on land acquired nearly fifteen years ago, JB Williams (named after the owner of the property) will house a new baseball field, playground, walking trail, and dog park. The most beneficial aspect of this expansion is a solution to the problem of space in the existing park since the major league baseball field is currently being shared between the baseball and football teams. Moreover, the football and lacrosse teams will now have their own space, which Lail hopes will lead to more tournaments being hosted at the park. Lail strongly encourages everybody in the community to enjoy everything Mountain Park has to offer, this summer and beyond. In particular, there are several baseball tournaments hosted by the association throughout June and July, such as the Panther Invitational (June 5-7), the Dixie Boys and Dixie Major State Tournaments (June 15-19), and softball camps (June 21-23, July 20-22).
