On the Cover: Catching up with Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. By Rachael Brice When we last caught up with Bill and Heather Preston and Chris Allen, the owners of Air Conditioning Experts, Inc., in the May 2013 edition of Our Town Magazine, the company had just expanded its reach to North Carolina and Florida, bringing the total number of offices to three, which included the Snellville, Georgia, headquarters. During the 2013 expansion, they added an additional 25 employees to make a total of 75. However, in the three short years since, the company has exploded! Now with over 170 employees and eight locations in six states around the country – including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas – Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. continues to provide excellent service and superior products to all its customers in each market. A Christian-based, family owned and operated business, Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. provides heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) services as well as installations for both residential homes and commercial properties, though their true specialty lies in working with real estate investors. “Our investors have supported us from the beginning,” said Heather Preston, co-founder. “We’re proud to have them as our partners, and we truly value their relationships. They are a big reason why we’ve been able to grow and expand into our different markets over the past few years.” And grow they have. While Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. manages the existing eight offices in six states, they have plans to continue to build the company in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Houston, and Seattle within the next 12 months. With these future new additions, new job opportunities will come. The
rapidly growing company has over 120 trucks on the road to ensure repairs, routine maintenance, and installations are completed in a timely manner. Even though Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. employees install approximately 8,000 new AC units across the US each year, they never stop striving to provide the best customer service and workmanship for the very best price. As high as its technical service standards are, the organization puts just as much emphasis and focus on the customer service they offer as well. “No other company can do it like we do,” Heather said. “Having just celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, we believe we understand the market, business ownership, and, most importantly, our customers. If they’re happy, then we’re happy.” Equally as important is the team they have in each market. “We strive to find the very best team members available in our industry,” said Chris Allen. “We recognize that we are only as good as the team we assemble, so we work very hard to create the best work environment possible.” Though Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. and the family value relationships, they value their faith the most. As active members of their church, the company puts a strong emphasis on giving back to the community. “Each year we collectively pick a charity or help with a fundraiser to remind ourselves what’s most important,” Heather said. “We are proud to have partnered with the March of Dimes, 104.7 The Fish, and Rare Cancer Crusaders to give back and bless others, as we have been blessed.” Over the last few years Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. has been recognized by numerous organizations for its outstanding service. Trane, a world leader in air conditioning systems,
awarded them the 2015 Top Ten Dealer award and the 2015 Top New Dealer of the Year award. The company was also awarded the Light House Safety Award for Excellent Safety Performance in 2014. Although the organization is pleased with all of its accomplishments, they’re also proud to provide heating and cooling units to TV and movie sets throughout the state of Georgia. Particularly, they service the Walking Dead houses on the awarding winning American horror drama TV series, and they also had the pleasure to work on the set of the American superhero film, Ant-Man. No matter who they are servicing, Air Conditioning Experts, Inc. continues to bring residents and businesses, both here and across the country, a helpful, family-centered service to all who need them. JUNE Love your lawn, all year long.
One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers
@RyanSauers
Would you like to improve your performance? Great, let’s begin. Imagine a blank sheet of paper. It is fresh, clean, and crisp. We can do whatever we want with it. We can ball it up, or scribble all over it. We can take notes, or we can tear it in half. The possibilities are endless. The only limit is your imagination. Imagine your life and the possibilities in front of you in a new way. In other words, think of whatever you are looking at with a “blank sheet of paper” mindset. How does your blank sheet of paper look now? How do you want it to look? What will be your first steps in addressing the piece of paper? Now let’s make the “jump” that the paper is either your own personal efforts, or the efforts of the organizations you’re involved with in our community. What can you do differently to improve overall performance? Where does your time go? We all have the same 168 hours each week. Are you happy with yours? What needs to change? When you embrace a blank sheet of paper mindset, you view things in new ways. You define the moment instead of letting it define you. You begin to expect the unexpected, which gives you a huge advantage as you are proactive. I am the type of person that is very interested in discussing ways to make things happen. If you want to improve badly enough, you will find a way; if you don’t, you will find an excuse. What greater place to make an impact than at home in our community? This is where we live, work, and play. Why not make it is great as it can be? And it is pretty darn good to begin with. However, growth starts with each of us… one by one. I love connecting with the person who is making notes right now on this blank sheet of paper – the person who feels some emotion to do something from reading this article. You see such people are often willing to try but simply are not sure where to start. And, guess what? That’s fine. We have to begin something/somewhere, and TRY. Character and growth is not simply about getting better, but it is having the courage to make the time, commitment, and the first step. Character is in the trying to grow yourself. And in turn, grow our community. Let’s make it a great summer and think of all we encounter as a blank sheet of paper. As always, and until next time… this is my town, your town, OUR TOWN!

Up Close with Georgia Christian Business Network By Michelle Watson In 2009 Elizabeth Bailey Copeland cofounded Georgia Christian Business Network (GCBN) with an initial focus on “networking with a greater vision.” When Copeland became the Executive Director in 2011, GCBN took on a new look and a new perspective. The rebranding process identified that networking was a byproduct of a greater vision and the need to Put God Back in Business! After decades of working in the corporate world, Copeland saw that honoring God was missing from most businesses including those owned by Christians. Copeland believes wholeheartedly that God has a plan and every individual is a part of it. That we are all created “on purpose for a specific purpose” is a message that resonates at every GCBN event. GCBN’s mission is to engage, encourage, educate, and empower Christians to live and work according to biblical principles in their daily transactions. The organization’s foundation is based upon ethics, engaging & encouraging, educating & empowering, and economics. GCBN is a community and relationship-driven organization that aligns itself with churches, organizations, businesses, and professionals committed to conducting business with Christian values. Their signature Business Empowerment segment delivered each meeting expounds on the Word of God through practical application for developing business acumen. Themed networking meetings and events provide a platform for business experts to speak on relevant topics to enrich the individual and to provide tools for business growth. Annual memberships are reasonably priced to encourage members to join other networking organizations, such as their local chamber of commerce. Sponsorship packages are also available. GCBN is a unique organization, developing synergistic relationships and partnering with organizations for collaborative efforts in meeting the objectives of each. GCBN is undergirded by God’s People Ministry, a 501(c)(3) organization Copeland founded in 2001 that gives back to the community through charitable giving. Copeland’s passion is to see people “understand how to practically walk out the Word of God Continued on page 22

It is often said that partnerships are like marriages, and the breaking up of a partnership is like a divorce. This turns out to be true. After twelve years, a construction related business that began as a partnership had to close its doors. The business was started on a handshake, with no written partnership agreement. Business was good, and the partnership prospered for some years. Then the first partner of the two learned that the second partner had incorporated the business without telling him, transferred business property to his corporation, and had issued all the stock to himself. All the while, the second partner was telling everyone that the business was a 50-50 partnership. But on paper, the first partner owned nothing. The second partner apparently believed he had pulled off a coup, and began to remove and hide equipment. It appeared his intent was to set up a separate business and freeze the first partner out. One thing about partners legally, they owe each other a “fiduciary” duty. This means the general partners owe each other a duty of honesty, good faith, fairness, and loyalty. Breach of fiduciary duty is treated seriously by the courts. The first partner filed a lawsuit, alleging fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, and conversion of property. He asked for seven figures in damages, punitive damages, and attorney fees. Statements were taken from numerous witnesses saying that the second partner always told people there was a 50-50 partnership. Thousands of documents were subpoenaed. Faced with this, the second partner agreed to settle. Our office was glad to get this result for the first partner. The first partner had always allowed the second partner to handle business affairs. Obviously, it is best for all members of partnerships or stockholders in small business corporations to confirm their arrangement in writing, and be aware of what information they should expect to receive on a regular basis about their business. The Golden Shears Project: Giving Back to Seniors By Karla Socci Somers “It is so rewarding,” Sonya Lloyd says of the work she does as an awardwinning hairstylist. She was one of Atlanta’s premier Olympic Stylists in 1996, and for the past twenty years she has worked and studied in some of the city’s most elite salons. However, Lloyd isn’t speaking of her accolades or her time spent making high-profile clients look good. She is referring to the volunteer work she does at senior assisted-living homes. Lloyd, a lifetime resident of Snellville and a graduate of South Gwinnett High School, is the founder of a nonprofit organization called The Golden Shears Project. Lloyd and her team of professional hairstylists, makeup artists, and photographers spend a half-day at a senior assistedliving home treating the residents to makeovers. Both men and women are thoroughly pampered with haircuts and a brand new look. After the makeover, they each get to model for Asa John Murray, the project’s volunteer photographer, and they receive a printed portrait to commemorate the event, free of charge. “The portrait is really the most important piece of our project,” Lloyd says. “We want to give the gift of a lasting memory to the seniors and their loved ones.” One look at the Golden Shears’ website and it is obvious how much joy Lloyd and her team bring to the seniors. The men and women in the portraits are glowing! They have their hair styled, they are dressed up, and Murray has created stunning portraits of each of them. The smiles on the seniors’ faces seem to radiate how they feel inside after having such a positive experience with people who compassionately shared their time and talents with them. It is typical for Lloyd and her team of 15-20 volunteers – her family included – to participate in each event. One volunteer stylist says of working with the seniors, “It is an honor to contribute my talents. I will always participate!” Lloyd says her grandparents were the inspiration for starting the Golden Shears in 2014. “Growing up, my grandparents were always giving to others; helping out; loaning people money, if they needed it. I knew I wanted to be like them and give back.” Continued on page 22

Gwinnett County Spotlight: QUEST Internship for Success! By Daidra Annis While the QUEST Internship program has been part of Gwinnett County Public Schools since the 1980s, the number of participants has almost doubled in size in recent years. To put it in perspective, the program has historically placed an average of 100 students in qualified internships per semester, but actually placed 185 students this past fall, and they are on track to place 200 students in the fall of 2016. As a result, they are looking for additional community members to serve as student mentors. A QUEST Internship is open to gifted-identified juniors and seniors from Gwinnett County public schools. The students must have reliable transportation and pass additional screening criteria at their local school. Students prepare a resume, and then interview with Mrs. Kristen Drake, who will also ask them to tell her what interests them about the company and career(s) they have chosen. As the program has grown, students are now tasked with the responsibility of doing their own research to explore what companies, and/or careers are of interest, much like adults do in the real world when looking for employment. Through this approach, the students have become more engaged, taking ownership of their decisions. Because the students can participate in QUEST from one to four semesters, there is an opportunity to explore different careers and companies in order to find a good fit for a future occupation. A recent placement occurred with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner, which was the first time that department had partnered with QUEST. Engineering, medical, and marketing are among the most popular career choices. QUEST is always looking for people in the community to serve as mentors in all career fields. Mentors often say that they learn from the interns, and enjoy shaping the future workforce. Students with QUEST Internships are released from school early each day and work an average of five to six hours per week for their employer, usually working two or three days a week. A time sheet is signed off by the mentor, and can include a mentor evaluation or student reflection. Mrs. Continued on page 17

With all the different anti-aging facial treatments and products available, it’s important to know which ones are actually effective. For example, the 24 Carat Gold Facial is a very expensive procedure that promises to improve texture, tone, hydration, and elasticity. This is a growing fad for those willing to fight for youthful skin, but does this anti-aging treatment really live up to the hype, or does it just sound good? I could not find any published reports to date confirming the efficacy of the products used in this treatment, only claims of unpublished reports by the companies who produce it. According to the Mayo clinic, in order for gold to actually penetrate the skin, it would have to be in a small enough size – a nanoparticle – to pass through. Most of what is currently being used does not fall under this category, which means the gold does not penetrate the skin. The Mayo clinic also warns that while gold nanoparticles can be absorbed into the skin, they are “highly toxic in high concentrations in mice.” This proves that gold would potentially be hazardous to our health, and essentially a waste of time and money. Here are some safe professional treatments and ingredients that can drastically reduce signs of aging : SPF, collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, C & E, peptides, massage techniques, LED treatments, Microdermabrasion, LASER skin rejuvenation, and customized facials that combine all these things, just to name a few. Keep in mind that it is very important to choose a skilled aesthetician who is highly knowledgeable, meticulous, and experienced in providing anti-aging services. You should be very comfortable with your service provider; after all, this is your face you are entrusting him or her with. So when you think of anti-aging facials, historically-proven remedies should come to mind rather than gimmicky fads that only sound good. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. So I ask, “How does your skin look?” Lisa Clinkscale Porter is owner of Unique Face Options, Inc. Travel Tips: Packing Light Allows Comfort Without Compromise By Karen Tanner-Holt My newest adopted travel philosophy is a commitment to packing light, extremely light! For two weeks in Italy, I packed only a carry-on bag. As someone with back issues, packing light can’t compromise on bringing items for comfort. Not hauling around a giant suitcase, especially when traveling by train, is extremely liberating, and much more comfortable and kind to both my body and my husband. When packing, there are the essentials, and then there are the luxury items which lend themselves to being comfortable. Everyone will have different “luxury” items based on specific needs and travel destinations. I’m all for being flexible and adaptable, but when it comes to comfort, I’m a stickler. My essential comfort items are my pillow, a washcloth, a hairdryer, and an extra pair of comfortable shoes. Some of you may identify well with my list, while others might think it strange. Let me explain. First, there is my pillow. With neck and back issues, I find having a familiar and comfortable place to lay my head makes sleeping in strange and sometimes less optimal beds much more bearable. Then there’s the washcloth. Every morning I start the day scrubbing my face; therefore, a washcloth is essential, especially since they are a rarity in Europe. Next, I bring my little travel hairdryer. While not as powerful as my full sized one at home, I find it much better than many of the ones I’ve encountered in Europe, which tend to be a box on the wall with what looks like a vacuum cleaner hose attachment that blows tepid air. Sightseeing with a wet head on a chilly day is no fun. Lastly, I pack an extra pair of comfortable shoes. Lots of walking and sightseeing can tire your feet out and literally rub you (and your feet) the wrong way. A backup pair can give your feet just the change of pace they need! All these comforts help make for a great trip. Karen Tanner-Holt is an avid traveler. More information at www.backyardtouristandbeyond.com.
Getting Schooled with Grayson High JROTC By Daidra Annis Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs across the country work hard to prepare high school students for responsible leadership roles both in and out of the armed forces. Close to home, the Grayson High School JROTC program (whose cadets are known as the Ram Battalion) recently enrolled 187 cadets, exceeding the Army’s highest enrollment goal by twentyfive percent. Promoting civic pride, and a sense of community in its students, the JROTC works to create better citizens through personal responsibility, service to their country, and a sense of accomplishment. Various educational units provide training in everything from leadership and citizenship, to wellness, first-aid, and map skills. The Grayson program also offers a competitive team known as the Raiders. This 10-person group is comprised of both male and female cadets who participate in hands-on training and challenges that increase physical fitness, build self-confidence, develop leadership, and inspire teamwork. These activities also promote healthy competition among other JROTC programs and schools around the state. In addition to the Raiders, the Ram Battalion also includes a Color Guard, the Ram Rifles Drill Team, the Academic Team, and the Leadership Team. The program is a successful and positive experience for those who participate. Of the twelve graduating seniors this year, one cadet was named the Journal Cup top student and received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, two cadets received 4-year ROTC military scholarships from the University of North Georgia, and six cadets have contracted to enlist with various branches of the military. Chaplain’s Corner: Showing Kindness in an Unkind World By Rev. Rodrigo Cruz As a parent of three small children, I find myself often telling them to be kind: be kind to your brother and sister; be kind to mommy and daddy; be kind to Joy-Joy (our dog); be kind to your friends at school, at church, and in the neighborhood; and be kind to everyone else. I can proudly say that they often try and they are successful, but the reality is that they often also fail in their attempts. I still remember the first time my younger son came home from daycare crying because another kid was mean to him. He told my wife and me every single word that the other kid said, and how this kid made fun of his tennis shoes and t-shirt, and how he didn’t like his ninja-turtles blanket. My first reaction was probably similar to yours; that it wasn’t a big deal. Yet, my 3-year-old baby boy was hurt and disappointed, and was experiencing the reality that we live in an unkind and broken world. It only takes a couple of seconds to watch or listen to the news to become aware of the unkindness that surrounds us: from presidential candidates attacking one another, to governments and citizens blaming each other, to countries invading and destroying one another, to individuals killing others for the sake of their ideologies, beliefs, religions, and/or fears. We live indeed in an unkind and broken world. But we have not been called to conform to this world. We have not been created to build and live in an unkind world. We have not been given the opportunity to strive for goodness so we can waste it. We have been given a life and a mission to love one another, to respect one another, to extend grace to others, and to show kindness to one another, regardless. I strongly believe that when Jesus said, “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you,” He wasn’t kidding. Not only did He encourage us to do that, but He actually showed us how to do it around 2,000 years ago. It wasn’t easy for Him (it cost Him His life), and probably will not be easy for you and me (not sure what the price may be), but it is doable. Every day since that experience with my son, I give him a big hug and a big kiss when I drop him off at daycare. I pray for him and tell him, “Gabriel, find broken and do good.” I know he tries and I know he fails (sometimes he is the mean one), but I continue to encourage him and to Continued on page 18

Travel Tales: Cuba – 68 Years and Counting! By Pam Walker I visited Cuba years ago when a window of opportunity opened in the 1980s. Fidel had taken over in 1959, forcing former President Batista out, so Cuba was closed off to visitors except for that short period in the ‘80s. I was young then, and the place seemed so sad and dilapidated. It is now 2016, and once again I find myself in Cuba – a country where the citizens of the US were not allowed to visit until now. This fall, six US airlines have asked permission to fly to various cities in Cuba. Cruise ships are planning stops, and hotel companies are getting ready to build on the façades of those historic dilapidated buildings. In Havana, where their capitol building was created to mimic our own, tourism is on the rise. Restaurants are opening daily with owners allowed to make a profit on their own. Private enterprise is permitted (with restrictions), and the countryside is awash with tourist groups. The Russians left Cuba in 1989 and everything fell into a worse state of repair than after the Revolution. When the Berlin Wall fell, Cuba collapsed, too. Blackouts were regular, and food and water were scarce. Today with tourism at an ever increasing demand, the Cuban economy is rebounding. Iberostar and Melia have opened large hotels. Locals are also opening guest rooms to tourists for a price. Restaurants and clubs are daily filled to the brim with visitors from across the globe. Not only are these wonderful old buildings blossoming, but museums, botanical gardens, and small cities in the mountains and by the sea are welcoming everyone. Old American cars serve as taxis everywhere. Many buildings are still very empty and in ruin, but all is changing fast. Now is the time to visit Cuba, before it turns into a place just like everywhere else! Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor. More information at pam@walkeradventures.com
One on One with Kimberly Goodloe: AHA Ambassador Shares a Hopeful and Helpful Heart By Kim Hill Kimberly Goodloe wears the color red a lot. As a member of the inaugural class of the American Heart Association’s Ambassador Support Team, Kimberly welcomes the opportunity to bring awareness to patients and potential patients of heart disease and stroke by sharing her incredible story of treatment and recovery. Unaware she had been born with a defective heart valve, Kimberly developed symptoms at age 42, including elevated blood pressure and shortness of breath which caused her chest to hurt. Four surgeries later, she credits her strong faith in God and the support of her loving family and friends for bringing her healing. Kimberly’s first surgery took place in February of 2009 when she received a mechanical valve. Four days later, she developed an irreversible heart blockage that required a second surgery to install a pacemaker to help her heart function. In June of 2010 she went for a routine follow-up appointment where they discovered that her pacemaker had a broken right lead, meaning a pacemaker revision surgery was needed. This past December, a fourth surgery was performed to replace the pacemaker batteries, a procedure that will be repeated every nine years. Through it all, faith has helped Kimberly maintain a positive attitude. “That’s why I am so proactive today, because of my faith,” she says. “Faith is the center of my recovery.” She realized other heart disease patients could benefit from hearing her story, and though she struggled at first, the sharing became part of her healing and made her feel good about herself. She saw others suffering in silence and wanted to reach out. “I feel I’m really on a mission, and I’m just thankful to God that I’m not afraid to use my voice.” Kimberly became a volunteer for the American Heart Association in 2010, and has been active in many of its programs including the “Go Red for Women” passion committee which focuses on Continued on page 17

Fitness Foundations: The Pitfalls of Fitness Trends By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT Our computer, phone, and TV screens shout about fitness trends, promising major results for minimal effort. In my twentyfive years as a fitness professional, I have heard all of these boasts and they still bother me. The claim that any one workout will alter your body type is bogus. You are born with your body type. No class is going to change your endomorph body into a ballerina ectomorph body. If you have curves at your ideal body weight, then you will always have them. Take note that this is an IDEAL body weight. You need to be the best and healthiest version of YOU. These trend classes are not without benefit, however. Any activity is preferable to zero activity, provided, of course, you are not causing injury. If you are having fun, go for it! Avoid attaching your goals and sense of success to their marketing claims. Over 40? Avoid high repetition workouts, as they cause over-use injuries. A good rule of thumb for everyone, regardless of age, is to aim for a FUNCTIONAL workout. Exercises should be based in four primal movement patterns: pushing, pulling, lunging, squatting. These make you stronger in your day to day activities. The internet has brought us “the challenge.” There is a distinct lack of muscular balance in these high volume single exercises. Doing 300 crunches a day for a month to work your abs while ignoring your back muscles is inadvisable. The best advice I can offer you is vary your workouts. Cross train. Do not ever stop. Make fitness a lifestyle. Hire an accredited, certified, professional fitness trainer to design a program for you. FUNCTIONAL. BALANCED. VARIED. SUSTAINABLE. Notice I didn’t say easy. That’s why it’s called WORKING out. Kelly Farris is the owner of Ladies Workout Snellville and the President of KLF Fitness. More information at ladiesworkoutsnellville.com

prevention, and the “You’re the Cure” network, which advocates for the uninsured. She also meets with Georgia state legislators regarding issues affecting heart patients. Most recently Kimberly was one of eight survivors in the country selected for the Heart Valve Ambassador Program. “As ambassadors, we are leaders in the patient community, providing local resources available on the website, sharing our heart related issues, and giving support, especially after they are discharged from the hospital.” Often, patients are not comfortable talking to their doctor or asking questions. Kimberly advises them to have a friend or family member present for support, and to keep a journal so there is documentation for appointments. In 2013, Kimberly created the heart collage passion project to celebrate her recovery and to honor every family affected by heart disease. Hand decorated paper hearts (about 1,500 this year!) are collected from those who learn about her story, and Kimberly, in turn, shares these with area hospitals to bring encouragement to adult and pediatric heart patients. She challenges them to pray daily, to be proactive about their healthcare, to focus on positive thoughts, to keep moving forward, and to never, never give up. Drake meets with students in the program two times per year, where they gain valuable feedback. For her, one of the most exciting things to see is a student’s growth throughout the semester. One success story deals with a student who is now attending Kennesaw State University. She completed her QUEST internship with a local law firm, and received a scholarship to KSU. She has since been offered a work-study position as a freshman, which is rare. QUEST gave her the advantage over the juniors and seniors who had also applied. But the internships are not just about employment and actual job skills. Students improve in the areas of communication and “soft skills” (punctuality, dress code, professionalism, etc.), and they understand the importance of finding the right career path and being passionate about one’s job. They have found that their mentors do not always love their profession. The same goes for students and the internships they have chosen, as some discover that the career they thought they wanted was actually not a good fit for them. It’s times like this that the program is most successful by identifying and guiding a student toward a career of passion and excellence. And, as Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Contact Kristen_drake@gwinnnett.k12.ga.us for more information

Grayson High JROTC Continued from page 11 has a trailer which is used to travel all over the state to various events, raising awareness for the program and the high school. Of 1,700 Army JROTC programs in the country, the Grayson High School program is one of only twelve in the United States funded entirely by the local school district and the community. There is certainly an advantage to being federally-funded, as those programs receive $20,000 per year to purchase uniforms and equipment, and to fulfill other needs that arise throughout the academic year. It goes without saying that the Grayson cadets are presented with unique challenges that most of their peers do not face due to the lack of federal funds. Cadets are looking to the community to help raise $11,500 for the 2016-2017 school year. Over the next few weeks, fundraisers will be held at various businesses in and around Grayson and Snellville, but they still need additional community support. Advertising on the travel trailer is just one way a local business can help. Sponsors may also advertise in the Cadet Handbook that all cadets receive each year. Individual or corporate sponsorships are also welcome for the Grayson Ram Challenge Raider Competition, hosted at Grayson on Saturday, September 10, 2016. Over 400 competitors from twenty high schools will compete in the all-day outdoor athletic competition. The JROTC Parent Executive Committee requires significant assistance to build a Drill Hall

Realty Reality: Now It’s Time to Move
Health Matters: Making Changes
By Mike Harper, Realtor
By Julie D. Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC
The good news is you’ve sold your home and are ready to go to the next phase in your life, or you’ve just purchased your dream home and are anxious to move in. It’s time to find a moving company! We all remember when a move to a new apartment or home meant calling a few friends (hopefully one of them had a truck) and bribing them with all manner of food and drink. The results may not have been the greatest, but it got the job done. With all the possessions we accumulate a bit later in life, we naturally put more thought and money into hiring moving professionals. Good movers can make your life better, and they don’t have to cost a huge amount. To get the best deal you just need a few tips, some the moving company won’t tell you over the phone. • If you want the best deal, invite potential movers over. In-person estimates are the way to go. • To make sure you’re getting the best deal, ask for comparison quotes based on hourly rate, weight, and distance. Hourly usually works best for smaller moves, but weight works better for the larger moves. • If a moving company asks for money before it has actually done anything, the amount should be nominal. A red flag is when they require a large deposit or only accept cash. • If everything is packed and large items disassembled, you will save labor and money. • If your mover blocks a fire hydrant and gets a ticket, you might feel obligated to pay it (it was in front of your home, after all), or they might even just add it to your bill. Those incidentals, however, aren’t your problem. • Movers usually offer basic liability coverage in the event your stuff is damaged, but that doesn’t mean they’ll replace your expensive antique hutch. See if your renters or homeowners policy covers damages from moving. • Most movers will tell you that if something is damaged, they’ll pay to have it repaired or replaced, but it may not be as easy as it sounds. When you call to file a repair complaint, the mover may have forgotten the damage and say it never happened. Take date-stamped photos of your prized possessions. • If you get into a dispute with the movers, or refuse to pay, they may drive off with your stuff. • To keep this from happening to you, make sure you go with a licensed mover. They’ll be on the hook if you threaten to file a formal complaint with the Department of Transportation.
Something that I have always found so interesting is how much we dislike change. Now you might be someone who can go with the flow and be spontaneous, but that is not what I am talking about. We all have our habits and get into our routines. These habits sometimes restrict us from “productive change,” the type of change that is necessary if we are to create a healthy lifestyle and quality of life. A healthy lifestyle requires quality decisions every day. We are bombarded with advertising, convenience, and ample opportunities to make bad choices. Making “a” change in those routines will help make “healthy” changes a lot easier down the road. What if we brushed our teeth with our left hand instead of our right, put our left shoe on first and then our right, or slept on the other side of the bed? Once we got in the habit of changing our habits, we could drink a cup of water instead of a soda, eat one green veggie or fruit every day for a week, or maybe park our car farther from the door so we could walk and burn a few extra calories. We would be amazed how little changes in our daily habits would shift our perspective. Getting out of our routines will force us to see ourselves and our decisions differently. It will bring our wellbeing into the forefront of our minds. I think we are like diamonds with many facets. Just making a small turn shows off a whole new aspect, doesn’t it? Things that we might have thought impossible can become very possible, but probably not all at once. Slow and steady wins the race! We have the tools to help us make positive changes. We have the internet, social media, blogs, tweets, Instagram, and the list goes on. How many of you use the fit bit? Wow. That little data keeping device has created a movement of health conscious people! All you did was wear a thing on your wrist that kept up with your steps and your sleep. Little changes make a profound impact on your life. Start today with a small, productive change. Julie Mills-Watson owner of Body of Health and Life, LLC. More information at bodyofhealthandlife.com.

Getting to Know Jestacia Jones: Making a Difference in the Community By Karla Socci Somers
SNELLVILLE
Jestacia Jones is on an important mission: she wants to see every child excel in school and in life, regardless of his or her financial status. For the past twenty years, Jones has worked as a holistic health and beauty expert for a variety of artists and celebrities. With a strong desire to give back to her community, and a belief that all kids should have a holistic education, Jones’ most important “celebrity” clients now consist of Gwinnett County school children. Through her innovative, hands-on program, E3 Lego/Robotics Club, Jones is making a difference for families that might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a holistic approach to education. “Enrichment and exposure are the keys to overcoming poverty,” Jones says. “We bring our Education, Engineering, Exposure (the 3E’s of the Lego/Robotics Club) program to Gwinnett County schools so kids can learn about robotics and engineering.” The program is geared toward elementary kids, and is currently at Partee Elementary in Snellville for second and third graders. Jones realized the great potential for learning and experiencing technology at a young age with her son, Alexander (now age 9). She recognized that kids could learn valuable lessons in problem-solving, communication, engineering principals, critical thinking, and creativity while they played with Legos® in a fun environment. Jones has the help of Georgia Institute of Technology engineering student, Angelique McCoy, who mentors E3 kids in their six-week program. At the end, they wrap up with a ceremony and celebration of the kids’ accomplishments. Jones notes that the key to their success in the E3 Club is parents. “Parent involvement is required,” Jones says, “so, it is a win-win for the schools because they want parents to get involved.” As a former PTA president, Jones has experienced firsthand the difference parental involvement makes in the education of young children. Additionally, Jones, an ordained minister, believes it is important to show parents what happens when they take time out of their busy schedules to devote time to their kids. Jones paraphrases a favorite encouragement by Ghandi by saying instead, “Be the change you wish to see in the schools.” Once parents see what their kids can accomplish, everyone becomes excited about education and learning, and with that attitude, anything is possible for kids, regardless of their social status or economic background. In addition to the E3 Lego/Robotics Club, Jones established the J’Lore Foundation, Inc. The Foundation partners with Panera Bread to provide food to underprivileged kids every week. As Jones advocates and implements, a holistic approach to raising children includes meeting all of their needs, including such basic ones as having enough food to eat. With donations from local businesses and parents, E3 Lego/Robotics Club will be offering a summer camp and “free-build Fridays” where kids can learn about science and technology in a fun, creative environment. “Our goal is to impact the children in positive way that sets them up for success,” says Jones. It seems she is doing just that, one Lego® at a time. Jestacia Jones is the founder of E3 Lego/Robotics Club and the J’Lore Foundation. and recognize its relevance in every aspect of life, transferring the ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ from church on Sunday to the workplace on Monday.” She wants to help people realize they are created for greatness, they are worthy of success, and they can overcome the obstacles to their success by implementing the principles found in biblical truths. GCBN has grown to include several chapters throughout Georgia. The Gwinnett chapter meets the first Thursday of each month for their Hour of Power, an hour-long breakfast and business training. They meet again the third Thursday for either a lunch-and-learn or an evening training facilitated by experts who empower small business owners and professionals. Copeland says she is always looking to partner with companies and organizations with values that line up with the vision and mission of GCBN. Anyone who wants to join a network of Christians and learn about topics that will help them grow their business is welcome to attend a GCBN meeting. There is a nominal cost for attending, and registration is available on the GCBN website for any meeting or event. Annual events include an anniversary gala; a magnificent moms day of ministry; financial workshops; the rise of the entrepreneur; a health day; and a God, Golf, and Girls retreat full of learning business empowerment skills and practicing golf swings. Sonya is one of them.” “We get back way more than we give,” Lloyd remarks. The Golden Shears Project team is always looking for additional opportunities to share their professional services with seniors all over Gwinnett County and beyond.
