Over the past seven years, I have been a Functional Medicine patient of Dr. Gravante. I initially came in to help eliminate symptoms with fatigue, weight gain, depression as well as allergies with great success. Now at the age of 65, I began to experience body aches, hot flashes, and weight gain after going off the estrogen patch. I was on it for too long and was experiencing side effects. With Dr. Gravante’s expertise in Bioidentical Hormone Balancing I have been able to lose 11lbs in 6 weeks and the body aches are gone! I feel great! —Cindy M. Age 65

On the Cover: Five Forks Academy Values an Earth-friendly, Hands-on Approach to Teaching Young Children By Heidi Campbell After years as a registered labor and delivery nurse, Ann Weeks decided to utilize her experience with babies and her love of children in a new capacity. In June of 2005, Weeks opened up what is now known as Five Forks Academy. For the last eleven years she has worked to make it a premier child care center, one where hands-on learning, safety, and earth-friendly living are the focus. Weeks is committed to maintaining a warm, structured environment, and has found unique ways to make learning fun. “We are always learning something,” Weeks says with a smile, “and if we don’t know the answer to a question, we show the kids how to find the answer, even if it requires Google!” Weeks recalls growing up and visiting her granny who had a garden full of corn, watermelon, okra, and other vegetables. She remembers picking the green caterpillars off the parsley leaves and watching the caterpillars grow into butterflies. She knew when she opened her school that she wanted to give kids the same learning opportunity. “The kids here get to do this!” says Weeks enthusiastically. “We grow green beans, snow peas, radishes, bell peppers, lettuce, carrots, rosemary, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, parsley, and wildflowers for the hummingbirds and butterflies. The children use watering cans to water the garden, which they fill using water from our 300-gallon rain tank.” It doesn’t take a visitor long to learn why the school is a Quality Rated school as determined by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL). The
school is clean and welcoming, and highly secure. Parents have keypad entry to the facility, and the school uses fingerprint technology for verifying identification. Options are available for ballet and karate lessons, a convenience for busy working parents. The school also recently partnered with “Stretch and Grow,” a program that introduces kids to physical fitness through games, obstacle courses, and other body awareness activities. This program will be incorporated into the tuition beginning in the fall. Five Forks Academy employs twenty-five staff members, including Director Royeka Stone and Assistant Director Paula Gaston, and enrolls one hundred and forty kids, with forty-five after-schoolers coming from surrounding elementary schools. For the 2016-17 academic year, the school will provide an expanded before and after school care for students at Brookwood, Craig, Gwin Oaks, R.D. Head, Arcado and Camp Creek Elementary schools. “This is an area where people value education,” explains Weeks, “People move to the area for the schools, so I wanted my school’s name to represent that.” Five Forks Academy not only values education, but the families and community as well. The school participates in numerous local charitable activities, including St. Jude’s Tike-a-thon and the local “Friends of Santa” program for the less fortunate. The school also supports their local families. One mother, Weeks recalls, fell while out of town, suffering a closed-head brain injury, and was unable to return home. The dad struggled to take care of his four children and also fly up north to support his hospitalized wife. “It was such a hard

time for this family,” Weeks recalls. “My teachers here were able to assist the dad and grandparents with meals, volunteer babysitting, and emotional support during that time. We also provided scholarships for two of their kids. Thankfully, the mom has been transferred to the Shepherd Center and is on the mend! We were so happy to help out.” The school offers programs for babies starting at six weeks, for toddlers ages 12-36 months, and for three year olds. They also have four-year-old classes, Georgia funded Pre-k classes, and a Private Pre-K for the older four year olds who miss the cut-off date to enter the Georgia program. The cost of their programs is considered mid-range, according to Weeks, but “… an exceptional value for the dollar.” Weeks’ passion for her children, her employees, and her work environment are evident. “I believe children need to be praised,” says Weeks. “When a child completes an activity, their art will not be perfect, but their art is beautiful!” More information at www.fiveforksacademy.com.

Happy Father’s Day! Our Town
From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers
@RyanSauers
Would you like to improve your performance? Great, let’s begin. Imagine a blank sheet of paper. It is fresh, clean, and crisp. We can do whatever we want with it. We can ball it up, or scribble all over it. We can take notes, or we can tear it in half. The possibilities are endless. The only limit is your imagination. Imagine your life and the possibilities in front of you in a new way. In other words, think of whatever you are looking at with a “blank sheet of paper” mindset. How does your blank sheet of paper look now? How do you want it to look? What will be your first steps in addressing the piece of paper? Now let’s make the “jump” that the paper is either your own personal efforts, or the efforts of the organizations you’re involved with in our community. What can you do differently to improve overall performance? Where does your time go? We all have the same 168 hours each week. Are you happy with yours? What needs to change? When you embrace a blank sheet of paper mindset, you view things in new ways. You define the moment instead of letting it define you. You begin to expect the unexpected, which gives you a huge advantage as you are proactive. I am the type of person that is very interested in discussing ways to make things happen. If you want to improve badly enough, you will find a way; if you don’t, you will find an excuse. What greater place to make an impact than at home in our community? This is where we live, work, and play. Why not make it is great as it can be? And it is pretty darn good to begin with. However, growth starts with each of us… one by one. I love connecting with the person who is making notes right now on this blank sheet of paper – the person who feels some emotion to do something from reading this article. You see such people are often willing to try but simply are not sure where to start. And, guess what? That’s fine. We have to begin something/somewhere, and TRY. Character and growth is not simply about getting better, but it is having the courage to make the time, commitment, and the first step. Character is in the trying to grow yourself. And in turn, grow our community. Let’s make June a great month and think of all we encounter as a blank sheet of paper. As always, and until next time… this is my town, your town, OUR TOWN!
Helping Mamas By Michelle Watson Helping Mamas is an organization that collects high chairs, beds, diapers, clothes, new car seats, and other baby necessities. They partner with social service organizations that give the donated items to clients throughout the metro Atlanta area. It all started with friends seeing a need and collecting items in their garages. They soon decided they needed more room, so they put the collected items in storage units. In November 2015, they acquired a 2,500-square foot warehouse with one full-time employee and several volunteers. Jamie Lackey, co-founder and CEO of Helping Mamas, points out that research shows an insufficient supply of diapers is not only a risk for poor infant and child health, but also for maternal mental health. Having been a social worker for fifteen years, Lackey knows what the cost of diapers sometimes forces moms to do. She has seen moms rinse out disposable diapers in an effort to make them reusable, with some leaving their babies in diapers for 24 hours due to the cost of buying more. Lackey looked around and saw that there was no concerted effort to meet the physical, non-food needs of children in metro Atlanta. Efforts were rather sporadic, with this church or that organization collecting and dispersing items to individuals in need on a very small scale. She decided there needed to be a more concentrated effort. Helping Mamas’ unique charity model has earned them much-deserved recognition, including the 2015 Spark Prize from United Way. The Spark Prize was designed to assist small non-profits with innovative approaches to relieving poverty. Since its founding just two years ago, Helping Mamas has already served nearly 2,000 children. There are many social service organizations in Snellville and Gwinnett County where clients can obtain the needed items that Helping Mamas collects. Some of those organizations are Norcross Cooperative Ministry, Street Wise, Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett, Family Promise of Gwinnett, and Good Samaritan Clinic of Gwinnett. Always concerned about moms and children, Lackey has even made her office space kid-friendly so moms who want to volunteer can feel comfortable working while their children are in the next Continued on page 16

Skin So Simple: Can a Facial Reduce Signs of Aging? By Lisa Clinkscale Porter, Aesthetician With all the different anti-aging facial treatments and products available, it’s important to know which ones are actually effective. For example, the 24 Carat Gold Facial is a very expensive procedure that promises to improve texture, tone, hydration, and elasticity. This is a growing fad for those willing to fight for youthful skin, but does this anti-aging treatment really live up to the hype, or does it just sound good? I could not find any published reports to date confirming the efficacy of the products used in this treatment, only claims of unpublished reports by the companies who produce it. According to the Mayo clinic, in order for gold to actually penetrate the skin, it would have to be in a small enough size – a nanoparticle – to pass through. Most of what is currently being used does not fall under this category, which means the gold does not penetrate the skin. The Mayo clinic also warns that while gold nanoparticles can be absorbed into the skin, they are “highly toxic in high concentrations in mice.” This proves that gold would potentially be hazardous to our health, and essentially a waste of time and money. Here are some safe professional treatments and ingredients that can drastically reduce signs of aging : SPF, collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, C & E, peptides, massage techniques, LED treatments, Microdermabrasion, LASER skin rejuvenation, and customized facials that combine all these things, just to name a few. Keep in mind that it is very important to choose a skilled aesthetician who is highly knowledgeable, meticulous, and experienced in providing anti-aging services. You should be very comfortable with your service provider; after all, this is your face you are entrusting him or her with. So when you think of anti-aging facials, historically-proven remedies should come to mind rather than gimmicky fads that only sound good. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. So I ask, “How does your skin look?” C

Getting Schooled: Principal Bo Ford of BHS By Anthony R. Socci If you ask William Bo Ford, principal at Brookwood High School, what gets his mojo moving, he’ll reply without hesitation, “It’s the students and the exemplary staff that gives energy, passion, and excitement to our school. We provide a plethora of programs that include Performance/Fine Arts, Theatre, Entrepreneur Opportunities (how to open and run a successful business), Band, Orchestra, and STEAM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.” Shortly after you step onto the campus at Brookwood, you’ll feel the tradition of excellence that permeates the atmosphere and has garnered the school a new state record for the most consecutive Science Olympiad State championships in Gwinnett County. Brookwood has won six straight, and eight out of the last nine Science Olympiad State Championships. If you’re in the cafeteria at lunch time, you’ll be amazed at the demeanor of the students as they enjoy their noon meal, mingling either indoors or outside in the Georgia sunshine on picnic tables. Does this sound like the high school you attended? Where many schools assign lunch duty to their teachers, Brookwood makes this an opportunity for the instructional teams to get together, sans students, for collaboration. Brookwood is not just about total immersion in academics and fine arts. Students are also service oriented. In the March to a Million 100K Challenge, as of this writing, $235,000 has been raised for charity. The Empty Bowl project sells ceramic bowls created by students for $10.00 each. The purchase comes with a serving of soup, and the funds raised are given to the Food Pantry. A native of Tennessee, Principal Ford received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee. He furthered his education at East Tennessee State University where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Arts and Teaching. Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, Tennessee, Continued on page 15

Eastminster Presbyterian Church: Spotlight on Joe Evans Respite Care Center By Anthony R. Socci From the moment you meet Jeanne and Helen of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, you absolutely know you’ve chosen the right place for your loved one to participate in safe, friendly, and fun activities while you get a chance to catch up on some activities of your own. With the services of the Joe Evans Respite Care Center of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, you’ll be given time to run to the bank, visit the dentist, do some shopping, or just relax and take a break from the constant care you’ve been giving your senior adult. Rev. Jeanne Simpson’s smile is contagious, and you just know that as pastor to Senior Adult Ministries Helen Wilborn standing; Rev. Jeanne Simpson seated at the piano. she will ensure your loved one will be well cared for in your absence. Rev. Simpson just didn’t decide to become a member of the clergy. Her journey began as Moderator of Presbyterian Women for the Greater Atlanta Presbytery and the Synod of the South Atlantic. This led to her involvement in Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly activities. Because of Jeanne’s exemplary work, the Presbytery staff suggested she consider a call to seminary, so in 2010 she decided to enroll in the Columbia Theological Seminary. After four years of study, Rev. Simpson graduated and was called to the Validated Ministry to Senior Adults in 2015 based at Eastminster Presbyterian. Continued on page 21

Living in Lilburn: Summer 2016 Promises to be Full of Fun in Lilburn City Park By Heidi Campbell Summer time in Lilburn is anything but boring, thanks to a continuous stream of events at Lilburn City Park. The city planners have over the last few years truly focused on making Lilburn a destination, and they have raised the proverbial bar with the plans for this June, July, and August. Foodies take note: the second Tuesday of each month is the local foodies’ night out, as the increasingly popular food trucks pull in to Lilburn City Park. The options are fantastic, and include everything from authentic Maine lobster rolls to burritos. Those who opt to eat in the park can enjoy live music from local bands. The dates for summer are June 14, July 12, and August 9. Locals can keep up with the line-up by “liking” the Lilburn Food Truck Tuesdays Facebook page. Lilburn kids can cool off and have a blast with this summer’s frequent Sprinkler Days at the park, where they jump through sprinklers from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The dates are June 15, 22, and 29, and July 6, 13, 20, and 27. Local athletes will have summer opportunities to race with friends and neighbors. Many will enjoy the Hiking and Hotcakes to Cure Scleroderma 5K race or walk to benefit the Georgia Scleroderma Foundation. The race begins at 8 a.m. on June 18, with registration open through the morning. Those who were hoping for a Peachtree Road race number but didn’t get one can register on July 2 at 7 a.m. for the Ruppert Landscape’s Peachtree Reject Race 10k/ 5K. The race is from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the City Park, with the 10k beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5k beginning at 8:15 a.m. Lilburn City Park will be the “place to be” for evening entertainment all summer long. On July 4, the city will host the annual Sparkle in the Park event from 5:30 to 10 p.m. This free event features the Glow Band, lots of food for purchase, and fireworks, which start at 9:30 p.m. On August 2, the annual City of Lilburn National Night Out returns from 6 – 8:30 p.m., where locals can mingle with local police officers, kids can explore fire trucks, and residents can be better aware of community safety. On August 5, from 6 to 9 p.m., Lilburn’s popular Rock the Park event returns, featuring 20 Ride: A Zac Brown Tribute Band. This is a free event. Dinner options may be purchased from food trucks beginning at 6 p.m. and the music begins Continued on page 20

One on One with Snellville Tourism and Trade: STAT! By Kim Hill “Go big or go home!” is Kelly McAloon’s motto. “I want our events to pop!” She is referring to the many happenings of the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association (STAT). Founded in 2010 to promote the city of Snellville, STAT has introduced activities that have become tradition in the Snellville community. Kelly was on the original fivemember board as vice president, and now serves as executive director. “We have been going wide open, creating events, having fun, and just helping to make this a wonderful community where everybody loves to work, live, and play. We could not put on our wonderful events without the help of our sponsors and our dedicated TEAM SNELLVILLE volunteers.” Looking forward to a fun-filled year on the new Towne Green, Kelly is especially excited about the 2016 Concert Series. By press time, the Memorial Celebration, featuring Beatles tribute band The Return, will have passed, but Live on the Lawn! will offer three more all new shows: The Ultimate Eagles Tribute – On the Border on July 16th; Rhythm Nation all-genre music on August 20th; and Journey tribute band DEPARTURE on September 24th. The award winning Snellville Farmer’s Market, boasting some 50 vendors, opens June 4th and will be on the Green from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday through September 24th. Popcorn in the Park offers free outdoor movies at Briscoe. New this year is Taste of Snellville, with an international flavor, arts on the Green, and Metro Jazz. “Huge” is the word Kelly uses to describe Star-Spangled Snellville, the annual July 4th celebration. Highlights include lots of food from local vendors, trackless train rides, inflatables, a bungee jump, a water slide, a watermelon eating contest, and cake walks. Principal Bo Ford Continued from page 11 was his next stop on the educational journey, where he added yet another degree as an Educational Specialist. Ford came to Brookwood in 2007 and served as assistant principal prior to his accepting the responsibilities of principal. When asked what he enjoys most when not at his principal’s post, Ford responded that spending time with his family was his greatest satisfaction. His wife, Rachel, teaches at Brookwood Elementary where their son, Will, is in grade three. Daughter, Ellie, is a seventh grader at Crews Middle School. Ford is proud of the extensive Brookwood programs. He pointed to the talented teachers and their personal accomplishments. This past year, Carrie Settle was named High School Science Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Science Teacher Association, Cindy Quinlan was recognized as National Teacher of the Year by the Association for Career and Technical Education, Jennifer Maloney was named Georgia Dugout Club GA Softball Coach of the Year, and Greg Puckett was named Girls’ and Boys’ GCPS Swim Coach of the year. With inspirational educators such as these, and with William Bo Ford at the helm, it’s no wonder that Brookwood inspires as well as educates more than 3,500 students. Pet Perch: Four Simple Tips on Dog Parks By Terie Hansen A hotly debated question that I am frequently asked is, “Is it okay to take my dog to dog parks?” My answer: “Yes and no,” depending on your dog. A dog park is for socializing and interacting with other dogs, not for exercising. Will your dog get exercise while at the dog park? Of course, but never take a fully energized dog into a dog park or you could be setting him or her up for failure. An over excited dog equals bad doggie manners, which equals a possible dog fight. Take your dog for a brisk walk before taking him or her into the dog park. Your dog will be calmer and better behaved, and will make better social decisions. Supervise your dog while there. Don’t stand in a circle chatting with the other humans, don’t be distracted by your phone, and don’t read a book. Pay attention to your dog, the body language of the other dogs, and if you see the dogs getting too excited or overly aroused. This will help you intervene if needed. Give your dog a time out to calm down and chill out every so often. If it looks like play is escalating to something more serious, intervene before a fight breaks out. Is there a dog that is trying to hump every dog around? Is it your dog? Intervene, correct, and redirect your dog to something more positive. Know your dog. Is your dog confident enough for a dog park? Nervous or anxious dogs have no business being in a dog park as they can become a target. Well meaning, good natured dogs can try to overpower a nervous, scared, or anxious dog because the anxious dog is in an unstable state of mind. It is in a dog’s DNA to weed out the sick, weak, or unstable from the pack. Your dog may be better suited to have doggie play dates with dogs it is familiar with until it gains confidence. Terie Hansen is Owner of Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care. More information at www.gooddogcoaching.com

is also a steward of those who work for him, guiding and training them to be successful members of society and to be better candidates and employees in the career fields they choose outside of Chick-fil-A. Daniels well knows the legacy of Chick-fil-A. He got his first job in the restaurant his dad has operated for thirty years. He knows that many, like himself, start as team members and work their way up to being operators. Some team members and leaders, though, don’t want to be operators. Daniels will obviously guide and train those who want to be operators, but his greatest goal is to invest in growing leaders. Most future employers of previous Chick-fil-A team members know they are hiring someone who works hard, gives a friendly smile, and says, “My pleasure!” at just about any request from a customer. When an employer or college board considers one of his team members or leaders as a candidate, Daniels wants them to see a leader, someone who is skilled in many areas of management and business. And he works one-on-one with each team leader to make sure this happens. Because he spends quality time with each team member, Daniels can cite from memory who wants to be a math teacher, which leader wants to operate a Chick-fil-A of his own, who wants to own her own bakery, and who wants to go into corporate wellness. He spends time cultivating in them the things they will need to know to run a business, like budgeting, controlling costs, ordering, profit margins, and writing business plans. Team members are taught to discipline employees, to own the results of the restaurant, and to properly handle a guest complaint. Daniels knows he is “only as good as the leaders he surrounds himself with,” and so he ensures each team member becomes a great leader. He has assigned a director for every aspect of the business. There is a director over profit, an HR director in charge of hiring, a guest experiences director, a quality/food safety director, a training director, and even a team member development director. Why so many directors? Because Daniels knows that in a multi-million dollar business he cannot be available to make every decision. The directors must also be empowered to make decisions. And Daniels’ methods work. He has been the operator of Chick-fil-A at Stone Mountain for three years. In that time, he and his team have taken the restaurant from just over $3.3 million in sales to what they expect to be $5.3 million this year. Daniels’ mission to develop leaders is very clearly succeeding with the help of and through the training of excellent team members and leaders. The Stephen Lee Band and Atlanta’s Contagious Band, will perform, followed by a tremendous fireworks show. Fall Festival will be October 22nd. This family friendly event offers a pie baking contest, hay rides, and costume contests for all ages. “The adults have fun with it and go all out,” says Kelly, “and we even have a contest for our four-legged doggie friends!” A big part of the day is the Scarecrow contest for businesses, churches, and residents. “People do it up and get really creative,” explains Kelly. “About 25 people have submitted applications in the past. We want to expand that this year. It’s a great way for businesses to participate in community while showcasing their business.” This will be the third year for the lighted Christmas parade. Over 4,000 people come out for this event, which starts on Wisteria and finishes on the Towne Green. Kelly says there is a real hometown feel with horse-drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, and the tree lighting. And of course, Santa is there. So is STAT the CAT. STAT the CAT is celebrating his second year as STAT’s mascot, and can be spotted at all STAT events. STAT’s Business arm is Snellville Commerce Club. Anyone may join as a supporter for $35. Classic members ($150) may attend monthly luncheon meetings. Kelly says, “It’s a great way to network, to know what’s going on in the community.” Business after Hours offers another good networking opportunity. Promotions may be found in STAT’s quarterly magazine, Snellville Spirit. “I’m excited about starting our 2016 event year on our newly renovated Towne Green,” says Kelly. “It’s going to be amazing!” More information at www.SnellvilleTourism.com
