On the Cover: Ready for Roofing: How One Small Company Became a Big Deal By Kristen Eleveld

In 2016, Todd Price established Perimeter Roofing, which began with one crew consisting of eight people. Shortly after, Raymond Little and Lance Noles joined the partnership, and today they use their thirty plus years of combined experience to ensure the best quality and client experience for every job they do. So, what is their secret to success? “Perimeter strives to maintain excellent relationships with clientele through honesty and integrity,” says Office Manager Elizabeth Rutland, who has worked with Perimeter Roofing for two years. Maintaining excellence seems to be the biggest priority for Perimeter Roofing, which puts a lot of focus on the customer’s experience. Between the company’s certified experts and their dedication to a job well done, clients know they have received quality services that will last for the long haul. “Our goal is for clients to be comfortable, involved, and satisfied with the process of their roof replacement from the start to finish,” added Elizabeth. The company achieves this goal by working closely with each client and treating him or her as an individual. There are no “one size fits all” solutions at Perimeter Roofing, whose clients have ranged in size from individual homeowners to large commercial properties. With a free estimate available, Perimeter Roofing takes the time to understand exactly what a client needs before deciding which steps to take first. “We pride ourselves on our crews and customer service, along with using the best products and equipment,” Todd said. “We have a knowledgeable staff that can handle any aspect of the task at hand.” Earlier this year, Perimeter Roofing partnered with Perimeter Cares, a non-profit devoted to eliminating school meal debt through paying off school lunch debt at sixty plus Atlanta metropolitan schools. Perimeter Cares has a dream that no child will go hungry, especially while he or she is trying to learn, and they have high hopes for continuing this program in the future. Giving back to the community is another big priority for Todd, and he has worked through his companies to give his team members a chance to show the community why they matter and

that Perimeter cares. “We strive to be the best in all we do,” said Todd, “and we want to help people protect their home.” More information at http://perimeterroofing.com.

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers

@RyanSauers

School is out and summer is here. Kudos to the graduates of 2019 and to the academic and athletic successes of our schools. Amazing! We should all be so proud of where we work, live, and play. Our goal is always to bring you the best in writing local and organic stories that never lose sight of our positive community and family focus. This demands a great team, and it is an honor to work with them. We have superb feature and contributing writers. We have an amazing creative director, editor, and cover photographer. Our accounting, customer service, and webmaster are second to none. Our distribution coordinator, print/mail partners, and digital media group do a terrific job as well. Our new website is under construction and will be ready soon. Well done team! With that said, we are never satisfied and are always looking to grow and improve. This is our goal each day, week, and month. Again, I may be writing this column, but it is the super team of Our Town that makes it ALL happen You see, we are not merely a “print publication,” but instead...a community connection point that people trust. Others may “sell advertising.” We offer value, expertise, and creativity. We grow your brand. You have a choice of where you invest your marketing dollars. Go with who you trust and who understands 2019 and beyond. So, the next time you are deciding where to allocate your funds, I suggest you ask the person “selling to you” what they know about branding and marketing. And I mean “all marketing” (i.e. content marketing, digital marketing, inbound marketing, influence marketing, social media marketing, integrated marketing etc.). My guess is that most know little beyond their own offerings and pricing. So, when you need help, connect with us and we will confidently walk you through the pros and cons of each medium, making the process simple and saving you time. People look forward to reading Our Town (in print, online, of social channels) each month. They trust it, pay attention to it, and spend time with it. We are excited about the future – and there’s exciting growth ahead! I wish you a wonderful and safe summer. And, as always, thank you for continuing with us on the journey of my town, your town, Our Town!

Congratulations to the Class of 2019. You made it! Many of you will now embark on the next step of your journey where you will move into your dorm, meet what will seem like a thousand new people, and begin to pursue a path of study that you will attend to for the rest of your life. It’s hard to believe it has been a year since I graduated high school. There were times throughout the year when I truly thought it would never end, but looking back retrospectively, it was the quickest year of my life! Here are five of the most important things I learned over the course of this year. 1. What’s meant to be will be. If a door has closed, stop banging on it! If something is meant to work out, it will. Maybe not right now, but it will. And if it’s not meant to, then don’t sweat it. You don’t have to have everything in your life figured out at age 18. 2. Don’t be afraid of change. In your first semester especially, so much change will occur. Everyone is trying to figure out who they are and settling in to who they are becoming. Don’t be surprised if the first friends you meet are not the same people you are calling your best friends at the end of the year, or if the major you have been set on studying for your whole life is not what you want to pursue anymore a few months in. Embrace change – it’s healthy and it’s exciting! 3. It’s okay to feel like you have absolutely no idea what’s going on. Although it may seem like everyone else around you has it all figured out and you are the only one who is lost, I promise that is not the case. No matter how put-together someone seems, he or she is likely facing the same internal struggles that you are. Continued on page 13

A Journey of Triumph: Meet Scott Greenhut By Pearl Aidoo “My story is not about weight,” Scott Greenhut says. “I am more than my weight loss, although I believe that my weight loss is the only reason why anyone has given me the opportunity to share my story. My story is about perseverance. Life is going to happen; it is how you respond to it that matters.” Scott’s journey to take control of his life began on December 11, 2017. His father had passed away four months earlier due to renal failure after seven years on dialysis. Seeing his father dead at 62, Scott was prompted to take a hard look in the mirror. And when he did, he did not like what the mirror reflected. With that reckoning came the resolve to do something about it. “My father had always encouraged me to lose weight because he did not want me to end up like him. But while he was alive, I had not taken any steps to lose weight.” But on this day, at 5’6” tall, and weighing in at 268 pounds, he started what was initially a 365-day challenge. This was an enormous task for someone who had never bothered with exercising. Scott perBefore After

Tooth Talk: Tap Water Best Choice for Healthy Teeth

• Seeding

By Janice J. Wilmot, DMD, MS, PC

• Fire Ant Control

Summer is here, and when it is hot outside, nothing can quench your thirst like a cool drink of water. But should that water be tap or bottled? Due to the marketing efforts of bottled water companies, many think that bottled water is better for you and purer than tap water. Recent studies show that bottled water is not a better choice, it costs more, and the plastic bottles have an environmental impact. Bottled water also has little to no fluoride present, which has been connected to an increase in tooth decay in children. The addition of fluoride to drinking water has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as one of the top ten public health achievements of the 20th century. By adding fluoride to water, tooth decay can be reduced by at least 25% in both children and adults. Fluoride is naturally present in groundwater and oceans and is added to our community water at the right dosing for optimal dental benefits. It is like fortifying other foods and beverages: salt with iodine, milk with vitamin D, orange juice with calcium, and bread with folic acid. So, what about other drink choices? The average American drinks more than 53 gallons of carbonated soft drinks and sport drinks each year, more than any other beverage including water. People who drink three or more sodas daily have 62% more dental decay, fillings, and tooth loss. Wearing braces and drinking beverages with high sugar content and acid levels can quickly lead to white spots and decay of the enamel if brushing is poor. Diet drinks are only slightly better, as they contain less sugar, but they are still highly acidic, causing a weakening of the tooth enamel. When considering the best option to quench your thirst and keep your teeth healthy, here is a list to help you make a wise decision. But again, water is the healthiest drink you can consume.

severed and ended up working out for 370 days in a row, losing 105 pounds in the process. At age 33, Scott is the only surviving member of his immediate family. He lost his mother to breast cancer at the age of 12; he lost his father in 2017; and on February 1, 2019, almost eighteen months later, he lost his sister Melissa to ocular melanoma after her diagnosis eight years earlier. That life changing day when he stepped onto his elliptical trainer was the beginning of a journey of self-discovery which he is still embarked on. The end goal was weight loss and improved health, but through the process he also learned lessons of self- preservation: he learned to take life one day at a time; he learned patience and sacrifice; he learned courage and determination; he learned discipline and focus; and he learned gratefulness. He began with 20 minutes daily on his elliptical trainer – gradually building up his workout and believing in himself – to his current daily workout of 6.5 miles and weighing in at 160 pounds. Community Business Spotlight: Remembering the Classics By Traci Sanders For years to come, every time I see a CocaCola machine, Remember When Restorations and its friendly owner, Terry Kimble, will come to mind. I recently had a chance to speak with Terry to learn more about his unique restoration service for this community. Native Georgians might remember when the company was situated in Stone Mountain several years ago under the name Remember When Collections. As the business grew and its focus shifted more toward restoration of classic pieces rather than the simple collection of them, Terry moved his shop to Grayson and rebranded under the name Remember When Restorations. Terry was inspired twenty-nine years ago to start this business based on his college major in history and minor in art. The first machine he restored was completed on the carport of his personal home. One of his favorite projects thus far has been restoring the very first Coca-Cola coin-operated machine and the first Coca-Cola cooler ever made. Two projects Terry’s team is working on at the moment include a customized Coca-Cola machine for Tiger Woods and the restoration of a vintage Coke machine for a contest winner to be given away to the public, sponsored by NASCAR and the Coca-Cola Company. In fact, Terry proudly mentioned that NASCAR is sending the necessary equipment for his crew to create a time-lapsed video of the restoration process for the prize machine. Continued on page 20

Getting to Know: Mending the Gap, Inc. By Pearl Aidoo Nine years ago, while working for the state of Georgia processing Medicaid and Food Stamp benefits for senior citizens, Fay Josephs noticed that the older adults she was serving were struggling to survive on their income, and the benefits they were receiving were barely helping them make ends meet. Although food stamps cover some food items, extra expenses such as transportation, items for personal hygiene, cleaning supplies, and basic necessities for daily living were not accounted for. Fay empathized with their struggle, and instead of shrugging the problem off as something that could not be fixed, she decided to do something about it. She began by taking small bags filled with toiletries and laundry detergents to some of the seniors she served, and when the opportunity to participate in a leadership program run by Gwinnett Coalition presented itself, she enrolled in the program and came full circle, equipped with the tools and knowledge on how to best help these seniors who were silently struggling with hunger, isolation, and neglect within our community. Already serving the youth through Sister Circle, a nonprofit organization focused on teaching teenagers leadership skills, as well as inspiring them to give back to their community through visits to nursing homes and volunteering at senior centers, it was clear to Fay that these activities had to be connected under one umbrella. The elderly and the youth are both prone to isolation, homelessness, neglect, hunger, and abuse, and bridging the disconnect between these two groups would tap into an invaluable resource that could benefit both groups. Working together would promote an awareness of the elderly for the youth to enable them to learn and relate to the elderly with respect, Continued on page 16

To the Class of 2019 Continued from page 8 4. Get involved with what you are passionate about. I cannot stress this one enough. College is the time to discover who you truly are as a person, and the best way to do this is to dive deeper into those passions that you never were able to fully pursue in high school. You’ll make connections and meet your best friends this way! It is so meaningful to surround yourself with those who share similar values and interests as you. 5. Have fun, but don’t lose sight of what is important. You should enjoy your freshman year. You have a clean slate and your first taste of true freedom! However, it is important to remember why you are there – to get your degree – so finding that balance between academic and social life, as well as maintaining your mental and physical health, is the key to your success. You are only a freshman once, and I promise it will be one of the most memorable years of your life! Don’t forget to enjoy it. Kelsey Sauers is a 2018 Honor Graduate from Parkview High School and has completed her first year at Georgia Institute of Technology on the Dean’s List with a major in Neuroscience. She is also the Correspondence Chair for her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha.

Pet Perch: Dog Friendly Restaurant Etiquette for Fido

METRO ATLANTA

By Terie Hansen With the weather warming up, opportunities to bring Fido along for the ride increases. Taking your dog out for social experiences is a great way to bond with your dog as well as put into action those commands you’ve been teaching him. Can you picture yourself hanging out on the patio of a great restaurant, sipping Mojitos while your dog lounges calmly at your side? Sound nice, right? Here is the proper etiquette to keep in mind if you are thinking of bringing Fido along: Friendly, Social Dogs Welcome: Don’t bring your dog if he or she is nervous around other people or dogs. You won’t have a good time, and neither will your pet. Take a Hike: Taking your dog for a walk prior to your eatery outing will burn off excess energy, which will result in a calmer, more well-mannered dog. Potty First, Pizza Second: Even if your dog went potty at home, ALWAYS have them go potty just before you enter the restaurant. This minimizes the chance for accidents. No one wants to see that while they’re eating!ATTENTION - Double check ad for ALL content. ATTENTION - Double checktoad for ALL content. Silence is Golden: Barking dogs are distracting and check disturbing You may be asked to ATTENTION - Double ad for others. ALL content. Choose Low Traffic Seating: While you love your dog (and anyone else’s), others may not. A dog-friendly establishment does not mean that everyone there wants to be greeted with a wet nose and a crotch sniff as they walk by. Sitting in a low traffic area helps your dog remain calmer overall. Bringing Fido can be enjoyable for you and enriching for your dog. Just be sure to be courteous and respectful of the establishment and of the other patrons around you. Terie Hansen is Owner of Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care. dignity, love, and care, while the seniors would also thrive from feeling rejuvenated and engaged in activities, sharing their experiences, and imparting words of wisdom and encouragement to the youth. Thus the vision of how to best serve the two groups dear to her heart was born, laying the foundation for Mending the Gap, Inc., an intergenerational charitable organization. Located at 52 Gwinnett Drive in Lawrenceville, Mending the Gap (MTG) is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization that assists seniors living in independent low income housing through the monthly delivery of food and other basic needs to their homes or places of residence. Fueled by the generous donations from sponsors and volunteers, MTG, which began in 2010 serving twenty-two seniors from a housing authority, has now grown to serve three hundred fifty plus seniors within our community. Every second Saturday of the month, a personalized bag tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual is filled with fresh food items such as potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, fruit, eggs, breakfast items, canned or fresh meat, toiletries such as toilet paper, paper towels, disposable underwear, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, lotion, and cleaning supplies such as trash bags, disinfectant

wipes, laundry detergent, etc., and are delivered to their homes. Besides the provision of food and supplies, MTG acts like an extended family by being accessible, making calls to and taking calls from the seniors they serve, visiting them, celebrating holidays and birthdays, and simply honoring and serving them with love and dignity. Through the adoption of a senior assisted living facility, the teenagers in the program spend time at these facilities engaging in social activities, chatting, playing games, painting, and creating pampering sessions for make-overs, massages, and a lot more. The relationship between these two groups promotes friendship, respect, and love. Fay has always given back to the community, and when asked what inspires her, she lights up and says, “Being able to do something about something, and motivating others to give back gives me joy and motivates me. Mending the Gap is a testament of what God can do using ordinary people to do extraordinary things.” Fay Josephs is the Founder and Executive Director of Mending the Gap Inc. Making a Difference: Karing for Kids

By Kristen Eleveld Everyone can agree that at-risk youth are in need of support, care, and compassion – and one organization, Kares 4 Kids, has found a way to not only help at-risk kids survive, but to help them thrive. Founded in 2005, Kares 4 Kids has spent over a decade fulfilling its goal of trying to prevent at-risk children from slipping through the cracks. Children who are dealing with issues like hunger, illiteracy, homelessness, domestic violence, and a multitude of other struggles are the main focus for those volunteering at this organization. “We want to help kids who aren’t whole,” said Marci Fair, creator of Kares 4 Kids. “My heart breaks for these kids. Their situations are not their fault, and they need our help.” Creating a program like Kares 4 Kids was a dream of Marci’s for over fifteen years before it finally became a reality. Marci and her husband Bryan started Keller Williams (KW) Realty Atlanta Partners, and it is through that organization that the Kares 4 Kids program was able to get its footing and begin to make a real impact on local youth. “I’m working with amazing people,” Marci said of her co-workers. “The need is in all of our communities, and they want to make a difference. I’m very thankful we have so many people who want to help these children.” The KW Realty Atlanta Partners team supports Kares 4 Kids by filling book bags with school supplies, feeding hungry children, repairing old facilities that are housing children, donating teddy bears to those who are ill or traumatized, and donating books to schools, charities, and libraries. In fact, it is the agents working at KW Realty Atlanta Partners who make up one of three “Levels of Win,” which Marci uses to determine whether the Kares 4 Kids efforts are truly successful. Level one is, of course, meeting the needs of at-risk children. This means fulfilling their mission

Meet Scott Greenhut Continued from page 10 paying attention to his calorie intake. Scott’s weight loss has resulted in the overall improved health of body, mind, and spirit. His sleep apnea has been reversed. In October 2017 a sleep study revealed that he stopped breathing 105 times an hour. This past March, the sleep study results were 3.5 times an hour. Determined not to let his personal loss define him, Scott believes that his experience places him in a position to share with others what it means to dig deep and fight for your life and what you believe when the going gets tough. Being overweight had promoted in him a sense of selfpity in the past, but now he is about being that voice that uplifts others. His story is a testament to hope and overcoming obstacles; to rise instead of succumbing when it seems like the odds are stacked against you. When asked how to start taking control, he says with a cheerful and upbeat tone, “Start small; do the little things every day, like making your bed every morning. As simple as it may be, it promotes a sense of accomplishment. My philosophy now is to go 1-0 every day. It’s a win for anything that you like to do.” His favorite self-coined quote is, “Don’t wait for something negative to happen in your life for you to make the positive change you always think about.” Scott has shared his story on Fox 5 Atlanta, as well as at the Annual Enlight Conference through the Brookwood community, at Brookwood High School Boys Varsity Basketball, and Buford High School JV and 9th grade Basketball teams. Through loss and heartache came the call to service. As an aspiring inspirational speaker, Scott wants to share his life story to encourage others to believe that you don’t have to be defined by your circumstances. Scott Greenhut shares his life experience on Instagram @scottgreenhut44. More information at scottagreenhut@gmail.com

Who Would You TRUST? By Pearl Aidoo It’s the ultimate interactive party card game for adults and a fantastic social ice-breaker. It’s a game that very quickly gets everyone talking and laughing with questions like, “Who would you trust to lead you through a minefield blindfolded?” Or “Who would you trust to shave your body in places you can’t reach?” The objective of the game is to get five cards to win. Right off the bat, the person you actually trust in the group is eliminated from your choice, so now with a timer ticking away, you have a group of people creatively persuading you to trust them instead as they try to weed out the competition. Suddenly, the room is filled with excited voices, sounds of laughter, and fun. Everyone in the group is engaged and getting to know each other. Jordan Eugene is the creator and designer of the card game Who Would You TRUST? Back in August of 2018 an old friend from high school asked Jordan to accompany him to a dingy bar. Given the lengthy passage of time and the lack of communication between them, Jordan wouldn’t even trust said friend with getting him a glass of water. However, instead of voicing his thoughts, he politely declined. Later on as he considered the situation, Jordan thought, “Who would I trust to accompany to a dingy bar… or get me a glass of water?” Thinking it was a funny and interesting question to ask a group of his peers – “Who do you trust?” – an idea began to form. He ran it by his mother Lisa, who as an entrepreneur and business owner has always encouraged her children to develop an entrepreneur’s mindset. Lisa immediately honed in on his vision, and helped him develop the concept. After months of tweaking, testing, and perfecting the idea, an engaging and hilarious party card game is now available for your entertainment. A native of Grayson, twenty-seven-year-old Jordan is a product of both Grayson and Archer High Schools, and a graduate of Savanna College of Art & Design (SCAD) with a degree in animation and illustration. Jordan is a very talented, fun loving young man, who enjoys meeting and interacting with people. When asked what excites him about the game he says, “The sheer pleasure of seeing a group of people animated and having fun.” Jordan is inspired by the idea of “getting people to talk again,” and through this engaging and interactive game, he hopes to draw people away from their electronics, social media, texting, emails, etc., even if it’s just for a moment, and get them to engage, relax, talk, and enjoy the real life company around them. Remembering the Classics Continued from page 11 Becoming endorsed by the Coca-Cola Museum and Archives definitely helped put Terry’s work on the map. He began receiving project requests from celebrities such as President Jimmy Carter, Alec Baldwin, Truett Cathy, and Jon Lester (pitcher for the Chicago Cubs). Some perks of these customer relationships include restoring vintage Coke machines that were flown to Istanbul and Moscow to be placed in the Coca-Cola museums. Terry was even able to meet Prince Charles. Terry admits that he struggled for twenty years, employing various outlets to advertise his services – radio, television, magazines, etc. But in the end, he attributes his loyal customer base to word-of-mouth referrals. When asked what one word Terry would like to be on the top of folks’ minds when they see his brand, he simply replied, “Quality,” adding, “I’d rather explain the price than apologize for the quality.” If you are in the market for the restoration of a Coca-Cola Machine or another classic piece of equipment, be sure to give Terry Kimble and his crew a call. They will deliver on your request with excellence and restore your faith in service with a smile. More information at http://www.rememberwhenrestorations.com/
