On the Cover: All Aboard the ART Station in Stone Mountain By Kristen Eleveld Stone Mountain has long since gained a reputation for being home to many famous and exciting attractions. However, once you take a closer look at this booming city, you will also find some hidden gems that are waiting to welcome you inside. Places like the ART Station in Stone Mountain are full of exciting opportunities – and they are inviting you to join in and learn more. Founded in 1986 by David Thomas and Michael Hidalgo, the ART Station has a simple but important goal: to become a place where all artists can come together and develop their talents. There is no limit to the type of art you may find inside the ART Station – everything from visual art to dance teams to theatre productions are available in spades to the hundreds of artists who take advantage of the resources and opportunities that the ART Station offers. Those hundreds of artists showcase their work for an average of 40,000 people every year. Much of that number is comprised of those coming to see one of the many theatre productions that take place at the ART Station each year, along with the numerous art gallery attendees and students in the multiple classes available for the community. The theatre in particular places a priority on showcasing new or lesser-known work, in an effort to shine some light on excellent plays or shows that may otherwise go unnoticed. David adapts many of the plays himself from popular books or snippets he hears from the radio. The result is a fresh, interesting perspective that gives theatre-goers an opportunity to experience something new. At its core, the ART Station’s goal is to create a safe space for artists, as well as to help them define and develop their talent. “We want this space to be an arena of goodwill – people of all backgrounds can have an experience here,” said David. One way the ART Station helps people of all backgrounds find their artistic niche is to

offer classes and summer camps, with options for young kids all the way to adults. Those who participate in the classes are given the chance to practice their skills in a professional setting while still having the room to make mistakes, change their minds, and ultimately discover where their talents and interests lie. In the summer, there are multiple options for children and adults. Pottery, dance, music, and writing are just some of the artistic endeavors the participants can undertake. There is even a two-week intensive in which the youth and teens at the camp learn an entire performance in just two weeks, and then perform it for either their family and friends, or at local day care facilities. What makes these classes so unique is that the ART Station is all about developing the right side of every camper’s and student’s brains, where creativity is born. This means that kids learn about visual arts through activities like designing their own bedroom, and learn dramatic arts techniques through playing games. They may not even realize what they’re Continued on page 15

Man, I love this time of the year. Spring is almost here. We have had a lot of rain the past couple months; however, with a new season comes new beginnings. I look forward to more sunshine and warmer days. In the spring, the days are longer, and people are out later doing great things. There are so many positive things happening in the cities and communities we serve. There is simply no way I can list them all, but rest assured the change is real, amazing, and positive. The world recently stopped, mourned, and celebrated the life of superstar Kobe Bryant and his beautiful daughter Gigi Bryant (among other precious lives) who were tragically taken from this earth in an instant. How could people who were just living their everyday lives (with friends and family) be taken from us so suddenly? People who were so young, vibrant, and healthy. I write this to remind us that life and death are real, and it does not matter if you are healthy or sick; young or old. There simply are no guarantees. Not one of us knows how many days, months, or years we have left on this earth. Our time is a gift and what we do with it matters. We must live with a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude. We can get distracted and focus on things that do not matter. I say this to myself and to you... let it go. Such things are NOT life and death and simply do not matter. Do you want to make your time on this earth count and create a legacy to make things better for others? I hope so, as we all have a legacy. The question is what people remember about our lives – and how they Continued on page 8

Principal of the Year: Meet Dr. Julie Broom of St. John Neuman

A Different Paint Experience! Call us today for your free consultation!

By Kristen Eleveld

Dr. Julie Broom has only been the principal of St. John Neumann Regional Catholic School for two and a half years. But in that short time, she has made a big difference for the hundreds of students in her care. In fact, she has had such a positive influence on her students that she was just named Principal of the Year for the 2019-2020 school year. St. John Neumann is one of twenty-three Catholic schools in the Office of Catholic Schools under the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Dr. Broom was informed that she had been selected as Principal of the Year in early October. The staff and students managed to surprise her the next Monday with a celebration and a banner made for her by her teachers, congratulating Dr. Broom on her recent honor. For Dr. Broom, the award is nice, but her main focus is on her school and on her students. St. John Neumann is home to a diverse population of students, with over a dozen countries and over thirty languages represented by those who walk through its doors. It is this diversity that provides St. John Neumann with a rich culture and heritage, which is one of the qualities that Dr. Broom loves best about her school. “Our students come from all over the world, and they and their parents have creYour fully insured, ated a giving and loving community,” said premium paint company. We see the whole child.” Of course, no school can be successful without the help of parents. Exceptional Foundation: Making a Difference in Gwinnett

1/2 price well pet exam for new clients

By Beth Volpert Johansen Exceptional is a word that can be used to paint a broad descriptive spectrum. The word alone can be uttered with a little accompanying breathlessness when the speaker is presented with something or someone beyond expectations. It is especially appropriate when one first meets the three founders of the Exceptional Foundation of Atlanta (EFATL): Susan Keeney, Director of Programming, Renee Smith, Director of Marketing and Development, and Lauren Marks, Executive Director. All three took a leap of faith, cutting down from full time teaching and therapy positions with stable incomes to work part time with adult children with special needs, based on their love of God. They each knew their calling and heeded. “I am a firm believer that everyone has a purpose and I thoroughly enjoy helping young adults discover that purpose,” says Susan. “I also believe that building strong relationships with others greatly increases quality of life.” These special educators with many years of experience between them had one thought that kept rising to the top of conversation: “Where will our students go once they turn 22?” When students “age out” of the school system, families are faced with the opposite of “empty nesters.” Huge adjustments and new needs often present themselves with, sometimes, few options. The question of what to do weighed on the trio until they placed their desires into prayer. What followed became a renewed passion for service to the exceptional population in and around their home base at Grace Church in Snellville. “We are so grateful to Grace because they have generously provided us space in the D House,” says Renee. “We saw a need and prayed for space; we were welcomed by Grace.” From D House just off Dogwood Road in Snellville, the participants in EFATL plan their moves. What the casual observer might see are groups of people defined by their exceptionalities. But in reality the group is far from being defined by limits; they are driven by them. “The idea of this program is for our participants to decide what they want to do within a group of friends – just like any other young adult,” says Susan. “They want to go hang out at the mall, have a meal, laugh, play games. You know, just hang out.” As the program has matured and the participants have worked out plans for their weekly events, they have found that some of their personal goals are being met. For instance, the group topic one day was all about transportation. With a little research and help from Lauren, the group decided to check out Olli, the driverless car located in Peachtree Corners. From there, with their transportation interests peaked, the group set out with the staff to go van shopping. “This is an area of our greatest need right now,” says Susan. “We are limited by our current vehicles as to the number of participants we can serve and transport.” Like many programs, the need for funding is constant, and transportation is very important to all those connected to the Exceptional Foundation because, beyond heading out just to “hang out” is the heart and soul of each outing – the giving back part. One such extension of the Exceptional Foundation is the participant-led programs serving Calvin Cove, a local non-profit housed in Westminster Presbyterian Church that provides respite care for Continued on page 12

Gwinnett Splashes Worldwide Color By Beth Volpert Johansen Gwinnett’s diverse nature is reflected in the faces of the county’s schoolchildren, business owners, and residents. With many different cultures and languages represented, it is no surprise that some of the strongest community leaders in the county are also reflective of our worldly population. Of those leaders Rony Delgarde, Founder and CEO of Global Paint for Charity, stands tall, strong, and proud. A native of Haiti, Rony arrived in America via the Miami International Airport over a decade ago with five dollars, a Bible, and a dream to educate himself with his eyes on a career path that would change, not only himself, but would also affect the world as a whole. Today, Rony heads Global Paint, a paint recycling non-profit headquartered in Gwinnett County that repurposes unused paint for projects world-wide. “I love Gwinnett County,” says Rony. “We receive tremendous support from the county government and the residents.” Much of the support Rony and Global Paint has received has come from Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful. Guided by leadership that represents the entire county, Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful seeks to foster and cultivate a community of environmental stewards in support of improving the water, land, air, and lives. “Schelly Marlatt was the first person I actually met with,” says Rony. “My English wasn’t that great, but I told them what I wanted to do; I told them my vision – to recycle paint and help brighten up the world and make a huge difference.” Schelly remembers the energy and vision with which Rony approached the idea of using recycled paint to make a difference in the world. “Over the last eight years, I have enjoyed watching Rony put his passion into action,” says Schelly. “He is one of the most humble hardworking people I know who not only helps save the planet by recycling unwanted paint, but he spreads love, hope, and color all over the world to places that do not have the resources to do so.” Spreading love and hope are wrapped up in the colors of the paints Rony collects and ships all over the earth to third world countries that put those gallons to great use. Brightening up neighborhoods is the most visible effect. But beneath the surface is a more

profound effect of the paint. “In some cases, painting helps lower the mold and bacteria levels that are so harmful,” says Rony. “We are working with the CDC on a project to help with mosquito control in some areas – it is very exciting.” In addition to the benefits to the health of a population, paint can uplift the spirit and strength of entire villages and towns. Aside from the obvious beauty of painting a home, the value goes much deeper. “There is a whole town in Mexico we work with that was filled with crime and the people had so little peace,” describes Rony. “We partnered with them and brought them paint; it made such a difference you would not believe!” That difference is not only in the appearance of the town, but their ability to be proud of their homes and Continued on page 13

Making the Right Choice for Education

COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENTAL CLINIC COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENTAL CLINIC COMPREHENSIVE COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DEVELOPMENTAL CLINIC CLINIC

By Kristen Eleveld Living in a county like Gwinnett means you have dozens of options for education, but how do you know which path is the right one for your child? For many parents, there is only one right choice: Choice Educational Academy (CEA) in Stone Mountain. CEA isn’t just another school – it has taken the extra step to combine traditional learning with alternative methods to give each child a unique experience that both works within any challenges and encourages new exploration in education. The leader of this educational charge to victory is Nancy Gordeuk, whose considerable experience in the teaching field makes her a natural success at running a school like CEA. It all began fifteen years ago, when Nancy was searching for the right educational fit for her son, who was struggling with dyslexia and an auditory processing disorder. As a teacher herself for many years, Nancy recognized that, while her son was more than capable of learning the material he needed to know, the traditional school system was not able to give him the tools and guidance he needed to work with his difficulties. This prompted Nancy to begin homeschooling her son – and Choice Educational Academy was born. Word spread quickly through the community, and soon Nancy found herself tutoring local students, as well as helping them with credit recovery in order to earn their high school degree. “People know I love kids, and that I just want to help them succeed,” said Nancy. With more and more regular students coming to learn, Nancy knew she would need a bigger space to accommodate everyone. The school operated in a building in Lilburn for some time, and when they outgrew that space, Nancy found another building that was available in Stone Mountain. In 2012, Choice Educational Academy officially opened its doors to the public, inviting all types of learners to join them. CEA is distinct among its peers for many reasons, but especially with its excellent teacher/student ratios. Each classroom only has between eight to 10 students, and if their number begins to grow, CEA works to open a new classroom instead of just adding more students to existing classes. This allows each teacher to offer one-on-one time with each student and work with them to overcome his or her particular challenge. This model means every student has a high chance of success as each begins to understand how he or she learns and how that can be applied to the classroom. Smaller class sizes also allow Nancy to be more hands-on with each student in her school, so much so that kids often seek her out to tell her about their day or to ask her questions. “I love to see the kids and hear about what’s going on in their lives,” said Nancy. “I see everyone’s grades daily, and am able to guide them through which steps they need to take next if they want to succeed.” CEA also offers a program specifically designed to help students improve their reading and catch up to the reading level of their peers. Led by Keyanna Moreau, the program is tailored to find out how each student learns the best, and then offers resources to increase reading skills. The program is a transitional one, created specifically for students to participate in until they are able to attend a class with their peers. It may take one year, or three, but CEA continues to work with every need until the student graduates. “The one thing I want parents to know is that a learning disability does not dictate a student’s success!” Keyanna said. “A child may take some time to blossom, but once they Continued on page 14

Exceptional Foundation Continued from page 9 caregivers of the fragile elderly. “Our participants have grown to love their visits to their friends at Calvin Cove,” says Renee. “The ability for them to give more than they receive is empowering; it allows them to not just feel, but to know they are making a difference and giving back to those who really need their special attention.” Beyond giving back are the participant-staffed fundraising efforts such as Joe on the Go, a mobile coffeehouse. Participants are SUPER excited about this new venture. “We are looking forward to local businesses and organizations scheduling events for us to come serve coffee & hot chocolate,” says Susan. “We can also serve baked goods.” Currently the participants will be selling muffins created at Special Kneads & Treats in Lawrenceville by exceptionally talented employees. Weaving the Exceptional Foundation of Atlanta throughout the fabric of the Greater Gwinnett Area came naturally for the three founding members. And now the program is all systems go with a wealth of knowledge, inspiration, and initiative from staff and participants alike. “The participants drive the program by their interests, and we guide the details,” says Susan. “It really does work out for all involved.” Like anything else, keeping costs at a minimum, providing staff, paying for supplies, gas, product, and all things involved in the running of any program takes vision and hard work. To be effective, the team is committed to keeping each group small enough to really get to know one another, yet offering several groups each week. “We believe that smaller groups provide the opportunity for deeper social connections with other program participants, as well as enhanced opportunities for engagement,” adds Renee. “Traveling within the community allows our participants to really become a part OF the community. And that is powerful – something we truly believe in.” More information at https://www.efatl.org/

Gwinnett Splashes Worldwide Color Continued from page 10 businesses. “When you fly over now, you see all these brightly colored homes, crime is down, businesses are attracting tourists. Paint makes such a difference.” Another of the great effects paint has on remote areas is with the schools. Emotion is heard in Rony’s voice as he tells of a school in Honduras that was so run down that parents had stopped sending their children. Once the school was painted, more improvements followed and the graduation rate began to go up. “Paint improves the conditions of the building and the way the community looks at it.” When Rony is asked about how Global Paint is able to take someone’s leftover paint from Gwinnett County in Georgia and do the most good with it all around the world, his response is hardly complicated. “I came to this country, I had an idea, I went to the people in the county who I thought might help me with that idea – and they did,” explains Rony. “I knew these people in waste management meant business, so I took this chance and worked so hard and we were able to do it. We were able to collect paint, recycle it, and package it for use where it is needed.” “Rony and Global Paint for Charity are definitely a bright light, both locally and abroad – changing the world one color at a time,” says Schelly. “I am truly blessed to call him a community partner and a friend.” Each year, Global Paint for Charity holds paint collection events. The next major collection event will take place in May at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to collect paint for recycling. Monetary donations are also needed to pay the shipping costs as well. When asked why it is less expensive to ship recycled paint instead of buying it overseas, Rony explains that it is very expensive in many of the places Global Paint for Charity serves. “Most people make less than a dollar a day,” says Rony. “Paint can cost anywhere from $30 a gallon or more. It is something they cannot afford, but does so much good. It lifts people up.” Each gallon makes a huge difference in Gwinnett and all around the world. So take a look in the basement or garage for your unused paint and help Rony and Global Paint for Charity splash some world-wide color. More information at www.globalpaints.org

Keeping the Smiles Coming By Kristen Eleveld Choosing a dentist isn’t always an easy decision. You need a qualified dentist who is conveniently located, and who places a priority on making patients feel at home. If this sounds like all the boxes on your dentist checklist, you can stop searching, because the perfect answer is waiting for you at Smiles by Simmons, where two of Gwinnett’s best dentists are ready to make your smile bright. Dr. John Simmons grew up in the Atlanta area, and has called Gwinnett home for over three decades. Shortly after graduating from dental school in the early 80s, Dr. Simmons joined the Navy and practiced as a dentist there. Three years later, he found himself in Snellville at the recommendation of a friend who thought a local dental group would be a good fit for Dr. Simmons’ expertise. Eventually, Dr. Simmons discovered that he had both a talent and a passion for cosmetic dentistry and opened his own practice to help his patients find their best smile. Now, Dr. Simmons is one of only nine dentists in Georgia to be accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. But for Dr. Simmons, the biggest accomplishment is giving patients a positive experience filled with excellent care. Continued on page 20

find the right process, they will fly.” Keyanna is passionate about helping students understand that they can learn anything; it’s only a matter of discovering how their brain works and what their process needs to be. She also encourages the kids she teaches to use the information they learn to continue to better themselves in all aspects of their lives – school, home, even future jobs can all be affected by understanding these key aspects of how they learn. “It takes a village, especially when it comes to helping a child learn,” said Keyanna. “We are not here to judge – we are only here to help.” It is this community-oriented philosophy that makes Choice Educational Academy a wonderful place for children with all types of abilities to not only learn, but to thrive. “We care about the kids here,” said Nancy. “When they have the right tools, they can all succeed.” More information at www.choiceeducationalacademy.com.

Starting a family and watching your kids grow up can be one of life’s biggest milestones. New parents look forward to discovering who and what their child will become and experiencing major events in their lives: prom, graduation, college, career, wedding…the list goes on. But what if you knew your child, not by choice, would not be able to participate in these time-honored milestones? Parents of children with special needs deal with the all too harsh reality that their child won’t be able to participate in the conventional way. They must prepare for a different lifestyle and expectations for their children. And while most parents traditionally plan for their children to grow up and be independent, successful adults, these parents must plan beyond the normal range of expectations. Depending on the severity of the child’s needs, parents must plan on how to support their child beyond their own lifetime. Enter DJ Jeyaram – a practitioner of healthcare corporate and regulatory law and Special Needs Estate Planning, Guardianship, and Medicaid Benefits areas. Growing up in southern New Jersey, Jeyaram received his degree from Boston University and went on to attend Emory University School of Law. He has been practicing healthcare law for the past twenty-two years and has specialized in the Special Needs concentration for the last decade. He is also currently a Magistrate Judge for Gwinnett County. While Jeyaram practiced healthcare law long before he and his lovely wife, Cassandra, began a family, it was the birth of their son, Kai, that truly cemented their need to help families of differently-abled children. Jeyaram explains, “My inspiration is my son Kai. Kai is ten years old and was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Williams Syndrome and a few years later with Autism.” It was then that Jeyaram saw his profession through the eyes of a parent instead of a barrister. “Many children with disabilities need Medicaid in order to receive medical and therapeutic services necessary to help them with their daily lives and overall health,” he says. “Thankfully my unique career path provided me with significant experience in the Medicaid Waiver programs even before my son was born. However, after Kai’s birth, I experienced the Waiver programs from a parent’s perspective and realized how complicated the appeals process is and how desperate families were for good legal help.” And it was that personal insight which led him to reach out to the community through free presentations. “We offer between six to ten free legal seminars a year to differently-abled families and nonprofits.” In these sessions, Jeyaram helps families learn what options are available to ensure the wellness and security of the differently-abled child and give families a peace of mind concerning their child’s future. And should families need Jeyaram’s assistance with the Medicaid benefits appeals “We serve these clients on a sliding scale because we know these kids desperately need this funding in order to have a quality life and receive the medical care and services they need.” Jeyaram explains, “The range of challenges faced by our clients is extremely broad. We will see clients who are very high functioning but may have some social challenges all the way to clients that are completely incapacitated, wheel-chair bound and non-verbal. We mostly work with the parents on behalf of their differently-abled child.” He further clarifies, “My clients have all sorts of diagnoses. Autism is very prevalent as is Down syndrome, Phelan McDermid syndrome, SATB2 Associated Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and various syndromes that are so rare that they have not been named yet.” With all of these considerations, the work Jeyaram does helps give families control over at least some aspects of their child’s wellbeing. For him, empowering those families is the best part of his service. He feels most satisfied “when I see a parent connect all the dots of a Special Needs Estate Plan and tell me ‘thank you for explaining that to us. Now I know what we have to do.’” But it goes even further. “It’s also knowing that I’ve helped a family put into place a plan for their child that will ensure their well-being even after the parents have passed. As a parent of a special needs child, I worry just like they do about what will happen when I’m gone. So when we put into place a Special Needs Estate Plan, I love knowing that their child will be cared for in the best way possible.” Our Town Gwinnett would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. and Dr. Jeyaram and to their son, Kai, and their daughter, Emmy Rose, for the work they do for our community and the services they provide for our families. Exchange Student Stories: The Road from Lilburn to Grayson By Harper Randolph, Parkview High Junior

His arrival for the spring semester did create some challenges. Schools in Gwinnett County only accept five exchange students per year, and Parkview was all filled up. They only had openings in Grayson. My father works in the Grayson cluster, so he could get Iker to school every day. Naturally, sending him so far from Lilburn wasn’t our first choice. As a family, we wanted him to attend Parkview. It would be easier for us to get to and from school, and I would have been able to drive him around. We had to follow Gwinnett rules, so, sadly, Parkview was not an option. This meant my new brother would attend Grayson and I would be at Parkview. Our job now as a family is to make sure Iker has a good year. We plan to help him be successful at school and make new friends outside of our family. His English is great so that isn’t a problem. We hope this is a year Iker will remember and look back on with smiles and laughter when he’s back in Spain waiting for a visit from his American sister.

Last summer, my family had our first experience as foreign exchange hosts. The experience began when Lilly, a girl from Germany, came to stay with us. She was a junior while I was a sophomore, and it was the first time there was someone else my age in our home. As an only child, having a sibling took some getting used to, but it was by far one of the best experiences of my life. We explored a bit of the US when we went to Texas to visit family, we attended a big American wedding in the Georgia mountains, and we loved our visit to Sapelo Island. We also lived through some serious TV drama and cooked quite a few random recipes, though we do not recommend trying Japanese cheesecake. Hosting Lilly didn’t just give me a new experience for my college applications, but I gained a sister and a best friend over the course of the year. From our first hug to our final goodbye, I knew that hosting was something that I had to do again. As a family, we planned on signing up for another student when I was a senior. However, our plan changed when we got a call asking to help a student from Spain. We ended up inviting this new stuPre-emergents to help dent into our home only six prevent crabgrass. ART Station in Stone Mountain Continued from page 5 learning, but the result is a kid who now grasps important creative concepts. “We are not about turning these kids into professional artists or actors,” said David. “We are really more about treating the whole citizen. Schools take care of left side brain development, and sports, but do always not address the creative side.” The creative side is certainly evident in the dozens of different artistic works you will find inside the ART Station. In fact, you can see them for yourself. The ART Station has dozens of theatre productions every year, and changes out the art in their gallery just as regularly. You will even find creativity in the gift shop, which showcases items that are specific to the artistic process. If you’re not sure where to go, it’s easy to find – just look for the old Trolley Station in Historic Stone Mountain Village. You Deserve the Best! One on One: Meet GGC President Dr. Jann Joseph By Beth Volpert Johansen The first time I met Dr. Jann Joseph, the newly named president of Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), I completely missed her name and title in the introductions. Since we were in a group, surrounded by the twinkling community-created Christmas trees located in the Aurora Theater lobby, I just smiled, shook her hand, and then tuned my ears to the conversation. The saying, “First impressions are lasting” was an understatement as I continued to listen, and by the time I had used my investigative journalism powers to determine her name and title, I was a fan. Born in Trinidad, West Indies, Dr. Joseph is the youngest of five siblings. Her parents, Sybil and Fred Pantor, raised their children with a strong insistence on the value of education as a means to transform lives. At home, Sybil provided lessons and reading material, and Fred worked as a tailor. Both parents gave Dr. Joseph a rock-solid foundation that would serve her well as she worked her way towards a higher education and a higher calling. “In our home, just outside my bedroom was a sign that my mother had framed,” recalls Dr. Joseph. “It read: Perseverance is the key to success. That was the first phrase I learned to read from my mother.” Statements like that were indeed key to Dr. Joseph’s success in life. Along with her mother’s love of words came lessons from her father on how to stay in touch with her creative side. “I grew up in a place where you made stuff,” says Dr. Joseph. “I could measure you, draft my own pattern, and make you a dress.” As a young wife and mother of three boys, Dr. Joseph continued her educational studies and taught classes. In between she continued to stay in touch with her creative side by making all of her husband’s slacks. “I had made all my own dresses growing up, and as I grew older, I taught myself to knit, crochet, and how to use power tools!” Balanced by family, creativity, and her own higher education, Dr. Joseph found herself teaching and researching in the biological sciences. She began her first full-time faculty appointment at Grand Valley State University in Michigan where she rose to serve as associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Most recently, she served as executive vice chancellor at Indiana University at South Bend. It was there that she began to serve on a variety of boards for several professional and civic organizations. In doing so, Dr. Joseph realized yet another love for service beyond the campus – love of community involvement and of setting a good civic example to students that had placed her in the lobby of the Aurora Theater the night we met. That night, Dr. Joseph met many new people; mostly those who serve the county through Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful. She had just recently joined the board and was obviously enjoying her time getting to know the other members. Her smile captivated both her small audience as well as others in the lobby waiting for shows to begin. It was no accident that the trees decorating the scene represented the many service related opportunities available in Gwinnett. “Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful is the first board I joined,” says Dr. Joseph. “My predecessors had both served, and there was a space on the board for me. I was happy to say yes! My late husband, Dr. Edwin Joseph, was a professor of sustainability. My son also has a degree in sustainability. This allows me to honor their work.” Welcoming Dr. Joseph to the Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful board was a natural for Executive Director Shelley Marlatt. “We are honored and excited about Dr. Joseph joining Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful’s Advisory Board,” says Shelley. “With her passion of paying it forward, she is a perfect addition and will bring so much knowledge and experience to our organization. The partnership and relationship we have with GGC is truly a special one, and Continued on page 22

Community Member Spotlight: Meet Abby McCulloch By Amy Ney During an average week for any high school junior, schedules include physics exams, calculus packets, and figuring out weekend plans. However, for Parkview High School junior Abby McCulloh, her weeks also consist of preparing for the 2020 US Olympic Swim Trials. After classes, McCulloh drives to swim practice at Swim Atlanta for two hours. She may have a lifting session from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. or go for another swim. Then it is time for completing homework and hopefully squeezing in some downtime. Saturdays require two swim sessions. “Occasionally my coach, Chris Davis, likes to throw in a Sunday workout too,” McCulloh says with a laugh, “but most of the time we have Sundays off.” And what does a nationally ranked swimmer watch, especially in an Olympic year? McCulloh, a self-professed swim nerd, says, “I watch swimming a lot of times. But more often than not, my guilty pleasure is The Office. I also love to watch The Bachelor with my mom.” When she’s not at school or swimming, McCulloh enjoys spending time with teammates, who also double as best friends. “Chick-fil-a is my go-to spot, but we will hang out anywhere,” jokes McCulloh. With so much time dedicated to swimming, McCulloh says the swim experience has been very beneficial. She likes to talk about all of the lessons she has learned through intense training. These lessons apply to all areas of her life, including her relentless work ethic and the highest expectations she has for herself. “But the most important lesson is the value of a team and the relationships you make through a sport,” explains McCulloh. “Whether you have a good or bad race, people aren’t going to remember that. What they remember is how you treated them, and that sticks with me. I know that the friendships that swimming has given me will last a lifetime, which is incredible.” As a sophomore, McCulloh was Gwinnett’s Co-Swimmer of the Year, after winning high school state championships in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle as well as Gwinnett County titles. This year, she successfully defended her county titles in the 200-yard and 500-yard-freestyle. Additionally, she broke the county-meet record in the 200-yard-free and her all-time county and county meet records in the 500-yard-freestyle from 2019. She won

the 500-yard and 1650-yard-style at Junior Nationals in December. And this year at Georgia High School State Competition, she anchored Parkview’s 4x100 relay. The team of Abby McCulloh, Sarah Livingston, Maggie Nguyen, and Sydney Walker won first place, setting a new school record. “Abby is one of the best high school distance swimmers in the country,” says Eric Brown, Parkview High School’s swim coach. “She has an incredible internal drive and work ethic. I also love how she cheers on her teammates. After Abby broke team and county meet records, she was standing at the side of the pool cheering on her friends.” In November, McCulloh committed to swim for the Auburn Tigers in the fall of 2021. “I chose Auburn because it is a good balance of academics and athletics for me. I feel like Auburn allows me to gain a quality education while also growing as an athlete and achieving my goals. I love the team culture, the coaching staff, and the beautiful campus,” said McCulloh. Her dad, Andrew, is also an Auburn alumnus. McCulloh has not yet committed to a major. “I will likely end up studying something in the field of science, but I’m still exploring my interests and don’t have a specific major in mind.” Continued on page 22

Burgers and Brews Week – Who Will Be the Burger Champ?

Keeping the Smiles Coming Continued from page 13 “It’s my goal to treat my patients the way I would want someone to treat me,” said Dr. Simmons, whose faith plays a large role in the way he treats his patients. One of the most notable things about this practice is that patients don’t just come and go – the Smiles by Simmons team has served many of their patients for decades, and is able to create and maintain a relationship with each patient that goes far beyond dental care. In fact, it was this high level of quality patient relationships that inspired one of Dr. Simmons’ young patients to go into the dental practice himself. Dr. Robert French, who began seeing Dr. Simmons as a child, recently graduated from dental school, and has since joined Dr. Simmons as a partner in the Smiles by Simmons office. “Everyone has been so welcoming,” said Dr. French of his experience at the practice so far. “I look forward to getting to know every patient the same way Dr. Simmons does.” Dr. French, who hails from Gwinnett, has quickly become known for his gentle approach to new patients, and his sense of humor that puts everyone at ease. Dr. Simmons noted that his partner picks up new techniques quickly, and is “ahead of the game” when it comes to both his skill and knowledge level. Both dentists credit a wonderful staff as a huge factor in their success. Dr. French also noted that they take special care to give each patient the time they need to have all their questions answered and feel comfortable with their plan of care. “No one is rushed or made to feel like we are in a hurry,” said Dr. French. “We want to be very thorough and give everyone the attention they need.” When Drs. Simmons and French aren’t helping people in their office, they are helping people both inside and outside of their community. They each participate in a missionoriented service project that allows them to provide dental care to people in other countries who would otherwise not have access to that type of treatment. Dr. Simmons also spends time serving his community through his church. The Smiles by Simmons team practices what they preach – each morning, the staff gathers to pray for their patients and go through a biblical devotional together. “This is like a ministry for me,” said Dr. Simmons. “We want to serve people the best we can.” More information at www.smilesbysimmons.com.

By Traci Sanders Burger lovers, mark your calendars! Explore Gwinnett is hosting their fourth annual Burgers and Brews Week between March 15 and March 21. They are passionate about sharing local cuisine with visitors and Gwinnettians by offering specialty, one-of-a-kind burgers for a limited time. Their mission is to encourage people to try a new restaurant and hopefully become a repeat customer. Another cool addition to the event this year is something called Burgers and Brews Battle, where visitors can try all the burgers at once and decide on their favorite. Only one will be named the best burger in Gwinnett. This will take place on March 21st from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The following restaurants will participate in Burgers and Brews Week and the Battle: Public House, ArtBar (Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta), The Crossing Steakhouse, La Belle Vie, Local Republic, McCray’s Tavern on the Square, Parkside District, Parma Tavern, Ten Bistro, and Uncle Jack’s Meat House. Farm Burger, Peachtree Corners, and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill will only be participating in the Burgers and Brews Week. Entry is free for the restaurants and Explore Gwinnett provides all of the marketing as well as the materials (aside from ingredients) for the Battle event. They are partnering with Laundry Events and City of Lawrenceville for the Burger Battle as well. The specialty a la carte burgers that are served during the Burgers and Brews will be $7 each. These are not your everyday burgers. For example, Uncle Jack’s Meat House will be serving the Vito Corleone – William Jack Degel’s signature prime beef blend of pork and veal featuring Pecorino Romano and Grande Mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, San Marzano Continued on page 22

JBF Business Media’s Atlanta Small Business Network By Beth Volpert Johansen Entrepreneurship and support of the small business is the heart and soul of JBF Business Media’s Atlanta Small Business Network. And at the center of JBF is the dynamic and forward-thinking pair, Jim and Bridget Fitzpatrick, who have taken the idea of entrepreneurship and nurtured it for the benefit of other entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout the Atlanta Metro Area. Headquartered in Gwinnett’s thriving Technology Park in Peachtree Corners, JBF fits right in alongside the ingenuity and creativity sparked by their professional and civic neighbors. Providing a platform for all things small business is central to JBF Business Media’s offerings. “Bridget and I thought to create this platform together for small businesses,” says Jim. “We have developed a rich content resource for entrepreneurs and owners like us, and have enjoyed a warm reception here in the small business community.” The platform supports those with fledgling ideas all the way through to experts in various areas of business. With their own television program, The Atlanta Small Business Show, airing on CBS Channel 46 and Peachtree TV, the company is able to showcase their content for the benefit of anyone willing to watch and learn. Jim and Bridget liken the Atlanta Small Business Network to a toolbox for building a successful business. Constantly expanding their panel of business experts, JBF covers topics such as: Branding, Training Tips, Marketing, Sales, Co-working, and Leadership. The list of topics is ever expanding in response to current trends. Each week, JBF conducts numerous interviews, shoots videos, and creates podcasts of varying lengths. Every piece of media is stretched to the fullest possible use and offered on a variety of platforms to ensure all information is user-friendly. “Some people like to read articles, others prefer watching video,” says Jim. “We also offer podcasts for those who are traveling or just prefer that medium.” Clients who seek JBF Business Media’s guidance find Jim and Bridget’s advice to be sound and sage. “Sometimes new small business owners or those with an entrepreneurial spirit can find that starting up is not only financially difficult, but also a little bit of a personally overwhelming experience,” says Bridget. “We ask questions from the perspective of being business owners ourselves, and try to walk them through the challenges facing businesses today.” A tour of the studio reveals an energetic corporate culture. Editing suites are staffed with creative employees who output several videos and shows daily. The high-tech set is designed to be customized for different clients who wish to shoot on site, as well as serving the weekend television shows. “We are the CNBC for small businesses here in Atlanta,” says Jim. “The website hosts our episodes and speaks to specific and relevant small business topics that extend beyond our local area.” Providing relevant and savvy small business content suitable for expansion into other markets is part of a larger plan for JBF Business Media. The lessons to be learned from experts in all areas of business translate to other markets similar to the Atlanta Metro. “We use a vetting process here to make certain those we interview have expertise in their specific topics,” says Jim. “Bestselling authors, speakers, trainers, and business owners offer a wealth of useful information that becomes part of our daily content offerings.” Taking a virtual tour of the Atlanta Small Business Network’s website is all-at-once Continued on page 22

exciting. It makes you want to have a great idea just to plug into all the rich content contained in the cyber treasure trove of business guidance. Covering everything from Simple Strategies to Hard Truths and all that falls in between is not an easy task, but the constantly fluid listings of show topics, interviews, book reviews, start-up advice, etc., are handled with all the panache of a New York studio. “Small business owners need help, and there is a plethora of information they may need right on the website,” says Jim. “It is a great place to get a strong start.” And, as they grow, the team has plans to offer event-oriented training. “Imagine offering the small business owner the same access to training that corporate America can access,” says Jim. “The digital environment has changed everything for the mom and pop stores as well as the Amazons and Walmarts of the business landscape.” Combining the many aspects of the Atlanta Small Business Network into a one-stopshop for the entrepreneur or small business owner has been rewarding for Jim and Bridget. Seeking expertise, disseminating that information into digestible portions on a variety of platters, and providing a banquet of exceptionally relevant resources to the Atlanta Small Business Community has created a successful small business in and of itself for JBF Business Media. Even the company name is exceptionally descriptive of what is possible for the small business owner in terms of connecting with customers and clients. Media is the basis of communication in this highly technical era of business and provides the platform for succeeding as a small business in a global market. More information at www.myasbn.com.

Meet Abby McCulloch Continued from page 19 McCulloh is no doubt a hard worker, but, more than that, she is generous and humble. “I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my friends and my family who all have helped me get to where I am today,” she said. “Without the support from everyone in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am, and I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have such as this one. I am so extremely grateful.” More information at www.usaswimming.org

Meet GGC President Dr. Jann Joseph Continued from page 17 I am grateful that together, we are carrying on the legacy of having the president involved in our mission and vision of connecting people and resources for a sustainable Gwinnett.” Additionally, Dr. Joseph has committed to supporting the local charity, Rainbow Village. “It is easy for women with children to find themselves alone at one time or another due to so many circumstances,” says Dr. Joseph. “There for the love of God go I – and I want to recognize them, mentor them, help them with the things that challenge them. My parents did not have a formal education, but they had a passion for education. It is the great equalizer. My parents placed no limitations on their expectations for me.” Dr. Joseph sees her desire to serve the community as president of Georgia Gwinnett College on local civic boards as a tool for teaching the students on campus. “College is both a privilege and a responsibility for students,” says Dr. Joseph. “Their access to school is providing them the opportunity to learn from mentors and develop good leadership. I have to set a good example.” Fitting into the campus in order to visibly set that good example seems to be something that comes with ease to Dr. Jann Joseph. “I imagine in my head, all these people who invested in me, and I am determined not to squander that investment,” says Dr. Joseph. “I have an unwavering and unrelenting desire to help our students succeed.”
