On the Cover: Getting to Know Russell Orthodontics By Our Town Staff “Nothing you wear is more important than your smile.” – Connie Stevens For more than a decade, Dr. Ross Russell and his team at Russell Orthodontics have been “going the extra smile” for their Grayson patients. Raised in south Georgia, Dr. Russell completed his undergraduate studies at Auburn University, with plans to attend medical school, when he had an abrupt change of heart. After a day spent with a school-friend‘s father, who was an endodontist (root canal specialist), he saw firsthand what a satisfying and rewarding career Dentistry could be. And, as they say, the rest is history. Dr. Russell went on to earn his Doctor of Medical Dentistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completing a three-year Orthodontic residency at the University of Kentucky. After returning to Georgia, Dr. Russell opened his first office in Grayson in 2005, followed by his Athens location two years later. He currently has a staff of ten team members, with patients finding the same friendly faces working together at both locations. Perhaps best of all, Dr. Russell is the sole orthodontist, which is becoming less common in the industry. He remains committed to high-level accessibility to his patients and parents, in stark contrast to a popular reputation of orthodontic patients being “herded through like cattle.” The entire team is dedicated to delivering top-quality, personalized care, and they pride themselves on developing a genuine relationship with each patient. All new patients are given a complementary consultation, where a focus on honest and transparent communication identifies the needs of everyone. Dr. Russell works hard to ensure that his patients are well informed, and

Our Town

that they fully understand the benefits of the various treatment methods available. Once the course of treatment is determined, he and his team will provide the highest standard of care given the option that the patient has chosen. In his many years of practice, Dr. Russell has found that lower quality treatments fall short of excellence, are harder to maintain, and often end up costing the patient more money in the long run. His goal has always been to produce “results that last a lifetime,” and he is a firm believer that once treatment is complete, his patients should not need to invest any more money on orthodontic services. The specialty of orthodontics is an ever-evolving industry. Cutting-edge clear aligner treatments, including Invisalign therapy, are all the rage. Recently on the scene are DIY treatments for everything from tooth whitening to straightening. Some practitioners feel quite challenged by these trends, but Dr. Russell is certainly up to the task of informing patients what they should expect and deserve from orthodontic services. With many years and hundreds of often quite difficult cases under his belt, Dr. Russell has become very confident in delivering extraordinary results with Invisalign. His state-of-the-art office features the latest in high-tech tools to take your orthodontic care to the next level. 3-D imaging and “impression-less” digital scanning are just two ways that Russell Orthodontics can offer even more comfortable and efficient methods of treatment. Dr. Russell‘s passion is the art and science of orthodontics. While he likes to say that “you wear your smile every day,” the truth is that orthodontics is much more than just having straight teeth. Jaw and joint health, along with an understanding of how teeth fit, function, and wear over time, are equally important. As Dr. Russell puts it, “Creating a beautiful smile that will stand

the test of time takes a real commitment to the quality aspects of orthodontics, and that is exactly what my team is motivated to provide.” It’s an exciting time to be part of Russell Orthodontics! The Grayson office recently moved to a larger, newly renovated space in the same complex along Loganville Highway. Along with the advanced-technology equipment, the new office has been designed with their guests’ comfort in mind. The lobby features iPad stations, ergonomic furniture, and electronic device charging stations, with ample natural wood, glass, and natural light Continued on page 16

Thinking about recapturing the charm of your home?

One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers

Call us today for your free estimate!

@RyanSauers

Nearly everything we read, listen to, and watch in 2018 is tied to media sensationalism. And it is often negative in nature. We hear of political scandals, crimes, health epidemics, and other tensions. Media is determined to “shock us” into paying attention. Why do we seldom hear about a neighbor helping a stranger change their tire on the side of the road, or volunteers raising money for cancer research? Why don’t we see more profiles on local first responders who risk their lives for us each day? I will tell you why. It is not considered to be the “sexy sensationalistic news headline” that grabs a person’s attention. But, here is the problem with that line of thinking in 2018. People are sick and tired of all negative (doom and gloom news) all the time. So, from my vantage point we have two choices. We can either come together and UNITE, or pull away from one another and UNTIE. The words are almost the same except for two letters moving between them. UNITED (common ground) is what this community is about. In contrast, we are bombarded with messages (things falling apart, and people divided) that we are UNTIED. The people I know and meet (locally and from many countries) simply want a better life for themselves and their families. This is what I want. You too, right? This is where Our Town comes in. We deliver original local content that you do not get anywhere else. You get this information/these stories in print, online, and in digital mediums. Your news, your town, your way! The people I meet enjoy being part of this community and have (directly or indirectly) amazing stories of things they want to share. We never focus (and never will) on the negative stories that serve no purpose other than to scare, shock, and divide. Does this mean our community is perfect? Of course not. However, in all my travels I can find few places that have a greater sense of community than we do right here. I am thankful for this community and our (3F) focus of…faith, families, and friendships. We may have our differences, but we look out for one another. Always! You see, we simply have way more in common than what we do not. And, friends, this is not FAKE NEWS... it is the truth. Nothing more and nothing less. Where we work, live, and play is special. I wish each of you an amazing month of May. And, thank you for continuing with us and being actively engaged in the story of my town, your town, OUR TOWN.

Making a Difference in the Archer Cluster: Meet Clent & Jennifer Chatham By J. Rice Husband and wife principals Clent and Jennifer Chatham are lifelong Gwinnett residents who met as first year assistant principals for the district in 2004, and have been married four years. Both are leaving an indelible mark on the Archer School Cluster. “Archer has been my home since the 2008-2009 school year, and it is a community I love dearly,” says Jennifer Chatham, principal of Harbins Elementary School. Husband Clent Chatham, principal of McConnell Middle School (MMS), echoes the sentiment. “There’s no place we’d rather be. We live, work, and send our kids to school all within the Archer Cluster. Our commitment is to the community.” Clent has been with MMS since it first opened in 1996 – first as a teacher, then assistant principal, and now principal. It can be a high-stress job, but Clent takes it in stride. “People have to find their own way to cope with it,” he explains. “There are a lot of components to this job; most publicly are test scores, and, now with recent events, school safety. Test scores are important, but it’s even MORE important to show we care about our students and their safety.” Clent is focused on developing leaders and great teachers. He is grateful to his own mentors he’s had along the way. “I’ve had some great role models,” he explains. “Mike Moody at Snellville Middle; John Campbell, Dan Hicks, and Paula Everett Truppi at McConnell; and Dana Pugh at Grayson High. I learned a lot from each of them about leadership style and how to treat people.” MMS is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) school, which means they look for creative ways to encourage and reinforce students’ good behavior. Clent has initiated some PBIS ideas of his own, generating overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents, students, and teachers alike. Clent asks his teachers to send home one positive postcard to a student per week – which Clent pays for himself. “The feedback has been tremendous,” Clent states. “I get emails from parents about it, and some even send pictures of their postcard displayed on their fridge. They tell us it’s the first time they’ve had a positive message from a teacher. Usually when they get a note from a teacher it is about a problem.” Clent also assigns teachers a day to recommend one of their students for the Student of the Day program. Once a month, those students who have been nominated, along with their families, are invited to have Breakfast with the Principal. It gives Clent the opportunity to personally recognize the students and their parents over a breakfast of Chick-Fil-A biscuits. A drawing determines which two of these students will have their names displayed publicly on the school marquee as Tigers of the Month. Jennifer is in her third year at the helm of Harbins Elementary, and states that her goals are to “continue to grow problem solvers, critical thinkers, and communicators who give back to our Archer community through service.” Education and unity are two of the themes she emphasizes. “We believe in creating real-world problems for students to solve that integrate the curriculum in order to serve our community.” Jennifer states, “Our cluster schools are working hard to collaborate so that our students are ready for college and career. Across our three schools we are building unity and truly providing the experiences that will allow our students to come together now and as they enter middle school. We are uniting our resources and our talents to best meet the needs of our kids. There is a spirit of collegiality that is certainly inspirational and is right for ALL the children we serve in the Archer Cluster. I could not be prouder of the work our cluster is doing.” Jennifer invites parents to be involved as much as possible. “We work hard to invite parents in to collaborate with us and to support our children,” she explains. “Our parents are a vast resource, and we want them to be a part of our work. We welcome their time and their expertise in supporting teaching and learning. Come in. Volunteer!” Like Clent, Jennifer emphasizes how important the community is to them. “This is where I wanted to raise my own children,” she explains. “I taught at Dacula High School for eight years beginning in 1997. The families I served there are the same families I serve at Harbins. Some of the students at Harbins are the children of the students I taught. I am fortunate to work in a cluster I have loved for so long.” She adds, “It’s the best job in the best cluster. Clent and I are dedicated to this community because we are a part of it as educators and parents. We are invested in these children’s lives and we want to ensure the best possible educational experience for all our students. We love being part of the cluster, and we are committed to its success. It is home.” More information on McConnell Middle School at 770-554-1000. More information on Harbins Elementary at harbins.org.

Learning Lessons: Planting the Roots for Lifelong Healthy Habits By Tanisha Turner There’s no shortage of challenges that accompany parenthood. Among them is instilling healthy habits in your little ones. With children today spending less time outdoors and more time in front of screens, and as childhood obesity rates grow, nurturing healthy behavior early on is more important than ever before. One simple way to get young children engaged in making healthy choices that can be done in your own backyard is planting a garden. Gardening can help establish healthy habits that will benefit children throughout their lives. Digging, weeding, and watering require physical exertion, which increases strength, endurance, and coordination. Children who are routinely active at a young age are more likely to grow into active adults. Growing vegetables or produce with children can also help them develop positive attitudes toward, and preferences for, nutritious foods. They are more likely to accept a new food if it’s offered 10-15 times, and they will be more willing to try a new vegetable or fruit if they helped to grow and to prepare it. Beyond fostering traditional healthy habits, gardening can also help children practice important traits and skills like patience, teamwork, responsibility, and planning. And, gardening naturally lends itself to valuable science and ecology lessons. Children can directly observe the impact water, sunshine, and food have on the survival of plants. Plus, the investigatory skills they practice help build critical thinking skills. To make the most of your family’s gardening adventure, Primrose offers the following tips: • Choose plants together. Take your child to your local garden center or co-op to select plants. To increase the probability that your child will have a positive gardening experience, recommend low-maintenance plants with high success rates for your part of the country, but let her choose a few on her own. • Give ownership. Set aside an area specifically for your child to garden. If he wants to drop an entire packet of seeds in one hole, encourage him to experiment and see what happens. • Use small tools. Many manufacturers offer smaller, child-sized gardening tools like trowels, gloves, rakes, and hoes. Smaller tools are safer and easier for children to handle, and having their own tools will make them feel more responsible for their contributions to the garden. • Show genuine interest. Demonstrate to your child how much you enjoy gardening by tending to the plants daily and vocalizing how you look forward to it each day. The difference between gardening and yard work is fun, and children can tell the difference. • Ask questions along the way. Children’s natural curiosity is bound to emerge during your gardening. You can help them learn by asking questions, prompting them to observe changes that occur or differences between plants, and offering information as you go. Continued on page 15

One on One with Ronda Colvin-Leary By Patty Gabilondo If Ronda Colvin-Leary has time for a nostalgic moment, she enjoys reminiscing about growing up in rural Alabama where her grandparents raised their own food in addition to taking care of the horses, cows, and chickens, and where her family laid the foundation of her core values and beliefs in helping others and giving back. “Family is the foundation of a strong community,” says ColvinLeary. As the oldest of four siblings, she also fondly remembers making mud pies with her friends, gathering fresh eggs for breakfast, and, yes, even occasionally drinking out of a water hose during the heat of the summer. When she is not fighting to protect her client’s rights in the courtroom or traveling to secure a deposition from a witness, Colvin-Leary can usually be found serving the public in a more hands on way, such as feeding homeless veterans at the Veterans Empowerment Organization, or volunteering at the Diamond in the Rough youth development program that is dedicated to building self-esteem, mentoring, and leadership training to girls ages 4-18 years. She is proud to often be accompanied to these community service events by her two daughters Kerrigan (16) and Kyla (14), who, like their mom, have extremely busy schedules. When asked who had the greatest influence on her life, she responds without hesitation, “My Dad – and I miss him every day!” Her father, a Vietnam veteran who passed away in 2013, suffered from PTSD. Colvin-Leary learned first-hand how mental illness can affect the entire family. Then, as a former probation officer before graduating from Florida Coastal School of Law, she experienced how one positive person can make a huge difference in someone’s life and that good people can make bad decisions. Colvin-Leary is also proud to serve on the board of Step by Step Recovery, Inc., whose mission is to assist recovering addicts and to help homeless individuals achieve self-sufficiency. “I love working with people who are passionate about making a positive difference,” she says Colvin-Leary. She expresses her concern about Gwinnett County’s homeless population, many of whom are veterans who suffer from some form of mental illness and have experienced a complex set of factors, leaving them in a state of Invisibility. “I wish people would care more, be more compassionate, and treat everyone with dignity,” she says, “because you never know what tomorrow might bring.” In her spare time, she also remains active with the Rotary Club of Emory-Druid Hills and the Lions Club of Lawrenceville. “I hate to leave a task undone,” Colvin-Leary says, but she will admit that she does look forward

to occasional moments with a big bowl of popcorn and an old black and white western movie to calm things down after a hectic day. Ronda Colvin-Leary, the managing attorney for her law firm, currently resides in Snellville with her husband and two daughters. More information at https://www.learylawoffices.com/

The Natural and Cultural Resources Management Section of Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation was created in September of 2017. Its mission is to serve as an innovative and ecological steward of Gwinnett County’s natural resources that include native flora and fauna within conservation parks and historic sites managed by Gwinnett County. It offers interdisciplinary programs, provides research, and collaborates with local stakeholders and community partners. This division encompasses many of the County’s historic sites such as the Gwinnett County Courthouse, the Lawrenceville Female Seminary, and the Isaac Adair House (one of the oldest homes in Gwinnett County). Many activities are held at these facilities, and oftentimes staff members partner with Gwinnett County residents and other professional organizations to offer programs that illustrate a rich history and cultural diversity. Established on December 15, 1818, Gwinnett County is in the middle of celebrating its Bicentennial Year. Friends, family, and residents can enjoy art and history exhibits, bus tours, interpretive programs, and other special events being held throughout the year. On March 24th, the newly renovated Isaac Adair House featured its annual Let Freedom Ring Festival, which celebrates the patriotic spirit of the American Revolution. Guests engaged in numerous games and activities, and had the opportunity to experience some of the county’s history through an extensive display of artifacts. “Another one of our goals is to inspire a deeper understanding of these natural and cultural resources,” said Sarah Barlow, Section Manager for the division. “Our staff continues to deliver this message through the various programs that it offers throughout Gwinnett County.” In honor of Arbor Day, the staff has developed a program that offers citizens an opportunity to discover native trees and to understand their role in the community. The event will take place at Little Mulberry Park, Best Friend Park, Bethesda Park, and McDaniel Farm Park. “This program showcases our collaboration with the University of Georgia’s Extension Service,” Barlow said. “Through this venture, we plan to educate participants and share information that they can use, even after the program has ended. At the end of the program, each individual receives a tree sampling to take home and plant in their yard.” An inclusive division, this entity of Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation strives to partner with the local community, and the children of Gwinnett County are always a priority. Offering opportunities that are “child-friendly,” the section provides field trips, site tours, and other programs that marry science with history. One great example of this inclusiveness is McDaniel Farm Park where the gardens, corn fields, and cotton fields are a significant feature. Here staff members work with local Master Gardeners and operate the area as a living farm that produces seasonal vegetables and herbs. Think your doctor should listen to more than just your heart?

Memories in Monroe Classic Car Show By Maple Johnson For twelve years, the city of Monroe has hosted one of the largest and most popular events around town, and this year’s show is no different. The 13th annual Memories in Monroe Classic Car Show was held in downtown Monroe in March. Spectators at this family-friendly event cruised the grounds to observe classic vehicles, while others traveled down memory lane listening to classic oldies. The display featured vintage cars and trucks dating as far back as the 1950’s and even older. Almost 200 entries were taken, and over 2,000 people were in attendance. Contestants were excited about the event and spectators came from as far away as the Carolinas. “I think one of the reasons people participate in our show is that our awards are not always traditional,” said Leigh Ann Walker, one of the show’s organizers. “We don’t always give out trophies or plaques. Over the years, we’ve had great success. One show participant drove from Atlanta to display his car. I even spoke to a gentleman who’s been to every show we’ve had.” In many auto shows, winners are given traditional awards such as trophies and plaques, but this team handed out awards that were non-traditional and as unique as the autos they represented. One winner received a clock displaying a real-life street name. Over twenty prizes were handed out, and various categories were represented, including Best Survivor, Best of Show in Foreign Autos, and Best of Show in American Classics. Additional parking was provided by local businesses, and the judges were selected from various auto clubs in the surrounding area. Another distinctive factor Continued on page 17

Watching your community develop and thrive is always exciting. But have you ever stopped and wondered what it takes to grow a community into its full potential? For the city of Grayson, it comes down to a few key items and key people – people like Amanda Leftwich, who recently took on the role of Community Development Director for Grayson. Leftwich is tasked with overseeing, coordinating, and promoting activities that foster a strong and active community – a job that is both fulfilling and demanding. In short, it’s her job to find ways to grow Grayson to its fullest potential. As a Gwinnett native, she knows all too well the importance of making sure a city has not only the resources it needs, but the opportunities to reach out to those living within its borders. “I viewed this role as a way for me to give back to the community that has provided my family and me with so many fun and positive memories,” said Leftwich, who raised both of her sons in the Grayson community. “It was a great way to get involved with a place I love.” Leftwich gave a few hints on what’s in store for Grayson moving forward. One big project, nicknamed The Railyard, is focused on creating an environment where community members and families can walk together, ride their bikes, and gather in a communal space. They will also have the opportunity to support their community in the small, locally-owned shops and restaurants. The Railyard is paving the way for neighbors and families to spend time together enjoying their community, along with the chance to learn some of their city’s history at the same time. To learn more about The Railyard, head to railyardgrayson.com. And more is on the horizon – Grayson will also soon be home to an Ampavillion, giving the community even more opportunities to gather and share quality time with their neighbors. In addition to bringing in revenue for the city, Leftwich emphasized that the true benefit of these projects is the sense of pride and value they instill in their community. It’s the best of both worlds – a city that maintains its small-town charm while seeking out the best developments and advances for the people who help it thrive. “Grayson is only getting better!” said Leftwich, who feels her own family has benefited greatly from being a part of this community. “We have been able to develop as a town and maintain strong and life-long friendships, and still feel the sense of a tight knit community.” With Leftwich at the helm of community development, the city of Grayson is destined to reach its highest potential and give its members even more of the friendships and sense of community that have made it so special for years. Amanda Leftwich is the Community Development Director for the city of Grayson. More information at www.cityofgrayson.org.

Getting to Know: Kids & Main Playcare in Lawrenceville By J. Rice When Ursula Britt and her husband moved from Washington, D.C. to Snellville six years ago, they immediately encountered a problem. New to the area and having no family here in Georgia, they searched in vain for after-hours child care for their young son. “We used traditional daycare while we worked, but had no options for short-term childcare at night and on the weekends,” Britt says. “The final straw was having to drop our son off in South Carolina with my sister so we could attend a four-hour holiday party here in Atlanta. After that experience, we decided we would quit complaining there was no solution and CREATE the solution.” Before undertaking such a monumental endeavor, they decided to test their idea online. “We launched a Facebook ad that said: ‘Coming Soon – Drop In Child Care,’” Britt explains. “Based on the reaction to that ad, we knew other parents were experiencing our same frustrations, and Kids & Main Playcare was born.” Britt continues, “Our signature service is drop-in child care. Parents pay an hourly rate for this service, so they’re only paying for child care when they need it. We also offer day camps when schools are closed, as well as private parties with exclusive use of our Play Center. We just opened registration for Mother’s Morning Out, which is a one or two day a week structured learning program from 9 am to 1 pm for kids ages 1-4. We also offer special events on Sundays where parents can come in and participate in activities with their children.” Two of those recent family time events included an art class and a slime workshop, which Britt reports were a hit with parents and kids alike. Kids & Main Playcare hires Child Care Specialists who are CPR/First Aid trained and who have passed the State background checks, drug screenings, and State mandated child care training. Britt takes great satisfaction in providing the kind of off-hours child care that was not available to her family. They even provide late night care on Friday and Saturday, staying open until midnight. “Parents are rediscovering date night!” The idea of starting a new child care business did not come without trepidation, but Britt has learned not to let that stop her. “For me, the key has been challenging fear – being afraid, but doing it anyway,” she admits. “I’m very risk averse, so it’s easy for me to get stuck in the comfort zone. Only when I have challenged my comfort zone and stepped outside the box have I experienced growth and success – in both life and career.” What have been her most gratifying moments? “Seeing the kids’ smiling faces, knowing that we are providing a safe and nurturing environment for them to play, learn, and just be kids,” Britt declares. “There’s absolutely nothing like it. It’s also neat to see the parents’ reactions when their kids don’t want to leave! It’s like a sense of relief that they’ve found child care they can trust and their kids actually enjoy. That’s the environment and experience we strive to recreate each and every day at Kids & Main Playcare.” Kids & Main Playcare is located at 755 Lawrenceville Suwanee Rd. in Lawrenceville. WORK.

By Kristen Eleveld On a warm day in May, hundreds of people from dozens of towns and communities gathered at the Bethesda Aquatic Center in Lawrenceville. They came from different backgrounds, different jobs, and different lives. But one thing bound them together: they loved someone with special needs. Each spectator was there to cheer on a loved one at the first No Limits TryAthlon, an event designed especially for people with movement and cognitive challenges. It was a true sporting spectacle. Participants between the ages of four and 21 years old with a variety of developmental challenges showed exactly how tough they were by getting through a triathlon course that consisted of biking, running, and swimming. All About Kids Therapy Services, Inc., and Swim Angelfish partnered together to give these kids the chance to push themselves to their highest ability. “We feel it is extremely important for the special needs population to have the opportunity to participate in a competitive environment where they are comfortable and are supported by the community,” said Aimee Eblen, coowner of All About Kids Therapy Services, Inc. “As pediatric therapists, we think it’s vital to get into the community and turn what we do in therapy into an event that looks like one that typical peers can do,” added Erin Bishop, one of the TryAthlon coordinators. “We want to give everyone with special needs the confidence to look into other activities within the community.” Participants with all degrees of skill and ability were invited to compete. Some had to overcome physical challenges – some were working through cognitive challenges – but every participant was given the tools needed to succeed. Volunteers and therapists stood ready to assist those who needed it, whether it involved swimming alongside their special needs partner, pushing a wheelchair over the finish line, or cheering a participant on as he or she biked the trail. At the end of the day, the victory was shared by all. “It’s so important to go the extra step to provide the opportunity for a child with special needs to be able to participate in community events and be inclusive,” said Bishop, who is also a pediatric therapist. “We are focused on removing the stigma that someone can’t be included or that they can’t do something just because they need a little extra help.” All About Kids Therapy Services, Inc. and Swim Angelfish plan to make this a bi-annual event, and have high hopes for inviting even more participants for the next TryAthlon. But no matter the size of the event, the goal will always be the same: To give people with special needs the opportunity to prove to their community just how unlimited they are. throughout. An added benefit the new office brings to the community is increased curb appeal and effective use of a long vacant office space on Grayson‘s busiest road. The recently updated website features practice videos, reviews, and video testimonials, along with educational information for current and prospective patients. Dr. Russell and his team indeed “go the extra smile” for their patients and the community. If you didn’t get a chance to meet them for all the fun games and giveaways last month at Grayson Day, you will likely see them in the area connecting from time to time. In addition, they are heavily involved with our local schools, from sports team sponsorships to hosting a pizza luncheon each year for teacher planning days. Every year, they also provide nicely bound school calendars to local dentists that include school district information to assist each office in scheduling patient appointments around multiple school-system holidays and breaks. As you begin seeing Russell Orthodontics more and more around town, you’ll notice their ongoing car magnet contest is quite popular with both patients and non-patients alike. Be sure to connect with their social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram to see what’s going on and how to participate. For those young patients who Dr. Russell determines are not quite ready to start orthodontic treatment, they can join the “Smile Squad kids-club” in which they are carefully guided toward braces during their adolescent years. Be sure to check out Dr. Russell’s Google reviews to see how patients RAVE about this wonderful orthodontic practice! More information at SmilesByRussell.com or call 770.236.9660.

Travel Tales: The Special Wines of Uruguay By Pam Walker I must admit it – I am a wine snob! I love the taste of the grape, be it Italian, New Zealand, or Napa. I had heard that in a sleepy little country in South America there was a wine that I had never tasted, so I decided to travel there to check out the wine scene of Uruguay. Everyone has heard of the famed Punta Del Este – THE party and beach destination of the rich and famous from the world over. But no one I talked to had ever heard of Tannat grapes and wine. Many people disembark from their cruise ships in Montevideo, but they have seldom traveled to some of Uruguay’s amazing vineyards and haciendas. The Uruguayans are proud of their Tannat grapes, brought over from the south of France many years ago. Until now, they have kept it a lovely secret much as they have kept their country a wonderful little secret. There are no spectacular landscapes – unless you call long stretches of white beaches special. The hills are low and rolling, covered with lovely farms green with soy beans and grape vines. They also have herds of Black Angus cows to feed the voracious appetites of Uruguayans and Argentinians, since Argentina is on the other side of the river that separates the countries. Yes, beef and wine are some of the best things about Uruguay. There are lovely hotels and estancias just waiting for visitors. VIK hotels have two wonderful beachfront properties brimming with the work of local artists. They also have a beautiful Estancia (also filled with art and sculptures) where you can ride horseback, mountain bike through the vineyards, or just relax by the pool. That said, most days are filled by visiting vineyards and wineries for tasting the wonderful wines. They do have Cabernets, Chardonnays, and many more types of grapes, but the Tannat grape is their secret harvest. Uruguay is a wonderful little country and a spectacular place to enjoy some very special wines!

Monroe Classic Car Show Continued from page 13 about the Memories in Monroe Classic Car Show is that many of its contestants are repeat participants. “They come every year, and that’s always a pleasant feeling for us,” said Walker. Each year is a success, but it couldn’t have been done without the collaboration, participation, and cooperation of neighboring businesses of the historic Walton County Courthouse. Business owners and staff members worked together to assist drivers with parking and helping individuals navigate through the crowd. Some stores even held their grand openings on the day of the auto show. Patrons enjoyed food and beverages prepared by local restaurants, cafes, and food trucks. One local bakery just opened its doors in early 2018, but gained notoriety as it sold out of its unique cupcakes that included flavors such as maple bacon, pistachio, and caramel pretzel. So, if you’re a classic car enthusiast, and you want to have some good old fashion fun, enjoy some mouth-watering treats, and catch an eye-popping glimpse of some of the most beautiful vintage babes around in 2019, you might want to polish up your ride and get ready to cruise on down to Monroe, GA!

Pet Perch: The Importance of Follow Through in Dog Training By Terie Hansen When consulting with a prospective training client, I am often asked, “How much training will my dog need?” My answer, “That depends on many variables. Your dog, of course; but mostly on your consistency and follow through in applying the techniques you will be learning.” Dog training isn’t rocket science. It’s knowing the dog, applying techniques repetitively, and being consistent in following through to make sure the dog does as asked 100% of the time. Oftentimes when meeting new clients, I observe them rattling off commands to their dog (often several times), and their dog does not execute the command and the owner does nothing. Of course, that is why I am there – to teach them how to have a dog that will listen. The problem, however, does not lie with the dog, but with the owner. The answer very simply is, say what you mean and mean what you say. No negotiation (given it’s a known command). This is important when working with dogs because if you don’t follow through 100% of the time, you’re confusing your dog and not being fair either. If you are not consistent in making the dog do what you’ve asked, you’ll be the proud owner of a “Sometimes Dog” – sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t – because sometimes you make them listen and sometimes you don’t! We all make mistakes. Even highly trained bomb/drug sniffing dogs make mistakes. So even when you are 100% consistent in following through, there will be times when your dog doesn’t perform a command or task. This is not as important as what YOU do following that. If I give my dog a known command such as sit/stay and she gets up, I do not repeat the command, I simply say “no” and take her back to the place of the stay. I am never angry or frustrated (I wouldn’t want someone mad at me for making a mistake). It’s just matter of fact. She must stay until released. Bottom line – want a more consistent dog? Be consistent and follow through. Terie Hansen is Owner at Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care. More information at www.gooddogcoaching.com

The Balancing Act By Jocelyn Wykoff Growing up, I stayed pretty busy with sports and hobbies. I loved playing HORSE in the driveway, riding my bike around the neighborhood for hours, and hanging out with friends. As I matured, my hobbies naturally did, too. In my early twenties, it was late nights with friends and concerts, to marriage and our first child. Now, in my thirties, while my idea of fun has evolved and continues to grow, somewhere along the way I felt like I lost me and the things I like to do. I can remember one night, a year or two ago, sobbing on the phone with my husband who was out of town – we’re talking complete pity party with massive tears – and I told him that I felt like I had nothing to show for myself. Don’t get me wrong. I love being a wife and a mother and having a career, but I’ve caught myself a handful of times wondering if it is truly satisfying. For example, let’s say the kids were at Nana and Pop’s house and my husband was on a fishing trip, what would I find myself doing? The embarrassing yet honest answer would be, I’d be catching up on housework and going to bed early. I feel almost certain that this is how most moms feel, but if they are anything like me, they chose not to say anything for fear of being judged. So, putting my best foot forward, I made a resolution this year to concentrate on me. I’m a natural skeptic, so I really didn’t believe I would make it too far. But believe it or not, I’ve learned more about me these last four months than I’ve known for a long while. Parts of the “old” me have resurfaced and I have a newfound confidence. I am no longer tabling projects for another day or saying “One day” to myself. I have become my own visionary and executer. Most importantly, I have found that I never lost myself or my hobbies. I am a wife, a mother, and a business woman, and I work hard every day to be good at these things and to make sure everyone is happy. Life is good, and I seem to be pretty good at life. Happy thoughts and reads until next time. Jocelyn Wykoff is a dreamer, believer, wife, and mompreneur of the Wykoff Household.

Gwinnett United in Drug Education (GUIDE), Inc. is a community engagement organization located in Lawrenceville that focuses on substance use and abuse prevention and positive youth development. GUIDE was founded in 1986 as a partnership between the county’s Board of Commissioners and Board of Education. Gwinnett County did not have a widespread drug problem at the time, and they wanted to be proactive in preventing underage drug and alcohol use. As a stand-alone entity, GUIDE is a non-profit organization that continues to receive support from the founding boards through in-kind donations. They also receive funding from several state entities and various foundations and fundraisers, and they partner with other organizations around the county to accomplish their mission. By utilizing partnerships with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, Department of Communications, and many other departments, as well as other non-profits, GUIDE is able to have a greater impact on the community. One way the organization leverages community partners is through compliance checks with the Gwinnett County Police Department and several city police departments around the county to make sure employees follow current laws and ordinances, that they don’t sell alcohol to teens and underage young adults, and that they check IDs. Underage decoys visit local restaurants, gas stations, and convenience, grocery, and drug stores to attempt to buy alcohol. If the employee does not ask for ID and sells or serves the decoy alcohol, then the employee receives a citation from the police officer or detective. Compliance checks are a well-known effective strategy to reduce the number of youths having access to alcohol. GUIDE’s longest running program is their summer Georgia Teen Institute. Started in 1989, this flagship program brings youth groups, called Youth Action Teams, together from around the state where teens learn to identify needs in their own communities and to formulate plans to address them. The youth are taught to ask why drugs and alcohol are used, and to approach the root cause. Many of the staff at GUIDE attended the program as teens. The current executive director, Jessica AndrewsWilson, attended Teen Institute before becoming a volunteer, an intern, and then an employee. She is proud of the fact that staff and volunteers believe in the program so much that many have been volunteering for as long as thirty years. Through the Youth Action Teams that attended Teen Institute, more than 150,000 youths were reached in 2017 through projects, events, and meetings. These groups, which include nine from Gwinnett County, engaged more than 3,600 volunteers in over 14,000 volunteer hours last year. The projects and events included distributing information and hosting tables at health fairs and community events, working with younger youth to teach prevention messages, conducting prevention obstacle courses, and participating in advocacy days to engage legislators. Andrews-Wilson wants county residents to know GUIDE is there to help. As they effect change at the community level, they are willing to speak with parents, adults, youth, and community leaders about ways to prevent and reduce drug and alcohol abuse in their homes and communities. Local in Lawrenceville: Beer Republic Brewing By Our Town Staff

It begins with a plan Planning is everything, particularly when it comes to your long-term financial objectives.

It It begins begins with with aa plan plan

Beer Republic Brewing, LLC joined together with the City of Lawrenceville to announce the opening of their new regional craft brewery to downtown Lawrenceville. The existing facility, located at 394 North Clayton Street, will be converted into a 56,000 square foot, state-of-the-art brewery, taproom, and retail shop. The announcement represents the addition of more than fifty new jobs over the next five years. Lawrenceville City Manager Chuck Warbington stated, “The City of Lawrenceville is excited to welcome Beer Republic Brewing to its downtown. This project supports the community’s vision for redevelopment while offering opportunity for expanded downtown amenities, a walkable retail feature, and new jobs to the area. At the end of the day, it’s a project that makes sense on many levels, and we are very pleased to have them as a corporate partner in our growing renaissance.” Beer Republic is the parent company for Big Kettle Brewing and Ironshield Beer, and will become one of Georgia’s top-five largest breweries. The organization will be operating from the Clayton Street location, with Big Kettle Brewing providing contract-brewing services for other craft breweries in Georgia and the Southeast. Ironshield Beer will be Beer Republic’s own house brand, and will encompass more than thirty proven award-winning beers, ranging from Munich-style lagers, German Bocks, Pilseners, Belgian Trappist-style ales, a Scotch Ale, and an authentic Bavarian Hefeweizen wheat beer. Owners Dave Rice and Glen Sprouse bring more than fifty years of combined experience to the business in professional brewing and beverage production, packaging, engineering, and marketing. The new employment opportunities that the brewery will bring to the local economy will range from brewers, cellarmen, lab technicians, packaging operators and managers, marketing, sales, administrative, and skilled labor, with a heavy emphasis on full-time positions with benefits. “Beer Republic Brewing’s relocation to downtown Lawrenceville presented a strategic opportunity to invest in a thriving and growing local economy, while bringing in a major player in an industry that has become a driving economic force,” commented Rice. “We are excited to be able to participate in the energy and growth of Lawrenceville, and we hope to make it ‘the place to go’ for great craft beer.” Beer Republic received zoning approval at the city’s Planning Commission meeting and looks to renovate the space and be open for business prior to the end of 2018. Crane’s Corner: Health Matters

TNT Academy Presents

By Bill Crane “Yoga is light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame,” B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014), author, Yogi, and one of the foremost Yoga teachers in modern history. Nearly fifteen years ago, and for nearly five years, I regularly practiced yoga. When I was getting in at least three classes a week, my overall fitness was almost as good as it had ever been. I wasn’t sure anything could take me back to that year 40 – in terms of fitness or even general mobility – but I recently decided I had to try. So, I put some rigor to that New Year’s resolution and I resumed my yoga practice. Now just a few months into this year, practicing almost daily, I feel nearly twenty years better. Anyone can practice yoga. Any age, weight, gender, body size, or type can benefit. Over time and repeat practice, you begin to master a series of health and life-changing skills. Some sound simple and easy, but aren’t; others seem implausible and possibly impossible, but often reveal themselves over time. It is an inexpensive sport or hobby – or as some view it – lifestyle choice. Equipment needs are very minimal. The basics and core of yoga are its most essential elements. BREATHE, concentrate on the practice and on each position. Release other thoughts, cleanse the mind, release stress and your other cares of the day. Practice at least three times per week and you will almost immediately notice differences in you. The Best Part: Though much of the yoga world is “new age” and includes philosophy, Sanskrit quotes, and a softer, gentler approach to life, maintaining a daily or near daily practice also requires being a bit selfish. You need to carve out at least one hour per day or per practice completely for you. Add in parking/driving to class, cleaning up after, etc., and you are really capturing nearly two hours of that day. Besides lowering my blood pressure, I have found that the yoga breathing and occasional meditation has improved my ability to relax and even to sleep better. I’ve lost weight, regained muscle tone, regained full range of motion in every limb, increased flexibility, and eliminated most all recurring pain. Much like any other athletic endeavor, the more and longer you consistently practice, the better you get. You will never see me on the cover of Yoga Journal, but several of my poses are coming along quite nicely, particularly for an old guy with formerly ZERO flexibility in my lower back. All yoga studios and teachers are not alike. Some push too hard, and a few are prone a bit to proselytize, but those instructors are generally far between. Ask around. Try out the local Y, or the many churches, businesses, and recreation centers that regularly offer free or very inexpensive sessions. Choose the studio and teachers that feel the best for you. The Worst Part: Though the percentages are different, and more men now practice yoga, including professional athletes and pretty much the entire entertainment industry, I still receive odd looks or incredulous reaction when I tell people, “I have plans – practicing yoga again tonight.” Or when I share that other than my kids, the frequent best parts of my weekends these days are the Saturday and Sunday yoga practices. The reactions don’t bother me anymore, and as I regained my college waistline about a week ago, I stopped feeling any need to explain. I still wish though that I could do a better job of explaining these benefits so that more people I know would simply just give one practice a try. Years ago, as I sought shortcuts and a bit more direction on which type of yoga was most effective, one of my wisest instructors said simply, “Just DO the Yoga.” The rest will take care of itself. Try it. It’s never too late. Namaste, y’all. Crane is the senior political analyst with WSB Radio and TV and owns the full-service communications consulting firm, CSI Crane. Special congratulations to Tyler Butler for being elected as a SkillsUSA State Officer. He is the third Gwinnett Tech student elected to one of the statewide leadership posts. Butler’s position on the board will be determined at an upcoming officer retreat this summer. Dr. D. Glen Cannon, president of Gwinnett Technical College, shares, “These results reflect an outstanding level of academic commitment and leadership. Gwinnett Tech students continue to prove again and again that they are some of the very best in Georgia.” SkillsUSA contests begin locally and continue through state and national levels. State Gold Medalists now have the opportunity to compete in the SkillsUSA 54th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY, June 25-29, 2018. The National SkillsUSA Championships showcase the skills of post-secondary students through hands-on competitions in leadership, health occupations, trades/industry, and technical contests. More than 16,000 students, teachers, and business partners participated in the weeklong national competition. SkillsUSA is a national, nonprofit student organization that has developed more than 10 million workers through active partnerships between employers and education. Hundreds of American industries have turned to SkillsUSA as the source for employees who exemplify “Champions at Work” in both skills and attitudes. SkillsUSA’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens. SkillsUSA improves the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structure program of citizenship, leadership, employability, and technical and professional skills training.
