On the Cover: Providence Christian Academy: Celebrating 25 years of Growth and Excellence By Rachael Brice For the last twenty-five years, Providence Christian Academy has maintained the vision of its founders and its high standards of academic achievement and spiritual growth, as well as opportunities for personal growth through athletics and fine art programs. Providence first opened its doors on September 6, 1991, to 354 students, grades K-12. Director of Communications Stephen Daniels said founding board members weren’t even sure if the school would survive two to five years. “We didn’t have any ball fields or a gymnasium, and a few stores were still a part of the shopping center during the first few years of the school’s history,” he said. “But to be able to look back on all that God has done and see the growth of the school, not only in terms of our size but the expansion of our programs, including athletics, and drama, has been amazing.” Providence has certainly seen enormous growth through the years. The original one-building facility has developed into a campus encompassing nearly 200,000 square feet of indoor space on thirty-five acres, and supports an enrollment of over 650 students. This year is a big year for the school. Not only is it celebrating its 25th anniversary, but also the grand opening of the new 11-acre sports complex. An ongoing project since 2009, the $4.2 million complex boasts a multipurpose soc-
cer/football field, a track, six tennis courts, a softball field, and a field house. “The complex is the last piece of the puzzle,” Daniels said. “Everyone has been anxiously anticipating the completion of this project, especially our student athletes, who for twentyfive years have never been able to practice their sport or play a home game on their own turf.” However, Providence athletics isn’t the only program to see extensive growth this year. Both the academic and fine arts sectors have also seen advancements. “Providence is always looking for ways to enlarge its academic programs,” Daniels said. “We like to stay on the leading edge when it comes to the programs we’re offering our students, so this current school year we expanded our Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program from our high school students to our elementary and middle school students.” STEM provides students with hands-on learning experiences and empowers students to learn the art of problem solving. Providence has even added two STEM labs for its younger students, and is the only private school in the state of Georgia with a nationally certified STEM program in place where all students have access. Providence’s fine arts program has also greatly broadened this year by adding a mid-semester musical. The Little Mermaid was a huge hit, selling out every show. Providence Continued on page 24

Our Town
By Ryan T. Sauers
@RyanSauers
Nearly everything we read, listen to, and watch is tied to media sensationalism. And it is mostly negative in nature. We hear of dirty politics, shootings, health epidemics, and many other tensions. Media is programmed to “shock us” into listening. They talk about robbery, murders, assaults, scandals, lawsuits and more. Why do we seldom hear about a neighbor helping a stranger charge their battery in a parking lot, or about volunteers picking up trash from the roads in our community? Why don’t we hear about community members who adopted children to make their lives better, or about the local law and emergency heroes who risk their lives for us each day? Instead of hearing about a teacher who works on her own time to help a student pass a course or grades papers all weekend long, we hear of a handful of educators who mess up. Where are the stories about the great parks and schools in the neighborhood, or about homes that are selling and being built in a rapid manner? Instead we hear the negative news about construction of new schools or neighborhoods. Folks, growth is a good thing. We have two options in life. We are either moving forward or going backward. There is no such thing as staying the same. Most people I know simply want a better life for themselves and their family. People are sick of the negative news. This is where we come in. We supply original local content that you do not get anywhere else. You get it in print, online, and thru social channels. Anyone with an online or offline magazine can run generic articles found on the internet. It is quick and easy, and one Google search away. However, it is UNINSPIRING, LAZY, and BORING. It takes true dedication to have local writers cover one organic story at a time. It is the extra effort that makes all the difference in any organization in 2016 and beyond. This is what we are all about. We smile as “competitors” seemingly copy our every move. They fail to realize this is the ultimate compliment or that we are already working on mid 2017 stuff. Readers demand great content and this is what we provide (online, offline, and social). We are not merely a magazine but a media connection point, based on trust and faith, that helps the community prosper and great news to spread. The people I know love being part of this community. Many have amazing stories of what they are doing to make our community a better place. This is what Our Town is all about. We never focus (and never will) on the negative stories that serve no purpose but to upset others. Does this mean our community is perfect? Of course not. There is no such thing on this earth. However, in all my travels across the United States, I can find few places that have a greater sense of community than we do right here. You should be proud of that. I am. We are defying what the news media says is possible in 2016. Why? From my vantage point, this community is a true throwback, one that cares about each other. We see people trying to make a difference here and in the world. We see families who love each other and friends who care for one another. We see neighbors who look out for each other. You see, this community consists of people of character. This is what I love about it. I am thankful for this community and our (3F) focus of…faith, families, and friendships. We may have our differences, but we look out for one another first. Quite frankly, I see a lot more of what we have in common than what we do not. Where we work, live, and play is special. Thanks for allowing us to continue sharing and being part of the story of my town, your town, OUR TOWN.

The Amanda Riley Foundation Gives Kids 1,000 Reasons to Smile By Karla Socci Somers “I had six events in seven days and I’m not slowing down again until Wednesday,” Barbara Riley says matter-of-factly. This is just a typical week for Riley, founder of the Amanda Riley Foundation, who, along with family, friends, and dedicated volunteers, is on a mission to give kids with cancer – specifically those diagnosed with solid tumor cancers, the type her daughter, Amanda, battled – 1,000 Reasons to Smile. “I just spent a fun day with Olivia, a twelve-year-old girl who wanted to go on a shopping spree,” says Riley. “We picked her up in a limo and gave her $1,000 to spend on all the things twelve-year-old girls like to buy.” She went on to say that the Foundation granted three wishes in March – two shopping sprees and an iPhone for a teen girl who did not have a phone along with a trip to the Tennessee Aquarium. The mission of 1,000 Reasons to Smile is to grant kids’ wishes to help make their dreams come true, with an approximate budget of $1,000 for each child and his or her family. Along with this newest initiative, The Amanda Riley Foundation, now in its sixth year, continues to honor Barbara and Steve’s daughter Amanda by providing support to children and their families while they undergo treatment with the AFLAC Cancer Center at Scottish Rite Hospital. Each Monday, the Foundation brings lunch to more than eighty patients, parents, and staff. They also donate snack baskets, gift and goody bags, care packages, and other necessities to try to make each family’s hospital stay just a little more comfortable. Each Christmas, the Foundation showers the children and their families with gifts at their annual Breakfast with Santa, and the number of gifts given continues to grow. This past holiday season, ninety-five children received presents to help make their Christmas a little brighter. The Amanda Riley Foundation hosts three major annual fundraising events: Miles-for-Smiles at Tribble Mill Park with a 10K, 5K, and fun-run; Gala-4-Gold dinner and auction; and their newest endeavor, the recently held Carnival 4 A Cause at Brookwood High School. Next month the Foundation will host its 6th annual Miles-4-Smiles Race/Walk at beautiful Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville on June 11th. The event will include certified 5K and 10K runs as well as a Mile Fun Run and Festival. It is geared for everyone from the most elite runner to the occasional walker. It will be a fun filled event for everyone. For information and registration, visit the foundation website at www.amandarileyfoundation.org. As with all Foundation events, one hundred percent goes directly to helping the children and their families. That’s why Riley and her volunteers work hard year round to raise money. All of it goes to support the kids – also known as “Riley Warriors” – and to make them smile, something for which 17-year-old Amanda was well-known. Recently, Riley was honored and recognized with a Servant Leadership Award by the Georgia Women’s Legislative Caucus. She was nominated for the award by State Senator Butler. The Foundation was also voted Gwinnett Magazine’s Best of Gwinnett Nonprofit for 2015. “I’m going on another shopping spree tomorrow with another little girl,” Riley says, cheerfully. Just another day in the life of a mom who has dedicated herself to giving children 1,000 Reasons to Smile. Barbara Riley is the founder of The Amanda Riley Foundation. Skin So Simple: Who Really Needs a Facial? By Lisa Clinkscale Porter, Aesthetician Everyone, regardless of skin type, experiences various changes in the skin throughout his/her lifetime. These changes will be a direct result of your lifestyle (cigarettes, alcohol, etc.), diet, sleeping habits, genes, and how well you care for your skin. One thing we all have in common is that our skin goes through what is referred to as the keratinization process approximately every 28-30 days. This is the body’s way of shedding dead or damaged (keratinized) skin cells that are covering the live, healthy skin cells that lie beneath. This shedding process does not provide a thorough, complete shedding, which is why it is necessary to help it along by manually exfoliating the entire body, especially the face. A facial is a lot more than just having your face washed, which is why it is not something that can easily be achieved at home. The big misconception is that a facial is just for relaxation purposes, but the truth is a facial has many benefits. First, a great facial begins with a licensed and experienced aesthetician who knows the key to healthy skin is consistency, commitment, and products that will change both the texture and appearance of the skin. Next, an aesthetician should customize your facial based on your skin’s needs. During the most basic facial, the skin should be cleansed, toned, exfoliated, analyzed, and steamed, and, depending on the condition of your skin, extractions may or may not be necessary. Then, the appropriate masque, moisturizer, and an SPF are applied. A customized at-home skin care plan is developed to maintain healthy skin between professional treatments. Everyone should get a facial at least once per month or more, depending on individual goals. This should start as early as thirteen years old. Once the skin has been neglected, it is far more difficult to improve its appearance or reverse any damage. Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with a facial that feels good, but why not make it good for you? When you think of a facial, necessity should come to mind rather than luxury. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. How does yours look? Lisa Clinkscale Porter is owner of Unique Face Options, Inc. Gwinnett County Spotlight: QUEST Internship for Success! By Daidra Annis While the QUEST Internship program has been part of Gwinnett County Public Schools since the 1980s, the number of participants has almost doubled in size in recent years. To put it in perspective, the program has historically placed an average of 100 students in qualified internships per semester, but actually placed 185 students this past fall, and they are on track to place 200 students in the fall of 2016. As a result, they are looking for additional community members to serve as student mentors. A QUEST Internship is open to gifted-identified juniors and seniors from Gwinnett County public schools. The students must have reliable transportation and pass additional screening criteria at their local school. Students prepare a resume, and then interview with Mrs. Kristen Drake, who will also ask them to tell her what interests them about the company and career(s) they have chosen. As the program has grown, students are now tasked with the responsibility of doing their own research to explore what companies, and/or careers are of interest, much like adults do in the real world when looking for employment. Through this approach, the students have become more engaged, taking ownership of their decisions. Because the students can participate in QUEST from one to four semesters, there is an opportunity to explore different careers and companies in order to find a good fit for a future occupation. A recent placement occurred with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner, which was the first time that department had partnered with QUEST. Engineering, medical, and marketing are among the most popular career choices. QUEST is always looking for people in the community to serve as mentors in all career fields. Mentors often say that they learn from the interns, and enjoy shaping the future workforce. Students with QUEST Internships are released from school early each day and work an average of five to six hours per week for their employer, usually working two or three days a week. A time sheet is signed off by the mentor, and can include a mentor evaluation or student reflection. Mrs. Drake meets with students in the program two times per year, where they gain valuable feedback. For her, one of the most exciting things to see is a student’s growth throughout the semester. One success story deals with a student who is now attending Kennesaw State University. She Continued on page 13

Getting Schooled with Crews Middle School: Learn While You Sweat By Rachael Brice It is evident that Rod Hames and Frank Hedrick have a passion for middle school students and molding young minds. However, not many teachers get to invest in their students like they do. Early in his career at Trickum Middle School, Hames discovered intramural sports play a big part in a student’s life if he or she doesn’t play recreation or travel ball. Since Gwinnett County doesn’t offer many intramural programs for middle school students, Hames began working alongside a colleague to create an afterschool intramural program. Hames’ first introduction to middle school intramurals occurred when he and his colleague took twelve students to Mystery Valley at Stone Mountain Park to teach them how to play golf. They even provided golf carts and clubs as an incentive for the students to learn. In 1998, Hames transferred to Crews Middle School to teach Business and Computer Education, but he brought the idea of middle school intramural sports with him. Eighteen years later, Hames and Hedrick oversee the school’s intramural programs and other extracurricular activities and have been blown away by the level of student participation. “The intramural program has exploded over the last few years,” Hames said. “Whether it’s the running club or the newly developed tennis club, both Hedrick and I are eager for the future of Crews’ intramural program and for its participants.” Last fall, the running club, sponsored by the Atlanta Track Club, registered 180 students to run a 5K (3.1 miles) three days a week. After the last bell rings, students head to the gym to warm up and stretch, and then they run down to Alexander Park and back. The goal is for the students to run a marathon (26.2 miles) over the course of eleven weeks, and as each student meets each five mile mark, the Atlanta Track Club awards them with a prize including Mizuno water bottles, backpacks, or sunglasses. “Every week we have about sixty 6th graders, thirty 7th graders, and twenty-five 8th graders run with us,” Hedrick said. “We even have parents and other teachers come run with us, too. We have a great time connecting with the students outside the classroom, and the program has turned into a great success.” Since it’s been so successful, Crews decided to partner with Coach Carlos Soler, a Brookwood High School tennis coach, to start a tennis intramural program. “We started the program last fall and had such a great turnout, we wanted to open the door to more students to come and play who didn’t get a chance last time,” Hedrick said. This year, every Tuesday and Thursday, fifty Crews students jog down to a neighborhood tennis court to learn fundamental drills and participate together in mini tennis games. The goal for the program is to continue to build upon the skills the students learned last year, and for them to participate in a mini round robin tournament at the end, leveraging the skills they have learned. “This program is a great way for students to get involved in extracurricular activities, make new friends, learn a new skill, but most importantly, learn how to serve others and give back to the community,” Hedrick said. When Hedrick isn’t teaching Physical Education or Health or helping support the running or tennis programs, he is serving as the Student Government Coordinator for the Student Government Association (SGA). For this 100 percent community service oriented, studentsponsored program, Hedrick leads 120 students and teaches them about the importance of giving back to the school and the community, whether financially or through volunteer opportunities. Since 2009, SGA has raised over $20,000 to donate back to the school. New carpets, outside benches for the bus lanes, and frames to decorate the walls are just a few items the students have helped purchase to make the school a better place for all who attend. • Since Hames is also the Business Partner Liaison for Crews, he and Hedrick work together to bring people like Georgia Senator P.K. Martin and others from Georgia Gwinnett College and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to network with and to present ideas to the SGA students to• help accrue funds for the school, specifically for the developing wellness program. SGA also raises funds from selling Chick-fil-A biscuits on Wednesday mornings, candy grams for Valentine’s• Day, and Boo grams for Halloween. Ultimately, whether it’s through the intramural program, SGA, or the classroom, Hames and Hedrick aim to teach their students the value of giving back the community and developing• future, successful leaders in society. “We’re both big on partnerships and teaching,” Hames said, “but we’re most interested in helping students understand how to apply what they’re learning in life. We have great textbooks,• and today’s technology is wonderful; but some things you can’t learn from books or technology, but you can learn by doing. That’s why we teach our students that they can do so much more as• a group than as an individual. It’s all about the application.” More information at http://www.crews.org/.

Fitness Foundations: Maintaining Weight-Loss By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT You have reached your weight-loss goals. Good job! Now comes the process of figuring out how to maintain all that hard work. • Write it down! Keep a food log for three days to get a baseline of your eating habits. If pen and paper are not for you, then there are several really good food tracking apps available. • Be honest with yourself. What must take place for you to adhere to a regimen? If it feels impossible, modify the plan to make it possible. • Clean house. Your home must support you in your efforts to maintain your weight-loss. Let the cookies stay at the grocery store and not in your cupboards. • Stay on the move! Find physical activities that you love and do them often. They can be more focused on maintenance than results and should easily incorporate into your life’s routine. • Reach out to like-minded friends, family, and members of your community. A little support and a workout buddy can go a long way toward keeping you on track. • Get on the scale! Keeping tabs on your weight can alert you to fluctuations and allow for adjustments accordingly. Research has found this to be KEY in maintaining weight-loss. • Make yourself accountable. Find a weight loss coach. Reporting your monthly behavior and status to another person can be an extra incentive to stick to any plan. Reaching a weight-loss goal is an amazing achievement. If you are strong enough to reach that goal in the first place, you are strong enough to maintain it. You owe it to yourself! You are going to do GREAT! St. John Neumann Regional Catholic School: Thirty Years of Excellence in the Community By Karla Socci Somers “We consider our community involvement to be one of our unique strengths,” says Vicki Diaz, Admissions and Development Director of St. John Neumann Regional Catholic School (SJNRCS) in Lilburn, Georgia. It is rather befitting that the two patron saints of St. John Neumann Regional Catholic School were passionate about education and caring for the poor. As a Catholic seeking ordination into the priesthood when he came to America in 1836, St. John Neumann dedicated his life to serving the poor, and was the first bishop to organize what we know today as the diocesan Catholic school system. St. Marguerite d’Youville, the school’s other patron saint, was the foundress of Sisters of Charity of Montreal (the Grey Nuns) who established schools, hospitals, and orphanages to take care of the impoverished. The compassion and dedication of these two saints to those less fortunate continue today through the many service projects that the students and faculty at SJNRCS incorporate into their lives every day under the leadership of Principal Alex Porto. Recently, SJNRCS families and faculty gathered in the school cafeteria for “Stewardship Sunday” where they made more than 2,500 deli sandwiches for Clyde’s Kitchen, which has been providing meals for Atlanta’s poor and homeless for the past twenty-four years. “Events like these, where we give our time, talent, and monies are not unusual for us,” Diaz notes. “In fact, each grade level [Kindergarten through eighth grade] has its very own service project.” In addition to excellence in serving the community, SJNRCS offers its students a first-rate eduContinued on page 15

completed her QUEST internship with a local law firm, and received a scholarship to KSU. She has since been offered a work-study position as a freshman, which is rare. QUEST gave her the advantage over the juniors and seniors who had also applied. But the internships are not just about employment and actual job skills. Students improve in the areas of communication and “soft skills” (punctuality, dress code, professionalism, etc.), and they understand the importance of finding the right career path and being passionate about one’s job. They have found that their mentors do not always love their profession. The same goes for students and the internships they have chosen, as some discover that the career they thought they wanted was actually not a good fit for them. It’s times like this that the program is most successful by identifying and guiding a student toward a career of passion and excellence. And, as Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Contact Kristen_drake@gwinnnett.k12.ga.us for more information

Words of Wisdom for Young Parents By Ann Weeks Over the past ten years as I manage my childcare center, my own home, and personal and business relationships, I find that I “hear” the words of wisdom my grandparents and parents recited to me when I was a child, teen, young woman, and mother. How often did you hear an adult relative say, “You learn something new every day”? EVERY day I learn something new. I have very creative teachers who live by those words, as demonstrated in their lesson plans for the children, the bugs they collect on the playground, the activities, and the one-on-one moments with a child throughout the day. You, too, can learn something every day. My father liked to say, “It is not a mistake if you don’t do it again.” I have said that to myself after I have managed a crisis or situation that did not go as well as I had hoped. I have said, “I won’t do that again!” When the next crisis occurs, I have a plan in mind that is a better and much more effective and positive. We teach the same concept to the children! We can learn from our mistakes. Young children need frequent reminders. You, too, can learn from your mistakes. The saying “older and wiser” applies to me as well. I have been around for over half a century. My life experiences have shaped my attitude, my outlook, my approach to others, and my roles in life. My staff seems to recognize this, and I find myself having very personal conversations with them once in a while. I have been given the name Nana Anna because they feel like I treat them as would a grandmother! When I am in that role, I recall my own grandmothers. I remember how safe I felt after I received a hug from mine, so I offer hugs. I request hugs, too. You, too, will become wiser as you get older. The saying “If momma is not happy, no one is happy” is true, too. However, as a “momma” you are responsible for your own happiness. As a young mother, teaching your children to respect authority, to be responsible for their own actions, to follow the rules, to maintain proper nutrition, and to get a good night’s sleep are parental responsibilities. Imagine what your children see and hear as they are strapped safely into their car seat. Now, imagine your child as a teen behind the wheel of the car on their first “solo.” Ask yourself about the example you have set for them. Do you follow the rules of the road? Do you drive too fast, text, or fuss and cuss at other drivers? “It is never too late” to be a better parent, spouse, teacher, boss, or friend! “It is never too late” to set a good example and to guide your child to grow up to be someone you are proud to call your own. You, too, will be happy you paid attention to the “words of wisdom.” Ann Weeks is Owner of Five Forks Academy. More information at http://www.fiveforksacademy. com/
770-972-3803 I firmly believe in settling cases if a fair settlement is possible, it saves time, money and stress. But if the other side is unreasonable, we will “see them in court.”

Chaplain’s Corner: Showing Kindness in an Unkind World By Rev. Rodrigo Cruz As a parent of three small children, I find myself often telling them to be kind: be kind to your brother and sister; be kind to mommy and daddy; be kind to Joy-Joy (our dog); be kind to your friends at school, at church, and in the neighborhood; and be kind to everyone else. I can proudly say that they often try and they are successful, but the reality is that they often also fail in their attempts. I still remember the first time my younger son came home from daycare crying because another kid was mean to him. He told my wife and me every single word that the other kid said, and how this kid made fun of his tennis shoes and t-shirt, and how he didn’t like his ninja-turtles blanket. My first reaction was probably similar to yours; that it wasn’t a big deal. Yet, my 3-year-old baby boy was hurt and disappointed, and was experiencing the reality that we live in an unkind and broken world. It only takes a couple of seconds to watch or listen to the news to become aware of the unkindness that surrounds us: from presidential candidates attacking one another, to governments and citizens blaming each other, to countries invading and destroying one another, to individuals killing others for the sake of their ideologies, beliefs, religions, and/or fears. We live indeed in an unkind and broken world. But we have not been called to conform to this world. We have not been created to build and live in an unkind world. We have not been given the opportunity to strive for goodness so we can waste it. We have been given a life and a mission to love one another, to respect one another, to extend grace to others, and to show kindness to one another, regardless. I strongly believe that when Jesus said, “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you,” He wasn’t kidding. Not only did He encourage us to do that, but He actually showed us how to do it around 2,000 years ago. It wasn’t easy for Him (it cost Him His life), and probably will not be easy for you and me (not sure what the price may be), but it is doable. Every day since that experience with my son, I give him a big hug and a big kiss when I drop him off at daycare. I pray for him and tell him, “Gabriel, find broken and do good.” I know he tries and I know he fails (sometimes he is the mean one), but I continue to encourage him and to
remind him that he can do it. Today I want to encourage you to do the same; in the midst of the challenges that you may be facing, in the midst of the brokenness that may be surrounding you, in the midst of the systematic evil that may be oppressing you, and in the midst of the unkindness that may be overwhelming you… FIND BROKEN AND DO GOOD. You can do it. Rodrigo Cruz is the Lead Pastor of The Nett Church. More information at www.thenettchurch.com.

Founded in 1986, the school will celebrate thirty years as a regional Catholic school in Gwinnett County, with the distinction of being a U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. They are also accredited through AdvancED. This combination of a caring, religious-centered learning environment, coupled with a state-of-the-art education, keeps families coming back generation after generation. “We currently have parents [of presently enrolled students] who were once graduates of SJNRCS,” says Principal Porto, “and nothing can be a bigger compliment and testament to our success than to have our alumni come back as parents.” The school, nestled in a quiet Lilburn neighborhood, is a model of metro Atlanta’s multicultural population. Approximately 300 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, compose a diverse community that represents heritages from all over the world. This past January the school celebrated their unique differences with its First Annual Peace and Justice Mass with Archbishop Gregory, giving students and families an opportunity to pray for peace all over the world. “Our school excels,” Porto notes, “because we challenge students to reach their full potential in spirit, mind, heart, and body.” It is evident that students retain much of what they learn at SJNRCS, both academically and spiritually, as they continue on their life journeys. Principal Porto reflects on the feedback he regularly receives from teachers and staff at the various public and private high schools SJNRCS alumni currently attends. “We can really tell the difference when a St. John Neumann student walks into the room,” Porto hears from these high school educators. “And, that to me, says it all…it’s not just about how well-prepared they are academically; it’s about the way they carry themselves; it’s about their integrity; it’s about their character. And those are things that really set our students apart from the others.” More information by following them on Facebook or at http://www.sjnrcs.org

Have you ever said something to a fellow student or classroom teacher, and right after you said it, you cringed, or the other person became angry or flustered? Being able to express yourself clearly with verbal communication is really important! Doing so can positively impact your friendships, academic success, and your job. In order to better insure you effectively communicate what you WANT to say, please read the following suggestions: 1. Make eye contact with whom you are talking to, and let him or her know you are fully engaged in the conversation. 2. Nod your head to encourage the person to continue talking and to show you are listening. 3. Keep a comfortable amount of personal space between you and the other person. 4. Carefully choose words that send the message you want. Be sure to pause and think before you speak. 5. Ask questions of the person you are talking to in order to insure you fully understand what he or she is saying. Doing so shows your interest and respect for the content of the conversation. 6. Carefully listen to the other person’s response. Listening well is critically important to avoid misunderstanding the other person’s intent. 7. If you know in advance that you will be talking with someone about something and are a bit anxious about the conversation, practice what you are going to say until your delivery is perfected. Think ahead about your response to any obstacles the other person may present. Remember, “short and sweet” is best. The more you say the greater chance of misunderstandings and challenges. You can get yourself in a mess by talking TOO much! 8. Speak clearly, not too fast or slow, and at a moderate volume. Talking too fast or too loud can indicate nervousness, lack of confidence, and/or frustration or anger. Talking too slow may come across as not knowing what you are talking about. You want to talk in a manner that sends a message of respect to the listener and indicates you are speaking with confidence. Continued on page 19

Up Close with Stone Mountain Community Center By Michelle Watson Stone Mountain Community Center is located at 5370 Stone Mountain Hwy in Stone Mountain at the far end of the Stone Mountain Square shopping center. Debra Adams and Chris Hales co-founded the community center to breathe life back into the local business area and to bring the community members together. Adams believes unity can be put back into a community if people band together and help each other. Adams had previously been involved in outreach ministry with her former church, where they had a vision for offering services on a larger scale, and of giving children and adults a safe place to learn and grow. She left her job in insurance to follow the calling she felt in her heart. Hales had been in construction and felt called to join Adams in this new venture. Hales’ expertise can be seen throughout the building as changes have been made to walls and rooms to accommodate the vision of the Center. Stone Mountain Community Center offers something of interest for everyone. Upon entering, there is a snack shop to the right where students can buy after-school snacks. On the left, there is a small conference room that is available for rent. There is a business center with computers for student use, and one large multi-purpose room, called The D’borah, that is also available for rent. The D’borah has a stage for plays and a large floor for parties, and houses church services every Sunday at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. In other multi-purpose rooms, dance and art classes are offered. The facility also offers a huge gym which allows for basketball play and an open gym for youth and adults on the weekends from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. There is also an indoor pool. The Center has a vision of empowering youth and adults. Anyone from ages 5 to 95 can find something of interest to do there. Drama, art, science, and other clubs are available for the kids, as well as kickball and flag football. There are basketball tournaments, karate, body sculpting, and workout Wednesday classes, and there is a mentoring program and college prep tutoring for those preparing for the SAT or ACT. Parents can be assured that their children are in a safe and loving environment. An on-site security company is available for all events. A behavior health provider will soon be on-site to offer services to those who need them. Stone Mountain Community Center is more than a gathering place. It is a ministry. Adams says, “God has a higher calling in what we do. This is supposed to be a place of love, laughter and fun.”

Something that I have always found so interesting is how much we dislike change. Now you might be someone who can go with the flow and be spontaneous, but that is not what I am talking about. We all have our habits and get into our routines. These habits sometimes restrict us from “productive change,” the type of change that is necessary if we are to create a healthy lifestyle and quality of life. A healthy lifestyle requires quality decisions every day. We are bombarded with advertising, convenience, and ample opportunities to make bad choices. Making “a” change in those routines will help make “healthy” changes a lot easier down the road. What if we brushed our teeth with our left hand instead of our right, put our left shoe on first and then our right, or slept on the other side of the bed? Once we got in the habit of changing our habits, we could drink a cup of water instead of a soda, eat one green veggie or fruit every day for a week, or maybe park our car farther from the door so we could walk and burn a few extra calories. We would be amazed how little changes in our daily habits would shift our perspective. Getting out of our routines will force us to see ourselves and our decisions differently. It will bring our wellbeing into the forefront of our minds. I think we are like diamonds with many facets. Just making a small turn shows off a whole new aspect, doesn’t it? Things that we might have thought impossible can become very possible, but probably not all at once. Slow and steady wins the race! We have the tools to help us make positive changes. We have the internet, social media, blogs, tweets, Instagram, and the list goes on. How many of you use the fit bit? Wow. That little data keeping device has created a movement of health conscious people! All you did was wear a thing on your wrist that kept up with your steps and your sleep. Little changes make a profound impact on your life. Start today with a small, productive change. Julie Mills-Watson owner of Body of Health and Life, LLC. More information at bodyofhealthandlife.com.

City Talk: Lilburn’s New Library and City Hall on Schedule to Open Before the End of 2016 By Heidi Campbell June 9th of 2015 was a big day for the city of Lilburn: Gwinnett County and the City of Lilburn broke ground on the new $11.3 million city hall and library. Locals have watched the evolution of this 44,000 square foot building, a centerpiece for the rejuvenation effort in Lilburn, which now has walls and even a clock tower. With construction time estimated to be fourteen months, the building, located at the corner of Main and Church Streets, is slated to open before the New Year. According to Mayor Johnny Crist, the building was designed to look like a traditional courthouse that might have been built in 1910, the year that Lilburn’s city government was organized. “This is the first time that a city and county building will be built together in one facility,” reveals Crist. “Our city hall and the library are taking a wedding vow! City and county employees will now be housed together as one big happy family!” The city hall will occupy the two-story section of the building, and the one-story part will accommodate the new library. The library will be equipped with all of the modern conveniences of the digital age and, as Crist puts it, “There will be computers all over.” The building will boast Wi-Fi throughout – even outside. Plans for the outdoor area include a fenced-off courtyard with trees and benches, and a plaza in the front. “This is really exciting,” explains Crist, “because city halls last at least 150 years. We are getting into a project here that will outlive all of us!” To fund this project, the city of Lilburn only had to come up with $600-$800,000. The remainder was funded by the Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), which is the countywide 1% sales tax approved by voters for special projects. “This is really going to be a game changer for developing our city,” says Crist. “We were able to do this without going into debt, and now we can start attracting investors and national chains. We now have our epicenter in place and we can work our way out.” Crist plans to continue to lead the city of Lilburn along the path of growth and rejuvenation. He welcomes residents and guests to share their interests and use the amenities that Lilburn has to offer. “The park and the trails are the jewels of our downtown. Keep your eye on Lilburn!” More information at: http://www.cityoflilburn.com/

9. Avoid “um,” “you know,” “like,” and other verbal fillers. They are distracting and take away from your message. Verbal fillers like these can also make you look immature and uneducated. 10. Watch for your listener’s non-verbal communication. If he or she begins to look away, seems distracted, can’t answer a question you’ve asked, becomes squirmy, and/or begins to physically move away, your listener has likely lost interest in what you are saying. Q&A with Parkview High School Theatre Teacher and Director Sharon Morrow
Weddings & receptions, holiday parties, anniversary celebrations, sweet 16 parties, corporate events and more!
By Rachael Brice
(770) 972-6540 • www.vecoma1.com
Sharon Morrow is a well-known name around Gwinnett County and Parkview High School. A seasoned, dedicated and inspirational teacher and theatre director, she recently talked with Our Town Magazine about her career as Parkview’s theatre teacher. How long have you been teaching and directing theatre at Parkview? A: I started working at Parkview in Spring 1986 as an English teacher after having moved here from Tennessee. I then moved to Shiloh High School for a few years to teach English and theatre, but returned to Parkview in Spring 1992 as a language arts, drama, music, and theatre arts teacher. After twenty-four years, I still love it and haven’t wanted to leave. www.mypedsortho.com

Why did you first get involved with theatre? A: I have always had a passion and love for the arts. I earned my bachelor’s degree in humanities with a minor in theatre from Christian Brothers College, now Christian Brothers University – the finest engineering school in the state of Tennessee. As an English teacher, sometimes you have to get creative. I figured I had been creative in other job positions I had held, and with a musical background and having had taken piano lessons for thirteen years, I figured theatre fit in with my skill set. So, when a school asked if I could teach English and theatre too, I figured, why not, though after a few years, my job evolved into just teaching and directing theatre. Do you have a favorite play, and why? A: Brigadoon is my favorite musical of all time. I just love the story. With underlying themes like love conquers all, nothing is impossible if you love people, and finding your home – wherever that may be; it just speaks to me. My favorite line in the show says it all, “When you love someone enough, anything is possible, even miracles.” How do you choose which shows the theatre department will perform, especially with such large class sizes? A: We look for shows that can accommodate particularly large ensembles, though it is difficult to do for our non-musical classes since straight plays don’t have a chorus. Besides class size, we also have to determine what shows are available. Our original plan was to perform Ragtime, but right now there is a national tour, so the rights are restricted and it’s currently unavailable. We also look to see if any shows would be topical or trendy, which is another reason we liked Ragtime. It just seemed so “of the moment,” but obviously someone else thought so, too. The composition of our potential cast, the vast array of vocal talent, and finding something that will challenge our actors are also things we consider. This year, we have also been blessed with an abundance of really talented guys, which is not always the case. Continued on page 22

I visited Cuba years ago when a window of opportunity opened in the 1980s. Fidel had taken over in 1959, forcing former President Batista out, so Cuba was closed off to visitors except for that short period in the ‘80s. I was young then, and the place seemed so sad and dilapidated. It is now 2016, and once again I find myself in Cuba – a country where the citizens of the US were not allowed to visit until now. This fall, six US airlines have asked permission to fly to various cities in Cuba. Cruise ships are planning stops, and hotel companies are getting ready to build on the façades of those historic dilapidated buildings. In Havana, where their capitol building was created to mimic our own, tourism is on the rise. Restaurants are opening daily with owners allowed to make a profit on their own. Private enterprise is permitted (with restrictions), and the countryside is awash with tourist groups. The Russians left Cuba in 1989 and everything fell into a worse state of repair than after the Revolution. When the Berlin Wall fell, Cuba collapsed, too. Blackouts were regular, and food and water were scarce. Today with tourism at an ever increasing demand, the Cuban economy is rebounding. Iberostar and Melia have opened large hotels. Locals are also opening guest rooms to tourists for a price. Restaurants and clubs are daily filled to the brim with visitors from across the globe. Not only are these wonderful old buildings blossoming, but museums, botanical gardens, and small cities in the mountains and by the sea are welcoming everyone. Old American cars serve as taxis everywhere. Many buildings are still very empty and in ruin, but all is changing fast. Now is the time to visit Cuba, before it turns into a place just like everywhere else! Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor. More information at pam@walkeradventures.com
Parkview Theatre
Continued from page 20
How is the Parkview theatre department funded? A: Mostly by selling tickets, candy, and flowers for our shows. We also accept donations from community members and sell ads in the programs, which are very targeted to those in our community. We’ve been lucky and blessed that our local businesses and restaurants have been supportive, as well as the Parkview Community School and PTSA, both of which give the theatre department generous gifts. On average, a non-musical can cost the department $2,000 – $3,000 and a musical anywhere from $9,000 – $10,000, so we always hope to come close to breaking even and then hope to make a little money on top of that. And if not, we will host a car wash! Has the Parkview theatre program won any awards since you’ve been directing? A: Our theatre department has won many awards over the past twenty years, and it’s all because of our very talented students. Most notably, Parkview won the region AAAAA Competition One Act in 2005 with The Role of Della, in 2006 with Smoke on the Mountain, in 2008 with The Actor’s Nightmare, and in 2009 with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Parkview earned 2nd place in 2007 with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), in 2014 with Over the River and Through the Woods, and in both 1996 and 2012 with Black Comedy. even opted to enter the show for a Shuler Hensley Award. These awards are similar to Broadway’s Tony awards, but for Georgia high schools. The school was thrilled to not only receive two nominations, but two additional honorable mentions in its first year of consideration. But perhaps Providence’s greatest expansion will be its new high school campus opening in Johns Creek in the fall of 2017. The sister campus will partner closely with the main Lilburn location with students from both campuses participating together in athletics, fine arts, retreats, and more. “We’re proud to be extending our borders,” Daniels said. “It’s exciting that we have the opportunity to not only teach our students in Lilburn and develop and empower them to be next generation leaders, specifically in their faith; but now we have the opportunity to also do so in Johns Creek. We want all of our students, no matter their age, to be well equipped academically, but also spiritually moored for when they grow up and move out on their own.” Amidst all that is transpiring at Providence, this is also a year of transition. This will be Dr. Jim Vaught’s last year as Head of School at Providence where he has served since the school was founded. He is being honored with the title of Headmaster Emeritus. While the school is sad to see him step aside, there is much excitement for Dr. Sean Chapman, current associate head of school, to espouse the role of Head of School on July 1st. Providence is currently accepting applications and enrolling students for the 2016 - 2017 school year. More information at providencechristianacademy.org.

Spring is just around the corner and with it a host of hazardous things for your pet to get into! Here are some tips on keeping pets safe this spring. Plants are springing forth, and unless you know exactly what’s what, keep your dog from eating, chewing, and even digging around plants, mushrooms, etc. Daffodil bulbs, crocus, Lily of K-8th the Valley, GradeHyacinth, ~ Serving Families Since 1986 K-8th Grade ~ Serving Families Since 1986 K-8th Grade – Serving Families Since 1986 Tom Smith Road • Lilburn, GA 30047 791 Tom Smith Road • K-8th Lilburn,Grade GA 30047 Iris, and more are all blooming, and as such pose a threat to your pet. It’s hatchling season, and you may have noticed that baby snakes are out and 770-381-0557 • www.sjnrcs.org about. Snakes are obviously dangerous for your dog or cat, but baby snakes are even more dangerous because they haven’t yet learned to regulate the amount of venom they inject when lashing out to defend themselves, so they typically inject all they have. Yikes! This can be deadly for your pet. If you suspect a snake bite, get your pet to your veterinarian immediately. Take a photo of the snake if possible as this will help your vet determine an anti-venom. Hippity Hoppity. Easter is on its way! And with it comes chocolate, lots of it. We all know that chocolate is dangerous for dogs, but so, too, can the Easter grass in many baskets be dangerous for your cat! It’s irresistible crinkly, crunchy texture attracts cats, but it could cause a blockage in their intestines if swallowed, so keep those Easter baskets up and out of reach of your pets. Notice anything funny about your pets lately? Sneezing, sniffling, itching, scratching, licking, or coughing up yellow foam? Seasonal allergies may be the cause. Even if they haven’t been affected before, there may be something new in the air that is affecting them. Consult with your veterinarian for a diagnosis and advice. Fleas, Ticks, and Heartworms. Oh, My! We’ve had a particularly mild winter, so get ready for bugs. If you haven’t already, now is the time to start your flea, tick, and heartworm prevention treatment. There are many to choose from, so consult with your veterinarian as to what is best for your pet. Fred Angeletti, DMD Terie Hansen, Owner of Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care.
