Our Town Gwinnett

On the Cover: Mellow Mushroom Snellville Advances Plan to Give Back More By Kim Hill The Mellow Mushroom Pizza restaurant on Highway 78 is a staple in the Snellville community. The store has now been at this original location for over twenty years. Owner Barbara (Barbie) Rosselle says her brother bought the store at a time when she was a single mother looking for a fresh start, and asked her to help him open it. She moved her family here from Hialeah, Florida, and the restaurant opened on May 1st, 1999, beginning her first experience as a restaurant manager and server. Barbie says that while it felt strange to change careers after leaving a corporate job as a human resource manager, she found she enjoyed it. When her brother had an opportunity to open another store in Asheville about a year and a half later, he offered to sell Barbie the Snellville location. She acquired a small business loan and purchased the store. Barbie admits it wasn’t easy being a single parent owing a high-interest business debt and working crazy hours running a restaurant. Ownership presented challenges, and Barbie had to build trust with her employees and managers. She maintains it was her brother’s continued support that sustained her through the trials of restaurant ownership. “I am so thankful for him and my family,” she says. Barbie explains she was, and still is, a hands-on owner who works right alongside her staff, wanting to know every aspect of the business that has become her career. She admits there were times she wanted to give up, but never did. “I am in awe of this place,” she says. “It’s been such a journey.” Barbie attributes the growth of her business to her staff – many of whom are long-term employees – and to General Manager Greg Markle, who partners with her to oversee the store’s opera-

tion. She says Greg is constantly looking for the next project, and together they are always seeking ways to improve the business for a better customer service experience. Knowing what she knows today, Barbie says she would do it all again because of the many wonderful relationships she has made with her staff and with the community. “I attribute the success to them,” she says. “It takes an army. I am humble.” Barbie’s business has changed with the times, too, offering online ordering, DoorDash delivery service, and a catering menu. Many renovations have been taking place, like the installation of new stone conveyor ovens and artist rendered wall art in the dining room and vestibule, and more noticeable changes are forthcoming. Barbie has recently partnered with Uber Eats, and looks forward to the catering business expanding with the coming holiday season, having hired a representative to promote their catering menu to community offices and companies. Mellow Mushroom Corporate frequently changes up the menu, and there will probably be new items out around Thanksgiving, but Barbie wants her long-term customers to know they can still order all their old favorites. She also encourages customers to visit the website and sign up for eClub to receive incentives and discounts. “We consider our customers our family because we’ve been here so long,” Barbie says. Her location has hosted a weekly trivia night for nearly nineteen years, and one team has been coming from the beginning. “It’s really neat to be a part of this extended family,” Barbie says. “Through the years Greg and I have been supported by the community, and that’s why my mission now is to give back.” Barbie hosts a lot of fundraising events helping local schools, the food bank, and the police department, as well as many

smaller causes. She recently ran a fundraiser for the youth group at St. Oliver Plunkett Church, and she is currently working with Snellville City Council member Dave Emanuel to support the Gwinnett Co-op in Grayson through the “Give Hunger the Boot!” initiative. The restaurant will host an event on November 19th and will be a drop-off location for the food bank. A donation box will available for canned and non-perishable goods. Barbie enjoys helping groups plan their fundraisers, and the restaurant donates 10% of the day’s total sales, not just those brought in by the fundraising group. “That has generated a lot of monies going to the community,” says Barbie. Her focus now is to increase those numbers and have a fundraiser every month. She hopes more groups will contact her for fundraising assistance. “I help whoever comes to me and chooses to work to make their fundraiser successful.” Barbie stresses that the company has Continued on page 12

One Man’s Opinion @RyanTSauers

As we inch closer to Thanksgiving, I am thankful for family, friends, and community among many other things. This love of family and community is one reason I enjoy publishing two monthly magazines dedicated to these topics. I believe there is much more “good” going on in the world than is ever reported. If you are a regular reader of my column, you may be thinking that I say this a lot. You are right. We all need to remind ourselves of the good that exists – yet is often overlooked – throughout our community, country, and world. Moreover, many of us see our (nearly 2020) world as falling apart and completely divided. The mainstream media reports sensationalism to gain our attention. If that is all I knew, I might think there weren’t any good, loving, reasonable, and caring people left. But, there are more amazing people out there than we can ever do stories on. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are doing great things to serve others and make our world a better place. The people I know desire peace, love, and a better world for their children and grandchildren. The Our Town Gwinnett community is simply a microcosm of all that is happening around the country. We all have our unique opinions, beliefs, and values. As I have said before, UNTIE (coming undone) and UNITE (coming together) are not that different in “word appearance,” but so different in meaning. So, let us celebrate our uniqueness and let it make us stronger. I challenge us all to be thankful in the weeks ahead. We have so much to be proud of in our community. We have super families, great schools, top businesses, wonderful parks, loving churches, giving nonprofits, etc. Again, our diversity and uniqueness are things we must ALWAYS embrace. Remember, we all need encouragement and are eager to hear a kind word. People need to laugh and want to smile. So, let’s all work hard to take a deep breath, relax, and make another person’s day amazing. A community is strengthened one person and one day at a time. Let us each do our part. I wish you and your family a wonderful and blessed November and Thanksgiving. And, as always, thanks for continuing with me on the journey of my town, your town, OUR TOWN!

Pine Lane Horse Farm has been offering riding lessons and equine education for local youth for the past twenty years. Barn manager Brynn Pennington began her riding career here at the tender age of eight, being mentored by the farm’s owner, Kevin Jewell. Brynn graduated from George Walton Academy and went on to earn her Master’s degree in Physical Education. Just one year into teaching, she realized her heart was devoted to the equestrian program. She created an in-depth training program for Pine Lane Farms and was hired to care for fifty horses and to oversee training the riders. Brynn educates local children on the care of horses and riding fundamentals, of course, but her mentoring qualities extend much further into core life skills such as building self-confidence, giving back to the community, and being kind to others. Her students call her Ms. Brynn, and she affectionately refers to them as her “barn rats.” She provides a safe and loving place for these youngsters to learn and develop character. Private lessons are offered at Pine Lane Farms for $40 per session, and Ms. Brynn even offers camp and private lessons when school is not in session for just $80 per day. The camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and campers ride at least twice per day, learn general horse care, and work alongside other students on various tasks to encourage team-building skills. Students are welcome to visit the farm anytime to help with chores or simply socialize with others. Ms. Brynn hosts sleepovers and other group activities outside the barn to create a sense of family with her students. Recently, one of her students, who is also a Loganville High School cheerleader, was participating in a car wash fundraiser. Ms. Brynn brought horses, trucks, and trailers to be Continued on page 15

You Were Made to Bloom: Meet Michele Yarbrough By Traci Sanders I’ve connected with many women from all walks of life in my writing career and entrepreneurial journey. My favorite connections are always with women who uplift, encourage, and support other women. Why? Because it’s such a rare thing to experience, especially in the business world. From a young age, a spirit of competition is fostered in women with phrases such as: “That’s pretty good, for a girl,” or “A woman’s place is in the home,” or “This is a man’s world.” Women compete with other women based on beauty or domestic skills. They compete with men to demonstrate strength, knowledge, or competence. That’s why it’s so refreshing when I discover women like Michele Yarbrough. Rather than competing with other women, she has dedicated a great portion of her life to inspiring and encouraging them. For twenty-one years she ministered to preschool families about parenting principles, based on a variety of tools such as the book Screamfree Parenting, which educates parents on connecting with their children through the power of calm. As a mom of three, ages 24, 21, and 16, and a former preschool ministry director, Michele developed a passion for encouraging and supporting women in all seasons of their lives. In another realm of her career, Michele enjoys working at Epiphany Boutique in Athens. As a Bachelor of Science major in Fashion Merchandising from Eastern Kentucky University, she is Continued on page 20

In Defense of the Modern Teenager

Gwinnett’s premier event destination for 20 years!

By K. Coats It happened again. A group of older people had a complaining session about “young people today” on the internet. The young person didn’t value something the same way that the older person did, so that meant the whole generation was doomed. But that’s the way it’s always been, hasn’t it? We can go pretty far back to find the evidence of the older generation complaining about the younger one: Socrates to be precise. I’d be willing to bet that those same folks complaining on the internet had their fair share of criticisms from their elders as well. So why is it that this tradition rivals baseball as America’s favorite pastime? As a teacher who works exclusively with this age group, I firmly believe it comes down to a couple of major elements. Older folks usually don’t complain about individuals. They complain about the whole generation. So one element is that people often have a preconceived notion about how “the youth” behave. Anyone who acts like this notion confirms that idea, and anyone who doesn’t is the individual exception. People loathe the group but like the individuals. This isn’t limited to this generation, however. We can all recall wholesale labels about young people; and, again, I’d wager that most of us felt those labels were inaccurate at best. The other, larger, reason that today’s youth seems to get a particular amount of ire boils down to one basic fact – the world of our own youth is gone, and this new world of today’s youth is disorienting. It’s frustrating to say the least, and they don’t seem to share that frustration. It’s almost like the people who were accused of witchcraft in the Middle Ages just because they were odd and showed no remorse or discomfort in their oddity. We see these young people with more phone apps than we can name doing more transactions, communication, monitoring, and business than we can imagine, and on more than one level we feel a bit left behind. And in the end, it isn’t really the youth who we are frustrated at; it’s the ever-changing technology. Well, this senior literature teacher has some very good news for the older people out there. I’ve worked with teenagers for going on fourteen years now, and I firmly believe we are in good hands.

Takin’ It to the Streets: StreetWise Georgia By Ron Lambros You have probably seen the building when you were waiting for a slow-moving train on Cedars Road in Lawrenceville. StreetWise is written boldly in red and white above the front door. The lettering is radical and reflects more of a feel of the X-Games than a ministry, but ministry is what StreetWise does and does very, very well. For over thirty-six years, StreetWise Georgia has offered “the necessary physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual tools, to help people stabilize their lives, improve their environment, and move out of a state of dependency, into a state of well-being and self-sufficiency,” said ministry founder and program director, Terry Powell. “We strive to be a one-step resource for families and individuals who are living in poverty.” The ministry began with a mission trip to Haiti. Experiencing the horrendous plight of this impoverished country first-hand, Terry Powell and his wife, Pat, began a puppet and clown ministry, traveling the country, entertaining, and ministering wherever they went. After their return, however, they continued to see the same poverty right here in the United States. That’s when they knew they had to do something. Both soon left successful careers with Fortune 500 companies and went into full-time ministry. Fueled by the unmistakable call of God on their lives, the Powells bought a bus and began ministering in the gang-infested, crime-riddled government housing projects of Atlanta’s inner city. They not only survived for over twenty years, but they thrived and their ministry grew. As more and more of the housing projects were demolished, the Powells moved StreetWise to Gwinnett County, a melting-pot of nationalities and socioeconomic groups. And there it continues today. “Gwinnett County is being watched closely on a national level,” Terry Powell states. “If you throw together a pie chart of Gwinnett’s demographics – age, race, religion, etc. – right now, we are what the rest of the nation will look like in 10-20 years. The county, as a whole, is focused on the issues of homelessness, food insecurity, transportation, and access to healthcare. How we’re solving those problems will be used as a model for the rest of the country.” So, what exactly is StreetWise doing to address these issues, and how can others learn and benefit from their ministries? “As a ministry, we make sure that everyone who comes through our doors hears the Gospel, but more importantly, experiences the love of Christ,” Powell said. “We express to every volunteer that it’s vital to treat everyone, client or peer, with respect and inclusivity. So regardless of race, age, gender identity, or religion, clients and volunteers alike will experience God’s love for them by loving like Christ.” In response to the question about what sets StreetWise apart, Powell said, “We’re unique in the fact that we are privately funded, allowing us to assist anyone without restriction or government red-tape. We offer our clients more than emergency/immediate assistance. We listen to their story and determine which of our programs or ministries will provide the greatest long-term solution for their given situation. If specialized attention is needed, we refer them to an organization that focuses Continued on page 20

Travel Tales: The Amazon is Burning By Pam Walker As you read this, I will be back from my visit to the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador. I have been invited to go there to see the pressing need to protect the “lungs of the world.” The infamous rainforest covers huge swaths of land throughout South America, including much of Ecuador, a third of northern Brazil, and parts of Colombia, Peru, Guyana, Venezuela, and Bolivia. It is the largest rainforest on earth and is dominated by the Amazon River and thousands of smaller rivers, all lined with villages and small towns. Especially in Ecuador, the Amazon Rainforest is home to an amazing variety of biodiversity: fish, reptiles, 300 species of mammals (monkeys and jaguars), and thousands of plants and trees. In one acre alone, there are more than 70,000 insect species. Feeding on those insects are the estimated 1,600 species of birds, more than double the number that we have here in the continental USA. Just this year alone with the “cut and burn” practices used, a good portion of the rainforest is burning out of control. If the rainforest is lost and can’t be restored, the area will become a savanna, which doesn’t store as much carbon, resulting in a reduction of the planet’s “lung capacity.” We will all suffer as a result of its loss – the loss of plants, trees, mammals, birds, and yes, insects. We must help curtail this great tragedy and loss. Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor. More information at pam@walkeradventures.com

Fun on the Farm Continued from page 10 cleaned by the cheerleaders to support them in their mission. One of Ms. Brynn’s younger students, ten-year-old Mariella, who has been attending Pine Lane Farms for the past seven months, described Ms. Brynn as “friendly, appreciative, and loving.” Her favorite thing to do is hang out at the barn with Ms. Brynn and her friends. Mariella’s mother, Shannon, said her daughter suffered a devastating blow to her confidence and joy of riding last year when her own horse died unexpectedly. Shannon began to worry that she’d never see the light in her little girl’s eyes again. They decided to try out Pine Lane Farms and felt right at home from the first lesson. Ms. Brynn took Mariella under her wing and helped her rediscover her love of riding. In this day and age when kids are addicted to screens and technology, it’s comforting to know there is a place they can go to connect with peers and have real conversations, receive unconditional love and gentle guidance, and experience a sense of belonging that contributes to something bigger than them. Brynn Pennington is definitely deserving of a spotlight for providing this safe haven for our local youth. More information at https://www.facebook.com/pinelanefarm/.

What entices high school students to beg their teachers to let them stay after school each day and Fridays until very late, work in a cold Briscoe Field hangar on Saturdays, and spend hours of Christmas break in a basement using the wood shop? According to Brookwood High School Assistant Principal Joe Cox, and teachers Dan Miller, Jorge Diaz, and Charles Thornton, such dedication comes from being members of the Brookwood Science Olympiad team. The students have been rewarded for their efforts, winning state championships eleven out of the last twelve years. Science Olympiad (SO) is a scholastic competition where teams of fifteen students compete in twenty-three events that cover all the major fields of science and engineering. Some of the events are lab-based where students will work on a chemistry project in the hosting college’s laboratory; others are engineering based where students will build something like a bridge to bring to the competition to be evaluated for structural efficiency. An event called Disease Detectives has students trace an outbreak of a disease back to its original source using the same statistical methods as scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would do. “It really gives kids an interesting perspective into many different fields of science,” says Cox. The Brookwood team met the third week of school to begin preparation for the first competition in October. Invitational events take place until February when regional events are held. State tournaments are usually at the end of March, with the top two teams in the state going on to the national tournament in May. Brookwood hosts the Brookwood Invitational in January. Sponsored by 3M, the event is the largest high school Science Olympiad in the state of Georgia, averaging about a thousand competitors. Additionally, they host the Gwinnett County elementary school regional tournament, which is a great service opportunity for the students because they write and run the events. The program has increased the number of students passing AP exams, and Diaz says many students credit the program with their preparation for college. Two national gold medal winners won a $2,500 scholarship from Lockheed Martin. One of the winners went to Georgia Tech, earning a degree in nuclear engineering. He wrote a letter to the coaches saying that Science Olympiad was probably the most important part of the science preparation he received at Brookwood High School. Cox says, “It allows these kids a competitive outlet; it allows them to be part of a team. When you’re in a competition with twenty-three different events, everyone has to pull his or her weight, or you don’t get to the next level.” Continued on page 22

Celebrating Santa All Year Long By Kristen Eleveld When you think of Santa Claus, you think of Christmas. It’s impossible to have one without the other, right? Unless, of course, you’re Santa Rick – then you can celebrate as Santa Claus all year long. Fifty years ago, at the age of sixteen, Santa Rick decided to try his hand at becoming Santa Claus, just for a season. At the time, this was an anomaly, as most people who donned the infamous red suit were men in their sixties or older. But Santa Rick discovered that being Santa wasn’t just something he wanted to pretend to be – he wanted it to become his way of life. “You really become a different person when you become Santa,” said Rick, who takes his Santa Claus responsibilities very seriously. “It’s not just about wearing the red suit – you have to become the person.” Santa Rick has appeared as Santa Claus throughout the years in a myriad of venues and locations. He has his hair cut and styled once a month, with each appointment taking half a day to ensure his white locks remain pristine. When he is appearing as Santa Claus, he takes care not to eat garlic or onions to create a more fragrant experience for anyone he speaks with. He doesn’t even eat spaghetti, noting that the sauce can turn your beard red! “A lot of Santas have more hair care products than their wives!” Santa Rick said as he described how he maintained his Santa persona. “I have a ton of products to keep my hair and beard looking their best.” It takes commitment to be Santa Claus – which makes sense, because Santa Rick plays Santa Claus all year long. He is the official Santa for the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons, appearing with them at both public and private events as needed. He also makes regular appearances in a multitude of locations, spanning not only the nation, but the world. From Turkey to China and back again, Santa Rick has quickly gained the reputation of being the best in the business. Santa Rick loves being Santa so much that he started a school for others who wanted to the learn the art of portraying Santa Claus. His school, Northern Lights Santa Academy, is the second-largest Santa school in the country and boasts one of the top programs of its kind. Santa Rick believes that Continued on page 22

By Terie Hansen GEO or Good Enough Obedience is what many owners experience with their dogs. Does this sound familiar? You put your dog in a down and he or she stays there for a few minutes, maybe longer. Then your pet begins to scratch, stretch, sniff, reach for a toy, etc. You don’t do anything because technically he or she is still in the down. Then your dog begins to creep ever so slightly but still you are okay with that because your pet hasn’t gotten up. Now we are in the GEO zone. If you’re happy with that, okay. But remember this: the small stuff matters! What you don’t disagree with, you are agreeing with. And if you are agreeing with less than true obedience, you’ll get more of the same. If you want true obedience, the devil is in the details. When you teach your dog to sit, teach him or her that sit means sit – not sliding into a down. When you teach your dog to come, it should be a beeline TO you, not past you. When you teach your pet the place command, it means ALL body parts need to be on place, not half on half off, or even a paw off the edge. Be specific, expect more, and be consistent, with no negotiation, no gray areas. Correct for even the smallest infractions. When you have true obedience, you can count on your dog to listen to you no matter what is going on around him or her. So, you and your dog can enjoy more freedoms. So, you can take your dog to more places. So, you can travel with your pet. So, you can walk your dog without your arm being pulled off or with your dog choking him or herself. So, you can go hiking together without worrying about your dog attacking another dog. Your pet’s world becomes infinitely larger and more interesting, and you can gain a true companion. Terie Hansen is the Owner of Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care. More information at www.gooddogcoaching.com .

thrilled to be using her credentials to help others again, now that her children are older. Michele sees it as retail ministry and is provided with many opportunities to speak to women and encourage them through her position at Epiphany. Michele is also the founder of www.youweremadetobloom.com and creator of Bloom Boxes – beautifully designed boxes filled with encouraging notes, journals, candles, keychains, and more – all made by women in business and intended to lift the spirits of those who receive them. Bloom Boxes are primarily available in two varieties: one for women in general, and one for teens or college students. The specific contents of these boxes are listed on the website. Customized boxes for church events or other organizational events can be ordered by emailing Michele. Bloom Boxes are shipped all over the United States and are not subscription boxes. Michele’s philosophy is that every woman deserves to be celebrated anytime, not just on special occasions. Bloom Boxes are meant to make women feel loved, supported, and encouraged, giving them a sense that they are not alone in their struggles. Michele takes this a step further by allowing visitors of her website to nominate deserving women in their communities to obtain a Bloom Box for free. Michele chooses one winner per month. These nominations are often theme-based. This month’s theme is all about supporting wives of policemen and firemen. What an example of not only God’s love, but love and appreciation between women! Michele’s prayer is that every woman lives her life in full BLOOM! I’m sure women all over the country would attest that Michele Yarbrough deserves her very own Bloom Box. When a client arrives at their facility, they’re assigned a trained “Navigator” who discusses their immediate needs, discovers what programs they may qualify for, and then creates a plan for them to return to a state of independence. If their immediate need is food, they’re provided with enough to stock their entire kitchen for 2-4 weeks, depending on the size of their household. If it’s clothing, they’re assigned a “personal shopper” who will help them shop free-of-charge in the ministry’s vast clothing room. In Defense of the Modern Teenager Continued from page 11 Here’s why. Today’s young people, as a whole, are brilliant in ways I didn’t think their age group was capable of achieving. I have seen more teenagers developing their own businesses, taking leadership roles, and participating in community events than ever before. They are almost always multi-tasking. And while that has its own detractions, of course, the idea that they are absorbed in their phones wasting Let our team of real estate time is inaccurate. Celebrating Santa All Year Long Continued from page 17

while anyone can look like Santa Claus from far away, the best Santas are the ones that take that extra step to make each moment memorable. That’s why he believes in consulting with experts when it comes to creating content for the classes at his school. For Rick, the only way to be Santa Claus is to learn the persona inside and out, right down to what a reindeer loves to eat and the ability to answer questions about Santa magic. “I have held babies who were a few hours old, and spoken with people who were over a hundred,” said Santa Rick. “All of those people have a story to share with Santa Claus, and I have to be ready to laugh, cry, or just hug a person when they need it most.” Santa Rick maintains the philosophy that it is the job of every Santa Claus to give people the hope they need – and the memories to go with it. Of course, Santa can’t work alone, and Santa Rick has a lot of help from the elves on his team, who go the extra mile to coordinate visits, arrange appearances, and spread the joy of Santa Claus to people and places around the world. If you’re searching for a Santa Claus who can help at your next event, or just want to know more about the magic behind the red suit, Santa Rick can help! He and the other Santas he represents are ready and waiting to help any time. “It’s not just about acting like Santa Claus, or wearing the right clothes or having the right beard,” said Santa Rick. “The best Santas will give people memories to last a life time.” More information at www.SantaRick.com.

Cox coached Science Olympiad previously at Meadowcreek High School and took that team to the national tournament in 2003 and 2005. He presented a challenge then that the first team to win a state championship and earn six gold medals could shave his head. That challenge was finally met in 2015 at Brookwood. “Every year we tell the kids we need to do better than the year before,” says Diaz, “but then at a certain point it’s ‘how much better can we do?’” Last year Diaz continued the tradition and the students asked if they could also shave his beard. “I said sure they could shave my head, shave my beard, whatever, because I knew they weren’t going to go past six medals.” Diaz lost out because not only did the team earn seven gold medals, they had 18 medals overall, and earned an award in every single event, reaching their best score ever. “They continue to surprise us,” he says. Cox, who now works with the team in an advisory capacity, explains there are usually ten staff members coaching, as well as many retirees who come back year after year to help. He is also very proud that a large number of alumni continue to be involved. A 2007 graduate who is now an electrical engineer for Delta spent two consecutive Sundays teaching students how to build a circuit for a device they were working on. Miller says he could have come in and done the circuit for them in half an hour, but he knows that as a competitor, having somebody else do the work for you is worthless. “You have to know how it’s built so you can troubleshoot, so if you break it you can fix it.” A perfect example of this was when one young lady competed in a rubber band helicopter event. She had built her model to exact specifications, and heard throughout the day the flight time to beat was a minute, 20 seconds. She knew that she could put up a minute, 50 second flight. Sadly, though, the rubber band broke and trashed her helicopter. She had a backup helicopter, but something catastrophic happened with it also, and she was left with only parts. She had six minutes to get off a successful flight. With tears streaming down her face, she started grabbing parts and put something together, putting up a flight of about 50 seconds, which was good enough for 6th place in the tournament. Miller points out if she had not gotten a flight off, she would have finished 25th, probably putting a state championship out of reach. Cox says the time she spent working on her device made the difference. “She owned that event and that’s what enabled her to pull off that comeback.” Thornton, who came to Brookwood three years ago from Berkmar where he was Teacher of the Year, will take over as head coach next year when Diaz retires. He admits there is a lot of pressure to uphold the established standards, but he has had fantastic guidance on how to get to those expectations. Cox remembers the first year: “We pushed those kids hard because we could see what they were capable of.” Miller says Cox instilled the belief in them that winning was possible. The standard was set, and they have been meeting and exceeding it every year since. More information at https://www.brookwoodhighschool.net/

StreetWise Georgia Continued from page 20 clothing for school formals, proms, and graduations. Whatever the need, StreetWise has a positive approach to problem-solving. With all the success stories this incredible ministry can tell, there still remains a great challenge: funding. Even with the assistance of corporate partners and sponsors, the need is real. “The biggest challenge we’re facing right now is gaining monthly funding commitments in an ever-changing society,” Powell explained. “Millennials and Gen Z now make up the majority of the nation’s workforce, and to gain their [financial] support, we have to adapt to their language and platform. We’re blessed to have staff and volunteers focused on facing that challenge every day.” We pray that this ministry continues to succeed in all its endeavors, and that funding comes. Thousands depend on its continued success and programs. More information at https://www.streetwisegeorgia.org
