Do you feel like you are doing everything right but still not losing weight or feeling well? Read Connie’s Story Connie

I was one of those people who thought I took excellent care of my health. I did so many things right and yet over the course of the last 4 or 5 years, developed many symptoms and did not feel well in general. My symptoms included general fatigue, lack of energy, migraines, itchy skin, stomach disorders, tingling of my skin from the inside, irritated eyes, foggy brain, etc. At one point my ankles and legs began to swell and that’s when, at the advice of a friend, I made an appointment with Dr. Gravante. I am completely amazed at the transformation in my health! By the end of my first month of care, I would say 80% of my symptoms were gone! All with food and supplements! When given the proper nutrition, our bodies have the miraculous ability to heal themselves. With all that I did right in the past, I was “so close and yet so far”. I had played around with so many healthy practices and eating habits, but I needed a functional medicine doctor to look at my particular symptoms and say “here is exactly what you need to do”. I loved Dr. Gravante immediately: she is kind and compassionate and unquestionably has a passion for figuring out what is going on with each patient. I have referred many people to Dr. Gravante and will continue to do so. I personally think everyone should become her patient! I continue to feel better, have more energy and am so thankful to not feel tired throughout the day. I feel healthy again for the first time in several years. Also, my primary care physician has carefully reviewed my records and protocol from Dr. Gravante and is 100% supportive of all recommendations. Life is too short and too precious to not enjoy quality of life!

On the Cover: Graft Owners are Inspired by Relations made with Local Farmers and Patrons By Heidi Campbell “What if we call it graft?” Seth Clemence asked his wife Ashley five years ago as they finalized the plans to open their downtown Grayson restaurant. Ashley loved the name immediately, knowing that the term resonated with wine. Grafting, after all, is a process that vintners have used with their vines for centuries. After close to a year of renovating the 1888 Grayson House, the couple opened their local, truly farm to table restaurant on August 8, 2012. The restaurant opening was Ashley’s dream. Armed with a degree from UGA and restaurant management experiences in Houston and Atlanta, she moved back to Decatur to pursue her dream of restaurant ownership. Seth, a Rhode Island native who was raised in Wyoming, worked in graphic design, photography, and construction management in Texas and Florida before moving to Atlanta to be closer to his mother. When he met Ashley, he knew his traveling days were over; he was ready to lay down some proverbial roots. “She and I talked often about opening a restaurant,” Seth recalls with a smile, “and she warned, ‘You really don’t want to do this. It’s a lot of work.’ I knew, though, that I would follow her anywhere. I proposed six years ago, and now we welcome our first baby boy into the world with us.” The decision to open in Grayson came along after a Decatur property fell through. The couple heard that the “old Grayson House” was for sale, so, along with close interior designer friends, they visited the property and fell in love. After signing the papers, the couple began the massive renovation. They took down all the walls, stripped the wood, added a second restroom, and, in their trademark “repurpose” fashion, they built the bar and all the tables from wood taken out in demolition. “It ended up just like we hoped,” reveals Seth. “We are excited to bring a Decatur feel out to the suburbs. A lot of folks commute to the city and back, so they don’t really want to drive back out to the city for dinner.” The restaurant is unique for its historic walls; its menu, which changes every six weeks; its exclusive use of twelve to fifteen local farmers; and the owners’ unwavering adherence to the importance of sustainability. “We don’t like to waste anything,” explains Seth. “We offer daily features capturing the essence of the entire vegetable or animal as we utilize all that we are given in order to be good stewards of this land.” While the menus do change, there are a few “fan favorites” that never go away. One such

staple includes the graft burger, which is topped with pimento cheese and jalapeños and made with grass-fed beef from Verner farms out of Rutledge. Their chorizo tacos are another fixed option, made in-house, with tangy slaw, cilantro, sour cream, and fresh jalapeños. Ashley, who makes all the menu decisions, along with Robert, their Chef De Cuisine, ensures a variety of options for diabetic, vegetarian, pescatarian, and vegan diets. The menu showcases creativity, right down to the Darby Farms’ hog, Ashley and Seth Clemence chicken, lamb, and duck features. They use only fresh fish, and Ashley explains, “We source every week from several harbors of freshly caught whole fish, and it is delivered straight to our doorstep.” The large, welcoming, wooden bar, nestled between the kitchen and the original 1888 granite chimney, features six taps, and a unique selection of IPAs, including local, East Coast favorites like Creature Comforts, as well as popular West Coast brews like Green Flash. Themed events add excitement to weekdays. On Whisky Wednesdays, for example, patrons can order half priced whisky drinks – an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan, or a Horse’s Neck, to name a few. On the first Tuesday of the month, they offer a themed wine and food pairing night. For $20.00, guests enjoy three to four different wines, all paired with unique tapas appetizers. Seth says, “Ashley does an amazing job of pairing wines with foods to bring out the nuances found in the wines. She has educated herself by reading, tasting, and traveling to California and Europe to study grapes! She has an amazing palate for wines.” Three words are listed below “graft” in the restaurant name: food, wine, and community. While all three are important to them, they feel most inspired by the last: community. Seth is a current member of the downtown development board of Grayson. They support local school teachers by donating drop-off lunches and supporting local programs. Most recently, Continued on page 21

Our Town

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers

@RyanSauers

I notice that most people are very much the same. We all eat and drink. We all must sleep. We all seek to be loved. And, we all have different emotions. It is what makes us human. With that said, I want to focus on something that can make a difference in our lives. I was exposed to a great book by Laurie Beth Jones entitled, Jesus, Entrepreneur. I want to focus on one idea from the book, SHALT, and elaborate on how it can help us. SHALT is an acronym for Sad, Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. How many times have you said something or written something you later regretted? How often have you acted in an abnormal manner and wished you could get a “do over”? If you are sad, it is best to postpone making a decision until you are in the right frame of mind. You will be glad you did. Second, many of us get grumpy when we are hungry. So, if you have not eaten, wait until you are no longer hungry and you will think more clearly. How about when we are angry? In the world of social media, it is easy to fire off a tweet, post, text, or e-mail in seconds. You know the drill – when someone makes you mad, blast them right then for the whole world to see. Of course, this is not the best thing to do. Like sadness, anger is an emotion that will settle itself in time. And you should wait until that emotion is gone so you can calmly respond to what you are facing. In many youth sports there is a 24-hour rule -- after a game, if you are upset with your child’s playing time, etc., you must wait 24 hours before talking to the coach. If you still are angry after that time, then it is okay to begin the conversation. However, in many cases the emotion dies down before 24 hours, and you are glad you did not react on adrenaline. Every time I have reacted in the moment, I later kick myself for getting baited when I knew better and should have waited. Feel free to use this tweetable rhyme: “Don’t get baited when you should have waited.” Simply said, take time to calm yourself to most effectively address the issue. How about when you are lonely? Maybe you have had little time around people in recent weeks or are just bored. This is not a good time to make decisions on important matters because you are out of balance and need to be centered. It is easy to feel everyone else is getting something that you are not. All of these thoughts and many more creep up when we are lonely. What about when we get tired? After all, in our rapidly moving world, we ALL get tired at some point. This is a time you feel great stress and need to rest. So, do not write or say something you will later regret because you’re worn out. It will come across the wrong way. Instead, get some rest and approach everything with a fresh perspective. This is why we say get a good night’s sleep and things will look better in the morning. This is my take on the SHALT rule and how it can help us better understand our emotions – and, in turn, make the Our Town community an even better place. Does this mean you should always wait to communicate or make a decision? No. However, understanding when you are feeling “sad, hungry, angry, lonely, or tired” is important. What about you? What “SHALT” you no longer do? On another note, thanks for all your great feedback on this column. I shalt continually work hard to make it better each month. And, last but not least, and as always…thank you for continuing with me on the journey of my town, your town, OUR TOWN! ancial Aid • Catholic Values • Financial Aid ended Day • Program Community Service • Extended Day Program • Catholic Values • Financial Aid ue Ribbon School of Involvement Excellence• Community • Family • Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Service • Extended Day Program • Family Involvement • Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Hagan Green is a Parkview graduate and former member of the PHS football team. Hagan participated in multiple character development lessons, and was a member of a huddle group led by NG3 director, Javier Muñoz. He is currently working at Breakout Games and will attend Georgia Gwinnett College in the spring. Our Town (OT): What does NG3 mean to you? HG: It means knowing that an adult has my back and can help me grow as a man and spiritually. For example, one time I needed advice about some spiritual things, and he gave me the advice I needed to make the right decision. NG3 helped my character grow. Before NG3, I was not the best leader, but coach taught me to lead by example. I use that technique every day at my job to teach the new people the right way to do things. OT: What is the most memorable moment you had with NG3? HG: One of my favorite moments was when Coach Muñoz took us all down to his basement to read a bedtime story to his kids. That was my favorite moment because it gave us as teenagers an idea of how to act when we have a family of our own. Also, it showed us that we are a part of his family and the door is always open. Coach said that over and over as we would have meetings. Since we had our last official huddle meeting, I have been back to his house on numerous occasions. OT: What would you tell someone who has never heard or experienced NG3? HG: They need to try it! It is an amazing opportunity I couldn’t pass up. You get out of the program what you put in. It will allow you to have a bond with a mentor who is always there for you. Most importantly, taking part in NG3 opened my eyes to what I wanted to do as my career, which is become a social studies teacher and coach football. I want to use football as a tool to mentor teenagers to be the husbands and the men that society, and more importantly, their families need them to be. More information at http://ng3.org/

Skin So Simple: At-Home Skinformation

VOTE…Early Voting October 17th & Election Day November 8th

Elect Jasper Watkins III

By Lisa Clinkscale Porter, Aesthetician Don’t you just love how your skin looks right after a great facial? The key to maintaining healthy skin is to do your part at home in between beauty treatments. The goal is to ensure that each facial progresses your skin to the next step, as opposed to starting over each time. This means that you will need to have the appropriate products at home and to know the steps you need to have a great daily regimen. The actual products needed for your at-home skin care plan should be customized just for you, which means it’s probably time to clean out the bathroom cabinets. Having a bunch of products is one thing, but having the right products for your skin and actually using them a.m. and p.m. can make all the difference. You should have a five step daily plan in order to cleanse, prevent, resurface/treat, hydrate, and protect your skin, twice daily. Cleanser removes dirt, debris, impurities, and make-up from the pores while allowing the skin to be more receptive to the other steps in your regimen. Using a toner or astringent next removes any excess cleanser and brings the skin’s pH balance back to normal right away. This step is referred to as the “prevention” step because it lifts and tightens the skin, therefore slowing down the aging process. The next step is to address the current condition of your skin, which I call the resurface and treat step because it gives the skin clarity. These are the products used to correct/repair your skin. Afterward, a water based moisturizer is applied to provide hydration. Finally, we all need to use a SPF15 sun protection or higher every morning that contains antioxidants and provides UVA/UVB protection. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. How does your skin look? Lisa Clinkscale Porter is owner of Unique Face Options, Inc. Battle of Five Forks: Brookwood and Parkview Pajama Run By Our Town Staff Parkview vs. Brookwood – also known as the Battle of Five Forks – is a rivalry that dates to a time older than any of their respective high school students. Rivals in everything from sports to academics since the 1990s, the schools were even featured on the “Great American Rivalry Series.” As far as competitions go, this battle is in good fun, and the week prior to the big game is spent in friendly competitions within and between the two schools. And this year, to kick off spirit week, NG3 will sponsor its first annual Pajama Run on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. under the lights at the Parkview High School football stadium. Runners will pay an entry fee of only ten dollars to participate in the one-mile run. Families, runners, and students of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Pajamas are not required, but wearing them for the event would be fun. There will be music, food, and entertainment for runners and non-runners alike. William Ney, a Parkview NG3 Board Member and organizer explains, “The number of runners registered will determine the winner of the Five-Forks trophy. And, of course, just like on the football field on Friday, we expect Parkview to be the clear winner.” Brookwood supporter, Melissa Johnston says, “I am looking forward to the creative and fun night hosted by NG3. As a former Brookwood cluster teacher, I appreciate the work of NG3 at BHS. I can’t wait to see some of my students at such a fun event. Go Broncos!” NG3 is a Gwinnett County-based non-profit organization that provides relationally driven, character development, and chaplain services to high school students. The First Annual Pajama Run will be a major fundraiser for the Brookwood and Parkview chapters. “Students coming out to spend time with family, friends, and neighbors are what NG3 supports. It is what makes our community great and the rivalry between the two schools so much fun,” Ney said. You can register to participate prior to the event by visiting ng3.org/parkview and ng3.org/ brookwood. The first 200 registrants receive a free T-shirt. Runners should appreciate that this is an enjoyable, family-centered event and pajamas should reflect this theme. Area businesses that would like to participate as sponsors are invited to call Javier Munoz at (678) 646-4694. More information at www.ng3.org

William and Amy Ney Continued from page 8 painted up Cole Road. It was a warm evening. Neighbors walked to the game. That is when I knew this is where I wanted to live.” William Ney is a 1999 graduate of Emory University School of Law. In 2008, he became the managing partner in a boutique law firm – now Ney Hoffecker Peacock & Hayle – located in Midtown. But owning and operating a law firm doesn’t restrict this family’s involvement in the community. “We moved here for the schools and community,” says William. Amy is the current co-president of Parkview High School PTSA. “To have the opportunity to serve your community is a great honor. Not everyone is afforded the time or ability to work alongside educators and help build a better place to live, work, and play. But, we take that commitment to our community seriously.” The Neys attend Grace Fellowship Church. They believe that a strong faith provides the foundation in their own lives. “We are Jesus followers. We believe that character and relationships are what make a family, a school, and a community successful.” In addition to volunteering at their church, William and Amy serve on the local board for NG3, a nonprofit nondenominational committed to building character in high school athletes. “We think this group is doing amazing things, and it’s something we want to encourage and support.” The Neys are also involved in the schools. William has been the co-president of the Camp Creek PTSA and has coached the Mock Trial team at the high school. Amy has served on the PTSA at Camp Creek, Trickum, and is currently in her third year as an officer at Parkview. Amy has also led fundraising efforts at both Camp Creek and Trickum during the past ten years. The Neys volunteer as much as possible and view that as a reason why their community is great. “We tell our children, give a little or give a lot – but give something. And know that to whom much is given, much is expected,” explains Amy. And much has been given to the Neys. They have been blessed with five children – Savannah, Catalina, Cambria, Michael, and Joseph – all former or current students of Parkview schools. William coached U8 Lacrosse, which both boys play through Mountain Park. Before graduating in 2015 and moving to Kennesaw for college, Savanah ran cross country at Parkview, and Catalina swims for Parkview. Cambria and Michael are involved in the Trickum band program. “When you have five children, you have no choice but to be involved,” says William. “It seems like we are always moving in five different directions and traveling a hundred miles a minute. It is always busy, but never dull.”

Chick-Fil-A-Employee Spotlight: One on One with Lena Latchman and Owner Bryan Shepard By Our Town Staff Bryan Shepard (BS): How long have you worked at CFA? And how have things changed since you began? Lena Latchman (LL): I will become a twenty-five-year employee in March 2017. I have worked under three different Operators. We have improved to higher and higher standards every year. Things have changed only for the better. I have enjoyed my time with Chick-Fil-A more every year. BS: What are your favorite things about working at CFA? LL: I love that we are closed on Sundays. There are so many good things that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one favorite thing.

BS: What makes your job at CFA special to you? Why? LL: CFA feels like my family. From the team members I work with to the guests I serve, it is one big family. I look forward to being with this family every day. BS: What is your favorite CFA memory? Why? LL: Bryan Shepard, my current Operator, threw me a surprise 20th Anniversary as a CFA Employee Party and invited my former Operators, family, friends, and long-time customers. I received a plaque that Dan Cathy signed, and a memory book of my years here. BS: What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of – individually or for the store as whole – while working at CFA? LL: I learned how to better serve people and make people happy. I am from British Guyana and my culture is very blunt. Here in America and working for Chick-fil-A, I learned how to serve people with more compassion. BS: What would you like Our Town Gwinnett Magazine readers to know about you/CFA that they might not know? LL: We see each other as God sees us, and we truly want our guests to feel like they are dining with family when they are in the restaurant. I am a single mom. My husband passed away when my sons were young. I raised two boys. At one point I worked three jobs while raising them. They are now grown, a Georgia Tech grad, and Georgia State grad and I have one granddaughter.

By Kim Hill While serving as an intern at Gwinnett Christian Terrace (GCT), Melody McTier fell in love with the Lilburn senior living community. She now serves as Life Enrichment Director, a title akin to an activities director, but with the goal of offering programs that will not only be an activity for the residents, but will also enrich their whole lives in some way. Impressed by the generosity she found at GCT, Melody decided to build on an idea her mom used with her piano students: collecting food for the Lilburn Co-op. While her mom used practice hours as the incentive, Melody wanted to get the residents engaged outside, and also to get them moving. A paved walkway around the building inspired her to challenge the residents to walk laps for cans. As May is National Older Americans month and this year’s theme was “Blaze a Trail,” it made a perfect title for the campaign. She pitched the idea to the residents on National Donut Day, right after they had eaten their donuts. “I told them here is how you can work off those donuts!” she says. Melody wanted to be sure all residents had the opportunity to participate regardless of age or ability, so she relaxed the rules to include walking the halls, or walking to the grocery store, or exercising on equipment in the Wellness Room. The campaign ran from June 1st until August 2nd. Many residents who did not feel they could walk had the option to contribute food. Approximately 25 walkers collected 875 food items and $389 in cash donations. Two of the top producers were residents Lynda Chambers and Wayne Mitchell, who became big competitors, rivaling each other’s efforts during the 60-day campaign. Wayne says he didn’t think people would keep up with food to equal his laps, but the food collected exceeded his expectations. He often chose to walk at night when it was cooler, enjoying a recently added paved walkway through a nicely wooded area on the property. Lynda laughs and says she saw him out there with his flashlight. She proudly states that she only missed two days, walking the last day in the rain. “I enjoyed asking people to sponsor me,” she says. “I’d say, ‘I’m gonna walk for two months and I want a can of food every day!’” It took a large trash can and a buggy to get all the cans out of her apartment. A survivor of three heart attacks and open heart surgery, Lynda says her doctor was amazed when he recently checked her chart, saying it was the best he had ever seen it. Her cholesterol levels have dropped and she has lost 20 pounds. Wayne says he lost 15 pounds and his blood sugar levels are down, so this has helped him while he helped others. Melody plans resident activities to encompass many different spectrums of life. Programs have included Painting and Piano Classes, Georgia Gwinnett professor lectures, monthly movies, and a partnership with Berkmar Beta Club where students assist with weekly Bingo games, a Halloween Party complete with costume contests, and Christmas decorating. Over the years, the residents have also collected gifts for the police and fire departments, and are currently raising funds for bullet-proof vests for the police dogs. ”There’s something to do here all the time, something going on she’s responsible for,” says Wayne. “She fell right into place and took off with it!” Melody thinks some people were skeptical at first, but says, “I’ve earned their trust, I think.” She says she will probably give the residents a little break before resuming the Blaze a Trail campaign. “Wait until early fall when it cools off,” says Wayne, “then I can really show off!” Gwinnett Christian Terrace is a HUD-subsidized senior living community. Scott and Alicia Mecredy dreamed of opening a music store that truly celebrates music and the impact it has on people’s lives. In August 2011, they fulfilled that dream by founding Music on Main Street in downtown Lilburn. From an early age Scott Mecredy dreamed of being a musician. Fortunately, his mother always encouraged him to pursue his dreams, though she may not have always been excited that the dream revolved around music. Like most parents, she and Scott’s dad wanted something more stable for their children. So, Scott eventually worked in the technological field, but his musical aspirations never really left. As he says, they just got pushed aside for a while. When Scott’s job took him and Alicia across the country, they constantly looked for just the right place to build their dream music store. They found what they were looking for in an old house in need of restoration on Main Street in Lilburn. It was a major undertaking, but they knew in the end it would be worth it. They chose to put their store in a house because Scott wants people to feel like they are home when they enter. Music on Main Street contains seven practice rooms where lessons for every instrument imaginable are taught to students of all kinds. Their students range in age from four to eighty. Upstairs is a recording studio, which also accommodates students of recording and sound engineering. The studio can be rented by bands and individuals to record an album, and monthly open mic nights, called Coffeehouse, are held there for students, parents, and teachers. The studio has hosted some great bands, including Natti Love Joys, Campbell Harrison, Oteil Burbridge (from the Allman Brothers Band), and Donna Hopkins. Summer events abound at Music on Main Street, too. Behind the store is an open air concert stage where bands such as Col. Bruce Hampton, Little Country Giants, Geoff Achison, and Ralph Roddenberry have played. Scott is a board member of The Fare Thee Well Foundation, through which Music on Main Street hosts two summer band camps for children. The stuContinued on page 19

Learning Lessons: How do You “See” Yourself as a Student? By Carol C. Wood Recently I read that the way each of us sees our life shapes our life, and how we define our life determines our destiny. I believe this principle can be applied to students as well. As a professional educator who works with students in reaching their academic goals, I often see that students have not yet attained these goals and therefore seek assistance in what they need to change in order to reap their desired results. If I can assist a student in viewing him or herself in a more positive way, encouraging the student of his or her capability in reaching goals, then positive change can begin to occur. My approach is based on my belief that as a steward of God, it is my responsibility to use the many talents and skills that God has blessed me with. As a demonstration of my appreciation and respect for what God has enabled me to do, it is my responsibility to use my abilities in the best way possible at all times. A beneficial first step is to ask the following question by forming a visual image in his or her mind of what he or she sees as the answer: “When I think of myself in the role of a fulltime student, what image do I see in my mind?” The student’s description of this picture is a true reflection of his or her conscious and unconscious feeling about who he or she is as a student. If that image is not ideal, students can then begin to describe what they believe to be a healthy image of a successful student and then begin to write down what they can do to become the student they envision as successful. Over time, the student will hopefully begin to become that student he or she envisions as successful and responsible. If the image is positive, they have confirmation that they are on the right track to reach both their academic potential and educational goals! This created image determines a student’s expectations, values, relationship with teachers and other students, academic goals, and educational priorities. Carol Wood is Founder/Owner of Total Learning Concepts. More information at: http://www. totallearningconcepts.com/

Kevin Lamb has deep ties to the Our Town community. He is a native of Lilburn where he graduated from Parkview High School and continued his education at Georgia College at Milledgeville. Kevin spent his summers as an intern at Mountain Park First Baptist, working with middle school youth groups. In recent years, he served the Gwinnett community by protecting it as both a firefighter and a paramedic, working at the Gwinnett Fire Department, Station 24, at the Mall of Georgia. Kevin and his wife, Amanda, have two daughters, McKenzey Kate, age six, and Abigail, age three. In following their dreams, Kevin and Amanda purchased several acres of land in Oconee County near Watkinsville. It was here that Kevin spent many hours constructing their new home and acting as his own general contractor during his days off. Late in 2015, however, Kevin felt the urge to work with the youth again. After consulting with Amanda and after much prayer, they decided to be a host home for a youth event for seventh grade boys sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Watkinsville. What began Continued on page 26

Community Event Spotlight: Taste of Tucker By Karen Wood What began as a combined church/community outreach in 2010 has grown in size and importance to the greater Tucker community. Taste of Tucker had a very humble beginning. Art Wood grew up in Tucker, Georgia and always maintained an involved relationship with strong ties to the community. It was a dream of his for many years to introduce a “Taste Of” event in Tucker. So, in 2010 Art and his wife, Karen, along with Tucker Methodist Church, added Taste of Tucker to an existing project called “Music Under the Stars.” The first Taste of Tucker took place on a cold November day and welcomed twelve food vendors, entertainment from local church bands, and a gathering of nearly 400 attendees. Taste of Tucker was originally held on a side street alongside Tucker Methodist Church, but eventually outgrew its location. The event was moved to Main Street proper in 2013. We look forward to celebrating this year’s Taste of Tucker on Saturday, October 22nd from 1 to 6 p.m., once again on Main Street. Attendees can look forward to sampling great food from twenty-five participating restaurant vendors, including many who have been involved in the event for years, some from its inception. Taste of Tucker is a wonderful event for the entire family. In addition to the delicious food offerings, live music will be provided by both Convoy, a classic country/Southern Rock cover band, and 80s cover band Members Only. Tucker Methodist’s Table 153 Casual Worship service will host the always popular Family Fun Zone, where children of all ages can enjoy inflatables, face painting, and more. Vendors involved in the event will participate in the “Best Of” contest. Awards are provided for the Best Decorated Tent, Best Appetizer, Best Entrée, and Best Dessert. Chef T, runner up on Hell’s Kitchen a few seasons ago, will serve as one of our judges along with a few individuals selected from the community. The judges will take a close look at the vendor booth decor and Continued on page 21

Music on Main Street Continued from page 14 dents are divided into bands at the start, practice together all week, and perform in a concert for their parents at the close of camp. The students even do their own art and banners for the stage. One of the draws of historic towns such as Lilburn is the sense of community shop and business owners get by working with each other. Some of the organizations Music on Main Street is proud to partner with are the Lilburn Women’s Club and the Global Purpose Academy, a Title 1 school in Lilburn. Fare Thee Well provided a drum kit for the students and Music on Main Street provides them with lessons. In addition to the music lessons and performance opportunities, Music on Main Street tries to provide the supplies school bands and orchestras need, such as strings and reeds. They also provide instrument repairs, and can special order supplies for professional musicians. One thing Scott wants everyone to know is that they are always looking for more students. No one is ever too old start, and if you have laid your instrument down for a while, you can always pick it back up again. Music on Main Street is located at 113 Main Street NW, Lilburn. Brookwood High Media Specialist: Jan Wilson Inspires Students to Enjoy Reading By Heidi Campbell Jan Wilson, a media specialist at Brookwood High School, was not only recently named the Media Specialist of the Year for Gwinnett County Public Schools, but she also took home the district title for the entire metro Atlanta district. On November 3rd, she will join the winners from Georgia’s nine other districts as they announce the state winner. Wilson, who got both her BS and Master’s degree from Georgia State University, was thrilled to mark her twentieth year with such an honor. “One of my goals,” explains Wilson, “is to break the stereotype of what media specialists are. A lot of people are in a time warp, and still see us as managers of materials. In reality, that is only a small part of what we do!” Perhaps the key to Wilson’s success lies in her continual efforts to inspire kids to read. She goes above and beyond to make the media center a place where students want to visit. Her “Read and Feeds” have become a local favorite with Brookwood readers. When students return books, their name is entered in a raffle where 75 winners get a catered lunch. Her “Open Mic” events, held each semester during three lunch periods, bring nearly 800 kids to the media center to hear poetry, music, and stand- up comedy. She also hosts Team Trivia events, and has had movie release parties for The Hunger Games and Ender’s Game. “I am constantly trying to tie literacy with movies and other cool things going on outside of school,” says Wilson. Jan Wilson is a natural born collaborator who enjoys working with teachers to create meaningful, media-infused lessons for students. One of her most recent projects was called Project READ, which was designed to increase student reading stamina. Through this program, students read a variety of genres and responded with unique finished products including podcasts Continued on page 22

GRAFT Continued from page 5 they catered a back to school breakfast for the teachers at Bay Creek Middle School. Seth and Ashley value the friendships they have formed over the years with the locals. The couple who used to run Dillwood Farms, for example, became life-long friends, even requesting Seth to be a groomsman in their wedding. “Community is everything. We want to ‘graft’ passionate local farmers with fresh food, unique drinks, and friends,” Seth explains. “It is more than making money; it is about fostering friendships and building a community. My wife is inspiring in this way. She is so welcoming and loving.” In the near future, the couple plans to open a new eatery. This new restaurant, which will serve as a central bakery for both establishments, will continue to work exclusively with local farmers. They plan to be open for breakfast and lunch, and possibly dinner on the weekends. Seth says that they will work to create the same sense of family at the new location. “One of our previous employees came back to visit us recently,” says Seth, “and he told me ‘the thing I really loved about graft is that we were such a family… we looked out for each other.’ That is exactly the environment we want as we grow.”

Health Matters: Craniosacral Therapy Provides Powerful Healing This month, one of my new therapists, Calhoun Stallings, and I want to introduce you to an awesome therapy called Craniosacral (CS). While I have taken one level of CS, Calhoun is well-versed and specializes in this treatment. Most practitioners just call it CS. The C – cranio – refers to the cranial vault also known as the skull. The S – sacral – refers to the sacrum, the triangle-shaped bone at the end of the spine. Even though the cranium and sacrum are bones, the focus of CS therapy is the nervous system protected by those bones. If the nervous system isn’t happy, no “body” is happy! Bone doctors, or osteopaths, discovered that the bones of the skull never fully fuse. In between the bones are the sutures where blood supply and nerves have been found in connective tissue. These sutures not only allow for small movement, but use the movement to cue the production of cerebral spinal fluid. The fluid is produced in the cranium and flows through the dural tube – which encases the spinal cord – to the sacrum, and then back up to be reabsorbed and reproduced, which creates a rhythm. To trained hands, this rhythm can be felt anywhere on the body. It is this rhythm and the movement of soft tissues under the CS practitioner’s hands that inform and guide the therapist to treat areas that are limited in flow. When there is limited flow, the nervous system is affected and even brain function can be impaired. The typical things that can cause limited flow and disruption of the rhythm are falls involving the pelvic bone (falling off a horse or down stairs), migraine headaches, concussions, car accidents, surgeries of the spine or brain, or some neurological issues. The news of CS is spreading as pleased moms testify to its benefits for children with autism and sensory processing disorders. Calhoun is one of those pleased moms and a craniosacral practitioner. Her son hardly ever met anyone’s eyes, had a hard time communicating, and was distressed in places with lots of people and noise. Once she started treating him with craniosacral techniques, all of those things subsided. Now, nearly sixteen, he is looking forward to having a girlfriend. Julie Mills-Watson is owner, and Calhoun Stallings is a therapist, at Body of Health and Life, LLC. More information at bodyofhealthandlife.com

Jan Wilson Continued from page 20 and redesigned movie posters. These creative endeavors also inspire her “makerspace” efforts. Makerspace is a movement that inspires kids of all ages to create something new. Wilson says, “I bought a bunch of wooden plank sets, and I host an event where kids can come have creative time. It is fun to watch what they build without any directions!” The Readers’ Rally is also one of Wilson’s passions at Brookwood. The team has seen three county championships since 2012. They also participate in charitable fundraisers. Most recently they sold hot cocoa to raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Wilson believes in teambuilding, and this summer took the group to Atlanta’s “Room Escape,” where they were locked in a room and had one hour to escape. “We escaped with seven seconds to spare,” she shares proudly. Wilson is currently working to “genrefy” the school’s fiction collection. After researching, she polled over 200 of her regulars who nearly unanimously supported the reorganization. These students, in fact, have been coming in to help during their lunch periods. Wilson plans to have a pizza party for these kids, and says, “I’m so excited about this! Once it’s done, the kids who like a particular genre can start hanging out in that section, recommending books to kids with similar interests.” Wilson plans to present the plan at the next county meeting for media specialists. Jan Wilson wants all students to be able to come to the media center and “find their place.” The media center offers project based learning areas, charging stations, soft seating for reading, scanners and equipment for digital products, and computers. Wilson attributes the students as the most inspiring part of her job. She recalls one quiet student who was in her Reading Club all the way through her senior year. In her last year at Brookwood, this student applied and became the co-president. “Last year, we celebrated National Library Week, and this student, responding on our ‘how libraries transform’ board, wrote, ‘It is the one place I feel comfortable and at ease at school.’ That,” explains Wilson, “makes it all worth it.”

With much anticipation, Gwinnett presented its newest park to the community last month when the red ribbon was cut to officially open J.B. Williams Park in Lilburn, not too far from Mountain Park Park. Our Town interviewed Ray Lail, President of the Mountain Park Athletic Association, about the new recreational area. Q: Who is J.B. Williams who this park was named for? J.B. Williams was a farmer who was born in Snellville in 1911. He graduated from high school in Snellville where he was a member of the basketball team along with Lewis Grizzard Sr. Williams moved to the Lilburn area in the 1930s and continued farming until he went to work for GM in the 1950s. Q: Where did this land come from and what is the history behind it? In 1943 Williams purchased the property where J.B. Williams Park now sits and lived in the house that still stands on the site. He and his wife had one son, Bobby Williams. After his retirement in the 1970s, Williams worked with his son who was a developer. Bobby built over 3,000 homes in the Lilburn area and worked alongside his father who would help clear and grade the properties that were being developed. Williams remained living in his home until his death in 2007. Q: What relief does having this additional space mean to the current Mountain Park? When the land was originally acquired, the plan was to build a football field at J.B. Williams Park. However, as the steering committee met concerning the park, and the Mountain Park board discussed this new facility, it became clear that it would be most advantageous to both parks to have the Major league baseball field built at J.B. Williams. This has the effect of having less game activity at J.B. Williams and allows more public access to the other park amenities. Q: What will our readers find at this new park? JB Williams Park has the following amenities for our community to enjoy: 25 acres; Dog park area; Skate complex; Playground; Pavilion; Restrooms; Meadow; Lighted baseball/softball field; .75-mile paved, multi-purpose trail and much more. Q: What do you see as some of the benefits of having more park space being available for our community? The main benefit of J.B. Williams Park to the existing Mountain Park is the baseball field that is located at JB Williams. Before this, the baseball field at Mountain Park was incorporated into the football field. This caused a problem in the fall since the county would convert the baseball field into a football field because football is the main sport at the park in the fall. Unfortunately, this caused our boys’ baseball for ages 15-19 to have to travel to other parks to play baseball. With the opening of J.B. Williams, this is no longer a problem. Q: What other info can you share with our readers in regard to this park or Mountain Park? The county plans to convert the football field at Mountain Park Park to a turf field as to allow both football and lacrosse to have use of the field. Ray Lail is President of Mountain Park Athletic Association. More information at www.plaympaa.com

Meet Kevin Lamb and Family Continued from page 16 as an agreement to house ten boys quickly grew to twenty boys. Kevin felt that God was calling him to work in full-time youth ministry, but he wanted to be certain. He asked his wife to pray for direction, and while Amanda was on a retreat, Kevin continued praying for guidance. Should he change careers and seek a youth ministry appointment? Every line and answer pointed toward yes. And thus, he made the career change. The family sold their house in Oconee County and moved back to Lilburn. Lamb is now serving as the student pastor at Mountain Park Baptist Church. The youth at the church frequently share how much they enjoy Kevin’s leadership, support, guidance, and love. Kevin and Amanda, who teaches special education at Brookwood High School, have placed their destiny in God’s hands, and eagerly look forward to investing in the lives of youths who will be the adults of the future. Kevin sums it up well when he stated, “We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow, so there is an urgency to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.” More information under the leadership team at http://mpfbc.org/who-we-are/staff/
