After an hour of shopping, I was in a hurry to get back home, so I wheeled my cart full of groceries around, searching for the fastest checkout lane. My usual scout of the checkout lane scene is to: • Push my cart slowly by each open checkout lane, observing the line. • If the line has more than two people waiting to unload carts, I skip it. • If the person ahead of me is just unloading the cart, I skip it. • If the checkout person appears too slow or unfriendly, not a chance. • If there is a screaming kid in the cart with an oblivious parent, definitely not a chance. • If the person has a two-inch thick stack of coupons, no way. • If the person is writing a check, forget it. • Select best option based on above criteria. • Proceed cautiously. I completed my assessment and chose a line with a friendly-looking employee and what appeared to be a person loading her paid-for groceries back into her reusable shopping bags. I was wrong. The woman in front of me was just beginning to unload her reusable shopping bags. Great, I thought. My usually fail-proof system failed me. I still had to get home and cook dinner, and it was already after 7:00 pm on a Sunday night. I tried to see over the magazines and gum to find out if the line immediately next to me was quicker. As I did, the woman said loudly, “These bags help me organize my groceries.” I looked back at her. She appeared to be in her thirties. She was wearing her Kroger uniform, as if her shift had just ended before she went shopping. She wore glasses and her hair was cut in a cute bob with bangs. She smiled at me and continued to chatter away. “My mom found these bags online,” she said, cheerily. “They are really great because I organize my groceries while I shop and then after I pay, they put them back in the same bags for TYPES OF SERVICES OFFERED me. On the Cover: Grayson Orthodontics By Rachael Brice If Dr. Cesar Cardenas were to win the lottery today, he believes he would still be working tomorrow because he truly loves what he does – practicing the beautiful combination of art and science that makes up his passion – orthodontics. From an early age, Cardenas knew he had a passion for dentistry. The youngest of six, he grew up in the shadow of his brothers – an oral surgeon, a physician, an accountant, and two engineers. He recalls he enjoyed watching them study, and since both his parents were teachers, receiving a good education was instilled in him throughout his childhood. When he was twenty-two years old, Cardenas, who spoke no English at the time, moved to the United States from Colombia, South America, where he enrolled in an English course at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He then moved to Boston and attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he finished dental school and practiced general dentistry for a year. He later went back and received his Certificate in Orthodontics. Cardenas also holds a Doctorate of Dental Medicine and a Master of Science degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Javeriana University Dental School in Colombia, South America. Dr. Cardenas, who has been practicing dentistry for eleven years, moved back to Georgia and has settled down in Grayson, where almost ten years ago he did something he had always dreamed of doing – opening his own practice. However, he didn’t open just one office, he opened two! One is located in Grayson and one in Dacula, and between the two offices, Dr. Cardenas and his staff of certified orthodontic assistants see

over 200 patients a week! The Grayson campus tends to see more patients, so the staff typically spends three to four days at that location with the other day of the week spent at the Dacula office. “I wanted to be able to provide the quality of care and service I wanted, not only for my patients, who I treat as if they were my own family, but for my family as well,” he said. “It brings me great satisfaction to be able to help improve a person’s life by giving them a beautiful and healthy smile. I strive to give each and every patient I see customized care and the highest quality of orthodontic treatment available.” While 70 percent of his patients are children, Dr. Cardenas treats a large number of adults who didn’t have the opportunity to have braces or couldn’t afford them as a child. Now he is helping them improve their smiles and appearance using different techniques, including metal and clear braces and Invisalign®. Dr. Cardenas, a leading Invisalign provider, even has two women in their 70s who are just finishing their treatment. “It’s never too late to get braces,” he said. “In today’s world, we can always improve our quality of life and gain our confidence back.” The average treatment time in braces is approximately two years, whether starting at eight or nine years old in Phase 1, which is known as early orthodontics, or starting at eleven or twelve years old when all permanent teeth are in place. Dr. Cardenas is proud to have state-of-the-art equipment and promises to always provide excellent care and great service to keep his patients happy, and, of course, smiling. “For me, orthodontics is not work,” Dr. Cardenas said. “I

Dr. Cesar Cardenas love interacting with the families and children we treat and watching the process of crooked smiles turning into straight and beautiful ones. This is my passion. It’s my life. If I won the lottery today, I would still be working, because I don’t think I could do anything else.” Dr. Cardenas and his staff love the Grayson community and the patients they treat. He especially enjoys sponsoring various athletic teams and attending local events. In fact, he is getting ready for the 12th Annual Hot Tamale Chili Cook Off in Grayson on November 5th and then will celebrate the holidays at the Christmas Festival in Dacula on December 3rd. When Dr. Cardenas isn’t attending to his patients, he spends time with Estela, his wife of seventeen years, and their three beautiful children, Camila, Laura, and Santiago, all adopted from Colombia. They all love to play soccer and to travel together, and recently they returned from Cancun and Walt Disney World. More information at http://www.graysonorthodontics.com/main.

OCT Love your lawn, all year long.

One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers

@RyanSauers

I notice that most people are very much the same. We all eat and drink. We all must sleep. We all seek to be loved. And, we all have different emotions. It is what makes us human. With that said, I want to focus on something that can make a difference in our lives. I was exposed to a great book by Laurie Beth Jones entitled, Jesus, Entrepreneur. I want to focus on one idea from the book, SHALT, and elaborate on how it can help us. SHALT is an acronym for Sad, Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. How many times have you said something or written something you later regretted? How often have you acted in an abnormal manner and wished you could get a “do over”? If you are sad, it is best to postpone making a decision until you are in the right frame of mind. You will be glad you did. Second, many of us get grumpy when we are hungry. So, if you have not eaten, wait until you are no longer hungry and you will think more clearly. How about when we are angry? In the world of social media, it is easy to fire off a tweet, post, text, or e-mail in seconds. You know the drill – when someone makes you mad, blast them right then for the whole world to see. Of course, this is not the best thing to do. Like sadness, anger is an emotion that will settle itself in time. And you should wait until that emotion is gone so you can calmly respond to what you are facing. In many youth sports there is a 24-hour rule -- after a game, if you are upset with your child’s playing time, etc., you must wait 24 hours before talking to the coach. If you still are angry after that time, then it is okay to begin the conversation. However, in many cases the emotion dies down before 24 hours, and you are glad you did not react on adrenaline. Every time I have reacted in the moment, I later kick myself for getting baited when I knew better and should have waited. Feel free to use this tweetable rhyme: “Don’t get baited when you should have waited.” Simply said, take time to calm yourself to most effectively address the issue. How about when you are lonely? Maybe you have had little time around people in recent weeks or are just bored. This is not a good time to make decisions on important matters because you are out of balance and need to be centered. It is easy to feel everyone else is getting something that you are not. All of these thoughts and many more creep up when we are lonely. What about when we get tired? After all, in our rapidly moving world, we ALL get tired at some point. This is a time you feel great stress and need to rest. So, do not write or say something you will later regret because you’re worn out. It will come across the wrong way. Instead, get some rest and approach everything with a fresh perspective. This is why we say get a good night’s sleep and things will look better in the morning. This is my take on the SHALT rule and how it can help us better understand our emotions – and, in turn, make the Our Town community an even better place. Does this mean you should always wait to communicate or make a decision? No. However, understanding when you are feeling “sad, hungry, angry, lonely, or tired” is important. What about you? What “SHALT” you no longer do? On another note, thanks for all your great feedback on this column. I shalt continually work hard to make it better each month. And, last but not least, and as always…thank you for continuing with me on the journey of my town, your town, OUR TOWN!

Getting to Know: Shepherd’s Staff of Loganville

HELPING YOU LIVE BETTER

By Michelle Watson The Shepherd’s Staff Ministries, Inc. is a 501(c)3 ministry that serves the residents of the 30052 zip code, from either side of the county line, in Loganville. The ministry was founded in 2000, and Megan Herndon became the executive director in 2011. Herndon is joined by one other staff member, Barbara Brown, who serves as the receptionist to the education center, which houses the ministry’s Bible studies, counseling office, and GED preparation and testing. Shepherd’s Staff has 35 regular volunteers and hundreds of seasonal volunteers. Their board consists of 14 members, many of whom have served since the ministry’s inception. Some of the services offered are financial assistance, vision care, mental health, and food assistance. The food bank is not to be the sole supplier of groceries, so those who attend may only do so once every two weeks. And in keeping with the Shepherd’s Staff vision, families and individuals who receive financial assistance must attend budgeting classes. This helps to ensure clients become self-sufficient instead of becoming dependent on assistance. Herndon says that her desire is to work herself out of a job by lifting people up to provide for themselves. Clients may receive help and guidance for as little as three months or as much as a year, depending on their circumstances. In the winter Shepherd’s Staff gives out holiday baskets filled with enough food for three to five days, including a turkey. They have a coat drive so that adults and children can be warm during the coldest months. They even participate in Hunters Against Hunger, an organization that allows hunters to donate part of their game. Shepherd’s Staff has given food to over 17,000 people. They expect to serve 1,700 people just during the eight service days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their GED program, which is an extended campus of Athens Technical College, has quadrupled in students since they started, and they hope to start night classes. Counseling is provided through Loganville Community Ministry Village, which allows for an onsite intern during the school year. 5334_Dr. Chris's October Ad.pdf 1 9/14/2016 6:06:19 PM Continued on page 22

Fitness Foundations: What is the Best Workout?

VOTE…Early Voting October 17th & Election Day November 8th

Elect Jasper Watkins III

By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT I am constantly being asked about which class I think is best between Spinning, Pilates, Zumba, or weights. I usually answer, “I love them all!” I like to encourage my clients and members to try different kinds of physical activity on a regular basis. I believe that the more you change what you do physically (muscle confusion), the better your body responds. I know that starting a new gym activity can be intimidating: new instructor, new moves, and the most frightening thought, “What if I can’t keep up?” Don’t worry. Everyone has the same hesitations. When trying a class for the first time, you should try to arrive five to ten minutes before and introduce yourself to the instructor. Explain that you are new, ask for his or her assistance, and don’t forget to inform the instructor of any limitations you might have such as injuries. A good instructor will help you set up any equipment needed and offer beginner modifications throughout the class. You might get some personal assistance even in a group setting. Most importantly, work at your own pace. If you feel you’re pushing yourself too much, lower your arms, march in place, or grab some water. Take a minute to slow down and reset your pace. Remember that it is normal to feel some muscle soreness the next day. This is just your body responding to the new activity. It doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. The hardest classes are always the first few ones. But by the third class, you will probably be getting the hang of it and things will only get easier from there. Stay fit and healthy. And, I can’t answer my phone if you call me tomorrow because my dad has a doctor’s appointment.” “OK. Bye, dear,” said the cashier. I unloaded the contents of my cart onto the conveyor, and it was now my turn to check out. As I approached the register, I saw the checkout woman’s nametag. She was the front-end manager of the store. She smiled at me and said, “How are you tonight?” “I’m good, thanks,” I said, smiling at her. Leadership Insights: Genuine Leadership in Youth Sports

We are the first in the country to create a Ninja Kids Team League. Call us or visit http://xoleague.siplay.com/site/ to find out more.

By Sean Moynihan, Commercial Tenant Advisor & Youth Soccer Coach What is genuine leadership? Thirty-five years ago the soccer gods interceded in the life of a ten-year-old boy and thus the lives of thousands of other soccer players from all over the world were impacted by his weekly experience of true leadership. The ten-year-old boy was the son of a single working mom who made many sacrifices so that the boy could participate in a game he loved. When the boy and his mother moved to the other side of town, a soccer career that would span high school state championships, NCAA Division 1 soccer, a professional contract, and twenty plus years coaching the game, all almost ended before it began. Simon Sinek, in his book Leaders Eat Last, states that, “the one willing to sacrifice time and energy so that others may gain – is a prerequisite for leadership.” Genuine leadership is being responsible and helping the members of your group reach their full potential. We typically think of leaders with titles like Chief Executive Officer, president, or captain. Genuine leaders don’t need titles or arm bands. Genuine leaders, like Char and Jerry Saunders, drove across town two to three days a week to get that ten-year-old to practice and games. The “sacrifice” they made so that child could be a part of a team is why I can remember them so vividly today. Every leader has a legacy, a commitment to leave their group better than it was, but more importantly a responsibility to teach the lessons that the members of the group will take with them for the rest of their lives. One lesson will be the ten-year-old boy who grows up to spend his life in the game trying to emulate their example of genuine leadership, the act of caring for someone else. Over this past Labor Day weekend, a team of players who speak, Russian, German, Spanish, and English played a tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina. Four youths from that team were in need of a ride. The parents who drove those players are the genuine leaders in youth sports. Thirty years from now, those young people will probably not remember the name of the coach, but they will remember that demonstration of genuine leadership from those who drove them. Thank you to those parents, and thank you Char and Jerry for your willingness to help someone else’s child play a game, and for being examples of genuine leadership. What kind of leader are you? How will you lead at work, at school, at home? When you are in doubt of your leadership ability, just start with caring for another person. Or as John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Go be a leader! Being the county seat of the second most populous county in the entire state of Georgia makes for some pretty big shoes to fill, but the City of Lawrenceville does it well. From “small town feel” community events to higher education, the Crepe Myrtle City has a lot to offer its residents. The Lawrenceville Lawn, which opened in 2014, has become quite the epicenter of activity. The space provides the city with the ability to host more events, as well as accommodate third party events like 5k runs. According to Marci Gross, the director of Lawrenceville’s Marketing and Public Relations, the current lawn and playground area are actually phase one of three that will be completed over the next several years. The city has big plans for the surrounding area that includes both residential and retail space. The annual fall festival, Rock’n Ribville, consistently a huge success, is the largest event hosted on the Lawrenceville Lawn. With more than 14,000 barbeque enthusiasts visiting throughout the day, over 40 barbecue competition teams from across the southeast United States, and over 100 arts, crafts, and food vendors, this is one event you shouldn’t miss! But this festival is about more than just barbeque because it benefits the Lawrenceville Police Benevolent Fund. Our four-legged friends also feel the love at Paws in the Park, which benefits the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation. Other events this fall and winter include Spooktacular on the Square, where costumed kids and kids-at-heart converge on the Downtown Square for a good time of trick or treating with the local merchants. Our Town: How does someone become a Political Analyst? BC: Politics have been an interest/hobby of mine since childhood. I grew up in a newspaper family, worked for a number of media outlets, and, in the mid-80s, found my way back home to Atlanta and serving as press secretary for Georgia’s then Secretary of State Max Cleland. I worked again with Max when he was later US Senator, and we are still close. But from that job I worked in a media relations or communications capacity for Governor, and later US Senator, Zell Miller, longtime Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Mike Bowers, and US Senator Paul Coverdell. In between and after, I supported or consulted with dozens of office holders and candidates, from members of Congress to Georgia sheriffs, mayors, and county commissioners. When US Senator Coverdell had what at first appeared to be a stroke in July of 2000, and what turned out to be a fatal brain hemorrhage, I was asked by friends at 11Alive News to participate in a retrospective of his public life and over a period of days and weeks to provide additional commentary. That evolved into a weekly Sunday morning segment that continued for more than eleven years and my becoming the primary political analyst for WXIA, Atlanta’s NBC affiliate. In 2006, WSB Radio came calling, and soon after that a weekly column, initially carried by The Champion, DeKalb county’s legal organ (now lightly syndicated); in 2009 Georgia Trend; and finally during the 2012 election cycle, Action News and WSB-TV came calling. I am now the senior political analyst for WSB-AM/FM and WSB-TV. Our Town: Why does this Election year seem to feel so different from so many others? BC: Because it is. Starting at the top of the ticket we have two major party nominees who are disliked, distrusted, or held in low esteem by a near majority of American voters. This is of course BEFORE either candidate is actually in office, which typically takes its own toll on their job approval ratings. It is a continuing demonstration of the polarization of our nation, in part fed by social media and the immediacy of the internet, but also fueled by a very real disconnect of expectations from voters with their appointed and elected government officials at the local, state, and federal levels. This election is bi-furcated. A bit less than half would seem to want to blow up Washington, throw out every incumbent, and start from scratch. The other, slightly less than half, like and appreciate the direction which President Obama has been taking the country, and they want to head further in that direction. Our Town: What do you tell young and first time voters about the process? BC: Study up, read newspapers, or research online. Don’t depend solely on social media or your peer group. Attend candidate rallies and consider volunteering on a campaign for local office or state representative to begin to understand and fully appreciate the process. Register to vote as soon as you turn eighteen – now also automatic with obtaining your driver’s license – and participate not just in the general elections, but the primary and special elections, each of which matter considerably to the direction, leadership, and governance choices we make for our community, state, and federal governments. It’s your town, as well as your government. Crane is the senior political analyst with WSB Radio and TV and owns his own full-service communications consulting firm, CSI Crane, in Decatur. Realty Reality Continued from page 8 are considering reselling, that type of home only appeals to a very small niche market. Also, as time goes on, the value on the biggest home doesn’t appreciate as much as it would on a smaller home in the same neighborhood. In reality, it’s better to purchase the smallest home in the area. Interestingly enough, the worst house per square foot always trades for more than the biggest house. 5. The Community So you found the perfect house. Does it sit in the perfect area? Feel free to “stalk” the neighborhood. Drive by the house or through the neighborhood in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. You might not like what the neighbors do at 5 o’clock when they get home from work. Also, drive to the nearest grocery store. Drive to your work. Find parks and things to do nearby. Ask yourself if these are right for you. Remember to look up the schools as well. Even if you don’t have kids that go there, the school system affects the value of your home. The process of buying a house is complicated, but the future and new adventures are waiting. Following these tips and more can help you buy the perfect new home. More information at: http://www.kathycoots.com/

Since 2001 Today more and more peopleOperated are trying to do their own legal work. Some want to do their own divorce or probate a will. With research and effort, some can get it done. However, many legal procedures can be more complicated than they appear. Some people can, with some assistance, complete their own legal task. A client recently represented himself in a divorce. The judge told him he was likely to get custody of his child, but his pleadings did not include the necessary written provisions. Judges can’t give legal advice. Can you imagine if everyone approached the judge Senior Classes for legal advice? He or she would never get anything done. Our office was able to complete the paperwork for this client for a fee less than it would’ve cost to do the entire case. This is called Barre Classes “limited scope representation,” also known as “unbundling” legal services. Now This process usually involves drafting legal documents, doing legal research, or coaching how Offering to do a hearing, but not actually going to court. The client who wants this kind of advice is Class Membe rships! willing to do some of his own work, but can’t or would rather not hire an attorney for his entire case. In that situation, the lawyer may make less on a particular matter, but spend less time. Our office handled an appeal for a college student who had been unfairly disciplined. The matter involved detailed student handbook rules. The student filed appeal with documents we prepared and won her case at her hearing. Limited scope representation does not work for every legal matter. Some are too complicated or would require too much attorney time to deliver a product that would fill the bill. In limited scope representation the quality of legal work cannot be any less than it would for full representation. Limited scope representation can only be done if agreed to in writing with a detailed descripLocally tion of what the attorney will do and won’t do in the matter. In court matters, the attorney Owned would not be attorney of record or attend court, but would be responsible for delivering legal & Operated advice at the level required by the task. Garden Talk: Fall is Here and Prime for Planting By Dana Pike-Van Vlake

Curves has raised more than $15 million to fight breast cancer but we can always do more.

Fall is here and that means that it’s time to root for your favorite football team! But while rooting for your team is second nature, what about rooting for your plants? Fall is the prime time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials because it gives plants time to establish their root systems so that when spring comes, all their energy can be directed to blooming. Thanks to the summer heat, the soil temperatures will remain warm well into fall. This, combined with the autumn rains, gives new trees and shrubs the chance to spread their roots and firmly establish themselves in their new environment. To plant your trees and shrubs during the cooler season, dig a hole that is just deep enough to fit the root ball, but is twice as wide. Making the hole double wide provides softened soil for the new roots to spread and find additional water resources. If you find it difficult to dig a hole, you may be dealing with Georgia’s red clay or granite. Your plants will probably grow okay in this soil, but why not give it a great start? A good foundation is key to most any endeavor, so mix in some compost or store-bought amendments to your hard soil. When filling in the soil/mixture around the plant, cover it only to where the roots emerge from the tree trunk. As with any plant, be sure to give your new tree or shrub plenty of water while it adjusts to its new environment. Water more than you think you should for the first two weeks, backing off a little for about a month. Then water normally as the weather permits. A top quality starter fertilizer is a must for everything you are planting. Happy Fall, Y’all!

City of Lawrenceville Continued from page 13 will commence on Thanksgiving evening, and new this year is the Hometown Christmas Parade to kick off the holiday season. Marci has promised some fun surprises for parade attendees, so bring the family – you won’t want to miss it! Here is some exciting news for all you craft beer lovers out there. Lawrenceville will be the site of the first craft brewery in Gwinnett County! The Slowdown Brewing Company will make its home near the train depot, just a few blocks from historic downtown Lawrenceville. In addition to hosting tours, the Brewery will feature a tasting room and several craft selections that the owners hope to debut at local restaurants. Fan favorite Local Republic is currently renovating a new, larger space on the Square, and once moved, their old space will house Strange Taco Bar. Other innovative and exciting new restaurants will be opening soon as well. Growth and revitalization is a top priority for the city, thanks to a vibrant strategic plan for economic development. An Advisory Board was assembled just for this purpose, with members who are community leaders from Partnership Gwinnett, Georgia Gwinnett College, Gwinnett Medical Center, and many other businesses and organizations that make their home in Lawrenceville. As part of that plan, construction will take place to create a College Corridor directly connecting students at Georgia Gwinnett College with the offerings of Lawrenceville’s Downtown District. With the significant renovations that are already underway on the Historic Square, city leaders are proud of the progress already made, and are excited to unveil the other developments that spur from the current revitalization efforts. Quinn Miller is a senior wrestler and football player at Archer High School, and he’s had a pretty amazing athletic career in both sports. A state champion wrestler and a highly talented and recruited linebacker, Quinn is a natural leader who helps the NG3 Student Leadership Program (SLP) to grow and develop at Archer. On the field, Quinn leads by example. There is rarely another player who is going as fast or as hard. He studies film, works hard at practice, and is coachable. When he takes this same attitude about sports into the arena of life, he will most certainly be successful at whatever he does. Off the field, Quinn chooses to spend time teaching and leading a group of sophomores in the art of leadership and character development through the SLP. For NG3, it always starts with our 3 things: Do what you say, serve others, and bring change! Our Town (OT): What are you looking forward to this year with NG3? QM: I am looking forward to meeting kids at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and spending time with them. Seeing those kids last year really humbled me and reminded me of why I play football and wrestle. I do it for the kids who would do anything in the world to be able to play. OT: How are you involved with NG3, and what’s been your favorite memory? QM: I was introduced to NG3 and the Student Leadership Program by Will Bearden last year. He taught me what it was like to be a leader on and off the field. This year, I am one of the leaders in the SLP who talks to the younger students at Archer about responsibility and integrity. OT: What have you learned through NG3? QM: I have learned how important it is to do what you say. Many people say things that they later do not act upon. My time with NG3 has really shown me how much respect is given to you when you tell someone something and are responsible enough to follow through. Matt Williams is President of NG3. Girl Scout leader Andrea Raphael is passionate about “her girls.” Having been a scout herself for twelve years, she is in her sixth year as a leader and radiates an enthusiasm for her role and for what young girls can accomplish. She started a Daisy troop when her daughter was in kindergarten, and the girls are now Junior-level fifth graders. The activities her troop takes part in provide a combination of community service and good clean fun. “I think K-8th Girl Scouts a good Families Since 1986 Grade ~is Serving Tom Smith way to have the girls give back, to learn to be part of the community and to help791 others,” she Road says.• Lilburn, GA 30047 www.sjnrcs.org Instead of dues, they bring food items and toiletries to meetings and770-381-0557 donate them to•the Southeast Co-op. In October, they add Birthday Bags to their donations, which contain a small toy or cake mix, in honor of Girl Scout founder Juliet Gordon Lowe’s birthday. Each autumn they team up with the Boy Scouts on a project called Rivers Alive, a statewide event where participants clean up trash. Ms. Raphael says this makes the kids aware of how the environment is affected when people litter. The annual cookie sale teaches the girls about making and handling money while learning people skills like politely asking people to purchase cookies. A February event called Thinking Day brings area troops together to think and learn about the world around them by researching and presenting displays on various countries. First aid and some basic cooking skills have been learned as well. Ms. Raphael offers that even in this world of technology, it is still useful to know how to thread a needle and sew on a button. “And we do fun stuff,” adds Ms. Raphael, who tries to let the girls help plan their activities, which have included camping, geocaching, Christmas caroling, pottery-making, and trips to the library, Medieval Times, and a pet store. They have even made their own inventions! A hike to the top of Stone Mountain is in the works. Meetings tend to be half activity time and half “chill” time to allow the girls to bond and strengthen their friendships. While they all started elementary school together, some have moved or changed schools, so Girl Scouts is their common thread. Ms. Raphael feels it is important as they get older to remain good friends who share good values. Currently the girls are working on a high-level award called the Bronze Award which requires the girls to work through a series of steps to address a communal need in a positive away. Nothing is more important to me than serving you and ensuring that we improve the future of our community for our children and grandchildren I ran for State House to continue my commitment to this community—the same commitment I had as an educator, a community volunteer and business owner. Politics and partisan fights are not the answer to the challenges we face. The solution is having effective leaders who will rise above politics and deliver for us. That’s exactly what I’ve done as your Representative. If you want an effective leader you can trust, I ask for your vote. Our Town

“Passionate 4 a Cure” P4 Foundation’s Gino Vizzi is on a Mission to Help Others By Karla Socci Somers “Only one out of two million children – 16 years old – get this cancer, and he’s one of them,” says Toniann Vizzi. “And you know what? That’s for a reason. Because he has to do what he’s doing…He has to be the voice for these children.” Toniann is talking about her son, Gino Vizzi, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2014. Since then, Gino has been on a mission to help other children and their families through the challenging experience of a cancer diagnosis. With the help of his family, Gino started the “P4 Foundation” (which stands for “Pray for”) to assist children and their families through cancer treatments financially, spiritually, and educationally. “We have already helped about sixteen families,” Gino’s father, David Vizzi says. “We make monetary donations; give gift cards for organic foods and healthier eating; donate water purifying systems, juicers, and smoothie blenders,” David says. “Anything we can do to help kids build up their immune systems while they are undergoing treatment.” David explains that part of Gino’s mission is helping children and their families understand the link between beating cancer and healthy eating. “Cancer feeds on sugar!” David says, emphatically. “Let’s teach these kids about good food.” Treating the whole person and the whole family throughout the cancer treatments has become Gino’s mission. In fact, he currently attends the University of North Georgia where he is majoring in pre-med. Gino wants to become a medical doctor who practices a combination of medical, functional, and holistic medicine. “There are options [for treatment] that people don’t even realize,” David says. “We want to educate them about the available options.” In an effort to promote this education, the P4 Foundation hosted their First Annual Health and Wellness Event at Chateau Elan last April in which author Ty Bollinger, who wrote The Truth about Cancer, spoke about the many options available as complimentary treatment to chemotherapy. Educating parents and families about the benefits of eating well and holistic healing options is a great place to start, but Gino is taking it one step further with his “Crayons 4 Cancer” elementary school program. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, P4 Foundation partners with the elementary school and takes action. “Crayons 4 Cancer” helps teach the children about the benefits of healthy eating and cancer prevention through coloring books and fun activities. The foundation also raises money for the PTA, the child undergoing treatment, and his family. It works just like a typical school fundraiser with the added benefits of all the emotional and educational support these children need during a difficult time. Regarding all the families P4 Foundation assists, David says, “Gino feels a connection with these families. We build relationships with them. Gino personally speaks to the kids and lets them know they are going to be OK; their treatments will be over soon; their hair will grow back. It helps them understand they are not alone on their journey.” And, that is critical to their health and wellbeing. In addition to the “Crayons 4 Cancer” program, P4 Foundation hosts an annual chili cookoff, the Play4Cure Invitational baseball tournament, and a Home Run Derby at the Gwinnett Braves stadium. This past June at the Derby, they raffled off a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Cruiser, donated to the foundation by David’s brother and his wife, honoring her 17-year-old daughter, Leora Woodsmall, who lost her battle with childhood cancer in 2003. In an act of generosity, the first winner, Jack Harmon, Sr., of Harmon Financial, donated the bike back to the foundation and added a $2,500 customization package. Raffle tickets are on sale again, so another lucky winner will get the motorcycle and the custom package at the drawing on November 15, 2016 at Frazier’s Harley-Davidson in Buford. Proceeds will go to the foundation and to helping the next family in need. From the very beginning of his own cancer journey, it was clear that Gino was embarking on a mission not only to help himself, but to help others. Although Gino’s leukemia is incurable, and he will be taking a chemotherapy drug every day for the rest of his life, he selflessly focuses on the kids and families battling their own, often worse forms of life-threatening illnesses. David says Gino lives by the Golden Rule, and P4 Foundation works hard to carry out Gino’s mission of helping others. “He’s passionate about it! That’s where he’s taking his life.” More information at http://p4foundation.org

Shepherd’s Staff is fully supported by the community, with no governmental assistance. They receive support from thirty churches in the Loganville area, and from several grants. They also have a strong alliance with United Way of Walton County, their greatest grant provider. They partner with the Boy Scouts, home school groups, and Loganville High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. They have partnered with Well Care of Georgia for general health clinics as well as medical providers who administer the proper exams to women. The United States Post Office holds a food drive on the ministry’s behalf, and Publix not only provides food, but their employees also serve as volunteers. Shepherd’s Staff continues to grow on a consistent basis. They envision women’s seminars and many more community education programs. But, Herndon’s greatest desire is that clients who come into Shepherd’s Staff would leave understanding “God in a way that is real, and experience and trust Him.” More information at www.shepherdstaffloganville.com

Girl Scout Troop Continued from page 19 project must be sustainable and give back to the community on many levels. Choosing reading and literacy, the girls have decided to create a Little Free Library, a concept where books are shared by the “Take one, leave one” principle. Most of the girls are creative and love to paint and draw, so they are excited to design and decorate the library, which will be a repurposed newspaper stand donated by The Walton Tribune. Each girl must log at least 20 hours on the project to earn the award, and will keep a notebook to document her contributions. “It’s a process,” says Ms. Raphael. “They’re owning it, and their creativity is in it.” The troop is still looking for a location, hoping to find a place where the likelihood of vandalism is low; perhaps somewhere that has a lobby and lots of kid traffic. The girls will design drop-off boxes to place in their schools and other locations for book donations, and they plan a ribbon-cutting ceremony when the project is finished. The process of earning the Bronze Award empowers girls by giving them a sense of making a difference in their community. This outgoing group is anxious to spread the word and to ask for help with their project, mainly in the form of donations of books for all reading levels or a location, but small cash donations to help with supplies will also be appreciated.
