On the Cover: Mainstreet Guns & Range CEO is Committed to Teaching Safety to Gun Owners By Heidi Campbell After years in the formal apparel business, Jim and Genny Hornsby retired in 2001, trading in their gowns for guns. “I’m thankful my wife was willing to let me do this,” says Hornsby, CEO of Mainstreet Guns and Range. “I was always a gun nut,” says Hornsby, “so when we retired, I knew I wanted to do something with guns. We opened a small store off of Arcado, and became the largest gun show dealer in Georgia.” In January of 2013, they opened their doors in Lilburn, stocked with 2,000 retail guns and over 120 rental guns. While handguns are their top sellers, they also sell militarystyle guns, self-defense shot guns, and hunting rifles, ranging in price from $200 to $2,000. The top selling brands are Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Springfield. “Our prices are the best around,” promises Hornsby. “We have gun show pricing every day.” Mainstreet Guns gives customers the rare opportunity to test out guns in the range before making a purchase. “We sell hunting guns, but those are really seasonal. Most shoppers,” reveals Hornsby, “come in looking for personal defense.” Aside from having the area’s largest selection in their retail showroom, they also host a climate-controlled, ninelane shooting range. The range is open to anyone over twelve years old, if accompanied by a parent, those 18 and up with shotguns and rifles only, and those 21 and up with

handguns and any other guns. Shooting practice is $12.00 an hour for the first person, and $10 for the second person. Women are free on Wednesdays. Yearly memberships for unlimited shooting are $299, and family memberships are available for $399 per year. With fourteen employees and an outstanding management team, the store is dedicated to customer service. A gunsmith is on hand to repair and fix guns. “Our staff is a great group. Some have been here for over ten years,” says Hornsby. “They could work anywhere, but they choose to work here. They work here out of passion. They love guns, and without the support of Dave Smith, our General Manager, we would not be the smooth operation that we are.” Genny Hornsby handles the Federal compliance side of the business. A person age 21 and up may only purchase a hand gun (18 for a long gun) in the state of residence, unless he or she is in the military, where a firearm may be purchased in the state the person is stationed in. A 4473 Form must be filled out to ensure the purchaser is not a felon or drug addict. If the buyer has no Georgia Carry Permit, an instant background check is executed. “These checks are in place to ensure that only non-criminals can purchase guns,” explains Hornsby. “Our top priority is safety.” Mainstreet Guns focuses on training programs to teach safety to new gun owners. They have seven NRA certified instructors, and their senior instructor, Dirk Daube, is a trainer of trainers who has written manuals for the NRA

and the Boy Scouts of America. Their training classes, offered regularly throughout the year and limited to eight students, are made up of about two-thirds women and one third men. Continued on page 19

"Let's Be Glad You Did!" Let's Compare...

From the Publisher:

Let’s Compare… "Let's Be Glad

Let's Compare...

One Man’s Opinion Why does modern media fail to cover good people and positive news? Why do we seldom hear about a neighbor helping a stranger in need, of local volunteers feeding the hungry in our community, of people rescuing animals left for dead, or about local law and emergency heroes who risk their lives for us each day? You see, the media feeds on negative-focused sensationalism to garner attention and gain a following. We don’t hear about a teacher working extra hours to help a student pass a course, but we do hear of the handful of educators who have messed up. We do not see news about our schools, but instead hear what is wrong with them. We hear about political parties who seemingly argue about everything, when most people I hear from simply want a better life for their family. People are sick of the sensationalistic news, so let’s give it a rest. People love this community. They have amazing stories of what they are doing to make our community a better place. Our Town never focuses on negative stories that serve no purpose but to divide us. Does this mean our community is perfect? Of course not. There is no such thing on this earth. However, in all my travels across the globe, I have found few places that have a greater sense of community than we have. From my vantage point, this community does not see “age, disability, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or skin color.” We see flesh and blood. We see people trying to live a peaceful life and trying to make a difference. We see families who love each other and friends who care for one another. We see people who want to be heard and understood, not judged and yelled at. We see neighbors we care about. You see, this community consists of people of character. Our community may have our differences, but we look out for one another. You should be proud of that. I am. Quite frankly, I see a lot more of what we have in common than what we do not. Where we work, live, and play is special. Have a great month and as always...this is your town, my town, OUR TOWN.

Community Member Spotlight: Doug and Shirley Quillen By Perry Rosenbaum Before we’re even born, we’re given an expiration date. There’s never any telling when your number may be up. Many people resolve to use their time as wisely as they can, doing their level best to make every moment count. Doug and Shirley Quillen are two of those lucky people who have been blessed not only with longevity, but a rich life. Doug, age ninety-one, and Shirley, age ninety, will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on October 20th, although to hear them tell it, they’re just as enamored with each other as they’ve been since the day they met. “We got married because we loved each other, and that’s never changed,” Doug explains. “If there’s been a problem, we’ve always worked it out.” Although the two are not originally from Gwinnett, they have embraced their new home with gusto. “We’re both from Virginia and lived most of our lives in Florida,” Shirley opines, “but we relocated to Gwinnett this past May to be closer to our family.” Undoubtedly, two people who’ve lived for nine full decades will periodically field questions about their secrets to a long life. For the Quillens, the philosophy is a simple one – staying young is crucial. “I think it was the fact that we retired early and dedicated most of our time to being with our family,” Shirley says. Although the idea is easy enough, figuring out logistics has to be a minor struggle for the Quillens. Their two sons gave them six grandchildren, who in turn have given them nine great grandchildren. Doug and Shirley’s bloodline now contains members aged sixty-nine to just eight months. It hasn’t all been roses and rainbows, though. During World War II, Doug served overseas for three years as an airplane mechanic. “New pilots were given a minimum of training back then,” Doug says. “They were in unfamiliar territory, so we were navigating them into China and back.” While his task was quite harrowing, Shirley’s lot at home was no less difficult. “We were engaged when Doug was deployed, but we chose to wait until after he returned to get married. I lived with my parents and worked [as a secretary] first with the Norfolk & Western Railway, then later with a local law firm.” Surviving and thriving after this ordeal is a testament to the indomitable Continued on page 21

Three Blind Mice: Popularity and Community Spirit Still Soaring Five Years Later

TAKE THE NEXT STEP COACHING | CONSULTING | TRAINING

By Heidi Campbell Steak Dianne. Shrimp and grits. Wine. Craft beer. Hospitality. Lilburn locals quickly discovered all these in one location, and they’ve been returning ever since. Three Blind Mice, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, is a popular bistrostyle restaurant, specializing in fresh food, seasonal menus, and unique bar options. Employing over forty people, including numerous Parkview and Brookwood High school students, the restaurant has made some exciting changes and still continue to faithfully support the local community. In December of 2013, owners Carla and Tim Shannon, Monica Murphy, August Perez, and Matt Murphy agreed to extend the restaurant’s blueprint, which opened up numerous new possibilities. They expanded the restaurant to include space for not only a wine boutique and craft beer retail shop, but also a new, private dining room. “With the door closed,” reveals Carla, “the dining room seats twenty, but the entire side over there can hold up to forty-two.” Carla continues, “We do all sorts of events now that we’ve expanded; everything from rehearsal dinners to pharmaceutical events, bridal showers, to anniversary parties. We even had one couple who came in here on their first date and ended up having their entire wedding here!” Everything is made fresh. A pastry chef prepares the desserts in-house. Each evening, the servers and bartenders, a close knit group, line up to taste the chef ’s nightly specials: a seafood selection, a pasta dish, and a flatbread. The menu, which changes seasonally, appeals to all palates. They offer not only vegetarian and gluten free options, but they can make several of their options vegan-friendly. There is truly something for everyone. “We listen to the customers, too,” says Carla. “Having been here five years, we can now look back at what’s done well and what hasn’t. We bring out new dishes. We try things.” The unique selection of wine and beer is a priority, and, according to Carla, they seek Continued on page 12

Chaplain’s Corner: For God So Loved that He Gave… By Dr. Paul Ballard At the time that reformer Martin Luther was having his Bible printed in Germany, a printer’s daughter encountered God’s love. No one had told her about Jesus. Toward God she felt no emotion but fear. One day she gathered pieces of fallen Scripture from the floor. On one slip of paper she found the words, “For God so loved the world that He gave…” The rest of the verse had not yet been printed. Still, the thought that God would give anything moved her from fear to joy. When her mother asked the cause of her happiness, the daughter produced the crumpled partial verse from her pocket. The mother read it and asked, “What did He give?” The child answered, “I do not know, but if He loved us well enough to give us anything, we should not be afraid of Him.” John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” People ask me, “Paul, what does it mean to believe in Jesus?” Belief is not intellectual ascent. Belief is not performing religious acts to be seen by others. Belief is trust. Belief is surrender. Trust is necessary because we are sinful, broken, messed up people who must trust in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection for our salvation. Salvation means that we are reconciled to our heavenly Father. Our only hope for rescue is in Jesus and not in us. We must trust in Jesus’ work for us. Surrender is necessary because Jesus demands total allegiance. The Bible goes so far as to say that when we come to Christ, we must die to ourselves and live for Him. This God who loved us so much that He gave His only Son asks us to trust and surrender to His Lordship. I would say, because He loved us enough to give us his Son, we should not be afraid of Him. out wines that can’t be found at the grocery or package store. Wine tastings now happen on the third Wednesday of each month. Other Wednesdays will now introduce “wine flights,” where guests can sample three different wines. Beer tasting has also been added to the calendar every other Tuesday, which includes six four-ounce tastes for $8.00. “Sometimes it is themed around a particular season, sometimes it’s a specific brewery,” explains Carla. “Honestly, Jerad, our bar manager, does a great job of changing it up.” The owners of Three Blind Mice are dedicated to giving back to the local community. They support the Parkview and Brookwood clusters through gift cards and sponsorships for sports and activities. They also support numerous other worthwhile causes, including those that support children’s cancer, children’s kidney problems, and the Gwinnett Humane Society. “At the end of the day,” shares Carla, “our regulars are the center of Three Blind Mice. We really have a Cheers atmosphere where everyone knows your name. The community can feel like this is truly their home away from home. The owners, bartenders, and servers know the regulars. It really is like a family.” More info: http://www.tbmrestaurant.com/

Why Alkaline vs. Acidity Matters By Julie Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC Alkaline versus acidity in the body is a confusing subject to most. Why does this matter, and how can we balance this important ratio? Acidity in the body is the underlying, number one cause of most disease. When the body is too acidic, it causes inflammation. When you experience chronic inflammation, your immune function is impaired, toxins are trapped, nutrients are blocked, cells degenerate, and much more. An extremely acidic environment allows disease to live and thrive. Your body’s alkaline and acid balance, also known as pH, can affect your overall well-being. All foods have the ability to change your body’s normal pH. The fluids and tissues do not stay in these fluctuating states of “too acidic” or “too alkaline” because the body is always striving toward balance. However, imbalance and disease can set in when the body is daily dealing with too many acid-forming foods and too much stress. Your body fights hard to neutralize acids and maintain the proper pH in organs, tissues, and body fluids. But it can only do that for so long before a condition known as acidosis occurs. You have to give the body what it needs, in the form of alkalizing fruits and vegetables, so that it can properly maintain the delicate acid base balance. Maintaining a balance of 75 percent alkaline foods and 25 percent acidic foods is ideal. An easy way to accomplish this is to make fruits and vegetables, most of which are alkaline in nature, the main part of each meal. Some fruits, such as citrus, have an acidic pH outside of the body, but when consumed, leave an alkaline residue in the body after being metabolized. It is a good idea to look up alkalizing foods on the internet and try to eat something every day from that list. Reduce processed foods and increase your water, and you will be well on your way to balancing your pH. Julie Mills-Watson is owner of Body of Health and Life, LLC. Learning Lessons: Special Study Requirements for Mathematics By Carol C. Wood Math is a subject that must be studied differently than other courses. Two characteristics separate it from other subjects: it is sequentially learned, and it is a skill subject. For a student to have success in math, he/ she must understand these two differences and then be willing to change the approach to math study. Math is sequentially learned, meaning each math topic is built upon previously taught concepts. To perform computations correctly, these previous topics must be mastered. Initially, a student must identify these topics, and once identified, be re-taught the missing concepts and practice problems until the technique is fully grasped, giving him/her a solid foundation. When all previously taught topics are mastered, a student can better learn the current math being taught at school. Ideally, a student should fully understand the topics presented in class each day by practicing the example problems presented until he/she can correctly work them all of them without assistance. Math is a skill subject, which means it must be practiced and drilled for perfection. Similar to playing a sport or musical instrument, perfecting math skills requires instruction, practice, monitoring, further correction, and more practice. A student is first shown the proper method to solve a math problem and then is to attempt to solve the problem without assistance. If a wrong answer is derived, the student must locate where and why the process erred, correct his/her problem solving technique, and attempt another similar problem. The student is to repeat this until that type of problem is mastered and before moving on to the next type. Daily math practice makes for the most successful math student. In fact, when a teacher does not assign math homework on any given day, the student’s homework is to review his/her class notes and re-work the presented example problems until each can be solved correctly without referring to the notes. By acknowledging these special study characteristics for math and acting upon them, a student will solve his/her math difficulties, become more successful in math courses, reduce stress, and perhaps find him/herself actually enjoying math! The Au Fabulous food and great music are the main Rise Co ingredients for the sixth annual Taste of Tucker, B to be held on Main Street in Tucker on Saturday, Chic Oct. 24 from 1-6 p.m. Featuring savory dishes from some two dozen local restaurants, plus a full program of live bands, the celebration will appeal to all ages. Special attractions include a children’s play area staffed by volunteers from St. Bede’s Episcopal Church, a bazaar of local produce and other unique items organized by the Tucker Farmers Market, and drink venues coordinated by Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Partners. Three local bands, Flat Rock Swing, Downtown Executives, and Moontower, will be showcased on the Georgia United Credit Union’s main stage. “This is a wonderful opportunity for area residents to show their support for local restaurants and for the restaurants to showcase their dishes,” said event coordinator Art Wood. “We anticipate more than 5,000 of our neighbors will show up for the food, the music, and the small town fellowship.” Proceeds from the event benefit NETWorks Cooperative Ministry and other local charities. “Our partnership with Taste of Tucker has been very valuable,” explained Holly Duncan, director of NETWorks, a coalition of local churches that fights hunger and poverty in the community. “We contribute a lot of volunteer hours to planning and conducting the event, which allows us to reach more residents with the message of what we do. Last year’s Taste of Tucker raised more than $10,000 for NETWorks, and we believe this year’s celebration will be bigger and better than ever.” For more information on Taste of Tucker, including application forms for restaurant owners interested in participating, go to www.tasteoftucker.com.

Pacing, Rhythm, and Kick By Jane Bishop, Life Coach/Speaker The flag dropped and my group was off (see September article)! It was now time to focus on what mattered most – pacing to coordinate between each step and my mind. I had to listen to my heartbeat, breathing, and cadence to achieve the fluid movement I had trained for. Crowds along the course offered cheers of encouragement. At any point, I could have been drawn into the excitement and been distracted from the meter of my pace. That would have affected my rhythm, and changed the outcome of my race. Rhythm is everywhere – from the heartbeat in our chest to the roar of the tires we drive. “Much of what fills our ears has a meter, whether we’re conscious of it or not” (Scott Helman). Test this statement by stopping right now and listening. What do you hear? Listen for the meter, and begin to snap your fingers with the cadence. Learning to move through life with the fluid coordination of a dancer helps bring order to chaos, balance and flexibility, and purpose to live4ward. I call it the ebb and flow of living. To live without rhythm is like driving a car with intermittent acceleration and braking. It’s detrimental to the car and to the passengers! Rhythm in life is more about a pattern than a quantity. Acknowledging this has released me from unconscious expectations and has allowed me to listen for the cadence needed at the moment. When that happens, there is less stress and more joy, which will contribute to a longer life. What is keeping you from establishing a rhythm for your life? And what does that have to do with kick? Be sure and check next month for the answer. Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. More information at www.takethenextstepcct.com.

Parkview Cluster Foundation Invites Families to Enjoy Fun Run By Mike Levengood The Parkview Cluster Foundation is pleased to announce its inaugural Fun Run to be held at Lilburn Park during the afternoon of Sunday, October 18, 2015. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the program is slated to end by 4:30 p.m. Last summer, community leaders, teachers, and the principals of all Parkview Cluster schools organized the Parkview Cluster Foundation. The schools include Arcado Elementary, Camp Creek Elementary, Knight Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary, Trickum Middle, and Parkview High School. Initial officers are President Mike Levengood, President-Elect David Will, Treasurer Debbie Perry, and Secretary Jamie Willard. Principal Kay Sands of Trickum Middle School is the lead principal. In 2014, the Foundation issued an appeal to the Parkview Community and successfully raised $10,000, thereby qualifying for a matching grant. Several teachers in each of the Parkview Cluster schools accepted the Foundation’s invitation to submit grant applications to support academic priorities, and the Foundation awarded $9,000 in grants during the spring semester this year. The Foundation has planned the Fun Run as its primary fund raiser, and is pleased to invite students, parents, teacher, alumni, and community supporters to participate in the afternoon of fun and fitness, and to help support academic priorities of the Parkview Cluster schools. The Fun Run will have one mile and 5K races, as well as food trucks and family activities. All of the event’s proceeds go directly back into grants for teaching and learning in the Parkview schools. Early registration information may be obtained by visiting the Parkview Cluster Foundation’s website at http://parkviewfoundation.org/parkview-cluster-foundation-funrun/, and by visiting the Parkview Cluster Foundation’s Facebook page. Additional information may be obtained from Foundation volunteers who will host an information table during the next two Parkview home football games, by sending an email to parkviewclusterfoundation@gmail.com, or by calling 404.723.1972.

Mainstreet Guns stays active in the community, helping numerous charity programs including a recent event for the National Guard’s Georgia State Defense Force. They also support Lilburn city programs with booth space rentals. “We want to set up an environment that is not intimidating,” says Hornsby. “We like to let people know that we offer training to help educate people about gun safety.” Hornsby chose Lilburn because he not only lives minutes away, but he had developed a great relationship with the Lilburn Police Department. “We acquired this building because it was the only building in town, and we have had a great past relationship with the Lilburn Police Department. They have always been stellar. We can’t thank them enough.” Hornsby looks forward to many more years in the Lilburn business district. He is thankful to have not only a business that he is passionate about, but, more importantly, one that educates the community in the safety and responsibility of gun ownership. “It feels good to hear a customer say she feels more comfortable and safe in her home,” shares Hornsby. “I like providing this peace of mind to people.” More information at http://www.mainstreetfirearms.com.

spirit both Quillens possess. Another point of pride is that they are very well-traveled. “I worked for Eastern Airlines,” Doug says, “so we would get free flights to a myriad of places. We also had a motor home that we used to traverse the United States.” Granddaughter Miranda Hoskins remembers this fondly, adding, “They took me on a cross country road trip when I was five-years-old that really shaped me as a person.” Giving back to the community is very important to Doug and Shirley. They founded the first Cub Scouts pack in their neighborhood back in 1954, followed by the creation of the first Boy Scouts pack in 1958. Moreover, they cite the conversion of a hotel into a hospital for disabled children in Umatilla, Florida as one of their greatest accomplishments. The Quillens are wonderful people who have spent their lives spreading as much love and goodwill as possible. They’ll be celebrating their seventy years together with a dinner at the Atlanta Elks Lodge restaurant on October 24th, a night that will assuredly be meaningful to everyone in attendance.
