Chronic Fatigue and Your Hormones Symptoms are an indicator that things are not right.

v v v v v v v v v v v

Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance Include: Stress Morning fatigue Fibromyalgia Difficulty Sleeping Allergies Decreased stamina Headaches Anxiety Sugar cravings Irritability Dizzy spells

v Chronic Fatigue is a syndrome experienced by a growing number of Americans. There are many contributing factors, however, it is critical to assess the health of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are small organs that sit on top of the kidneys and are designed to produce Cortisol‌a hormone that helps us handle stressful situations. v When the adrenal glands are asked to make Cortisol on a constant basis, eventually they slow down significantly. It’s like drawing down all the water in a reservoir long before the rainy season can replenish it, and then having a drought. The body no longer produces enough Cortisol to get going on the day, let alone to make it through to bed time. If you have symptoms of chronic fatigue it is time to test your cortisol levels and see if your adrenal glands are healthy.

How can you check if your adrenal glands are still healthy? 3 Saliva test for hormone levels

On the Cover: 1910 Public House Welcomes Fall with New Menu and Beer Options, Lower Prices, and an Artistic New Event Space By Heidi Campbell When Jennifer started as a trainee in the restaurant where Anthony Tiberia was working in 1993, Anthony bet one of his coworkers $20.00 that he would go out with her first. Twentytwo years, two kids, five dogs, and one rescued turtle later, it is evident that Anthony won that bet. Anthony and Jennifer Tiberia, owners of Lilburn’s 1910 Public House, started their restaurant ownership six years ago, when they opened Sprig in the Oak Grove area of DeKalb. “About three years after we opened Sprig,” Anthony recalls, “we were approached by some people from the city of Lilburn about opening another restaurant. It was really pretty serendipitous because we were actually thinking of opening one! We made a deal to purchase the building and opened our 1910 Public House.” The Tiberias worked hard to modernize their downtown Lilburn building, which was built in 1892. They tore down plaster walls, adorned the front windows with little adages from the early 1900s like “Don’t mind if I do,” updated the plumbing and electricity, and replaced the pitched roof with the current vintage-storefront look. They established a mascot named Chandler in the likeness of their first whippet, and a statue of the pup greets patrons at the door. A local artist has even begun painting portraits of their other dogs, dressed in the attire of the early 1900s. The 1910 in the restaurant’s name came from the date the city of Lilburn was incorporated, and the Public House came

from the idea that they wanted to create a “public house” for locals to bring families, meet friends, eat, and drink. With an old building comes years of folklore and history. For instance, one patron, soon after their opening, asked the manager who the man was standing in the corner. No one else saw this man, but she sensed spirits in the restaurant, and asked to set up ghost surveillance, free of charge. The Tiberias obliged, and were fascinated by the odd things they saw: lights in dark rooms, voices, and things moving around. “Legend has it here was a huge train wreck here back in the days when the trains used to pass by the front of this building, so maybe there are spirits in here,” suggests Anthony. “We probably upset the spirits with all of our work, but they’ve settled down. We haven’t heard or seen anything in a while.” The 1910 Public House, now in its third year, has close to thirty employees including Rich, the general manager, and Brian, the assistant manager. The menu changes seasonally, and their new fall selections promise some delicious new additions including: a ribeye steak; two stroganoff options – lamb or portabella mushroom with butternut squash; tacos with chipotle braised beef cheeks, beets, and feta; a black bean burger; and a trout dip. Britt, the chef from Sprig, has taken the helm as head chef over both Sprig and the 1910, and plans to bring exciting nightly specials back to the menu. “We are really picky with our ingredients. We support local farmers, and try to use as many local growers as we can,” explains Anthony. “We believe that life is too short to eat bad food.

Four Agents - One Team One Goal 100% Customer Satisfaction

We give our chef an empty palate and allow him to use his talents.” On the “Market” side of the building, craft beers are all the rage. With over thirty taps, locals can stop in for a pint or take a growler to go. The beer options are regional, and the most popular taps are the Wicked Weed out of Asheville, North Carolina, and Creature Comfort out of Athens, Georgia. “We are excited about the growth we plan for our ‘growler phase,’” Jennifer explained. “We plan to offer beer and wine tastings, and expand our retail wine selections.” Those looking to host larger gatherings can now make plans in the 1910 Public House’s new event space, which can welcome up to eighty for a sit down event and one hundred for a cocktail-style party. The space, which has wall murals painted by Sonny Franks, a local artist, is one that can be truly tailored to the customer’s needs. “We work out individualized plans with our customers,” explains Anthony. “We can do a full buffet, or a sit down dinner. Our [made from] ‘scratch’ kitchen will accommodate all sorts of options.” Continued on page 24

From the Publisher: One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers

@RyanSauers

As I have been giving speeches in recent weeks, I have opened my remarks with the following statement. I ask the audience to reflect upon two words that are not that different in appearance, but quite different in meaning. The two words are UNTIE and UNITE. You see, the two words are comprised of the exact same letters. The only change is switching the place of the letter “T” and “I. What does this mean? When “T” is in front of “I” we get the words UNTIE which means things are coming apart or undone. It means we are divided and pointing fingers about what is wrong. In contrast, when the “I” is in front of the “T” we get the word UNITE. This means people/ things are coming together. We are finding common ground. And instead of pointing out differences, we are embracing our common humanity. The Our Town community epitomizes what the word UNITE is all about. We are diverse and we embrace it. It makes us the best community around. We are all human. We are made of flesh and blood. We sleep, eat, drink, and love. You see, we all want to be loved, to seek peace, to laugh, to have less stress, and to be encouraged, and we wish we had more time. We all want an as good if not better life for our kids and grandkids than the life we have. The people I see in the Our Town community are doing amazing things. They are not “talking” about making a difference but are “living out” making a difference. I wish you could sit in my place for one month. You would be amazed at the amount of positive happenings that are personally shared with me. It is overwhelming, and Our Town shares as many of these stories as possible. However, we must be careful as (month after month) we are bombarded with negative news. And it can be easy to almost become “tricked” into believing this is the norm. The mainstream media is clever in grabbing our attention with negative headlines. Please know this is only a tiny sliver of news. And, it is not representative of the positive things going on in our country and our community. In the Our Town community, we do not buy into negativity… as this negativity does not help us UNITE. We do not settle. Ever. We continue on our never-ending journey of good to great. I challenge you and I challenge myself. Do not waste a moment in the world of UNTIE… stay focused on UNITE. If we continue to look at ourselves (in the proverbial mirror) first, it is difficult to focus on what is wrong with others. Let’s continue doing what has made us one of the best communities in this country, and then… stretch some more. Let’s love more and criticize less. Let’s work to find common ground (UNITE) with others we may not know or understand. If we start with a couple of things we share in common, then relationships can blossom and great things will happen. Together we can and will let the Our Town community become the model that other parts of the country seek to emulate. I could not be more proud of you all. I could not be more proud of where I work, live, and play. People need encouragement, and they are eager to hear a kind word. People need to laugh and they want to smile. So, give them that smile... and make their day. Let’s make September (as football – yes, my favorite time of year – begins) an amazing month. It is a rather rare occurrence when you have a student enrolled at the same preschool his father attended when he was a little boy. According to Valerie Coe Lowder, Director of Smoke Rise Baptist Weekday School, that is exactly what happened this past year. Since 1973, the longstanding Weekday School has been teaching children and serving the community for more than four decades. With the philosophy and core values of Worship, Learn, Care, Serve, Give, Smoke Rise Baptist Weekday School offers little ones a foundation that will serve them throughout their later years of education. “Many parents are looking for a Christian environment where they know their kids will get exposure to the language and ideas of faith,” says Coe Lowder. The school’s values are expressed through a teaching curriculum in an age-appropriate way for each class, 15 months through kindergarten. The kindergarten uses Mathematics Their Way, a hands-on manipulative program, and McGraw-Hill’s Reading, Writing and Listening curriculum. Younger classes use Peabody curricula and Letter People to introduce the alphabet and phonics and to explore early language development. Annual testing of kindergarten students shows that the children consistently are academically prepared for elementary school. “What we do really, really well for the kids and their families,” Coe Lowder notes, “is create a community.” The Weekday School not only teaches children academically and spiritually, but it also offers a way for kids and families to connect with each other, the church, and the surrounding community. This past year, the Weekday School supported the church’s ministry outreach to South Carolina for the annual family mission trip. “Teaching kids how to worship, learn, care, serve, and give in age-appropriate ways is even more important than learning colors,” Coe Lowder says. “Which we also do, of course. But, it’s really about creating a sense of caring and generosity for others that will serve the children throughout their lives.” Learning through play and having fun are key factors at the Weekday School, too. The curriculum includes singing worship songs, saying prayers, listening to Bible verses, attending weekly chapel services, having music and movement time, reading stories, doing arts and crafts, and participating in free play. The children spend time talking about topics such as the world in which they live, and how to be a good friend to others. Classes each have two teachers with just 10 to 16 children per class, and are grouped according to age: Toddlers and Twos (ages 15 to 29 months); Older Twos (ages 30 to 35 months); Threes, Fours (Pre-K), and Kindergarten. Several of the teachers at the Weekday School, which is a member of the Georgia Preschool Association, have been on staff for more than twenty years. They regularly attend professional development classes and seminars, and everyone is certified in CPR. Coe Lowder also notes that the school is nut-and allergy-sensitive, so they can safely and happily accommodate children with food allergies. Staff members are also trained in anaphylactic shock assistance. New this year is the playground. Children can now enjoy a state-of-the-art, fully accessible play area. A Dedication Celebration was held on August 21st, to “officially” open the play zone. “We offer a rich experience,” says Coe Lowder. “If children at this young age have the skills and confidence and feel loved – the less tangible things – it makes them more ready for school in the long run.” Smoke Rise Baptist Weekday School is still enrolling students for the 2016-2017 school year. Fitness Foundations: Protecting Yourself through Education

VOTE…Early Voting October 17th & Election Day November 8th

Elect Jasper Watkins III

By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT About a month ago, I stopped on my way into work to vacuum out my car. I was closing the back door when a voice whispered in my ear. I spun around and proceeded to have a fifteen minute, uncomfortable, space-invading “conversation” with a man who was considerably larger than I am. I was harassed in broad daylight at 9 a.m. He came out of nowhere. It was scary and intimidating. While I wasn’t physically harmed, I was left wondering, if things had escalated, what I could have done. We have all heard stories of women falling victim to physical assaults and various crimes. It is on the news every night. In addition to physical attacks, there are phone and internet scams. Should we live in fear? Sacrifice walks outside in the name of personal safety? Absolutely not. There is another way…education. Ladies Workout has been serving the health and fitness needs for women of our community for over twenty years. We care about these women and we are extremely proud of our community. This is why we are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer, in conjunction with the Snellville Police Department, a FREE Personal Safety & Scam Protection Class! Join us Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Ladies Workout, to learn personal safety techniques and how to avoid falling victim to current scams. This class is conducted by Snellville’s Finest police officers and is FREE to the public. The officers will be conducting lectures and demonstrations, free childcare and refreshments will be provided, and every participant will leave with a gift. So bring your mamas, grandmas, and daughters! Contact the Ladies Workout front desk at 770.985.6070 for more information. There are people out there in the world, in person and online, with the intent to do harm. Do not put your life on hold or live in fear. Educate yourself, be aware, make safer choices, and get out in the world and get moving! Kelly Farris is the owner of Ladies Workout Snellville and the President of KLF Fitness. Cheryl Draper loves many things: reading, sewing, traveling, and lounging in her lazy boy. But there is perhaps one thing she loves above the rest – volunteering and substitute teaching at Camp Creek Elementary School. Originally from Tuskegee, Alabama, Draper met her husband her freshman year of college and moved to California, where they raised their four children. Being a stay-at-home mom left her a little bit of free time, so she began volunteering in her children’s elementary school. It was there she found her passion for teaching, and with a nudge from the principal to go back to school and earn her education degree, she graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills a few years later. For the next eighteen years, Draper taught at that same elementary school, but in 2001, decided to pack up and move to Georgia. “I had been coming to Georgia to see my children and my grandbabies every summer,” Draper said, “but one summer I decided to make the change permanent.” After settling into her new Lilburn home, Draper worked for a year, but then decided to take a year off, which, by a happy accident, has stretched into the present. Taste of Snellville Offers a Taste of Not Only Food, But Local Music and Art as Well By Heidi Campbell Snellville is welcoming the public to the first annual “Taste of Snellville” on Saturday, September 17th from 4 – 8 p.m. on the Snellville Town Green. This event will allow locals to get a “taste” of not only local restaurants, but also local jazz and art. The admission to the event, which is hosted by Snellville Tourism & Trade, is free, but tickets will be on sale in order to participate in the wide variety of food tasting. Inflatables will be standing by to amuse the children, live jazz music will encourage visitors to get up and dance, artists will be selling their creations, and hands on art events will make the event truly memorable. Whether it’s American, Caribbean, Chinese, Jamaican, Italian, Mediterranean, or German, the diversity of the restaurants offering samples of their food is sure to please every palate. Organizer Kelly McAloon, Executive Director of Snellville Tourism & Trade, created a “stamp card” in order to encourage patrons to try a variety of foods. “People can get their stamp card filled,” explains McAloon, “and then drop the card in the box for a chance to win some great door prizes.” The “Team Snellville Volunteers” will set up the event, and Mayor Tim Witts will be there to introduce the city council members and kick off the music. The Jazz Fusion Kings will play from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., and the Metro Jazz Club will continue from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. “The 5181_Dr Chris September ad with bleeds.pdf 8/11/2016 12:20:34 PM says McAloon. “Without them, we Team Snellville Volunteers are truly the 1heart of the city,” Continued on page 18

Crane’s Corner: Political Insights from Bill Crane

and the Ninja Warrior Experience!

By Bill Crane What Is a Libertarian...and Why Should I Care? “Every face on Mt. Rushmore was a third party candidate at some point or another.” Former New Mexico Governor, Gary Johnson, Libertarian Party Presidential nominee 2016. George Washington was a Federalist. Thomas Jefferson helped birth a third party among the Federalists and Whigs. Teddy Roosevelt, who became president following the assassination of President McKinley, was re-elected as a Republican, and later ran as a Progressive (Bull Moose) third party candidate. America’s third political party was originally called the Democratic-Republican Party, which split into two factions during the 1820s, the National Republicans and the Democrats. Though the Democratic and Republican parties both claim Thomas Jefferson as being among their founders, Jefferson first ran for president as a National Republican against Federalist John Adams with whom he had served as vice president in 1800. Jefferson attempted to run on a “ticket” with Aaron Burr as his running mate. The Electoral College made no distinction between candidates for president and vice president. Jefferson and Burr tied with rival/peer and former president John Adams and his running mate, Charles Pinckney, finishing a close second. With no Electoral College majority, the election moved to the U.S. House of Representatives. Jefferson won the White House on the 35th ballot, and Burr was selected as vice president. After losing his first presidential bid in 1824, Andrew Jackson organized his supporters into what we now know as the Democratic Party around the election of 1828, a “third party” to the Federalists and Whigs in that day. This brings us back to the present election year. At no time since modern day polling data has been available have both major party nominees had such high negatives and unfavorable ratings among voters. Though each nominee has their strengths and followers, millions of voters are already lamenting their choice of “the lesser of two evils.” The most established third party in America today is the Libertarian Party. Though an over-simplification, Libertarians believe in state’s rights, a very limited federal government, little or no social policy/laws, and are often described as fiscal conservatives/social liberals. The Libertarian Convention nominated two well-regarded former GOP governors, Gary Johnson of New Mexico and William Weld of Massachusetts. When re-elected to his second term in “Tax-achussetts,” a state long-controlled by Democrats, Weld won by the largest majority in the history of the office or the state. He was nominated by then President Bill Clinton to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico to assist with the implementation of NAFTA. After stepping down as governor, Weld’s nomination was blocked by Senator Jesse Helms who considered Weld an unacceptable social moderate. If Libertarians average 15% in national polls during August, they qualify for participation in the presidential debates which begin in September. A popular vote showing anywhere near 15 percent would likely deny both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump the required number of 270 Electoral College votes to win the White House. President George W. Bush won the Electoral College by 271 votes over Vice President Al Gore (265 votes) during the 2000 election, though Gore had won the popular vote. The last time a president had won the Electoral College while losing the popular vote was in 1888. Following the 12th Amendment process with no Electoral College victor, it would be the current and seated members of the U.S. House of Representatives who would select the president from among the top three vote getters, and the Senate would select the vice president from among the remainder. This could lead to a split ticket in the White House. There is precedent for this as well (second term for Lincoln and Democrat Vice President Andrew Johnson of Tennessee). The Libertarian Party may not cause such pause, hanging chads, or a historic vote by Congress, but even a double digit ballot count in most states would give the party permanent ballot access (as the Libertarians in Georgia already enjoy), giving birth to a third national party. They don’t always win, but as history shows, they often play a significant role in the outcome of elections at pivotal points in our nation’s history. Crane is the senior political analyst with WSB Radio and TV and owns his own full-service communications consulting firm, CSI Crane, in Decatur. More information at www.CSICrane.com

Travel Tales: Surprise Symphony in Nicaragua By Pam Walker Costa Rica has always been a favorite of Adventure Travel, but just to the north and across the border in Nicaragua is a secret waiting to explode. Little was known about Nicaragua until the development of one of the newest darlings of the luxury travel market, the Mukul Resort. Not only is there a fabulous hotel and villas, but there are lots available to build a dream home. Costa Rica is overbuilt with condominiums and subdivisions to attract Americans at high prices. But Nicaragua is nature in the best form. Best of all, everything in Nicaragua is about two hours distance from Managua, its capital. Historic Granada, a mere thirty minute ride from Managua, sets the tone of everything Latin American. Lovely buildings from the 18th century dot the streets and carts with horses pull products to market. Just a short boat ride from Granada is the lovely Jicaro Resort, set on an island in the middle of Lake Managua, the biggest lake in Central America. The lake boasts over 365 islands, of which some are for sale for the right Continued on page 20

Sports Talk: Mountain Park Senior Men’s Tennis Group Has Fun On and Off the Court By Kim Hill Rafael Cintron is the newest and, at 67, one of the youngest members of a senior men’s tennis group that plays at Mountain Park. Talmadge Woodman is the oldest at 89 and was once Georgia Champion for Seniors over 65. Bill Reagin, 76, is a dentist who sometimes offers free dental services if his partner helps him to win. Everyone has played competitive tennis in ALTA (Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association) and USTA (United States Tennis Association), but 82-yearold Fred Surmann admits, “There comes a time when you realize that it is difficult to compete against the youngsters that are running your butt off on the courts. So one of the guys founded the senior group and we decided we were going to play for fun.” There are about twenty-eight members on the roster, and twelve to sixteen of them play regularly. They come out on Fridays, and the “better” players come out on Monday as well. “When you see all our group play,” says Fred, “there are four or five guys in the group that the rest of us can only hope will fall down.” The group was started in 1990 by Tip Goza, an Avondale High School coach. Bill Mann was one of the founding members, and he still comes to the social events. After playing in Tucker’s Henderson Park for a few years, the group moved to the Tucker Racquet Club, a Continued on page 20

Skin So Simple: Acne Breakouts

Educational Entertainment

Cuddle

By Lisa Clinkscale Porter, Aesthetician Anyone who has ever had an acne breakout knows that it can be a nightmare. Acne can show up anytime on anyone if for no other reason than stress. It can also start in one of three stages in our lives: as a teenager, as an adult, or during peri-menopause or menopause. So, if you are one of the lucky ones who has not had any acne problems up to this point, take very good care of your skin so you can avoid it later. If you are breathing, then it’s hard to avoid stress. The best thing to do is find a release for it like exercise, meditation, or maybe some kind of hobby. The other major factors that cause acne is the growth of bacteria, clogged pores, accumulation of dead skin cells, and an overproduction of oil. There is always the possibility that your acne is being triggered by your diet: sugar, dairy, caffeine, fried foods, chocolate, or even a lack of water. Outside triggers can be hair products transferring to the skin at night from your pillow case. The best way to avoid this is to either tie your hair up at night or change your pillow case frequently. There is no cure for acne. The idea is to treat and clear acne breakouts and then prevent new ones from forming. This requires addressing the major factors mentioned above by first getting a deep pore cleansing facial that will get rid of all dead skin cells and excess oil in the pores. Alpha Hydroxy Acid should also be used during the facial to get rid of any bacteria in the pores. The skin should flake and peel a bit, which is a necessary step so you know the cells are being turned over. An at-home skin regimen will allow you to maintain the clarity of your skin from day to day to prevent break-outs. Remember, the first thing people see when they look at you is your face. So I ask, “How does your skin look?” Lisa Clinkscale Porter is owner of Unique Face Options, Inc. More information at http://www.uniquefaceoptions.com/

Character Counts: Up Close with NG3 and Brookwood HS By Natalie King Cheryl Maafoh, a rising senior and lacrosse player at Brookwood High School, is a dedicated volunteer in the community and an advocate to her peers. She spent her summer volunteering at Mountain Park United Methodist with the Lunches of Love Program, and she aspires to become a missionary. Cheryl also serves as a huge promoter for female athletes, becoming more involved with NG3, the non-profit that offers relationally-driven character development and chaplain services to high school athletics. In an interview, Cheryl explains how NG3 has helped to shape and prepare her to live out her dream of serving others. OT: What is your favorite memory from NG3? CM: During our first huddle meeting, we shared communion and washed each other’s hands as an act of service to each other. This stands out to me because I had never experienced such a holy moment with my peers. I really enjoyed the act of washing hands and being committed with my huddle group to go beyond ourselves to see the needs of others. OT: How is your life different since working with NG3? CM: I’ve gained a different attitude towards my peers and my relationships. I am constantly thinking about how I can change the community and those I interact with for the glory of God. For example, I had a friend who was having constant “boy drama” and she asked me for advice. She was really upset and wanted someone to help her figure how to move past it. I encouraged her to really think about the character of the guys she dated and to learn from them. I asked her to think about characteristics she wanted in a boyfriend and future husband. She actually responded well to my idea and comes to me for advice more often. OT: What would you tell someone who doesn’t know about NG3? CM: NG3 is an amazing group that gives direction on how to have godly character and provides friends who will support you. It’s so much fun to be part of a group that wants to live for Christ in an environment that’s so against it. It’s great to be able to do this while at the same time relating it to our everyday lives. I have enjoyed having Ms. Natalie as my mentor to give me a new perspective on life. She really listens and really cares for us. More information at http://ng3.org/

Up Close with Lilburn Arts Alliance By Tony Socci OTM: How did the Lilburn Arts Alliance get started and what was the first event? LAA: The Lilburn Arts Alliance (LAA) was organized in 2013 as a brainchild of Mayor Johnny Crist and mural artist Sonny Franks. They began organizing exhibits for local artists to show their work. OTM: Where were these exhibits held? LAA: They were first held in downtown Lilburn in an empty restaurant space, then the exhibits moved to City Hall. After a large attendance at the first three art exhibits, it appeared that Lilburn was ready to support their local artists. OTM: Can you tell me who headed this project? LAA: Custom furniture designer Alan Harp was the first president and artist Peggy Sullens followed. Next, Andy Triemer took over the reins and is the current president. OTM: Where and when does the LAA meet, and how frequently? LAA: The LAA currently meets every other month on the second Wednesday, at the WynneRussell House in Lilburn. We also have workshops scheduled throughout the year. OTM: Where do you show member artists’ works? LAA: We organize showings of our artwork whenever and wherever we can. Earlier this year the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Gwinnett was the site for artists to show their work for two months, and in October we will have a booth at Lilburn Daze to show our work and to let the public know about our group. OTM: What are your plans for the future of Lilburn Arts Alliance? LAA: Long-range plans for the group could include a permanent space for a gallery and for artists to work, and for classes for kids and adults, too. OTM: What genres of art are represented? LAA: Members of the group include painters and photographers, pottery and glass workers, and we’re open to anyone interested in the arts to join in. OTM: Can you give us a schedule of upcoming activities? LAA: Lilburn Arts Alliance Fall Events Carolyn Wright, co-owner of the Lona Gallery in Lawrenceville, is the featured speaker at the Continued on page 24

A couple of years ago I was driving to work one morning. I had the music on the radio, my window was rolled down, and the sunroof was open. It was one of those mornings where I had a good time with God in my devotional time, a good time with my wife before she left for work, and a good time with my children before they got on the school bus. I was having such a good day, but then I got to a stop light and everything changed. As I looked at the car in front of me, I noticed a bumper-sticker that read: “I love God, I love my wife, and the rest of you can go to hell.” My first reaction was probably similar to yours. I chuckled. But after a couple of seconds, I started thinking about what those words really meant. “OK. I’m not God; I’m not his wife; so he just sent me to hell.” Do you think that is possible? Do you think we can live a life in which we love God, yet hate the world? The short answer and actually the only answer to this question is NO. God is love, and God has demonstrated that love in everything he does. The central theme of the entire Bible is the self-revelation of God’s love. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus are the greatest expressions of that love. But, not only is God love, he has created you and me with the capacity to love others. So loving one another is more than just a nice idea; it’s a reflection and manifestation of God’s love in our lives. Next time I see that bumper sticker, I plan on telling the driver that it’s spiritually impossible to love God and hate the world. It may not be easy (and trust me, I know a lot of people that are hard to love), but loving others is a possibility that should become our responsibility. So let your love be love. price. Lovely pool and waterfront surroundings set the mood for the charming two story bungalows where you can wake in the morning to a symphony of howler monkeys and birds, along with the mooing of cows and roosters in the distance. An hour from Granada toward the coast is the quaint hippie town of San Juan del Sur. Reminiscent of Guatemala’s Panajachel, San Juan del Sur is where retired “hippies” from the 1960s live the good life on the beach, along with tons of young people who have discovered its rich surfing life. Playa Hermosa has some fantastic surfing with ten foot high curls that roll in on a regular basis. Stay at Morgan’s Rock Resort, high on the hills overlooking the beach, for fabulous hiking and great birding. Tented cabins are so deluxe that they make the camps on African safari’s look simple by comparison. Look no further for the newest Central American destination. private organization. Bill liked it there because they had clay courts. A fee increase sent the group packing again, and they settled in Stone Mountain at the Olympic Park courts, where they played until it closed. Fred explains, “We come out to get fresh air, companionship, and hear a few jokes.” Charlie Myers, known as the jokester of the group, adds, “I’m still pouring them out, by request.” Charlie drives from Walton County to be part of this fun-loving, yet dedicated group. Talmadge has a pacemaker, another member has played wearing a chemotherapy bag, and yet another kept coming out after developing Alzheimer’s. “It is a method for all of us to keep ourselves young,” says Fred. “The unfortunate thing out of that is we lose our wives earlier than we should be doing.” There are several widowers in the group, and they agree it would be a good thing if there were a similar organization for women. “So what is happening is, we keep losing members faster than we can gain them,” Fred continues. “They either move away or they are so decrepit that they don’t play anymore.” “It’s been two years for me, since I had my knee done. I haven’t been able to get back, and probably won’t,” laments Bill Mann. “But they have a picnic and a Christmas party, and I get to see everybody then.” Members pay $4 a week: $3 goes to the county for use of the courts and $1 goes to a fund for the annual picnic and Christmas party. The group reminisces when the Christmas parties were held at Shoney’s on Mountain Industrial, and members would meet out back to consume home brew and scuppernong wine before going in, but now parties are catered and held at a member’s clubhouse. “We’re now very civilized,” says Fred. The group does not advertise, but members say they invite anyone they run into who is over 55 and wants to play tennis. “There is no criticizing,” says Rafael. “One guy said ‘I can’t go there, I’ll be embarrassed.’ I said ‘You want to see embarrassment?’ I mean we do try to play and make great shots and win, but there is no pressure.” Fred says of Rafael, “It’s a nice thing that the newcomer to our group recognized that we need more newcomers.” “I honestly can say that from the very beginning I felt so welcome,” says Rafael. “This is such a nice group and I admire people like Talmadge who is 89. We need to keep it going as a service to the community. Old people can come and all you have to do is play.” For more information, call Rafael Cintron at 770-923-4418.

Coach Talk: Football with Eric Godfree of Parkview & Philip Jones of Brookwood By Our Town Staff OTM: How do you feel going into this football season and what are your expectations? Coach Jones BHS: I feel very optimistic about the coming season based on all of the hardwork our players have invested this off season and the commitments they have made to each other. Coach Godfree PHS: Our team has really come together in terms of pulling for each other and being great teammates. That alone, gives us a good feeling about the season. We always have high expectations and our goal is to have a home playoff game. OTM: What qualities are most important to you in your student/ Godfree athletes? Coach Jones BHS: Selflessness and love for their teammates. Grit (passion and perseverance), all in commitment, relentless effort, joyfulness. Coach Godfree PHS: Work Hard and Be Respectful. We talk and act out these two qualities all the time. OTM: What is your favorite memory from playing/coaching in the Brookwood vs. Parkview football rivalry? Coach Jones BHS: As a player, beating Parkview in 1996 in the quarterfinals. As a coach, beating them in 2003 and ending their 46 game winning streak. Coach Godfree PHS: We didn’t get to play Brookwood my Junior or Senior year, so my personal favorite memory from playing them was on the JV team. It was when I played quarterback and I had the opportunity Jones to throw a touchdown and run for two touchdowns. We beat them on the scoreboard, but I think they won the physical battle. I had a black eye, thigh bruise, and busted lip after that game. OTM: What do you admire most about the other head coach and/or program? Continued on page 24

upon Camp Creek when her grandchildren began to attend the school back in 2004, and she decided to start volunteering and substitute teaching there. For a couple of years, she also substitute taught at various schools throughout the Gwinnett area, though now she limits herself to Camp Creek and volunteering at two other schools her grandbabies attend: Fernbank Elementary and The Friends School of Atlanta in DeKalb. Draper has been volunteering and substitute teaching at Camp Creek for twelve years now, and she loves it a little more every day. “The best thing about being a substitute teacher is the fact that I get to interact with kids on every grade level,” Draper said. “It’s so much fun to engage with them. It gives me something to do, and it’s something I love. I get to do all the fun parts without all the extra work at home,” she laughed. As a volunteer, Draper helps out in many classrooms at Camp Creek, designing bulletin boards and creating different lessons for various classes and grade levels. Of course, she added, she pulls some of her teaching inspirations from Pinterest, but now that the school year is back in swing, when she isn’t creating boards or lesson plans, she is volunteering in the cafeteria. “With the redistricting that took place earlier this year, we’ve gained an additional 250 students, putting our numbers over 1200, so it’s really hectic and busy right now, but we’ve gotten off to a good start,” she said. With that many additional students, Draper has quite a few substitute jobs lined up over the next couple of months. “There is always someone there who needs help,” she said, “and since I love what I do, I jump on every opportunity I am offered.” When Draper isn’t volunteering, she is writing children’s books, playing with her three dogs, Kali Fornia, Sunny Delight, and Pablo Picasso, traveling, or spending time with her family, which she admits is her true happy place. She has visited every continent except for Antarctica and South America (which she plans to rectify soon), but always comes home to her loving Lilburn community. “I will always have a special place in my heart for the Lilburn community, especially Camp Creek,” Draper said. “The school has provided me the opportunity to make strong, lasting friendships, and I truly feel I am making a difference in someone’s life each and every day.”

Coach Talk: BHS and PHS Football

Continued from page 21

Coach Jones BHS: I admire Eric’s commitment to his faith, his passion for building men of character, and his infectious positive energy and optimism. Coach Godfree PHS: Philip is a man of God who wants to see his players succeed just as much off the field as they do on the field. He teaches his players how to play the game right and how to be a better citizen, husband one day, father one day, etc. I would be honored if my own son were to play for him or his brother. OTM: What do you tell your kids to expect when they play their Five Forks Football Rival? Coach Jones BHS: We will always get Parkview’s best effort, so we expect it to be a tough, passionate, 48-minute battle. Coach Godfree PHS: We don’t have to say much. Our kids grow up knowing about the rivalry with Brookwood and what it means. It has such a great history and tradition. 1910 Public House Continued from page 5 The local community is always at the core of the 1910 Public House planning. They are avid supporters of the Providence Christian school athletic programs, where they not only feed the players’ meals between games, but they provide the food for the concession stand as well. They sponsor swim teams and take part in local food events including those in Lilburn City Park and the Taste of Brookwood. Local schools benefit from the Spirit Nights, where the restaurant gives the scheduled school a percentage of evening sales. The Tiberias are thrilled with the number of “regulars” who visit the restaurant three and four times each week. They listen to these customers, and tweak their practice so that people leave feeling like their visit was “worth it.” They truly want to uphold the ideals behind the name “Public House.” In fact, behind their restaurant is a parcel of green space where they have potential plans to start a Bocce league, so folks can come enjoy a pint and a crab cake, then spend outdoor time with friends. According to Anthony, “We’ve come a long way, and we have some great plans for our locals. We love this area!” More information at www.1910publichouse.com

Pet Perch: Pokémon GO… With a Dog By Terie Hansen Pokémon GO is all the rage these days. Unless you don’t listen to the radio, don’t use social media, don’t watch TV, or you live under a rock, then you have heard about Pokémon GO – a game that is played on your smart phone as you search for mythical creatures known as Pokémon at PokéStops (places where a Pokémon can be found) and then attempt to catch the Pokémon waiting there. Maybe you’ve seen players stopped on the street or in a park, staring intently at their phones in search of the nearest Pokémon, and then suddenly they are furiously swiping their phone screens in an effort to “catch” a Pokémon. One of the goals of the inventors of Pokémon GO is to get people out exploring and moving. Their tag line is “Get Up and Go.” Well, if you are one of these Pokémon GO players, why not kill two birds with one stone by walking your dog while playing the game? Think about it. This is a great opportunity to exercise and socialize your pup, and it could help curb negative behaviors your dog may be exhibiting. We know that dogs, like people, need and in fact are happier and healthier when they get a routine dose of exercise. It makes them feel good. If you don’t own a dog, seek out your local shelter and volunteer to walk one of their pups. They always need volunteers. You will be having a blast while helping a dog in need. Maybe the shelter has a PokéStop that harbors a rare Pokémon! Remember to pay attention to where you are walking and to your surroundings in order to keep everyone safe. Hey, who knows? Maybe the universe will reward your good karma by putting an elusive Porygon within your grasp! At the very least, you might just meet your new best friend. Terie Hansen Owner of Good Dog!
