Feeling Rundown?....Read Jenny’s Story Before starting the program with Dr. Gravante I was seriously struggling with my stomach problems and losing weight. With these symptoms came other problems that I struggled with daily, such as migraines, acid reflux, stomach pain and not being able to fit into my clothes. I was getting tired of trying to eat healthy and exercise, yet never feeling physical or mental change. After reading Our Town Magazine and finding similar stories to mine, I decided that Dr. Gravante may be my last resource. It’s been two months on Dr. Gravante’s program and I have lost weight and my stomach feels normal again. My migraines have finally subsided and my heart problems, cough and congestion has almost fully gone away. I am amazed with how a simple nutritious diet and the right supplements can make you feel like a brand new person. I could never thank Dr. Gravante enough for the time and care she has put into my needs to help me feel and look better. Everyone should try this program, because unlike diets and prescription drugs, this really works! For the first time in several years, I actually feel younger and healthy again! I am truly amazed at how life changing the program has turned out to be for me! Having energy to outlast an entire day, allows me to enjoy my day to the fullest, and still have energy left for the afternoon. If you can relate to this than you shouldn’t hesitate in exploring this better lifestyle! Nothing should be holding us back from living a healthy and fulfilled life….Why waste another day? Go ahead, and start now!

Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of Lilburn’s 1910 Public House Restaurant By Heidi Campbell Less than a year ago, a new restaurant founded on the principles of sustainability opened its doors in downtown Lilburn. The 1910 Public House, which flawlessly juxtaposes modern décor over a historic base, offers patrons “made-from-scratch” Southern cuisine, a full bar, and a market which will soon offer growlers to go. The restaurant is housed in a building that dates back to the 1890s when Lilburn was known as McDanielsville. During renovations the owners insisted on keeping not only the old brick wall, but the original floors and ceiling of what was once a hardware store. Hoping to find a name that would have local significance, Tony Tiberia, who owns the restaurant with his wife Jennifer, recalls spending hours looking for the right name. “We knew we wanted a Public House because, back in the day, there was always one public house in town where everybody met to enjoy a family meal or a game of cards.” They decided to go with the 1910 Public House. “We realized that 1910,” Tiberia reveals, “was the year that McDanielsville was renamed Lilburn. The charm of the 1910 Public House stems, however, not only from the building’s rich history, but also from the vision of supporting local and regional farms, bakeries, and breweries. “We are unique,” Tiberia reasons, “because we make everything from scratch using fresh, local ingredients. We are a farm-to-table restaurant, offering seasonal selections.” There is something for every diet on the menu. The main

chef, Chris Kearny, always plans a vegan dish and a vegetarian option, and the owners recently started carrying gluten-free bread from a local baker. They carefully select their produce, local ingredients, and, particularly, their meats. “The twentyperson wait staff samples the food to best guide the diners. “Product knowledge is a priority for us,” insists Tiberia. “When a customer asks, ‘How’s the pork,’ we don’t want our server to just say, ‘It’s good.’ We want them to be able to describe it, to say why they like it, to tell them it is a thick cut. We want them to share that it comes from a pork producer who is thirty miles away.” Although the menu changes with the season, there are certain popular items that have found their forever home on the menu, including the crab cakes, the pimento cheese, and the fresh chicken salad. “We will always keep the same basic proteins on our menu,” assures Tiberia, “so there will always be a pork dish and a fish option. We will just rotate out the sides to include what is fresh for the season.” The Market, which adjoins the restaurant, serves a quick meal on the run. Open daily at 8:00 a.m., locals can stop in to enjoy coffee, biscuits, and bagels. “At lunchtime,” describes Tiberia, “the Market becomes more of a café. We have a handful of sandwiches that come with a bag of chips. People can eat in or take their food to go.” In the next month, the Market space will house a brand new growler station. Currently, the restaurant has four beers on tap. Customers, however, have frequently asked why their beer selection is so limited. Selection will not be a problem in

the coming weeks. Tiberia shares excitedly that, in time for football season, “We are having thirty to forty taps put in. We will have a beer bar where customers can come sit down; have a pint, then grab a growler to go. A good third of the taps will be local Georgia brewers.” On top of being a local gathering choice for locals, the 1910 Public House participates in events including Food Truck Tuesdays, the Lilburn Daze Festival, the Taste of Lilburn, the Taste of Brookwood, and the National Night Out. They hope to support local schools by hosting Spirit Nights, and they want to offer up their space to host art exhibits from local high school art students. They sponsored five deserving local families during their first holiday season, and they plan to continue that tradition. “I would say,” Tiberia shares, “that we give 10-20% of our proceeds back to the local schools and churches to help support them and pay for things that they need.” With future plans for take-home dinners, more live music, and a “back deck” expansion, the 1910 Public House has established itself as an important part of the local Lilburn community. Community Member Spotlight:

Burke & Julie Allen By Stacye Carroll Burke and Julie Allen attended Five Forks Middle School at the same time. When asked if that’s where sparks flew first, Burke jokes, “Oh no! She thought I was an idiot, and twenty-four years of marriage has verified that fact.” So it may not have come as a big surprise when Burke woke Julie up at two in the morning to tell her he wanted to start his own business. According to Burke, Julie was very supportive of the idea. So supportive that she joined him as CFO and, a few years later, left her job with Triad Mechanical to work full-time for NovoLogic, a communications consulting group. Burke describes Julie as “the heart and soul of our business.” Entrepreneurship affects the whole family, and working with a spouse presents another set of challenges. “You have to set boundaries,” says Burke. Early on, their efforts to not bring business home were hampered by the fact that their house doubled as an office. Eventually, the business moved to the square in Lawrenceville, and Cornerstone at NovoLogic was launched. The Allens are glad to be part of the revitalization currently taking place in downtown Lawrenceville. They are also pleased to have

S t u d i o

the opportunity to assist the growth of local non-profits by providing meeting space and advertising for events. Groups such as the 315 Project, the Georgia Christian Business Network, and New City Church meet at Cornerstone several times a week. Once a decathlete at the University of Georgia, Burke says he now experiences sports through their children. Taylor, the oldest, is on the golf team and an Academic All American at the University of North Georgia. Erika is a sophomore who plays volleyball and basketball at Brookwood, and their son, Macade, enjoys soccer and both water and snow skiing. Burke enjoys coaching youth sports where he says he learned patience and humility. As a Resident Writer, Burke contributes a monthly article to BEALEADER, an organization that holds weekly Tweet chats. Burke’s Twitter Bio reads “Follower of Christ, Husband, Father, Entrepreneur, Innovator, Leader, GA Bulldog, Brookwood Bronco,” and while he says he didn’t put a lot of thought into it at the time, those labels accurately represent his focus. A complete description of Burke and Julie Allen wouldn’t be complete, though, without one more title, “Community Asset.” More information at: http://www.novologic.com/.

SEP Love your lawn, all year long.

Fall is the time for core aeration and

“Annuity” is not a Four Letter Word By Jeff Hayes The concept of annuities actually dates back to the Roman Empire; and some form of annuity has been commercially available in America since the early 1800s. Unfortunately, most people still think of annuities based on what was offered 25 or 30 years ago. Much has changed since then. Annuities are issued by life insurance companies; but they are, in a way, the exact opposite of life insurance. With life insurance, you are insuring the financial security of others in the event that you die. With an annuity, you are protecting your assets for as long as you are alive. Look at life insurance combined with annuities as your personal hedge fund, providing protection for your family when you die, and protection for your assets while you are living. The most popular annuities are known as FIA’s, or Fixed Indexed Annuities. Most have two very important benefits to help you protect your life savings: Annual LockIn and Annual Reset. This means that your earnings are “locked in” and can never be taken away, and that the base from which your future earnings are calculated is “reset” to the current (anniversary date) level. Even though some financial broadcast personalities state that they do not like annuities, they also state that twice during the previous decade annuities accomplished exactly what they were supposed to: they protected your assets, and you did not lose money. Don’t be one of those who suffers the frustration of not protecting at least a portion of your assets from the roller coaster market ride that may lie ahead. The emotional pain brought on by the fear and insecurity of the current economy is both unhealthy and unnecessary. You must be the one to insure that everything possible is done to protect your assets, and secure your future. Jeff Hayes is the president of Serenity Financial and Insurance, Inc. Tips for Teachers to Gain Students’ Attention

New Team Development Training Available

By Carol C. Wood A student’s attention can be difficult to obtain, especially in a culture of social media and technology. Here are a few suggestions to help maintain focus and attention: u Greet students warmly. Stand in the doorway or in front of the classroom when they arrive, making eye contact with each student and acknowledging his/her arrival. u Have an opening line for the start of each lesson, similar to a topic sentence in a paragraph to capture interest and attention. Give students a reason to want to listen. u Use names when asking questions about the material you are presenting. “The branches of the government, Kim, are?” “Mark, what equation would you set-up to find the length of the hypotenuse?” “The number of chambers of the heart, Allison, is what?” u Walk around the room and maintain eye contact. u Interject various partner or small group exercises to make learning enjoyable. u Create and play games on the topic being presented. u Use your personality and tell a joke or two, wear clothing or a hat that relates to what you are teaching, and/or play appropriate music in the background that fits the topic. u Ask short and/or thought provoking questions to maintain attention. u Have students create a mind map of what they have learned at the end of class. u Dim the lights and have a “movie and popcorn day” by showing a topic-related DVD. u Move the class to a different location of the school on occasion. Be sure to have permission from the school’s administration. u Change student seating periodically. u Rearrange the classroom a couple of times during the semester to change the angle at which students view your presentation.

The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team A journey for intact teams based on Patrick Lencioni’s book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and the DiSC behavior tool. The foundation is that the single most untapped competitive advantage is teamwork.

Someday By Jane Bishop, Life Coach & Speaker We all have a Someday. Often, the word has infiltrated our vocabulary to the point that the brain processes it as an actual future date. When I recently polled a group of friends about their Someday, I received the following: “Someday, I will… Start exercising. Get more organized. Retire. Be able to do what I want to do. Take that dream trip to Alaska. Understand my daughter. Organize all our family pictures. Hope to see myself as God sees me. Stop saying someday and do what I was going to do yesterday today.” Check your calendar. Where is Someday? Whether you prefer to plan every part of your day or choose to go with the flow, Someday will not show up. It doesn’t exist. Yet, it occupies valuable space in our thinking. It consumes energy without producing tangible results.

Who we are: We are a not-for-profit physical therapy clinic affiliated with the Mercer University Department of Physical Therapy. Our clinicians have extensive backgrounds, experience, training, and certifications.

Introducing our newest therapist Dr. Clarence Holmes, PT, DPT 3001 Mercer University Drive Davis Building, Suite 106 Atlanta, Georgia 30341 Phone: 678-547-6439 Email: Clapp_DA@mercer.edu

What we offer: Manual Therapy including Dry Needling, Neuromuscular Re-education, Therapeutic Exercise, Post-operative Care, Spinal Care, Amputee Rehabilitation, Upper Extremity/Hand Therapy, Gait Analysis, Balance Testing & Fall Prevention, and Vestibular Rehabilitation

Someday keeps us in neutral, unable to move in any direction. Someday may even hinder us from being responsible. Continually waiting for Someday comes with a cost. It may cost better health, realized dreams, clarity, contentment, living4ward. How can you begin to remove the Someday embedded in your vocabulary? Consider this: start and replace. Start with a different “day” word: Monday, Tuesday, today, etc. and replace Someday with that word. That simple replacement begins to put the thought, idea, or dream on the calendar to become a reality. For a long time, whenever I passed Rita’s Italian Ice, I would think, “Someday I will stop and try that.” Recently, I replaced Someday with Today and enjoyed an island fruit Italian ice! Simple pleasure! Significant lesson! Share your “start and replace” story with Jane: jane@takethenextstepcct.com or www. facebook.com/takethenextstepcct. SE Urgent Care: A Fine Alternative By: Rachael Brice The national average wait time for an emergency room visit is six hours. Roughly 14-27 % of these visits could be cared for by an urgent care center instead, thus having the potential to save $4.4 billion dollars in the healthcare industry per year. Southeast Urgent Care is the first urgent care facility to open in Snellville, Ga., though it is just one of 9,000 urgent care facilities in the U.S. The center treats 40-60 patients per day, and handles a variety of ailments including non-life threatening illnesses, sprains and strains, sports related injuries, simple fractures and dislocations, and burns. They can also address cuts and scrapes requiring stitches and complete physical examinations for athletes and corporate patients. Hearing and vision screening can also be performed. Mike Albright, marketing manager for Southeast Urgent Care, has been with the team since shortly after its opening three years ago. “We never know what is coming through the door,” he remarked, “but we are always prepared for what does. No matter the situation, we strive to bring fast and friendly care to all patients for a healthier community.” Not only is Southeast Urgent Care a minor emergency and occupational medicine clinic, but it can also serve as an alternative to a primary care physician when that doctor is unavailable or has a full schedule. However, because patients may not see the same physician every time, urgent care is not a replacement for the relationship that patients build with their family doctor. Southeast Urgent Care treats children as young as two-months old, all the way up to those who are elderly. With a small staff of doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, patients are ensured a quick and easy visit to the clinic. Convenience and quality care for all patients are top priorities for Southeast Urgent Care. Walk-ins are welcome at the center, or patients can make an appointment using the ZipPass program on the facility’s website. This online tool allows patients to bypass the line and skip right to the front. Compared to the ER or a primary care physician, Southeast Urgent Care is significantly less expensive, and the average visit time is an hour or less. “Urgent care works really well in situations where you’re suddenly sick or hurt and need immediate care without a long wait time,” Albright said. The clinic accepts most types of insurance. However, they do not accept Medicaid or its state-sponsored derivatives. They do not treat life- threatening or limb-threatening emergencies such as chest pain or a heart attack, stroke or stroke-like symptoms, car accidents, and broken bones with the bone protruding through the skin. These conditions need to be seen at a local hospital ER. Southeast Urgent Care has a good relationship with Eastside and Gwinnett Medical Center and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The clinic can refer patients to these or other facilities to provide them with the care they need. Southeast Urgent Care is heavily involved in the community as well. The clinic participates in many local festivals throughout the year, and administers free blood pressure and blood sugar testing to anyone who is interested. They will also offer discount flu shots during the fall festival season. October will be a busy month for them as they travel to a few different festivals including, Lilburn days on Oct. 11, the Loganville Autumn Heritage Festival on Oct. 18, and the Snellville Fall Festival on Oct. 25. Southeast Urgent Care is open Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. They are located at 2118 Scenic Highway Suite H & I, Snellville, GA 30078. Catching up with Kathy Coots: Cover story August 2013

We’re Here to Help There’s no problem too big or too small for us to handle.

Find the hope, vision, courage and will to succeed

By Stacye Carroll Last August Our Town readers were introduced to Kathy Coots, President of Coots & Company, a proud part of Keller Williams Realty-Atlanta Partners. We caught up with Kathy one Sunday afternoon as she was leaving an appointment, illustrating that her success in real estate – in a time when the market has been shaky, at best – is due to hard work. “Getting into the real estate business in 2006, when the market was beginning to shift downward, was probably the best thing I could have done!” says Kathy. “It taught me to work hard and to look for ways to do business by going back to the basics. I think it helps, too, that I believe in our community and the surrounding area.” So far 2014 is proving to be even more successful than 2013, which was a year of accolades for Coots & Company. Kathy was ranked 10th in sales activity out of 4, 307 agents, based on Georgia MLS statistics in Gwinnett County. She was awarded RealTrends America’s Best Real Estate Agent – Georgia Teams (2013-2014). Atlanta Magazine also named Kathy a Five-Star Professional for Snellville (2013 & 2014). While honored by all these awards, Kathy feels the second award is particularly meaningful because it is based on client feedback. Last November Kathy’s husband, Darien, left his job of thirty-four years to join Coots & Company as a licensed agent for Keller Williams Realty. The couple’s daughter, Kailyn, plans to join the family business as well. Kailyn made Dean’s List while attending UGA this summer as part of an early admission program, and she is returning this fall as a real estate major. Kathy and her husband recently purchased a lake house, an experience that left her believing that real estate agents should purchase a home every few years so they’ll know, firsthand, what their clients go through. She hopes the idea of a weekend at the lake will occasionally lure her daughter away from Athens, and she looks forward to spending more time there herself in years to come. Kathy’s quick to say, though, that the family has no plans to leave Gwinnett any time soon. The couple’s son lives just a few miles away, and they all love this community. Retirement is not in Kathy’s foreseeable future. “One of the great things about selling real estate is you can do it at any age!” Kathy Coots is the owner of Coots & Company a Keller Williams Realty agent. Never Stop Learning! By Julie Mills-Watson Never stop learning! With school in session, I am reflecting on how important it is to be lifelong learners. Information changes over time. Remember when it was alright to smoke? Now we know it leads to cancer! We never wore seatbelts as kids! Now we know buckling up saves lives. The same goes for our health. Unless we are learning new “stuff,” we may still be chasing the latest diet fad, bouncing when we stretch, or taking antibiotics every time we get the sniffles. What do these things have in common? They can seriously harm us! So HOW do we educate ourselves? Here are some excellent websites for reference: fitbit.com, mercola.com, PPNF.org, and, my favorite, bodyofhealthandlife.com. Fitbit.com offers information on a wristband that links with your computer or mobile phone to track your calorie intake, sleep patterns, and exercise output. It is an excellent tool to help you keep your “lifestyle” where you want it. Mercola.com is fantastic for medical advice, natural remedies, and nutritional solutions. Dr. Mercola is a licensed osteopathic and a board-certified family medicine doctor. This site partners with similar organizations to bring you the research and science behind good health. PPNF.org, the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation (PPNF), is a non-profit comprehensive nutritional site to educate us on what is in our foods. This site is highly recommended by Karen Harrison, the nutritional counselor at Body of Health, whose teachings reflect this valuable information. BodyofHealthandLife.com is a great place to learn about therapeutic massage, lymphatic therapies, scar therapies, and other well-being topics. “Hurt less, Heal quicker and Have a better quality of life” is our mission, and education is the first place to start. This month, try one new, healthy food. Practice reading cereal, cracker, and frozen food labels. Do one new activity, and feel the changes in your muscle tone. Incorporate one new healthy remedy, and read something to improve your health. This is your health, your body, your life – and you’re worth it! Julie Mills-Watson is owner of Body of Health and Life. Mercer Physical Therapy By Rachael Brice Mercer Physical Therapy Clinic, working in conjunction with the Department of Physical Therapy at Mercer University, has been helping residents of Atlanta get back on their feet since October 2010. The clinic was created to provide the all-physical-therapists teaching faculty an opportunity to continue to see patients in addition to their teaching responsibilities. Mercer Physical Therapy Clinic was also created as a center of clinical excellence in physical therapy and to perform clinical research. The staff strongly believes in thoroughly educating patients, and provides the best possible patient-centered care to the Metro-Atlanta community. Currently, the clinic has three primary clinicians who see patients full-time, and five additional clinicians who see patients on an as-needed basis. Dr. McMahon and Dr. Nelson, two of the clinic’s primary clinicians, have over thirty-five years of combined experience in the industry. In addition, the Mercer Physical Therapy program has a faculty with over 100 years of combined experience in physical therapy. The faculty team is available to consult on an as-needed basis. Before a patient can begin therapy, an evaluation is conducted by one of the licensed and highly trained clinicians. After a diagnosis has been made, the clinician and patient work together to create a treatment plan designed to optimize a successful recovery. Bethany Nelson, PT, DPT, an assistant clinical professor, says the goal of the clinic is to help empower each patient so they do not require more therapy than is necessary. “We are teaching them to be independent so they can get back to their lives and daily routine,” she says. Many different types of therapy and rehab are offered, such as manual therapy (including dry needling), neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercise, amputee rehabilitation, hand therapy, balance and fall prevention, post-operative rehabilitation, and vestibular rehabilitation. Neck and back injuries are the most common of all injuries seen at the clinic, and are typically obtained from falls, sports-related pain, overuse injuries, and motor vehicle accidents. However, the clinic treats a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunctions as well. “From the head to the toes, we treat it all,” says Clinic Director and Assistant Clinical Professor Tim McMahon, PT, DPT, OCS. In order to treat such a vast array of injuries, the clinic uses the latest evidence and the wealth of experienced faculty-clinicians within the Department of Physical Therapy. “We believe in using a detailed, patient-centered, problem-solving approach in order to treat each person holistically and individually,” Dr. McMahon says. The clinic treats the general public and typically cares for adults (12 and up), though they are looking to expand their practice to include pediatrics in the coming years. On average, the clinic cares for 20-25 patients per day. Patients are scheduled for thirty to sixty minute visits, depending on the diagnosis and severity of their symptoms. Most major insurances are accepted including Medicare, and affordable options are available for patients with limited insurance coverage. Mercer Physical Therapy Clinic sets itself apart by successfully treating patients with complex problems when other therapies have failed. “We often get referrals from other health care providers when their patient’s fail to respond or have plateaued in their progress,” Dr. McMahon reports. “We often are sought out by health care providers and physical therapists in the Metro Atlanta area when they need their own physical therapy services.” Patients typically are referred by their physician and many patients hear about the clinic through friends and family. “Our clients report that we’re the best kept secret in Atlanta, but we are trying to change that,” Dr. McMahon says. The clinic is located conveniently off both I-85 and I-285 Chamblee Tucker Road exits on the beautiful Mercer University Campus. Parking is free. This puts extreme strain on the heart, and causes abnormal blood clotting and subsequent death to tissue. Normal body temperature for a dog is about 101° F to 102° F. ASFC Outreach: Getting Help, Getting Whole By Kate Daly See a need, fill a need – that could be the new motto for a counseling and outreach group opening its doors in Gwinnett County. The formal name of the group, founded by Angela C. Clark, is ASFC Outreach Therapeutic Counseling Services, LLC. The ASFC stands for Achieving Skills For Change, and that is the heart of what they do. ASFC Outreach started in Conyers a little more than ten years ago with a focus on children. But founder and CEO Clark says she quickly realized that to heal the child, you must treat the whole family. The practice developed a holistic philosophy and grew to encompass and offer a comprehensive range of services. When a person comes to ASFC Outreach, a team of professionals coalesces to create a plan that will best serve, support, and guide the patient onto a path to wholeness. The programs offered range from anger management to drug counseling to nutrition. The staff gets out into the community as well, holding seminars, and parenting and nutrition classes. Clarks says the team at ASFC Outreach will come to you where and when you need help, with whatever you need help in. Language is not a barrier since the staff includes bilingual professionals. The staff says they each have areas close to their hearts. For Clinical Director Coleena Brown (LPC), it’s military veterans. Brown, a licensed professional counselor, is also a proud and patriotic army vet herself. She’s earned her certification to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. ASFC Outreach gets referrals from schools, doctors, and even former patients. They have state and federal contracts. Clark wants her patients to know they are a nationally accredited and A-rated company. The move into Gwinnett came when they realized that more and more referrals to the Conyers office were coming from Gwinnett County. To better serve their growing clientele, ASFC Outreach expanded to include a Lawrenceville office with plans to eventually open offices in Greensboro and Decatur. Clark says their services are summed up in ASFC’s motto, “There is no problem too big or too small. Talk to us, we’re here to help.” To introduce themselves to Gwinnett County, ASFC Outreach will hold an open house on Friday, September 26, from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Gwinnett office located at 1755 North Brown Mill Road, suite 200, Lawrenceville. Some may know Reggie Kelly from his pro football days, playing number 82 tight end on the Atlanta Falcons. But this former NFL player did not take retirement lightly. Reggie and his wife Sheila have always believed in helping children, and what started as a gathering around great food, turned into a business rooted in faith and family tradition. Reggie and Sheila were high school sweethearts from Aberdeen, Mississippi. Reggie grew up around cooking, where his grandmother heavily influenced his love of southern soul food. Her fried chicken and fried fish were Reggie’s favorites. “My grandmother always taught me that the most important ingredient in any recipe is love,” Reggie says. “When I started cooking, I always made sure that people could taste the soul and feel connected to my family.” Reggie and his wife used to host football camps for children in their hometown, and each camp ended with a feast of home-cooked food, just like Reggie’s grandmother would make. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and faith led the Kellys to create their own soul food line, KYVAN Foods. KYVAN stems from his daughter Kyla’s name (Ky-) and his son Kavan’s name (-van). “I also wanted to leave the legacy of my grandmother behind,” says Reggie. The product most inspired by her is the Honey Apple Butter. Since KYVAN foods started, Reggie has gotten support from his Falcon teammates and his faith. “I believe that God has given me talents that I can share with others, from sharing football with fans and sharing the love of good food with my children.” Reggie lives by Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” KYVAN Foods is now being sold at WalMart, Wayfield Foods, and Food Depot. Korean drums, consulates from several foreign countries, global food options, international dance, and a parade of flags from seventy countries are just a few of the highlights at Lilburn’s first International Festival, which hits Lilburn City Park on Saturday, September 13 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Diana Preston, a member of the Lilburn Community Partnership, is coordinating the event with Margot Ashley who works with SafetySmart Lilburn. Preston is excited for the free event. “This is a welcoming venue that will celebrate the diversity of Lilburn,” she says. “There will be something for everyone!” Hosted by the Lilburn Community Partnership, SafetySmart Lilburn, and the City of Lilburn, the event was planned by the Festival Committee, made up of twelve local volunteers. “We’re about getting people out and helping them get more involved in their community,” says Preston, who hopes the event will unite the diverse churches, youth organizations, government agencies, schools, and businesses in the small town of Lilburn. The Opening Ceremony promises to be spectacular: the Parkview High School ROTC will present the colors, and the Berkmar High School Patriot band and chorus will lead the National Anthem and provide music during the International Flag Parade. Volunteers from Lilburn First Baptist Church, who donated their international flag collection, will assist in carrying the flags alongside several official consulates. Local restaurants will be selling international cuisine, soccer and karate programs will host demonstrations, and rows of exhibits will be set up so that people can truly mingle with the local, diverse community. “This is for everybody,” Preston assures. “We’ll have some traditional music. We’ll have different cultures. It will be good for people who don’t get to travel as much as they like. They might get to try some different experiences in food, music, and dance!” Nam Dae Mun International Farmer’s Market, one of the Festival’s presenting sponsors (along with Vida Radio and All State Insurance), will provide a shuttle pick-up spot, along with the First Baptist Church of Lilburn. “We have a plan,” Preston says. “We’ll be putting up yard signs at subdivision entrances, and we’ll be advertising on the three digital billboards in Lilburn. We’re hoping that neighbors will talk about the event and encourage everyone to come out.” More information at www.lilburnevents.com

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Where am I today? What are my goals? How will I achieve them?

What will the stock market do? What can I do to defer taxes? Will I outlive my retirement income? Should I invest for stability, growth, or income?

Chaplains Corner: What Is the Church? By Dr. Paul Ballard When you hear the word “church,” what do you think? More than likely it’s a long way from first century understanding. Most people today see church as a building or a steeple; as a destination that you go to or an event that you sit through. Let’s take a look at the biblical meaning. The word translated “church” in the New Testament is the Greek word ekklesia. It has two parts: Ek, meaning “out of,” and Kaleo, meaning “to call.” The word literally means the “called out ones.” Therefore, church refers not to a building, but to the people God has called out of the world to live holy lives. The church in the book of Acts was a movement of people built around rock-solid convictions that Jesus lived, died, and rose again; that He validated Himself as the promised Messiah, ushered in the Kingdom of God, and called people to repent of their sins and follow Him. This definition attempts to get to the core of the truth that the church has nothing to do with brick and mortar, but everything to do with people and their convictions about Jesus. As the pastor of Mountain Park First Baptist Church, I am constantly asking if we are simply a destination for people to come and sit in for a religious service, or are we are an association of people centered around the powerful gospel message of Jesus as the light in a dark world. Jesus’ call to His church is to teach the life changing gospel of grace message of Jesus Christ, and to be a light in the world! Dr. Paul Ballard is Senior Pastor of Mountain Park First Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, GA. More information at www.mpfbc.org
