On the Cover: On the Surface Gives Customers an Artful Approach to Home Design By Stacye Carroll Patricia Presto has made repurposing into an art form, and she started with her own life. When her marriage ended in 1998, Patricia resolved not to let business interfere with caring for her children, so she set aside her previous career as an event planner for Citicorp and rediscovered a long-held passion for art. When she gave her own home a face lift using faux finish—a painting technique that creates movement and interest—she soon found herself updating the homes of her friends. Word of mouth proved a most effective marketing tool, and On the Surface was founded. Today, On the Surface has expanded its services to include interior and exterior painting, renovation and remodeling, design services, and color consultations. Patricia loves to create “from the ground up,” and she prides herself on being able to supply whatever the clients need through a network of trusted contractors. Patricia has great success with staging homes for sale. Her job is to create a “clean palate” using paint and accessories already present in the home. Recently, a house she staged sold in just one day. Furniture refinishing is another reason many clients choose On the Surface. Patricia particularly enjoys refinishing cabinets. Her clients are pleased as well, especially when they learn that faux finishing costs about one-third as much as new cabinetry. And because Patricia leaves her personal preferences at the door, clients enjoy a finished product that is original, unique, and more in tune with who they are as people. “My job is to listen to what the client wants, and make it happen,” Patricia says. Sometimes a client knows she wants something different but doesn’t know exactly what. In this situation, Patricia may suggest painting an accent wall like the one she painted for Leslie who has used On the Surface to update two of her homes. Particularly appreciated were the sample boards Patricia used to show Leslie exactly what the finished product would look like. “She’s great with color,” Leslie said. “I came to her with
ideas, and she made them better. She takes the time to know what your vision is.” Patricia painted an accent wall in Leslie’s daughter’s bedroom using pink and white paint and stencils. “That is so cool!” is the exclamation Leslie often hears when her daughters’ friends see the wall for the first time. Leslie also called On the Surface to refinish a brick fireplace that was previously painted white. Using faux finish, Patricia recaptured the natural brick color while giving the room the outdoorsy feel Leslie was hoping for. “She has a great business sense but can be uber creative at the same time.” Patricia also enjoys recreating spaces for women who are in “the third phase of life.” This includes women who are divorced, downsizing, or whose children have left home. Whether it’s a living area, home office, or kitchen, On the Surface specializes in helping women create areas where they can express themselves. When asked to name a favorite part of her job, Patricia Presto doesn’t hesitate. “The customers,” she answers. Past clients refer their friends and often call back with other jobs because of the relationship they’ve established with Patricia, who believes “What else can I do for you?” to be one of the most important questions she can ask. You can see examples of Patricia Presto’s work at www.onthesurfacedesign.com or call 404-915-6028 to schedule a free consultation. Goal Setting: A Key Component of Fitness It is important to have a goal, especially in fitness-related endeavors. A goal gives you a point of focus, something to strive for, and a target that enables you to reach out past your current self for a better, future version of you. Why is it so easy to talk ourselves out of doing something? Why do we limit ourselves? Is it a fear of success? The American Council on Exercise recommends using the acronym SMART when setting fitness goals. SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Realistic goal setting is important. But that doesn’t mean you can’t dream big. Set a goal. Accomplish it. Set a new goal. Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep moving forward. You attack your goal in little chunks and progressively increase the workload over time. This might seem like a foreign concept in our world of instant gratification and promises of a quick and easy remedy for what ails you, a world that is on the eternal quest for the magic pill. But there are no magic beans, there, Jack. Good REAL lasting results are worth REAL work. It is so easy to let life get in your way. This is where having a gym/workout buddy comes into play. Having a workout partner who will keep you accountable to your goal, keep you on track, and keep you company, is a precious gift. Goal setting doesn’t have to be restricted to newbies or couch potatoes. The rule applies to athletes of every level. Ultra marathoners and Ironman triathletes are quite serious about goals in their training. My training clients make breakthroughs they never believed possible. These achievements are often stepping stones to bigger and better things. With the right mindset and dedication, the journey to better fitness will become a reality.

Anchor Church was planted in the Grayson area on Ozora Road sixteen years ago. We consider ourselves Grayson’s best-kept secret since we are nestled off the road next to Cooper Elementary on twelve wooded acres. Beginning with three families, we have grown into a vibrant group that has a passion to disciple others to know, love, and serve Christ for the glory of God. We have two worship services on Sunday mornings and community groups located all over the Grayson, Loganville, Snellville, Lawrenceville, and Dacula areas. Because we have a heart for our community, we offer a number of ongoing ministry opportunities: • Free tutoring for Archer High School, McConnell Middle, and Cooper Elementary each Wednesday evening, along with ministering to the students’ families. • A widows’ home repair ministry, providing assistance at no charge for elderly widows. • Movie Nights and Fall Festival events held annually in Grayson City Park. • Free quarterly luncheons for business leaders from Grayson and the surrounding areas to encourage, build relationships, and extend leadership training in a distinctly Christian environment. • A satellite church for Seniors that meets every Sunday and Wednesday at the Laurel Grove Retirement Community, located at Ronald Reagan Parkway and Five Forks Trickum Road, for those who love not having to leave their campus for worship. • A multi-cultural ministry in Clarkston, Georgia known as Proskuneo that provides a School of the Arts to minister to international refugee families. • Various community services that include picking up trash after Grayson Days parades and serving breakfast and lunch each year to the faculty and staff at McConnell Middle and Cooper Elementary. • Mission partnerships in South Africa, Guatemala, and Costa Rica where we helped plant a church in Guapiles. You and your family are invited to experience real biblical community within the community. We love making new friends! Visit us at www.anchorgrayson.org

Ecuador = Love Life! By Pam Walker I love Ecuador. Their new advertising slogan is ECUADOR - LOVE LIFE, a theme that resonates with the people and obviously with me. Ecuador is green and beautiful and full of historic buildings, churches, Incan ruins, and lovely old haciendas. It also boasts twenty-six active volcanos. Yet in all ten of my visits, I have rarely felt a shake or seen an eruption. I love the historic haciendas which have been accepting guests for some years now. By the time you are ready to saddle your horse or ride your mountain bike, the temperatures are nearing 75°F. Ecuador is the land of constant spring, and you can travel from the temperate climate of the mountains to the summer warmth of its beaches in just three hours. On my latest visit, I had a chance to transit the Avenue of the Volcanoes in the brand new Tren Crucero. Complete with elegant dining car, bar car, lounge cars, and a classic-styled Observation Car, the Tren Crucero begins its journey in historic Quito. As the train winds its way through the volcanoes, the Tren Crucero makes stops in small towns and villages along the way. Every night we get to stay in one of the beautiful haciendas that can be found all over the country. Getting up from a cozy bed and coming down to breakfast in front of a roaring fire while gazing at the snow covered Andes, is an experience you will never forget. One scary part of the train ride is called the “Devil’s Nose,” where we drop from 11,000 feet to sea level through a series of switchbacks. The trip ends in Duran, a jumping off spot for Ecuador’s amazing beaches. ECUADOR - LOVE LIFE is a good slogan for this lovely little country with so much to do and so much to see in one small place. But the theme should be “Love Ecuador-Love Life!”

Who’s in Charge at Your House? By Carol C. Wood . Are you sometimes afraid you will make your children angry if you discipline them and/or require responsible, respectful behavior? Are you worried you may cause them emotional harm if you hold them to your expectations and require certain behaviors? Do any of your children refuse to do homework, study for tests, or attend afterschool tutorial sessions, and do they earn grades lower than their abilities? Have your children taken charge of your home? If your answers are yes to any of these questions and you want to regain control of your household, put into practice the following helpful principles: 1) Practice calm, conscious, confident parenting. 2) Practice the self-discipline necessary to remain emotionally balanced in response to your children’s behavior. 3) Change things in small degrees because you can only improve your responses to your children’s behavior a little at a time. 4) Take note of your children’s misconduct without immediately reacting, unless a real and immediate danger exists. 5) Take a good look at your anger and fears because these emotional states indicate there is work you need to do on your own self. 6) Learn how to be firm without being emotional. 7) Communicate your children’s appropriate boundaries by consistently demonstrating respectful, responsible self-discipline, clearly showing the exact behavior you expect, and following through with consequences when patience and words do not work. 8) Be observant and learn how to talk to your children so they will listen. 9) Do not use harsh, angry criticism because it lowers their expectations of themselves, lowers their self-confidence, and fuels their fears, rebellion, and defensiveness, all resulting in even worse behaviors and attitudes. 10) Do not fight with your children. Fighting does not work because when you engage in a frustrating power-struggle with them, you will lose your own power and authority. 11) Do not do too much to protect your children from life’s challenges. Sometimes they learn more by dealing with events without your help or involvement. 12) Remember children learn to behave in the ways that get them what they want. If you give them what they desire when they have been bossy and demanding, you have taught them that these traits satisfy their desires, leading to a disrespect of others. 13) Remember that when bad behavior goes without consequences, your children will feel confused about what is expected of them, and they may even doubt that they are truly cared about, interpreting your leniency as apathy. 14) Develop emotional strength by remaining patient and composed when they express hurt and angry feelings. You cannot teach them self-control when you are losing your own. A few years ago I heard a minister, Dr. Bill Blanchard, present five important points on parenting. He taught that when parents demonstrate affirmation, acceptance, appreciation, availability, and affection toward their children, a sense of authenticity, security, significance, importance, and lovability are fostered. He also taught that when parents have only rules and no relationship, rebellion can develop. Take charge in your home while developing a relationship with your children. Model responsible, respectful, and accountable behaviors so they can develop these same positive traits, become more confident and successful in the classroom, and continue these actions into their adult lives.

Anita Redd has made a name for herself in Gwinnett and around the southeast as owner of Anita’s Balm, a natural moisturizing balm formulated to help treat skin conditions such as eczema. The idea to make her own balm spurred from her frustration to find a moisturizing product for her son, who suffers from eczema. After less than two years in business, Anita’s Balm is now sold in more than 1,300 stores, including independent pharmacies, spas, athletic, and health food stores. She recently gained media attention for transitioning to a new biodegradable packaging. Her new one-ounce jars are made with a corn and sugarcane-based resin called PLA. “I was very uncomfortable that most of my packaging was taking about one hundred years to break down in a landfill, and a lot of these packages are running up in the ocean and creating ocean pollution,” Redd said. Redd thinks Gwinnett has been a great county to start a business in, thanks to such networking groups as Georgia Commerce Club and Georgia Manufacturing Alliance, both of which were supportive in helping her grow her new business. Redd’s three children have grown up in the Gwinnett County School System, attending Brookwood Elementary, Five Forks Middle School, and Brookwood High School, and she says it’s the teachers that have made the most impact on her children’s education.

Meet David and Angela Gentile of Fresh Start Resale By Stacye Carroll Angela Gentile sits cross-legged atop a stool behind a glass countertop at Fresh Start Resale, the place she calls “My home away from home.” A couple of feet away, her husband David sorts through a stack of clothing for display. Angela smiles in his direction, recalling the warnings given about couples working together. The two have been married for eleven years and have worked together for two of those before “burnout” prompted a shift in their priorities. The name “Fresh Start” doesn’t just pertain to the merchandise. According to Angela, “It is also a fresh start for David and me.” Family and friends pitched in at the beginning, providing a stockpile of new and gently used clothing, accessories, home décor, and household items. Today, most merchandise is provided by over forty regular consignees who manage their accounts via the Fresh Start Resale website, which also features discount coupons for shoppers. A walk around the store reveals an interesting and eclectic inventory. The first thing that catches the eye is a stunning alligator handbag displayed alongside a matching pair of flats and a bracelet. Angela tells me I’m not the first to admire the set, and then points out a vintage Gucci on another wall that boasts bags by Guess and Coach. Scarves in a rainbow of colors decorate a countertop in front of a wall featuring a richly hued tapestry valance. There are tribal instruments and holiday decorations, and hanging at the end of every clothes rack one can find pre-fashioned outfits with matching accessories. Customers will find children’s items in the back of the store alongside a designated play area, whimsically painted by Angela’s mother, Karen Martin, who also painted the vanity at the front of the store that is used to display jewelry. Plans are in the works to expand soon in order to offer a larger selection of furniture. Angela describes herself as a problem solver and a lover of challenges, but entrepreneurship isn’t the only thing driving Angela Gentile. Charity is just as important. From the outset, Fresh Start Resale has
partnered with a variety of charitable organizations such as Quinn House, Sistas Circle, Rescue Me GA, and the Lion’s Club. To this end, Angela plans to host two events every year. In addition to discounted merchandise, there will be games for kids and a raffle benefitting a local charity. Ultimately, Angela and David hope to found a non-profit group benefiting the mentally ill. Fresh Start Resale is open Monday through Saturday, and Angela and David can also be found manning a booth at local festivals such as Daffy’s Day that was recently held at the Gwinnett Fairgrounds.

What is Medical Thermal Imaging? We utilize the best in special infrared-sensitive cameras to record temperatures of heat patterns in the body. Our procedures are non-invasive, no contact, no radiation, pain free FDA approved scans. Medical Thermography is used as a method of research for early pre-clinical diagnosis. The intrinsic safety of this method makes infrared Thermography free from any limitations or contra- indications. Thermography is a non-invasive, non-contact tool that uses the heat from your body to aid in making diagnosis of a host of health care conditions. Thermography is completely safe and uses no radiation. The medical applications of DITI are extensive, particularly in the fields of Rheumatology, Neurology, Oncology, Physiotherapy and sports medicine. Thermal imaging systems are an economical easy-to-use tool for examining and monitoring patients quickly and accurately. Utilizing high-speed computers and very accurate thermal imaging cameras, the heat from your body is processed and recorded in the computer into an image map which can then be analyzed on screen, printed or sent via email. A doctor can then use the image map to determine if abnormal hot or cold areas are present. These hot and cold areas, can relate to a number of conditions for which the Food and Drug Administration, Bureau of Medical Devices has approved the thermography procedure. These include, the screening for breast cancer, extra-cranial vessel disease (head and neck vessels), neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders and vascular disease of the lower extremities. There have been a number of advancements in the past decade, which has brought thermal imaging in medicine back to the forefront of diagnosis. As technology has advanced, so has our “medical” concept of thermal imaging.

Preparation Is Key By Glenton Ashby Last month Amy Hentschel wrote about preparing for senior care in the article “A Senior Moment: Prepare for the Future.” Due to a relative’s serious health issues recently, I am compelled to remind everyone about the importance of making some other preparations while still in good health. Serious illness brings challenges, but a couple of issues can be eliminated. First, have a will in place. This is important if you have dependents and/or significant assets in your estate. If you have minor children, remember to also state your desires regarding their guardianship. Second, have healthcare AND financial powers of attorney in place, naming a trusted family member or friend to speak on your behalf if you are incapacitated. Healthcare and financial issues can then be managed according to your wishes. The key is to take care of things while you are able and not in the middle of a crisis. Handling these issues from a hospital bed is not ideal to say the least. In most cases you cannot accomplish necessary legal paperwork while incapacitated, and you may not be able to deal with or discuss issues related to care or finances. In any given family there will be some who are on top of these issues. But even more likely there are those who believe things can be put off, or they give no thought to “what will happen if…?” To you I say there is no time like the present! None of us know when we might suffer a disabling event, a life-threatening illness, or an incapacitating crisis. Therefore, you have to plan ahead. As an adult child, find out if your parents have addressed these issues. As a parent you may recognize the need to talk to your adult children about their own planning. Maybe you need to have a discussion with your spouse about your collective situation. Don’t put if off. These things may be uncomfortable to deal with, but you will be thankful later in the midst of a crisis. Happy Thanksgiving!

My phone vibrated this morning with a text that read, “Just wanted you to know, God has another angel. She passed at 9:00 pm last night. This was an update from a very special hospice nurse letting me know that a dear sweet lady had passed. I serve the senior community, and the subject of hospice care often comes up. In fact, I make sure that each family that we advise has considered an end of life plan and understands the benefits of hospice services. For many the mention of the word can be frightening, and many are not even aware of the services at all. I believe so strongly in the care that hospice provides that I encourage every family not to fear this conversation, but to get educated and make a plan. Hospice is a special kind of healthcare that focuses on keeping the senior comfortable once the patient and physician have decided that the underlying disease can no longer be treated or cured. It neither hastens nor postpones death, and is focused on the belief that quality of life is as important as length of life. Hospice staff members help manage pain and symptoms, and provide emotional and spiritual support so patients can make the most of each day. A senior may receive this service anywhere that they consider to be home: their house, an assisted living facility, a hospital, or a rehab center. The program provides CNA care, nursing, medical supplies, and equipment. Hospice services are covered under a senior’s Medicare coverage or most insurance policies. The first steps are finding a great provider, getting educated on the program, and asking questions. The time to do this is not during a crisis, but in advance so you can make choices for yourself. You can find out about hospice online, or even through advisors like us. Many of our clients speak to their doctors about when the right time for hospice may come. The key point is education. God bless those that care for our loved ones every day, helping them to leave this world. For more information on hospice, please call Senior Provisions, LLC at 678925-0223.

Many people suffer from headaches, but at what cost? Are you missing out on family and things that you enjoy doing because of headaches? Headaches can be caused by many factors such as stress, hormones, blood sugar and pressure, neurotransmitters, nerve pressure, digestive problems, and toxicity. The goal is to find the cause and correct the problem so that your quality of your life is not compromised. Identifying the cause instead of using medications to “cover up” a headache is a more logical answer, especially when the cause can contribute to other health problems. When stress is a contributing factor, we must learn to handle stress more productively, such as through exercise or taking meditation. Then we need to identify the chemical reasons that may prevent effective stress management. Cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, helps the body manage stress, anxiety, and sleep. Low cortisol levels can interfere with your ability to cope with stress, leading to fatigue, headaches, and other symptoms. Adrenal hormones control your blood sugar and pressure, so an imbalance can play a major role in causing headache pain. Another area to look at is the nervous system, and neurotransmitters such as serotonin, the brain’s chemical messengers. Low levels of serotonin can cause headaches, fatigue, depression, and more. Inadequate nerve and/or blood supply to the neck and head can produce tension and unwanted pressure to those areas. Food sensitivities and gut disturbances, bacteria to yeast, and an inability to breakdown and absorb food, lead to inflammation and toxicity which cause headaches. There are simple tests you can do to identify the cause and then correct the problem naturally, giving your body the support it needs to get back in balance so you can enjoy life without compromise.

Empowerment – We Hear You, We Believe You By Julie Mills Many of our clients come in with complaints of pain that haven’t shown up on any of the medical tests they have endured. We know that this can be very frustrating and disheartening when you feel like there’s no proof of something being wrong or no definitive diagnosis. When we listen to your body with our hands, the proof is literally under our fingers. Our goals are to listen, assess, educate, and take appropriate action to help our clients have a better quality of life. When we talk about listening with our hands, it means the tissues feel different according to what is going in the body. We are feeling for inflammation, thickening, knots, tightness, hydration, and pliability. Many times these are subtle issues that make a huge impact on one’s health. Let’s take hydration for example. When the body is dehydrated, the connective tissue pulls on the muscles and causes stiffening and pain. Dehydration also causes an imbalance in the body which affects organ function. Water is the “hydraulic” fluid for the vertebrae and joints. When dehydrated, the whole body feels stiff, which affects the muscles and causes pain. Muscle cramping also occurs. Just increasing your water intake can reduce pain and improve your ability to get out and “do life.” Also, massage therapy increases blood flow and restores pliability to the affected muscles. Now, let’s look at inflammation. Scans are not going to detect this. However, when Continued on page 20

Living Your Actual Size By Jane Bishop A most interesting sight I have seen is a smart car, nestled between sedans and SUVs, moving rapidly on I-85. How out of place it seemed! Yet this little car kept pace with the bigger vehicles. The smart car is promoted as fuel efficient, environmentally responsible, and easy to park in small spaces. It does not pretend to be a vehicle with a larger engine, larger tires, or more seating. As a teen I enjoyed putting models together. I remember a Camaro that included yellow paint and decals. After carefully opening the sealed bag with all the parts, I began “building the car.” With patience and tenacity, I completed the scaled-tosize model with great satisfaction. Have you allowed yourself to feel out of place or overshadowed by others? Have you felt empty inside, like a model car, but looked good on the outside? Do you live life in your “actual size?” You may wonder, “How am I being my ‘actual size?’” Are you applying your gifts and skills, or are you sitting by the roadside? What is keeping you from being yourself? Do you allow intimidation from others? Are you like the smart car on I-85, finding a place and moving in pace with life? Take the next steps and live your actual size: i Refrain from minimizing others to enlarge yourself. i Give yourself permission to be you. i Reduce the intimidation factor by connecting with others on your strengths. i Consider hiring a personal life coach. Be confident in the person you were created to be. Smart car or model car….be your actual size! “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Empowerment – We Hear You, We Believe You Continued from page 19 the cells are inflamed, they can press on the superficial nerves and cause pain. A good example of this is fibromyalgia. Inflammation can be caused by the foods we eat (gluten, dairy, corn, sugar) and by stress. When we are stressed, we create our own toxins which cause inflammation and pain. By getting lymph therapy, which addresses inflammation and toxins, you can reduce the swelling and pain. The bottom line is that you want to look at the whole body, the whole person, the whole picture. There are great diagnostic tools out there, but sometimes they just do not detect the subtle imbalances in your body. You are responsible for your body and you know it better than anyone. Start building a team of professionals that can assess your body and direct you to a healthy, whole body, quality of life.
