“Javi’s Story”

Lost 15 lbs in 2 months !

Hi! My name is Javi. After seeing such great results my friend had with Dr. Gravante, I decided to go see her myself. I have my own company and with the type of work I do, the stress level is very high. The chronic stress was beginning to affect my health. I wasn’t sleeping at night, my energy level was very low, blood pressure was high and so was my cholesterol. I was having a hard time getting through the day. I’ve only been under care for a few months but already I am feeling so much better! I started sleeping through the night soon after starting Dr. Gravante’s Program. My energy level improved greatly and I was able to manage my stress much better. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal now – without having to take medication. I have lost over 16 pounds. This is so great! I am still working on the weight loss but I know I’m on the right track and it is just a matter of time. One nice side benefit that I didn’t expect was that my company is doing much better – this is very important to me. Getting well and truly healthy has made such a difference in, not only how I feel, but how it has affected my whole life! Thank you Dr. Gravante! Please RSVP at 678.990.9400 by Monday, June 15. for Your Evening Appointment! We’re looking forward to meetingCall you Today at our Summer Open House!

Senior Provisions: A Mission from the Heart By Our Town Staff Writer We are pleased to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Don and Shelia Norlander of Lawrenceville to the Our Town Community. When they first moved to Gwinnett County from Florida three years ago, their goals were to be closer to their daughter Jennifer Walsh and to enjoy their grandchildren. They did not anticipate a change in their circumstances, nor having to face the challenges of daily living. Like many seniors experiencing aging, they soon found themselves in the hospital and spending therapy time in a local skilled rehabilitation facility. Seeking guidance, the family brought Amy Hentschel, founder and senior advisor with Senior Provisions, LLC, into their lives. Senior Provisions provides senior care consultations and referrals at no cost to families. They meet face to face with the senior and his or her family and conduct a thorough needs-assessment to consider all of the factors that will influence their reco, mmendations. Amy asks about their medical and care concerns, social and spiritual needs, and their desired location and financial restraints. “Amy was a wealth of knowledge and she helped us make an informed decision about where my parents should move to and about the level of care that they needed,” explains Jennifer Walsh. Amy guided the family in learning about veteran’s benefits, and she supported them by answering questions as they transitioned into assisted living. Jennifer comments, “Thanks to Senior Provisions, my parents are flourishing in their new home at Sunrise at Webb Gin, and they have a great life!” With over 20 years combined experienced in senior care, Amy and her co-advisors, Mary Ellen Smith and Lauren Hamilton, serve the seniors of Gwinnett County and greater Atlanta every day. Their faith-based company is committed to helping each family find true solutions to their senior care needs. Their services are compensated by a referral fee paid from private pay care providers. Through their Harvest Program, the ministry side of the company, the organization serves all seniors regardless of their financial resources. The Harvest Program connects seniors to community

resource programs, such as veteran’s benefits, community Source programs, and Medicaid providers. Amy elaborates, “We have the knowledge of resources and deal with quality providers on a daily basis. We feel absolute joy in making those connections that will improve the life of each senior in need.” As part of the Harvest Program, Amy and her team facilitate local support groups and education seminars in Gwinnett. They lead a group of caregivers on the last Saturday of every month at Snellville United Methodist, where they encourage and inform families who are caring for their loved ones at home. Each family’s story is unique, and Senior Provisions strives to give them the level of service that they require. “We tour properties with families, advise on home care options, and even connect them with a specific law attorney. We are committed to helping them through whatever the family needs,” describes Amy. As true senior advocates, Senior Provisions stays committed to referring only those providers who deliver a high standard of senior care. No referral is made unless the provider has a solid track record of excellence. Amy explains, “Our company measure is personal, and we always ask ourselves if we would trust our parent with this care provider.” The Norlander’s story is similar to many other families in Gwinnett. The parents simply want to live independent lives and to enjoy their children and grandchildren while facing the challenges of aging. Senior Provisions’ focus is to help such families find true solutions to their needs. You can read more about this subject each month in Our Town Magazine in the Senior Moment column. — A Senior Moment

Quality of Life By Julie Mills If you have ever been to Body of Health, you will see that our motto is “Hurt less, Heal quicker, and Have a better Quality of Life.” “Quality of life” is one of those phrases that most of us take for granted. We really don’t think about it on a dayto-day basis. We just get up in the morning, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to work, maybe work out, walk the dog, do evening routines, and go to bed. But if you ever get sick or injured and need the help of another, then quality of life is changed. You can no longer do those little things you used to do by yourself. For example, if you have a shoulder injury, you cannot lift your arm to brush your hair, or if you have a knee replacement, you cannot reach your foot to put on your shoe. And then there is the big wake-up call: the diagnosis of cancer. With all of the treatments, you lose muscle mass, risk blood clots, have multitudes of doctor appointments, lose energy and appetite, and the list goes on. Talk about a major change in quality of life!! I wanted to share some wonderful success stories that have restored just a little more quality of life into people’s lives. It is the little things that give hope and independence to those who are suffering. It is not rocket science. The oldest medicine in the world is “touch”. I had a client come to me who had broken her wrist. Surgery was needed in order to set the bones, and physical therapy was done to restore muscle strength and mobility. Unfortunately, she did not fall into that typical six week window to heal, and by the end of two months, she could not make a fist or hold small objects much less attempt to cook or fold laundry. This was a change in quality of life. After just a few sessions of scar therapy, lymph drainage, and massage, she was able to regain movement of her hand and start doing the normal day-to-day tasks. She needed to release the scar adhesions, reduce the thickened, swollen tissues, and release tight, guarded muscles in the hand and arm. Another client I had experienced loss of sleep, anxiety, pain, and inflammation from fibromyalgia. She had seen several doctors and was taking multiple medications. With fibro, the nerves in the muscles continue to fire and cause inflammation and fatigue. It is also an immune disorder. With several sessions of lymph drainage

and light massage along with tissue work, this client was able to sleep through the night for the first time in a long while. Her appetite increased and she was able to get through the day with very little fatigue and pain. By paying attention to the soft tissues, and clearing the immune function (lymph), this client was able to experience a much greater quality of life. Lastly, I want to share about a client who had lymphedema in his legs. This was brought on by lymph node removal due to cancer. Both legs were so swollen that he could not bend his knees enough to get into his small sports car. His tissues felt like they were about to burst open due to the swelling, and his legs felt like wooden pegs. After multiple treatments and rerouting the edema, this client drove up to our office in his sports car!! Wow, that is quality of life restored! The range of motion in his legs was greatly improved, and he was able to play golf and work full time with no pain. What does quality of life mean to you? You do not have to suffer so much. Be proactive and make the changes necessary to live a wonderful quality of life! Julie Mills is Owner of Body of Health www.bodyofhealthandlife.com

One Man’s Opinion By Ryan T. Sauers Welcome to the September edition of Our Town Magazine. Fall is in the air and we are nearing the last quarter of the year. You will notice that we have expanded and added four additional gloss pages to the magazine this month. We have some more expansion plans in the works that will further grow the magazine. More to come later. Our Town Magazine, in printed and online form, continues to connect people across the county. Nearly everyone I meet knows someone else who is connected with the magazine. This has always been and remains a tight knit community. We have some tremendous articles this month, and I encourage you to read all of them as well as support our awesome advertisers. Without our advertisers, there would be no magazine. This month you will observe some new things that will help the Our Town Community. First, we have a new source for you to purchase custom print needs (invitations, notecards, photo collages, birth/wedding announcements, and much more). Check it out at www.ourtowncustomprint.com where you will find a specifically designed site to meet the needs of Our Town readers. Second, you will see information about a multi-part workshop coming to Gwinnett from some top trainers/consultants on small business organizational strategy, branding/marketing, and sales growth. As an Our Town Magazine reader, you will get a discounted rate for these workshops that will be held in Snellville in November. Finally, we are working to establish the first ever Our Town Community Liaison Committee (CLC). This group will consist of recognized leaders in the community who will come together once a quarter at the Our Town office (breakfast or lunch will be catered in) to share what they see is going on in the community and to provide insights that will help make our community a better place. Please email us directly at info@endresultz.com with nominations for others or for yourself. This information will go on to the nomination committee. So, until next time, keep the emails and calls coming, referrals churning, and word of mouth going. And, as always, remember this is my town, your town, a great town … OUR TOWN.

Do You Track What You Consume? By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT

SEPTEMBER CROSSWORD

How mindful are you of your money? Do you just let fifty dollars slip away? When you have a monetary goal, do you track your progress? Do you look back over your checking ledger at the end of the month to see exactly where your money has gone? Now let’s substitute calories for dollars. A food journal can be your ledger to account for all your caloric expenditures; a record that you can look back over and stay mindful of what you are eating. Our frenzied lives do not often allow us to stop and consider what we are putting into our bodies. We might even have the tendency to skip a meal all together. These are both contributing factors to weight gain. Food journaling is a time tested aid in the weight loss process. If you are starting a weight loss program or have hit a plateau in your current plan, you might want to consider keeping a food journal. People who want to lose weight should faithfully write down what they eat, avoid skipping meals, and avoid eating out at restaurants, especially at lunch. Research shows that participants who kept a food journal consistently lost about 6 more pounds than those who did not, those who skipped meals lost about 8 pounds less than those who ate regular meals, and those who ate out for lunch at least weekly lost 5 pounds fewer than those who ate out less frequently. The research also shows your total calories for the day are more important than if you are eating low fat, high protein, or low carb foods. Before you start a food journal, consider these tips: 1. If you are a gadget guru, apps like My Fitness Pal or Calorie King will work great 2. Set a reminder alarm on your smart phone to prompt you to journal 3. If you are a paper person, find a journal that will fit in your hand bag or pocket 4. Keep a pencil or pen in your journal 5. Be completely honest and record ALL that you eat and drink Continued on page 12

A Weekend In Seattle = Fun

www.musiconmainstreetlilburn.com

By Pam Walker

I love to travel both internationally and domestically, so I’m always open to visiting new places. Having never been to Washington State, Seattle seemed like a good weekend getaway! If you like cloud-shrouded mornings and cool weather that forces you to wear fleece every day, then go to Seattle. Even in the middle of July, the temps are in the 50s. Conversely, summer afternoons can get as warm as the upper 80s. These moderate temperatures benefit the nearby wine growing regions. You can visit more than 45 wineries just 15 miles outside of the city. But why spend your time tasting wine when there is so much more to do? Visit the San Juan Islands for a day and kayak within 20 feet of whales. Drive to Mt. Rainier and hike. I personally like the side trip to Olympic National Park where from the top of Hurricane Ridge you can see the Pacific Ocean as well as a range of snowy mountains rising to a height of 6,764 Ft. In Seattle itself there are tons of things to do. A visit to the Tillicum Village will get you a ferry ride, a salmon bake, and a show about the local tribes people. The Chihuly Garden and Glass is a huge complex showcasing monumental glass sculptures. It’s located near the base of the Space Needle, another must see in Seattle. Pike Market on any morning is something not to miss. It is perhaps the second most famous attraction in Seattle. Don’t forget to visit Chinatown, the Seattle Aquarium, and the Seattle Underground. Seattle’s famous coffeehouses are on every block, and with all the other things to do here, I needed a lot more time than just a weekend. With football season right around the corner, it’s a good time to bring awareness to the growing number of concussions suffered by young players each year. Last June, a new concussion prevention initiative was begun by the Pop Warner league to help reduce concussion and head injuries in young football players. Not surprisingly, this came just a few months after the press coverage of the NFL scandal and a lawsuit involving professional players suffering from post-concussion issues. Concussions in the sport of football make up over half of the 4+ million sport and recreation-related concussions suffered each year in the United States. The majority of these injuries occur during practice. The new Pop Warner rules include limiting contact during practice, no longer allowing head-to-head hits, and no full-speed or head-on tackling drills beyond 3 feet. This is a welcomed policy for parents of young footballers, as well as for healthcare providers. The good news is there will be fewer concussions. However, fewer does not equal none. In all circumstances, preparation is the best prevention. Proper training and equipment, transportation, and emergency facilities must be in place. Most schools are now requiring baseline concussion tests for their high school athletes. Those on the sideline need to be educated and well-rehearsed in the valuable skill of on-field assessment. Unfortunately, not all recreational football leagues typically have sideline health care personnel available. This shifts the primary responsibility directly to the coaches and parents. In addition, head injuries cannot be separated from the possibility of neck injury. Doctors specializing in neck and spinal injuries can help educate coaches and parents on the importance of proper nerve and spinal health in concussion players young and old. Education combined with moderation of play is a winning strategy to protecting the health of our youth. Dr. Louis Cavallo is owner of AC Spine & Wellness http://www.acchiropractic.com/

Celebrate Diversity with Your Young Children By Kristin McCabe Explaining the concept of “diversity” to your young child might feel like a complex lesson. By focusing on celebrating cultural differences, you can make an important lesson fun and natural. A preschooler’s concept of the world is relatively small and concrete, limited primarily to his or her family, neighborhood, and school. Help your child expand his world view by learning about different cultures through music, sports, and even wildlife around the world. You will help spark your child’s understanding of the vast size and rich texture of our global community. “We live in a diverse world. By teaching children to appreciate other cultures from an early age, you will help them develop compassion and seek out shared values,” says Dr. Gloria Julius, vice president of education for Primrose Schools. “Encourage a celebration of cultures near and far, including your own, to help your child grow to be an accepting, compassionate adult, who values the differences in others.” Dr. Julius offers parents a few tips to teach their children about diversity by celebrating cultures at home: Share Your Family History. Understanding others begins with an understanding of oneself. Show pictures of family members and talk about each person. Children love and remember stories, so share a favorite story or something you personally remember about that person. This builds a child’s awareness of family history and culture. Listen to Music. Share your family’s cultural heritage through music. Play music from your family’s country of origin or from your region in the United States, or play the favorite songs you sang as a child. Then listen to music from other cultures or parts of the country. Ask your child to identify the similarities and differences. Read a Book. Reading to a child is one of the best ways to introduce him or her to different types of families, children, and people from all over the world. Characters and storylines are great starting points for discussions about diversity as they can make a culture come to life. Look for books that have characters your child can identify with even though they may have different customs. Some suggestions

include: It’s Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr Children from Australia to Zimbabwe: A Photographic Journey Around the World by Maya Ajmera and Anna Rhesa Versola The Crayon Box That Talked by Shane Derolf Think Outside the Box. Seek out opportunities for your child to interact with children from different countries and cultures. Getting to know families that are different from your own can increase your family’s appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. Visit museums, festivals, ethnic restaurants, and other places that will help your child learn about various customs, cultures, and lifestyles. More at: www.PrimroseFiveForks.com or 770.985.0028.

Do You Track What You Consume? Continued from page 10

Include everything. And be accurate. A tablespoon of olive oil is 120 calories, and it does count towards your calorie total. Food journaling does require a certain amount of discipline in the beginning before it becomes a routine. Make it easy on yourself. Keep your journal accessible. Remove as many road blocks as you can that might deter you from logging an entry. If you get off track, just get back in there and pick it up again. It is about the process not perfection. By Carol C. Wood It is not unusual for students at times to feel unsure about their academic abilities, especially if they have a sibling or a friend who receives higher grades than they do, or if they have any type of learning challenge. To better equip students to become more confident in their ability to learn, some helpful suggestions are given below. Key #1 Think about what you want to accomplish academically and then set a few NEW goals. Write them visibly somewhere so you can be reminded of what you are working toward. The most successful people know how to set achievable and positive goals that will encourage them to take action in order to make those goals attainable. Key #2 See yourself as being successful. Create a visual image in your mind about what success looks like for you. Then, if and when there are times you feel discouraged, remember this visual picture you created. Key #3 Control your inner voice. All of us talk to ourselves in our minds and sometimes what we say is not positive, uplifting, or encouraging. Make sure you are giving yourself positive messages, such as: I can do this work; I have prepared well for this, and I am ready; I am improving, and I will continue to do so; I was uniquely created by God, and I have many skills, talents, and abilities to offer; I am going to work to my best ability, and I will accept the outcome since I have tried my best; I accept myself for the person God created me to be, I will celebrate when I am successful at school, and I will keep on trying when the outcome is not what I wanted or what I expected. Key #4 Reward your accomplishments. When you reach a goal, whether it is a short term or long term one, do something to reward yourself. For example, if you like to play tennis, go out and play tennis for a couple of hours after you receive a high grade on a difficult math test. Or, you can reward yourself by inviting a friend over to do something fun together. Key #5 Encourage others. When you help others think more positively about themselves, you will not only have a positive impact on them, but you will also have a positive impact on you. The Bible says in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” How true! It always feels good to encourage others because you have helped them feel better about the person they are! The Vacation Within By Susan Cadley “I loaf and invite my soul.” ~ Walt Whitman I was driving down an unpopulated two-lane road lined with fir trees for over an hour. Navy blue lakes, still and serene with not a cottage or boat in sight, dotted the background. There seemed to be hardly anyone else on the road that day, so I began counting the cars heading in the other direction. By the time I had reached my destination, only 8 cars had passed. There were less people, noise, and distraction, and it felt...well...I wasn’t really sure how I felt. I had left technology behind on this vacation as I truly desired to let go of my usual routine. When I reached my destination, I thought I felt tired; but that didn’t really fit, as physically I felt ready to explore the new surroundings. Could it be I had not let go enough to experience relaxation? Yes, that was it...relaxation, letting go, simply being in the moment. And it felt delicious and peaceful, within. Vacations are a break from routine, and they are meant to refill your inner energy reserves. You may not even realize how overscheduled, overwhelmed, or overtired you are until you take a break. In a recent article about the benefits of vacation in The Wall Street Journal, Scott Cooke, a partner at GCK Partners, said, “I think it’s [vacation] good for your soul. It makes you more creative. It makes you a better boss...a better worker.” Taking a break allows your mind to empty. When you are able to let go of distractions, you can relax enough to hear that inner voice that knows exactly what you need. The good news is that a vacation can be accessed anywhere, anytime, even right now. You don’t need to travel to distant lands or spend a lot of money to experience a vacation within. You have everything you need to travel there, right now. Here are some vacation options to consider: 1) Take a week or a few days off at home and only engage in non-work activities. Manage distractions and set a time limit on “to do” lists. Engage in activities you want to do, instead of “have” to do. 2) Take a day off to explore a part of town you’ve never been to, a museum, or a coffee shop. The idea is to get out of the ordinary.

PAGE 14

3) Meditation, prayer, or yoga can offer you immediate access as you enter the quiet and access your inner world. You can simply close your eyes, imagine yourself in your favorite place in nature, or focus on your breathing for a few minutes. Research has demonstrated that even a few minutes of meditation can lower blood pressure in addition to many other physiological effects. Are you ready to relax, renew, and experience more of your soul? Begin with conscious self-care and a little loafing, and the door will open to welcome you home. Music on Main Hosts: Shelby’s Music for a Cure By Stacye Carroll In addition to a weekly concert series, benefits have become a regular event at Music on Main Street this summer. In fact, as of this writing, there has been a benefit held on the grounds for the past seven consecutive Sundays. According to founder Scott Mecredy, hosting benefits at Music on Main Street, or MOMS, as it is affectionately called, is “doing good things through music”, which is a big part of the mission his mother gave him just before her death in 2010. So far this year, organizers have raised more than $20, 000 in support of such causes as diabetes treatment, cancer research, and helping those in the community who are facing a variety of health crises. On Saturday, September 14th, Scott and his staff will partner with local band Allen Court to host “Shelby’s Music for a Cure.” Proceeds will benefit CURE Childhood Cancer, an Atlanta-based organization with which Allen Court band member Bruce Prescott became familiar after his daughter, Shelby, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of three. Shelby lost her battle with cancer nine years ago, but Bruce still remembers the difference CURE made to his and other families facing this lifechanging diagnosis. According to their website, www.curechildhoodcancer.org/about-cure/frequentlyasked-questions/, of the 1,000,000 charities vying for contributions in the US today, less than 5 percent meet the criteria necessary to earn the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence and the Charity Navigator’s highest rating. By consistently exceeding industry standards, CURE Childhood Cancer has received both awards. Ninety percent of CURE’s resources go to fund targeted research. As Bruce explained during a recent interview, treatment methods for childhood cancer differ from those used in adults because children’s bodies are still growing and changing all the time. Conversely, most methods now used to treat cancer in adults actually sprang from treatments originally used in pediatrics, chemotherapy being chief among them. Bruce and his family benefitted from CURE’s Open Arms program which provides meals to pediatric cancer patients and their families. Besides meals CURE also provides support for caregivers in the form of recognition and opportunities for continuing education.

Childhood cancer is more common than most people think. It is the number one cause of death by disease in children. Over 12,000 children in the United States will be diagnosed this year, and over 400 of those will live in Georgia. And yet despite those numbers, just 3% of federal funding earmarked for cancer research is directed specifically towards children’s cancer. CURE Childhood Cancer receives none of that. Instead, CURE relies on foundations, corporations, individual donors, and special events, such as “Shelby’s Music for a Cure” to fund all of their programs. In addition to Allen Court, some of the bands slated to play at the September 14th benefit are Stop, Drop and Roll and the High Beams. In keeping with Music on Main Street’s objective to bring children and music together, some of the band members’ children will also be featured. There will be something for everybody: from Classic and Southern Rock to Americana/Folk Rock to something Scott Mecredy calls “Jam Grass” or “bluegrass with drums.” Plans for a raffle are also in the works. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the gate. More details are available at www.facebook.com/ events/488554754556129/?ref=2 and www.facebook.com/MusicOnMainStreetGA.

Helping Families Find True Solutions

Senior Care Consulting at No Cost to Families

There is a difference between making excuses and making things happen. In life, or in business, if you want something bad enough you will find a way to make it happen. If not, you will find excuses as to why it can’t (or won’t) work. For example, it’s amazing how many complaints are still made about the economy, even though many companies in our industry have grown through acquisitions, new hires, and diversification. These companies are making a solid profit because they have out-thought the competition. Quite frankly, I hate excuses. My mantra is simple: Make it happen. In other words, “Suck it up, quit complaining, stop making excuses that haven’t been valid since 2009, and, by all means, bring some true value to the table.” Winners will find a way to succeed in any situation, whereas whiners will list all the things that are holding them back. So, here is what I’d like to know: Are you better, more talented, more valuable, and more creative than your competitors? Do you want to win, or just go along for the ride? Are you part of the solution, or part of the problem? Look at it this way. There are 168 hours in a week. Whether you represent a small or large company, you do not have any more—or less—time than anyone else. What do you do with your time? Do you focus on things that really matter, or are you in “paralysis by analysis” or “decision by indecision” mode? Do you plan out each month, week, and day? I challenge you to dig deep, want it more than the other person, use every resource at your disposal in an intelligent manner, begin with the end in mind, and be strategic in your thinking. The current social platforms allow us to connect with anyone on the globe. Use this opportunity for sales and organizational growth. Then decide what you want to grow. As a first step, try setting SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound). Put these goals in writing, and only focus on two or three of them at a time. You should have a mix of short-, medium-, and long-term goals. Use these goals as a compass to ensure you are spending time on things that matter and are heading in the right direction. Embracing this mindset will allow you to gain customers through strategic planning and confidence. Do you want to succeed so much that you’ll find a way, or are you comfortable making excuses for why things won’t work? The choice is yours. And, if you do not believe me, then remember this advice from Yoda, our wise Star Wars friend: “Do or do not. There is no try.” Ryan T. Q and A with: Coach Cecil Flowe Parkview Football By Stacye Carroll Cecil Flowe has coached football at Parkview High School for 22 years, longer than any of his counterparts in Gwinnett County, and longer than the players on this year’s team have been alive. And he’s made good use of the time he’s been there. In what has now become a program tradition, Coach Flowe and his Parkview Panthers began racking up titles just one year after he arrived by winning the first of six region championships. The winning went on for 46 consecutive games over a 3 year period. Under Coach Flowe, the Panthers have made 18 straight playoff appearances and have won 4 state titles. With the 2013 high school football season officially under way, Our Town Magazine decided to check in with Coach Flowe to get some insight as to what we can expect from this year’s Parkview Panther football team. Our Town: Coach Flowe, how did off-season workouts go this year? Coach Flowe: Workouts went well. Every year you have a few players who are off at camp or who miss for whatever reason. But 85% were here for everything and it went well. Our Town: What do you feel is your biggest challenge heading into this season? Coach Flowe: We have to replace some players on defense, and we are untested at the quarterback position. Our Town: You have a good group of returning players this year. Are there standouts among the new players and underclassmen we should watch for? Coach Flowe: We have more defensive players than offensive players returning, but we have key people in position on both sides of the ball. That will help the new players learn faster. Our Town: When you look at this year’s roster on paper, how much do you likewhat you see? Coach Flowe: It seems we have the necessary pieces, but everyone has to buy into the position we need them to play to make our team the strongest. Our Town: How are things shaping up at the quarterback position? Coach Flowe: Three players are competing, and we will know soon who the starter will be.

G O

G P O A

Our Town: From what you’ve seen so far, are there any immediate playmakers? Coach Flowe: Justice Rosser, Jeremy Lacey, John Patterson, Turshard Kimble Brinson, and Bryce Lewis are all impact-type players. Our Town: Looking ahead at this year’s schedule, which team do you expect to be your most challenging opponent? Coach Flowe: All of them will be a challenge. This league is like the SEC; it is a dog fight each week. Our Town: Some say young people have changed over the years. Others say it’s their influences that have changed. As someone who has worked with young people for decades, what do see? Coach Flowe: Yes, I do see change, but it is not bad. The biggest challenge for everyone is insisting that kids understand that anything good is worked for, not given. Our Town: How important is community involvement to Parkview Football? Coach Flowe: Community involvement is the very thing that built Parkview. Community is very important to a school’s success. Our Town:  What do you like best about your job? Coach Flowe: Watching kids grow up to disciplined young people.20 FREE 20become oz.responsible, with the purchase FREE

Chaplain’s Corner

Our Town Gwinnett is proud to present...

By Pastor Derek Mitchell LOL! Most of us read those letters in a text and immediately understand that the sender thought something was very funny. One lady connected to our church, however, added LOL! to the end of her text to console a lady whose mother had passed away. Her intention to communicate “Lots Of Love” was shockingly off the mark! At Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene in Lilburn, we have repurposed the whimsical acronym LOL to mean something that’s very important to our life together – Loving’ On Lilburn! When we LOL, we choose a nearby neighborhood to “love on” with simple acts that express the love and kindness of God to our neighbors – with no strings attached. We have picked up trash, repainted signs, landscaped, repaired front porches and mail boxes, and have even thrown a block party for a neighborhood that had forgotten how great it was to share good food and conversation. In the Scriptures, Jesus gave us what’s often called The Greatest Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind; and, love your neighbor as yourself.” That’s pretty simple. Our LOLs are just one way we try to keep it simple at Harvest. We also challenge each other to find ways to love on our neighbors in everyday life. It may be as simple as praying for a neighbor or just waving and smiling as they pass by. Some have delivered cookies, pies, or even full meals to grieving neighbors. Some have helped with home maintenance when a neighbor is in the hospital. In every neighborhood there are families dealing with the brokenness of life that we all face from time to time: job loss, struggling marriages, troubled children, financial woes, or failing health. These things occur regularly and, too often, silently, until the “for sale” sign goes up in the yard. Loving our neighbors with the love of Christ and expecting nothing in return can be shocking -- as shocking as an “LOL” in an unexpected place! While neighbors elsewhere may be BFN (Bully For Norcross) or ROTFL (Really Optimistic Troubadours For Lawrenceville), I hope you will always find us LOL – Loving’ On Lilburn! Derek Mitchell is Pastor of Harvest Community Church of the Nazarene

By Glenton Ashby To continue our series, you’ve rounded third base, and now you are headed for home. What does that mean? It can mean any or all of these at some point in your golden years: retirement and travel; health issues; no more mortgage; long term care needs; end of life issues (morbid but true); and people inheriting your estate. Several things should be considered for this stage of life. Plan to have more cash available, but act as if it is unreplenishable. In retirement your income will most likely be fixed if you are not working. Good investment returns may replenish some, or, in a best case scenario, all of what you use. But you should have the mindset that what you use up will not be replaced completely. You need to have a plan in place to keep you living within your means. Hopefully this will allow you to accomplish some “retirement dreams,” but also to live a comfortable day to day life for a long time. Keep in mind that one of the biggest retirement expenses is health care. Even with insurance and other medical benefits, there can be substantial out-of-pocket costs. A lot of cash can be spent in a short amount of time. Have a budget that includes regularly setting aside funds for future medical expenses. Equally important, have discussions with your children or other relatives who may have to assume responsibility for your physical or financial well-being. Let them know your wishes now in case you are unable to later. Have healthcare and financial powers of attorney in place in case you become incapacitated. This preplanning will make things easier for you and for your loved ones. If you have dependents and/or substantial assets, proper asset protection is essential. Have a written will to make financial provision for surviving dependents and to define what happens with your belongings when you are gone. Finally, be prepared to touch home plate. All of us will get there. We just don’t know when. Glenton Ashby is Owner of Halcyon Financial Planning, LLC www. HalcyonFP.com

Homegrown Happiness: Meet Farmer Doug By Joe Westbury LILBURN — Farming has never been an easy or predictable job. When one practices organic gardening free of chemical fertilizers and dangerous pesticides, it’s even more unpredictable. But farmers like Doug Ruling believe strongly that producing healthy food is the secret to a healthier life. Ruling grew up on a dairy farm in Bainbridge, NY, where his parents instilled a strong work ethic and a love of the land. He carried those virtues south when he moved to Norcross. He soon found a job at a Norcross florist. He later purchased a store that became Doug Ruling Flower Shop, a store he still owns today. For 21 years Ruling has coaxed fruits and vegetables out of the five-acre plot in this historic corner of Lilburn. The farm is easy to miss. Without the hand painted sign proclaiming the sale of vegetables, most drivers would pass right by. But the dirt driveway just around the corner from Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Camp Creek and Arcado roads, offers a glimpse into another world. Ruling tries to capture a simpler time in his garden with his hand-painted signs and old chairs scattered about, inviting customers to relax in the shade and not worry about rushing in and out. The farm has become an impromptu gathering spot where friends meet to pick up the day’s bounty that includes freshly laid eggs filled with deep yellowto-orange yolks from uncaged chickens. Many customers have embraced the concept of supporting community-supported agriculture (CSA). For a set fee between $15 and $30, customers receive a predetermined amount of vegetables before they are offered to other individuals. Rebecca Valdez has been coming to the farm for 10 years. “It’s a challenge to try to eat what is in season rather than what you always want,” she says, “but it’s much better for the environment. It’s getting back to how we used to eat.” Ruling says, “People need to expand their diet and try something different. Eating in season opens an entirely new world if you have a source that is varied rather than offering just a handful of the same product.” For example, Ruling offers bok choy (also referred to as Chinese cabbage), and Potatoes are popular with customers introduced many of his customers to nutri- and are now in plentiful supply. ent-dense Malabar spinach, a variety that many never heard of, but instantly fell in love with. “Most of my customers are motivated to try different things, so they are happy with the variety they see here,” Ruling says. Though not formally organic certified – the credentialing process is too expensive – Ruling nonetheless uses only organic fertilizer and practices pest control with no chemicals. The farm’s chickens and ducks, along with compost, are the sole source of fertilization. He practices a simple earth-to-earth philosophy; what comes out of the

Chickens struggle to get their share of fresh kale which Ruling has tossed into their feeding area. The rich coloring of the egg yolks reflect the kind of diet and variety of vegetables they have been enjoying in their uncaged lifestyle.

Doug Ruling pulls fresh carrots from the Lilburn soil. “Nothing does my heart better than seeing a young child light up when he eats his first real carrot after refusing to eat ‘store bought’ carrots with less flavor,” he says. ground returns to the ground in a continuous life cycle. “I may have an occasional worm hole in my leaves and the fruit will not always be perfect, but that’s just cosmetic. Healthy doesn’t always look perfect.” While the work is hard, Ruling would not have it any other way. He says few things compare with being in touch with God’s creation other than pushing a seed down into the warm earth, placing a little fertilizer into the hole, and using rainwater to start the growing process. But Ruling, now in his early 60s, pauses as he thinks back over all the struggles it has taken to bring a crop to harvest. He boils his thoughts down to a few well-chosen words. “Sometimes I get down in the dumps and get a little upset because I didn’t choose a more lucrative career. But I’m not the kind of person who wants to retire in Florida or travel and see the world. I have my world right here, surrounded by nature and God’s bounty, and it’s all I really need.”

Experience The Difference at MOUNTAIN PARK FITNESS… “Though I’ve never participated in, or joined a fitness center before, Mountain Park Fitness Center feels like home. I felt welcomed upon my first visit and the staff is exceptional. I started off with a fitness trainer, Heidi Bryant. What a perfect fit!!! I may regret prepping for my sessions, but once I am here, I feel great. No regrets whatsoever. I leave each session feeling stronger and more confident. With the capability of coming to the fitness center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you can’t lose. That is one aspect of the fitness center I need to take more advantage of. Thanks to Heidi, Caroline, and Alan for making one feel like family.”

Preparing Your Garden for Fall Vegetables!

• 24 Hour Access • Life Fitness Strength • Hammer Strength • Free Weights • Treadmills • Bikes • Ellipticals • Personal Training • 36-Week Weight Loss Program • Tanning • Showers

Fall is the beginning of a wonderful gardening season. It’s the opportunity to grow tasty veggies that can thrive in the fall and winter season. Beginning now, before the evenings get chilly, start getting your garden ready! Fabulous home grown cool weather salads and sides are just around the corner. Here’s how to get started! Tidy Up: • Get rid of weeds! There’s really no better option for weed control for vegetable gardens than to get in there and start pulling and digging. Remember to pull up as much of the roots as possible. • If your plants are done producing for the present season – remove them! Spent plants can be a catalyst for fungus and pests. • Remove fallen fruits and vegetables. Rotting attracts pests. Freshen up your soil: Remove any mulch and add new soil for the new season. There are some great organic soils with all the nutrients and richness your garden will need. Mushroom Compost is also a great nutrient addition. Tilling the new soil amendments into the existing soil is the best way to loosen the soil for root growth but churning with a shovel will work well too (and offer a great workout for the day). Rake everything smooth: Get that garden looking good! Smooth out the soil to keep an eye out for weeds popping up. Rows are easier to lay out in a smooth garden where water won’t puddle and attract pests. And of course, it looks really great. Pat yourself on the back and get ready to plant those delicious fall vegetables. Here are some easy to grow vegetables that are perfect for a Fall garden: lettuce bok choy peas bush beans asparagus kale radish cabbage broccoli spinach Dana Pike is Owner of Family Tree Garden Center www.thefamilytreeinc.com

Recently a colleague of mine suggested I check out a local dog boarding company that he had heard about. Knowing that I am a believer in competition and strength in numbers, my colleague told me that the company was offering private dog boarding in the sitter’s home, and doggie daycare services at half the industry norm. So I visited their website. At first glance the place appeared nice, simple, and to the point. Upon further inspection, I noticed things that were worrisome and disturbing. The company offered a “cage free” and “resort” environment, meaning that the dogs were left free to roam inside and outside of the home during the day, and were kept in a room all together at night, even if the owner went to run errands, etc. As a dog trainer with knowledge of dog psychology and dog behavior, I found this to be irresponsible. Dogs are unpredictable by nature, and any number of things can go wrong among unsupervised dogs, especially when they are not from the same family. A fight could easily occur even among dogs that have never experienced such problems. Being away from home can be stressful, which can lead to behavior that normally would not exist. While watching a video, I saw crates lining a room that was touted as “cage free.” So which is it, cage free or not? Additionally, while perusing the photo gallery, I saw a photo taken of a dog inside the home with trash strewn about. This could be very hazardous for the dogs since they might digest something that could be harmful. To be continued… Terie Hansen is a Professional Dog Trainer, Pet Sitter & Owner at Good Dog!
