Sandy’s Story Please join us for this One Night Only Celebration with over $3,000 in Give-aways,

There is no better way to celebrate my birthday month than Cocktails, and Hors D’oeuvres. with a new lease on life! When reflecting back, I was totally addicted to caffeine, sugar and fast food. It was so bad that the employees knew my voice at the drive thru restaurant and would simply say, “Do you want your usual?” I had no idea what I was putting my body through. I I first met Dr. Gravante at one of her nutritional workshops. I was there, not for me, but to support a friend who wanted to attend. Little did I know that when I walked into Dr. G’s office that my whole life was about to change – for the better! I’ve always been athletic, often playing tennis multiple times during the week but I never really felt good. I always had aches and pains and chronic low energy. Many times I wondered if all this exercise was worth it! Now, for the first time in years I’m feeling healthy and energetic thanks to Dr. G and her staff’s guidance and fabulous support! Dr. Gravante’s Nutrition Program was the “kick start” in helping my body to heal from the inside out. I thought I could never kick my “addiction” to junk food; but Dr. Gravante and her staff, made it possible for me to see that I could do this. Then after being on Program for a short while, I could sense how much better I felt. I was finally taking care of my body and giving it what it needed to function properly and Not what I wanted. What a revelation! I also needed chiropractic care which helped so much with my aches and pains….together, this brought everything into perspective. I’m Sandy, I’m 47 and I love telling my story! Life is Good!!!

ABOUT THE COVER
Meet Karen Minton
March ushers in spring and bids farewell to a crazy winter. The fluctuating warm temperatures made for an unseasonably warm winter that left us wondering, what can possibly be in store for spring? Thankfully we have Karen Minton, a meteorologist at Channel 2 Action News; who not only makes sense out of the bizarre climate patterns but brightens up our mornings. She has become a staple in Atlanta and in many of our homes a tradition along with our morning coffee. Karen was born in San Pedro, California and raised in Lodi, California. Her aspiration was to become a dentist and therefore, majored in biological science; a decision that would soon be challenged while working for a dentist during the summer. During that summer job she quickly realized that dentistry was not the profession for her, not exactly what she envisioned for her life. As destiny would have it she met up with a friend who worked for an NBC affiliate in Stockton, California. It was there her life would take an unexpected turn that would lead her to her calling. She decided to go back to school and follow her gut instincts which led her to broadcasting. While there a professor honed in on her ability and encouraged her, acknowledging her talent and advised her to pursue an internship. In 1984 she received a call from WSB which would lay the path to the next twenty eight years of her life. The budding California girl was about to call Georgia… home. Now a force to be reckoned with, her days begin at 1:00 am. Yes, you read that right. She arrives at work at 2:30am and is on camera delivering the weather by 4:30am. Her perfect appearance and sunny disposition would never give away her hectic morning pace. Karen is a single mom juggling work and home. When asked how she handled the stresses of work and motherhood she said, “When my daughters were younger I needed to have a support group when I couldn’t pick up my daughters from school because I was working late”. Her grown daughters Kimberly and Leigh have an empowering role model that has always made sure to surround herself with a network of moms that support each other and are reliable in times of need. “I kept a chart on a dry erase board with every activity listed. I would always lay out my daughters clothes the night before. I was extremely organized”. Something she encourages all working mothers to cultivate in their daily routines to stay sane and achieve the best in both worlds; work and home. During Karen’s term at WSB, she has had the privilege to be the guest host on People to People, interview celebrities in the Salute to America 4th of July, and Children’s Health Care of Atlanta Parades. Her work was honored in 1988 with the Associated Press Award for Excellence in Weather Reporting, and in 2008 received an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement Team Coverage of the Americus tornado. Karen is passionate about her work and her achievements are proof of that. “I love the southern hospitality here in Georgia and I love the people”. She is proud to be a part of the Atlanta community and to be welcomed into our homes every morning. Writer, Shayla Ortiz

Please visit our website for more information. By Sagdrina Jalal When losing weight, does the scale become your arch nemesis? Do you gauge your success on the number in bold on the LED screen? What many people do not know is that weight alone is an incomplete way of looking at ones’ overall fitness level. In order to be considered “fit” a person must meet minimum standards in five different areas: body composition, flexibility, muscular endurance and aerobic fitness. Body weight falls into the category of body composition along with fat mass, lean mass, and fat distribution. Fat mass (usually referred to as percentage of body fat) reflects the total amount of fat in your body. There are different healthy ranges for both men and women. The range also varies based on age. The best way to have your body fat determined is by a health or wellness professional. They use a variety of tools to aid them in determining where you fall in the established body fat ranges. Lean Mass is that which makes up your body once the percentage of body fat has been determined. This includes bones, muscle, organs, water, and all non-fatty tissue. This is also where one can see how looking at weight alone can be misleading. Muscle is much denser than fat and therefore weighs more. By looking at weight alone, a person who has a large amount of lean mass (and therefore low body fat) can be considered overweight. Bodybuilders often fall into this category. Despite having very little body fat, their large amount of lean mass creates a high number on the scale. Fat Distribution is the other consideration of body composition. It is now understood that how a person carries their fat is important in developing a clear view of their bodies’ makeup. People who carry their fat around their mid-section are more prone to cardiovascular and other diseases. Those whose weight is distributed around their hips, thighs, and buttocks, seem to have a far less risk. So the next time you step on the scale, relax. This is just a small part of your fitness profile!

Live in the Present
A
By Glenton Ashby
re you dwelling on the past, worrying about the future or are you living in the present? In my previous article one of the things I wrote about was having a plan that mirrors your present stage of life. I want to continue that thought here. What you do now impacts your future. With a good plan in place you should be able to work toward achieving your future requirements or desires without sacrificing current peace of mind. If things are in balance, your current financial situation will be put in order first, followed by planning for, and putting, your financial future in order. At the same time, you will be ready to adjust or defer future considerations in order to deal with any difficult financial issues that may arise right now. That may be a short- or a long-term adjustment. In the present economic and financial climate, setbacks can occur in a hurry and without warning. A defensive mindset is probably best for the near term. That is, your first priorities should be debt elimination and building a savings cushion. If those two areas are in good shape more emphasis can be placed on other objectives such as saving for near term goals or for retirement.

So, for example, a recent college graduate may have retirement objectives, but he or she must deal with current financial realities also. Are there student loans to pay off ? Is there enough income for current spending and saving? Does money need to be set aside for a car or a house? Should saving for retirement be deferred for a while? For someone who is more established vocationally and financially it will be easier to begin addressing long-term objectives. A good savings and spending plan will be in place for current needs allowing funds to be set aside for future needs such as retirement, saving for your children’s college and other financial objectives. What about after you are gone? Are you planning to leave some type of inheritance to your children, grandchildren, relatives or friends? Are you planning to leave money or assets to a charity or non-profit? Future planning for current peace of mind in these areas should include a will, healthcare and financial powers of attorney, trusts if needed or desired and provision for the care of minor children. You have to address these issues early so that you make the decisions instead of decisions being made for you or in your absence. It is great to have financial goals and objectives. Proper priorities and objectives will enable you to be content about your current financial state, both now and in the future. Feedback and topic suggestions are welcome – email HalcyonTimes@HalcyonFP.com, or comment at www. HalcyonFP.com/halcyon-times. Tweet @halcyonplanning. Volunteering – The Biggest Career Though I often speak of networking as the most important thing you can do throughout your life that will help you in your career development, volunteering goes hand-in-hand with networking, and usually leads to better networking. So if you think you could do better in your networking efforts, one place to start is with volunteering more in your community.
ties that might help you to develop that skill. Don’t be afraid to ask the volunteer coordinator to give you an opportunity to do additional tasks that reflect those skills. For example – if you’ve been out of the workforce for sometime and feel you don’t know the current software commonly used, ask to help

industries. Always strive to make a good impression. Give your best efforts, treating your tasks as you would a paid job. Attend the fundraising and public events with organizations you volunteer for. Start up conversations with others and share your contact information when appropriate – you never know where it can lead to. So if you are like so many people who say they need to do more networking, consider volunteering, especially if you want to work in a different industry, or change career paths altogether. You can seek out something that will improve certain skill sets, choose something completely different from your work, or something that would be just fun for you. If you need help figuring out what type of volunteer work to get involved with, www.handsonatlanta.org and www.unitedway.org are good places to start. It doesn’t have to be a big commitment – consider 2 hours every-other week. Make the commitment and put it on the calendar. Before you know it, your contact list will grow and you’ll find yourself better situated for your career planning goals.
We all know that volunteering can lift your spirits by helping others out of your own generosity, as well as doing something productive for your community. So much of what we all enjoy in our lives would be missing without the people who volunteer their time to make our community better. But volunteering can be as helpful to the volunteer as it is the people they are helping.
1. It looks good on your resume. Whether you are employed or not, volunteering shows that you live a full life, and that it’s not all about work. Especially if you’ve been out of work for some time, adding volunteer experience to your resume can show how you made good use of your time to help others. Employed or not, we are all busy. Start with a small commitment and see if you can build on that.

s a child, I would be so excited about the first day of school that I couldn’t sleep the night before! Many children are fortunate to have such a positive school experience like I did, but for some, school is something they dislike. What are the signs of school stress? When students dislike school, it can affect them physically by causing headaches, stomach aches, trouble sleeping, or moodiness. Some students will fake illness to get out of going to school. Stressed students may have a hard time making decisions, such as not be able to decide what to eat or wear. They may procrastinate putting their things together for the next day, therefore, may miss the school bus or be late to school. For students who do not like school, it is important to determine why. Students may dislike school because they are being bullied or a kid they do not like wants to hang around them. Perhaps the student does not get along with one of his or her teachers, feels different from others, or does not have many friends. They may be problems with their course work. The work may be too easy so they are bored or too difficult so they feel “stupid”, overwhelmed or hopeless. Some students may have such severe separation anxiety from their parents that they feel they cannot attend school. Once the cause of disliking school has been determined, steps can be taken to improve their feelings and school experience.

It is important to find help. Students who dislike school may be helped by talking to their parents, a relative, teacher, or school counselor about this. If severe enough, students may need to talk to a professional outside of school and their family. Do the following to feel better about school. Have students write down what they dislike about school. Have them identify what they can change on the list and begin to ask some questions. Would remembering to do homework help them to feel more confident if they were called on in class? Could they find ways to show off their special interests and talents? If they made just one new friend, would they feel less alone? If they have helped someone else feel less alone, would that cause them to feel better? Which activities could they try that would help them meet new friends? Would receiving outside academic assistance help reduce their stress and improve their confidence and motivation? Of course, they may not be able to change everything about what they dislike about school, but they can focus on what can be changed. Parents should talk positively with their children about their anxieties, try to relate to them, and understand their concerns. Parents can be empathetic and encourage the student to not feel dumb or weird for disliking school. A positive attitude in parents is very important because parents who are anxious communicate their anxiety to the child. If children fake illness, doctors recommend that parents should not accuse them of lying because they may try even harder to convince you they are ill. Encourage your children to go to school, but if you do allow them to stay home, make sure the experience is not too enjoyable by having them stay in bed all day and all evening with no television, video games, or other “fun” activities. There can be no rewards for getting better at 3 pm. If it is not addressed, faking illness can become a chronic problem. Unless a child suffers from a legitimate anxiety disorder and needs to seek professional help, the best policy for parents to follow is to be understanding, but firm, and insist the student goes to class. It should not be a negotiable matter about going to school. Reassure your child that you know school can be hard or making friends can be difficult, but in the end, let them know they are going to school without exception, it is their job, it is worthwhile, and then try to help them deal with whatever they are anxious about.

WELLNESS
Good Night

I
am fascinated by the function of the human body. Nancy Roper, a well-respected English nurse and educator in the 1940s -1960s, devised a chart followed by nurses and physicians called the Activities of Daily Living or ADLs. According to the ADLs, the human body should undergo 11 regular activities in order for us to live in a healthy state. They are: Breathing, Eating Food and Drinking Fluids, Elimination (Urine & Feces), Physical Movement, Sleeping, Controlling Body Temperature, Maintaining a Safe Environment, Personal Hygiene, Work & Play, Communication and Expressing Sexuality Of these eleven, Roper and her colleagues identified 5 as being true basic needs of life. Interestingly, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the famous cardiothoracic surgeon and one of television’s most popular medical experts, appeared on the TODAY show a few weeks ago and listed four (adult) life “cravings” which fall in line with Roper’s Basic Needs: Eating Food, Drinking Water, Having Sex and Getting Sleep Dr. Oz focused on sleep during the show, and it really struck a cord with me. I, personally, MUST get 8 hours of sleep to function well during the day. Granted, my daily activity level is abnormally higher than the average American, but even when I’m not doing what I do, I can tell when I haven’t gotten my 8 hours. My eyes become dry and burn, I can’t concentrate on menial tasks, I get easily frustrated or irritated, and I simply cannot stop yawning all day. You probably know people, like I do, that don’t sleep. It might even be you. They drift to sleep after working (or playing) on the computer until the wee hours of the morning. Only to get up around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. to get a “snack” or find something to do besides get in the bed and actually sleep. They typically have a lot on their mind - what needs to be done that isn’t done, or things that are causing them anger, frustration, fear, worry, excitement or anticipation. Whatever it is, they simply cannot settle their mind enough to sleep a continuous 6-8 hours. Dr. Oz listed other items that restrict the body’s natural ability to sleep: Cold Feet – the body actually cannot sleep when the feet are cold. Warm ‘em up! Overheating – the body prefers to sleep in a cooler atmosphere, hence sheets, blankets and comforters. He recommends cooling the room to 68* for optimal sleep. Blue Lights – blue light is typically emitted from televisions, computer screens and phone chargers. He recommends charging computers and cell phones at least 5 feet away from the head and face. Even better - recharge them in another room from where you’re sleeping. Turn off the television! Additionally, Dr. Oz recommends the following: Take a low dose (1mg) of Melatonin (a natural hormone that regulates the wake-sleep cycle) after dinner. (I recommend checking with your physician before administering any drug or hormone) Drink hot tea with Valerian Root 2-3 hours before sleeping to allow the body to absorb the herb. Valerian has demonstrated sedative and anti-anxiety properties. Keep an orange hued night light nearby. The orange tinge imitates sunset and naturally releases melatonin in the brain. If you or someone you know is having trouble getting the sleep necessary to aid in the natural healthy function of the brain and body, share these tips. Any change from a habit created takes time, so be patient. Happy sleeping…

Why do you want to Integrate Therapies?
Health and you
Julie Mills, CMT, LLCC
I talk a lot about integrating therapies. What do I mean by that? That can actually mean two things. It could mean integrating manual therapies such as different massage techniques. It could also mean integrating medical therapies such as conventional medicine (surgery, medications, etc.) and alternative therapies (massage, nutrition, etc.). What would be the benefit of doing so? There is so much controversial information out there and it is difficult to make lifestyle changes, however, the benefits are priceless! I will talk first about integrating manual, massage therapies. Many people ask me if I give deep tissue, or Swedish , or cranio sacral, or sports massage? The answer to all of it is YES, but do I give just one type to a single individual? The answer is NO! Every person is different from the make up of their body to the issues at hand. Having a “routine” and a specific technique, limits the effectiveness of the therapy. Being well versed in a variety of modalities, allows me to incorporate what is needed for that individual. The body is an amazing thing. It actually guides me where I need to go and helps me find the root of the issues at hand. I get different signals from the body such as a vibration, a warmness, a pull or draw to a specific area, a resistance, a line of tension, or a subtle calmness. Strokes or techniques are necessary however a simple touch where needed is powerful. Incorporating a variety of body work techniques allows your body to fully release and let go of the tension or pain at hand. It allows you to heal fully and it responds to the touch of a well versed therapist with healing intent. Let’s look at integrating conventional therapies with alternative
Our Town Magazine
therapies. I find that many of my clients are turned off by the word “alternative”. It is amazing the impact that word alone has on people. All it means is an “alternate route”. Think about it this way, what are you going to do at home to help yourself and the doctors? What are you going to do to keep yourself healthy and prevent disease? Remember disease does not just happen, it is a cascade of things that have gotten off balance in the body that creates disease. Going to the doctor to get your check ups etc is okay. I am not saying to never go to the doctor. They are part of your health team. All I am saying is to incorporate natural ways your body can live and thrive. Making good food choices instead of eating out of convenience, getting 8 hours of sleep instead of pushing yourself till all hours or the night, or getting that much needed massage to release toxins trapped in your tissues due to excess stress, can all make a difference in your life. Taking control of your body means less medications, less injury, less pain and less stress. Most people look at these things as luxuries or that they are pampering themselves if they slow down. I challenge you to look at it as your responsibility! Our medical system is set up for treatment, not prevention. It is up to you to prevent issues! On that same token the approach to treatment is specialized and dependent upon medication. The whole body is not considered when something goes wrong. It is up to you alone to incorporate whole body healing. The great news about all of this is that it is simple to do. It might be different than you are accustomed to but it is actually quite simple. Think about it. . . Drink more water (pretty simple), go to bed before midnight, eat a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a bacon burger, snack on mixed nuts instead
of cheetos, cut out soft drinks, get a massage, go for a walk. Can you see all of these things as “doable”? It is not rocket science but it is much more powerful than rocket science, it sustains life! Is integrative medicine needed? YES, and you can start today with simple changes that make all the difference in the world! have felt a positive procedure used in the healing strategy. In addition to changing the focus of treatment to one of nurturing and healing, when a client chooses to receive an oncology massage, it gives them a sense of empowerment to take control of the direction of their healing process. This can be one of the most important decisions they make because what is done at this point may accelerate healing, prevent recurrence of the disease, and improve quality of life. Each of us is unique. We live differently, get sick differently, and heal differently. If you have received a cancer diagnosis and choose Oncology Massage for yourself, you will be treated as the unique individual you are and with the respect you deserve. You are more than a disease. You are more than a body in need of healing. Your therapist can help you back to full integration of body and mind with the soothing touch of massage therapy that brings hope, empowerment, and comfort. Now is the time to take care of yourself by choosing to give yourself this gift. Julie Mills, CMT, LLCC of Body of Health See our ad on page 4 www.bodyofhealthandlife.com

Counselor’s Corner Your Life IS a Creative Process
W
henever I start a creative project, I seem to go through a similar process. Because I know my process, it can make starting a bit easier.... usually. I know that no matter what shows up, I can create again and the learning is in the doing not the finished project. I still get frustrated...I keep fortitude and acceptance in my pocket.
The following are some creative stages I move in and through and around when I paint along with some life lessons that parallel the process;
I recently signed up for a painting class at my local Parks and Recreation Center. Painting with acrylic paints is a new venture for me, and I entered the class not knowing a thing about this medium. I was there to learn and I brought with me a sense of excitement and trepidation. That’s just part of the process of delving into something new.
Life: If you stop yourself from creating new relationships, job opportunities, or projects, it may be fear getting in your way. Fear makes us pause and evaluate. Then, when we discover the coast is clear we move ahead. If you get stuck in this stage, you won’t experience all you can in your life. This is “take a risk” phase and it’s where you’ll grow. Shift your inner dialogue to “I can do this”.
I believe every person is creative; it’s not just the obvious people who enjoy artistic endeavors who are creative. You are creative in how you design your calendar, home, clothes, food, garden, and self-care. You are creative in how you spend your time, with whom, and how. You are creative in writing an email, a card, or a note for the babysitter. Any time there is some-thing that is an outcome of no-thing - you’ve created. So for those of you that affirm, “I’m not creative” you no longer have permission to say this. Instead, embrace and honor your creativity in whatever form it appears. The more you do, it will grow and expand.
2) If you don’t like it, change it, add color, paint over it. Just about every time I’ll reach a stage where I don’t like my painting. Something’s not right. Perhaps the proportion is off or I don’t like the color. I’ve asked my fellow painting students if this is true for them and they all said yes. Their suggestion; step away for a while and come back with fresh eyes.
1) A blank canvas. I usually feel nervous and excited with some fear sprinkled that I have no idea what I’m doing. It’s at this stage, I hesitate...I distract myself. Fear can do that.
Life: Have you ever been so immersed in something that felt painful like an argument, an upset customer, a relationship, project...that you could not come up with a solution? Stepping away and out of the situation allows you to gain a new perspective. Asking for help can remove the feeling of being alone in the process and may offer an innovative idea, or two, or more.
By Susan Cadley
3) Love it, paint over it or start a new piece. Life: No matter what happens in your life, you can begin again. If you allow fear to hold you back, you may believe you are protecting yourself but you are missing out on the buffet of choices life has to offer. And oh... all the luscious color, texture

Dental Radiography
ver the years we have seen significant advancements in veterinary dentistry. This has lead to better diagnostics and treatment for dental disease resulting in healthier, longer lives for our dogs and cats. One of the most important newer diagnostics has been dental x-rays.
SEND IN YOUR PET FOR “PET OF THE MONTH! Send to: PO BOX 644 Snellville, GA 30078 or life@ourtownmag.org
Dental x-rays in dogs and cats are similar to those performed in humans. But because of precise positioning and the need to place equipment in the mouth, anesthesia is required. With the development of digital x-rays, radiation exposure is kept to a minimum. In order to understand the importance of dental x-rays, it is necessary to realize that 2/3 of the teeth are below the gum line. In some cases, the visible portion of the tooth or gingiva (gum tissue) may give us a clue that there is a problem. However, x-rays are required in order for us to understand the exact nature or extent of the problem and determine the best possible treatment. For instance, a small fracture of a tooth may not appear to be causing any problems. But x-rays often reveal secondary abscesses at the root. Swelling of the face can also indicate a tooth root abscess but can be a symptom of a tumor. X-rays may be helpful to differentiate these diseases. Missing teeth can be an indication of impacted teeth. Over time these impacted teeth can result in destruction to the jaw bone. This diagnosis could not be made without x-rays. Dental x-rays may also be utilized prior to extracting teeth in order to predict any complications that may arise during extraction. They can also determine if teeth were completely removed following extractions. Melissa Finke, D.V.M. The Village Vets of Decatur
