Spotlight on Crook MMA. This month we speak to Richie Bonallie of Crook Mixed Martial Arts, which runs from the boys club at Glenholme in Crook. So Richie for those readers that have no idea what Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is, could you give us a little explanation of what is involved? Hello mate, basically MMA is a combat sport that allows all forms of striking and grappling arts such as kickboxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu to name a few. The UFC is the sports biggest promotion and I’m sure a lot of your readers have heard of the Irish fighter Conor McGregor. As mentioned you run from the boys club at Glenholme, how long have you been going? We started out in November 2018 and slowly but surely are beginning to build a team. I personally began MMA in 2010 and fight professionally as well as competing in almost every individual martial art at some point in the past. Since opening what has been your proudest moment? I fought and won my last fight in February representing Crook MMA for the first time along with my regular team TFT. For the fight I trained with my regular students every class and also joined in my fitness class which I run 3 mornings per week.

How can people get involved and do they need any experience? Anyone at any level, aged 13 or above is more than welcome. Feel free to message our Facebook page beforehand to introduce yourself if you like. The MMA classes are every Sunday from 1pm untill 2:30pm plus every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm untill 7:30pm. The fitness classes run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am untill 11am at Helmington Row Scout Hall. I also offer private tuition. Prices for the MMA class are £5 per session and the fitness classes are £4 per session. Lastly, where do you see the group going over the next 18 months? We have our first fighter Kieran competing soon and more to follow on from that. We would like to help put Crook on the map for positive reasons and give people a placeto better themselves and give their lives focus. I would like to thank Ian at Glenholme Centre for the opportunity, DJ Taxis’s for their support and everyone else who has helped me so far.

Slimming success Last month the Crook, Wolsingham and Willington Slimming World Groups celebrated their 12 greatest losers for 2019. Between them they had achieved an incredible 46st 11lb weight loss. The healthy eating plan is suitable for the whole family and gives you all a chance of a healthier future. The plan also empowers you to manage those things that aren’t so healthy so you can still have treats. We know that losing weight and maintaining that loss for good, takes more than simply changing the way we shop, cook and eat. We must also change the way we feel about food and ourselves. Our unique IMAGE Therapy is here to help you - it’s where all the Individual Motivation, Along with the Group’s powerfully supportive and shared Experiences, happens.

Slimming World takes a family-friendly approach - helping Mum’s and Dad’s take home healthy habits that the whole family benefit from. Currently we’re the only national organisation to offer real, practical help to children and teenagers in group. So do you want a healthier future for yourself and your family?? You know where we are we

would love to see you. Crook group member Laura Holliday showing off her before and after photographs.

Digging for Coal (part 2) Story by Aaron Cowen

The Industrial Revolution started in Great Britain around 1760, although this is often debated. As the Industrial Revolution took hold of society, there was an increasing demand for coal. Wood was replaced by coal for the manufacture of iron in the 18th century. Many of our forests, including the Forest of Brancepeth, (which at one time covered Crook and the surrounding areas) had been cleared for agriculture and settlement. In 1635, 1400 oak trees were felled to build the Sovereign of the Seas, the first triple decker in the British Royal Navy. Major developments in steam power were another major factor for the increased need for coal.

Colliery and the Remnants of Jobs Hill

main shaft.

The West Durham Railway opened in 1840. It joined the Clarence Railway (which opened in 1833) at Byers Green and went through Todd Hill, Sunnybrow, Helmington Row and on towards Old White Lea Colliery, which it had reached by 1841. The Bishop Auckland and Weardale line ran through Crook but was not opened until early 1844 with a temporary station built in 1843 with the intention to convert cottages at a later date. Instead it became the Goods Station for many years until the railway itself closed in 1963. These were eventually converted into Goods Station Cottages. Last month I wrote about early coal mining in our area but now with the revolutionary railroads, plans were now under way to extract our coal in mass quantities. Boring took place in the area, before the tracks were laid. In 1838, boring took place at Jobs Hill. “1845, August 23rd - On Saturday, upwards of forty workmen, belonging to Job’s Hill Colliery, were regaled with an excellent supper, at the house of Mr. George Linton, the Horse Shoe Inn, Crook, provided by their worthy masters, Messrs. Coulthard, of Gateshead, on the completion of their contract for sinking the above colliery, which has been carried down to the depth of 65 fathoms within a short period, without the slightest accident. Great credit is 16

due to the workmen as well as masters for their steady conduct and good behaviour during the time they have been so employed.” The new colliery belonged to Thomas Brown Esq. and others. The Seam was 4 feet 2 inches thick and of very rich quality but much harder than most around. It’s location along the West Durham Railway line, meant it had access to all the main outlets along the Tees. They even intended to erect an ironworks in the vicinity. Although I find no evidence that this ever actually happened.

In the distance you

can see the colliery

Brancepeth Colliery and White Lea Colliery, opened in 1840, Woodifield Colliery in 1843, Roddymoor Colliery in 1844, Bowden Close Colliery and Jobs Hill Colliery in 1845. Without the railways these collieries may never have opened. An accident at Hartley Colliery in 1862 meant that all collieries required two entries into a Coal Mine. Jobs Hill only had one and a further air shaft was provided and can be seen today as a green pipe sticking out of the ground near the road on the side of the cemetery. Helping the homeless... On Tuesday 30th April 2019 I will be raising money for CEO Sleepout by spending the night sleeping outside at Durham Cathedral. CEO Sleepout was created to help fight homelessness and poverty throughout the UK. Their fight is funded with money raised by business people who sleep outdoors for one night to raise sponsorship from their business contacts and friends. They hold lots of organised events throughout the country as well as here in the North East and are always looking to recruit business leaders, community leaders, owners, managers, execs and anyone who thinks they can raise a significant amount of funds, and who are willing to give up just one night of comfort. This will be the 2nd year running that I have slept

outside for CEO Sleepout. I really had my eyes opened last year when I took part, I was shocked at how cold it can get when out in the elements. It actually ended up being the last hard frost of the year. I need to raise £1000 and I’m currently way off that total, so can you please spare a couple of quid to help. I’d also like to thank all the readers that donated after the February & March editions of Out & About were delivered.
