Spotlight on Tow Law Community Foodbank. This month we speak to Patrick Wilkins as we shine the spotlight onto Tow Law Community Drop-in/Foodbank. Hi Patrick, tell us a little about the Tow law Community Drop-in/Foodbank? Our drop-in sessions are weekly Midday 2.30pm in Tow Law Community Centre. Each session also has the status of being ‘an emergency food box distribution point’ (EFB point), which we run on behalf of Durham Foodbanks. How do people
Any clients who require an emergency food box (either family or individual) will possibly have received a red voucher from another professional agency. We will process the voucher and exchange this for the appropriate food box. We are also able to issue our own vouchers when we recognise someone is in a genuine crisis and needs our assistance over the short term. Naturally, we maintain a discreet and sensitive approach at all times. How long have you been going?
qualify to be able to use the facilities?
We are now well established and have been running for 12 months. However, we are looking for more volunteers to sustain this community activity. Even if you can spare only a couple of hours a month this level of help would be much appreciated and you will be welcomed into our friendly team.
The sessions are open to all and are family friendly! Everyone is warmly welcome. No criteria needs to be met by anyone that pops in. The donated Greggs produce (now including sandwiches) is freely available to any visitor, although we welcome any donations. If anyone is facing a difficult situation the volunteers who run the session will listen and offer advice where we can. Home Group and Citizen’s Advice are regularly available too. Our stock of long date food items, hygiene products and toiletries are made easily available at every drop-in session. 12
What has been your proudest moment since you became involved with Tow law Community Drop-in/Foodbank? The first time we processed a ‘red voucher’ as an official foodbank, supporting a family in crisis, was a very rewarding moment for everyone involved. We are pleased to see the foodbank sessions actually happening in reality and now expanding in scope. We wouldn’t really describe ourselves as ‘proud’ - rather just

happy to help those in need! Where do you see the Tow law Community Drop-in/Foodbank going over the next 18 months? Over time, we hope more and more people get to know about our Thursday afternoon sessions and we become even more of an established focal point for the community and things going on in Tow Law. Although we are looking forward to a time when this service is not required at all! We also hope to continue to support and signpost people to the right sources of advice and assistance where we can.

Focusing on our past photographers Story by Aaron Cowen
Today we each take so many photographs, many probably get forgotten about. People certainly do not print photos like they used to and now everyone is a photographer. Once over however, photography was a very specialist job, and people would only have their photographs taken for special occasions, if at all. The very first photograph was taken in 1825 by the French Inventor, Joseph Niepce. The photo was a view through a window at Le Gras and the exposure took 8 hours onto a polished metal plate. Louis Daguerre came up with the Daguerreotype process which was released to the public in 1839 and used commercially until the late 1850s. Henry Fox Talbot managed to stabilize photographic negatives onto paper in 1835. Early sitters of photos would have to sit perfectly still for sometimes up to a minute and so they would be given head rests and arm rests to help support them. Typical late 19th century photos often show people stood with one arm leaning on a post. The history of photography is an interesting subject on its own, but how was it used in our area? Durham Viaduct The oldest and possibly the first photograph taken of Crook was in 1864 of men pulling down a fence in Crook Market Place. The photographer is unknown. In Durham City there are photographs of the viaduct under construction in 1855 and various photographs around the area at this time.
Thomas Henry Jackson was born in 1846 in Crook and was the son of Joseph Jackson and Ann Firbank. He was a photographer at 13 Dawson Street, Crook. Thomas started off around 1861 as a Tailors apprentice but by 1879 had taken up photography. CROOK CENTENARIAN. “Mrs. McMahon. born 19th December 1767, at Drumrany, County

Westmeath, Ireland. She has had three sons, and two daughters. Her eldest son, living with her now, is 75 years old. There are now living at the same time, at Crook, representatives of four generations of the family. The old lady has been obliged to lie in bed the last five months. Until that Thomas Henry Jackson time, she was able to visit her next-door neighbours.” The above was noted down by the photographer (Mr. Jackson) when he photographed Mrs. McMahon, which was during the summer of 1879. Mr. Jackson has the negative, and copies can be had. I find that this old lady died on the 1st day of December 1879, at the age of 112, and was interred in the burial ground adjoining the Roman Catholic Church, Crook. The Rev. Father Pippet buried her, and her son, mentioned above, died about twelve months after, and is also interred in the same place. The old lady lived to see her Great-great grandchild, there being thus five generations living. Myles Taylor, Crook. Thomas was last seen in Crook in 1892 as a photographer. He had moved to Bradford by 1901 and had returned to tailoring. He was likely unable to compete with the next Crook photographer. That photographer was James Fairclough born on 1st January 1869 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and was Crooks most successful early photographer. He was based in Manor House Studios in what is now Little Gem

Nursery in North Terrace. In 1881, James was a scholar. His father, Phillip was an Engine Fitter, but his sister Mary who was 2 years older than James was a Photographic Printer. They were living in Westgate, Northumberland. In 1891 James is in Berwick upon Tweed as a lodger and now states that he is an Artistic Photographer, and James’ father, Phillip was also a photographer at 30 Scotswood Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. He also exhibited Magic Lantern shows. One such showing appeared in 1890 in Seaton Delavil. In 1892, James was ordered to return a painting of Berwick Bridge he had done by Berwick School of Art. He had won £4 in a competition there and his work was to become part of an art exhibition. By 1901 James was at his Manor House Studios in Crook. He was also there in 1911 and 1914, but by 1939 had retired to 44 Cypress Road, Redcar, where he died in 1948. Percy Bertwhistle Jackson was born on 27th December 1897 in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire and had taken over the business at Manor House Studios. He was there in 1939. Percy was photographing in Crook well into the 1950s. He died in 1979. In 1868 Mr Coates took photos of a model for the church tower at St. Stephens Church in Willington. This was likely, John Coates of High Street Willington who was a printer. His son Herbert Coates was born in 1874 in Willington and became a photographer probably in the 1890s and took many photos of the local area. He died in 1960. In the last edition of Out & About there was a photograph by a Jno. Smith

apparently taken in Crook. A John Smith born in 1884 in Gateshead was a photographer in 1911, living in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Very little is known of this photographer. John George Gowland was born in 1879 and appears to have dabbled in Photography. He was generally a draper at 10 Church Street Crook. The building was known as Crook House and today is Kidzone. Strange how two photography connected buildings are now childcare places. During the War, John was also a Special Constable. His father John Hedley Gowland was also a tent and marquee proprietor as well as a Draper. John junior died in 1965 at Homelands Hospital. Today, Ritchie Coatsworth has his studio at the bottom of Hope Street, of course, Ritchie is also responsible for this magazine. He took over from Forever Memories in 2016. There are of course today, many many photographers, both professional and amateur. Without such images history just would not be the same.

It is becoming more and more common for people to choose vehicles that isn’t the traditional style hearse for their final journey.
What would your final journey be made in? There are Morris Minors, VW Campervans, Landrovers, commercial vehicles - buses, lorries and even a milk float, perhaps signifying a loved one’s career. For those who perhaps seek an alternative approach to the more traditional funeral transport. Crook 01388 765 069 www.hardysfunerals.co.uk Willington 01388 747 747
