Spotlight on Mick’s Boxing Gym. This month we revisit Mick’s Boxing Gym which has taken Crook by storm since opening in February 2017. So Mick it’s been a while since we last spoke. How are things going? Yeah it’s been a while mate, the gym’s doing amazingly well, we’ve had to separate the members into 3 classes. The first one through the doors are the juniors (under 8), the little kids in this class are awesome, the changes I see in them as their confidence comes through is unreal. As an example a junior walks in with Mam or Dad (sometimes both) and the story is usually the same they cling to the parent a little bit at first but soon see what the other juniors are doing and join in. Although a bit shy and quiet for the first few sessions they are just as much part of the team as the rest of the juniors. Now the same kids walk in hyped up, bursting with confidence and can’t wait to train, it’s awesome. The second group are the under 16’s (a mixed bunch of youngsters from Crook and surrounding areas). This group have achieved amazing results since we last spoke, I can’t praise them enough. Bare in mind that the youngsters of Crook get a tough break from people sitting in armchairs on social media complaining about kids hanging around here or kids hanging around there. I hear it all the time and to be honest it aggravates me, let’s be honest Ritchie there’s not a lot around here for them, yes the skate park is there, but that’s not for everyone plus it’s freezing at the minute. Imagine this Ritchie, the same people that sit and complain actually get up and get behind me and help me to get a bigger

place, more equipment and better facilities. It would be awesome to give all the youngsters a place to go and to do something really positive. You should see how quick these kids are changing through training, they all more confident, they all disciplined, they all absolutely love training. I could sit here and praise them six days a week and twice on a Sunday. The last group is the adults class, made up of men, woman and a handful of youngsters. This group is like family to me, we have lads and lasses that come to prepare for fights, we have people that come just for fitness and we have both beginners and experienced fighters. Some of the parents that bring there kids to the earlier classes stay back and train with us. I mix up the work outs so it caters for everyone, nobody is left out, I guess we have a really great team mindset. Everyone helps out and everyone comes together and has each other’s backs. I personally wouldn’t swap them for anything, they really do treat me like family, at Christmas I had so many offers to go round for Christmas dinner or a few drinks it was unreal. Anyone reading this interview and thinking they’d like to come see what we’re about, get yourself down you more than welcome. You’ve had a lot of successes since opening, what has been your proudest moment to date? We’ve had a lot of success but the answer to your question isn’t simple, there’s too many for different reasons. The first thing to come to mind is when my good friends Jimmy and Tommy Ward come over and see the kids, honestly the kids go nuts for photos with Tommy. There’s also the time we did the food bank nomination before Christmas, ours

was literally done in 24 hours... it was really random. I was on the phone to Jimmy Ward just having the crack like mates do, anyway he starts telling me he’s been and done this food bank thing. I didn’t know what it was at first but thought wow what a great idea, let’s get behind it. Next thing I put a post on Facebook saying we are donating

tomorrow nights subs to the homeless and anyone who wants to come do the food shop after training is welcome. The next nights training was crazy with food everywhere, people that don’t even come to the gym were walking in with bits of shopping. After training we all headed to Tesco, there’s a video on the gym page somewhere. Another great moment was when my good mate Andrew Howard at S&A Builders Merchants in Crook funded our #TeamWard competition. I asked all the kids parents that got there photo took with Tommy to post them on our Facebook page and whoever got the most likes and shares won a hoody. What they didn’t know at the time was that Andrew was behind the competition and he bought every kid that entered a hoody. Honestly I could sit here all day and tell you my proudest moments it all depends on what you’d perceive as a proud moment, putting the key in the gym door and watching the first kid walk in means as much as watching Aydan Bowers win a title last year after coming back from a knife attack that almost killed him. Seeing adults walk in the gym overweight and out of shape then over the course of a few months they lose weight and gain confidence means as much as training a teenager who you know fine well is a right wrongen. Everyone else has written them off and through boxing they change into a respectful youngster who now does nothing but train and doesn’t have the Police at their Mam’s every week. It’s impossible to list everything or to put them in order.

How can people get involved and what does it cost? The easiest way to get involved is basically just turn up, I get inbox after inbox from men and women who want to come. They usually ask the same questions... how much is it? where is it? what equipment do I need? I have this much experience, I have no experience will I be okay? are there any joining fees? Etc... I’d say for every 50 messages I get and sit and reply to there are maybe 4 or 5 that turn up. The reason for this is simple... lack of confidence, the hardest thing is walking through the gym doors for the first time. People are always afraid of the unknown, they want to try and lose some weight but are unsure how it’s gonna go when you walk into a room of people to train and you don’t know anyone. Maybe you know Spencer, Michael Scott, Bessy or work with Thomas Rooney but don’t feel completely comfortable going boxing because your other mate at work says, “boxing’s hard “ or “you should go this or do that”. Let me tell you this, don’t listen to your other mate, in fact your other mate is not even your friend if they are really negative, negative people are a cancer and you should stay away from them. If you want to come and give the gym a try it’s on Grey Street in Crook. Adults are £3 and youngsters are £2. You don’t need any equipment because we have everything here and I’ll tell anyone reading this now that if you do come, it will be one of the best decisions you will make. You will fell better about yourself and will be welcomed and made part of the team. This is the best bit, if you do come and train, finish the work out and can honestly say that it wasn’t for you then I’ll personally give you your money back, no problem. Lastly, where do you see the boxing gym going over the next 18 months? Funnily enough myself and Michael Bestford attended a meeting recently and there are massive things ahead for Mick’s Boxing Gym. I can’t say much about it at the moment but what I will say is you will be the first to know when we can make it public, Out & About Magazine has been behind us from the start and I can’t thank you enough, thanks everyone for your support.

Helping the homeless... On Tuesday 30th April 2019 I will be raising money for CEO Sleepout by spending the night sleeping outside at Durham Cathedral. CEO Sleepout was created to help fight homelessness and poverty throughout the UK. Their fight is funded with money raised by business people who sleep outdoors for one night to raise sponsorship from their business contacts and friends. They hold lots of organised events throughout the country as well as here in the North East and are always looking to recruit business leaders, community leaders, owners, managers, execs and anyone who thinks they can raise a significant amount of funds, and who are willing to give up just one night of comfort.

This will be the 2nd year running that I have slept outside for CEO Sleepout. I really had my eyes opened last year when I took part, I was shocked at how cold it can get when out in the elements. It actually ended up being the last hard frost of the year. I need to raise £1000 so can you please spare a couple of quid to help. My bed from last

years event.
