Spotlight on The Wear Valley Slimming World Group. This month we shine the spotlight on The Wear Valley Slimming World Group, Consultant Christine Rumbold answers our questions. Hi Christine, tell us a little bit about the Slimming World Groups you are involved with. I have the privilege of being a Slimming World Consultant for Crook Tuesday 5pm & 7pm groups along with my colleague Angie Dinsdale who runs Crook Tuesday 8:30am & 10:30am. I became a member 5 years ago at Barbara Turnbull’s Thursday Wolsingham group, it changed my husbands and my life after jointly losing over 6 stone. I felt my future had been re-written, I had energy, renewed confidence and reduced back
them away to a happier, healthier, forever future. Along with their consultant, other group members will support, motivate and inspire them as well as sharing lots of fabulous menu ideas and recipes. Is it open to all ages and both men and women and how much is it? Everyone is welcome to our groups we work with the acknowledgment of doctors and midwives to support any member to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Anyone is welcome to listen to our new member talk and experience our group image therapy before committing to joining. Weekly fees are £4.95 (£4.65 over 60), joining cost can vary according to the current offers at present it is £5 but there are free membership vouchers at times in magazines. Tell us a little about your proudest moments? I am so privileged like every consultant ! Every week we feel so much pride whether it is a member delighted with their weight loss or taking part in an activity they never dreamed they could. There are too many proud moments but two of our members in the Weardale district have achieved success this year in very different ways and are both happy to share their stories.
pain. I knew that I wanted to help other people to improve their futures, so I became a consultant in 2018 and love every minute. What sort of help and advice can your groups offer people? We know how painful it is to feel burdened by excess weight. We also understand the misery of going hungry, being deprived of your favourite food or forced to eat separate from the family. We introduce them to a healthy eating plan they will love without ever going hungry, one suitable for the whole family. A support system that’ll blow 12
Kathryn Coatsworth from Tow Low, was delighted to discover a new baby on the way but learning from past experience she was determined this time to take control of her weight gain. So she kept going to the Wolsingham group every single week, following Slimming World’s unique pregnancy plan in conjunction with her midwife. This is Kathryn’s story: “In March 2019 I joined the group and was determined to get to my dream weight. However a couple of weeks later I found out I was expecting my 3rd baby. I decided that I wanted to continue with Slimming World and follow their pregnancy plan as it encouraged healthy eating and I also wanted to minimise the amount of weight I gained during my

pregnancy. Although it wasn’t always easy I’m so pleased that I continued with my Slimming World journey as all the weight that I had gained in 40 weeks of pregnancy I lost at my first weigh in shortly after giving birth to our beautiful daughter Ivy-Rose. Stepping on those scales and seeing how much weight I had lost made continuing my journey so worthwhile and I’m now looking forward to getting to target in 2020”.
and feeling so much happier, healthier and thankful for my Slimming World family. On the 4th January 2020 I ran my first ever park run at Hardwick Park. Hoping that this’ll become regular body magic.” Amanda did get her job and has done another park run. Following a healthy lifestyle of a nutritionally balanced eating plan and regular exercise can give everyone a healthier, happier more active future. Give yourself and your family the best possible future! The wee Battle that made Neville Cross! Story by Aaron Cowen
It is something that I often say to my kids, “Why is Neville Cross?” as I pass through the little village. But enough of the Dad jokes. Our area has seen its fair share of battles and skirmishes over the years and our most famous confirmed Battle was at Neville’s Cross, which took place in 1346. (I say confirmed since there is a theory circulating at the moment that the Battle of Brunanburh took place at Hunwick in 937 AD) This period of time became known as the Hundred Years War which began in April 1337. The French wanted to confiscate Gascony from the English King Edward III. Edward responded by claiming the French Throne on the grounds of his decent, through his mother, Isabella of France. The French made successful naval raids at Southampton, Portsmouth, The Channel Islands and several of the Cinque Ports. King Edward III However, Edward gained victory at the Battle of Slurs fought on 22nd June 1340. It was not until the summer of 1346 that Edward was ready to launch a major offensive into France. He landed in Normandy and captured Caen and then engaged King Phillip of France’s forces at the Battle of Crécy on 26th August 1346. The outcome was a disaster for the French. He moved north, unstoppable and besieged Calais. The French sought help from Scotland under the Auld Alliance signed in 1295 and renewed in 1326 during the heyday of King Robert the Bruce. However, France failed to come to Scotland’s 16

defence in 1332 at the start of the Second War for Scottish Independence. King David II of Scotland had been forced to flee to France following the English victory at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.
However, with Edward’s sights now on a richer continental war, Scotland was left alone allowing King David to return in 1341. He wanted revenge and so he enthusiastically accepted the French request for support and began preparations for his invasion of the North of England. In early October 1346, David invaded, reducing various strongholds and sacking Lanercost and Hexham Abbeys. By 16th October he was in the vicinity of Durham. But since Durham was so well defended, he held back at nearby Bearpark. Since King Edward III was busy in France, the Scots did not expect any kind of response to their attack. The defence of Northern England rested on Ralph Neville, Baron Neville de Raby and Henry Percy, Baron Percy. The Bishops of Durham would normally also defend the area at the time, however, the incumbent at the time, Bishop Hatfield was on his jollies with King Edward III in France. So instead the Archbishop of York, William de Zouch filled his shoes. These three men summoned an army drawn from all the counties North of the River Trent

SATURDAY 14TH MARCH AT 7:30PM IN THE CLUBHOUSE
ordering them to assemble at Auckland Castle. The 10 to 15,000 men including cavalry and archers marched out on the morning of 17th October 1346. On the way at Merrington they encountered a Scottish Raiding Party led by Sir William Douglas. A battle ensued with the Scots suffering 300 casualties and retreating back to their camp at Bearpark or Beaurepaire as it was known then. Douglas informed the King that a large English army was in the vicinity. Suggestions to retreat fell on deaf ears since King David did not believe that the English could have mustered such a large army in such a small space of time. David’s army marched South East from Bearpark in what was expected to be a relatively small English Force. Meanwhile the English had picked their spot ready to engage the Scots in Battle.
