Spotlight on Sunniside Community Centre. This month we shine the spotlight on Sunniside Community Centre, Treasurer Liz Mather answers our questions. Hi Liz, tell us a little bit about Sunniside Community Centre. Sunniside is an ex coal mining village in County Durham and suffers from many of the problems that effect rural areas including lack of investment, hardship and isolation, despite this there is a strong sense of identity. At the heart of the village is the community centre which is the focus for a variety of different activities and groups. In the late 1970s a row of four cottages facing the recreation area was converted into a community centre and this building, much improved, has been used subsequently for a wide range of activities for all ages. All committee members are volunteers, no one is paid; we all share a wish to keep our only community resource going and our love for our village. What sort of activities and events are held at the community centre? The centre is used all year round; our focus is to provide a range of activities, bring the community together and improve our environment. This includes: creating a community garden, a seating picnic area, planting 800 daffodil bulbs, fruit trees, oval raised beds and flower boxes at the entrances of the village. We have also placed bird feeders, insect boxes and hedgehog boxes in our community garden. In 2019 we transformed our overgrown and neglected back yard to create a beautiful rear garden with a double

barbecue to hire out to residents. Several villagers have completed over 300 police volunteer speed watch hours, making motorists aware of keeping to the speed limit whilst travelling through Sunniside. The community association have also purchased two large Roadside signs to highlight Speedwatch awareness. Our regularly updated Facebook page ‘welovesunniside’ which has over 350 members and our notice board keeps villagers aware of future activities. We have a well used gym for villagers over 18 years at a cost of £35 per year membership. Centre activities include bingo, keep fit, meditation, sound healing, sewing group, baking and a range of craft activities. We organise Summer fairs, barbecues, disco’s, Easter, Halloween and Christmas events all free to residents as well as annual Remembrance Day activities. In 2019 we also hosted successful employability courses in English, Maths and ICT. Our ten week Time to Shine project was highly successful at bringing together women of all ages, backgrounds and life experience. Before the project began we spoke with each individual and designed the course based on what each person wanted and needed; including; art, creative writing, baking, photography, paper-crafts and sewing. Some members of the group

Our local councillor Richard Manchester has supported the village in the purchase of a defibrillator to be erected to the outside wall of the community centre, training of residents in CPR training and how to use a defibrillator will be offered to all interested. Tell us a little about the community centre and what you have to offer. wanted to improve their vocational prospects and by the end of the project they all achieved qualifications and certificates such as team leading, customer service, enterprise, English and maths; this provided a springboard to ongoing learning and education. The best thing about this project was the visible increase in confidence and self-esteem brought about through recognising personal talents and gifts, not to mention the friendships formed and incredible mutual support given and received by each participant. This was a truly magical project with fantastic outcomes for all involved. Feedback was incredible, one example here speaks about the impact for one participant; “An overwhelming sense of belonging and community spirit. My confidence has improved within myself and with my creativity. I have felt unjudged and accepted which has improved my wellbeing. My general mental health has improved since attending and I have started to attend other groups”. In the summer holidays we organised a trip to South Shields for all children from the Hilltop Villages. 56 parents and children attended free and all had a great time. In 2017 we launched our Community Resource Centre which rivals any charity shop but is cheaper. It brings in much needed income and provides to any one who visits the centre with a selection of quality clothes, shoes, household items, books, toys, games etc. Committee members staff the resource both in the Centre and at a number of fairs. In 2019 we raised over £1,000.
The Centre creates opportunities for members of the community to be involved in activities and community priorities. This helps build relationships across a broad age range and shares knowledge, skills and talents. We provide opportunities such as basic ICT courses for those who are isolated and provide access to the internet to meet their personal needs (such as shopping, staying in touch with relatives etc). We wish to do more by providing opportunities for individuals to develop creative skills in a protected space. How can people get involved with the community centre? We would love new faces on the Sunniside community association, any resident is welcome to attend any or all committee meetings. Please contact us personally, by phone, email or Facebook for further information or to hire rooms for parties. The committee have raised £30,000 over the last four years to purchase a children’s play area, which is now being built on the recreation ground adjoining the centre. Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
