Spotlight on Crook Cricket Club. This month we speak to David Nevins as we shine the spotlight onto Crook Cricket Club. Hi David, tell us a little bit about your cricketing background and how you become involved with Crook Cricket Club? Following a lifetime as a professional cricketer, Crook CC approached me to get involved 5 years ago. The club was in the process of winding up and the doors being locked. It seemed important to me that this vital facility was needed in our rural community. The members invited me to take on the task of its redevelopment. This honour I was glad to accept and became chairman and we set a 5 year plan with its mission to become “A premier club at the heart of the community, developing local players with a ground and clubhouse to match. How have things been going on the field for your various teams over the last couple of years? One of the best decisions was to involve Andrew Pratt and Stephen Chapman in the project, both are Crook boys who were first class professionals and were willing to give back something to the game that had given them so much. These two professionals have developed our coaching programme from basic 7 year olds through to senior level. This has resulted in four of our youngsters developing and achieving county standard, something unpresidented by any one club. Last year, following year 5 of our 5 year plan, we achieved premier club status, which I have to admit was earlier than expected, 12

but all players played above themselves to allow us to achieve this. The clubhouse has gone through a large refurbishment over the last 18 months, tell us a little bit about how this can take the club forward. It was obvious at the start of the 5 year plan, that the clubhouse and ground were sadly in need of redevelopment, however its position at the centre of town enabled us to set up a community hub easily accessible for community groups to access a new facility. This change allowed new and previously unknown groups to get involved in our project, something that is particulary important to me personally. The success of this and the support of Sport England, our local council and various businesses within the area has enabled us to do a complete refurbishment and bring this facility up to a high standard. Now we have become a central venue to host weddings, christenings, anniversary parties etc, as well as being a family orientated venue with great outdoor facilites. This has allowed us to become financially sustainable. What has been the Cricket Club’s proudest moments since you became involved? From the position we found ourselves in 2014 and to see the youngsters we’ve developed into county standard players, was personally most satisfying. This and the acculumation of

achieving our mission to get premier status was the icing on the cake. I can never thank all of those volunteers who have given their time, effort and support enough, as this has enabled us to achieve our goal. Where do you see the club as a whole going over the next 18 months. From the cricket side it is important that we establish our position in the Premier Division and Andrew Pratt, our cricket director is tasked with this. The clubs direction now with premier status will focus heavily in the next 5 year plan on players development, ground development, and stabalising our finances to achieve this. Stephen Chapman, our now Chairman is tasked with this objective. I am confident he is the right person to move this forward. It is only with our local support, which we have had in abundance, we can really achieve the major goal of turning this club into the sleeping giant I have always maintained it can be. I have now been honoured to become president, my task is to enable these special people to have all they need in the pursuit of our mission. If you’d like to get involved with Crook Cricket Club contact: David Nevins - President on 07709 539 716 or our Function Co-ordinator Catherine MaCleod – 07454 313 625.

Forgotten stories Story by Ritchie Coatsworth

I am a firm believer in that loved ones are never really gone until there’s nobody left that talks about them anymore. With that in mind I feel it’s important to keep talking so that stories are passed from generation to generation and these people that you may never have met remain in our memories. My Granda, John Coatsworth Senior died when I was only 5 years old way back in 1985. Although I was very young I still retain some memories of me and him when I was really small. He had been called up to serve in the Black Watch during World War 2, seeing action in both Italy and Africa. I have photos of him during this period in his uniform, but as I was so young when he died I hadn’t heard stories from this period. My Dad never spoke of any so I assume he hadn’t heard any either. After the death of another relative in May I was told a story that I can’t believe I’d never heard before during my 39 years on this planet. Firstly, when he was serving in the war his family were twice sent letters saying that he was missing in action and presumed dead, only for a few weeks later to receive a letter saying what he was up to, which was dated after the missing in action letter. The main story was from during a particularly long battle in the African Desert. As my Granda was a large man he was given the gruelling job of carrying a Bren gun along with its ammunition and stand around the desert. During this long and exhausting battle my Granda fell asleep slumped over where he was seated only to wake hours later in the darkness to find he was alone in the desert. His battalion had left him for dead and moved on, the reality was he had just fallen asleep exhausted. That evening he set off across the desert looking for his colleagues. Worried about being stranded and easy to spot by the enemy once daylight 16

arrived he found a burnt-out vehicle to seek refuge in. Once comfortable he started to drift off to sleep only to be startled by something touching his ankles and something in the darkness next to his throat. Then he heard someone from behind say, “It’s okay Jonny I’m a Gurkha”. The Gurkha had actually been feeling how his boots were laced while holding a knife at his throat. This was because the German soldiers laced their boots differently to the allied soldiers, so in the darkness this was the easiest way to identify which side a man was on. Thankfully after successfully passing the boot lace test my Granda was given instructions on how to get back to base, by walking in a straight line between 2 distant landmarks on the horizon, he was told that by doing this the allied soldiers would know he was one of them and not shoot at him plus he would also avoid the land-mines that had been set at either side of the route. Since hearing this story, I have now passed this onto my little ones who love to hear it and will hopefully keep the story alive by telling their children in years to come. It’s nice that they now have an exciting story to go with the photo on the wall of my Granda in his Black Watch uniform. It just goes to show that it’s important to keep talking and keeping those stories going no matter how old they are. The Bren gun with it’s stand and ammunition.
