Spotlight on Spectrum Spartans. This month we shine the spotlight on Spectrum Spartans Roller Hockey Club, Lisa Horner answers our questions. Hi Lisa, tell us a little bit about the Spectrum Spartans. Spectrum Leisure Centre opened its doors in 1982 and became a focal point for the community. As one of our coaches, David Giblin, told me, him and a few friends would go to the roller disco and when a suggestions box was put out, they asked for roller hockey sessions. They used plastic sticks, skates that you would strap over your shoes to hold them on and shin guards made from cut down drainpipes and foam! After practising for a few months they were joined by another of our coaches, Stephen Robinson and a few other lads. David and his friends were to move on to ice hockey and Stephen stayed to play for the newly founded Spectrum Spartans. Stephen also went on to play for the England Youth Team. In 2014, Stephen and David wanted to get back into the sport and re-launched Spectrum Spartans. As well as playing in the Elites Team, they also set up children’s teams, passing on their shared passion for the sport. I got involved when my son Matthew was approached at one of the roller disco sessions and asked if he would like to stay for the roller hockey training, which he did. He was a little 12
unsteady at first but soon got the hang of it. He’s been playing since 2016. What sort of age range is your team and what sort of competitions do you play in? We have three teams now; The Elites, Under 15’s and Under 13’s. They play against other teams in our Northern Region and also in the annual InterRegional Competition against other regional teams made up of players from all over the country, which is held in Peterborough. We’d like to see more children coming along to our training sessions. It would be nice to be able to have more teams; Under 9’s and Under 11’s. What’s been some of your highlights over the years that you have been involved? Our Under 15’s goalkeeper Bailey Marshall, whilst attending last year’s Inter-Regional Competition, was approached by Carlos Amaral, Coaching Director for England. He was invited to start training for the Under 15’s England Team. Hopefully he will get the opportunity to represent England in the 2019 championships. Some of our other children have also been to additional training sessions, both in the region

and at Peterborough. There are ample opportunities for them to improve their skills, with the possibility of playing for their country. Only recently, our Under 13’s team played in the regions Cup Qualifiers, beating off some tough competition from Middlesbrough and Manchester, to secure a place in the Cup Finals against Grimsby. This will be held at Middlesbrough on Sunday 23rd June 2019. The team are very excited and will be hoping for a win on the day! We also have our “Presentation Night” once all the tournaments have been played. It’s a fun night for all, with games and raffles to be won. Medals and trophies are awarded to celebrate outstanding achievements. All are welcome to celebrate with us. Details will be posted for upcoming events on our Spectrum Roller Hockey Facebook page. How can people get involved and what does it cost? Anybody who is interested, adults and children alike, can come along and join us at Spectrum Leisure Centre in Willington. We train every Saturday from 12.00pm - 1.00pm, following on from the roller disco sessions. We are currently offering the first four sessions free and the price thereafter is £2.00 per player per session. If you are interested in being involved you can contact Lisa Horner 07792 38559.

Pubs Galore! Story by Aaron Cowen
This month we take a look at the many pubs, clubs and drinking establishments that Crook once boasted. Crook once had supposedly the greatest number of pubs in the country compared to it’s size of population, once boasting 37 drinking establishments at one point in time.
Thomas Milburn who gave his name to Milburn Street. Before Hope Street was built, there was a narrow lane here known as the Black Lonnen due to a black slimy pond on the site.
There have been 42 separate premises used as a pub or a club. These venues include within the areas of Crook, Helmington Row and Rumby Hill. Today this figure has been more than halved to only a modest 13. Trying to give a comprehensive list is somewhat dangerous as people are bound to think of one, I have missed off. However, here goes.
In North Terrace we should consider the current R.A.F.A. Spitfire Club which was once Prospect House belonging to a local councillor by the name of Farrar Morson.
In Commercial Street there was The Commercial Hotel, which became Jelly’s Bar then Lotty’s Bar and now is Elliot’s Bar and Restaurant. The Royal Oak, now a house. The Loves Hotel now flats. The Crown Hotel and the Queens Head Hotel which still exist and of course on the corner of Hope Street was the well-known Royal Corner Hotel. A little further along West Road was the Railway Tavern which became known as the Sunbeam Hotel. In Hope Street there was The Golden Fleece now converted into office space. The Crook Hotel, which for a time became Bar 56 and is now once again The Crook Hotel. Part of it became The Circuit. A little further down we now have the Corner House in a newly built premises, where a Snooker Hall once stood and later for a long time a wallpaper shop. The shop on the ground floor was originally part of Mazzuchi’s Jewellers. The Vault – a new pub to the town, which was originally a Bank, hence the name. The building stood empty for a lot of years before it was converted.
The Sunbeam Hotel
The White Swan Hotel aka the Mucky Duck and The Kings Head, also once named the Kings Arms. During the War the establishment was said to be a house of ill repute. It was once owned by a 16
In Mill Street we have of course the Mill House Inn. Standing a couple of doors down from the original Corn Mill, this was probably not the original House to the old Mill. It was for a long time owned by the Eccleston’s. Charles died leaving his wife Jane to run the business for many years. Many Catholics were chased out of the premises by Catholic Priest Augustine Pippet who did not like his congregation being drinkers. Church Hill had The Balaclava aka The Ballarat due to the rats in the neighbouring beck. It was a working pub in 1854 and the owner at the time had a nephew in the Crimean War and at the Battle of Balaclava. Today it is a house. On Wheatbottom - we have going upwards, The Three Blue Bells Inn. Today the building is flats. Belle Vue Working Mens Club. Yes. This is where the Club first began its career before moving to Glenholme (Now a care home) and then to its current location just off Commercial Street. Further up the hill is the Travellers Rest. Then the now demolished Wheatbottom Inn. Across the road near to the current Community Hub was the Princess of Wales Pub, whose cellar was found while building the sub station there.
The Wheatbottom Inn
Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.
Princess of Wales
At Jobs Hill there was the Colliery Inn. There was also a Colliery Inn (now a House) at Prospect Road opposite Metal Link. The Jobs Hill incarnation is now known as the Copper Mine. No Copper Mines here though, but nice food! In Addison Street once known as Cross Row was The Coach and Horses which has recently changed into a shop. In Arthur Street was The Alexandria. The frontage was in The Alexandria existence for many years until its recent modernisation. Further up on the corner of Arthur Street and Wilson Street was the Gas House. This was built next to the now long-gone Silver Street according to old deeds for the premises. The Victoria Hotel was at the top of Victoria Street and Nelson Street. Now demolished. Waterloo Close is now on the site.
I have also been told that there was a pub or beer house in Bell Street, however we can not find anything on it. We had the Croft Social Club, once known as the Beehive, which was originally the Durham Light Infantry Drill Hall. In Mown Meadows was the Uplands Hotel which was originally a doctor’s
The Uplands Hotel residence. This has since been demolished for houses. The Farrars Arms stands at Bankfoot which was named after either Farrar Morson or Farrar Wren. Both Farrars were landowners in the area.
The Gas House
On Church Street is the well known Horse Shoe Inn. The oldest building in Crook, although some say an old crofters’ cottage to the rear of Commercial Street is older. The Shoe was certainly in existence in 1787 and a date of 1822 above the door commemorates the owners at the time of George and Eleanor Linton’s marriage. A little further was the Royal Sun Inn which had its own brewery owned by Alexander Rutherford. Built in 1843, it is currently Viva Italian Restaurant. The Board Inn was where The Indian Cottage and Robinsons Butchers are currently. Around the corner is the Surtees Hotel still often referred to as the Scott’s. John Scott had the pub from 1910 until at
least 1938. The Surtees was opened in 1867 by a Mr. B. Laws.
The Board Inn
In the Hollow near Howden-le-Wear was the Grey Horse. At Rumby Hill an old map mentions another Grey Horse Pub, however this may be an error, although there was a Fox and Hounds Public House here. In Helmington Row was the Shoulder of Mutton, the Helmington Tavern or Helmington Inn and at Bowden Close there was The Bowden Inn, known as the Jerry. Near Steels Houses was also the Bay Horse known as the Kickin’ Cuddy. The building is of 18th century origin which once belonged to John Linton, brother to George who had the Horse Shoe. Here was once held the World Hand Ball Championships and the Ball Alley Wall can still be seen to this day. A Ball Alley was also in existence at the Sunbeam Hotel. We currently have the Millfield Ground, the Cricket Ground and the Golf Club which sells alcohol. Perhaps Bargain Booze which was originally the Constitutional Club built in 1901 also sold alcohol?

Music at funerals can raise a smile, produce a tear or both.... A service to honour the life of a loved one that has passed away would be incomplete without music. However it is quite hard to find the appropriate songs for a loved one’s funeral. Sometimes they have had a favourite artist or a favourite song and have made this an easier task for you. Sometimes you need to think what they would have liked poignant, happy or their favourite theme tune from a TV programme. For examples of music please look at our website.
