Spotlight on the Friendly Club. This month we shine a light on the Friendly Club which is held in St. Andrew’s Church, Dawson Street in Crook. Could you tell us a little bit about what the friendly club do and how they began? The Friendly Club originated as Crook Mother’s Club, founded 71 years ago by Nurse Cecily Hull at Crook Baby Clinic. She was a very forwardthinking lady and realised that young mums needed, in the modern parlance, some ‘me time’. The aim of the club was to enable young mothers to have a social evening away from babies and families, giving them time to relax, chat, and pass on tips for caring for their youngsters.
also put on small shows for members across the years, everything from sketch reviews to monologues, the most recent being a pantomime, which the members enjoyed with great hilarity.
Now known as Crook Friendly Club, we meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm in a warm and comfortable room in St. Andrew’s Church, Dawson Street, Crook. The meetings are very varied, we invite speakers who give talks on many interesting topics, hold demonstrations of crafts etc. We also organise visits to the theatre and enjoy meals out.
We extend a warm welcome to all, come and join us on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday in every month, our meetings cost £2 and include tea and biscuits (sometimes a home baked scone) and a free raffle.
We additionally can make our own amusements, holding quizzes, bring and buy charity nights, and competitions. Our own Entertainment Group have
A club outing to a royal themed tea room. 12
Committee members with the club founder Nurse Hull cutting the cake.
Firm friendships were formed, and original members, now grandmothers and greatgrandmothers still attend to this day, together with others now living alone and their extended family members and friends. We continue to meet, still relaxing, chatting, and passing on tips that help in our daily lives.
How can people get involved and what does it cost?
Come and make new friends, just turn up at St. Andrew’s, Dawson Street or contact our secretary on 01388 764 301 for more information.

Digging for Coal (part 1) Story by Aaron Cowen
In 1811 Crook was a mere hamlet consisting of a population of 176. The majority of these people were employed at that time in agriculture. By 1841 the population jumped to 538. Crook had a wealth of coal which had been used locally for centuries, with evidence that even the Romans were making use of our Coal reserves. In 1311 Grant, for a sum, by John de Amundeville to Roger son of Roger son of Katherine of all his land in the field of Hertkeld towards the north, from the thorn on the west of the field to the dyke on the south, extending for the ploughland (arura) of one plough for digging an iron mine and coals if found with free entry and exit. Hertkeld, refers to Hargill in Howden-le-Wear. There is a house there known today as Fir Tree Grange, which was originally named Smelt House. Its origins date back to at least 1511 and in 1587 a Henry Jackson a Yeoman, left three farms to his three sons. Coal was of course needed for smelting since it was more efficient than burning wood.
On 7th December 1776 the Newcastle Chronicle states: “To be sold by private contract, or by auction, on Thursday the 26th Day of December inst. (if not sold before, of which notice will be given) at Miss Dunn’s in Bishop Auckland, a copyhold farm and housing at Low Bitchburn, now occupied by Thomas Snawdon, at the yearly rent of 181. A copyhold house and lose, and an allotment of common at Hargill Hill, now also occupied by Thomas Snawdon. A copyhold house and garth, and allotment of common, called Fir Tree now occupied by Robert Raw. Also, Hargill Colliery and Cold Knott Colliery, and a Millstone Quarry upon Witton Common; all held by lease for 21 Years under the Lord Bishop of Durham, dated Oct. 24, 1774. Thomas Snawdon, of Bitchburn, will show the premises; and Mr Hodgson, of Bishop Auckland, (the owner) will treat about the same.” In 1916 Edward Lloyd wrote, “About the year 1800, High Woodifield Colliery belonged to Mrs Pearson. It was ten fathoms deep, and employed six men. The output of coals was about 2,200 chaldrons, or about 2,800 tons annually. Bitchburn Colliery, at the same time belonged to the Bishop of Durham, and was fifteen fathoms deep. It employed six men, and the output was 2,600 chaldrons, or about 3,315 tons per annum.”
Smelt house in Howden-le-Wear.
This is all very interesting since we generally think of our Coal mining to have started in the
In 1425 on the death of Ralph Neville, first Earl of Westmoreland, the inquisition post mortem mentions a mine of coal in “Wodyfal” otherwise known as Woodifield. An old deed plan dated 1600 in the Woodifield and Cold Knott areas was reportedly marked Cole Pitts and some old maps from this time period of County Durham show Cole Pitts in the locality of Crook. 16

1840s with the introduction of the railways. Certainly the Railways helped to increase the output of coal from our area. Coal was initially mined via outcrops of coal. Coal that was visible on the surface. This is perhaps the most likely method of mining coal around Crook. Bell pits were another method. Where they would dig straight downward into the ground. The would then take as much coal around the hole forming a bell shape underground. Once it was considered unsafe the bell pit would be abandoned and allowed to collapse in on itself. The is possible signs of Bell Pits around the area of Coal Bank Wood, near Fir Tree. The mines and collieries act 1842, prohibited all boys and girls under 10 years old from working underground in coal mines. It was at this time that Shetland Ponies were first introduced to take the place of the putter lads in the mines. In the early 19th century boys went to work at 2 o’clock on a Monday morning and did not get home until between 8 and 10 o’clock at night, entirely exhausted. He would sleep for just a few hours returning the next morning at the same hour, half asleep and sometimes half naked. This continued through the week. He would not see much day light from Sunday until the next Sunday arrived. Health and Safety was non-existent. Most miners suffered from Asthma by the time they reached the age of 30 years old.
shades. Their stockings were blue, purple, pink or mixed colours. Many wore their hair long which was either tied in a queue or rolled up in curls, but when dressed in their best it was spread over their shoulders. Some of the more eccentric men wore two ribbons around their hats in which they would insert one or more bunches of primrose flowers.

Miners of this time were described as dressed in velveteen with large and shining metal buttons. Helping the homeless... On Tuesday 30th April 2019 I will be raising money for CEO Sleepout by spending the night sleeping outside at Durham Cathedral. CEO Sleepout was created to help fight homelessness and poverty throughout the UK. Their fight is funded with money raised by business people who sleep outdoors for one night to raise sponsorship from their business contacts and friends. They hold lots of organised events throughout the country as well as here in the North East and are always looking to recruit business leaders, community leaders, owners, managers, execs and anyone who thinks they can raise a significant amount of funds, and who are willing to give up just one night of comfort.
This will be the 2nd year running that I have slept outside for CEO Sleepout. I really had my eyes opened last year when I took part, I was shocked at how cold it can get when out in the elements. It actually ended up being the last hard frost of the year. I need to raise £1000 and I’m currently way off that total, so can you please spare a couple of quid to help. My bed from last
years event.

Celebrant funerals explained Most people think that a non-religious service is conducted by a humanist however most of our non-religious funerals are conducted by a celebrant. An independent celebrant has no affiliation to any church or humanist society, which means that they are therefore able to offer bereaved families the most appropriate and meaningful funeral ceremony, reflecting the wishes and values of the deceased and the people who are closest to them. The ceremony will celebrate and recollect the life of the person who has passed away and will be respectful and highly personal. The ceremony can be religious, non-religious or have some religious or spiritual content included, such as prayers or hymns. Speeches, poems or songs to commemorate the deceased and reflect the beliefs and values of the deceased and the bereaved family are also often included.
