Spotlight on short film maker Dean Midas Maynard. This month we shine the spotlight on Dean Midas Maynard and his new short film “Valentine’s Eve”. Hi Dean, tell us a little bit about your new short film, “Valentine’s Eve”. Valentine’s Eve is an old school slasher movie, based on a character called Eve Valentine. Let’s just say, Eve isn’t the kind of person that you would want to me down a dark alley. Eve is pure evil.
Festival, Portobello Festival and Stoke Your Fires and was short-listed at numerous other festivals around the world. It has also been shown at numerous Horror Con events around the UK. In October 2019 I released the acclaimed short film, The Rag Dolly Returns.
Tell us a little about the filming process I absolutely love it, but it is hard work and long nights, not only shooting, but editing the final product. In total, from me inventing the character (Eve Valentine) until now, the whole process took around six months. I know this isn’t your first short film, what other films have you made? This is my third film; I co-produced and acted in 2014’s ‘The Legend of the Chained Oak’. The film won best horror short awards at The Bram Stoker
Where can people see your films? My films are available on my official website via dollyveve.co.uk Do you have any more in the pipeline? Yes, I start shooting The Rag Dolly in late spring, ready for a summer release. We then move onto the big one, a face-off between Rag Dolly and Eve Valentine at Halloween.
Contact Details If people want to be considered for any of my upcoming films, they can contact me via deanmidasmaynard.com

The Battle of Neville’s Cross Part 2 Story by Aaron Cowen
This month Aaron Cowen continues looking at the story of the Battle of Nevilles Cross. Very little physical evidence remains about the Battle of Neville’s Cross and academics are not entirely sure exactly where the battle took place. The evidence at the time is scant and non is contemporary. Depending on who tells the story depends on which side was vilified the most. Douglas having been attached near Sunderland Bridge awoke a sleeping King David and informed him that a large English Army was in the vicinity. The encamped King David is said to have scoffed at the suggestion stating, “There are none in England, but wretched monks, disreputable priests, swineherds, cobblers and skinners”. Nevertheless, he readied his army anyway. Moving out of Bear Park towards Durham they lined up on the moor, beyond its walls, overlooking the ground where the two armies would finally give battle. Prior of the Monastery of Durham John Fossor in a letter to Thomas Hatfield, Bishop of Durham is probably the most accurate account of what took place that day. According to Fossor the two armies organised themselves on the Moor of Bearpark or Beaurepaire. The landscape there offered little scope for manoeuvre. It is generally accepted that the English arrayed themselves along a ridge which is now known as Crossgate Moor. This ridge was only 600 metres wide. Both sides are likely to have arranged themselves in 3 divisions. The English had a large compliment of archers. Contemporary estimates put the Scots number at around 10,000 and the English at 6,000. For the Scottish force King David appears to have led the 1st Division, John Randolph, Earl of Moray and Sir William Douglas the 2nd Division with the Kings nephew, Robert Stewart, Earl of Atholl and also High Steward of Scotland along with Patrick Dunbar, the Scottish Earl of March leading the 3rd Division. 16
For the English Force the 1st Division was led by the Archbishop of York, 2nd Division led by Percy and Neville and the 3rd (rearguard) contained Thomas Rokeby, the Sheriff of Yorkshire.
After receiving blessings and encouragement from the archbishop, the English may have initiated what shortly afterwards became known as the battle of Durham or the battle of the Red Hills by having their archers harass the Scotish lines. In response, John Graham, the Earl of Menteith, offered to take 100 mounted knights forward to engage them. Despite being denied permission, he is said to have attacked by himself, causing some consternation in the English ranks but having his horse shot from under him and almost failing to make it back to his own lines. The Scots, although with greater numbers were disadvantaged by the terrain. Only the Steward’s division appeared to have room to manoeuvre; the king was in an awkward position and Moray and Douglas’ advance was broken up by ‘high dykes’. The First two Scottish divisions however managed to engage, and on at least two occasions, the English archers and ordinary soldiers were forced to retreat. The encounter was a long one said to have lasted from “nones until vespers” (9 am until sunset). Both sides fought hard using swords, lances,

bows and axes. Apparently, several truces had to be agreed to allow the combatants to recover. The English began to gain an advantage and although the Scottish had a large reserve, they were not called upon. Both the High Steward and the Earl of March withdrew from the field in an unorderly fashion and the English used this to their advantage. The Scottish King was surrounded and had suffered several arrow wounds including one to the face.
David would spend the next eleven years in English captivity only to be released on payment of 100,000 marks as a ransom from the Scottish nobility. The rest of the retreating Scots were pursued Northwards to the hill of Fyndoune or Findon Hill near present day Sacriston.
Aldin Grange Bridge
Many high-ranking Scots were killed in the battle. Those who survived were taken captive. Those who were just mere commoners were likely killed. What happened to the bodies of those killed is not yet know. Perhaps one day a mass grave may be uncovered.
