Spotlight on Tesco’s Community Champion This month as Tesco Bishop Auckland celebrates it’s 10th birthday we speak to their Community Champion and former Councillor John Bailey. Hi John, as part of your role at Tesco you do lots of work in the Community, tell us a little bit about what your role involves. Well my role as Community Champion is quite varied, in the community we support organisations, charities and schools, all in different ways. I often go along to schools and nurseries to provide products for their breakfast clubs as it is vital for children to have something to eat in the morning. We also hold coffee mornings at various community centres and help with any events which they carry out, they can apply to us for raffle prizes or gift vouchers. Sometimes we also invite small groups for a tour of the store where we let the children know how and what we do with waste and where products come from. We also have invite various groups such as football teams, sporting clubs and various organisations like cubs and scouts to come into the store for bag packing. If you would like to apply to do this you would need to write in to myself and I sort out a date (obviously not at present due to covid). How has Covid 19 affected what you do? Covid has affected all activity at the front of store, as we have charity partnerships with BHF, Diabetes UK and Cancer Research we have tried our best to get round it. The Race for Life is sponsored by Tesco and since its start up until 2019 £40 million has been raised so we have done virtual events online this year. I’ve been going out into our community taking out various products and donations, the NHS has been one of the areas we concentrated on, as well as care homes and small hospitals. In the first month we delivered over £2000 worth of donations, we have donated and delivered food parcels, cookies, apple pies, sun cream, craft materials and made lots of food bank and family donations. 12
What are you working on at the moment? We have just carried out a food collection in store and have collected 12 large box trays, these will be distributed next week to local food banks, schools, families, community groups and others who will benefit from this collection. A huge thanks goes out to our generous customers and staff. Last week Escomb School had an event for Mental Health Day where all of the children dressed in yellow and we provided 200 plus doughnuts. During the school holidays Hunwick Primary School are looking to help 17 families out in the community so we took 3 large boxes of donations to help with this. I will also be visiting a couple of nurseries with donations of craft materials and sun cream for the little ones and in amongst that I will be doing a couple of breakfast clubs for them. Things change week to week and if people would like to join our site, it is “John Bailey in Bishop Auckland Helping our Community” and you will see what we do in the community. Bags of Help has also recently returned where any group or organisation can apply and could receive £1000 funding for their organisation. Over the years what has been your proudest achievement while in the role? I think my best achievement or achievements is that

certain feeling when you can and do help people. There are so many different things you can do in this job. Raising £50 for something small to raising bigger amounts for other things. £50 to some groups can be a lifeline, you always get a great buzz when something comes together and that’s what it’s all about. We had a bag pack when little Mason Campion passed away, wow the community came together in droves and since then Mason’s family have gone on to help others. We had a day for Bradley Lowery where we released balloons and were overwhelmed by the support, sad days but good days as we had done something positive, our customers cannot be faulted they are such a fantastic generous bunch. During Christmas 2018
Watson Harrop set a food bank nomination away and wow a total of 29 tonne of food was donated to us, lots of work to distribute it but we did it and created around 36000 meals in our community, that was a proud moment. On another occasion on Christmas Eve in 2017 an 8 year old boy called Logan came into store with his savings of £100 and bought food for our pet food collection so we organised a day at an animal sanctuary for him. That was such a proud moment when a young child gives up his pocket money for others. A similar thing happened during Christmas 2016 when 3 brothers from Bishop Auckland aged 8, 7 and 5 gave their pocket money up to buy food for people over Christmas which we took to Shildon Alive.
We are looking for groups or charities in the area that have been adversely affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic and would like to feature in the Spotlight for some free publicity. Email us at studio@rcphoto.co.uk
