Spotlight on Crook Town ABA. This month we shine the spotlight on Crook Town ABA, Christopher Pollitt answers our questions. Hi Christopher, tell us a little bit about the Crook Town ABA. Crook Town ABA is a amateur boxing association that trains for Olympic style boxing. We have varied ages and boxing skills at the gym, some at championship level and others on the GB squad training with the best of the boxers in the country. We also have a number of up and coming boxers ready to get in to the mix of things while we still have people coming down for fitness, helping to shape the body and mind while trying to be the best they can be. I have been involved with Crook Town ABA for over 9 years now. The gym is at the Old Boy’s Club just next to the skate park and everyone is welcome to come down and try it out. I became involved with Crook Town ABA when we where still called West Durham. I started taking my kids there as I was friends with the head coach Brian Wright who himself was a professional boxer and the older brother of Nigel Wright former professional and English champion.
12
What sort of age range is the club and what sort of competitions do you take part in? In the gym we start from as young as 7 years old up to any age as long as you can manage the training. We take part in club shows as often as possible, boxing other kids from all-over, some as far as Brighton, Glasgow and Ipswich and then as close as our home show at the Belle Vue Working Men’s Club in Crook once a year. What’s been some of your highlights over the years that you have been involved? Some of the greatest achievements and highlights in the last few years of Crook Town Boxing would have to be when Arron Bramfit beat the Scottish Champion in his forth fight and also getting into the semifinals in the national championships. We also have three more North East champions Stevielee Vickers, Brendan Pearson and Lewis Owens. Stevielee and Brendan are both national runners up, there are so many more highs. All of the coaches are fully trained in boxing and child welfare plus we all are police checked.

The Legend of the Horse with no tongue. Story by Aaron Cowen
When I was young I can remember going to Durham with my Uncle and being told about the Horse with no tongue. In the middle of Durham Market Place stands the well known statue of a horse with a rider on it’s back. The statue is that of Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart, 3rd Marquis of Londonderry born on 18th May 1778 in Dublin, Ireland. Charles fought as a soldier in the French Revolutionary Wars, the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and in the Napoleonic Wars. He was also a politician and a nobleman, but was held in very low esteem by Queen Victoria.
His widow had the Londonderry Equestrian Statue installed on Durham Market which was unveiled in 1861 in a ceremony attended by Benjamin Disraeli. The Statue was created by an English based Italian Sculptor by the name of Raffaele Monti.
He first married Lady Catherine Bligh, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Darnley to whom he had a son called Frederick who would later become the 4th Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart Marquis of Londonderry. Catherine died in 1812 and Charles married Lady Frances Anne Vane-Tempest daughter and heiress of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest who was an MP for the City of Durham and had inherited the Tempest Estates of County Durham, notably Wynyard and Brancepeth. Charles went on to acquire Seaham Hall with the intention of opening up the Coalfields there. He also opened up Seaham Harbour to rival that of Sunderland. He commissioned Benjamin Wyatt to build a mansion at Wynyard Park. During its construction it was destroyed by fire and the architect who designed St. Catherine’s Church in Crook, Ignatius Bonomi was commissioned to complete it. In 1823 he became Earl Vane and Viscount of Seaham. In 1842 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Durham and the following year Colonel of the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards. In 1853, Queen Victoria finally made him a Knight of the Garter and he died a year later in 1854 at Londonderry House.
Today the base provides a carved inscription but note on the photograph taken in the late 1860s, there is none. When I was young the statue was a green colour from the copper material it is made from. In recent years they controversially moved and cleaned the statue to its current position to allow more space on the market place for events. Many complained they would only see the rear end of the horse rather than its head.
Monti utilised a new method for creating the statue. Using a plaster base that was covered by electroplating copper. Legend has it however that Monti was so convinced that his work was perfect in every way said he would jump off one of the Durham bridges and commit suicide if anyone could find fault. Many came from far and wide to look for fault. But no one could find anything amiss. Until! A blind man came along. He was hoisted up to the statue to feel around the horse with his hands. Placing his hands in the horse’s mouth, he had found a fault. The horse had no tongue. Supposedly the sculptor, true to his word, took his own life. However Monti died in 1881 and not from suicide and the horse would appear from the Raffaele Monti ground to have a tongue. In the 1950s however the Marquis did lose his head requiring restoration works. Next they will tell us the Pink Panther doesn’t live in Durham, Durham, Durham, Durham, Durham!
