Spotlight on Tow Law Town AFC during lockdown. This month we shine the spotlight on Tow Law Town AFC, who like most non league football clubs have endured a tough time since last season was ended early due to Covid 19. Club Secretary Steve Moralee answers our questions. Hi Steve, Tow Law had a little bit of a cruel ending to last season with the club chasing promotion and about to play in the semi final of the league cup. Yes, although we weren’t in an automatic promotion spot we were putting an excellent run together. We still had teams above us to play & were confident we could break into the top 4 before the end of the season. The cup semi final represented us with a great opportunity to land some silverware. People don’t realise how expensive it is to run a non league football club, how were you affected by not being able to play and having to close the club house? The last few months have been difficult for everyone. We lost our matchday gate & all clubhouse income, although we did qualify for some Covid 19 grants which have proved useful. On a positive note we have a good band of volunteers who have used the time to redecorate the clubhouse. I think everyone will be impressed with their efforts.

has happened to us, the ground stands on old mining ground. We had one in the goalmouth in 2004, and in 2016, the road to the clubhouse suffered substantial subsidence. We’ve worked with the Coal Board & AEC Contracting to ensure the pitch, terracing & turbine is restored in time for the restart. It’s been a very worrying time. What are your aims for the forthcoming season? We’ve kept a good nucleus of last seasons squad. Michael & Warren have added some quality

The sinkhole on the sidelines of the pitch before and after repairs.

Your bad luck continued with a collapse in the pitch during lock down too, is the pitch going to be ready for the start of the new season? On top of everything else we had the disaster of a sinkhole in the pitch. This isn’t the first time this 12

players during the break. Our ambition has to be getting back to Division One. A good run in the FA Vase would be appreciated but we’ve a difficult 1st game away to North Shields. How can people offer their support to the club? More support would help really kick us on. More spectators through the gate & in the clubhouse would be good to see. We know times have been hard though. Getting the local business community behind us & working alongside us would really help too. We had a bonus in the lockdown when a Youtuber called WorkTheSpace publicised our cause. We’ve also sold replica shirts all over the globe. That’s the advertising power of social media & the internet.

The latest home shirt.

We are looking for groups or charities in the area that have been adversly affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic and would like to feature in the Spotlight for some free publicity. Email us at studio@rcphoto.co.uk

How has Covid 19 affected local business? Each month we will speak to a couple of business owners to see how they have been affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. “The pandemic arrived, I don’t think anyone was prepared for the impact of lockdown on local businesses, for us schools closed, our coach holidays were cancelled, day trips were cancelled, private hires ceased and people were advised not travel on public transport. 2020 weddings with the vintage buses were postponed, basically every thing we do was severely affected. An empty diary. Thankfully though we and all our staff have stayed safe and healthy so hopefully 2021 will bring brighter busier days for us all.” Paula Gibson, Weardale Motor Services, Stanhope

“Lock down hit my business really hard, I had a busy year of weddings which probably forms 90% of my income and suddenly they all began getting postponed and cancelled. I fully expect more 2020 weddings to be postponed too due to all of the restrictions currently in place. I do see light at the end of the tunnel though, hopefully all 2021 weddings will take place as normal.” Ritchie Coatsworth, Ritchie Coatsworth Photography, Crook
