Spotlight on What’s Thy Craic This month we shine the spotlight on upstart t-shirt company “What’s Thy Craic” we talk to one of the guys behind the idea, Andy Ditchfield. Hi Andy, what got you started with the idea to make and sell t-shirts feature local sayings from the area? The short answer to that is being asked if I’d seen my backside one morning! Having woken up in a particularly grumpy mood, banging and clattering about in the kitchen like you do, I was somewhat baffled by this enquiry from my other half. Responding with an enquiry of my own, I was amused to learn that in Stanhope this apparently means, “you’re a little cross today, what appears to be the issue?”. It turns out that there are many such sayings dotted about the place and they would absolutely be the sort of thing I would wear as a T-Shirt. It also transpires that my old pal Gaz Miller (renowned Bishop Artist – jgmillerart.co. uk) thought the same thing and thus “Whats Thy Craic” was born. My personal favourite which made me laugh and reminded me of my childhood was the “Get down your own end” shirt…. Where did the inspiration for these shirts come from? Gaz is Bishop bred (Coundon born) and just about everything that comes out of his mouth would qualify as shirt content in all fairness. He 14

initially sent me a list of about 30 quotes and we shortlisted around half to get us going. That said, “Get Down yer Own End” was a submission on our website. We have a section to submit your finest Craic to win a free shirt and this was our first winner, a belter indeed. Andy, you’ve done it all, made music, taken photos, flown drones, built websites, what made you get into the t-shirt business. Haha, I still do most of the above, honest! The original plan was to have a business that simply ticked along in the background. Being a designer and building websites for a living meant that I could put this all together myself, get it launched and sit back and relax. Unfortunately for me, that was only the beginning of the workload. It now consumes just about all of my spare time what with marketing, dealing with suppliers and coming up with new designs and what not. Where do you see the company going over the next year? It’s difficult to say at the moment. Both Gaz and I have our own businesses to run and we’re independently really rather busy on a day to day basis. That said, we’re actively working on trying to promote What Thy Craic and it’d be nice to think that in a years time we’re bumping into one or two folk sporting a shirt. We have new ideas and concepts in the pipeline, but for now local familiarity is our goal. Tell our readers why they NEED one of your shirts…. Our current best seller, by a long shot actually, is

a homage to “The Mews”. Those who went, myself included, remember it fondly. No one “NEEDS” a T-Shirt, but in this case, it doesn’t half bring back a touch of nostalgia to those of a certain age group. Of course, if you love tee’s and absolutely HAVE to buy one, ours are 165g 100% Combed Cotton, a great fit and lovely quality. We put a lot of effort into sourcing a really nice shirt and the general consensus is we managed it. Where can people buy your shirts? Our full range of t-shirts and hoodies are available in a variety of sizes and colours exclusively at WhatsThyCraic.com - use the discount code outabout10 for 10% off!

New government guidelines for people attending a funeral service From 19th July 2021, limits to the number of people who are able to attend a funeral will be lifted. Venues, such as churches, crematoriums and cemeteries, may still apply an upper limit to the number of people who can attend the service. Durham Crematorium are now able to accommodate 100 people & Wear Valley Crematorium are able to accommodate 75 people in their respective chapels.
