Spotlight on Crook Rotary Club. This month we shine the spotlight on Crook Rotary Club who do lots of great work in the local community. John Taylor answers our questions. Hi John, could you start by telling us a little bit about the Crook Rotary Club?

Nationally what are the aims of the Rotary Club organisation as a whole?

Crook Rotary Club was formed in 1953, 68 years ago and serves Crook and the surrounding villages. The club is part of the worldwide Rotary International movement which has a presence in every country in the world.

Rotarians are ordinary men and women who give a little of their time and energy to help others. Members take great pride in working within the community, with other community groups and leaders and also on international projects.

The organisation is open to all genders and to people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Rotary is generally classed as a service organisation which enables and facilitates activities for organisations, charitable bodies, educational and sporting activities that assist individuals and communities. As a charitable body Rotary is the foremost volunteering organisation in the world. All Rotarians give time, experience and practical advice on a purely voluntary basis.

Rotary provides a vehicle to do something worthwhile locally and further afield. We benefit from being part of a large international trusted organisation. This provides the backup and support ensuring all club activities are well organised, productive and legally operated. Could you tell us a little bit about the local causes that the Rotary Club have helped support? The club has already provided three defibrillators which are located around Crook town and also contributed to a defibrillator for Fir Tree.

The club meets on a regular basis at The Duke of York Inn, Fir Tree where meetings are A further three defibrillators are to be installed in preceded by a meal followed by a guest speaker Crook and the surrounding area. During Covid lockdowns cash contributions were made in lieu of food.

Money for PPE was donated to The Leonard Cheshire Home to protect staff during covid. The annual Carol Concert is held at Dawson Street St. Andrews Church with local school choirs and Stanhope Silver Band providing the entertainment. Support has also been given to Crook Brownies, the British Legion Poppy Appeal, Tabitha’s Toys and a Christmas Toy Box appeal for every refugee child in the area. Internationally two wheelchairs were purchased for Natal. The “Send a Cow” scheme in Uganda was supported by purchasing a cow to support farming and provide food and work for poor farmers. The Women in Need charity in Nagpur, India is run by Leah Patterson of Frosterley. The club purchased a breast screening cartridge at a cost of £2,000 to facilitate breast screening in rural areas. We also sponsor young people on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award organised by Rotary North East. This consists of a week long outward bound course. Why join the Crook Rotary Club? Joining Rotary can be an extremely rewarding experience. Members provide their skills and experience to assist local and international communities to overcome difficulties and improve life chances. Like many organisations Rotary has been affected by the pandemic and as a consequence are undertaking an active drive to recruit new members. Club President, Chris Hardy, was proud to present, on behalf of the club, a certificate of thanks to North House Surgery in Crook in recognition of the dedication and hard work of the doctors, nurses and all support staff at the surgery throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Honestly cannot recommend enough already and we haven’t even seen our photos yet! We went this morning with our one year old who decided to skip his nap and was very grumpy and not very cooperative.... Ritchie was GREAT with him and even offered to finish our photos another day when little one was in a better mood, absolutely brilliant experience so far!!” Sophie Gwillym, visited the studio in April 2021
