Spotlight on the CCL Charity Bike Ride This month we speak to Paul Storey who was one of 20 cyclists from Crook Community Leisure raising money for the Team Solan Cancer Trust in memory of Dennis Dolphin. Hi Paul, share with us a little bit of how this bike ride came about? It wasn’t long after Dennis passed away a few of us were at a spinning class at CCL and a thought occurred that it would be good for so many reasons to do something in memory of Dennis, with him being the guy that actually built the facility we all use daily. So rather than the traditional Coast to Coast (C2C) we came up with the Coast to Crook Community Leisure (C2CCL). Two days on the bike starting at Whitehaven finishing at CCL following the C2C National Cycle Route for most of the ride. Dennis’ son Nikki and his Mum Julie gave their approval in addition to Nikki being fully committed to riding. Word went out and very quickly, we were oversubscribed. Next question was to set a very nominal sponsorship value and determine the charity. Fortunately, Dennis had already taken care of this. Tell us a little bit about the Team Solan Cancer Trust. Dennis supported lots of great things when he

was alive and was very active in the local community, none more so than his commitment to the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, a fantastic local charity founded from yet more heartache caused by Cancer but there to provide support to ensure no one has to face Cancer alone. Dennis’ wishes were to continue to support his chosen charity after his death. The Dolphin family organised a Bongo Bingo event earlier in the year and raised well over an amazing £5k and now the C2CCL, so Dennis’ wishes are really happening. Tell us a little about the bike ride itself. It all started Saturday 14th May at a ridiculously early 4.30am on Crook Market Place, some nervous excitement alongside some grumpy faces not used to such an early start. A big thanks to Weardale Motor Services for providing transport across to Whitehaven with a fully loaded bike trailer on the back. Backing us up was Lindsey Johnson in her superb truck with a spare bike, tool kit and supplies. She was an absolute godsend ably supported by Kate Adamson. A very welcome sight at the many stops on the way, especially the top of a very windswept Hartside and even more windswept Nenthead…!

through the dale pretty much to Harperley Banks we all pushed on…..unfortunately that head wind put pay to that promise…! Day one saw us leave Whitehaven and a steady ride to Penrith through some unbelievable scenery, a few little naughty climbs and fortunately some great weather. A few detours for those in the group that found following C2C signs a little challenging. All relatively, incident free apart from 3 falls (nothing too serious) and one snapped chain which we managed to repair in Threlkeld on the lunch stop. At every stop we were fed and watered including lots of high energy bananas kindly provided by Gary Cunningham, another one of the many riders. Mid-afternoon we were all comfortably checked into our accommodation, showered and of course out in the sunshine boosting the local public houses economy..! Therefore, with an air of confidence and a few hangovers we left Penrith early on the Sunday. Hartside Pass drained that confidence quickly and even the most polite used a few expletives arriving at the top. The strong headwind ensured the words drifted off over the Pennines..! Little did we know the climb out of Nenthead had significantly more challenges awaiting, but one by one, we got up it. Not many in the group had done the ride in the past but with a guaranteed promise that after Nenthead it was a wonderful downhill ride
Early afternoon everyone consolidated back on Dennis and Julie’s driveway on West Road, many pics all of us proudly wearing our shirts and then as a single group down into Crook and onto the party at CCL. Heading up the group was John Ord in the only pink t-shirt riding Dennis’ mountain bike flanked by Nikki, Robbie, and Luke (Son, Grandson and Son in Law). We arrived to an overwhelming round of applause from everyone that had gathered at CCL, with as you can imagine some real emotions and hardly a dry eye anywhere. We remain convinced Dennis was blowing that headwind at us whilst having a proper laugh at our expense, but we’re all equally sure he looked after us all, and we’re convinced he’ll be so proud of the group and more so individual commitments and monumental effort as well as the outstanding amount that’s been raised so far. How much have you raised so far and how can people donate? The target was set at £1500, to date we are well over £4000… unbelievable and testament to the man himself. The just giving page remains open for anyone kind enough and willing to drop a couple of pounds on there, thank you. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dennis-dolphin
