Appeal for old photographs

This month we are once again asking our readers if they can help us in our hunt for old photographs so that we can keep the “years gone by” feature going over the coming months.

We are looking for photographs from the area of buildings, landmarks, people and special events. Please email any old photos to: studio@rcphoto.co.uk or drop into Ritchie Coatsworth Photography, 12 Hope Street, Crook

We are also looking for local charities or community groups that would benefit from featuring in our spotlight feature. The spotlight feature is a question & answer section that helps promote your group. If you are interested please email studio@rcphoto.co.uk.

This month we shine the spotlight on Mike Amos’ new book, “Prairie Stories” which tells the story of village life in Stanley Crook. Former Stanley resident Shaun Hope who has helped pull some stories together, answers our questions. Hi Shaun, Mike’s new book, “Prairie Stories” launches on Saturday 14th May from 11am till 2pm at Stanley Crook Community Centre. Tell us a little about what is happening on the day. It’s for anyone who would like a copy of the book or even just to come along and support the launch at the Community Centre as Mike has done a wonderful job of pulling all of this together. Without spoiling anything tell us a little bit about what sort of stories feature in the book? Mike has done a fantastic job going round people’s houses to gather as many stories and photos as he can. Some are happy stories, some are funny, while some are tragic. I know Mike was a big fan of the old Stanley United Club house hence the title of the book. I’m guessing there’s a few stories of Stanley United in there? There’s quite few stories of the old football ground. Mike was writer for the Northern Echo for years and also Chairman of the Northern League so had good knowledge of Stanley United and it’s unique little ground which he always called, “The Little House on the Prairie”. Obviously Mike Amos has written the book but how did you and Karl Utley become involved with it? Me and Karl pointed out quite few people for Mike to go and interview. He was at my Mam’s house for 2 hours getting all the old stories from her and my Auntie, Christine Winter. He spent a good few hours talking to people in Billy Row Club and he went to Karl’s house a couple of times too. Having grown up in Stanley I’m looking forward to seeing this book, where can get copy? The book will be on sale on the day at the Community Centre, but you would like a copy please get in touch with me or Karl. I’ll even make sure there’s books to buy at my Mam’s house in Stanley if anyone wants to call in there for one. Spotlight on Prairie Stories by Mike Amos Shaun Hope, Mike Amos & Karl Utley. Don’t forget to quote Out & About responding to adverts. Spotlight on Crook Rotary Club. Hi John, could you start by telling us a ittle bit about the Crook Rotary Club? Crook Rotary Club was formed in 1953, 68 years ago and serves Crook and the surrounding villages. The club is part of the worldwide Rotary International movement which has a presence in every country in the world. The organisation is open to all genders and to people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Rotary is generally classed as a service organisation which enables and facilitates activities for organisations, charitable bodies, educational and sporting activities that assist individuals and communities. As a charitable body Rotary is the foremost volunteering organisation in the world. All Rotarians give time, experience and practical advice on a purely voluntary basis. The club meets on a regular basis at The Duke of York Inn, Fir Tree where meetings are preceded by meal followed by a guest speaker representing a charitable body possibly appealing for funds or a topical interesting subject. Numerous activities are arranged to raise funds. The club activities have been greatly reduced during the Covid pandemic but are gradually returning to some form of normality. Nationally what are the aims of the Rotary Club organisation as a whole? Rotarians are ordinary men and women who give a little of their time and energy to help others. Members take great pride in working within the community, with other community groups and leaders and also on international projects. Rotary provides a vehicle to do something worthwhile locally and further afield. We benefit from being part of a large international trusted organisation. This provides the backup and support ensuring all club activities are well organised, productive and legally operated. Could you tell us a little bit about the local causes that the Rotary Club have helped support? The club has already provided three defibrillators which are located around Crook town and also contributed to a defibrillator for Fir Tree. A further three defibrillators are to be installed in Crook and the surrounding area. Overall cost of the defibrillator programme was in excess of £5,000. The club support the Salvation Army Food Bank with weekly food donations. This month we shine the spotlight on Crook Rotary Club who do lots of great work in the local community.
