Rome around Crook Story by Aaron Cowen

We all know our area to be steeped in Coal Mining History but how did that all start? The Romans were the first to make use of Coal and evidence confirms that coal was being used in our area as far back as the 1100s, so it’s possible the Romans used our coal too. So how did the Romans leave their mark on our area? The Roman Conquest for Britain began in 43AD by Emperor Claudius but it wasn’t until 78-84AD that Emperor Agricola moved against the Celtic Tribe, the Brigantes in the North. Members of this tribe may have lived at the nearby Stockley Beck Camp near Oakenshaw. Looking at the word ‘Chester’, we have many places in the area with this name attached. Lanchester, Ebchester, Binchester and even Chester-le-Street all with Roman links. ‘Chester’ is the Roman word for military camp or fort. A place called Stonechester exists on the road from Stanley Crook to Willington and could suggest that a Stone camp or military outpost may have existed. Certainly at the top of Dowfold Hill a Roman Soldier would be able to see for miles. Perhaps a Roman Lookout Post was sited here. Also at Stonechester is an old cave known locally as Cala Cave. Legends suggest that this was a Roman Tunnel which ran through the hill to Hole-in-The-Wall Farm from Stonechester. However, close inspection of this tunnel would suggest that it forms part of the old Bowden Close Quarry, which gave its stone to build the houses at Bowden Close in the 1850s. The name Cala coming from the nearby California Terrace which stood nearby. It has been suggested that Roman buildings 8

Cala Cave at Stonechester.

existed at Hole-in-the-Wall Farm (Now Church Meadows Farm) and High Woodifield Farm. However no official evidence has ever been provided to confirm this. Two Roman roads and a Roman Bridge exist at Willington. Dere Street otherwise known as Watling Street was one of the main Roman Routes from York to the Firth of Forth, Scotland at the Antonine Wall and also runs the length of Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland. It was built between 77-80AD. Recently road works at Helmington Row Helmington Row cobbles. and Willington uncovered part of this Road and legend has it that the ghostly sounds of Roman soldiers marching on this road can sometimes be heard. But it may be interesting to imagine who may have used this route since it was the main Roman route into Scotland.

King Æthelstan for example is likely to have used this route in around 937AD during events leading up to the Battle of Brunanburh which has recently been suggested to have occurred in Lanchester. In the middle ages the route became known as “alta via regia strata” or “The Royal Highway”. It is very likely therefore that many a King and Queen travelled through Willington along this road. King James I and King Charles I almost certainly used the route when they stayed at Bishop Auckland, one of King Charles I visits was as a prisoner. In 1910 a Roman Milestone was found along one of these two Roman Roads near Cumberland Terrace, Willington made of Millstone Grit depicting the name of the Emperor Gordian III (238-244AD). And to finish off a Roman Coin from the 2nd century showing the Emperor Marcus Aurelius was however found on the former

Pickford and Holland Site close to where Rudkin Drive, Crook now stands.

CrookFest 2016 This month Out & About Magazine talks to Crook Town AFC’s Marshall Rippon about the forthcoming CrookFest 2016 event. When was the first CrookFest held and has it always followed the same format?

How many different acts will be taking part in this years event?

The very first festival was in 2011 it was called The Crook Town Festival of Music, a two day event featuring DJs on the Saturday and rock bands on the Sunday, this was the most nerve racking of all the Crook festivals. Tickets didnt start selling till 5 days before the event and the main bulk sold on the day! Me and the then chairman Kieron did seriously consider cancelling only a week before it was due to happen. I reckon if we had, there wouldn’t have been a CrookFest today, it was renamed CrookFest in 2012 and remained a two day festival with the same format, this also applied 2013 however due to noise complaints the DJ Saturday had to be dropped, so 2014 onwards it has been Rock Jam Sunday only.

There are 22 bands playing CrookFest 2016 but something I aim for is I never have bands playing the same style of music on each stage at the same time, so as an example in this years line up I have as headline on the field main stage The Kill playing covers, the likes of Whitesnake, Guns n Roses and Bon Jovi while on the second stage I have The Finetimes playing Indie music from Oasis, Blur, Happy Mondays and in The Hut Bar I have The Suspect Device who are playing popular punk rock numbers and that is the thread I use throughout the whole day with other variations thrown in such as Ska, Glam Rock and Country music there’s something to please everyone.

Typically how much organising does an event like CrookFest take? The actual organising of the festival is solely down to me, so in a nutshell CrookFest takes up my life for months, can’t really say anymore other than I am very thankfull to my wife Lousie for being very understanding and helping out on the day, plus Andrew Reynolds for helping with promotion then on to the day itself I would like to thank my second in command Helen Johnson, Mr Jeff Patterson which I named the main stage after, Sandra Sanderson, Kevin Cooper and also the guys back stage Paul, Micheal, Chris, Dave and a special mention for the festival’s longstanding sound man Gambit. 14

For anyone that hasn’t been to CrookFest before what are they missing out on? A fun day out and a must for for music lovers, there are two large marquees on the field with hot food stalls along side, the hog roast being my favourite destination plus of course there are the bars selling beer at £3 a pint, they are located inside the Patterson Marquee which also hosts the main stage and the club house known as The Hut Bar is the home of the third stage plus it runs a wee bit later than the field marquees and has The Final Pout Down being the last band on stage at CrookFest 2016. The second stage is located in the Millfield Marquee, all of the stages have none stop live bands that run from at least 12 noon till 11.00 and the £15 ticket covers them all.

Don’t forget to quote Out & About Magazine when responding to adverts.

What has been your favourite act/band to appear at CrookFest over the years? This is a very difficult question to answer as I pick all the bands and I admit I dont pick them on my own music tastes but on there popularity and styles, however the band I owe the most to is Bon Jovi Forever these guys put 100% into promotion and performance and I have them back 2016 for a 4th year in a row this time as The Kill and they WILL be adding a montage of Bon Jovi hits for there fans. How important do you feel CrookFest is to the town and how does it help Crook AFC survive? The festival is a one day, once a year music feast which happens the 1st bank holiday Sunday in May, it has now become an event a lot of folk from Crook and surrounding areas watch and wait with anticipation for the line-up and date to be announced on the website and social media months prior to the event because it has become a must be there gathering of fun and music. Tickets are sold everyear to people as far as Carlisle, Manchester and Hull, this has to be good for the town and area because apart from the town’s July carnival which is mainly for the town’s children there’s nothing else happening in Crook and the proceeds from the festival all go to keep their one time famous Northern League football club Crook Town AFC up and running. The only down side of this is the festival can not afford to grow any larger because it takes all the profits made everyear just to keep the club going for just a third of the football season which means zero budget to put CrookFest on

again the following year, but this doesn’t seem to deter anyone because the festival goes from strength to strength year after year. Where can people buy tickets for this years event? Tickets are available from: Crook Hope Street Newsagents, Crook, DL15 9HU The Mill House Pub, Crook DL15 9AZ Bishop Auckland Kingsway Arcade Salerooms, DL14 7AR Online Skiddle.com/CrookFest Tickets for anyone over 12 years of age are £15 or £20 at the gate on the day and all under 12s are free, conditions apply all details are online at www.CrookFest.co.uk.

Making a difference... Stray Aid is a registered charity, Charity No. 1117372, based in Coxhoe, Durham. Our mission is to rescue, re-unite or rehome the lost, abused, abandoned or unwanted dogs found on the streets in the North East of England. Without your support, we are unable to provide this vital lifeline and we will not succeed in giving these unfortunate dogs a new start in life. Our aim is to provide practical help and information on stray, lost or abandoned dogs and cats across County Durham, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. If you have lost or found a dog, please contact Stray Aid’s Help Desk on 0300 999 4247 between 8am and 9pm, seven days a week, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. We close at 5pm on New Years Eve.

It has become evident that unless Stray Aid owns the land and property it occupies, applying for grant funding is harder and in many cases impossible.

To make a donation and help us to future-proof our charity, please text STRY60 followed by £1, £5 or £10 to 70070 or visit the link below: www.justgiving.com/StrayAid-Charity3
